#228 - In 2014, a prominent couple from New Jersey was found brutally killed inside their home. They each suffered multiple stab wounds, and the house had been almost burned down to the ground. But after the police wrapped up the investigation, they believed the couple died in a murder-suicide plot. However, those close to the Sheridans disagree they would have done something like this. David Gluckman grew up in South Africa when the country was still in the grip of apartheid. He arrived in London at the start of the sixties and spent a great deal of time chasing women, drinking booze and smoking cigarettes. He was an ad man and, albeit very briefly, he was a copywriter but it was as an inventor of drinks brands that he really found success. There's Baileys, of course, but David also invented Le Piat d'Or, Aqua Libra, Purdeys, The Singleton, Ciroc Vodka, Coole Swan, Smirnoff Black, Sheridans, Tanqueray Ten and many more. Trust us, if you're partial to the occasional alcoholic drink, David's probably got you smashed some time. These days, David writes books and advises start ups. He spoke to Mike McDowall from his home in London. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/remarkablestories/message

In February 2015, the Somerset prosecutor announced that John Sheridan had murdered his wife in cold blood and then killed himself. In 2017, the manner of death was updated to “undetermined.” From the local detectives to the state's Attorney General's office, a lot of people walked away from these murders. If a family as powerful and well-connected as the Sheridans gets such bad treatment, what does this say about the justice system in New Jersey? New voices interviewed in episode: • Ben Barlyn, lawyer who filed a whistleblower lawsuit against the Chris Christie administration. • Peter Sheridan, younger brother of John, and a federal judge in New Jersey.
In 2014, authorities discovered the bodies of political consultant John Sheridan and his wife Joyce in the bedroom of their New Jersey home. A barricaded door, an intentionally set fire, and the discovery of two knives near the bodies led investigators to believe John killed Joyce in a murder/suicide. The couple's family noticed detectives ignored odd things about the evidence, such as the blood patterns and type of knife that made the fatal blow. In a state known for its graft and shoddy police work, could there be something more to the case? In the podcast “Dead End: A New Jersey Political Murder Mystery,” WNYC reporter Nancy Solomon explores the brutal deaths of the Sheridans, their sons' quest for the truth, and the political corruption that looms over the case.OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "DEAD END" BEGIN AROUND THE 33rd MINUTE.
In this episode of Project Footballer, we speak to Daniel Geey. He discusses the do's and don'ts of sports law in youth football. Daniel's clients include Premier League clubs, Champions League football clubs and top agencies. He is an author of multiple books on football contracts and sports law and a partner in the sports group Sheridans. In this fantastic episode, Daniel breaks down what is fact and fiction relating to football agents working with academy players.
The Sheridans' eldest son Mark is consumed with getting to the bottom of what happened to his parents. As the lawyer for Governor Chris Christie's election campaign, Mark is in a unique position to uncover answers. Instead, he's met with roadblock after roadblock. The questions really pile up when he learns that detectives haven't even interviewed several key witnesses or completed a thorough investigation of the crime scene. Not only that, a key piece of evidence is missing. New voices interviewed in episode: • Barry Jansen, retired forensic technician for the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office • Tom Draper, Sheridans' neighbor • Michael Baden, medical examiner hired by the Sheridan brothers A previous version of this episode referred to Mark Sheridan as the “personal lawyer for Chris Christie.” In fact, he was the personal lawyer for the Chris Christie campaign. We have updated the episode to correct this.
On a quiet cul-de-sac, a husband and wife of 47 years are stabbed to death in the stillness of dawn. Honest and unassuming, John Sheridan, famous for never raising his voice, played against type in the rough-and-tumble world of New Jersey politics. Could the Republican lobbyist have killed his wife Joyce—a veteran public school teacher and no-nonsense mother of four sons—then set their bedroom on fire before knifing himself? That's the version of events authorities say happened in the early morning hours of September 28, 2014. But, in more ways than one, the theory doesn't add up. Key voices interviewed in episode:• Christine Todd Whitman, former Governor• Chris Stevens, Joyce Sheridan's best friend• Bob Stevens, husband of Chris' Stevens• Mark Sheridan, eldest of the Sheridans' four sons, lawyer for Governor Chris Christie's campaign and for the state Republican party for more than a decade• Peter Sheridan, John's younger brother and federal judge in Trenton since 2005• Mary Kay Roberts, hired by John Sheridan at Riker Danzig, a New Jersey law firm. Worked with him closely for a decade in the Trenton office• John Farmer, a former state Attorney General and friend of John Sheridan who runs a political research center at Rutgers University A previous version of this episode referred to Mark Sheridan as the “personal lawyer for Chris Christie.” In fact, he was the personal lawyer for the Chris Christie campaign. We have updated the episode to correct this.

