Why do so many high achievers secretly struggle with anxiety, burnout, and overwhelm? Dr. Elizabeth Stanley, Army veteran, Georgetown professor, and author of Widen the Window, joins Michael Hyatt to explain the hidden science behind stress and resilience. Drawing on her personal story of trauma, her background in the military, and her training in somatic therapy, Elizabeth reveals why talk therapy alone often falls short—and how body-based practices can change everything. This conversation is honest, practical, and deeply hopeful for anyone who feels stuck in patterns of stress.Memorable Quotes“We're all in it together and we're all experiencing the particular lawful ways that this human mind and body works in this particular poly-crisis world. Of course, people are struggling. It's kind of why it's my passion to help people understand ‘You're not alone in this.'”“We are wired organically to be able to mobilize the energy to manage a crisis or a stressful situation, and then recover. Our ancestors that shared the same wiring that we have did not have 24/7 constant activation and constant demands the way that we do in modern life today.”“The science term there is allostatic load, and the more our stress load grows, the less capacity we have in our mind and body to meet the next challenge, so that it becomes a bit of a vicious cycle, and we know that we're on the edge of our window or outside of our window of tolerance.”“We are built so that we learn the downregulation through the soothing we receive from our parents and other early caregivers. And that presumes that our early caregivers and parents were regulated enough to do that for us.”“If we're redirecting it somewhere that the survival brain perceives as safe, that actually starts conditioning. A process that makes the system move back in the way that we're organically built, which is to go through stress and recover naturally.”“When we don't perceive agency, when we feel powerless or helpless, that actually leads to higher levels of arousal and it really resolidifies the prior conditioning. So being able to access that choice point is really critical in beginning to shift it.”“If our parents had narrowed windows, if they were coping with a lot of stress and trauma, or if they were absent, if they had mental illness or they were incarcerated, they aren't able to help us wire those things. It's one of the ways that narrowed windows get transmitted intergenerationally and why trauma can become intergenerational.”Key TakeawaysYou're Not Broken. Chronic anxiety and overwhelm are signs of dysregulation, not defects. They're the evidence of what you've walked through—but don't determine what's ahead.Your Body Knows the Way. Healing starts by listening to the signals of your nervous system. The key is not to minimize our reactions, but to listen and practice strategies that help us return to baseline.Talk Therapy Isn't Enough. True healing requires engaging the body and nervous system. Trauma-informed, body-based therapy can lead to breakthroughs when just thinking and talking isn't enough.Agency Is Key. Learning to notice choice points rewires the brain toward safety. The quickest way out of powerlessness is regaining a sense of agency.Resilience Can Be Trained. Simple, repeated practices expand your “window of tolerance.” It takes time and intention, but you can widen your window.ResourcesWiden the Window by Elizabeth StanleyElizabeth Stanley's Mindfulness-Based Mind Fitness Training (MMFT)Watch on Youtube at:  https://youtu.be/Z607BPgbxi4This episode was produced by Sarah Vorhees Wendel of VW Sound

Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will

403 Choosing Love First   It's easy to forget that we have free will, that we can choose what we love, what we like, how we choose for others to perceive us. It takes a great deal of self reflection and growth to find the parts of ourselves that are willing to speak up and fight for what we believe in, even if we must speak up and fight against ourselves.  In today's episode Sarah Elkins and Edward Simberg discuss everything from how they met, to their deep love of storytelling, to the core beliefs they both hold dear.    Highlights How do you live the stories you share? How do your stories reflect your values? Do you put genuine human effort into reaching out to a person?  How are your self perceptions skewed? Are you conscious of how you want to be perceived? What is something you want? And what are your next steps in getting there? If you can have foundational love and gratitude your life will change.   Quotes “You need to burn that candle a little bit, before you realize how big that fire really is.” “If you want it, it's way more likely that it's going to happen.”  “We don't choose our interests, that's one of the most interesting things I've learned lately. We don't really choose our thoughts, we don't really choose our interests, they just come to us.” “Do you think love is a choice?”   