Hurricane Melissa: Concrete Kingston Spared, St. Catherine's Suffers Utter Devastation Guest: Reverend Bill Develin Reverend Bill Develin reports from Kingston, Jamaica, describing Hurricane Melissa as an "unbelievable storm" that surpasses others he has experienced. The Category 5 hurricane features incredible winds reaching 185 mph and torrential rainfall, creating a "toxic mix and meteorological disaster." Develin, located in Kingston on a hill in a concrete home, did not need to evacuate and notes that Kingston has "definitely been spared," though power has been out in his neighborhood for approximately 12 hours and half of New Kingston's business district remains in darkness. In stark contrast, St. Catherine's Parish, approximately 120 miles to the west, has experienced "utter and complete devastation." This underserved, rural, and impoverished area is largely constructed of wood structures with zinc metal roofs, making homes highly vulnerable to the storm, comparable to the poorest parts of New Orleans during previous hurricanes. St. Catherine's Parish was on a mandatory evacuation list of 25 areas; fortunately, though the state public hospital's roof was ripped off, all patients and staff had been evacuated the day before the storm. The government of Jamaica, including Prime Minister Andrew Holness and the Office of Disaster Preparedness, performed exceptionally, establishing 880 safe shelters across the island and maintaining overall preparedness. The Ministry of Transportation hopes the airport will reopen within 48 hours to allow relief flights carrying humanitarian aid from organizations like Samaritan's Purse, the International Red Cross, and the European Union Humanitarian Relief Effort. Despite these efforts, devastation across western Jamaica from May Pen to Montego Bay—where 25,000 tourists shelter—will require massive cleanup efforts lasting at least a year, constituting a "double whammy" for communities still recovering from Hurricane Barrel, which struck over a year prior with similar force. Hurricane Melissa is expected to travel north through Montego Bay, then turn obliquely eastward toward Cuba, barrel into western Haiti, pass near the Bahamas and Bermuda, and eventually dissipate into the Mid-Atlantic Ocean.
About the New Orleans based group Captain Buckels, a band made up of top A-list musicians who have backed many household names! The majority of tracks on Hurry Up the debut album from "Captain Buckles" are funky, rockin' instrumentals written by guitarist Alexander Mallet: kickin', and organic. Captain Buckles takes risks, grooves and moves with powerful chemistry and a punk, irreverent attitude that prompts listeners to feel good to be human. "Bus Station Blues" and "Raindrops on Mardi Gras,” are soulful slinky tunes featuring masterful vocals by keys man Rob Davis. "This Time" is a rock ballad by a close friend of the group, Michael Darby. After years of incubating, Captain Buckles has found its own trademark sound steeped in the grooves and funk of New Orleans and the elements that make American music emotionally moving and stylistically unique. The band jams hard while emphasizing musical exploration and dynamic subtlety, showing the inspiration from of icons like The Meters, Allman Brothers, and The Band but utilizing those influences to create a style all their own. The members of Captain Buckles include New Orleans born-and-raised Rob Davis and Ezell Smith Jr., as well as Los Angeles transplant Smitti Supab, Pennsylvanian Phil Breen, who've both played professionally in the Crescent City for 13+ years. Florida ex-pat Alex Mallet is the newcomer of the crew having arrived a mere eight years ago. Before forming Captain Buckles, the members had performed with each other in various line-ups for years between touring as backing musicians with national and international acts like Eric Lindell, Samantha Fish, Russell Batiste, John "Papa" Gros, Glen David Andrews, and many others. They transitioned to working as a distinctive, butt-shaking unit all their own two years ago, a no-nonsense brotherhood of hard-working sidemen, championing good vibes and an intense love of music. Comics journalist Josh Neufeld joins the show to talk about the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the legacy of his fantastic graphic reporting of the lives upended by that catastrophe, A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge (Pantheon). We talk about his new 'zine followup, Beyond A.D., how the storm inspired him to become an emergency response volunteer and what he learned when he was stationed in Biloxi, what it was like to learn journalism and reporting on the fly and integrate those with his comics storytelling skills, and why his goal with A.D. was to make a people's history. We get into how he viewed the anniversary, whether he's gone back to New Orleans since reporting on it, and how he