It was all lined up. The penultimate race weekend of the season at a track that isn't exactly condusive to overtakes. Lando just needed to outscore both his rivals by 2 points over the sprint and the Grand Prix to claim his first World Driver's crown, he was starting ahead of Max Verstappen in both races and he's had the measure of Oscar Piastri recently. It's a sure thing isn't it?This week on the podcast we look back at the race weekend where Lando Norris could well have lost the championship after McLaren took a gamble on strategy straight out the Ferrari playbook and managed to keep the 3 way title fight alive right up to the final race of the season next weekend in Abu Dhabi (and we all know how that's gone before don't we). How did they manage to get everything so wrong and be the only team not to pit under a safety car with 50 laps to go when there were compulsory stops after a maximum of 25 laps on a set of tyres? At least for the likes of us we've got another season where the finale isn't a dead rubber/lame duck and we're not going to know who the 2025 World Champion is until Sunday afternoon (unless something goes badly wrong in qualifying of course!) So of course we're speculating like nobody's business on that and on what the 2026 RedBull & VCARB lineups are going to be along with which one of the 5 prosepective drivers is going to be left without a seat (spoiler, it's Yuki) until someone messes up and gets demoted/fired! Obviously we've got a good few tangents as well as it wouldn't be an episode of 3L4W without them! And if you want to join in with the chat during the races (along with practice and qualifying) head over to our Discord where there's always a great crowd of people to watch along with. Victoria regalada a Verstappen, Piastri 2º y Lando 4º.

On a chaotic Sunday evening in late November 2025, Mississippi radio and internet personality Clay Edwards went live for an impromptu “special edition” of The Clay Edwards Show to react to the bombshell news that had just broken across college football: Lane Kiffin was leaving Ole Miss to become the next head coach at LSU. What followed was a two-and-a-half-hour, high-energy, profanity-laced, drink-spilling, keyboard-soaking monologue that perfectly captured the raw emotion sweeping through the state of Mississippi — especially among Ole Miss fans who felt betrayed and Mississippi State fans (like Clay) who couldn't decide whether to feel sorry for their rivals or simply enjoy the circus. The Scene Clay opened the stream already in mid-chaos: he'd just knocked over an energy drink and a cup of greens all over his desk and shorts while frantically tweaking audio settings. Undeterred, he powered through, declaring, “Metallica can play in thunder and lightning and rainstorms; Clay Edwards can keep streaming with greens and Red Bull all over his shorts.” Personal Context Clay, a lifelong Mississippi State fan, had attended his very first Egg Bowl just two days earlier on Black Friday. He'd gone primarily because he had a gut feeling it might be Lane Kiffin's final game in Oxford. Sitting in a cushy end-zone suite with his two Ole Miss-fan daughters (cheering in blue pom-poms while surrounded by mostly State fans), Clay snapped several now-viral photos of Kiffin on the sideline and doing his halftime interview. He jokingly captioned them at the time, “Could this be Lane Kiffin's last walk off the field as Ole Miss head coach?” Turns out his instinct was dead-on. The Departure: “He Dipped Out Like a Hoe”Clay didn't mince words: “Lane Kiffin has dipped out on Ole Miss.” He compared the spectacle of LSU sending not one but two private jets to Oxford to pick up Kiffin and his family to “a dude rolling up to your house in a Lamborghini, walking up to your front porch, and taking your woman while you just stand there and watch.” He then played video of angry Ole Miss fans gathering at the Oxford airport to scream profanities and flip the bird as Kiffin boarded the jet. Clay, a State fan with no dog in the fight, openly admitted, “I love this energy. This is big ‘f*** around and find out' energy. I'm kinda proud of y'all right now.” Ole Miss's Swift Counterpunch Within hours of Kiffin's departure becoming official, Ole Miss promoted defensive coordinator Pete Golding to full-time head coach (not interim) and, in a move Clay called “absolute big-dick energy,” offered to double the salary of every assistant coach who chose to stay in Oxford instead of following Kiffin to Baton Rouge. Clay repeatedly praised the move: “Two can play that game, Hoss. Screw you, Lane. Screw you, LSU. We're keeping our staff.” He acknowledged the hire gives “Zach Arnett vibes” (the Mississippi State DC who was promoted after Mike Leach's death, flopped spectacularly, then ended up… at Ole Miss), but said given the timing and the coaching carousel chaos, Ole Miss's hands were tied and the move made sense. Lane's Farewell Letter: “His Agent Wrote That Bullsh*t”Clay tore into Kiffin's official goodbye statement, especially the line about “prayer and family time” leading him to LSU and his claim that Ole Miss denied his request to coach the Rebels through the playoffs. “Really, Lane? You prayed about it? So if you