The final frontier of Christian filmmaking is -- horror. It's a genre that captivates even the most insular Christian artists, so it's natural that attempts have been made to create heart-pounding films that still manage to carry a biblical message. THR3E, based on the novel by prolific Christian thriller/fantasy author Ted Dekker, is a deeply confusing endeavor in this category that gets so hung up on trying to do everything that it does nothing. A terrorist called the Riddle Killer targets Kevin Parson, a handsome seminary student, by planting bombs that Kevin must diffuse by calling upon his knowledge of Bible verses. Meanwhile, Kevin is haunted by the sins of his past and the trauma of abuse he suffered at the hands of his bizarre family. As Kevin's sanity unravels, so does the plot, launching into a series of elaborate twists that test the patience of even the most devout cinema-goer. Joining us in the Sunday School classroom this week is author Maggie Siebert, whose debut book BONDING is a collection of terrifying and deeply compelling short stories that inspire waves of dread. Since Maggie is a horror movie expert with a Catholic background, we ask her - is effective Christian horror even possible? Day 4 has come to a close and these songs are sounding better than ever.As Kevin predicted in episode 1, each of these songs have really come to life within the last 24 hours.Today, we started by adding acoustic and electric guitar tracks to two songs. We also tracked some keyboard layers and even threw a mandolin into the mix! Today, all the pressure was on me  when we put down some lead vocal tracks. Historically, this is my least favorite part of the creation process, but after watching a Bob Dylan documentary with Kevin a few days ago, I came out with a new perspective on what makes a good lead vocal line. You don't have to necessarily be an incredible singer to create incredible songs! Performance is just as important (if not more) than pitch!I also have to give a big shout out to Kevin's roommate, Emily Morales (Star Moles) for giving an incredible vocal performance on back up vox for my song, The Good Things, Too.As day 4 comes to a close, I'm feeling great about where the EP is at this point. But I'm also sad that this process is coming to a close. I've learned so much over these last few days that I'll take with me along my musical journey.Tune in tomorrow for one last installment of the Philly EP series :)

The most predictive signal for economic action is search and it's the gateway to all lower funnel activities, says Kevin Krim, CEO of EDO, a data company that correlates television advertising with search. I’ve covered Kevin’s work over the past 10 years in his top digital leadership roles at Bloomberg and CNBC. We’ve spoken many times about the changes of TV news from linear to a digital media.   It’s been a fascinating sector to cover and Kevin has been way in front of it for many years. Since 2105, he has headed EDO, a TV data firm that allows programmers and advertisers the tools to understand the outcome of TV ads by understanding Web search.  The company works with many leading programmers.  Recently, it  announced its newest partnership with Univision. Separately, Kevin and his wife Marina founded  an incredible non-profit organization called Choose Creativity.  It is an educational initiative that empowers children and adults to build resilience, creative confidence, and social-emotional skills through engagement.  It is being widely adopted.  And is particularly valued during the pandemic. As Kevin explains in this interview, the organization was founded in the wake of the terrible loss of his two children.  It’s an amazing, inspiring story.   I hope you will visit ChooseCreativy.org to learn more, and will join me in making a contribution.

Kevin is BACK! And upon his return we begin a discussion on a topic that has been requested by many of our listeners; is it unscriptural or sinful to use musical instruments in worship to God? One of the defining characteristics of the Church of Christ is the utilization of acapella singing in worship. As Kevin and Lee both have a long history within the Churches of Christ, both have held the conviction that God does not desire nor does the Bible authorize the use of musical instruments in worship to him within the New Covenant era. It goes without saying that both Kevin and Lee's perspective on this topic has changed, and this episode is part one of a three part series that discusses why their perspective has changed on this topic. In 2012, Kevin engaged in his final formal debate of his preaching career with Jason Weatherly. In this episode, we take audio from Kevin's first affirmative, and much like the 2019 Avengers had to contend with a time-travelling 2014 Thanos, Kevin and Lee 'debate' with 2012 Kevin.  This episode was a blast to record, and we hope our audience enjoys what becomes a lively discussion, especially in part 2. The Buzz converts ambient sound into haptic vibrations using vibratory motors. The idea is that as the user continually wears The Buzz for extended periods of time, the user's brain will naturally begin to re-wire itself to better process and make sense of the subtleties in vibrations and what each vibration represents. This device stems from the research and work David has been conducting in his lab for years around sensory substitution, which he goes into thorough detail about throughout his newest NYT best-selling book, Livewired. Jacque provides the perspective of both an audiologist and a mother to a 13 year old deaf daughter, Jade, who has been wearing The Buzz for months. According to Jacque, Jade has seen a dramatic increase in her speech improvement and ability to discriminate speech. In addition, The Buzz serves as a body-worn alerting device as it helps to notify Jade that there are sounds coming from behind her or in the distance. As Kevin mentions, The Buzz provides "tri-modal" communication as it complements speech and lip-reading as a third modality to provide even more context to the user. Oxygenated Water with Anna Iversen Anna Iversen joins The Next 100 Days to talk about oxygenated water. She works for a company called Kure which produces the water. Today she's going to tell us about benefits. The water is so good that Anna even uses it to make her tea and coffee. When going to a restaurant, Anna will have one in her bag. Kure were kind enough to send Graham and Kevin some water to try. Lets see what they think of it. What Makes Oxygenated Water Different? Kure comes from the most pristine source in Cornwall. Not only is it exceptionally high-quality spring water, Kure has also supercharged it with oxygen. At Kure, they've developed a technology in which they can encapsulate oxygen into tiny bubbles. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/what-is-kuremp4.mp4   The magic really lies inside of the bubbles. She tells us that it has taken over 7 years for them to refine the technology. The bubbles have to be sufficiently small so that they can remain intact. Anna believes that's the issue many other companies have not been able to resolve. Basically, if the bubble is too big, it will burst, which would make it a load of marketing hype and nothing else.               What Are The Benefits of Oxygen Water Anna says the reason we need oxygen water and why we perform better if we have it is because of the modern way in which we live. People are constantly compromised, bombarded with stress from their daily life, eating junk food, not sleeping enough. The way in which we produce energy for us to function properly is that inside our cells we have tiny organelles called mitochondria. The mitochondria are like little factories that produce energy for our cells in order for our body to work the way it ought to. It's a natural process, so as you age, your body produces less energy, which is why we ache, have pains, feel tired, and our skin wrinkles. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Benefits.mp4 Anna also thinks that because we're modern people, we come to accept that all these aches and pains are just a part of ordinary life. This shouldn't have to be the case. She thinks people accept these aches and pains very early on in life and we just learn to live with it when life doesn't have to be that way. As Kevin stares at the label on the bottle, he can see that Kure water won't disappoint. He says it's: Non carbonated, natural spring water, balanced Ph7, No chemicals, no additives, 0 calories and fat, 0 cholesterol and sodium. Kevin said it strikes him that the only thing in the bottle is water and oxygen.   Anna's Journey Anna's always been into her health and well being. Throughout the majority of her career she didn't have as much time to focus on it as she wanted too. Around 5-6 years ago, both of her parents died with cancer and it came as such a shock. So quickly and at the same time. She had spent a year going backwards and forwards to Sweden to look after them both. When her mum was lying in her death bed, Anna had strangely downloaded a book on her Kindle about cancer being a metabolic disorder. The book blew her mind. Especially at such a pivotal moment in her life. She knew she had to change her career. If she had only just grasped this now, she needed to let the rest of the world know. Once you start looking at health from Anna's perspective you start to realise how important it actually is. If we don't have enough energy, our bodies don't produce enough energy, that means that things start breaking. So if we can improve the cellular energy production, we can stop things from breaking and heal things that are broken.   http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Anna.mp4 My Thoughts I was lucky enough to receive a crate of Kure water to try over the past month. Having consumed one every day, I must say I do see a result. 1.My skin gets spots from time to time.

With this episode of the Legal Tech StartUp Focus Podcast (www.legaltechstartupfocus.com/podcast), your host, Charlie Uniman, welcomes Kevin Miller, CEO of LegalSifter (www.legalsifter.com). According to its website, LegalSifter " . . . fixes many of the pre-signature contract challenges [its customers] face. It reads contracts and gives in-context advice. It's fast, easy-to use, and is configurable for [the customer's] organization." LegalSifter's website also describes its post-signature contract management tools where "[LegalSifter] keep[s] track of [a customer's] contracts using A.I., easy-to-use contract software, attorneys, paralegals, and a passion for technology and service."   Kevin begins by describing his professional journey, first, acquiring a JD, next undertaking a brief stint in legal practice, then on to getting an MBA and working as a senior manager at growth-stage companies outside the legal tech sector. This description leads to the story of how Kevin became the CEO, about five years ago, of LegalSifter, a startup squarely in the legal tech vertical.   Charlie follows up with questions about LegalSifter's product offerings and we learn that LegalSifter offers both pre-signing and post-signing contract analysis and management services. As Kevin describes those offerings, his company uses natural language processing technology (its "legalsifters") to surface ("sift" out), and give advice concerning, key provisions in contracts. Kevin also describes his company's "Concierge" services where, AI and related technologies, together with LegalSifter's personnel, an enterprise can have LegalSifter act as the enterprise's "contract librarian" to assist with post-signing contract management.   Kevin next offers some helpful "words to the wise" advice for fellow legal tech startup leaders. First, Kevin emphasizes the importance of post-sale customer nurturing and the how even very early-stage legal tech startups should target hiring people whose talents are particularly geared to post-sale customer success. Kevin then notes that a well-designed and ongoing "land and expand" strategy (i.e., growing the number of users at an existing customer) is an oft-neglected path to solid sales growth. Kevin concludes by talking about a realization that came to him only after several months of leading LegalSifter. This is when Kevin came to understand that managing a startup did not mean tearing up the big company "playbook" that he had developed in previous roles, but instead that leading an early stage company meant just the opposite; namely, calling on that playbook's management strategies to manage a startup like LegalSifter.

Kevin has published and presented globally on trends in higher education, student success, degree-completion strategies for low-income and first-generation students, and change management and leadership in higher education.Today, he joins Education Empowered host Jason Belland to share some of his wisdom. Kevin and Jason discuss wellness as it relates to students, staff, and faculty alike, how institutions can best address growing mental health challenges, and the intersection of wellbeing and equity in education. Plus, Kevin shares what trends in the ed sector he is most excited for in 2021.Key Takeaways:Student & Staff Well Being. Over the last decade, there’s been a gradual increase in mental health issues among students – a problem that is compounded by the fact that there are simply not enough professionals on campus to help all of these students. Kevin suggests “upstream solutions” – like teaching students resiliency, stress management, and other behavioral changes – to help prevent more concerning downstream problems.  Technology Steps Up to the Challenge. Telehealth has opened new opportunities to treat and meet students (and staff) where they need when they need without stigma. Access to new tools for tracking data and analytics has also helped faculty and staff better serve students. As Kevin put it, “If we're going to be constrained on resources, we need to put the resources that we do have into the students who need us the most.”Getting a Holistic Picture. When working with a student, you must take into account the whole student’s background. Everyone faces unique challenges and stresses in their life, and being able to take into account a student’s personal background gives you context to better serve them.--Education Empowered is brought to you by Salesforce.org in partnership with Mission.org. Though some thought it might never end, 2020 is now only 48 hours away from becoming a near memory of the past - joining thousands of other years in the ever-accumulating book of time. And although 2020 will largely be remembered as one of the “worst” years of our modern lives, 2020 will always be special to us in that it gave birth to FinalVibe. Because of that, we bring you episode 30 as a collection of personal reflections from FinalVibe CEO Kevin Reape. As Kevin reminds us all, “a crisis is a terrible thing to waste.”In this very unique solo episode, Kevin speaks openly about the deeper origins of FinalVibe. More specifically, you’ll hear him monologue about his thoughts on death, whether religion or science or something else is “getting it right,” and whether or not the way we live within our very limited perspectives matters. As you’ll hear him say, FinalVibe doesn’t have the answer for you or anyone else. But what FinalVibe does offer us all is the opportunity to redefine our lives through legacy. For some, that will mean prioritizing their health. For others, it might mean starting a new business or learning a new career skill. And for others yet, it could mean going back to school, starting a family, or even starting your own podcast. As cliche as it may seem, the possibilities really are endless. All in all, the point of episode 30 is to encourage everyone to think deeply about your existence and what story you’d like to tell with the life you’ve been given. In 367 days, 2021 will be over just as soon as it started. Will you experience it to the fullest or let it fall short? If you enjoyed our podcast in 2020, would you consider leaving us a positive review on your streaming platform of choice? One of the most frequent comments we get from those interacting with FinalVibe for the first time is this: "I don’t get it. It seems intriguing, but I don’t get it. Is FinalVibe something you do? A club? What is it?”We’re glad you asked, which is why we’ve dedicated an entire episode to elaborating on that very question. What is FinalVibe? What was it designed to be and what has it become? And perhaps most importantly of all, how you can start taking practical steps today toward crafting the legacy you’ll one day leave behind? As Kevin has said on numerous occasions, we believe FinalVibe is for everyone, but it won’t be for everyone all the time. There is a time to be ambitious and a time to sit and wait, but the beauty of FinalVibe is that living a legacy-minded life searches for meaning across all seasons. And, of course, remember that whether you decide to channel the FinalVibe mentality in your own life is 100% up to you. We’re just here to provide the resources and motivations for those who decide to take the risk. This episode also touches on the power of perspective, how failure might be the most common denominator among wildly successful people, and why we’re thankful for JK Rowling and the Harry Potter universe. If you’ve been enjoying our podcast, would you consider leaving us a positive review on your streaming platform of choice? Kevin Farrell is Associate Professor of English at Radford University, where he teaches courses in both composition and literature. His research interests include popular music, modernism, postmodernism, and Irish literature, particularly the fiction of James Joyce. His work has appeared in the James Joyce Quarterly, The Journal of Popular Music Studies, and New Hibernia Review. This study explores the political rhetoric of Rhiannon Giddens’ Freedom Highway, contextualizing Giddens’ narratives of subaltern American experience in reference to high modernist conceptions of history. Released in 2017, Freedom Highway presents a portrait of American history, drawing conscious connections between various modes of white supremacy (slavery, Jim Crow, domestic terrorism, and contemporary police violence) and various modes of black resistance (Civil Rights and Black Lives Matter). As Kevin suggests, while Freedom Highway is not, strictly speaking, a concept album, its overarching theme is the human cost of oppression, manifested most powerfully in its accounts of stolen and murdered children. For Giddens, this theme connects generations of families across centuries, and she uses the past as means to comment upon current events, construing history in personal and familial, rather than abstract, terms. While her approach has roots in both folk and popular music traditions, Giddens, consciously or not, also echoes conceptions of history and memory found in the work of T.S. Eliot, William Faulkner, and James Joyce, so that her vision of personalized history, oppression, and resistance offers a Twenty-First century American counterpart to Joyce’s “nightmare of history” from Ulysses. By applying modernist literary ideas to a contemporary work of popular music, I hope to reveal how Giddens writes, rewrites, imagines, and reimagines American history to challenge the American present.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21685169)