Dear Listeners it is now your turn, I have a few questions for you: The first is, what is something you say you're not good at and maybe it's time to ask yourself the question, am I not good at it or have I decided not to be good at it? Have I decided not to try? Is it something I call inauthentic when it's actually uncomfortable or I don't like it? The next thing I would love to hear from you about is what was your takeaway? I was thinking about the difference between love and like, and why I feel like love is a more important choice to people and things. Because that will color how you choose happiness as well. And Last, I would love to hear what you are going to do with this one precious life and having conversations -extended conversations- with people in your community. Now, Go.             And, as always, thank you for listening.  Mentioned In This Episode Shawn Achor TedTalk   About Edward - A digital nomad who's been traveling the world for the last 5 years - Business owner specialized in building premium websites and social media profiles - I have exercised every day for more than 5 years (haven't skipped a day) - Lover of dogs, philosophy books, fitness, travel, storytelling Be sure to check out Edward's LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram! As well as his website Max Capacity Agency!   About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. In this episode of Do The Work | Mindset Mastery, I talk about the power of deposits the small, consistent actions that build the life you truly want. The Vision That Started It All This past weekend, I celebrated my birthday surrounded by my family. It reminded me how far I've come from that 16 year old kid who dreamed of owning his first car. Back then, I didn't have the money, but I had a clear vision. I knew exactly what I wanted, and that vision became the fuel that carried me through the work that was required. Every lawn I cut, every car I washed, every dollar I saved was a deposit toward that goal. My parents taught me that work ethic mattered, but I learned early that effort without direction isn't enough. You need a vision to reinforce your actions. That's what kept me going knowing that each deposit, no matter how small, was getting me closer to something bigger. When I finally bought that red 1987 Nissan Sentra, it wasn't just about the car. It was about proving to myself that anything I truly want requires consistent deposits over time. Deposits and Withdrawals That same principle applies to everything in life business, marriage, health, and faith. For years, I forgot that. I worked hard but neglected the deposits that mattered most. In my marriage, I withdrew more than I deposited. I expected peace, connection, and understanding, but I wasn't putting in the daily effort to earn them. The same thing happened in my business. I made the right deposits for a while, saw success, then stopped reinforcing those habits. When challenges hit, I had nothing left to pull from. I was overdrafted emotionally, mentally, and financially. It wasn't until my mid 30s that I realized the pattern. The moments I neglected myself skipped workouts, ignored my faith, avoided hard conversations were withdrawals. Every ignored priority created debt that showed up later as frustration, stress, or failure. The Power of Preparation Life will test you. You can make every deposit and still face setbacks. What matters is whether you've prepared yourself to recover. When I had surgery recently, I was back at the office the next day not because I'm superhuman, but because my body and mind are conditioned through years of consistent deposits. The same applies to business and relationships. You can't expect to withstand challenges if you haven't built the endurance to do so. Most people don't break because of one bad day. They break because of a slow burn months or years of neglecting the deposits that build strength and clarity. That's why I train daily. That's why I eat clean, journal, pray, and stay connected to my purpose. These actions prepare me for the inevitable withdrawals life demands. Living from Surplus The goal isn't just to make deposits it's to create a surplus. When you live in surplus, you operate from overflow, not survival. You can give more to your family, your business, your faith, and your community because you're not running on empty. Scarcity, abundance, and prosperity are all connected. Scarcity is survival mode. Abundance feels good but can vanish with one bad decision. Prosperity is the standard when your deposits are so consistent that even a setback can't derail you. That's what I'm building toward every day. Prosperity in mind, body, and spirit. It's what allows me to show up for my family, lead this company, and continue to grow with purpose. Reflection Questions Where in your life are you trying to withdraw without first making enough deposits? What daily actions could you commit to that would strengthen your spiritual, mental, or physical bank accounts? Are you living in scarcity, abundance, or prosperity and what would it take to reach the next level? Notable Quotes “Anything that I want is going to require deposits.” “Every skipped workout, every ignored conversation, every avoided marketing piece it all adds up.” “The goal is not just to make deposits but to build a surplus that allows you to live from overflow, not survival.” Follow A.Z. Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will

