In this episode, I sit down with Sadhana Rai, whose transformative journey from a high-powered commercial disputes lawyer to a devoted pro bono advocate is both inspiring and heart-rending. Sadhana shares her early life experiences in a modest family, where the seeds of justice and advocacy were planted. Her story is a poignant reminder of the power of introspection and the courage it takes to pursue a path that truly feeds the soul, not just the status quo. Through the lens of some of her most challenging and impactful cases, Sadhana opens up about the realities of working with underprivileged clients who have altered her view of justice and humanity. Each case, each client, each story brings with it a heavy toll but also a profound lesson in resilience and empathy. Sadhana's recounting of these experiences invites us to reflect on the deeper implications of inequality and our role in addressing it. This episode is not just a narrative of legal battles; it's a call to awaken to the struggles and injustices around us. Sadhana challenges each of us to not only recognize our shared humanity but to act on it, fostering a society that values compassion and justice equally. Her journey and the lessons she imparts are a powerful testament to the impact one person can have when they choose to make a difference where it truly counts. 00:00 Introduction 00:35 Get to Know Sadhana Rai 02:35 Sadhana's Upbringing & Background 06:39 Leaving a Prestigious Job & Discovering Pro Bono Work 10:30 Navigating Challenges as a Female Lawyer 14:53 The Hardships in the Legal Profession 21:00 Diving into Criminal Law and Pro Bono Work 27:37 A Heartbreaking Dive into the Chin Swee Road Case 33:49 Going Above & Beyond as Community Lawyers 36:23 The Emotional Toll of Being a Lawyer 39:14 Behind the Story of an Abandoned Dog 42:44 A Fight for Innocence & the Reconciliation of a Family 45:12 Misconceptions of Pro Bono Lawyers 47:53 Sadhana's Most Valuable Lessons 50:23 The Important Role We All Play 54:03 Final Reflections Follow Rachel here: https://www.instagram.com/ms_rach/ Follow Pro Bono SG here: https://www.instagram.com/probonosg/ Volunteer here: https://form.jotform.com/230180689949066 Donate here: https://bit.ly/3XqV4YX

In today's episode, we're getting (painfully) real. We felt the need, after seeing a flood of negativity in online STR spaces, to bring this all back to its foundation – why do we work in hospitality, anyway? What does it mean to truly serve the guest? And, how can we go above and beyond in that mission? As open and honest as ever, we recount some educational examples from our recent, and not so recent, past – including breakdowns in delivery of service, frustrating lapses in communication, a broken couch, missing knives, and so much more. The truth is, guest satisfaction is our top priority. This industry, your business, and ours – is built on that very fact. Sometimes it's helpful to unplug the daily/weekly machine of how and when we do things to reverse engineer our “why” – and rededicate ourselves to the things that really matter. What's in a 5-star review? What is your problem and what isn't? What is the baseline, for the guest and for us? And, how are they different? These important questions, and more, are addressed today. We hope tuning in inspires you to do some soul searching of your own, too, to reignite the flame of hospitality excellence that got you into this work in the first place.(00:01:22) #STRShareSunday: @BeachnBoard(00:03:10) Why Do We Work in Hospitality?(00:06:29) STR & Service-Based Business Stories to Learn From(00:18:07) Tips for Going Above & Beyond for Your Airbnb Guests(00:29:25) Stop the Bashing: STR Guest Satisfaction is #1Resources:• Click here for full show notes• #STRShareSunday: @BeachnBoard • Video: Airbnb Host: No Refund and Gamble Bad Review? • Airbnb Essentials Checklist: hostchecklist.comThanks for Visiting is produced by Crate Media.Mentioned in this episode:Superhog | Visit superhog.com/thanks-for-visiting and book your FREE demo today!Host Checklist | Grab our Airbnb Essentials Checklist and make stocking your Airbnb a breeze – we've got all your hosting needs covered!Hosting Handbook | Get everything you need to fast track your way to Superhost at thanksforvisiting.com/handbook

Going Above and Beyond for King Jesus Jesus goes from a person's head to their feet in today's passage to illustrate how He calls believers to go above and beyond the law so they can impact others with the gospel! Read Matt. 5:38-42 Going Above and Beyond for King Jesus Let's Pray! The law teaches that punishment should fit the crime V. 38 Jesus is referring to the Law of Retribution spoken of in places like Ex. 21:24, Lev. 24:20, and Deut. 19:21. The Law of Retribution was never meant to sanction personal retaliation, but gave guidance to leaders to ensure both that justice was done and that punishments fit crimes. He shall confess his sin that he has committed. And he shall make full restitution for his wrong, adding a fifth to it, and giving it to him to whom he did wrong. -Numbers 5:7 Jesus taught believers to go beyond the law for gospel impact V. 39a Everything Jesus taught and did in Matthew's gospel is building toward His giving us the Great Commission in Matthew 28. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in Heaven and earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” -Matt. 28:16-20 Why did the first Christians take the gospel even to ‘evil' people who opposed them? They knew that they too had once been ‘evil' sinners, opponents of God. “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.” -Luke 11:13 Non-believers don't have the Holy Spirit living inside them – all they have is the old sin nature, which like gravity pulls them back toward carnal actions. Lost people act lost because they are lost. What is Jesus calling us to do? Show the same kindness to others God has shown to us! God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance. -Romans 2:4b 3 ways believers go beyond the law V. 39b-42 Believers are not to react to every insult (v. 39b) Turning the other cheek DOES NOT MEAN you would be doing the right thing if you stood and did nothing while your family or neighbor or even a stranger was attacked, or that Christians should decline military service. Turning the other cheek DOES mean you are not personally looking to answer every insult with an insult, perpetuating a conflict. Believers are willing to give the shirt off their back (v. 40) Jesus here is telling believers to extend the patience they would show a brother to non-brothers also, even thought it was underserved. They had received underserved grace, they were to show it to others. To have lawsuits at all with one another is already a defeat for you. Why not rather suffer wrong? Why not rather be defrauded? -1 Cor. 6:7 This does not mean believers should not set boundaries to avoid harassment, abuse, and excessive financial loss. It does mean the default setting of believers is to be “for people” and try to work things out. Believers are willing to go many miles out of their way (v. 41) Why does Jesus call believers to ‘go the extra mile?' Because it's in the second mile when others start believing there is something to your faith. Now here's where we need wisdom – because the same Paul who was willing to endure insults for the gospel also at times DID utilize his citizenship rights to avoid further mistreatment (Acts 16:35ff). When non-Christians see Christians act and react in ways that are above and beyond what's expected, and what they themselves don't have the spiritual power to do, they want what we have and ask about Jesus. Are you prepared to give to help others the way Jesus gave to help you?
Going Above and Beyond Like King Jesus For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall be saved by His life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. -Romans 5:10-11 Matthew 5:43-48 Going Above and Beyond LIKE King Jesus This is the last of the 6 times Jesus says, “You have heard it said, but I say to you.” Interestingly, it is the first of the specific things this sermon says Christians will be rewarded for, with 4 more coming in chapter 6. The command they had corrupted V. 43 You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord. -Lev. 19:17-18 The words “hate your enemy” were not in the Old Testament. But that is how many of them had been taught to process Leviticus 19:18 by their leaders – Love your JEWISH neighbors, but hate your PAGAN enemies. When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. -Lev. 19:33-34 The command to love includes loving your enemies V. 44 The word love occurs 640 times in the Bible (227 times in the NT). The word for love here is Agapeo (G25), which occurs in 110 verses. It means to feel and exhibit esteem and goodwill to a person, to prize and delight in a thing. Here Jesus commands Agape love for all people, even enemies. The word translated love is agape, which means a strong commitment of goodwill towards another regardless of whether or not they deserve it. -African Study Bible If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink, for you will heap burning coals on his head, and the LORD will reward you. -Proverbs 25:21-22 Reasons we are to love our enemies V. 45-48 We love our enemies not because of who they are but because of who God is (v 45) “Loving enemies requires such an unnatural response that obeying it proves who belongs to God.” -David Jeremiah We love our enemies because of who we once were, because of who we are now in Christ, and who they can become if they turn to Christ (v. 46-47) If you who call yourself Christians still practice “tribal love” for your own rather than love for people of “all tribes,” there is no practical difference that shows the eternal difference Jesus Christ makes. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. -Galatians 2:20 We love our enemies because doing so leads to growth and reward (v 48) The word for perfect is teleios (G5046), which occurs in 17 New Testament verses – it can be translated perfect, complete, mature, having reached its end, fulfilled its purpose. The fact is you and I won't reach full ‘perfection' until we are in Heaven, but our spiritual sights must be set on nothing less than living like Jesus by faith, striving to fulfill our God-given purpose through the power of the Holy Spirit. Here Jesus introduces the word reward back into the mix, as He did back in verse 12 – the sermon on the mount has the first reference to reward in the New Testament, and the most references to reward in the N.T. Jesus spoke these words to call believers living in this age of grace, this church age, to live like He lived, and to love like He loved! A new standard for reward – loving like Jesus loved, even your enemies!