stayed connected with his subjects after the project and what it was like putting the anniversary 'zine together. We also discuss his comics upbringing, what it was like drawing for Harvey Pekar after years of American Splendor fandom, how constraints can lead to greater creativity, how neither of us have the lying gene necessary for fiction, his interest in graphic medicine and how that shapes his recent comics, the difference between journalism and nonfiction, a couple of my Small Press Expo anecdotes, how Michael Jordan's minor league baseball experience helps explain why comics people (usually) treat newbies well, and more. Across the South, the word witch has been used to explain what people fear and cannot control. For generations, healers, midwives, conjurers and root workers carried knowledge their communities needed, yet often faced suspicion when tragedy struck. In this episode of Southern Mysteries, we explore the real lives and southern legends behind those branded as witches. From colonial courts to mountain cabins and coastal swamps, these stories reveal how the line between healing and haunting has always been thin and how fear can turn ordinary people into figures of folklore. Get ready for an inspiring journey through untold stories of brilliance and creativity! In this episode, we dive deep into two incredible narratives that shine a light on overlooked pioneers who have transformed our understanding of science and music. First up, we meet Katie Hafner, the powerhouse behind the Lost Women of Science podcast and Middle Grade Novel. She's on a mission to uncover the remarkable stories of women scientists who have been systematically erased from history. Imagine brilliant minds whose groundbreaking work was stolen, ignored, or simply forgotten. From Dora Richardson, who synthesized the life-saving breast cancer drug tamoxifen, to Katie's own grandmother who researched premature infant blindness, these women are finally getting the recognition they deserve. Then, we switch gears to D A Royster's heartwarming tale of "Happy Music," a vibrant celebration of New Orleans jazz history. Through the eyes of a young girl, we explore the legendary Club Desire - a groundbreaking venue started by Dana's grandfather in the 1940s. This was no ordinary music club - it was a cultural landmark where legends like Fats Domino and Ella Fitzgerald got their start, breaking racial barriers one musical note at a time. Both stories share a powerful message: creativity, innovation, and passion know no boundaries. Whether you're a science enthusiast, music lover, or just someone who appreciates incredible human stories, this episode will inspire you to look beyond the surface and celebrate the unsung heroes who have shaped our world. Dockworkers by day, blood-drinkers by night, these two anomalies still haunt the streets of the French Quarter, with their 1932 case of vampiric crime, courtroom drama, and mysterious vanishings that blurred the line between fact and folklore. From vanished bodies to mental health myths and Anne Rice parallels, this one's part history, part hysteria, and all haunt. Perfect part deaux for this spooky season!Edited by Maxwell Holechek

There’s a term in psychology that also applies to marketing. It’s called “The Halo Effect.” It refers to how we can make sometimes incorrect assumptions based on a collection of pieces of information. For a business case study let’s take a look at a lighting company that was founded in the UK in 2015, called Tala. Tala designs and sells lighting fixtures that are elegant, environmentally friendly, focused on sustainability - they’re able to be repaired, and if they have to be discarded they’re recyclable – and they’ve been featured in Architectural Digest. The company has an international reach, is widely admired, and is financially successful. The Halo Effect would have us believe their lighting fixtures must be exclusive and expensive, and the company must have its eye firmly on profit. Well, the truth is somewhat different. Tala is what’s called a B-Corp – it’s a registration given to companies that focus on using business as a force for good, striving for inclusive, equitable, and sustainable economic practices. And Tala’s lighting fixtures are inexpensive – you can find them online at Wayfair. And, to complete the expect-the-unexpected list of circumstances at Tala, the Chairman of the Board of this innovative and progressive company is New Orleanian, Anthony Robins. We can make incorrect Halo Effect type generalizations about other businesses too. For example, when we hear “Wedding Reception Venue” we typically picture a high-school-gym kind of vibe, with a stage for a band or DJ. When we hear “Hotel,” we expect it to be something between a Holiday Inn and the Ritz Carlton – the only difference being the amenities and the cost. A local company called Workshop WDXL (pronounced