402 Freedom in Healing Throughout life we may make decisions, or be subject to decisions made involving us. Whether it's first or second hand, inevitably we begin to believe in a pattern in the behavior around us, oftentimes leading to self doubt and worse. However, if we keep moving forward, actively choosing to make the best of a situation, to learn and grow in order to better ourselves for ourselves, we will find our freedom in healing.   In today's episode, Sarah Elkins and Holli Tabren McEachern discuss the importance of growth, healing, and the honesty that comes with self reflection. Honesty not just with the world, but with yourself and what has happened to make you feel the way you do, and how it triggers you.    Highlights Empathy in a world of cruelty is the bravest rebellion.  How have you been programmed?  Have you ever encountered favoritism?  What choices are you making that reflect your behavior? Do you feel like you have to justify these choices?   Quotes “I think it's because we look at society, and we look at the grandma with the grandkids and the grandma always spoils the grandkids. You have this program, like your program, program from the way things are. Program from the way everybody does things.”    “And God, he prepares you for what's next. You don't know it's preparation. You don't realize that all these things that happen in your life, even the bad choices you make, will prepare you for the next thing.”  “You have to change you before anything in the situation can change.”   Dear Listeners it is now your turn, Where are you incarcerated? What are you choosing not to see in your own decisions? That maybe with a little light on them can help you find more satisfaction and happiness in your life. It's a simple question, but the answer might be tricky. And, as always, thank you for listening.    About Holli Holli Tabren is an author, speaker, mentor, and reentry specialist dedicated to helping women rebuild their lives and reclaim their power after incarceration. She is the author of Blood Ain't Thicker, The Path2Redemption Anthology, and her newest release, Becoming HER. Play Episode Listen Later Oct 13, 2025 23:25

In this episode of Do The Work | Mindset Mastery, I talk about something that's been part of my life for as long as I can remember nervousness. That constant edge of anxiety that creeps in whether things are going really good or starting to slow down. It's that feeling of a fast heartbeat, like something's about to fall apart, even when everything is actually working. I've learned it's not something to eliminate, it's something to understand and manage. The Reality of Nervousness and Growth I've realized that this nervousness doesn't go away no matter how much success you have. My mentors, the ones doing eight figures a year, feel it too. That fear of losing it all, that anxiety that says “what if this doesn't last?” it's human. What matters is how we respond. There was a time I thought I was broken because I saw others who seemed constantly confident, always motivated. I thought something was wrong with me for feeling fear even when things were good. But that's just how we're wired, especially if you come from instability or scarcity. It's a natural part of growth. The danger is when we fight those feelings instead of listening to them. I used to get anxious about being anxious, frustrated that I couldn't just “turn it off.” But now I see it as an indicator. It's like the check engine light on your car. It doesn't mean everything's falling apart; it's just telling you to check something before it becomes a bigger issue. When Fear Becomes a Signal Most of the time, my anxiety comes from integrity saying I'll do something and not following through. It's not really about the post that flopped or the client that backed out. Those are surface level issues. The root is often in what I've avoided: the calls I haven't made, the marketing I've stopped doing, or the systems I've neglected. When I start feeling that nervousness, I've learned to ask: What did I stop doing that I said I'd do? Because those emotions are not punishment, they're reminders. And for those of us who feel that fear even when everything's going right, that's also part of it. I used to ruin good moments vacations, dinners, weekends by thinking something had to go wrong soon. I was addicted to the struggle because I believed success only counted if it was hard. Now I know it's okay to feel good and still stay prepared. That nervous energy can be redirected into gratitude and intentional action. The Comparison Trap Social media has made it easy to feed our anxiety. We see someone else winning and think it means we're losing. But success isn't limited. Just because another agent closes a big deal doesn't mean there's less for you. Their win doesn't take away from yours. Instead of spiraling into “I'm not good enough,” ask, What can I learn from them? What can I apply to my own business? And when those thoughts of failure come