How to Use a Mentor Effectively What You Will Learn: How Kevin first became an entrepreneur in the early 1980s by way of his family business and how he grew and helped create an entire industry Why Kevin co-authored his book “Mentor to Millions” in an effort to teach others how to find and how to use a mentor effectively Why writing a bestselling book was a key goal Kevin set for himself, and how he and his own mentor Mark Timm created the book based on their relationship Why going all-in with your mentor and committing to being a good student is crucial for you to reap the rewards of the relationship What advice Kevin suggests for finding the right mentor to work with, and how he leveraged connections he already had to find one of his ideal business mentors Why now, even during the chaos of the global pandemic, is the ideal time to look for and begin working with a mentor What tremendous benefits you can receive as both a mentor and as a mentee, and why the relationship should be mutually beneficial Why it is important to be clear and set your expectations at the beginning of the mentor-mentee relationship What remarkable opportunities, business ventures, and networking growth Kevin was able to receive from being a mentor The Mutually Beneficial Power of the Mentor-Mentee Relationship The mentor-mentee relationship is about more than just learning from a more experienced, seasoned business professional. When done correctly, both parties can reap incredible rewards and discover new opportunities. These trusted relationships can lead to new business introductions and even new business ventures for both the mentor and the student. In this episode of Onward Nation, encore guest and “Original Shark” on Shark Tank Kevin Harrington discusses the broad benefits that make these relationships so rewarding, he discusses how to find and how to use a mentor effectively to get the most out of the relationship, and he shares stories of his own experiences both as a mentee and as a mentor to others. How to Find a Great Mentor Before you can learn how to use a mentor effectively, you have to find the right mentor that fits your business and its needs. As Kevin explained during the interview, the best way to find the ideal mentor is to explore your existing relationships with the lawyers, accountants, and other professionals you’re already working with. Your professional network knows your business and your values and can potentially connect you with a great mentor who would be a good fit for your business and its current challenges. As Kevin suggested, ask yourself who you write checks to and start mining those relationships. How to Use a Mentor Effectively Once you’ve formed a relationship with a mentor (or as a mentor with a new mentee), be clear and upfront about your expectations. As the mentee, it’s your job to prove to your mentor that you are their best, most attentive student. Respect the wisdom your mentor is willing to share, and take action based on their recommendations. If you “don’t have time” to follow their guidance, why should they spend the time mentoring you? Learning how to use a mentor effectively is about listening, communicating, and then following through. If you put in the effort, the rewards both you and your mentor will discover may surprise you. About Kevin Harrington As an “Original Shark” on the hit TV show Shark Tank, the creator of the infomercial, pioneer of the “As Seen on TV” brand, and co-founding board member of the Entrepreneur’s Organization, Kevin Harrington has pushed past all the questions and excuses to repeatedly enjoy 100X success. Good Morning…I’m Stephen Woessner, CEO of Predictive ROI and your host for Onward Nation. One of the things that I love most about my role at Predictive — is that every single day — I have an opportunity to talk with, work alongside with, and teach and share with business owners just like you. They might own a marketing or advertising agency as I do, or they might be a rockin’ awesome business coach, or maybe the owners of a consultancy — and they too love being in the trenches being helpful…sharing the best of what they’ve got with their audience…and as a result…they’ve started to — or have already — built a nation of true fans. All of the what, why’s, and how to’s for build a nation of true fans is what we’re going to focus on in today’s solocast. I’ll map it out in full transparency — and as always — please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I’m happy to help. As you’ll hear in a few minutes — your first step in building your nation of true fans has nothing to do with the actual content delivery platform — channel — or the type of cornerstone content you create — but has everything to do with the value and helpfulness of what you will be creating, sharing, and delivering to your audience, because your nation of true fans will be built on a foundation of valuable, super helpful content that your audience can use to be better at their jobs everyday. Your nation of true fans will know your heart and that your intention is to help them grow, to learn, and to be better. It never feels like a transactional relationship. They don’t feel like you’re trying to monetize them. Do they spend money on your services and what your team provides — yes — your true fans do. And the rest of your audience are there just for the golden nuggets — and that’s 100 percent okay. So let’s begin walking down this path — you and I are going to take a look at strategy and tactics for how you can build a nation of true fans from the cornerstone content you are creating on a consistent basis. The way you win long-term is by creating content that develops and nurtures long-term relationships with your audience. These relationships are what Wired Magazine founder Kevin Kelly calls “True Fans.” And in my opinion — true fans represent your ROI Scorecard’s ultimate vital metric. To paraphrase Kelly — any business owner can create a solid revenue stream around a community of approximately 1,000 people when they are “True Fans” of what the company sells and when there is a connection between the company and its fans based on the value provided. In this solocast — I will illustrate how a consistent effort toward creating consistent cornerstone content can create a nation of true fans for your business, too. Your nation of true fans will be fans of you, fans of your point of view, and fans of the helpful content you create and share. Your fans will support you because of the sacred bond you have built with them and because you consistently delivered massive value through your content. Okay — now let’s get dialed in on building your nation of true fans: a sense of community, collaboration, and profitability around your business. And could there be a more critical time than right now to do this for your business, Onward Nation? If you get this right — it will be a super helpful strategy to not only help you come roaring out the other side of this recession — but — this strategy will help you future proof your business for years to come. Let’s begin by breaking the phrase “Build a nation of true fans” into its three core ingredients. The first is “build”, the second is “nation”, and the third is “true fans.” Ingredient #1: Build…as in your platform. How would you begin to “build” a nation of true fans? You’d begin with selecting the form of cornerstone content where you intend to share your insights and wisdom with your audience — or eventual audience. Whether that’s a… Podcast Speaking Blog Video series Research project Writing a book Or something else The platform you choose is irrelevant from a tech perspective. Any or all of the above can help you build a nation of true fans. The tech behind it all is relatively easy. Is there a learning curve? Sure. Will you feel at times like you are trying to fly the space shuttle with so many knobs and buttons to push? Sure. How does Facebook Live work? What time of day should I create a story on Instagram? What kind of camera and mic are best if I want to be a serious YouTuber? All of these are tech questions — and within an afternoon with your best friend Google — you can solve those problems and find the answers as long as you don’t let the fear of the unknown become paralyzing to you. So let’s shift our focus away from the tech — and instead — focus on the value you will be providing through those channels? What’s your story? How will you serve your audience? How will you make what you are doing so valuable to their business or life, that they actually consider you to be indispensable? How will you become so consistent in the help, advice, recommendations, and over value that you are providing on a consistent basis — that you BUILD deposits in their emotional bank account? They begin to trust you — they begin to like you — and then because of them liking you and trusting you…they move even closer to you by truly KNOWING you. So, your first step in building your nation of true fans has nothing to do with the actual content delivery platform and has everything to do with the value of what you will be delivering — because your nation of true fans is built on VALUE. And if you get that right — the actual platform — or your conduit through which you share your value — will fall into place — and it will feel less stressful because the value you were called — put on this Earth to deliver — will then be in the driver’s seat. You, Onward Nation — will become unstoppable. Will there be profit to be made for your business because you built a nation of true fans? Of course. To date — Onward Nation has helped Predictive ROI generate over $4 million in revenue and we feel blessed and honored about that result outcome. And we believe that this result outcome was made possible because we never placed ourselves first. Ever. Now let’s shift our attention toward Ingredient #2: “Nation.” And I want to make sure we address this because we live in a world where bigger lists, bigger subscribers, massive downloads, huge customer lists, etc. etc. etc. is what attracts headlines and massive attention. You don’t need an email list of 100,000 people. You don’t need to have a podcast that gets a million downloads a month. You don’t need to have a customer list with 20,000 prospects on it. Nope. You don’t. That’s not your Nation. What you need — realistically — depending on the size of your business is somewhere between 100 to 1,000 high-qualified prospects. That’s it…100 to 1,000 of the very best prospects who precisely match your client avatar — in fact — your knowledge with some of these people is so deep that you can boldly claim them as your Dream 25 prospects. If you need a refresher on why your Dream 25 matters — go back to Episode 308 of Onward Nation — and I map it all out — how to figure out who your Dream 25 is — and — how to romance your Dream 25 so they understand how important they are to you. To take this point deeper — I want to share a very tangible example of a company that grew from zero to become a multi-billion a year company — yes — billion — with a capital B. My mentor, Darren Hardy, former publisher of SUCCESS Magazine…decided to interview my friend Cody Foster, co-founder of Advisors Excel and to share the interview on the SUCCESS CD that rides along with the magazine. During the interview with Darren, Cody shared several personal stories of very humble beginnings — and how those stories — helped shaped the kind of company Advisors Excel has become. A company packed full — wall to wall — of incredible people — a team whose sole focus is to deliver more and more value every day to the financial advisors around the country they are there to serve. And Advisors Excel team does it masterfully well. They have BUILT their platform — a platform that is indeed built on a solid foundation of value. But…did they build this platform by trying to serve the 60,000 financial advisors located in the state of Florida alone? No. How about all of the financial advisors up and down the west coast? Nope. Did they focus on spending large amounts of advertising dollars trying to reach everyone they could with their message of value, value, value? Not at all. Instead…they meticulously selected 1,000 of the very best financial advisors who they wanted to earn the opportunity to serve. Yes, Onward Nation, Cody shared with Darren that they built a list of 1,000 financial advisors — just 1,000 — and then they went to work to deliver more value than another other insurance marketing organization in the industry to the 1,000 advisors they wanted to work with. The 1,000 advisors became their Nation…and advisors outside of the Nation didn’t exist. Advisors Excel was solely focused on being the best they could be for this small group of prospects. So what was the result outcome? Well, in year 8 of the business…they reached over $8 billion in revenue. $8 billion, Onward Nation. When they are the right prospects — you don’t need 10,000…you actually only need a small number to make your business amazingly successful and profitable. 1,000 people — who you can love on — who you can support — who you can add value to — who then in turn are excited to do for you some of what you already shared with them. Okay — now let’s move to Ingredient #3 — True Fans We’ll begin by taking the number 1,000 — deeper — because it is a magical number and a vital priority for your business. According to Kevin Kelly, if a business created a base of customers who were more like fans — 1,000 True Fans — then that business could become sustainable and profitable by simply focusing on the needs of its true fans. And if you visit the Show Notes for today’s solocast…you will find a link to Kevin Kelly’s blog post as well as the long tail curve he created to illustrate the 1,000 true fans strategy. Kelly describes “True Fans” as customers who will help you mobilize and move your business onward to that next level. They are true fans of you — true fans of your message — true fans of your business. They will support you because of the sacred bond you have built with them. A bond that was built upon — and continues to be built upon — the foundation of the value you create, you deliver, and the value you share with them on a consistent basis. Whether you do that every day — every week — no matter what the schedule — no matter what the rhythm — the fact that you are consistent is what is important. According to Kevin, “A True Fan” is defined as someone who will purchase anything and everything you produce. They will drive 200 miles to visit your location. They will buy the super deluxe version of your product even though they already own the standard version, too. They have a Google Alert set for your name. They have bookmarked your website. They come to your product announcements — or — ribbon cutting ceremonies for a new office location. They come to your book signings and ask for you to sign their copy. They cannot wait for your next webinar — your next podcast episode — your next event — your next release of whatever. And the best way to increase sales for your company is to connect with your True Fans directly…so you need to have a platform built on value…see? We keep coming back to that foundational truth. Onward Nation, 1,000 true fans is a very reasonable number. As Kevin explains in his brilliant blog post… “if you added one fan a day, it would take only three years. True Fanship is doable. Pleasing a True Fan is pleasurable, and invigorating.” The key challenge is that you have to maintain direct contact with your 1,000 True Fans. And you do that through building your platform — delivering value — and making sure you are using the right conduit so it reaches your 1,000 true fans on a consistent basis. Again…it doesn’t matter if you use a podcast, blog, write a book, video series, or some other form of cornerstone content. What’s important to identify is not the form of content where you’re most comfortable — but — the platform your fans use the most. What’s the best conduit to them? For me — it’s this podcast, the books I write, the annual research we do, the webinars where I can teach longer form, and the videos we share every Sunday. But there is also another piece to True Fans…and that are the concentric circles of “Lesser Fans.” This segment of your audience will not purchase everything you produce, and may not seek out direct contact, but they will buy much of what you produce. The processes you develop to feed your True Fans will also nurture Lesser Fans. As you build your nation of True Fans, you will also add many more Lesser Fans. And as you are building…don’t avoid…don’t miss the opportunity to go deep…to develop intimacy with your audience…with your true fans. Onward Nation…that’s one of the reasons I ask for feedback so often. My team and I legitimately want to get better — but — I also want to hear from you — to get to know you — to learn from you — and to deliver even more value so Onward Nation becomes — and hopefully remains — your most favorite podcast. Okay…you now have a tangible recipe for building your own nation of true fans — and when you do — your nation will become this amazing, awesome, wonderful, beautiful, incredible community of people who are generous with their feedback and help guide your business in the right direction to deliver value. Consider Kevin Kelly’s lesson as you build out your cornerstone content. Ask yourself how you can continually add more and more value like Cody Foster and his team at Advisors Excel. Because when you build your nation — and focus on being helpful not transactions — your business, your team, and your life move onward to a completely new level. So with that…I want to say thank you again for taking the time to be here with me today. It’s always an honor to have you here. I want you to know how much I appreciate you sharing some of your invaluable 86,400 seconds you have in your day with me and the strategies we learn from today’s top business owners. And please continue to let me know what you think of Onward Nation…good or bad…I always want your feedback. That’s how we get better. Remember — now’s the time to double down — all of the data is on your side. Until next week — onward with gusto!