in speech, "W.D 40") is challenging all of these assumptions. The W.D. part of the name is the initials of the team’s principals, Jessica Walker and David Demsey, and XL is forty is in Roman numerals. Some of the Halo-Effect-busting, non-traditional, New Orleans businesses Workshop WD 40 have created are, the wedding venue, Felicity Church, and the hotels and villas, The Syd and The Mitzie. All of these projects have won prestigious architecture and design awards. When we talk about the environmental impact of human activities, we’re generally talking about burning fossil fuel, the use of plastics, pollution from factories and farms, and even the use of AC systems and aerosols. The one thing that does not seem to show up on these lists is lighting. And yet, every single home on Earth that has electricity has multiple light fixtures and lightbulbs. And we know that inefficient bulbs burn more fossil fuels, light pollution reshapes ecosystems, and discarded light fixtures add to the world’s growing mountain of e-waste. One of the core values of Tala is to address these issues - and to package the solutions as elegant, attractive, and affordable light fixtures. Most architects dream about designing cool, quirky, inventive buildings. Most commercial property developers are focused on budgets – bringing projects in on time and as cheaply as possible. Most real estate developers are looking for bells and whistles that will pitch a property as high up the price range as a market will bear. These three goals are often at odds with each other but Workshop WDXL, is juggling all 3 of these balls. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. We're creeping closer to Halloween, and Louisiana Eats is spoiling for a fright! We're back with the second episode of our 15th anniversary scare-a-thon, bringing you tales of haunted New Orleans locales and a businesswoman in the French Quarter who's just batty for vampires. We begin with Marita Crandle, author and owner of the Vampire Café and Vampire Apothecary Restaurant & Bar in the Vieux Carré. Marita tells us how she went from owning a little gift shop to building a hospitality empire around those bloodsucking creatures of the night. She explains how her blood bag cocktails became the newest trend in cocktails and why it was so important to make a non-alcoholic version for the kids. Then, we pry into our vaults to bring you our ghost tour of Courtyard Brewery, which is operating out of an old New Orleans funeral home. We not only hear stories of hauntings from the brewery's staff, but we encounter a possible poltergeist ourselves! And finally, another favorite Louisiana Eats moment that will never die: our conversation with our resident medium, Debbie Duvall, who put me in touch with Tujague Restaurant's famous cross-dressing ghost, Julian Eltinge. But not before Julian gave Debbie the fright of her life! For more of all things Louisiana Eats, be sure to visit us at PoppyTooker.com.

New Orleans — a city where the dead outnumber the living, and every cobblestone seems to whisper a ghost story. From cursed ground to voodoo queens, plagues, fires, and floods, it's a place forever haunted by its own past. But among all its dark legends, one building stands out — the old Ursuline Convent. Its walls once housed pious nuns… and something else. Something that terrified the townsfolk so deeply, they locked their doors at sundown and prayed they'd live to see the morning. Anne and Renata uncover the chilling mystery behind one of New Orleans' oldest and most feared legends, in this episode of True Hauntings. 649. This week we chat with Leah Payne about her book, God Gave Rock and Roll To You: A History of Contemporary Christian Music. We focus especially on the role of the family of Jimmy Swaggart, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Mickey Gilley in the history of Rock and Roll. Her book chronicles the confluence of evangelical, Pentecostal, and charismatic networks through the lens of Contemporary Christian Music, or CCM. The book indexes American evangelicalism's political and social aspirations as seen through its cultural intermediaries: the youth group leaders, non-profit groups, industry executives, and parents who contributed to what was morally permissible and economically profitable in CCM. "In a natural glade of the swamp stood a grassy island of perhaps an acre's extent, clear of trees and tolerably dry. On this now leaped and twisted a more indescribable horde of human abnormality than any but a Sime or an Angarola could paint. Void of clothing, this hybrid spawn were braying, bellowing, and writhing about a monstrous ring-shaped bonfire; in the centre of which, revealed by occasional rifts in the curtain of flame, stood a great granite monolith some eight feet in height; on top of which, incongruous in its diminutiveness, rested the noxious carven statuette."
