State leaders are responding to a move by the federal government to withhold about a quarter billion dollars in Medicaid funding. The Trump administration says the state has 60 days to share a plan to address fraud or the freeze could be extended. But Governor Tim Walz and members of his administration say they've been taking such steps. State Medicaid Director John Connolly said the state will have to pay the federal government a quarter billion dollars for services already provided, which is a hit to the state budget. Connolly says the Trump Administration has threatened to withhold more money. The funding pause affects 14 categories of services funded through Medicaid. Late in 2025, the state began reviewing providers of those services. It has suspended or delayed some payments. The programs include, in part, treatments for substance use disorder and mental health conditions. Marcus Schmit, executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, spoke with host Nina Moini about what the funding threat could mean for mental health care in the state.

Addiction doesn't start with a substance. It starts with pain. In this episode of Harder Than Life, Kelly Siegel sits down with addiction expert Amber Hollingsworth to explore the real roots of addiction, enabling, and family systems. This conversation breaks down why enabling feels like love, how trauma fuels addictive behavior, and why recovery requires boundaries, accountability, and radical honesty. If you've ever loved someone struggling with addiction—or struggled yourself—this episode offers clarity and hope. Key Takeaways
Despite major advances in our understanding of the biology of mental health disorders, there's no blood test or brain scan that will confirm if you have depression, anxiety, PTSD, or any other psychiatric illness. And yet, the American Psychiatric Association recently announced that it will be including biomarkers for mental conditions in the next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which guides diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. So how close are we to pinpointing the biological markers of mental illness, and what does that mean for diagnosis? It's complicated. Host Flora Lichtman untangles some of this science with psychiatry researcher John Krystal. Guest: Dr. John Krystal is a professor of psychiatry, neuroscience, and psychology at the Yale School of Medicine. Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. You might remember Alexandra Paul as one of the stars of Baywatch or the Tom Hanks-Dan Aykroyd Dragnet film. You may not have realized that as a child and on to her long trip through the worlds of modeling and Hollywood, she was bingeing and purging and dealing with severe eating disorders. She tells us about her relationship with sugar and what food meant emotionally. Then we're joined by Dr. Cynthia Bulik, one of the top experts on eating disorders in the world today, to talk about remarkable progress in understanding the genetic components of eating disorders. Rather than blame family (especially mothers), peer pressure, or fashion culture, Dr. Bulik says some people are much more prone to developing eating disorders due to the genes they happened to get. If everything you do is labeled a symptom of bipolar disorder, do you ever get to be yourself? In this episode, Gabe Howard (who lives with bipolar) and board certified psychiatrist Dr. Nicole Washington tackle one of the most frustrating — and rarely discussed — realities of living with bipolar disorder: when regular human behavior gets pathologized by friends, family, and even well-meaning supporters.Want to watch TV the whole weekend? Suddenly it's “depression.”Excited about a new idea or passion? You're being “grandiose.”Stumble over your words or get animated in conversation? Sounds like “mania.”Gabe shares deeply personal stories about having his ideas dismissed, his ambitions questioned, and his successes doubted, not by strangers, but by the people who loved him most. Dr. Nicole explains why loved ones become hypervigilant, how fear and trauma shape their reactions, and where concern crosses the line into harm. Listen and Learn: learn how to tell the difference between bipolar symptoms and typical human behavior understand why loved ones become hyper-alert and how fear drives their reactions how to have hard conversations without losing your support system why community and peer support matter when loved ones can't let go of fear This episode isn't about denying bipolar symptoms; it's about reclaiming your identity beyond the diagnosis. Because people with bipolar disorder deserve full lives, real dreams, and the freedom to be annoying, excited, ambitious, and human — just like everyone else. Cold Open Transcript: Gabe Howard: I don't think we're allowed to have these thoughts. Let's say that I was a person that did not live with bipolar disorder. And I came up with the pie-in-the-sky idea. The conversation is negative, but it also sort of moves forward. People with bipolar disorder don't get that. We just get shut down immediately, told that this is a symptom of our illness and that we need to cease this line of communication. And so they withdraw all that help, they withdraw all that information, and they leave us to fend for ourselves. Which actually puts us in a worse position. Our