in what if my leads stop, what if the market shifts, what if everything changes remember this: it has always worked out. No matter how bad it's looked before, it's always worked out. Closing Thoughts As we enter the last stretch of the year, that nervous energy might feel stronger. The market slows, holidays approach, and our minds start racing. But don't attach meaning to every anxious thought. Instead, use it as fuel to get back to what you said you'd do. Identify it, appreciate what you have, and take action. It's okay to feel nervous. It's okay to feel fear. You're not broken. You're growing. And just like every other time before, it will all work out. Reflective Questions When you feel anxious or nervous, what commitments or actions have you avoided that might be causing it? How often do you allow comparison to steal appreciation for where you are right now? What's one thing you can take action on today that will help that nervousness fade? Notable Quotes “It's like being anxious about being anxious. The real problem starts when you fight the feeling instead of understanding it.” “That nervousness isn't a sign that things are falling apart it's a check engine light reminding you to realign.” “It's okay to feel good and still be prepared. Identify it, appreciate it, and take action.” Follow A.Z. Araujo on Social Media: Instagram: @azaraujo Facebook: A.Z. Araujo TikTok: A.Z. What if the key to a meaningful life isn't doing more—but doing less, with intention? In this powerful conversation, Michael and Megan talk with Oliver Burkeman, author of Four Thousand Weeks and Meditations for Mortals, about the myths of productivity, the illusion of control, and why accepting our finite nature might be the best thing we can do for our peace, purpose, and productivity.Memorable Quotes“It's the relaxation of now I can just do the things that matter the most… I can just sort of dive in because I'm no longer trying to make all my actions feel like they are part of some process of eventually getting to total domination of my time and perfect optimization.”“You are being confronted again with this ridiculous thing that it is to be a human—which is to be capable of imagining basically an infinite amount of possibilities and eventualities, but ultimately being a sort of finite material animal and having to choose only some of them.”“Almost everybody who is trying to sort of optimize themselves into absolute control, you know, they're not succeeding. Life is miserable and they're letting people down all over the place.”“There isn't any system or philosophy or approach or sports nutrition drink that is going to enable you to sort of win the battle with human limitation… Now, we figure out how to flourish in absolutely fantastic and wonderfully meaningful and interesting and lucrative ways within those limitations rather than running away from them.”“There's a way of going with the flow that is actually more constructive and productive as well as more peaceful and meaningful.”“I really found that just sort of expecting discomfort from things that matter to me—whether that is a piece of work or an aspect of relationships or parenting—just knowing that it's going to feel uncomfortable sometimes because it's bringing me to my edge and my limitations makes a huge, huge difference.”“A lot of our productivity is the result of anxiety. And I would like to live a productive life for other reasons.”Key TakeawaysRadical Acceptance is Key. Once you stop trying to win the battle with your human limitations, everything changes.Distraction is Avoidance in Disguise. Most often, we're dodging discomfort—and the way out lies in tolerating discomfort.Optimization is Not Salvation. We think we can problem-solve our lives, but tools and systems will always fall short. They're meant to augment, not make us infinite.Meaning is Here, Now. In this episode of Do The Work | Mindset Mastery As we head into the final quarter of 2025, I can't help but reflect on how quickly this year has passed. For some it has been a year of breakthroughs, for others a season of struggle, and for many it has been the same repeated cycle with no real progress. I know that space well because I spent years stuck there, constantly comparing myself to others, replaying the same broken record of frustration and disappointment. What I learned is that when you remain in that weakened state and do nothing, it always makes things worse. There is no positive outcome that comes from inaction. It took me years of turmoil, fights at home, depression, and setbacks before I finally said enough was enough. I had to let go of arrogance, become a student, and follow a proven model with absolute discipline. That model taught me to take care of my body, grow my mind, and improve my business every single day. Eleven years later, that same discipline has carried me through highs and lows, created stability, and given me the responsibility to teach others to do the same. Last week, I interviewed one of our top producers, Felipe. His story hit hard. His mother in law is battling a terminal illness, and his family is carrying that weight every single