In the Book of Proverbs, King Solomon reminds us that “life and death are in the power of the tongue.” So it should come as no surprise that how we use our words really matters, especially when we talk to and about our spouse. In this program, Chip helps us better guard what comes out of our mouths and how we can repair past wounds we have created with careless or harsh comments. Discover how to cultivate a more loving and supportive environment with your mate.Introduction:Have you ever wondered why a little comment can cause such a big argument with your spouse?Fighting lies with truthLie #14 (for women):My husband's attitude makes no sense to me. Join Rolf Jacobson, Kathryn Schifferdecker, and Craig Koester on "I Love to Tell the Story" as they explore the narrative lectionary reading for October 26th, focusing on the building of Solomon's Temple from 1 Kings 8:1-13. In this episode, the hosts discuss the transition from King David's reign to his son Solomon, who fulfills David's vision of building a permanent temple for worship. They examine how the temple serves as a central place where God's presence is "intensified" while not confining God to a single location - similar to how we understand the sacraments today. Key topics covered: * The significance of the Ark of the Covenant and the stone tablets at the temple's heart * How the covenant relationship ("I will be your God, you will be my people") remains central to worship * The connection between this reading and Reformation Sunday * Personal reflections on visiting St. Peter's Basilica and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher * The importance of communal worship versus privatized religion * How sacred spaces connect us to the communion of saints across centuries The hosts bring their expertise from Luther Seminary to illuminate how this ancient story speaks to contemporary questions about worship, community, and God's presence among us.

#469 Ask David-- What if AI steals my job? I'm freaking out! Recently, I got a cool question from Megan Morrone, a technology and science editor at Axios. She asked about job anxiety due to fears of AI taking over our work. Initially, I declined to speculate, since I've never treated anxiety due to AI stealing someone's job. But the more I thought about it, I realized I had quite a few, perhaps humble, things to say, so here it is, with help from Matt and Rhonda. I'll include a link to her column at the end of these show notes. She wrote: Dear Dr. Burns, I'm a technology and science editor at Axios, working on a story about job anxiety and how it affects workers today. Would have time to chat with me about it? I'm hoping to schedule a brief phone or Zoom conversation before Tuesday. 15–20 minutes? We'd potentially discuss: Why job-related anxiety feels especially pervasive right now What strategies are most effective in managing it How CBT approaches can be applied in workplace or career contexts Please let me know if you have availability. Best, Megan Morrone She subsequently clarified her focus: Hi! I'm looking at anxiety around AI stealing your job. Would you be able to speak to that? Any chance you're Monday between 7:30AM-9:30AM Pacific or anytime after 12:30pm Pacific time? I'd only need 20-30 minutes and we can do it via phone or video call. David's response Hi Megan, I thought of one point I could make if it would further your cause. Every negative emotion has a healthy and an unhealthy version. For example, healthy fear—when you're facing a realistic danger—is not the same as a panic attack or a phobia or social anxiety, etc. Healthy fear, or healthy sadness, and so forth, or not emotional problems needing treatment, but realistic emotions telling us to take action. Sadly, with AI as the latest revolution, lots will change, some good, some bad. And sadly, many will lose their work due to being taken over by AI. Our son, for example, used to get high paid work anytime he wanted in user interface work for companies with prominent web presences. But now AI does all of that, apparently. So, he has to look for something entirely different, and he's tried a lot. With a wife and a baby, the financial issues are real. Now, if someone starts getting overwhelmed by feelings of anxiety, self-criticism, and inadequacy, and hopelessness, that IS something I can help with—big time, Bu the practical problems in finding new and different work will remain even after the person has regained self-esteem and optimism. So sometimes scrambling and being flexible, if possible, and getting coaching with an expert in jobs and career development, perhaps, on what might be practically possible, is called for, and not psychotherapy. I LOVE working with anxiety and can usually guide my patients to extremely rapid recovery, which is tremendously rewarding, for them and for me! But when the problem is real, my expertise does not match the needs. Hope this helps in some small way. Of course, sometimes a good shrink can help with sorting out options in the real world, but that generally requires a different type of specialized training. It is profoundly sad, and we have personally experienced it, that so many people are facing this tragic uncertainty and worry about making ends meet and finding themselves lost due to this overwhelming and unpredictable new revolution. For what it's worth, my book, when Panic Attacks, is a mass market paperback that has helped many anxiety sufferers and illustrate a great many methods. Also, our Feeling Great app is currently free of charge and causes dramatic reductions in anxiety, depression, and a host of other negative emotions in less than 90 minutes the first time people sit down and use it. It actually includes a highly trained AI designed to use the exact methods I use in my work, and our data suggests that it vastly outperforms most human therapists but will probably not replace them because some serious problems require human intervention. Best, david David responds to Megan a bit further Wonderful, I had one or two additional thoughts for you. People faced with layoffs due to AI (or any reason) face two challenges: the inner challenge and the outer challenge. The outer challenge involves finding, of course, some new way to work and support yourself and your family. The inner challenge has to do with your thoughts. One of the Self-Defeating Beliefs behind a great deal of depression and anxiety is the Achievement Addiction, which means measuring your self-worth based on your work, your achievements, and so forth. This goes back to the Calvinist work ethic, as you know, which is one of the cornerstones of western civilization: you ARE what you DO. So if you do good things, you are a good person; but if you are not doing anything productive or constructive, you are worthless. So it is super easy to fall into a pattern of self-critical (and distorted) negative thoughts when you lose your work, including “I'm worthless,” and “I'm letting my family down,” and “this is my fault,” or “it's unfair,” and endless varieties of these themes that can trigger immediate depression, anxiety, shame, inadequacy, hopelessness, anger, and more. So that is the inner battle. And that's where good psychotherapy CAN play a hugely important role, so you don't have to double your trouble and face a loss of your job plus the loss of your self-esteem and dignity at the same time. Thanks, and good luck with your article! Warmly, david We discussed a great deal more on the live podcast. Megan just emailed me again, and here's what she said: You're way ahead of me! The story hasn't been published yet. But you can plug our Axios AI+ newsletter https://www.axios.com/signup/ai-plus So, check it out! And thanks for listening today! Matt, Rhonda, and David