host, Gabe Howard, is an award-winning podcast host, author, and sought-after suicide prevention and mental health speaker, but he wouldn't be any of those things today if he hadn't been committed to a psychiatric hospital in 2003.Gabe also hosts Healthline's Inside Mental Health podcast has appeared in numerous publications, including Bipolar magazine, WebMD, Newsweek, and the Stanford Online Medical Journal. He has appeared on all four major TV networks, ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX. Among his many awards, he is the recipient of Mental Health America's Norman Guitry Award, received two Webby Honoree acknowledgements, and received an official resolution from the Governor of Ohio naming him an “Everyday Hero.” Gabe wrote the popular book, "Mental Illness is an Asshole and other Observations," available from Amazon; signed copies are available directly from the author with free swag included! In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with author KJ Aiello about their book, The Monster and the Mirror: Mental Illness, Magic, and the Stories We Tell (ECW Press, 2024). Revelatory memoir and cultural criticism that connects popular fantasy and our perceptions of mental illness to offer an empathetic path to compassionate care Growing up, K.J. Aiello was fascinated by magical stories of dragons, wizards, and fantasy, where monsters were not what they seemed and anything was possible. These books and films were both a balm and an escape, a safe space where Aiello's struggle with mental illness transformed from a burden into a strength that could win battles and vanquish villains. A unique blend of memoir, research, and cultural criticism, The Monster and the Mirror charts Aiello's life as they try to understand their own mental illness using The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, and other stories as both guides to heroism and agency and cautionary tales of how mental illness is easily stereotyped as bad and violent. Aiello questions who is allowed to be “mad” versus “sane,” “good” versus “evil,” and “weak” versus “strong,” and who is allowed to tell their own stories. The Monster and the Mirror explores our perceptions of mental illness in a way that is challenging and tender, empathetic and knowledgeable, and offers a path to deeper understanding and compassionate care. K.J. Aiello is a mentally ill, award-winning writer based in Toronto, ON. Their work has appeared in the Globe and Mail, Toronto Life, Chatelaine, The Walrus, and This Magazine. The Power Of Communion ( Luke Chapter 22)
Right, picture this. It's 2:30am. I've been bounced off half of Sydney's motorways on the way back from Albury-Wodonga, the NSW/VIC border, and I'm talking myself through a full-blown panic attack because, well, everyone else is asleep. ZzzzToday started as a quick meet and greet and hit top gear — strapping freight, riding in an Kenworth and remembering why I love the transport industry so much. I'm trying to build something that brings trucking and mental health together… and for most of the day, I felt real purpose and inspired. Then, I hit Sydney. First, the M7 shuts. No biggie, I keep on truckin'.Then, NorthConnex shuts. Just my luck. Roadworks everywhere. Detours through the back roads of the big smoke. Sleep? Not likely tonight. Now I'm picturing myself fronting up to an 8:30am meeting at the University, then a filmed interview I've been looking forward to all week, and an advisory group meeting (yep, big day) running on fumes — and the inner critic is LOUD. The anxiety is like THUNDER. Here comes the wave of dread. I just need to get back to Newcastle. Perfection or nothing.Don't stumble. You can't afford it. The stakes are too high So I go back to basics: name what I can see, breathe longer out than in, loosen the grip, label the task instead of the monster. The goal isn't to get rid of fear at 3am — it's to keep pointing northwards while it's yelling at you.By the time I get home, the panic's still there… but it's smaller. And it's not driving anymore. Thank God, neither am I. Now to sleep, I've got a big day coming up! -- Follow The Dysregulated Podcast: Instagram – @elliot.t.waters Facebook – The Dysregulated Podcast YouTube – The Dysregulated Podcast (Official Channel) Created by Elliot Waters — Inspired by lived experience. Narcissism has become one of the most misused words in mental health — and social media hasn't helped. In this episode, host Gabe Howard is joined by licensed marriage and family therapist Kati Morton to separate clinical reality from internet myth. Together, they break down what narcissistic personality disorder actually is, why confidence and disagreement don't equal narcissism, and how terms like “gaslighting” and “love bombing” get distorted online. We answer common questions like: Can people with narcissistic personality disorder learn empathy? How can loved ones' support change without sacrificing their safety or boundaries? If narcissism is a mental illness, why do we have trouble feeling compassion for people who have it? Finally, Gabe and Kati discuss whether people with narcissistic personality disorder can change, what meaningful treatment actually looks like, and how loved ones can protect themselves while setting healthy boundaries. “If social media were accurate, narcissism would describe anyone who annoys