Episode 61 of the Stories to Love podcast is up! Our guest today is Sadeqa Johnson.Sadeqa Johnson is the award-winning author of And Then There Was Me, Second House From the Corner, Love in a Carry-on Bag and Yellow Wife. Yellow Wife is a 2022 Hurston/Wright Foundation Legacy finalist, a BCALA Literary Honoree, the Library of Virginia's Literary People's Choice Award winner, and a Barnes & Noble book club pick in paperback. Her other accolades include winning the National Book Club Conference Award, the Phillis Wheatley Book Award, and the USA Best Book Award for Best Fiction. She is a Kimbilio Fellow and teaches in the MFA program at Drexel University. Originally from Philadelphia, she currently lives near Richmond, Virginia, with her husband and three children. In this episode, Sadeqa and I discussed how she married family history and a loose YA idea to come up with The House of Eve. We talked about how she navigates history as an author and a second point of view in The House of Eve that begged to be unearthed. Finally we talked about the story within a story that nudged its way into the bookI loved this conversation with Sadeqa, and I took so much away from it, notably how intuitive she is. Her stories, her ideas, the way she pieces parts of The House of Eve together…she was open to these changes. She even had mentioned it with Yellow Wife…that that story chose her, and it was the catalyst that nudged her off the contemporary fiction path to historical fiction. It felt like so many aspects and features of The House of Eve chose her too. To me, this episode was a reminder to keep my ears and eyes up. Maybe heed those nudges. Perhaps not self-reject quite as quickly. And as a storyteller, listen to what our characters are trying to say. At the moment, I'm editing my first book in my Harlequin series coming out spring of 2024, and re-listening to this conversation came at a perfect time. Inspiration, Ideation and Innovation — chat with Naveen LakkurFor this episode, I had a very stimulating conversation with Naveen Lakkur, the founder and Chief Innovation Coach at the Institute of Inspiring Innovation and a serial author with three books to his name. As a practitioner, he has built companies, mentored and implemented commercial ideas worldwide, and identified methods and models from these experiences that can enrich the experiences of entrepreneurs and innovators.Mr. Lakkur defines innovation as the creation of something that is new or doing something different or making something better. It is viewed not as an exclusive exercise but a democratic one and an opportunity for all entrepreneurs and executives to expand their horizons by combining creativity with innovation and imbibing human values to generate meaningful ideas.Learnings from BooksIn his first book “Inseparable Twins”, Lakkur introduces the concept of paired principles, such as values and innovation — concepts that are dissimilar from each other but generate a new power when they come together. The second book, “FOUND: Transforming Your Unlimited Ideas Into One Sustainable Business” is a Book for Ideation, won four international awards, including the ‘USA Best Book Awards' in the entrepreneurship category. It is targeted at people looking to work smart by helping them categorize different ideas and identify the winning one. No idea is a bad idea, and the book teaches readers to classify them by sorting and distilling, take responsibility and action, and utilize them to bring out their potential. It emphasizes that ideation is a crucial step in the innovation journey that many entrepreneurs tend to overlook. His third book “a Little Extra™: A Book of Illustrations for Extraordinary Results” uses brief and powerful messages for developing the right mindset for success. Lakkur pushes the point that only a little extra is required to change the outcome, to overcome the gap between the ordinary and extraordinary. All three books emphasize the need to link human values with innovation to make it meaningful and to democratize innovation by giving everyone the knowledge and power to innovate.Create. Operate. Disrupt.Lakkur uses Indian mythology or the principle of God as a metaphor to explain the fundamentals of innovation. He identifies the holy Hindu Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva with the three letters in GOD — ‘G' as Generator, played by Brahma; ‘O' as Operator, the role played by Vishnu, and ‘D' or disruptor, which is Shiva. Through this, he shows how even godly roles are organizationally well-defined and are metaphors for an innovation journey or a product lifecycle. One has to create, operate, and disrupt, and keep reinventing — these elements are the foundation of entrepreneurship.Another principle is that of the inseparable twins. The consorts of these gods represent the paired principles that Lakkur proposes. Brahma's wife, Saraswati, as a goddess of knowledge, counterbalances his role as a generator, rather main resource provider for creation. For Vishnu, the cash flow required for operations — from fundraising to revenue generation to expense management and investment — is represented in the form of his wife, Lakshmi, goddess of wealth. Shiva's wife Shakti symbolizes the power that is the essential resource for disruption. They are ideally paired to bring optimal results. The takeaway is that entrepreneurs need to realize that it is not a single approach, but the application of these paired principles that enhance their creativity and enables their mission & vision.

