It's Die Hard on a plane! Again! But a bigger plane than Passenger 57!This week on the show, Phil and Liam discuss Stuart Baird's popular 1996 action-thriller EXECUTIVE DECISION starring Kurt Russell and Steven Seagal* (*kinda). Is this one of the best ‘Die Hard on a blank' films of the era? The guys aim to find out! When fanatical terrorists take control of a 747 passenger plane heading from Athens, Greece to Washington D.C., Army intelligence consultant Dr. David Grant (Kurt Russell) informs the pentagon of his suspicion that the terrorists are planning to use a stolen nerve-agent known as DZ-5 to launch a massive attack on the Eastern seaboard. If Grant is correct, this means that the government may have to shoot the plane down before it reaches US airspace, so in a last-ditch attempt to avoid this scenario and save the lives of the 400 passengers on board, Grant reluctantly becomes part of a daring mission led by Special Forces Lt. Col Austin Travis (Steven Seagal), whereby a small strike team will use an experimental aircraft to board the 747 in mid-air, and attempt to take back control of the hijacked plane. This film is positively overflowing with ‘DIE HARD DNA', from the premise to the personnel, which includes the likes of producer Joel Silver, editor Frank J. Urioste, and actress Mary Ellen Trainor, amongst others. The guys discuss how this movie raises the stakes of the ‘Die Hard on a Plane' paradigm through the utilization of a unique selling point: the treacherous mid-air transfer of a counter-assault team that includes the likes of John Leguizamo, Joe Morton, BD Wong, Whip Hubley and Oliver Platt. Despite the film's slam-bang entertainment value and multi-cultural American cast, the guys still have to wrestle with its uncomfortable racial politics, in particular its portrayal of the fictional Middle-Eastern terrorist group who are led by legendary British thespian Sir David Suchet as ‘Nagi Hassan'. They also discuss the low-key brilliance of Halle Berry's performance as the courageous flight attendant Jean, Kurt Russell's ingenious chat-up lines, and the wider symbolic significance of a key character's death… The film's excellent ensemble cast makes for a highly competitive edition of the ‘Die Hard Oscars', followed by a fun ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz that will be of particular interest to fans of the late, great, perennially missed JT Walsh! Fasten your seatbelts folks! EXECUTIVE DECISION trailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_W4wp9_HYm4 At the time of release, EXECUTIVE DECISION is streaming on Tubi and is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple/iTunes, YouTube, Fandango and all the usual platforms. Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/die-hard-on-a-blank/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

We're celebrating one full year of being unlikely partners on the podcast beat by finally getting around to what we've been told is one of the all-time great buddy cop movies. Yes it's 1989's Tango & Cash, directed by a three-headed monster of directors on a deeply troubled production but overseen in post-production by Demolition Man editor Stuart Baird, and starring Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell, Jack Palance, Teri Hatcher, Brion James, James Hong, Michael J. Pollard, Robert Z'Dar, Lewis Arquette, Eddie Bunker and Clint Howard. No sense sugar-coating it, she doesn't want it to be a secret: Hayley hated this movie. But J Mo still makes the case for its not-so-guilty pleasures, and we reflect on a full year of doing the show. Of course, with the Oscars on Sunday we also take a quick minute to make our picks in the major categories, leading Justin to discover that while he's now seen 100 films from 2023, he's somehow missed almost all the Oscar movies. Embarrassing. We're going heavy on Oppenheimer. Big surprise.  Other works discussed in this episode include Dune: Part Two, Robin Hood: Men In Tights,  Spaceballs, The Princess Bride, The Emperor's New Groove, Beauty and the Beast,  Aladdin, The Lion King, The Voyeurs, Deep Water, Nocturne, The Perfection, Tenet, The Fast Franchise, First Blood, Rocky, Thief, The Rocketeer, Dick Tracy, Cobra, and Under Siege 2: Dark Territory. We'll be back next week to kick off a new campaign as we're joined by Briarpatch publisher and all-around good dude John Cameron to discuss the 1972 Robert Redford political satire The Candidate, which is currently available to watch in its entirety for free on YouTube. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Welcome back to Unclear and Present Danger! It's our first episode of the new year and we're here with a pretty fun movie — “Executive Decision,” directed by Stuart Baird, produced by Joel Silver and starring Kurt Russell, Halle Berry, John Leguizamo, Oliver Platt, Joe Morton, Steven Seagal and many others. Music by, as you might expect, Jerry Goldsmith. In “Executive Decision,” an intelligence analyst played by Russell and a group of commandos, led by Seagal, must infiltrate a passenger jet bound for Washington DC that has been hijacked by a terrorist group. On board the jet is enough nerve toxin to kill everyone on the eastern seaboard. Most of the film is a tense standoff on the airliner, as the commandos try to defuse the nerve bomb and take down the terrorists, while the terrorists move forward with their mission. The tagline for Executive Decision was “Five miles above the earth, an elite team of six men must make an air to air transfer, in order to save 400 lives on board a 747... and 40 million below.”You can find Executive Decision to rent or buy on iTunes and Amazon. Our next episode of the podcast will be on “The Substitute,” otherwise known as “Stand and Deliver if the teacher body-slammed the students.”Connor Lynch produced this episode. I love this film! I usually don't pick what we are watching, but I did for this episode. I have been wanting to record over Executive Decision since I started the podcast. I miss the 90s and I feel like that decade had the best thrillers, of course also so many other amazing things. I just now found out that this film was Stuart Baird's directorial debut, good for him, he did a fantastic job. If you don't know, the synopsis for this film is...when terrorists hijack a plane traveling from Greece to Washington, D.C., U.S. Army specialist David Grant (Kurt Russell) and Lt. Colonel Austin Travis (Steven Seagal) join forces to bring the plane to safety. While terrorists on board the plane claim they hijacked the plane to force the U.S. government to release their leader, who was captured by military forces, David and Austin discover that the plane is carrying a bomb full of nerve gas to be released on Washington, D.C. The film is available to rent on Prime for $2.99, of course you might be able to buy the DVD or Blu-ray for the same price. 747 Cocktail (cocktail-stack.netlify.app): Ingredients 1 oz Vodka 1 oz Roses sweetened lime juice 1 oz Cranberry Juice Sprite Cranberries or Limes Directions Fill a Collins glass with ice. In “Crimson Tide,” the crew of the USS Alabama, a nuclear submarine, is put on high alert as civil war breaks out in post-Soviet Russia. Military units loyal to the ultra-nationalist rebel have taken control of a nuclear missile installation and have threatened nuclear war if threatened. The USS Alabama is commanded by Captain Frank Ramsey, a career veteran of the submarine corps. He has chosen the cerebral and inexperienced Lieutenant Commander Ron Hunter to serve as his new executive officer. The two clash, eventually coming to an impasse over an Emergency Action Message order a missile launch against the Russian base. Ramsey wants to move forward while Hunter wants to delay action until the USS Alabama can clarify a second message received but interrupted as the crew confronted an enemy submarine. What follows is a confrontation, a mutiny, and a race to confirm the Alabama's true orders lest they fire the shot that starts a nuclear conflagration. The tagline for “Crimson Tide” was “Danger Runs Deep.”You can find “Crimson Tide” for rent or purchase on iTunes and Amazon. Our next episode will be on “Executive Decision,” directed by Stuart Baird and starring Kurt Russell, Halle Berry and John Leguizamo. Primitive Culture: A Star Trek History and Culture Podcast

