Listen now and nominate a colleague who is making a similar impact in our field!Matthew K. Cashion, Jr., CIC, CRM (Matt), born and raised in Little Rock, was enrolled in the seventh grade at Pulaski Academy upon its inception by his parents. Before graduating in 1977, he attended Boys State and served as state president of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). His next phase of life found him following in the footsteps of his next older brother, Ted, graduating from Westminster College in Fulton, MO in 1981 with degrees in Economics & Business Administration and Accounting, and a fiancee, Susan Pippin. While at Westminster, he served as a member of the college's prestigious Skulls of Seven Society and is a Sigma Chi. After graduation, he joined the family agency alongside both brothers, Benson and Ted, and his father, Knight, and marrying his college sweetheart in the spring of 1982.Education and industry involvement was instilled in the agency fiber by Knight and continues as part of its DNA today. Soon after joining the agency, his father sent him to the Reliance Insurance Company's Agent Surety School in 1983. In 1986, Matt received his Certified Insurance Counselor Designation and completed the requirements for his Certified Risk Manager designation in 2004. Additionally, Knight gave him the opportunity to attend surety industry association meetings, where he found his business passion. With mentors from all over the countryproviding wind in his sails, Matt volunteered his way through the ranks of the National Association of Surety Bond Producers (NASBP), serving as a Regional Vice-President, Board Member, various committee memberships and chairmanships, and in 2003-2004 he served as the youngest national president. His lane through NASBP was via education. Attending its Level 2 surety school in 1986, he discovered a second passion; teaching. Returning to the association's school two years later, Matt was recently honored as the longest tenured instructor for NASBP clocking in 35 years of volunteer service to thousands of students from every state in the union as well as seven foreign countries. Further participation has included curriculum development and review of all levels of the association's educational offerings on contract surety, text editing of The Basic Bond Book, curriculum review for The Institutes' AFSB designation as well as recording select course introduction videos.Having just completed another term as chair of NASBP's Professional Development Committee, Matt is currently serving as co-chair of the Annual Meeting Program committee for a record sixth time.NASBP honored Matt with the President's Award in 2004, the John J. “Jack” Curtin Presidents Award for Distinguished Service in Surety Education in 2009, the Bruce T. Wallace Award for Career Contributions in 2013 (its highest award), and the John J. “Jack” Curtin Award again in 2023, becoming the only two time recipient.Matt also followed the leadership example set by his business partner, Jim Allbritton, serving as president of The Independent Insurance Agents of Arkansas (Big I - Arkansas) in 2015-2016. In 2021, Big I honored Matt with its highest award, the Allan Kennedy Memorial Award. An unintended consequence of volunteer service to various construction trade associations over the years has resulted in awards from the Associated Builders and Contractors of Arkansas (ABC) (2020 - Phillip Joiner Award for leadership) and Associated General Contractors of Arkansas (AGC) (2011 - Distinguished Service Award; 2021 - President's Award). After having served as a founding member of National AGC's Surety Industry Advisory Council and acting as its Outreach and Education Task Force Chair in 2001, AGC inducted Matt into its Consulting Contractors Council of America in 2009.Further involvement has included presentations and speaking opportunities all over the country to various groups ranging from the AICPA, the National Home Builders Association, local surety associations, trade associations (AGC, ABC, ASA, NAWIC), universities, engineers, and as a convention keynote speaker in Puerto Rico.Outside of the industry, Matt has offered his time to a variety of civic organizations including Pulaski Academy, Alzheimer's Arkansas Programs and Services, the Metropolitan YMCA, and the Heflin Youth Foundation. Additionally, he has received gubernatorial appointments to the Information Network of Arkansas and the Contractors Licensing Board, where he has served as Chair.Combining his passion for teaching and his greatest blessing, Matt and his wife have co-led various small groups at their church for over 30 years, most recently post college single adults. Pushing the comfort zone limits, he even became an ordained minister during the pandemic in order to perform a requested wedding service for a couple that had met in the class. His most recent passion and greatest joys are found in spending time with his six amazing grandchildren. His daughter Rachel and her husband Dr. David Rainwater, have three wonderful girls. His son, Matthew K. Cashion, III (Tripp) and his wife Kara, have two amazing girls and his only grandson (Matthew K. Cashion, IV aka Knight).