Scott is now an award-nominated-author of the book, “The Surging Team“, which was honored as an Award-Winning Finalist in the Business Management & Leadership category by the 2015 USA Best Book Awards and is now available on Amazon, as well as the author of an innovative video training series, “10 BOLDskills for Accelerated Team Success“, as an exciting companion resource to his book. Favorite Quote “If you are frozen by fear, look down, stay in your three-foot world and take one step forward at a time”~Mark Owen Key Points 1. Learn to be on the Lookout for Opportunities within the Problems So often the difference between a successful person and a failure is simply perspective. One will choose to see a set of circumstances as an opportunity, another as a problem. The better you can become at asking quality questions and searching for the opportunity in adversity, the more successful you will be. So often it has been said that the greatest fortunes are made during the greatest recessions and this is true in life as well, if you can find a way to make any challenge or “failure” a positive, you will succeed at whatever you set your mind to. 2. Engage Your Team with Stories  If you are looking to build a dynamic and surging team, it is essential that you engage the team in whatever task they have before them. The greatest way to achieve this is through the art of storytelling. Learn to craft masterful stories about where the team is headed, to tell masterful stories about adversity that has been overcome and successes in the past, and you will have a team with an unstoppable connection and vision. 3. Learn to Build on Strengths The greatest mistake any leader can make is placing his subordinates in a place of weakness. Often, team members with excellent potential must be let go simply because upper management never bothered to find out what they were really good at and what made them tick and therefore put them in a place where they could not thrive. Do yourself and your team a favor and take some time to connect with them, learn their strengths, learn their weaknesses, and put them in positions reflective of their personality. When you do, your team will develop unstoppable momentum in business and in life. 4. Relationships Matter At the heart of everything we do in this life is relationships. They amplify the human experience and give some sense of meaning to our confusing and often frustrating existence. If you get the relationship piece right, your life will be full and joyful, if you get it wrong, no amount of success will fulfill you.

Seeing his torment, his wife, Izzy, prods him to explain. He tells of being a black child growing up in the racially charged 1960s. Inspired to overcome the racism and class status imposed on blacks, he dreams of a life bigger than that lived by most everyone he knows in the small Virginia town of Canaan. He is resented by friends and family for desiring a life better than theirs. Among the smartest in his class, Evan becomes a target of white kids threatened by the forced integration of their schools. Caught in a crossfire of hate from whites and his own people, who question whether he is black enough, Evan is often alone and bewildered. Only the love of his great grandmother, Mama Jennie, and his mentor, Bojack, keeps him on track. Together, they help Evan find perspective and peace.

The book is this year's double winner of the USA Best Book Awards for Eastern Religions and Non-fiction World History. The Buddha from Babylon: The Lost History and Cosmic Vision of Siddhartha Gautama By Harvey Kraft Harvey Kraft explores human history from a spiritual perspective, rather than the traditional method based on military conquests. His research method employs archaeological findings, translating and interpreting mythic literature and iconography, unearthing hidden meanings embedded in ancient linguistics, and exploring the cosmology of existence through visionary insights. As a student of Buddhism for forty-seven years, his personal quest has been to unearth the meaning of Buddhist wisdom. Mr. Kraft’s new biography of Siddhartha Gautama is the culmination of his aspiration to explore the Buddha’s original teachings and enlightened scope. Reviewers have recognized it as a “seminal work.” Today Mr. Kraft lives with his family in California. He is a sought-after speaker and consultant. In 1998 Mr. Kraft lost his 23-year-old daughter, Lani, after a heart transplant operation. She had encouraged her father to share his understanding of Buddhism. There is virtually no education in our medical schools or the schools that train our counselors and therapists about the disease of addiction. While there are many breakthroughs occurring in our understanding of the disease of addiction as a genetic, neurological, social and spiritual disease, there has been no serious effort—outside of Integral Recovery—to bring all of these disparate fields of study under one roof and knit them together so that they actually work and cover all the essential bases of this disease. The Integral Recovery map provides the evolutionary scaffolding for us to hold a truly holistic, integral approach to healing our beloved addicts, and Integral Recovery practice is the vehicle that carries us on this journey. This evolutionary framework is grounded in John Dupuy’s two decades of working with addicts and their families, a decade’s work of using Integral Recovery in his own healing journey, and also in his work with his many students and clients. In this lecture, John Dupuy dialogues with Dr. Bob Weathers about the past, present, and future of Integral Recovery and how attendees can apply this knowledge and these practices to their own lives and to the lives of those with whom they work. Dupuy also uses visual aids to facilitate a deeper understanding of the Integral Recovery map and the evolutionary framework that it provides. Once one understands this map, they will never see the world or the disease of addiction in the same way. Those who view this lecture will be able to: - Describe the Integral Recovery approach. - Identify who and what an addict truly is—not someone who is abusing drugs or chemically dependent. - Understand the disease of addiction in a more deeply integral and holistic way. - Describe the basics of the Integral Recovery map and the practices that are essential for recovery from addiction. Speaker Bio: John Dupuy is the founder of Integral Recovery, a revolutionary approach to the treatment of addiction and alcoholism. He has over two decades’ experience working with addicts and their families and has co-founded two wilderness therapy programs. Dupuy travels internationally to teach and inspire on the subjects of Integral Recovery, Integral Transformative Practice, and the use of brainwave entrainment technology to deepen one’s meditation practice in the treatment of addiction, depression, PTSD, and other mental disorders. He is CEO of iAwake Technologies, has taught at John F. Kennedy University for four years, and now teaches online courses to both individuals in recovery and professionals at the Integral Recovery Institute. Dupuy also coaches individuals privately via Skype. He is the author of Integral Recovery: A Revolutionary Approach to the Treatment of Addiction and Alcoholism, winner of the 2013 USA Best Book Award in Health: Addiction & Recovery. A passionate blues guitarist, singer and songwriter, Dupuy has recorded three albums of original material.