Introduction - Joe Galindo a Windermere coach is hosting the Windermere Coaching Minute podcast. - His guest today is Travis Stewart, an 18-year veteran in the Puget Sound real estate market. Travis has been with Windermere Real Estate for 11 years. Travis' Background - After high school, Travis did professional wakeboarding for 2 years then returned home in 2004 to figure out his career path. - He started working in the appraisal business in 2005 after meeting some contacts through college. - Travis got experience quickly by shadowing experienced appraisers, learning how to evaluate home values. He toured over 1,800 homes in 7 years as an appraiser trainee and certified appraiser. - The appraisal work gave him insight into how different factors like school zones, upgrades, condition etc impact property value. It also taught him the difference between cost and value. - He saw the market shift from hot seller's market to increased refinancing during the 2008 housing crisis. His role changed from delivering good news about equity to being the bearer of bad news about lower appraisals. Learning from His Mom - Travis initially didn't want to work with his mom when starting in real estate sales but saw the value in her focus on relationships and genuine care for clients. - She treats clients like close friends, not just transactions. This was different than Travis' dad who was in car sales and had customers. - His mom fulfills the need of the client in front of her in that moment, not worrying about the outcome. Travis learned the power of relationships in real estate from her. Going Above and Beyond - Travis shares a story about spending hours digging through bushes to find a buried septic tank lid for clients selling a home. He leveraged his inspection knowledge to save the deal. This exemplifies fulfilling client's needs. Transaction Types - There are relational transactions with people you know well vs. transactional deals with less connection. Open houses can lead to great relational clients. Seeing Homes - It's very valuable for agents to tour homes to understand pricing, see different neighborhoods, observe layouts and condition. Virtual tours don't replace onsite experience. Kitchen Remodels - Travis notes kitchen upgrades don't always increase value equal to their cost. Buyers may not like the finishes or see the same value. Gifts from Appraising - His appraisal experience taught Travis about depreciation over time. A remodel done years ago likely lost some value relative to its initial cost. Working with Family - After appraising and title work, Travis joined his mom in real estate sales. She needed help expanding her business and exiting in the future. - He hesitated to work with her at first but now sees the value in focusing on client relationships vs. transactions. Referral Power - Travis shares an example of past clients who moved to Texas but still refer Seattle-area friends to him years later. Ongoing communication maintains those referral relationships. Client Events - He hosts an annual holiday party with Santa for over 100 clients as a thank you and community builder. People look forward to it each year. - They also do smaller events like corn mazes and wakeboarding at his home to stay connected. Ongoing Communication - Travis stressed the importance of staying in touch with clients year-round through calls, texts, stopping by, etc. This maintains the relationships. Gifting Strategy - He is strategic in gifting clients he knows well vs. his entire database. Does personal gifts with handwritten notes. - Travis has used services like ClientGiant but found generic gifts weren't received as well. He customizes based on the client. Action Steps - Reach out to Travis with any questions at his email or website. - Implement similar strategies of relationships, events, and gifts into your business. From post-completion errors to forgetfulness, Melina demonstrates how anticipating these errors can lead to improved decision-making and behavior. Throughout the episode, she provides valuable insights and practical strategies for businesses and individuals to leverage the power of nudges and choice architecture. So, if you're interested in enhancing your decision-making skills and understanding the psychology behind our choices, this episode of The Brainy Business is a must-listen. Get ready to gain valuable knowledge and unlock the secrets to better decision-making! In this episode, you will: Understand the impact of errors in decision-making to improve your choices. Harness the power of choice architecture to shape your decisions and outcomes. Discover effective nudges that can influence behavior and guide decision-making. Enhance the effectiveness of nudges by incorporating sensory cues. Create consistency in your routines and habits to optimize your decision-making process. Show Notes: 00:00:00 - Introduction, Melina introduces the episode, which focuses on the E in Nudges - Expect Error. She explains that humans make errors in judgment and decision-making all the time, and emphasizes the importance of designing interventions to support behavior. 