day. Yet he continues to show up, smiling, working, and leading his family. He's able to remain strong because he follows the same model he built in times of peace. He makes his power deposits, his purpose deposits, and his profit deposits, even in the middle of heartbreak. That discipline allows him to stay strong when most would break. And that is the lesson. Discipline is what steadies you when the storms of life hit. Without it, you ride an emotional roller coaster that everyone around you feels your family, your clients, even strangers on Instagram. But with discipline, you create stability. You show up the same way whether life is good or life is breaking apart. You keep moving forward regardless of fear, anger, or doubt. I've lived this through every season of my business and my life: from financial ruin, to injuries, to losing agents, to being told the company wouldn't survive. And each time, I kept showing up, making my deposits, holding to the model. You wouldn't know my fear or my doubt because I refused to let it dictate my actions. That is what built this company, that is what built my family, and that is what continues to build my life today. So as we close this year, ask yourself: are you operating from feelings, or are you following a standard? Are you making deposits every day, or are you hoping that things just work out? Because without discipline, you don't stand a chance. With it, you create a foundation that allows you to not only survive but thrive no matter what comes your way. Reader Engagement Questions Where in your life do you need to raise your standard so discipline guides you instead of feelings? How do your family, clients, and peers experience you when things fall apart do they see strength or instability? What daily deposits can you commit to right now that will keep you steady through both success and hardship? Notable Quotes “If you are in a weakened position and you do nothing, it makes things worse. There is no positive that could come out of that.” “Discipline allows you to remain strong in moments of tragedy, in moments of weakness, in moments of doubt and fear but you wouldn't know.” “Regardless of where I am in life, I show up the very same way day in and day out. But again, you wouldn't know.” Follow A.Z. Araujo on Social Media: Instagram: @azaraujo Facebook: A.Z. Araujo TikTok: A.Z.      I deeply believe you can transform your life, with the best habits. And electrify your winning, with the right rituals.A superb morning routine will help you realize your potential and deliver on your opportunities. Why?…because the way you begin your day sets the entire tone of your day. …and your days become your weeks which then become your quarters, years and decades.…starting earlier will also give you the time you need to read, run, paint, pray and do those things that will make you stronger, wiser, happier and healthier. …and rising with the sun will upgrade your willpower so you say no to the trivial and yes to the essential.Go ahead and get your copy of The 5AM Club book here and start reading it fast! FOLLOW ROBIN SHARMA:InstagramFacebookTwitterYouTube

ELIZABETH OLDFIELD: Becoming Steady, Connected, and Fully Alive

What if the key to thriving isn't managing your circumstances perfectly—but rooting yourself in the connections that matter most? In this heartfelt conversation, Michael and Megan talk with Elizabeth Oldfield, author of Fully Alive, about reclaiming depth, community, and soul-level steadiness in a culture addicted to speed and distraction. Elizabeth draws on ancient wisdom, modern insight, and her own experience living in intentional community to offer a hopeful path forward.Memorable Quotes“You need to put your roots down deep into love and work out how to find some steadiness.”“When we are honest about our full humanity, we give other people permission to do that, and that's a necessary starting point for actually growing up our souls rather than pretending that we all know what we're doing and we're holding it all together.”“Where we put our attention is essentially who we become.”“I have this sense that fully aliveness is in connection, deep connection, horizontally and vertically.”“Hurrying and destruction are not how we flourish, and we're constantly being encouraged to do those things. So we need to provide some counter pressure towards slowness and steadiness and presence.”Key TakeawaysConnection Is the Core of Flourishing. Relationships—messy, costly, inconvenient—are where we become more fully human.Attention Shapes Who You Become. Distraction isn't just a nuisance; it's a soul-shaping force. Guard your focus.Structure Time Around Your Values. A “rule of life” puts what matters most in place first, so the rest fits around it.Commitment Fuels Depth. Vulnerability without commitment fizzles; together they form lasting community.Ancient Practices Still Work. Sabbath, liturgy, and shared rhythms anchor us in what endures.ResourcesFully Alive by Elizabeth OldfieldThe Sacred podcast by Elizabeth OldfieldWatch on YouTube at:  https://youtu.be/-anckhHSdHMThis episode was produced by Sarah Vorhees Wendel of VW Sound