What are the top things women's initiatives can do to have a positive impact on the retention and advancement of women in the profession? As fierce advocates for women in law, associates Carolyn Blessing and Mehtap Cevher Conti note three core pillars of effective women's initiatives: programming, networking, and credentialing. These associations should foster authentic relationships with women and help them build their careers. Initiative leaders can also recruit and recommend other women for leadership roles, instilling confidence and community. By providing networking opportunities and mentorship in both internal and external women's initiatives, you can strengthen your firm and provide alternative perspectives. My sleep hasn't been great for years. I never have trouble falling asleep, but I wake after about 5 hours and then have trouble getting back to sleep.  I average about 7 hours of sleep a night, sometimes more, sometimes less. A few years back, after hearing author Matt Walker talk about his book, Why We Sleep on a podcast (watch his TED Talk), I went down the rabbit hole (not for the first time) on ways to improve my sleep. I'm happy to report, that it many ways, it has gotten better and my relationship to sleep has as well.  I write this as a preface for why the topic of this episode is so important to me. Sleep is important for mental and physical health, and for the quality of our work product, our relationships, and the broader work environment as we'll here from my guest, Professor Christopher Barnes. Christopher Barnes is a Professor of Management and the Michael G. Foster Endowed Professor of Management at the Foster School of Business. His recent research over the past few years focuses on sleep and its impact on work, ethics, decision making and work place engagement. His research has been featured in the Foster Business Magazine, Harvard Business Review, and a TEDx Talk I've long wanted to have Professor Barnes on the podcast, somewhat selfishly, because of my own interest in -- and challenges with sleep. In April of 2022, I invited him to present to faculty and staff as part of my work on the Health, Wellness and Professional Development Committee at Foster, and after that, I knew I what he had to say would be important to my listeners. We discussed how sleep hygiene can improve sleep: Stick to a schedule for wake time and bed time. Avoid alcohol, caffein and nicotine too close to be time, up to 12 hours prior for caffein. Use your bed for just two things, sleep and sex.  Don't stare into your smart device screen before bedtime, We briefly touch on his research on Blue-light filtering glasses, and we discussed one reputable supplier, Swanwick Sleep. I'll add: keep your bedroom dark and cool. Consider lowering the lighting in your house in the hour or two before bed Get bright  (preferably natural) light upon waking. For those of us in the PNW, you might want to get a "happy light" for these dark winter months, and use it for 20 minutes upon waking. (I have one from Verilux.) Some other important resources: If you suffer from insomnia or sleeplessness, the best experts now recommend avoiding sleeping pills. From my reading, the jury is out on Melatonin except at low doses for short periods of time (like around dealing with a time change). One reason why sedatives and melatonin aren't great is that while they will bring on sleep, they disrupt the best kind of sleep for your brain, deep wave sleep. I learned about this from Matt Walker, so if you want to learn more, follow the links in the first paragraph, or check out this three-part podcast.  The gold standard is now Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia, or CBT-I. You can even get apps and online programs to that deliver CBT-I therapy, some are actually FDA Approved. Chris mentioned Sleepio.  There is also a free email based program from Insomnia Coach that I found helpful.  There are some supplements that can help with sleep, but you should talk to your doctor about taking anything regularly for help with sleep, whether it is over the counter, or prescription. Chris also mentioned Arrianna Huffington's book, The Sleep Revolution (you can watch a talk she gave for Talks At Google, or read an interview with her), Dr. Nathaniel Watson (also at UW) and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. There is also a great recorded talk from the Whole U Speaker Series with Dr. Michael Vitiello on Getting a Good Night's Sleep.