Stuart Baird and Star Trek: Nemesis. The lowest-grossing of the Star Trek films, 2002’s outing by The Next Generation crew—Star Trek: Nemesis—was the first installment to open below number one at the box office. Losing out on the top spot to the Jennifer Lopez rom-com Maid in Manhattan may seem bad, the fourth TNG trip to the cinema performed so poorly that it proved to be their last. In fact, it killed off Star Trek’s silver screen prospects for more than half a decade. For years, many fans have blamed the failures of Nemesis—both commercially and critically—on its director, Stuart Baird. Better known for his work as an Academy Award-winning editor than for his three less lauded directorial outings, Baird apparently had minimal interest in the Star Trek franchise. This is said to have been true both before and, perhaps more surprisingly, during the making of the film. But is it fair to lay all the blame squarely at the feet of its director? In this episode of Primitive Culture, host Duncan Barrett is joined by Dr. Chris Nunn, a lecturer in film at the University of Greenwich in London, to take a fresh look at Nemesis in relation to Baird’s two other Hollywood movies: Executive Decision and U.S. Marshals. Will an examination of the director’s previous work change the longstanding view among Star Trek fans that Braid broke the odd-numbered curse for all the wrong reasons? Is it right to blame one man for a broth that had plenty of cooks around to spoil it? And, most importantly, is Nemesis really as bad as it’s cracked up to be? For all its significant deficits, we ponder Star Trek as a whole and still find nuggest of truth to be found.

In fact, there didn’t seem to be much motivation to make one. That is until John Logan met Brent Spiner and the two not only hit it off but also became intent on writing the next film for the franchise. Once they found the right story, everyone got on board and _Star Trek: Nemesis _was born. But was there an audience for another Star Trek film or were people worn out with franchise fatigue? And could the team deliver a film that warranted its existence? Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Star Trek series with the final of the Next Generation films, Stuart Baird’s 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis. We talk about our memories of the film and how those memories may have shifted on this latest viewing, and why we think that is. We look at Tom Hardy as a young Jean-Luc Picard and talk about his effectiveness with this portrayal. We get a bit nerdy as we discuss Romulan history, the Remans and where they fit in, and how all of this works together in context for the story presented here. We chat about the look of the film, relishing in the darkness presented here by cinematographer Jeffrey L. Kimball, and how it works well with Herman Zimmerman’s sets and Jerry Goldsmith’s score. We look at elements within the film that relate to the story of duality going on here, notably with Picard/Shinzon, Data/B-4 and the Romulans/Remans; and we ponder how well some of those choices work for us. And we take a look at how we feel about the TNG films and how they work for us as a body of work as compared with the films from the original crew. On the whole, we both had a much better time with this film than we’d remembered. We know it’s a much-maligned film, but we feel there’s more merit than we’d remembered. Stage Nine: A Podcast about the People Who Make Star Trek

Skyfall.   Star Trek: Nemesis featured that pairing of writer John Logan and director Stuart Baird. While that effort may not have yielded the finest results, the duo would re-team in a uniquely different capacity on the 007 movie, Skyfall. Logan once again wrote the script. But this time around, Baird was not behind the camera, but in the editing room. In this episode of Stage Nine, hosts John Mills and Mike Schindler take a look at Skyfall. We discuss the similarities to The Wrath of Khan, Baird's skills as an editor, and photography of the movie. In news, Mike reviews the new Ira Steven Behr production, Lucky, and we critique the new trailers for The Orville and Star Trek: Discovery. Live long and may the force be with you. See you in Mordor.