us. But clinically? It's something very different.” ~Kati Morton, author of “Why Do I Keep Doing This? Unlearn the Habits That Keep You Stuck and Unhappy” Our guest, Kati Morton, is widely recognized as a leading mental health advocate and educator. She holds a masters in clinical psychology and is a licensed marriage and family therapist. She has a passion for education and empowerment and shares helpful insights through her YouTube channel. Kati is the author of three books “Are You Ok?,” “Traumatized,” and “Why Do I Keep Doing This? Unlearn the Habits Keeping You Stuck and Unhappy.” She hopes that by speaking candidly about mental health and encouraging viewers to reach out to get the support they need, we can remove the stigma associated with getting help. Our host, Gabe Howard, is an award-winning writer and speaker who lives with bipolar disorder. He is the author of the popular book, "Mental Illness is an Asshole and other Observations," available from Amazon; signed copies are also available directly from the author. Gabe is also the host of the "Inside Bipolar" podcast with Dr. Nicole Washington. Gabe makes his home in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio. Is there evidence that the ketogenic diet can cure schizophrenia?Recent comments from HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sparked headlines…and controversy. While “cure” isn't the right word, the conversation has brought much-needed attention to an emerging field: metabolic psychiatry. In this video, Dr. Bret Scher breaks down what the science actually shows about ketogenic metabolic therapy as a potential adjunctive treatment for serious mental illness, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder. You'll learn about:What nutritional ketosis is and why brain energy matters for serious mental illnessHow psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder involve underlying metabolic dysfunctionEarly evidence on ketogenic therapy for serious mental illness from Stanford, Edinburgh, and The Ohio State UniversityHow consistent lived experiences aligned with emerging clinical data warrant serious scientific explorationWhat new research is on the wayKetogenic therapy is emerging as a serious metabolic strategy that may expand how we think about treating complex psychiatric conditions. In this episode of “Inside Schizophrenia,” Rachel Star Withers (who lives with schizophrenia) and cohost Gabe Howard explore practical, safe ways to express your schizophrenia journey — without needing to be an artist, writer, or performer. From journaling (even if you hate it) to movement, storytelling, and simple word exercises, they break down how expression can support emotional regulation, restore personal agency, and help organize traumatic experiences. Listeners will learn: why you don't need artistic talent to benefit from expressive outlets how storytelling helps organize traumatic memories into something manageable what caregivers and loved ones should know about encouraging safe expression Later, Rachel is joined by singer, songwriter, and poet Susan Wojnar, who shares her powerful lived experience with late-onset schizophrenia and how creativity both challenged and supported her recovery. Susan discusses hearing voices within music, reclaiming her guitar from psychosis, and why sharing her story through poetry helped her — and others — feel less alone. Susan's new book, "White Darkness: Poetic Tales of the Schizophrenic Experience," is available now. This episode isn't about creating masterpieces. It's about finding your way to release what you've been carrying and take control of your narrative. With 25 years of lived experience with schizophrenia, Susan Wojnar's book debut transcends the traditional boundaries of memoir, diagnosis, and verse to offer readers a profoundly human window into the experience of psychosis. With raw honesty, stark imagery, and a lyrical voice that sings even in silence, “White Darkness” dares readers — caregivers, mental health professionals, those who struggle with mental health issues, and everyday people alike — to step inside a fragmented yet beautifully defiant world. Our host, Rachel Star Withers, (Link: www.rachelstarlive.com) is an entertainer, international speaker, video producer, and schizophrenic. She has appeared on MTV's Ridiculousness, TruTV, NBC's America's Got Talent, Marvel's Black Panther, TUBI's #shockfight, Goliath: Playing with Reality, and is the host of the HealthLine podcast “Inside Schizophrenia”. She grew up seeing monsters, hearing people in the walls, and having intense urges to hurt herself. Rachel creates videos documenting her schizophrenia, ways to manage, and letting others like her know they are not alone and can still live an amazing life. This week on Get Canceled, Sheryl and her guests draw attention to the barely handicapable youth of America. The studies are out, and we're seeing an epidemic of "mentally ill" children surpass that of previous generations. So what went wrong? It seems the more focus placed on mental illness could be linked to the rise in said mental illness among children. To be normal is now a rarity and has been replaced with anxiety, depression and ADHD. Diet, screens, gentle parenting and a complete shift in the culture seem to be the culprit. Then the gang discuss how the rise of Only Fans