Modern Agent Podcast - For New and Stuck Real Estate Agents

In this episode Rick gives a little humble brag about being ranked #27 in all Marketing podcasts in the month of January on Apple Podcasts, giving special thanks to Dustin Brohm and Phil Treadwell from Industry Syndicate. While reflecting on some recent victories (Being elected to the board of directors for Emerald Coast Association of Realtors, awarded Realtor of the Year for N Walton County, Vice-Chair of Professional Development Committee, having my best year yet as a solo Realtor just to name a few) I pondered...HOW?? How am I able to work perhaps 20-30 hrs a week, spend as much time as I want with my kids and family, attract some of the coolest clients to work with, and make as much money as upper-level executives??I came up with one big thing...TRUST!After asking for feedback from the clients I worked with in 2019 they listed my communication, my "genuine sense of care", hardworking, knowledgable AND TRUSTWORTHY!That hit home. Some of these people I have not known very long at all in person, but they were able to connect with me online, watch videos and connect with me before we met. They listened to my message and watched my consistent theme of caring for my city, my family, my fellow realtors, my local businesses...they KNEW that I would take care of them, they KNEW that they could TRUST ME, before they ever met me!Thanks for listening, please leave a rating, hit that subscribe button and share with anyone who may also get some benefit from the show! Thanks.

Rhiannon Samuel is an Albuquerque, New Mexico native, raised with a deep passion and pride for her community and its people. She is the Executive Director of Viante New Mexico, a new nonpartisan nonprofit who’s goal is to provide transparency for working New Mexicans to know who their elected officials are performing on their behalf. She was immediately drawn to the cause due to her discontentment with New Mexico’s repeatedly low standing on education, crime, and quality of life lists. She is a firm believer that in order for a democracy to work, one must be an educated voter – one who votes on principles and morals rather than by political party affiliation or name ID. Rhiannon graduated from University of New Mexico with a Degree in Communications and Religious Studies in 2014. Immediately after graduation she started her professional career with the City of Albuquerque where she served on Mayor Richard J. Berry Office’s executive team for several years as the Director of Communications. She was the first millennial director for the City of Albuquerque as well as the youngest director in the City’s recent history. She was awarded the Albuquerque Business First Forty Under 40 awards in 2019 at the age of 26. In her time outside of the office she is committed to bettering her community as a Parish Council Member at Albuquerque’s Our Lady of the Annunciation Parish, a Board Member of Albuquerque Involved, a Lovelace Women’s Hospitals Outreach Committee member, board member of the Albuquerque Community Foundation’s Future Fund, board member for the Saint Pius X High School Foundation, and a Professional Development Committee member for Young Professionals of Albuquerque. She was also a 2009 veteran volunteer for Amigos de las Americas. Rhiannon is a dedicated civil servant who is committed both personally and professionally to the betterment of her home – New Mexico. Viante New Mexico is a nonpartisan nonprofit that launched in 2018 to increase transparency around New Mexico's elected officials. As the founding Executive Director and sole full-time staff member, I have been tasked with making this vision a reality. My first task was to create a scoring methodology to examine which of our state senators and representatives are working across the political divide on common ground solutions to benefit all New Mexicans. Along with my board and community partners, I created a formula that has successfully eliminated partisanship. The formula is reflected in our scorecard that sheds light on how often legislators are actually present for important votes and how they perform on education, crime, and quality of life issues. I am looking forward to continuing the scorecard while also increasing access to unbiased, community driven information that will be useful to people in the November election.