On this unique episode of the Cameron-Brooks podcast, we interview an alumni about his journey with multiple sclerosis and his positive mindset in handling adversity. Kevin Byrne, a former Army Apache Helicopter Pilot, who transitioned through the Cameron-Brooks program in 2000, recently volunteered to be a guest on our podcast.  Kevin has a heroic story to tell.  This podcast is unlike any other we have done in 100+ episodes. At first, I thought we were going to discuss Kevin's career and transition and maybe he did as well.  However, as I studied his LinkedIn profile, I noticed something particular about his career.  He has not been working for the last 3 years.  As Kevin says, he is twice retired.  First in 2000, he medically retired from the Army due to Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis and again in 2017 due to the effects of the debilitating disease. In this podcast, Kevin tells his story on continually adapting to his life situation and handling adversity.  He says, "This disease will never stop and never quit, so neither will I."  With this motto, he started a non-profit "Never Stop, Never Quit" to to raise money for larger/national organizations intent on finding a cure for, and managing the devastating effects of, multiple sclerosis. Prior to his "second" retirement, Kevin worked in Corporate America for 17 years in a variety of procurement and supply chain roles and organizations.  During this time, he also served on various non-profit boards such as the Oregon Chapter of National Multiple Sclerosis Society and West Point Society of Oregon.  Most significantly, he started blogging as an outlet to express emotions battling this disease.  He then turned those blogs into writing books and has written 5 books to include My MS and E which he wrote with his daughter, Eleanor.  All proceeds from his books support the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. From Kevin's website, here are his harsh realities: • There is nothing on the market today with the ability to cure my multiple sclerosis or send it into remission. • It is debatable whether or not my current medications are slowing the progression of my MS, giving me an extra year when, before, I only had a month. • There is no known way to recover function I have lost, or will lose, due to the damaging effects of my MS. • There is no way to predict, identify, or isolate early-onset MS, and eradicate the disease before it affects the next generation. • Not yet… Overcoming those realities are our dreams; the only possibilities for realization come in the form of research and development. Your financial support is needed if we are going to win this fight. Because it is a fight. The fight is not over and it won’t be over until a cure is found. It will never stop…nor will we It will never quit…nor will we This is why we fight! Please support our fight. Please consider a donation to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, supporting Kevin's daughter, Eleanor, in her personal fundraising efforts, or buying one of his books. You can follow Kevin on LinkedIn, his blog and website or his Amazon Author page.   Joel Junker

Welcome to another episode of Behind the Breakthrough. Todays guest is with the President of Whiteboard CRM Kevin Ducey. Kevin grew up being the skinny tall kid in high school where we then enrolled in the army learning about discipline, lessons that would follow him for the remainder or his life. Since leaving the army he worked in the staffing industry and then joined the Whiteboard team. He was completely new to the mortgage and technology space. Which resulted in imposter’s syndrome, and weight gain. Soon he found himself over 300lbs and cycling through weight loss and weight gain cycles, low energy and unhappy. He realized what was happening is something we all do, he was letting that little judgmental voice become his large voice. You know the…- “I don’t deserve this position, people in the office know more than me”- “I’m stressed so I deserve another few drinks”- “I’ve been working hard, it’s ok if I miss this workout”- “I can’t go to that fitness class, because I’m not fit and people will judge me” We have over 5,000 thoughts a day, some negative, some positive.. but you get to choose the thoughts you give power and energy to. As Kevin mentions, a little bit of imposture syndrome is healthy. It keeps our ego in check and leaves us striving to do more, be more, and learn more. The second you feel that small voice gaining traction dive into your cookie jar. Look at past wins, moments you inspired or lead others and remember that you can’t get to where you want to be over night. It’s small wins that add up to large dreams, that is how we breakthrough.*Behind the Breakthrough is an Industry Syndicate Original podcast--Want more of the best podcasts for Real Estate Agents and Mortgage Loan Officers?Download the new Industry Syndicate mobile app:iPhone: http://bit.ly/SyndicateAppleAndroid: http://bit.ly/SyndicateGoogle--Connect w/ Megan Anderson on social media:InstagramFacebookLinkedIn -- Follow the Industry Syndicate on social media: InstagramFacebookTwitterLinkedInⓒ 2020 Industry Syndicate podcast network

Ep. #21 - House of Freedom, located in Boynton, Oklahoma, has been helping veterans experiencing hunger, homelessness, and hopelessness in the community from the beginning. This organization was built on faith. Since starting, they’ve demonstrated a steadfast grit and grind to help others in their crisis. House of Freedom is the only non-profit dedicated to homeless men in this area. The House of Freedom has held to their original purpose of providing food, shelter, independence, and sustainability. But it was an instruction from God to the founder, Kevin Jackson that makes this podcast episode so unique and powerful. Kevin says he heard God tell him to give ALL of the nonprofit’s money to the church. After ensuring that he had indeed heard God correctly he shared this with his board members and by faith, he obeyed. After a few weeks Pastor Michael Todd, the Pastor of Transformation Church blessed Kevin with an unexpected miracle and proved that when God speaks and we obey, He’ll bless us in ways we could never imagine. Kevin says he had no idea this would happen. All he did was obey. I have a similar testimony when I trusted what God told me to do and I received a HUGE blessing in return as well. We don’t “give to get”. We simply hear God, trust and obey and things just happen.  It’s kind of difficult to explain all of this. You have to experience it to really understand it. As Kevin shares about the great things he’s doing to serve our communities, I also hope you hear from God in a way you’ve never heard Him before. The purpose of this podcast is to encourage and empower you. By listening to this I’m sure we’ve met that goal. Create a YouTube Channel with Kevin Appleby This podcast is about setting up a YouTube channel. Kevin Appleby has recently set one up and is going to tell us what this experience has been, why he is doing it, what the purpose is and what his hopes for it are. 21st century business accountant Kevin's YouTube channel targets accountants (hence the name!). More specifically, it aims at the sort of accountant that works inside a company and advises the business team running the organisation. The content is very much based on what Kevin teaches as part of his course called 21st Century Finance Business Partner. Now, you may be wondering why there is such an emphasis on the 21st century. We've been in the 21st century for 19 years now! But, with the 21st century has come a lot of change. When Kevin first started his career, he did virtually nothing using a computer. As time went on, Excel and other software became his friend. However, we're in a time that is so much in the finance world that it's becoming automated. This impacts the accountant because the routine work has well and truly disappeared through computer efficiency. Be vital rather than functional Daniel Priestly talks about being vital rather than functional his book, Key Person of Influence (click the picture for a link). Essentially, the functional will disappear, will be automated, will be replaced by IA, for example. The vital remains. For these accountants then, it doesn't seem so sunny-side up! However, Kevin thinks it is. The first episode on his YouTube channel talks about being VITAL. V - Vision strategy. This is all about the accountant being involved in the strategy of his business. I - Insight around the financial numbers (product profitability, customer profitability, and activity-based costing). T - Team. Do you understand what the rest of your business team needs of you? What insight are they needing from you as the accountant? A - Agility in change. An accountant's role is to be right in the middle of business change. Change is about doing some things and stopping others; about culture and attitude so, within the numbers, there's actually a lot to learn about people. L - Learning. There's always something new to learn. In fact, the first six videos are dedicated to what it means to be VITAL. How did the YouTube Channel come about? http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/How-did-this-come-about.mp4   With a YouTube channel, Kevin realised a series of material can be built across time, much like our podcast, The Next 100 Days. However, unlike a podcast, he decided that people's attention to a video isn't that great. 30 minutes of 40 minutes would be too long. It would be a quick dip into the classroom, 5 to 10 minutes being just right. Short and Sweet... In effect, Kevin replaced a webinar strategy with a YouTube strategy, through which clients can be driven toward 'tasters'. That way, if watchers liked the idea of the YouTube videos, then they would know a place to go to get a more detailed course. YouTube as Strategy   You want to attract regular watchers so that they subscribe to your channel. Then they get notifications every time a new video comes out. Much like our podcast, the aim is to get out content once a week. Refer to the channel in marketing posts for courses. As Kevin sets up a new course, you can use YouTube channels to give a taster of what you are up to as the manager of the course. Blog post. Each video about VITAL will be embedded in Kevin's blog post. Producing content When you look at it, the strategies used to optimise YouTube channels actually come within the scope of content strategies. Recently, we had Mark Taylor on the show, discussing how Google focusses on content. Think of the type of things that are on people's minds. You need to start thinking what are the questions your target audience are thinking - about business,