go 8–4 next year and don't win a natty, was God wrong?” He scoffed at the idea that the players begged Kiffin to stay through the postseason: “Ain't no way in hell the team wanted you to dump them for the prettier girl and then still get a one-night stand through the playoffs. That letter was 100% written by his agent.” The Bigger Picture Despite being a State fan, Clay repeatedly said he was rooting for Ole Miss to make a Cinderella run in the 12-team playoff: “Y'all have a real shot to be America's Team now. Coach just told the world ‘you ain't good enough to win the big one with.' Go win the damn thing and shove it down his throat.” He argued a deep Ole Miss playoff run would light a fire under Mississippi State's own boosters: “A high tide lifts all ships. When your rival is rolling, it makes you sick of hearing about them and spend whatever it takes to beat them.” Final Verdict from Clay -Lane Kiffin is exactly who we thought he was: a brilliant football mind but a serial disloyal “hoe” who will leave anyone for a perceived bigger job (and Clay believes Alabama is still the one he really wants). -Ole Miss got done dirty in the optics, but responded like gangsters with the Golding hire and the “double your salary if you stay” offer. -The entire saga is the perfect illustration of everything wrong with the current coaching carousel and transfer-portal timing. -As a Mississippi State fan, he hates both Ole Miss and LSU… but he's pulling for the Rebels to win a couple playoff games “because it'll be the ultimate middle finger to Lane Train and it'll make our boosters open their wallets.” In classic Clay Edwards fashion, he closed the marathon stream covered in spilled drinks, laughing, and promising, “Man, what a day to be alive and love college football in the state of Mississippi.”

I'm having a tough time understanding the latest Liquid Death joke…does that mean I don't have a sense of humor? For those unfamiliar, the original inspiration (that eventually became Liquid Death) occurred in 2009…when Founder (CEO) Mike Cessario went to watch some friends perform with their band at the Warped Tour. And because the festival was sponsored by Monster Beverage…musicians would be on stage drinking out of branded cans. But instead of them being filled with the actual Monster Energy liquid, they'd been replaced with water to keep musicians hydrated during their sets. And that sparked Mike Cessario (an advertising agency creative at the time) to question “why aren't there more healthy products that still have funny, cool, irreverent branding?” Then, working on a public service ad campaign about the health risks of sugary energy drinks in 2014…he pitched the client on “doing a canned water stunt to poke fun at energy drinks.” While the client hated the idea, Mike Cessario spent the next roughly two years tinkering with the concept in his free time…eventually settling on what he called the “dumbest possible name for a super healthy, safest beverage possible.” But after potential investors passed on canned water concept, Mike Cessario (hoping to prove it was a viable brand), spent a few thousand dollars creating (and promoting) a short commercial that reframed water as the “deadliest stuff on earth” and responsible for way more deaths than energy drinks. So, if the constant impetus for Liquid Death came from “poking fun at energy drinks,” what could it mean when the brand just launched its own energy drink? With the tagline “feels like a cup of coffee, not an electric chair,” what you'll initially notice is these Liquid Death Sparkling Energy drinks are less loaded with caffeine than most new entrants and challenger brands. And I'd hate if my previous statement was misinterpreted though…because product details can matter! But we cannot overlook that most CPG marketers will proclaim, “our brand this or that,” but few companies ever get past simply attempting to sell undifferentiated products. Though, when you can sell a product that (oh by the way) also brings someone an extremely desirable emotion…you've done something truly special. So, particularly when a CPG brand (like Liquid Death) rightfully carries forward its product philosophy (and standards) that helped it become a breakout…details can (in fact) matter. However, while some CPG industry pundits proclaim, “the move appears to be a natural extension of its brand identity, as Liquid Death has long seemed well-suited for the energy drink category,” I've got some doubts…especially when reapplying some comments I made last April surrounding the launch of its “Death Dust” hydration supplement stick packs! So, if Mike Cessario is simply taking a snapshot of the U.S. energy drinks market from 2009, 2014, 2018, or right now…it would certainly show the same duopolistic market structure. However, just analyzing Red Bull and Monster Beverage would hardly explain much about which underlying drivers “recently have, currently are, and will undoubtedly continue” powering the remarkable categorical growth. So, this is where I continue to struggle…will the Liquid Death “irreverent marketing” approach resonate with more diverse energy drink consumers looking for authenticity and relatability in brand messaging?
