Welcome back to Pushing the Limits for another insightful episode. Today, we dive into Kaatsu Training with Sandy Nelson, exploring how this blood flow restriction technique boosts bone density, muscle growth, and brain health for older adults and athletes. Key Points: Research suggests Kaatsu Training helps older adults with osteopenia by improving bone density. It seems likely that Kaatsu Training increases IGF-1 and BDNF, supporting muscle and brain health. The evidence leans toward Kaatsu Training offering neuroprotection, likely via BDNF. Kaatsu Training appears to enhance athlete performance, aiding recovery and strength. What is Kaatsu Training? Kaatsu Training, also known as Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training, is a method where special bands partially restrict blood flow to the limbs during exercise. This creates a hypoxic environment in the muscles, promoting growth and strength with lighter loads. It was developed in Japan by Dr. Yoshiaki Sato and is used for both rehabilitation and performance enhancement. Benefits for Older Adults and Osteopenia For older adults, Kaatsu Training can help combat osteopenia, a condition with low bone density. Studies suggest it can maintain or increase bone density, reducing fracture risk and supporting mobility, especially for those with joint issues like osteoarthritis. Its low-impact nature makes it suitable, allowing strength gains without excessive joint stress. Impact on IGF-1, BDNF, and Neuroprotection Research indicates Kaatsu Training increases Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), vital for muscle and bone health, and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), important for brain health. This likely contributes to neuroprotection, potentially reducing neurodegenerative disease risk by supporting cognitive function. Benefits for Athletes For athletes, Kaatsu Training can enhance performance by improving muscle strength and hypertrophy with lighter weights. It can also aid recovery by promoting growth hormones, reducing muscle damage, and allowing more frequent, intense training, benefiting Olympians and professional athletes. Hyperbaric oxygen chambers have long been used for acute issues such as strokes and brain injuries—but can they be used for chronic conditions as well? This week, I'm joined by Dr. Scott Sherr, an internal medicine physician certified in hyperbaric oxygen therapy. We sat down to discuss what makes this chamber "a wound healer from the inside out" as well as the proper protocols one should follow before even considering oxygen therapy for chronic issues. In this episode, you'll discover: The Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT): As soon as you step into the hyperbaric chamber, your body works to reoxygenate the cells in low-oxygen tissue. In the long term, not only does the body rebuild damaged blood vessels, but you can also expect to see a decrease in inflammation and swelling, an enhancement of the immune system, and lymphatic and detoxification optimization.  Having a Healthy Foundation Is Key: "You want to get some of that foundational stuff working before you start stressing the system with oxygen," says Dr. Sherr. This includes having the right vitamins, minerals, and nutrients required to detoxify and create energy or ATP effectively. "The challenge in the hyperbaric world is that we don't think about these things as much," he adds. HBOT's Role In Cancer Treatment: Dr. Sherr uses hyperbaric oxygen therapy in conjunction with other interventions, such as vitamin C IVs and a ketogenic diet, as a way to support and sensitize people for chemotherapy and radiation.  What Methylene Blue Does: In terms of supplemental support, Dr. Sherr turns to methylene blue, which helps optimize the mitochondria—the parts of the cells that produce ATP—while promoting detoxification at the same time, which the internal medicine physician calls "very unusual." He opts for low doses of the supplement to avoid potentially causing oxidative stress in the body. 05:40 Integrative Approach to Hyperbaric Therapy 07:03 Understanding Hyperbaric Therapy Basics 15:41 Physiological Benefits of Hyperbaric Therapy 19:07 Hyperbaric Therapy for Various Conditions 22:58 Hyperbaric Therapy and Cancer 26:27 Types of Hyperbaric Chambers 35:06 The Importance of Foundational Health Before Hyperbaric Therapy 39:36 Personal Experiences and Protocols for Hyperbaric Therapy 42:10 Optimizing Hyperbaric Therapy with Other Modalities 52:19 Methylene Blue: Benefits and Applications Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Episode mentioned with Dr. Shai Efrati on HBOT: https://open.spotify.com/episode/1bwEfDrSU5RTpwOkMwYf3L?si=e96668253f504c10 Connect with Dr. Sherr: Website: https://www.hyperbaricmedicalsolutions.com/integrative-hbot/scott-sherr Health Optimization Medicine (HOMe) Practice: https://home-sf.co/ OneBase Health website: https://onebasehealth.com/ Methylene blue product: https://troscriptions.com/pages/team/dr-scott-sherr Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drscottsherr/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drsherr/

Dr. Yurth explains how the decline of our immune system not only affects our resilience to infections but also plays a pivotal role in the development of chronic diseases, neurodegeneration, and overall cellular decline. We dive into how gut health, immune health, and cellular health are deeply interconnected, with 70–80% of our immune system residing in and around the gut. Learn how chronic systemic inflammation and gut permeability can break down your immune defenses and how you can turn back the clock on immune ageing. We also introduce our exciting new product developed in conjunction with Dr Yurth as a scientific advisor, from Aevum Labs—Rejuvenate—which is specifically designed to target immune decline, support cellular health, and reduce chronic inflammation. Dr. Yurth explains how the ingredients in Rejuvenate help restore immune vitality, protect brain health, and improve gut barrier integrity. Key Topics Discussed: What is immunosenescence? Understanding how and why our immune system declines with age. The link between chronic systemic inflammation (inflammaging) and ageing—why targeting inflammation is essential for longevity. In the early-to-mid 1990s, while at Geron Corporation, Bill led the research to discover both the RNA and protein components of the human enzyme called telomerase. This enzyme is responsible for preventing telomeres from shortening in human reproductive cells, and this is why our children are born younger than we are even though they come from our old cells.