Kevin Costello is the President of the Steuben County Conference and Visitors Bureau, the official tourism promotion agency for Steuben County, NY. Kevin manages a team of five tourism professionals who tell the destination’s story with a strategic and research-based approach to increase accommodation occupancy and tourism expenditures within Steuben. In his previous position, Kevin served as Director of Economic Development and Tourism for the Town of Abingdon, Virginia. Kevin has developed several award-winning programs such as the Wine Trail of Botetourt County, the Upper James River Water Trail, the Abingdon Music Experience, and Rooted in Appalachia. Under Kevin’s leadership, the Abingdon Convention and Visitors Bureau was awarded Tourism Office of the Year by the Southeast Tourism Society in 2014. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Kevin about how creativity drives tourism marketing and how being a better collaborator increases your destination’s chances of success. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Kevin’s hospitality journey and how he fell in love with working in tourism How Kevin has invested his creativity to generate unique projects for his various destinations The process of building and troubleshooting a tourist destination and how to properly market for it The challenges of running a visitors bureau and how Kevin has creatively overcome obstacles How collaborations have helped Kevin’s projects come to fruition Tips for finding mutual assets and best practices for being a better collaborator Evolutions Kevin has observed in destination marketing, what his company is doing, and how he thinks the field will continue to change Creativity in Tourism Marketing Kevin Costello is the current President of the Steuben County Conference and Visitors Bureau. Kevin got his start in tourism marketing working at Montauk Point, Long Island, before earning a degree in travel management from Rochester Institute of Technology. He gained experience at resorts in Florida before pursuing his master’s degree in tourism management from the University of Tennessee. Throughout his career, Kevin has occupied tourism positions in unique places, such as Danville, Virginia (AKA the last capital of the Confederacy); Margarita Island in Venezuela (sounds like torture, right?); Disney World; and the Finger Lakes region of New York. Running through it all was Kevin’s creativity, the engine that drove him to start rural Botetourt County’s tourism industry from scratch, create a winery tour, and put together the Upper James River Water Trail. Since working for Steuben County, Kevin has learned the importance of navigating government bureaucracy, mastering tourism fundamentals, and using all available channels to reach tourist audiences. He draws on experiences overhauling Abingdon’s tourism industry by marketing the Creeper Trail without upsetting town traditionalists who loved its main attraction, the Barter Theater. Co-opetition and Creativity Despite his successes, Kevin acknowledges the X factor I always come back to: collaboration, or “co-opetition.” To assemble his upcoming project for the Finger Lakes area, a trail that involves over 200 agrotourism attractions, Kevin is collaborating with professionals in a variety of agricultural industries, including alpaca and cheese. Another collaborative project of Kevin’s, Rooted in Appalachia, saw collaboration with local nonprofits to increase sustainability for local farms. Using farmer’s markets, restaurant tours, websites, and more, Kevin’s team helped to push the farm-to-table philosophy to tourists and supported two different counties of 25 farms. In addition, Kevin’s team assembled a group of chefs to compete in the Cast Iron Cookoff in West Virginia and promote the area. As Kevin demonstrates, tourism marketing is equal parts hard work and fun reward! To be a good collaborator, Kevin stresses how vital communication, brainstorming, commonality, and responsibility are for successful partnerships in the tourism industry. Don’t be afraid to shoulder a heavier or lighter load if your partners have different assets than you do. As long as you continue to pull your weight, invest your creativity, and have a little fun, tourism marketing partnerships will be one of the best decisions you make. If you are having suicidal thoughts, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. I’ve often wished that I could see the private sufferings of the people around me, to behold their secret worries, fears, and pains on a scale of colors. That may sound dismal to some, but it doesn’t to me. I feel that if I could clearly see their pains, then I’d know exactly what ingredients to include in their particular medicinal balm. A caution light—flashing bright red—I’ve imagined what it would be like if people came equipped with such a signal. It would let others know they had reached the edge of what they believe can be tolerated, and that they are considering taking their own life. In reality, seeing the burdens people carry inside takes a more delicate awareness than my color warning fantasy could muster. Knowing what to do when the red light is flashing takes a set of skills that are sorely needed in Calcasieu Parish. In an attempt to understand these skills, I asked the Assistant Professor of Psychology at McNeese State University, Dr. Kevin Yaudes and Director of Student Health & Development at McNeese State University, Ramie Thibodeaux, to share their experiences and knowledge on suicide prevention with me on Find the Good News. Kevin began our talk with a sobering fact—the suicide rate in Calcasieu Parish is 42% higher than the national average, making death by suicide more common in our region compared to other areas of Louisiana. While Kevin and Ramie could not definitively say why there is such a disproportionate amount of suicides in our area, they did share ways that each of us can help. Kevin believes we need to have more open and healthy conversations about suicide, not just among mental health professionals, but in the actual tribes that make up our communities. Suicide is dyed in manifold pain and grief, a subject with deep stains compared to other mental health-related topics. Kevin and Ramie both working passionately to remove the stigmata from the issue of suicide, bringing it out of the shadows and into the light where it can be discussed in healthy and healing ways. The upcoming Out of Darkness walk on September 21, 2019, in Lake Charles, Louisiana is just one of many national events taking place in September that have been created to bring suicide into the public dialogue. The Out of Darkness Walk is designed to bring families, friends, and survivors together in solidarity, understanding, and love while raising funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. As a family member of a suicide survivor, I understand all too well how deep the stigma of suicide stains the fibers of your life. I have experienced the verbal dancing that takes place to avoid talking about suicide openly. As a man that was lead to suicidal thoughts through mind-altering medications, I have seen just how seductive depression can be, and how dark and lonely the hole is. I have been one of the lucky ones twice in my life, and I know that silence is not a solution. I’ve received second and third chances. These have tilled my heart, allowing compassion to bloom for those contemplating suicide. Unlike my colorful imaginings, we can’t see the various tints of pain and despair that lead to suicidal thoughts. As Kevin proposes, we can change the way we talk about suicide, and who we talk about it with. More than that, we can each take steps to cultivate awareness, greater listening skills, loving-kindness, and—most important of all—conscious presence for those exhibiting suicidal signs. ========== FOR MORE INFO ABOUT DR. What is the Problem with Millenials? (Ep.4)

By the year 2020, it's predicted that millennials will comprise around 50% of the workforce. In fact, it's already the case in a number of young companies in the country. SEO Hacker has a team that is composed of 90% millennials. That includes the management team that is all around 30 years old. I have two guests for this episode. The first of which is my wife Apple. She's been working with us for almost a year and has been enjoying handling our primarily millennial team. The other guest is Kevin, my brother and the COO of SEO Hacker. He's been working with me for around seven years and has helped build up the success of our company. For this episode, we'll be discussing mostly about Millennials along with many negative stereotypes that have been directed to them. The first question for the podcast is simple: What is the problem with millennials? A lot of managers believe that their millennial employees have a lot of character flaws, but they don't necessarily know where these came from, or how they were developed. Kevin states that the majority of the problems that we've come through with millennials would come from their reliance on their parents. As a rather pampered millennial himself, Kevin is very familiar with this line of thinking. He also believes that the majority of our team, as well as some probationary teammates that chose not to stay, had this problem. That they are very confident in their abilities, but their actions don't showcase their true capabilities. We have a lot of potential, we have a lot of knowledge available on the Internet, and we have a lot of things we can learn and grow to. Majority of the time, we're not there yet, but we think that we are. And one of the most driving factors for us to develop this mindset is because our parents loved us so much as the way that we are, that we never really tried to excel. We think “good enough” is good enough. Kevin particularly shared that in his past, instead of striving for experience and learning to excel, he always settled with getting a mediocre grade. I'm not trying to fail, and I'm not trying to succeed either. That's been his life. A lot of studies show that Millennials are the way we are because baby boomers and Gen X-ers have groomed us in such a way that we are able to live our dreams, do what we want, and follow our heart. I think that pretty much shaped the millennial generation. That we are the generation that can do whatever we want. This led to some people settling on just being okay and being complacent. This is because they want to live life like they did growing up. Unfortunately, that's not how the world works. Apple pointed out that some parents wanted their dreams to be lived out by their children, the Millennials. Some of them didn't want us to experience the difficult times that they had. The parents of the Millennial generation wanted their children to enjoy the fruits of their labor—which in some cases turned into entitlement. This then translates into the workplace. In order to effectively manage our millennial workforce, we also have to manage our parents. This is something that we've observed over the years of having a 90% millennial workforce. As Kevin stated, we have always considered them in how we process events and how we communicate our messages. We make sure that whenever we provide perks and benefits, we consider what impression it will make to the parents as well. A lot of parents have their hands around the lives of their millennial children. And so, whatever the parents decide will ultimately affect the career of the millennial worker. It's also worth pointing out that there are millennials who have found a way to rise above this influence, and you'll Support the show (https://tribe.leadershipstack.com/)

[8:30] A taste of ecommerce success. [12:00] Experimenting with a private label brand. [14:40] How Scott Voelker helped Kevin take action and quit his day job. How Kevin got started in ecommerce What does it take to get started in the ecommerce marketplace? Kevin was wondering the same thing back in 2004 when he decided to dip his toe in the ecommerce waters. Kevin bought some Nike golf clubs and thought he’d try his hand at reselling them on eBay. He was SO excited to make a quick profit and ride the wave. Unfortunately, Kevin quickly discovered that he was out of his element and had made a substantial miscalculation. It turns out that the Nike golf clubs weren’t selling for much more than he had purchased them for on eBay. This rude awakening was Kevin’s first experience with the ecommerce marketplace, and it would be his last experiment for several years - can you blame him? A taste of ecommerce success Fast-forward a few years in Kevin’s story - he just got his middle management position in the hospitality industry eliminated, and now he’s working at a friend’s insurance agency. He was making ends meet, but he kept noticing that itch to branch out and start something of his own. Deciding to scratch that itch, Kevin, reluctantly began to dip his toe back into the ecommerce waters. He went to his local Walgreens store and purchased a ton of their clearance items and sent them into Amazon to list them for sale (this is known as retail arbitrage). Kevin waited and constantly checked his Amazon account - no movement. Then one day - a bite! He had his first ecommerce sale, and he was HOOKED! Ripping off the band-aid Next, would come the hard part - ripping off the band-aid. As Kevin started to string together a few retail arbitrage sales, his confidence and excitement only grew. Shortly after that initial success, Kevin started experimenting with a private label brand. After some months walking the tight-rope between his ecommerce business and his day job at the insurance agency, Kevin decided to make a bold move and step out on his own - no safety net. As you can imagine, Kevin was terrified! Thankfully, his gambit paid off, and he was able to get his business off of the ground and performing at a comfortable level of success. Kevin’s promise Where does the story leave Kevin today? Right here! You are part of the next chapter in Kevin’s journey. As he continues to expand his ecommerce business, Kevin invites sellers from all walks of life and varying degrees of success to explore the ecommerce marketplace with him. While Amazon is a great place to start - Kevin knows the value of creating assets off of Amazon will lead to long term success and sustainability. His promise to sellers like you is that he’ll show up week after week and deliver the goods. It’s Kevin’s goal to put out weekly, helpful, and useful content. He’ll lean into his skill set and experience (Amazon selling and international marketplaces) where he can, and he’ll bring along subject matter experts to help. Are you in for the journey? Hi friends, Brooke Andrews here. I want to take you back to 2008 to give you a glimpse into the heart and vision of our guest speaker, a friend of mine. In 2008, Kevin Palau, the president of the Luis Palau Association (LPA), reached out to Sam Adams, one of the first openly gay mayors in the United States. Kevin showed up to ask how LPA might come alongside Sam to address critical needs in the community. Although Sam and his administration were skeptical and couldn't quite figure out why "a group of Christians would want to associate themselves with someone with whom they disagreed so vigorously on issues like same-sex marriage and abortion," they agreed to work together because they were both desperate. Kevin describes that, on behalf of the evangelical community in Portland, he was desperate to change the perception of the church in one of the most politically progressive and unchurched cities in the country in order to make progress for the gospel, and he knew he needed to start with relationships. As Kevin and Sam's relationship grew and trust was established, Palau mobilized thousands of churches to get involved with hunger, homelessness, healthcare, the environment, the public school system, foster care, and trafficking in Portland. For Palau, spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ was always the ultimate goal. They wanted to bring the Gospel to life in a tangible way. Kevin said, "What we want is for people who are far from Christ, or who maybe had a bad experience growing up as a kid, wherever they are to say, 'I'm surprised. I didn't realize that these Christians who I viewed a certain way, were the most loving, kind, caring people. They have their convictions. They love to talk about Jesus Christ. Maybe I'm ready for that, or not ready for that, but I can't argue with the fact that they're showing up in the deepest, darkest places of pain and hurt in our city, and they want to make a difference." Under Kevin's leadership, the Luis Palau Association has partnered with tens of thousands of local churches to produce large Christian gatherings in cities around the globe, pioneered a festival model that includes a citywide service initiative preceding the festival event and was designed for long-term sustainability well after the festival, and developed Palau's Next Generation Alliance, which exists to serve up-and-coming evangelists through mentoring and equipping. Editor and journalist Kevin Gosztola joins the show to talk about the jailing of former US Army intelligence analyst and whistleblower Chelsea Manning for her resistance to a grand jury investigating Wikileaks. Kevin has been reporting on Manning’s case from the start in 2010 and has been a tireless advocate. Secret grand juries, and investigations have been used against dissidents and activists for more than a century as a political tactic of repression, isolation, intimidation and harassment. But there is also a long tradition of resistance. As Kevin wrote: “Chelsea Manning is carrying on this tradition through her bold defiance.” In Manning’s own words: “I will not participate in a secret process that I morally object to, particularly one that has been historically used to entrap and persecute activists for protected political speech.” We discuss what little information we have about the secret grand jury and speculate about other factors that might be affecting the timing of the Manning subpoena. We also talk about the wild political flip flops of the Left and the Right on the subject, about Julian Assange and Wikileaks publications before and after the 2016 election. We toss around some ideas on how the Trump-Russia investigation (aka Russiagate) might factor in. Finally we discuss how Manning’s well being and her health related needs, especially given the history, are the most important priorities and foremost in our minds.   Kevin Gosztola is managing editor of Shadowproof. What “Room” Are You In?  Find out The “Room” Where Your Thoughts Reside  to Increase Your Quality of Business Success, Personal Relationships, Happiness & More! Kevin Murphy is a former Wall Street managing director, high school and collegiate wrestling champion, community activist, speaker, coach, and author of the book The Three Rooms. After 33 years at Citigroup in the field of sales, marketing and option trading and becoming an industry luminary in the options field, Kevin felt called to step away from the corporate world to bring forth a book that would draw attention to a concept that became very clear to him during quiet periods of reflection and meditation. He started applying these concepts while dealing with people in business, the youngsters he coached in wrestling, and in his own personal experiences – including how it could impact those being pulled into the opioid and drug epidemic.  The premise behind The Three Rooms is simple, but profound. It explains that our experience of life is not based on what we have or what we do, but rather, it is based on what we think. And our thoughts can only be in one of three places: the past (Past Room), the future (Future Room), or the present (Present Room). Whichever room your thoughts are in determines your experience of life in that moment. Kevin explains how observing which room your thoughts are in, can change your experience of life. The Three Rooms invites you to start the process of better monitoring your thoughts—while providing you the keys to transform your life by doing so. As Kevin notes, those thoughts merely affect our health, our wealth and our relationships.