When my kids were little, I came up with a routine that I called “The 5 Things”. Basically, I decided on five things that my kids needed to do before school every morning - the non-negotiables. Today, you'll learn how to create and follow through on your own morning and bedtime routines. You'll Learn:What The 5 Things are and how to use this tool to create simple routines for your kidsWhy The 5 Things helps kids think for themselvesHow to adapt the tool to bedtime or other routines in your familyBarking orders, reminding over and over, and rushing kids does not set you up for a good morning or the gentle handoff we want. The 5 Things is a way to create a simple routine kids can remember and complete on their own (with a little practice, of course).----------------------------------------What Are The 5 Things? In our house, The 5 Things were:Get dressedBrush your teethEat breakfastGet your lunchbox and backpackPut on your socks and shoesAbout five minutes before it was time to leave, I would stand at the door, look them in the eyeballs, and say, “Okay, it's time to leave. Have you done your five things?”If they hadn't done them all yet or if they looked at me with a confused, blank stare, I'd try to coach them through in a way that required them to do their own thinking. You can just hold out your 5 fingers and help them go through and tick them down together. I LOVE this video from @sprinkleinlearning showing a similar morning routine in action.Choosing Your 5 ThingsYour 5 Things don't have to be exactly the same as mine. In the video, you'll see that the little girl is already dressed, and her 5 Things are backpack, water, lunch, shoes, and jacket. There are a few areas here where I have some thoughts…Water bottles - I never really cared about my kids taking a water bottle to school. They were welcome to fill up a bottle and put it in their backpack anytime, but it wasn't something I was going to manage for them. Breakfast - There are lots of differing opinions about eating breakfast in the morning. In our house, I always had breakfast available for a certain period of time (e.g. 7:00-7:40 am). This allowed me to have things cleaned up and put away before we had to leave for school. I deeply believe that a hungry belly is the best teacher when you want kids to learn to eat right. Their brain will start to connect the dots of, “I was hungry today, and it didn't feel good. So I'm going to eat my breakfast tomorrow.”Most young kids also end up having some kind of snack early in the day, so they likely won't be hungry for long. If you're really concerned about your kid eating because they need to take medication that requires food, etc., you can have a granola bar or smoothie set up that they can eat in the car. Jackets - If you live somewhere with cold weather, and your child needs a jacket, don't overthink it. It can get clumped in with putting on socks and shoes. Often my kids would come home with their sweatshirts in their backpacks (we live in California, so not a lot of cold weather), so I would have them keep the sweatshirt near the backpack so it was ready to go the next day.Why The 5 Things WorksThe biggest thing I like about The 5 Things is that it requires kids to do their own thinking. They have to memorize what is required of them in order to go to school. It will take some time for kids to internalize this. What I love so much about the video with the lights (you could also use a checklist or other tool) is that it starts to...