00:03:32 - Importance of Expecting Error Melina discusses the importance of expecting errors in decision-making and how it is the reason why nudges and choice architecture exist. She highlights that humans are not perfect, unlike the fictitious species of econs in traditional economic models, and provides examples of errors we can expect in everyday life. 00:07:53 - Post-completion Error Melina explains the concept of post-completion error, where we mentally check off a task as done even if it is only partially completed. She shares her personal example of forgetting to move the laundry from the washer to the dryer. Melina also mentions the importance of incorporating all the senses when designing nudges to prevent errors. 00:10:22 - Consistency and Medication Errors Melina discusses the importance of consistency in preventing errors, using the example of medication adherence. She explains how taking medication daily and at a consistent time can help reduce the likelihood of forgetting. Melina also mentions the use of placebo weeks in birth control pills and the recommendation to take weekly medication on Sundays. 00:15:22 - The Power of Strategic Foresight Strategic foresight allows businesses to anticipate and solve errors before they happen, creating a strong reputation for problem-solving and customer service. 00:16:44 - Empowering Employees to Make It Right Giving employees the authority to rectify mistakes on the spot, such as offering compensation or going above and beyond, creates a culture of exceptional customer service. 00:18:07 - Going Above and Beyond The Ritz Carlton is a prime example of a company that empowers its staff to do whatever it takes to make things right for customers, creating a sense of trust and loyalty. 00:20:36 - Anticipating Errors By understanding the busy and overwhelmed state of customers and staff, businesses can implement nudges to help prevent errors and alleviate stress. 00:23:34 - Adding Value to Processes By considering the needs and potential errors of customers and staff, businesses can enhance processes by adding helpful features, such as including batteries or recommended add-ons with products. 00:31:42 - Gmail's Nudge Feature Gmail's nudge feature helps users stay on top of their emails by putting important emails back at the top of the inbox after a few days of inactivity. This nudge includes a message in a different color text, like orange, that prompts the user to follow up on the email. 00:32:41 - Hot State and Cold State Understanding the concept of a hot state and a cold state is essential in behavioral economics. In a hot state, people are more likely to make impulsive decisions and struggle to stick to commitments they made in a cold state. Strategies like self-exclusion lists for gamblers and using Dysulfram for alcoholics can help individuals stay on track even when in a hot state. 00:34:14 - Precommitment and Save More Tomorrow Precommitment strategies, like the Save More Tomorrow program, can help individuals increase their commitment to certain behaviors. For example, asking individuals to commit a percentage of their future raises to go directly into their retirement savings has led to significant increases in contributions over time. 00:35:45 - Consistency and Staying Top of Mind Consistency is crucial in business to stay top of mind with customers. Drip campaigns and regular content updates, such as blogs, podcasts, and newsletters, help remind customers of their initial interest and keep the brand in their routine. 00:37:38 - Conclusion, Melina's top insights from the conversation. With a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, he entered The George Washington University to seek a master of business administration degree in marketing and advertising. Tweetable Quotes: “We are so insignificant human beings, we really are, we should have no ego whatsoever, we should learn. Because what's that ego for? You know, and the big thing is when we take the ego out of ourselves, and we don't point outside, we should always point inside, you know, where it goes when we talk, you know, this is not right to that's not right, or, I'm not going to do this because but look at that three fingers are coming at us.” - Vinney Chopra “God made it that way. When we point to somebody, it's not them, it's us three times more.” - Vinney Chopra