On this show, I talk to Kevin Oroszlan about this important topic… We dive into discussing how men can thrive in 2019 and what balanced masculine energy combined with feminine energy might resemble. In today’s increasingly more polarized world, this is an important conversation to begin having at-scale from the largest platforms possible. Kevin is a coach who helps men embrace their masculine energy in a fully healthy manner. By embracing our divine masculine energy, we are able to facilitate healing for the collective divine feminine energy that has been so greatly wronged. As Kevin says in this episode "as men, embracing your own feminine energy does not turn you into a woman. Rather, it makes you more of a man". Beautifully said. On this show, we talked about how the suppression of our internal feminine energy has manifested into oppression of women collectively. Just as our own bodies can sometimes demand a rest, demand more creative space, or even manifest diseases or illnesses that force us to finally take a break from our masculine energy, women around the world are standing together and demanding to be recognized. No longer are women standing up for injustices committed against them. Although this drive for equality is certainly to be encouraged, there is a tendency to demonize masculine energy. Almost as a way to get revenge for what has been suffered by the divine feminine, the divine masculine is being criticized and held accountable for sins that it may not have necessarily committed. We are risking a fall into demanding justice for crimes that were not committed by any singular person or organization. It’s been a tough year for NFL officials. The league made some of the most significant rule changes and changes in what they wanted called. Four referees retired, so this is the youngest group of referees in league history. Kevin Seifert from ESPN.com joins us on Schooled with the Professor to judge how officials have done this year. The main debate this offseason was how officials were going to call personal fouls with helmet hits, particularly on quarterbacks. As it turned out, the number of calls for helmet hits haven’t been a much as expected. Instead, roughing the passer penalties have taken the main stage of controversy. Kevin breaks done how those calls have been made. Out of the blue Tuesday, the news from league is it wants to upgrade the punt return roles. As Kevin states, this might be a change not necessarily for safety reasons. Punt returns are the most penalized play in football. The league is even soliciting fan input on how to improve the punt return play. And since Seifert lives in Minneapolis, he also throws in a preview on the Vikings prior to Monday night’s game in Seattle.