We've officially entered the end-of-year zone... You know, the part where students are either bouncing off the walls or slumping over their desks like they've pulled three all-nighters in a row. And let's be honest, we're right there with them.In this week's episode, I'm unpacking a common (and deeply exhausting) classroom vibe: student apathy. That “ugh, why are we even here?” energy that rolls in hard during December. Whether your students are dragging their feet into class, doing the bare minimum (if anything), or slurping down Red Bulls the size of their heads — I've got you. We'll chat about:Why apathetic behaviours spike at the end of the year (spoiler: it's not just because they're lazy)How arousal states impact student engagementAnd most importantly? Some super practical strategies to upregulate energy in a way that doesn't leave you more drained than they are. What you'll learn:Why students are checked out in Term 4 (and why it's NOT a reflection of your teaching)The difference between low, optimal, and high arousal states — and how to use themMy favourite “shake it up” tricks for getting student energy backFun, fast ways to use novelty, movement, and talk-time to re-engage your classHow to maintain routines without making things boringHow your energy sets the tone — and what to do when you're the one running on fumesResources + Mentions:

Verstappen sê hulle strategie was perfek:

The Qatar Grand Prix blew the championship wide open, and with one race left, everything comes down to the fallout from one moment: the Lap 7 Safety Car. We break down how that decision and the chaos that followed may have cost Oscar Piastri the entire championship. We dive deep into the Lando vs Oscar tension, McLaren's strategy roulette, and whether team orders should have been used. Plus: how Max Verstappen managed to turn Qatar into a massive advantage heading into the final round. We also unpack the penalties, the tyre drama, and the midfield surprises that no one saw coming. And of course a very big kudos to Carlos Sainz. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In a shock reversal of the usual format, this episode of F1 Explains starts with a question that YOU have to answer. It's about an engine company with an incredible winning record in Formula 1. Any guesses? For decades, Ford won in Formula 1. Their engines powered drivers and teams to World Championships. In 2026, the company will return to the grid, partnering with Red Bull on a new F1 engine project. Christian speaks to Mark Rushbrook, Ford Global Director of Racing, to find out how the partnership with Red Bull will work, what knowledge Ford can use to help Red Bull hit the ground running and how F1 differs from Ford's other racing teams. Plus we explain why Red Bull are building their own power unit instead of continuing to buy one from another team, and how the different approaches could affect every team's success in 2026 and beyond. This week on Winging It, the boys relive the Strasbourg away day where Palace's finishing let them down but the vibes certainly didn't. Terence, Albert and Hesketh are joined by Neil, Sergio, Grant and Chris to unpack everything from French onion soup to Alan Lee's legend status. The result on the pitch wasn't what we hoped for but the people, the stories and the chaos made it a trip to remember. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
There's a lot of suspense swirling around Formula 1 this week - especially for kiwi driver Liam Lawson. Red Bull is about to lock in its 2026 line-up, and Lawson is still waiting to find out whether he's part of their future. Red Bull will make the announcement after Qatar Grand Prix this weekend, which I'm sure many New Zealanders will be watching keenly. RNZ Senior Sport Journalist Barry Guy joins us spoke to Jesse. I'm reposting one of my favorite founder stories. If you listened to this first time I recommend listening again. If you missed this before, you're about to hear one of the wildest founder stories of all time. A few surprising things I learned from reading about Dietrich Mateschitz, founder of Red Bull: 1. He started the company when he was 41 years old. 2. He was making $500 to $800 million a year and his 49% stake is worth $20 to $30 billion. 3. He still prioritized fitness deep into his 70s and liked driving fast, piloting his planes, and competing in off-road motorcycle races. 4. The company was started with just $500,000 from Mateschitz and $500,000 from his partner. Outside of a small loan from a local bank all other expansion was funded by profits. 5. The company reached profitability in its 3rd year and has been profitable every year since. (33 years and counting) 6. He took no dividends for the first 13 years and reinvested all profits into growth instead 7. He viewed Red Bull as a “marketing conglomerate” and tried to outsource everything else 8. He was intensely private. When an author tried to interview his elderly mother for an unauthorized biography. Mateschitz threatened to have his knee caps broken. He said it would only cost $500 to hire a Russian to do the job. 9. There are no biographies written in English about Mateschitz. 10. He believed a handshake agreement among gentlemen was sufficient and regularly did business with trusted partners with no written contract. 11. He bought a popular Austrian magazine just so he wouldn't appear in it. 12. He was universally described by former employees as a gentleman, charismatic, and fiercely loyal. 13. He didn't like spending time socializing. He said: “I don't believe in 50 friends. I believe in a smaller number. Nor do I care about society events. It's the most senseless use of time. When I do go out, from time to time, it's just to convince myself again that I'm not missing a lot." 14. He owned a private island in Fiji and said he was attracted to having his own independent state. His state would have the shortest set of laws in the world: “The rules are simple: Nobody tells you what you have to do — only what you don't have to do.” 15. When he was asked if he was going to retire he said “I'm having more fun than ever.” 16. He refused to sell Red Bull or take it public and worked on it until he died.