and plastic surgery factor in. We have a new segment of the show, Get Canceled Confessions. Please continue to send your confessions - the good, the bad, and definitely the dirty - to getcanceledinfo@gmail.com and Sheryl will read them on the show!DISCLAIMER: This show is for entertainment purposes only. Dating apps and websites are booming right now as people look for ways to leverage to find love or even just companionship. Liesel Sharabi of Arizona State University compiled a meta-analysis of a huge number of studies about the connection between online dating and mental health and the results? Kind of bad news. People who use the apps compulsively, swiping all day long, are much more likely to be depressed and anxious. But were they depressed because they used the apps or did the use the apps because they were depressed? We'll get into that, plus the terrifying imminent AI dating revolution. Then we talk to Dr. Sarah Jerstad, the Clinical Director of Psychological Services at Children's Minnesota about what kids are going through amid the ICE presence, what the short and long term effects of this activity have been and will be, and how parents and other adults can best help them.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. Bipin Subedi, MD, explores how health systems can better care for patients with severe mental illness who cycle between hospitals, homelessness, addiction, and the justice system. He argues that acute inpatient treatment, while essential, is rarely sufficient on its own. Preventing the revolving door of repeated hospitalizations requires psychiatry to extend beyond hospital walls and build integrated systems that follow patients into the community.Drawing on his leadership at NYU Bellevue and his background in forensic psychiatry, Dr. Subedi describes a model of care built on sustained relationships, flexibility, and continuity. He reflects on how programs like transitional housing and mobile post-discharge support can provide the “scaffolding” patients need when insight and executive function are impaired by psychosis. The conversation closes with practical guidance on strengthening medication adherence—particularly through thoughtful use of long-acting injectables—and on meeting patients where they are to advance more humane, effective care.Bipin Subedi, MD, is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and Chief of Psychiatry at NYU Bellevue Hospital. New filing just dropped in the Mickey Stines case, and it raises more questions than it answers. The former Letcher County sheriff charged with murdering Judge Kevin Mullins is asking a court to declare him ineligible for the death penalty based on serious mental illness or intellectual disability. His attorneys cite Kentucky's 2022 statute barring execution for defendants with qualifying conditions. But the motion names no diagnosis, attaches no medical documentation, and offers no specifics about what condition Stines allegedly has.Kentucky law requires one of four diagnoses — schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, or delusional disorder — with a documented history and active symptoms at the time of the offense. The only time this law has ever been applied in a Kentucky courtroom, the defendant had a lifetime of institutional records and expert consensus backing the claim. The judge called it "not a close case."We examine whether Stines can meet that bar. The defense has witness testimony describing paranoid behavior, a jail evaluation noting active psychosis days after the shooting, and Stines' own claims about California encephalitis. But the prosecution has the surveillance video, medical records where Stines denied any mental health symptoms the day before the killing, and the fact that no qualifying diagnosis has been made public. Plus, a sealed psychiatric evaluation from July 2025 that the defense hasn't been able to get into the record. Is this a real mental health claim or a strategic play from a defense team running out of options? We break down the law, the precedent, and the evidence.#MickeyStines #KevinMullins #TrueCrimeToday #KentuckyLaw #DeathPenalty #InsanityDefense #LetcherCounty #MentalIllnessDefense #CourthouseShooting #TrueCrimeJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? "A certain sort of dogged obsessiveness seems to help. I remember hearing Tobias Wolfe speak once that talent is wonderful and widely distributed on Earth, but sitting down and putting in the hours is where it's at," says Mary Margaret Alvarado, who wrote "That's Somebody's Son" for The Atavist. It's a little later than planned, but here we feature Mary Margaret Alvarado's piece for The Atavist Magazine titled “That's Somebody's Son: Three Mothers, One Struggle: saving their children with schizophrenia.” It's a piece that that Mia, as Mary Margaret goes by, pitched more than a year ago and it was rejected. But Mia went back to the drawing board, basically wrote the entire thing, came back, and boom here we are. We're going to hear from Seyward Darby about her side of the table and why this piece was at first rejected and that special feeling when a great pitch comes across the transom.Mary Margaret Alvarado is a multi-faceted writer with her poetry and nonfiction appearing in The Iowa Review, The Kenyon Review, VQR, Outside, and The Georgia Review, among other publications.