Welcome to "I Love to Tell the Story," a podcast exploring the Narrative Lectionary! In this episode for October 12th, 2025, hosts Rolf Jacobson, Kathryn Schifferducker, and Craig Koester dive into 1 Samuel 3 - the powerful story of God calling the young boy Samuel. Join us as we explore: * The crisis of leadership in ancient Israel at the end of the judges era * Why Samuel didn't initially recognize God's voice calling him * The challenging truth-telling ministry Samuel was called to, including confronting his mentor Eli * How God's persistent calling doesn't depend on our ability but on God's faithfulness * What it means to be a "trustworthy prophet" who speaks difficult truths * The ongoing vocation of listening that defines prophetic ministry * How all Christians are called through baptism to various forms of ministry and witness This episode tackles the uncomfortable reality that sometimes God calls us to speak truth to power, even when it's difficult or involves confronting corruption. The hosts remind us that everyone - not just pastors - has callings from God in multiple areas of life.
Todaywe move on to Ephesians 2:4-9. When we looked at verse 1-3, we see ourselves assinners. Paul points out what our sin nature is, what our sin condition is.What is the tragic consequence of sin in our hearts and lives. We are dead intrespasses and sin. Paul teaches us we're disobedient because of that and weare the sons and children of disobedience. We're depraved. We fulfill the lustof the flesh. We do what comes naturally. And then we also are doomed. We'rechildren of wrath. The wrath of God already abides upon us outside of JesusChrist. That's the condition that we're in. That's the work of sin in our life. Thenthere is God's judgment on sin. God's decree on sin is death “Then when lusthath conceived, it bringeth forth sin. And sin when it is finished, it alwaysbrings forth death” (James 1:15). “The wages of sin is death…”(Romans 6:23). God told Adam, “The day you eat of the fruit of the tree, youshall surely die”. That's the result of sin. It's death. That's what'shappening in the world today. When sin runs rampant and when people aren'tcoming to Christ and being saved. Only the life that we can have in Christ andthe life that gives us a new nature, the nature of God Himself, the Holy Spiritliving within us, can change that. We don't need reformation, we needtransformation! (2 Corinthians 5:17). Ilove the very two words of verse 4! “But God”. First, we see our sincondition (vv. 1-3), but thank God we immediately have a “But God”. Readverses 4-9 again: “But God who is rich in mercy..."“ButGod”. Didyou know that over 46 times you read in the Scriptures that phrase, “But God”.Things are bad, sin abounds, evil is everywhere, “But God”. Joseph wassold into Egypt as a slave by his brothers. But he told them, “It was notyou who sent me here, but God…” (Genesis 45:8). In Genesis 50:20 he went on to tell them, "Youmeant it for evil, but God meant it for good." My friend, when youbring in God, everything changes. You see, sin seems to rule, “But God”. Ilove the many “But God” verses you find in the Bible. After describingthe future judgment of the wicked, the Psalmist declares: “But God willredeem my soul from the power of the grave, For He shall receive me” (Psalm49:15). Psalm 73:26, "My flesh and my heart fail, but God is thestrength of my life." In 2Chronicles 20, King Jehoshaphat was facing an army that you couldn't evennumber. He was fearful, but he called a fast, fell on his knees, and prayed. And in 2 Chronicles 20:15, the prophet told him, "The battle is notyours, but God's." Ilove the “But God” in these verses: “For scarcely for a righteous man will onedie; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But Goddemonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners,Christ died for us” (Romans 5:7-8). Yes, “The wages of sin is death butthe gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans6:23). Aren'tyou thankful for the “Buts” in the Bible? They make all the difference, especially when you focus on God. Paul first focuses on us as sinners in thefirst verses, but now he focuses on God. And with God, I tell you, we havehope. Tomorrow we're going to talk about how God is rich in His mercy. He'srich in His grace. He's full of love because He is love. But today, I trustthat you will look to Jesus and know that He is your only hope of salvation ifyou're without Christ. Today,I'm convinced that we are seeing God doing some great things across thiscountry. The message of the Gospel is being preached from places we would neverhave imagined a few years ago. And the Gospel tells us, “But God”! God lovesus. He cares for us. He's provided a way of salvation. And I tell you today, Hewill save you and anyone who comes to Him by faith and humility.

Join hosts Rolf Jacobson, Kathryn Schifferdecker, and Karoline Lewis on this episode of "I Love to Tell the Story," a podcast on the narrative lectionary for October 5th, 2025, as they explore the powerful story of manna in Exodus 16. After the Israelites' dramatic exodus from Egypt, they find themselves hungry and complaining in the wilderness, longing for the "flesh pots of Egypt." But God responds to their grumbling with miraculous provision - sending quail for meat and manna, the mysterious "bread from heaven" that would sustain them for 40 years. Our hosts dive deep into this foundational story, exploring themes of freedom versus security, God's faithful provision, and what it means to trust God day by day. Catherine connects this ancient story to Jesus' "Bread of Life" discourse in John 6, while Ralph shares insights about the "manna economy" - where everyone has enough and no one lacks. Discover how this wilderness story reveals both human nature and God's character as the ultimate provider, and learn why the manna stopped only when Israel was ready to enter the promised land.

It may not be news to listeners of this podcast, but the Looney Tunes cartoons can be very gay. In celebration of the nearly 800 shorts being hosted on Tubi, Drew, Glen and returning guest Tony Rodriguez look at some of our favorites that also lend themselves to a queer reading. And no, it's not all Bugs Bunny in Drag. In fact, we probably didn't pick the drag moments you're expecting. But no worries: There is zero Tweety content in this episode.