Today's special guest, Kevin Murphy, has a powerful new book, called The Three Rooms: Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life  that actually shows you a roadmap to The Present Room, the one where all of that fades away and you can fully blossom into your highest potential, greatest success and a love-filled life. While Eckhart Tolle and others have extolled the value of living in the present moment, many people have found that philosophy a challenge to implement. But the genius of Murphy's new book is how easy and simple he makes it to realize when you are NOT—and how you can shift back into The Present Room. The premise behind The Three Rooms is simple, but profound. It explains that our experience of life is not based on what we have or what we do, but rather, it is based on what we think, and our thoughts can only be in one of three places: the past (Past Room), the future (Future Room), or the present (Present Room), and whichever room your thoughts are in determines your experience of life in that moment. Live in the now. Be present. Don't borrow worry from tomorrow. Don't dwell in the past. We've heard those phrases over and over for most of our lives. Easy to say . Not so easy to always do. Our reactions to the way ideas are presented can vary by who we hear them from and even when we hear them. When Kevin Murphy was introduced to me and I read his book I knew I had to have him on the show. He presents a unique way to look at something we have all heard before that I hope can help. During the show Kevin shares how you can observe your thoughts, the three rooms, what questions to ask to know what room you are in, is it ever ok to visit the past or future how stress is based on the room you are in and more. If you want to stay in the present more, take a listen. Kevin Murphy is a former Wall Street managing director for Citigroup, high school and collegiate wrestling champion, community activist, speaker, coach, and author of the book The Three Rooms. Pika in a time of Climate Change The Rocky Mountains are known around the world as a great place to spot wildlife.  Although most visitors to the area are looking for iconic animals like elk, bighorn sheep and bears, some of our tinier residents can be equally exciting. One of the more fascinating alpine animals is the pika.  If you’ve never seen a pika —relax, you’re not alone.  I remember my first sighting.  I was nearing the summit of Nigel Pass in Banff Park, when all of a sudden I started hearing some strange sounds.  They could only be described as a sort of bleating ‘Eeenk’. I would have quickly discounted them as a ground squirrel or marmot had they not come from the middle of a large, seemingly lifeless rock slide.  Somewhere within this maze of boulders was an invisible animal. The problem was only compounded when I moved in for a closer look.  That single ‘Eeenk’ suddenly became several —I was surrounded.  I assured myself that I wasn't going crazy and became determined to discover the maker of these strange noises. As I watched and listened, I was astounded at how the sound of a single call seemed to come from all directions—almost like a ventriloquist throwing his voice.  This must work very well to confuse predators; after all, it confused me.  After about ten minutes, I resigned to the fact that I wasn’t going to find my strange beast. I struggled on with my pack and was about to continue down the trail when a flash of movement caught my eye.  About thirty metres away was a small gray animal.  It resembled a guinea pig and blended in so well with the limestone that I almost lost it in the rocks.  Out came the binoculars for a closer look.   It was hunched on a rock and I could see that it was about 20 cm long with short rounded ears and no visible tail. When I finally returned home to my field guides, I flipped through the pages until, right after the rabbits, I found him.  He was a pika and was part of the order Lagomorpha.  This meant that they weren’t rodents, as I had suspected, but were more closely related to the snowshoe hare (who is also a member of this group). Unlike most other small members of the alpine community, the pika does not hibernate. It spends most of the summer months collecting plants and building large hay piles (some of which may be as large as a bushel) and leaving them to season, much like a farmer leaving out his bales.  It will be these stores that will get it through the eight or nine months of winter. Often, it must leave the security of its rock or talus slope in order to collect these plants.  Recognizing its vulnerability, it spends as little time in the meadow as possible.  Quickly gathering plants, it places them cross-ways in its mouth and returns to the talus. Being related to hares and rabbits makes the pika a hindgut fermenter. Like all herbivores, the digestion of cellulose is done by bacteria in the gut. Unlike animals like elk, moose, and deer, which sport a four-chambered digestive system means that the fermentation process takes place prior to reaching the actual stomach. This also means that they need to essentially cough up their partly digested meals and re-chew them to help further break them down and allow for additional digestion. Unfortunately for animals like snowshoe hares and pikas, the fermentation process takes place beyond the stomach, in the Cecum. They will also have an intestinal tract that can be up to 13 times the length of their body. Once the food passes through the stomach, the fermentation takes place in the cecum and the large intestine before being coated with mucus and being excreted. These are referred to as cecotropes and are eaten again to allow the food to pass through the digestive system a second time to absorb additional nutrients. After this second passing, so to speak, they produce the hard pellets that we would normally associate with animals like rabbits, hares, and pikas. Regardless of which system vegetarians have to deal with, for me, I'm just happy to be a carnivore and not need to chew my cud or my - you know what. Cellulose be damned - give me a juicy steak! Pikas are very carefully tied to the environmental conditions in their homes. They have a fairly high body temperature (around 40 C) and a rise of just a few degrees can be fatal.  This narrow range forces them to live in cooler areas, usually at elevations above 2000 metres. The prospect of warming climates and changing weather patterns are likely to have some very detrimental impacts on animals like the pika. In fact, research done in the Yukon in 2011 by Dr. David Hik of the University of Alberta looked at populations of collared pika in Kluane National Park, in the Yukon. The collared pika is closely related to the American pika that is so common through the Canadian Rockies and has been experiencing some of these climate-related challenges. The fact that pikas don't hibernate means that they rely on several things to make it through the winter, as well as to have reproductive successes. Believe it or not, they need good snowpacks. Snow is a blanket. It never gets cold beneath the snow. If you doubt this, just ask anyone who has spent a night in an igloo or snow cave. For pikas, warm winters with little snowpack mean population declines. The cold is able to penetrate into their subnivean or under the snow world leading to population declines. In the Alberta Rockies, another study done by the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute in 2014 found that the American pika was the second most vulnerable animal. Pika live on mountaintops. This means that their homes are isolated from populations on adjacent mountaintops. They can't simply migrate into new habitats when the conditions in their home range change in such a way that it's no longer suitable. As an example, if you think about Lake Louise. Pika found around Lake Agnes cannot simply get to Mount Fairview, even though it is just on the other side of Lake Louise. To do so would involve a long migration into low elevation habitats prior to making their way up to the alpine zone of Mount Fairview. Pika live in the alpine because they cannot tolerate the warmer temperatures in the lower, warmer subalpine. Pikas are limited to survive in the habitats they have…as the saying goes: "there's no place like home". Unfortunately for them, it's also the only place that's home.  They may be able to see a new potential home, but they won't be able to get there. Despite this, a report by Chris Shank entitled: Understanding and Respecting the Effects of Climate Change on Alberta’s Biodiversity indicated that they may not be at risk in the near future, at least in Alberta. This belief comes with many conditions, unfortunately, some of them requiring a reduction in greenhouse gases. With the current environmental situation south of our border, as well as Canada's slow pace of change, this seems unlikely to occur. It also assumes that snowpacks continue to be sufficient to support strong pika populations, that meadow plant populations remain consistent, those summer temperatures remain cool enough, and that loose rock, or talus slopes, that the pika call home also remains constant. With warming climates, the forests of the subalpine are beginning to migrate upwards into the alpine. The alpine is a finite habitat. Eventually, you run out of mountain. As long as meadows migrate upwards along with forests, and snow packs migrate uphill as well, and so on, our pikas may be able to stick around. While pikas are on the frying pan locally, they are slipping into the fire in more southerly populations. The further south you go, climate changes are resulting in the two things that make it difficult for pikas to survive - reduced snowpacks and an upward migration of the subalpine. If you travel south to California's Sierra Nevada mountains, pikas have completely disappeared from a 425 km2 portion of their range. Currently, this is the largest area of local extinction or extirpation, so far recorded. In California, the problem has been warmer summer temperatures, resulting in these very heat sensitive pikas overheating. When it's too hot, the pikas seek the shade. When they are in the shade, they're not collecting plants to add to their winter larder. While pika do still exist in areas adjacent to this study, forecasts predict a drop of 97% in pika numbers around Lake Tahoe by 2050. There is one light at the end of this very dark tunnel. For pika, there are very few options in a world of warming climates and reduced snow packs: move, adapt, acclimate, or die! In a recent study in Frontiers of Ecology and the Environment, biologists looked at over 200 studies looking into how amphibians, birds, fish, invertebrates, mammals, and reptiles responded to warming climates. Behavioural responses can occur in much shorter time spans then physiological ones. According to this study, some individual pika populations have managed to adapt to changes by varying their foraging habits, calling new environments home, and finding novel ways to prevent overheating. Pika are found over a huge territory, but individuals don’t tent do move more than a kilometre from the rock pile that they were born. Lack of movement means that individual populations remain isolated from each other, meaning each population may adopt different strategies to dealing with warming temperatures. Some have sought out new micro-environments, taking advantage of deadfall logs, logging debris and forests. If the location is cool enough in the summer, and the snowpack deep enough, they may be able to survive. Some isolated populations in the Columbia River Gorge have managed to obtain as much as 63% of their calories from mosses, which are plentiful both winter and summer. This allows them to be less rigorous in terms of building haypiles during the summer months. Behavioural flexibility may be the catchword for the 21st century. If plants, animals, and birds cannot adapt physiologically to the rapid changes in their ranges then behavioural adaptation is their only option. At least a few populations of pika are taking the challenge and beating the odds. I don't ever want to find myself wandering the loose rock talus slopes of the mountains in summer and not be challenged to find these most perfectly camouflaged critters. Ancient Aspirin I spend a lot of time showing visitors to the mountains signs of animals recorded in the landscape and plant life. Most animals are not designed to be seen. They're designed to blend into the mountain landscape and so, to untrained eyes, they often remain invisible. One thing they can't hide though is the signs that they leave behind. This may be tracks, scats, bits of hair, or even signs of feeding. If you take a look at any trembling aspen tree in the central Rockies and you'll notice that the lower portions of the trunk are heavily scarred. This is due to the fact that the scarring represents mouth level for an elk standing on snow. During the lean winter months, aspen bark is a famine food for elk and they'll peel strips of bark off the lower portions of the trunk. If you look higher up the trunk, you may get a surprise. Sometimes you can find additional marks ascending the trunk, and upon closer inspection, you may find claw marks from a black bear or two that climbed the tree in previous years. Aspen and poplar bark is very easily scarred. Once a bear climbs the tree, the tree will bear the scars for the rest of its life. Once you find a bear-climbed aspen, you'll take special notice as you wander the mountain landscapes looking for additional trees with similar scars. Looking for animal signs helps to make us more aware of the wildlife that is around us but often hidden from view. Our first nations also used the bark of the aspen tree. They would use the inner bark as a medicine, and they would take that for everything from headaches to tummy aches. When we non-natives arrived on the landscape, we scoffed at their heathen witch doctor medicine - heck, they didn't even know what it was good for. They took it for everything. Well today we know that the bark of aspen trees, and its relatives in the willow family, contain a chemical called Salicylic Acid. To us non- natives, we refer to this chemical as aspirin. They were taking it long before we ever rediscovered its medical magic. Modern aspirin can be traced back to Edward Stone, an 18th-century clergyman who wrote that a powdered mixture of willow bark helped 50 patients with malaria-like diseases as well as other illnesses. The modern aspirin we use can be traced back to 1899 when Felix Hoffmann, a chemist at Bayer in Germany used acetylsalicylic acid to help treat his father's rheumatism. I've been telling my guests that first nations have used it for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years before modern medicine caught on. Willow bark was taken by ancient Egyptians to treat aches and pains and even the great Greek physician Hippocrates mentioned its use. Well a new study takes its use way back, and I mean waaaaaaay back - to several Neanderthal skeletons dated from between 42,000 and 50,000 years ago. As it turns out, Neanderthals didn't have great dental hygiene. For archaeologists, this has always been good news. In time, plaque accumulating on teeth will harden into something called calculus, a hard surface made up of minerals and the remains of bacteria along with other microorganisms. Calculus can accumulate, layer upon layer, offering a time capsule of Neanderthal diets. Previous studies of Neanderthal teeth showed that humans and Neanderthals interbred. They also showed that localized populations dined on dramatically different menus. Some were Ward friendly with a high meat diet including animals like reindeer, woolly mammoths, and woolly rhinoceros, while others dined at restaurants that I would never frequent - offering a mostly plant-based menu. Recently a group of scientists analyzed the DNA in the calculus of four European Neanderthals. Two were from Belgium, and two from Spain. They varied in age from 42,000 to 50,000 years old. The tests confirmed that the Belgian Neanderthal was my kind of caveman - dining mostly on woolly rhinoceros, wild sheep, and wild mushrooms. The Spanish Neanderthal were more vegan, eating primarily pine nuts, moss, mushrooms and tree bark. The most interesting result came from one of the skulls from El Sidrón cave in Spain. His teeth showed that he had signs of salicylic acid. Now, this was one sickly Neanderthal. He had dental abscesses and DNA analysis showed that he would have suffered from severe diarrhea from intestinal parasites. If he only had something stronger, like penicillin! This miracle drug was only discovered accidentally in September of 1928 by Dr. Alexander Fleming. After returning from vacation he encountered a messy lab and the mold Penicillium notatum had contaminated some of his Petri dishes. While the rest is history, it's the prehistory that is fascinating in terms of this story. This same 48,000-year-old Neanderthal had traces of Penicillium mold. This means that hominids that predate humans were taking versions of Penicillin at least 48,000 years ago, and likely much longer. This story is a combination of daily guiding meeting podcast curiosity. It's common knowledge in local guiding literature that our First Nations used aspen bark as medicine. However, had I not started this podcast, I wouldn't have been on the constant quest for new scientific studies to share with listeners like you. Aspirin and Penicillin are usually considered "modern" medicines, but this one skull from a cave in Spain has helped us to realize that everything new is old again! Mining our Rivers Way back in episode 15, I talked about the importance of gravel-bed rivers in the Canadian Rockies. You can listen to the episode at mountainnaturepodcast.com/ep015. It's a really cool story and it's worth checking out the show notes or taking a listen prior to continuing this episode if you'd like to get the background material. Recent studies by Dr. Richard Hauer, a professor at the University of Montana, have focused on the unique ecology of gravel-bed rivers in the Rocky Mountains. Hauer recognized that streams in mountain valleys are NOT limited to the narrow channel at the bottom of wide U-shaped glacial valleys. In fact, the actual channel of the river extends from valley bottom to valley bottom, with water percolating across the valley through the gravels. Over millennia, the river has been moving back and forth across its valley, eroding here and depositing sediments there, but never staying the same. If you could take an x-ray of the valley bottom, you would see a mosaic of sediments including cobbles, gravels, and finer sediments. Above ground, the valley shows various levels of succession with flowing channels, ponds, old and new channels, dry gravel beds and vegetation varying from mountain avens flowers to old-growth spruce. Water though, does not see these boundaries, and flows from one side of the valley to the other, quietly flowing between the cobbles and other sediments, allowing for an entire ecosystem of aquatic life to persist far away from today's river channel. The mountain ecology around us has been built by 10,000 or more years of rivers changing, migrating, eroding and depositing. It's this change that is the dynamic lifeblood of the river valley ecosystem Now what might happen if you decide to mine that gravel-bed river? If we accept that a gravel-bed river IS really an entire valley and not just a river, then the consequences of disrupting any part of that ecosystem can be significant. In a story in Alberta Views Magazine, former Banff Park Superintendent Kevin Van Tighem talks about a well drilled a kilometre away from the Flathead River in Montana. It wasn't surprising that it produced beautifully clean water, but what was surprising was that it also produced stoneflies. These aquatic insects are found in fast-flowing mountain streams, but they were not expected this far from the river. Well as Dr. Hauer has shown, rivers are not a channel, but a valley-wide ecosystem. The stoneflies lived in the gravels, a long way from the active channel. So let's take a more detailed look at the Bow River Valley as an example. The Bow River occupies just a narrow ribbon in the centre of the valley. On either side, the valley stretches from Silvertip to Quarry Lake. Is the river just the river? Not at all. The river is the valley. Anything we do to the gravels of the valley will affect the river itself. In fact, there's far more water in the gravel then there is in the river channel. Just because it looks like land, it doesn't mean that it IS land. Unfortunately, in Alberta, gravel is a commodity. As far as industry is concerned, gravel is known as "aggregate" and it is a hugely valuable commodity. Gravel mining companies employ lobbyists who extol the benefits of cheap gravel to ill-informed politicians, who look at campaign donations, and, well you get the story. According to Van Tieghen's article, prior to 2011, Alberta regulators rarely approved gravel mines on floodplains, however the provincial Conservatives approved the Alberta Surface Water Body Aggregate Policy in January of 2011. This new policy signaled open season on gravel pit mining in the province. The floods of 2013 really helped to bring the folly of gravel pit mining to the forefront. Water flows, it's unrelenting and continuous. Add additional flow to the channel, and water will also percolate throughout the entire gravel river ecosystem. Three common problems that gravel-river mines cause include depletion of aquifers, losses to the fishery, and in particular, "pit capture". If you dig a gravel pit near to a gravel river channel, the river will tend to be drawn towards the gravel pit with the potential of essentially 'capturing' the pit. This can end up cutting a new channel causing unexpected erosion, destruction of property, and the loss of fish stocks. Essentially, if you build it, it may come! You can see how inchannel gravel mining ant pit capture works. At one mine on the North Saskatchewan River, operated by Mixcor, a company whose website boasts of "a history of caring", their Dahm gravel pit on the North Saskatchewan River was inundated during the 2013 floods. This flood was fast and relentless, just as it was through the Bow River Valley. As the groundwater inundated the mine, followed by the surface water until the entire river course was drawn towards the mine. Very quickly, mine machinery was buried and toxins from the mine began to leach into the 'new' river channel. Along with the toxins, the excessive sediment drowned spawning beds and damage the gills of adult fish. Fish stocks declined by up to 50% from this one case of pit capture. Keith Rae, the owner of Get Hooked Fishing Adventures carefully documents his companies catch rates. Before the flood, he recorded 2,851 catches, but after the flood, he only recorded 1,197. In 2014, it was even worse with only 1,305. Upstream from the pit capture, the numbers remained consistent. As Van Tighen relates in his story, glaciers were great purveyors of gravel, distributing vast amounts in areas far from gravel-bed rivers. The problem is that it is more expensive to mine. As Kevin states: "Glaciers left lots of upland gravel in Alberta. There is no need to steal it from our rivers. The only reason mining river floodplains is profitable is because gravel operators don’t pay for the dead fish, depleted water wells, diverted river channels and downstream siltation. We do." So far the provinces NDP government has not moved to change the regulations. Alberta is glacier country. It's full of gravel. Let's just start to take it from areas outside of these underground channels. That's what we used to do prior to 2011. Water is the issue of the 21st century. Scientists like Dr. Hauer are helping us to better understand the delicate ecosystems that we call home. What does your ideal client look like? Patrick McGloughlin helps accountancy practices answer that exact question. He has been helping accountancy practices attract their ideal clients for 19 years. His business is Accounting for Growth is based in Loughborough in Leicestershire. He specialises in marketing for accountants in public practice. What he has to share with us is relevant not just to accountants but any professional services firm. There's a customer persona help sheet to go with todays show, you can download it at http://thenext100days.org/90download Why marketing for accountants? As Kevin describes, accountants don't have a marketing bone in their body! They used to be restricted in their advertising. They were allowed a brass plaque outside their office. 20 years ago, the rules for professional practices were changing. Patrick had just taken on a new client, an accountancy firm. The opportunities were enormous. Over 6 months he stopped working with media clients and concentrated on accountants. Marketing for accountants quickly became Patrick's entire business Patrick McGloughlin from Accounting For Growth What was their main problem? Differentiation. The basic sales and presentational skills. Large proposal, burying the fee deep into the report! It used to be that the client had to comply with the accountant's structure. Now, it is the accountants that are focusing on clients. How to start working with accountants? The first question is “Who is your ideal client?”. If you are going to take on a new client, they may as well be a good one. Even today, when Patrick coaches, the accountants, when asked to list their unique strengths, what is special about them, it tends to be the same list of attributes: We are proactive We are client focused Especially emphasise that we really care about the client We work with big and small businesses They are generalising RATHER than focusing in on the clients they can help. The first thing is to work out WHO gets best value from working with you? Who's lives have you changed? Tell us about the work you are most proud of. Patrick tries to get them passionate! They are, but the day to day work takes over and we can lose touch with those special moments! Should they be talking about their expertise in specific sectors? Yes. If you understand clients in my industry, the conversation is more advanced. You can evidence it. Then you can bring up excellent case studies. Next, you can show me the difference you can make. That can be a key area. Niches. The outcomes that accountants bring about for their clients For example, a client who helped a business owner who was struggling to get a VAT rebate. They were in danger of closing before they had even opened up. The difference the accountant made, getting the rebate back in a week, then he graded each customers and the product base and ensured the client marketed the higher value products. The market is changing Work is commoditising. Accountants need to remain relevant. They must play a role in improving profitability and improving cash flow. By ultimately improving the lives of business owners. As opposed to just keeping them compliant. So, accountant should move from compliance – that's a given, to knowing what keeps their clients awake at night. Have accountants become marketers? Patrick thinks so. Traditionally, an accountant slams down a set of accounts, hands you the bill and you see him in 12 months' time. There is no real value. It's a necessary evil. The more focused the analysis is from accountants, the more you can highlight opportunities. Accountants must help not just with the data, but with the interpretation of that data. They'll help you make better decisions. Which is going to increase your margins. And you'll have a better business. For many business owners, the figures in the accounts mean so little to them.

We welcome actor, director, audiobook narrator, and author Kevin Theis back to Booth One to talk about his new book, Invading Nirvana, A Chicagoan in the City of Angels. This hilarious and informative book serves as a blueprint for any actor considering moving to L.A. to try to get work in show business. It's available at bookstores or on Amazon. Kevin has also narrated the audiobook. Longtime Chicago critic and theatre professor Albert Williams has this to say about it: "A smart, witty, but also incisive and candid chronicle of Theis's experiences and observations as a Chicago actor who decided to head west to crash the TV, film, and surprisingly lucrative audiobooks markets." In this book, Kevin explores every aspect of the entertainment industry, including stand-up comedy. Treating the project like a journalism assignment about what it's like to live there, he also talks about other L.A. weirdness, such as the pervasiveness of Scientologists and cannabis. Check out this site to see the big blue Scientology Center and one of the videos Kevin saw in person. Kevin has a book signing on October 20 at City Lit Books and on October 24 at the Den Theatre. Gary and Kevin have just seen The Rembrandt at Steppenwolf, starring John Mahoney and Francis Guinan. They, along with their 3 supporting actors, are sensational. As Kevin says, go to this show to see "two pros get up on stage with the right material and the right director and just knock it out of the park!" In his "Good Times & Bum Times" segment, Gary recounts two amazing tales of woe and good fortune. The bum times is particularly astonishing. Gary has recently done an audio book narration workshop with Kevin, which was a lot of fun. Kevin will come to your home to do the workshop! Go to this site if you'd like to sign up. Our producer gave Gary a shark picture book as a "present." It includes graphic photos and "danger ratings", along with proof that at least one 5 star danger-rated shark can live in fresh water. Good to have your phobias validated. Kevin announces a new project he is doing at Oak Park Festival Theatre. A world premiere play called "A Dickens Carol" by Ned Crowley. The premise is that A Christmas Carol is based on actual events from Dickens' life. Opens November 26. Speaking of A Christmas Carol, this will be the  40th anniversary of Chicago's Goodman Theatre production. Kevin enjoyed being part of that cast for seven years. Kiss of Death: Celebrate the life of magician Eugene Burger. What a story. A master of close-up illusions and mentor to many at the The Magic Castle. Gary has been lucky enough to get invited in the past and recalls it as one of the great experiences of his life.

