Bible Reading: Psalms 27:7-10; 116:1-9When Maggie stepped into the batter's box, she already had two strikes. One more would put her on the bench. She glanced at the stands. Her foster mom wasn't there. Maggie sighed. Her team chanted, "Two-strike hitter, don't be a quitter!" The pitch came in fast, and Maggie connected, sending the softball past the outfield. Softball took her mind off everything. When she got back home, her social worker was out front holding a bag with all Maggie's belongings. Oh no, I forgot! I'm moving today. She forced her feet to keep walking. Ever since Dad died, it was one foster home after another.After several months in her new house, Maggie saw a Bible lying open on her foster mom's desk. "Psalm 27 says that even if your mother and father are gone, the Lord will care for you. The Lord is taking care of you, Maggie. He sent you here, and we love you. We prayed for you before you came--and we're praying for your mom too. We don't know what she'll do. But we know what Jesus will do.""He'll hear my voice?" "Yes, He always hears you. My only family heirloom is my Dad's 1960s stereo console he had at boarding school. "I do."  57 years ago, Mom spoke those words while holding Dad's hands. I thought of their commitment to one another last week as I was seated across from her at breakfast. It was their 57th wedding anniversary. And her first without him. I expected our time together to be a bit downtrodden, quiet, sad. After all, how do you celebrate the thing you built your life around when the person you built it with is no longer there? But as we sipped a mimosa (Hey, it was their anniversary and I wasn't going to have Mom celebrate by herself!), it was surprising that Mom wasn't sad, wasn't morose, wasn't bitter. She was at peace. Unlike the annoying barn swallows occupying my porch, my son has flown from the nest never to return. He's spread his wings, experienced the freedom and independence that comes with that stage of life, and he is perfectly content to navigate those waters on his own. He knows full well that we were just a phone call away and less than an hour away if we are needed, and that he can reach out to us for any need he has. I was not ready for this. It bummed me out and made me sad. One day it was hitting me especially hard. I was super proud of him and his independent spirit, but I was missing my boy. In that moment of reflection, I realized that I'd done the same thing when I was his age. Tom, age seven, admired his dad’s shiny trophies from school track events sitting on a shelf. He thought, I want one of those for my bedroom. So he asked, “Dad, can I have one of your trophies?” The man surprisingly answered, “No, Tom, those are mine. I earned them, and you can earn your own.” Then they made a plan that if he ran around the block in a certain amount of time (he knew his son could do it), he would give him a trophy of his own. Tom practiced with his dad’s guidance, and a week later his dad cheered him on as ran the race in time. Tom learned lessons in self-discipline and hard work, and his dad congratulated him with an award. Proverbs 1:8 encourages children to “listen . . . to your father’s instruction.” Tom’s dad also taught him about running the race of life with Jesus and listening to His leading. He instructed him about choosing “what is right and just and fair,” as the father in Proverbs did (v. 3). A father’s teachings are valuable: “a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck” (v. 9). You may not have a father to instruct you in your race with Christ. But God can lead you to a mentor who can pass along their wisdom. Or perhaps God is calling you to mentor someone. He’ll give you guidance as you’re active with others in running the race.

In the middle of the their conversation, we see a guy walking his Dalmatian. Danielle decides to go to the coffee shop and orders her fav: a tall caramel machinate sugar free with oat milk, no whip, and has a totally normal, real human conversation with the owner. She goes to enjoy her drink in the park in the freezing cold. She sets her drink down to take a call from her mom and she notices that a dog is drinking her drink. The man apologizes but she doesn't want any part of it.But when she's goes to the coffee shop the next day and orders her sugar free caramel macchiato with oat milk, no whip, he comes right up.  Turns out, he's the guy she's supposed to be meeting with. His name is Trevor but goes by TJ and he is Matt's best friend. They start working together to plan stuff, like cake taste testing, floral arrangements, stuff that the wedding party is in charge of. She invites him over to meet her old school Dad and Dad falls in love with him. And he takes her to the fire department to show her all of the fire stuff. But then he gets a call so has to leave.Turns out, the call is for her mom. She "fell down" while doing the dishes. I guess she was dehydrated. She talks to her mom about how she's not sure about really giving Trevor a chance but mom is like your dad likes him, we can't let this opportunity pass. Everything is good again until she gets a call - the baker who was making cupcakes for the wedding is in labor. So she and Trevor go to the bakery to make 200 cupcakes. And they have a blast until a girl shows up and says she's Trevor's girlfriend. Trevor doesn't correct her. She's real sad. Luckily, there's a random old guy on a bench who gives her some advice. Trevor shows up and explains - he actually never did break up with this girl but he thought they broke up cuz she moved. Which is good enough for her. They go to walk in the freezing cold and kiss.