As part of my Professional Development Committee duties I volunteer to monitor some of the classes that are offered at our local Realtor Association. Last week I had the pleasure to sit in on 2 days of GRI 100 classes being taught by Ms Patti Ketchum who is a Florida Realtors Instructor out of Tallahassee and someone with great experiences that really made the class fun. While I was in class and we were discussing the Code of Ethics, the document that separates us from common real estate agents, I began thinking..."How many Realtors have actually read the code of ethics, start to finish? Of those how many understand it? Of those how many have a solid handle on how it should be interpreted in our new social market? As we discussed the 17 articles and all of their Standards of Practice (SOP) I realized that Article 12 which deals mostly with the marketing side of things, when explained to the class there was no mention of social media, or online marketing. The examples were mostly about signs and postcards. So if it isn't being brought up in classes....are our agents, new and seasoned being made aware of the pitfalls and potentially harmful situations that may arise when using new systems. Are we taking the time to learn the contract and addenda being used in our markets? I mean really taking the time to learn the contracts? Do you take the time to sit down with your clients and walk them through the contract so that THEY understand what they are signing?I hear too often that we as Realtors are concerned about Zillow or some algorithm replacing us yet many of us are not willing to put in the time to make sure we are educated enough to provide the level of service our clients and customer want and deserve.Let's continue the discussion on the Modern Agent Podcast Facebook page.If you are enjoying the content and finding it helpful please subscribe wherever you listen and leave us a rating and review so others can find us easier.Modern Agent Podcast is proud to be a Founding Member of the Industry Syndicate Media Network, the first ever Media Network for the real estate industry. Family law and divorce can be a very difficult practice due to the amount of emotion and transition surrounding the client's life. The lawyers practicing in this area are directly responsible for the financial and emotional future of their clients. Because of the level of pressure involved, a successful family law firm depends on their paralegals to maintain organization of the firm and consistently complete projects and emails. But there is much more a paralegal can do to be a valuable part of a family law firm and increase the success of each case. What are some steps paralegals can take and how can the lawyers work best with their paralegals to benefit the firm? In this episode of The Paralegal Voice, Vicki Voisin interviews attorney Nick Rice and certified paralegal Andrea Schultz who discuss their success working together at Rice Law, a firm that specializes in family law. Rice comments on the level of success he is able to achieve in divorce cases due greatly in part to working with Schultz and other high-level achieving paralegals in his practice. He appreciates the skills she brings to each case including discovery, research, prep for hearings, and document review and analysis in addition to her attention to detail and organizational skills. With the legal knowledge she has, Schultz can provide the assistance to afford Rice increased time and energy to give to the case and clients. Schultz encourages paralegals working in family law to become certified and get advanced certification in family law, learn the legal basics and how to move through a case, stay educated about changes in state laws, and find a niche within the firm. Inevitably, lawyers and paralegals should work as a team from the beginning of the case to ease stress for the client. Nick Rice, formally known as George Lawrence Rice, IV, is a third generation attorney at Rice Law (Rice, Amundsen and Caperton, PLLC). He received his Bachelor's of Science from the University of Tennessee and his J.D. from the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. He has presented at many Continuing Legal Education lectures. Andrea Schultz is a certified paralegal at Rice Law. She graduated first in her class from Southwest Tennessee Community College with an Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies and was accepted into NALA's class of 2011-2012 LEAP Program. Andrea is a current member of Greater Memphis Paralegal Alliance (GMPA) and currently serves on NALA's Professional Development Committee. Special thanks to our sponsors, NALA and ServeNow.

Hard skills can be taught in school – things like speaking a foreign language, earning a degree or certificate, or the ability to type efficiently. Soft skills are more complicated to master. Examples of soft skills are critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and flexibility. A valedictorian may lack a necessary soft skill for a role, and this could be the deciding factor of hiring someone else. In this edition of The Paralegal Voice, host Vicki Voisin invites Ann L. Atkinson, ACP and Elizabeth H. Nellis, ACP to discuss the necessary soft skills and specific programs where paralegals can learn them. Atkinson is the president of the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA). She is an Advanced Certified Paralegal in the public finance department of her firm, Kutak Rock LLP. Bringing significant experience to the table, Atkinson has been a paralegal for more than thirty years. Nellis is an Advanced Certified Paralegal with NALA. Her work is concentrated in private practice and litigation. She is a co-founder of the Oklahoma Paralegal Association and is a member of the Professional Development Committee for NALA. Special thanks to our sponsors NALA and ServeNow.