This is Season 2, Episode 22 of the Small Scale Life Podcast, and today we are going to check back in and provide a healthy lifestyle progress report. I will be summarizing my work and progress, celebrating the wins and adjusting the plan to address the failures. I am not striving for perfection. After all, I am trying to move from a zero to a two, and then from a two to a four….all on my way to becoming an eight out of ten! Before we begin.... In case you are new to Small Scale Life, we are dedicated to intentional living through learning, doing and growing. We are focused on: • Gardening, • Healthy living, and • Having adventures along the way. Focus Areas and the Plan In Season 2, Episode 20 of the Small Scale Life Podcast, I discussed my four point plan for getting on track with developing a healthy lifestyle. The four main points of the plan are the following: Eating Real Food for every meal with emphasis on planning and preparation Getting great sleep every night with focusing on budgeting and using time wisely Getting mentally strong by journaling and podcasting Working out regularly I thought I would circle back in this episode and give you an update on how things are going. After all, it is all fine and good to talk about these things, but it helps to document the work and progress, celebrate the wins and adjust to address the failures. Let’s get into each point and go through them one-by-one and as part of this healthy lifestyle progress report. Eating Real Food for Every Meal -> Planning and Preparation • I am going to achieve this is by planning and preparing breakfast and lunch ahead of time. • For dinner, I will need to choose the right foods and eat enough to last until morning. This is one area that I need to continue to focus on moving forward. We did a great job planning dinners, but I need to work on breakfast and lunch. I think I was taking on a lot with my goals, so I am going to dial it back a bit. I am going to focus on lunch and reboot that meal. Breakfast at times gets sketchy (meaning sometimes I don’t eat at breakfast), but I do eat lunch most days. I am really going to focus on eating real food at lunch and cutting out any snacks. I am going to reread the Rebooted Body information on eating Real Food, and I am going to focus on lunches for the next week. Once I have that under control, I will work on other meals. My action item going forward is rereading the Rebooted Body information on eating Real Food, and I focusing on eat real food at lunches for the next week. Getting Great Sleep Every Night -> Budgeting and Using Time Wisely I have been keeping track of my sleep during the Rebooted Body Walk Challenge. Looking at the data, I have been getting a little over 7.5 hours of sleep per night. It helps when you have a device monitoring your sleep and the quality of sleep. I need to continue getting over 7 hours of quality sleep each night, and I need to get to bed earlier so I can get workouts completed before work. That is the sweet spot because: • We are usually too tired after a long day at work to workout • Our lives get busy after work and nights seem to get short • Days are getting shorter and it is getting dark earlier If I can adjust my schedule, I can get the workouts done early and have the evening to complete other tasks or hang out with my family and friends without guilt or regrets. My Sleep Action Item is going to bed earlier, getting up earlier and getting an average of 7 hours of sleep per night. Getting Mentally Strong ->Journaling and Podcasting I like listening to podcasts and audio books. I find it is a great way to get a lot of good information while I travel around for my job or do other projects like walking, canning or gardening. That said, there were a couple of podcasts that I was listening to that weren’t that great for various reasons, and I have gone ahead and dropped them. They were just adding to the noise. Instead, I have been using my Audible subscription to listen to a book by Greg McKeown called “Essentialism.” It is over six hours, and I am trying to really listen closely to this one and take some notes. I would like to complete a review of this one once I am complete. Also part of getting mentally strong was journaling. In the past, I found that it helps to write something daily because it helped me focus and write what I am thinking and feeling. Over the past week, I just didn’t start writing, so I need to get going on that this week My action item for this week is that I will journal 5 times over the next week. Working Out Regularly - >Planning, Developing Stronger Whys and Choosing to do the Work Over the past 11 days, I have been participating in the Rebooted Body 14-Day Walk Challenge. There were three categories for the Walk Challenge: • 1-mile per day • 3-miles per day • 5-miles per day I have been having some knee pain, so I decided to choose the 1-mile per day category. I figured if I could get at least a mile done a day, I would be doing better than I was now. Plus, I figured I could get some momentum as the weather is getting colder (winter is coming) and the snow will keep us indoors for six months. I have tried to walk every day, and I used Map My Walk on my iPhone to track my mileage and my times. If you have been watching the Small Scale Life Instagram account or Small Scale Life Facebook page, you have seen my healthy lifestyle progress report. Stacking it all up, you can see some real progress: • Day 1 – 2.6 miles; 50 minutes, 38 seconds (9/15/17) • Day 2 – 1.3 miles; 20 minutes, 14 seconds (9/16/17) • Day 3 – 1 mile; 19 minutes, 9 seconds (9/17/17) • Day 4 – 2.6 miles; 49 minutes, 5 seconds (9/18/17) • Day 5 – 2.6 miles; 52 minutes, 18 seconds (9/19/17) • Day 6 – 3 miles; 63 minutes, 9 seconds (9/20/17) • Day 7 – Rest (9/21/17) • Day 8 – Rest (9/22/17) • Day 9 - 1 mile; 21 minutes, 22 seconds (9/23/17) • Day 10 – 2.2 miles; 41 minutes, 8 seconds (9/24/17) • Day 11 – 3 miles; 60 minutes (9/25/17) • Day 12 – 1 mile; 21 minutes, 57 seconds (9/26/17) • Day 13 - Presentations on my feet for 3 hours • Day 14 - Rail Safety Station Blitz - on my feet for 4 hours Total mileage to date: 20.3 miles Walking over 20 miles in 12 days is a pretty cool stat! In addition, I was looking at the historical workout information, and I have improved my walk times. On 9/11/17, I logged 2.6 miles in 55 minutes, 17 seconds. So, even though I have been having a lot of knee pain due to arthritis, my time per mile has decreased over the past 12 days. The Walk Challenge has been good for me to get some momentum and get moving again, even with some significant knee pain. The challenge will end on Friday. After the Walk Challenge is complete, I want to get back into the pool and start swimming laps. This will be easier on my joints while I get a great full body workout. I will also try to get some biking in as well. My action item this week is to keep moving by getting on bikes or getting in the pool and swimming laps for at least 5 days next week. Going Forward - Healthy Lifestyle Progress Report In summary, I am going to be completing the following Action Items over the next week and providing another healthy lifestyle progress report: My Eating Action Item going forward is rereading the Rebooted Body information on eating Real Food, and I focusing on eat real food at lunches for the next week. My Sleep Action Item is going to bed earlier, getting up earlier and getting an average of 7 hours of sleep per night. My Mind Action Item for this week is that I will journal 5 times over the next week. My Movement Action Item this week is to keep moving by getting on bikes or getting in the pool and swimming laps for at least 5 days next week. The bottom line is that I have made some progress on the four parts of the plan, but I am not perfect. In fact, PERFECTION is not the goal. PERFECTION is actually the enemy. When we strive to be perfect, we are setting ourselves up for frustration and failure. Kevin Michael Geary talks a lot about perfectionism at Rebooted Body, and this is a topic for a future podcast! I guess we’ll have to wait for that one. How is that for a podcast tease? The bottom line is that I want to thank Kevin Michael Geary and Zack Franke at Rebooted Body for organizing and facilitating the 14-Day Walk Challenge. Even though my knee has been pretty sore, this has been a great way to get momentum towards developing the healthy lifestyle. The key now is to keep that momentum going and actually do the work. As Kevin said so eloquently in a livestream to the Walk Challenge Facebook Group: [tweetthis]“The only thing that will change your life is execution.” – Kevin Michael Geary[/tweetthis] We can learn and read and think all we want, but it really does come down to execution. We need use that knowledge and do the work. We need to get our offense on the field and execute! I hope this podcast and healthy lifestyle progress report will inspire you to eat real food, move every day and get better sleep. I hope you will be inspired to do a little bit each day and go for the long haul. I hope you will join me on our journey for a healthier life. The road ahead is not easy (if it was easy, everyone would do it), but we need to start with a single step. Put enough of those steps together, and we will start to get some momentum. Did I think I would walk over 20 miles in two weeks? No, I did not, especially with a sore knee. Guess what? I did it, and I will keep going. Why not join me? I will do some thinking about where we go from here. Maybe we run a fitness challenge this fall to help keep everyone motivated. Maybe we run micro-challenges. I’ll have to think about it a bit and talk to folks in the Small Scale Life Facebook Group. If you want to provide some input into what comes next, join the conversation there. Remember: you are stronger when you work with a team and a group, so you should join us in the Small Scale Life Facebook Group. This is where we will end the healthy lifestyle progress report this week. Whether you're selling your house or not, the lawn and landscaping play a huge role in your home's curb appeal. Search all homes for saleYour yard makes up a big part of your home's exterior appeal whether you're selling or not, so it's important to keep it beautiful. To help me give some tips on the best ways to do this, I've invited Kevin McSherry of From the Ground Up Landscapes to join me today. When you are selling your home, the yard always creates that valuable first impression on buyers. For some, it will even determine whether they want to see it after driving by. As Kevin says, start with the obvious staples and make sure your lawn is mowed and trimmed on a regular basis while your house is for sale. If you have mulch, apply a brand new layer to make it look fresh and get rid of all weeds in landscape beds. Trim any plants as well.Perennial flowers are becoming more popular than annuals that have to be planted each year. Most of the work that Kevin and his team do is taking out older landscaping and starting fresh. It's easier and less expensive for homeowners than starting from scratch. One of the most popular things they do is planting permanent flowers for homeowners who are sick of planting annuals every year. They can even space out planting these perennials through the seasons so that something is always in bloom. They also specialize in low-maintenance landscaping. Kevin says his team does more and more stone instead of mulch because homeowners grow tired of adding new mulch every year.If you have any questions for Kevin about lawn maintenance, you need some tips, or you're looking to update your landscaping, you can reach Kevin at 217-233-1310 or check out his website at FTGULandscapes.com. As always, feel free to give me a call or send me an email if you have any questions about the Central Illinois real estate market or you're thinking of buying or selling a home. In this teaching Kevin Diaz expounds on the some of the details of the tabernacle in the 2nd half of the book of Exodus. God wanted to dwell with His people but how could a holy God dwell among a sinful people? God made provision for that to occur through the tabernacle but there was still something greater that the tabernacle & the sacrificial system pointed to, namely Christ. As Kevin metioned in this teaching, Christ is the fulfillment of the sacrifcial system that God set up with the Israelites. Christ the sinless lamb of God has been sacrificed for our sins so that we can now appoach God with confidence into the holiest place of His presence.