John Kennedy talks to David Gluckman, author “That Sh*t Will Never Sell”, the title of which comes from his time in the drinks industry and his key role in the creation of iconic brands like Baileys as well as Kerrygold. Since Baileys was launched in 1974 it has sold more than 120m bottles a year and Kerrygold is the second biggest butter brands in America. He talks about the business of ideas and his involvement in other famous drinks brands including Sheridans, Le Piat d’Or and Aqua Libra, to name a few.

Nein, kleiner Scherz.

Daniel Geey is a sports lawyer and a partner at Sheridans, an author of Done Deals a book about football transfers, he has a blog and a podcast of his own and appears regularly on news and sports channels where he discusses the impact of the law on football. So I didn’t really want to talk about the law with Daniel as he does that a lot elsewhere. I’m actually more interested in unpicking the way he goes about personal branding and building a reputation, what a law career is really like, the common misconceptions and the mistakes we non lawyers make when talking about legal stuff in relation to sport. This podcast was recorded at Sheridan’s offices before the current lockdown. So.

Was sollen wir dazu sagen?

:) So genug Meta-Gequatsche.

It's extremely worrying to be writing about a videogame lawyer. If we get anything wrong about them then we could be sued for our Marioke Millions, it's why we've avoided having Phoenix Wright on the show. Luckily this week's Super-Special Guest, Tim Davies from Sheridans, set the bar (clever wording we know, cheers) for being a good lawyer so we took the opportunity to ask him lots of purely theoretical questions that we have to legally state we were not asking for a friend. We manage to cover loot boxes, found out which publishers are good for developers, and when can you legally shake a client. Ann is still a bit poorly, but this time it seems to be because she licked that Switch cartridge last week. Remember: All of Team OLL are professional trained cartridge lickers, things can go wrong. Please, don't try this at home. Do it outside of the home, as the Switch can be a portable console. Ann is away next week (this is unconnected to the cartridge licking), so if you fancy being an SSG that week (or any other Monday) then drop us a line at the usual address. As well as all that we had Simon coming to the studio all fresh after a hair cut, we came up with a great non-IP infringing idea, and Ste found out what the kids know about videogames. Cheerio!

The story behind Baileys, the blockbuster booze brand, is unexpectedly lo-fi. It was invented not in Ireland but in London’s Soho, with ingredients purchased on impulse from a corner shop. David Gluckman was one of the creative team who, by mixing whiskey and cream, unwittingly spawned a new sub-category of drinks - Irish chocolate cream liqueurs - which went on to sell billions of bottles. In this interview, he tells Olly Mann how a disparaging focus group, some drinking policemen and a Jewish restaurant all played their surprising part in alcohol history. David’s book, 'That Shit Will Never Sell', is available now at thatshitwillneversell.com, and includes the stories behind countless other drinks brands he's had a hand in, including Smirnoff Black Label, Tanqueray 10, Sheridans, and Purdeys. The booze theme continues in this week’s Zeitgeist, recorded at the Craft Beer Rising festival in London’s East End. Therein, Ollie Peart predicts the hipster trends about to go global: barrel-aged beer such as Adnams’ Both Barrels, and sour beer like Wild Beer Co’s Breakfast of Champignons. Meanwhile, Olly gets his lips around an Island Records Session IPA and attempts to name a new gin-and-tonic infused craft beer, with mixed success. This week’s Zeitgeist is sponsored by our friends at Beer52.com. For just £8, Modern Mann listeners can trial their excellent curated craft beer delivery subscription service. If you're a gearhead or geek of any sort, this is the episode for you - the Garage Hour gang has stacked this one to the rafters with a little bit of everything good, from Al Gore's carbon footprint (and his big fat footprint) to the Reverend Horton Heat, Hellcats and Pershings and Sheridans and the dreaded Tiger, plus the epic fail that is hybrid and electric cars when their government funding is missing. There's also Big Goverment's love of square pegs for round hols, small-town cop fails (coming to a city near you), battling cohosts, heaps of bad accents (and a few good ones), and tales of fails regarding Middle East fighters' inability to understand and/or learn modern Western combat skills (with the noted exception of the Afghanis - credit where credit's due). Then it's all martini bongs and bumper stickers and VW carb tuning. Must be the Garage Hour. Hostus Maximus is joined in the studio by Crag Maxwell, .45 Phil and (Almost) Agent Aya.