Brandee Stephens, a mortgage broker with Answer Home Loans, has become a top producer by helping the borrowers who are turned away the most. A majority of her clients are not credit-ready when they come to her so she works with them to improve their credit and get them ready to be homeowners. As a Mortgage Broker in the Wholesale Channel, Brandee believes it to be her obligation to educate borrowers and help those that retail operations and banks would turn away. Once she has those borrowers, she goes above and beyond for them. When a borrower didn't have or know how to obtain a Verification of Employment, Brandee went as far as driving directly to their multiple past employers and getting their VOE herself. Brandee does not come from a long line of homeowners. Her mother did not become a homeowner until she was almost 40. If it was not for her younger brother, who bought a home at 19, she may never have become a homeowner herself. During the process of buying her first home in the 90s, her interest rate jumped 1% before signing without warning. While buying her second home, her broker locked her into an adjustable-rate mortgage without explaining the difference to her. That is when she knew she could offer a better service. She joined the mortgage industry working at retail banks for 12 years until she made the jump to the broker side in June 2019. As a Broker, Brandee focuses on helping educate borrowers on the homebuying process. Instead of turning away credit-bruised clients, Brandee works to create a financial plan to help get their credit ready within six to nine months. As part of this effort, Brandee has made it a focus to help Hispanic and Latino borrowers. She recently hired a fully-licensed originator who speaks Spanish to assist her with the effort as well. Once Brandee has started helping those borrowers repair their credit, she goes above and beyond to provide them the best possible service, and that starts with a customer service mindset. Part of that service is Brandee and her team helping borrowers get their credit in a place where they can purchase a home. They personalize a plan for each borrower and follow up every month to see how the process is going, but it doesn't just stop there. Brandee once helped a borrower who had been unemployed for 10 years because of a serious brain injury. She broke down the borrower's career history, year by year, job by job, even going so far as to reach out to the past employers herself. Nothing was going to stop Brandee from doing right by her borrower. “It's not a job, we're really changing people's lives,” she says. Brandee's parting advice: Find what gets you up every morning. You can either have a job that forces you to get up every morning or a job that gives you a reason to get up every morning. “Nobody has to tell me to get up and tell me how I'm going to help the next person,” she said. Once you find that motivation, hire people who share it. You can teach people many things, but you cannot teach someone to be passionate about your “Why”. They either are or they aren't. The September issue of Parks & Recreation magazine is out now, and on this month’s bonus episode, we’re diving deeper into the cover story, “Going Above and Beyond,” by NRPA’s executive editor, Vitisia Paynich. The story highlights how the COVID-19 pandemic and the fight for racial equity compelled the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks to mobilize and take action in order to continue to serve its community. On today’s episode, we’re honored to be joined by the director of Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks and former NRPA board member, Roslyn Johnson, CPRP. Roslyn recently began her role as director in February of this year, which was a challenging time to begin any new venture. Johnson is also the first woman to ever lead the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks in this role, which is a huge deal! We talk with Johnson about the challenges that came along with transitioning into a new role in a new department at the very beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic taking hold in the U.S., as well as how her department is supporting the community in Baltimore County throughout the pandemic and the movement for racial justice and equity. Tune in to the full episode below to learn: 6:04: How the department made sure social equity was considered when closing the areas or infrastructure it managed due to COVID-19. 12:38: How Johnson’s staff has served over a million meals since March 23. 20:37: How the department is working with the local school system to ensure kids have educational opportunities due to challenges with distance learning. 29:57: How Johnson helped facilitate tough conversations among her staff in the wake of the murder of George Floyd — among many other tragic instances of racism. 44:44: How the department is supporting protests taking place in their parks, as well as working with the police to make sure everyone remains safe during the protests. 49:45: How the “All Parks for All People” initiative and a $35 million bond referendum are helping expand equity in parks in Baltimore County, and more!