Stephen is the CEO of Predictive ROI and the host of the Onward Nation podcast. He is the author of two bestselling books, speaker, trainer, and his digital marketing insights have been featured in SUCCESS, Entrepreneur, The Washington Post, Forbes, Inc. Magazine, and other media. Good Morning Onward Nation…I’m Stephen Woessner. And I am really really excited for today’s solocast because — it is going to be rock solid awesome! One of the reasons that I am so excited is because I am returning to full teaching mode this morning with a powerful lesson about building your platform — more importantly — some practical and tactical steps about building a nation of what Kevin Kelly describes as “True Fans” who will help you mobilize and move your business onward to that next level. True fans of you — true fans of your message — true fans of your business. Fans who will support you — because — of the sacred bond you have built with them. A bond that was built upon — and continues to be built upon — the foundation of the value you created, you delivered, and the value you shared with them on a consistent basis. Whether you do that every day — every week — no matter what the schedule — no matter what the rhythm — the fact that you are consistent is what is important. This is going to be such an awesome solocast — and I am delighted you are here with me — your time and attention mean so very much to me. But before we dive deep into today’s lesson…I have a very important favor to ask. In fact, this is the first time I have ever asked this favor within one of my solocasts. So, if you could do this — please know — it would mean a lot to me. I’d be grateful — and would really appreciate it — if you would go to iTunes and give Onward Nation a rating and then write a review for our podcast. I respect your time so I wanted to make this as efficient as possible to find us in iTunes…so my team created a special link to save you time. So if you go to www.onwardnation.com/itc you will go directly to our channel within iTunes. Okay, why am I asking for this favor? Last week, I was excited to share with you how Onward Nation is now listened to in 102 countries — and — that we had surpassed the milestone of 50,000 downloads. WOW — still a bit unbelievable — not going to lie — need to pinch myself to realize that yes, this is indeed our reality. And I credited our growth to our incredible guests and all of the wonderful feedback we have received from you, Onward Nation — all of your comments on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, — and — all of your emails. Thank you! But in celebrating these amazing milestones — I made a mistake! I forgot to mention a critical type of feedback that helps us reach more and more people with each one we receive…and that’s…all of the ratings and reviews we receive inside iTunes. With each rating and review we receive, Onward Nation…you help us increase our rankings within iTunes — and — higher rankings means more people will see us in their search results — and potentially they will be seeing us for the very first time. Each and every review helps more and more people in more countries to hear the wisdom and expertise shared by our guests each day. So, if you haven’t already given us a star rating and written a review — it would really mean a lot to me if you did. It’s simple to do. It doesn’t take much time. Again, just go to www.onwardnation.com/itc — or — if you are listening on your phone — you can give us a rating and write a review from within your podcast app on your phone. We’ve occasionally received feedback that leaving ratings can be a confusing process, so here are the steps in detail: First, after going to the www.onwardnation.com/itc link, please click the blue button that “View in iTunes.” Next, click on the link titled “Ratings and Reviews.” Next, click on “Write a Review.” If you are not signed into iTunes, you will be asked to sign in. If you are already signed into iTunes, it is likely that you will skip this step. Finally, you will be able to leave a review. Don’t forget the star rating! So thank you, Onward Nation — and please know — I greatly appreciate all of your help, support, encouragement, and feedback — you make me and my team better every day — and — it is an honor to be here with you again this morning. With that said…let’s get dialed in and ready for this week’s lesson. You ready? Because I’m so totally ready — I’m going to bring the thunder this morning, Onward Nation…YES! I spent quite a bit of time working through and preparing what I wanted to share with you today. Such an important lesson. How one of the vital priorities in your business should be to build a nation of true fans — to develop a sense of community, collaboration, and profitability around the purpose of your business. Let’s begin by breaking the phrase “Build a nation of true fans” into its three core components. First — let’s tackle the word, “Build.” How would you “build” a nation of true fans. Whether that’s a… Podcast Blog YouTube channel Instagram stories The platform from a tech perspective is irrelevant — any or all of the above — will serve your purpose of “building” a nation of true fans. So let’s shift our focus away from the tech — and instead — focus on the value you will be providing through those channels. What’s your story — how will you serve your audience — how will you make what you are doing so valuable to their business or life, that they actually consider you to be indispensable. That you become so consistent in the help, advice, recommendations, and over value that you are providing on a consistent basis — that you BUILD deposits in their emotional bank account. Now let’s shift our attention toward the word “Nation” and break that down. And I want to address to make sure we address this because we live in a world where bigger lists, bigger subscribers, massive downloads, huge customer lists, etc. etc. etc. is what attracts headlines and massive attention. I’m here to share with you the reality…you don’t need an email list of 100,000 people…you don’t need to have a podcast that gets a million downloads a month…you don’t need to have a customer list with 20,000 prospects on it. Nope. You don’t. That’s not your Nation. What you need — realistically — depending on the size of your business is somewhere between 100 to 1,000 high-qualified prospects. That’s it…100 to 1,000 of the very best prospects who precisely match your client avatar — in fact — your knowledge with some of these people is so deep that you can boldly claim them as your Dream 50 prospects. If you need a refresher on why your Dream 50 matters — please go back to Episode 308 of Onward Nation — and I map it all out — how to figure out who your Dream 50 is — and — how to romance your Dream 50 so they understand how important they are to you. Again, that was in Episode 308. To take this point deeper — I want to share a very tangible example of a company that grew from zero to become a multi-billion a year company — yes — billion — with a capital B. My mentor, Darren Hardy, former publisher of SUCCESS Magazine…decided to interview my friend Cody Foster, co-founder of Advisors Excel and to share the interview on the March 2014 edition of the SUCCESS CD that rides along with the magazine. You may remember Cody Foster, and the wisdom he shared, as my guest on Episode 81 of Onward Nation. Nope. Strike three. Instead…what they did focus on was carefully, meticulously selecting, 1,000 of the very best financial advisors who they wanted to earn the opportunity to serve. The result outcome? Well, in year six of the business…they reached over $4 billion in revenue. $4 billion, Onward Nation. When they are the right prospects — you don’t need 10,000…you actually only need a small number to make your business amazingly successful and profitable. 1,000 people — who you can love on — who you can support — who you can add value to — who then in turn are excited to do for you some of what you already shared with them. So now, let’s take this number — 1,000 — deeper — because it is a magical number that we all ought to really focus on in our businesses. Kevin Kelly was the first person — at least I think he was the first person — who popularized the theory — the notion — the strategy that if a business created a base of customers who were more like fans — 1,000 True Fans in fact — then that business could become sustainable and profitable by simply focusing on the needs of its true fans. And here is a link to Kevin Kelly’s blog post as well as the long tail curve he created to illustrate the 1,000 true fans strategy. Kelly describes — or defines — “True Fans” as customers who will help you mobilize and move your business onward to that next level. They are true fans of you — true fans of your message — true fans of your business. Fans who will support you — because — of the sacred bond you have built with them. A bond that was built upon — and continues to be built upon — the foundation of the value you create, you deliver, and the value you share with them on a consistent basis. As I mentioned at the onset of this solocast. Again…it doesn’t matter if you use a podcast, blog, robust LNKD profile and LNKD publishing, long form posts on Medium, Instagram stories, Facebook Live, and the list goes on. What’s important to identify is not the platform you are most comfortable — but — the platform your fans use the most — what is the best conduit to them? For me — it’s this podcast, my LinkedIn account, email campaigns, and webinars. But there is also another piece to True Fans…and that are the concentric circles of “Lesser Fans.” These folks will not purchase everything you produce, and may not seek out direct contact, but they will buy much of what you produce. Onward Nation…that is one of the reasons I ask for feedback in every solocast. My team and I legitimately want to get better — but — I also want to hear from you — to get to know you — to learn from you — and to deliver even more value so Onward Nation becomes — and hopefully remains — your most favorite podcast. Okay…with that said…and before we go…I want to make one final connection between today’s lesson and the favor that I asked you to do for me at the onset of our discussion today. I know that I have absolutely no permission to make an ask of your time — unless — I have consistently delivered value. And — even if I have consistently delivered value — I must be considerate in the favors I ask for — no one wants to spend time with the takers — the people who just ask, ask, ask, and never ever give. So, Onward Nation — I am using today’s solocast as a way to ask for a legitimate favor — and — to give you a recipe for how you can do the same to build you own nation of true fans — and when you do — your nation — just like Onward Nation has become this amazing, awesome, wonderful, beautiful incredible platform of people who are so generous with your feedback and help guide your business in the exact direction it needs to go in order to deliver even more value to what it is they need. So build your own platform for your business — or if you already have one — think about Kevin Kelly’s lesson — and ask yourself how you can add even more and more value to your the people already in your community — and build your nation of true fans. Because when you do — your business, your team, your life will move onward to a completely new level. So with that…I want to say thank you again for taking the time to be here with me today. It is an honor to have you here — thank you for tuning in — I am delighted you chose this episode to be what you listen to, study, and take with you on your morning run, or maybe Onward Nation has become part of your daily commute, or in some other way has become part of your morning routine. I want you to know how much I appreciate you sharing some of your invaluable 86,400 seconds you have in your day with me and the strategies we learn and share each day from today’s top business owners. And please continue to let me know what you think of Onward Nation…good or bad…I always want your feedback. We will be back tomorrow with an incredible encore interview with Paul Maskill — you will not want to miss Paul’s philosophy when he encourages you to, “Go ahead — make mistakes on purpose,” Onward Nation. The conversation with Paul is packed full of discussions regarding systems — and more specifically — how he used systems to sell his company for 6 times what he bought it for and 4 times the profit. This systems discussion will help you create financial leverage within your business. Until then, onward with gusto!

017 Can Sexual Addiction be Conquered? – Joe Dallas

This week Kevin continues to examine the tough issue of sexuality by talking with Joe Dallas, an expert on sexual addiction and homosexuality. Dallas is an author, conference speaker, and ordained pastoral counselor. His writings have been featured in both Christian and secular media (such as The Christian Research Journal and The Los Angeles Times), and he has made appearances on a variety of television programs (ABC Evening News, The Joan Rivers Show, and others). Joe has a Masters Degree in Christian counseling and is a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors. He is the program director of Genesis Biblical Counseling, a ministry that helps men deal with sexual addiction. Joe’s life is a fascinating story that makes him uniquely qualified to speak on issues of sexual identity. In his youth he experienced attraction to both men and women, and lived a promiscuous bisexual lifestyle before becoming a Christian. Even after he came to God, it took Joe years to leave his lifestyle behind. From 1978-1984 he worked at a pro-gay church, was a homosexual activist, and believed that homosexuality and Christianity are compatible. A change occurred when he realized that he wasn’t really listening to what the Bible had to say about the issue, but was projecting his own opinions onto it. In order to truly start following God’s leading, he moved to a new city and got involved in a Bible-believing church. After accepting the truth about his lifestyle Joe took a huge step of faith: regardless of what sort of feelings and attractions he would have in the future, regardless of whether he would ever have another relationship, and regardless of whether he would ever marry or have a family, Joe decided to submit his sexuality to God and stop practicing the homosexual lifestyle. After living in obedience to God, Joe was fortunate enough to meet a woman he was attracted to, and she became his wife. However, Joe acknowledges that not all people with homosexual attraction will have the same experience; others turn to God and never have a change in their attractions. As Kevin and Joe discuss the issue of sexual identity, a central idea emerges: each person’s sexual desires and experiences are different, but anyone can choose to honor God through their lifestyle and behavior. Joe shares his perspectives on a variety of related issues, such as how Christian parents should react if their child comes out as homosexual, and what the church should do to reach out to homosexual communities. Through it all, Joe shows that shows that God is loving, and because of this he calls us to be holy. Though sexuality is complex, it can also be manageable, even after one has fallen into addiction. Visit Joe’s website at JoeDallas.com for more info on the counseling resources and services he has to offer. This episode first aired on July 12th, 2015. Do you really have to turn off your brain to believe the Bible? It is a common myth that science and the Bible have always been in conflict, and the case of Galileo is often cited as proof. But not only is Galileo’s story misinterpreted to fit this agenda (see here for an explanation); there are numerous examples of the Bible being surprisingly consistent with, or even ahead of, scientific knowledge. In this episode Kevin goes over some of these examples to show that in reality, science the Bible are best friends forever. What accurate scientific information can be found in the Bible? For one, it acknowledges that the earth is resting on nothing (Job 26:7; yes it is supported by the invisible force of gravity, but it is not held up by any physical object). It states that the heavens are stretching out (Psalm 104:2 among others, in line with the expansion of the universe), and that all of creation is wearing out and will one day pass away (Psalm 102:25-27, in line with the laws of thermodynamics). The Bible has also recognized significant medical principles, such as the fact that “the life of the flesh is in the blood” (Leviticus 17:11; contrary to the once-scientific practice of bloodletting), the importance of washing the body and the hands (Leviticus 14:8-9 and others), and the practice of quarantining those with infectious diseases (Leviticus 13). As Kevin demonstrates throughout the episode, Christians do not have to worry about whether science or the Bible is true; the Bible has repeatedly been vindicated, once science catches up to it. The Diki-Diki cocktail sounds just dirty enough to make the 12 year-old boy in you giggle. Grow up! This is a sophisticated podcast. Hee-hee, it sounds like dick. The ingredients are definitely not the usual suspects, featuring the infrequently used grapefruit juice, the Normandy-based apple brandy, Calvados, and finally Swedish Punsch, an arrack-based liqueur. Wait a minute. No gin? No whiskey? No bitters? What kind of a cocktail is this? Unlike most of the cocktails we have covered, we know the exact origins of the cocktail AND its name! In his 1922 book, Cocktails: How to Mix Them, bartender Robert Vermeire, claims that he created it at the Embassy Club in February of 1922, and named it after the king of a Philippine island. I love it when the information is right there. During the 1920s, King Panglima Diki-Diki, was going public in his search for a bride. What made this newsworthy was that he apparently was under 40 inches tall and weighed around 25 lbs, and he found a bride of similar stature on a neighboring island. Join us as we explore this cocktail, King Diki-Diki, and a little bit of Robert Vermeire’s life. The ingredients are as follows: 1.5 oz Calvados 1/2 oz Swedish Punsch 3/4 oz Grapefruit Juice We were excited to try this cocktail. The ingredients seemed so exotic and special. We really wanted to like it. But it just was not to be. As Kevin said, “It was not greater than the sum of its parts.” Nevertheless, I’m glad to have become acquainted with the Diki Diki and the story of its origins.
