We have two of March's Kung Fu Master buddies (long-tome friend of the show, Big John and Alexander of the Iron Chamber) as guests – who he carelessly calls friends. As we will find out however, after disecting the intricacies of the side boob sidekick, the accidental re-choke and a chicken intermisson, they are not. A real masterclass in gaslighting, psychological manipulation, dating advice, prosopagnosia, partial amnesia, body dysmorphia, experimental mixology and IT DIY ensues in the shitty part of the podcast.
Hello again Fight Friends!HAPPY SEPTEMBER LONG WEEKEND!I am up in Sherwood Park for a wedding, but brought my computer with me to get this AWESOME podcast out and maybe help out making the long weekend commute a little shorter for my friends travelling this weekend.SPEAKING OF AWESOME PODCASTS! - in this episode I get to sit and chat with one of the real old skool legends of Canadian Muay Thai, Mr. Gerald Ching of MAFA in Mississauga! I won't lie to ya, I have known of Gerald for a long time, we have met several times - But I always watched him as a coach/cornerman at events and noticed he's always the same! very stoic/unchanged in demeanor as well as behaviour, win or loss - and because of this, I wasn't sure really how to read him. But it wasn't long into this podcast that I was reminded why I like to speak with the old school on the pod.We have a chat about when Gerald first laid eyes on Muay Thai and his immediate obsession in the 80's. Their wasn't Muay Thai happening much in the Great White North at the time, so Gerald took it upon himself to go and seek the information, training and knowledge to being back to his students and for himself, before being introduced to Ajahn Suchart. We also get into his and Eric Rocha's unique relationship (Eric was the last episode!) from student to fighter/coach to running a well oiled machine of a fight team! AND - I get called out for letting my inner bitch come out a bit being a trainer/padman! Gerald has a few years on me and is still in GREAT shape and very active in the trainer lifestyle, and he didn't let me use my excuses haha, in all honesty - I loved it! I am always a student in Martial Arts, my cup is always 1/2 empty and I listen to those who came before me. So speaking to one of the Master Splinters of Canadian Muay Thai was a real treat and I'm grateful. These are the kinds of podcasts where I actually take something away from it and try to apply it to my own life - I suppose you might call that inspiration! My favorite podcasts are often the ones where we talk beyond the "punch and kick" and talk about the life that surrounds the punch and kick - and this is one of those pods! thank you for the great chat sir! I am genuinely grateful. SHOUT OUT TO YOU GERALD!

SUMMARY In this episode, Andrew Adams and Victor Guarino delve into the nuances of martial arts etiquette, exploring its cultural significance and practical applications. They discuss various aspects of etiquette, including the importance of bowing, the practice of cleaning the dojo, and the expectations surrounding sparring and testing. The conversation highlights how these traditions foster respect, discipline, and a sense of community within martial arts training. TAKEAWAYS Etiquette in martial arts is rooted in cultural traditions. Bowing serves as a sign of respect and acknowledgment. Cleaning the dojo is a way to take ownership and reflect on training. Sparring etiquette emphasizes safety and mutual respect among students. Students should feel empowered to ask questions and seek knowledge. Testing should be a personal decision based on readiness, not instructor pressure. Cultural differences influence how etiquette is perceived and practiced. Mindful cleaning can be a meditative practice for martial artists. Communication and non-verbal cues are essential in a dojo setting. This episode is sponsored by Martialytics. Podcast Description In this episode of School Owner Talk, Duane Brumitt and Shihan Allie Alberigo dive into the growing attention span crisis among today's youth and how martial arts schools can adapt. They compare childhood in the 70s, 80s, and 90s to today's digitally distracted world, highlighting the challenges—and opportunities—for instructors. The discussion explores technology's impact on focus, why traditional class structures no longer work, and how martial arts can uniquely rebuild a child's ability to pay attention. This is Part 1 of a two-part series on using martial arts as the cure for shrinking attention spans. Key Takeaways Attention Spans Are Shorter Than EverKids today are wired for quick, constant stimulation—thanks to smartphones, video games, and fast-paced media—making long lectures or repetitive drills ineffective. Technology Is Both the Culprit and a ToolWhile screens fragment focus, kids often learn better from video demonstrations, proving that tech can be incorporated productively. Shorter, Layered Segments Work BestBreaking drills into 2–4 minute chunks, mixing in games, and disguising repetition keeps students engaged while still building skills. Structure and Ritual Provide StabilityBowing in, affirmations, and consistent class routines help signal the brain that it's time to focus—something many homes lack. Progressive Class Length Builds StaminaStarting beginners with 30 minutes, then gradually moving to 40 and 45 minutes, strengthens focus over time without overwhelming kids. Action Steps for School Owners Audit Your Class SegmentsReview how long your drills or lectures last. Adjust to shorter, more varied segments to meet kids where they're at. Use “Disguised Repetition”Teach the same skill through different methods—games, pad work, partner drills—so students practice without getting bored. Balance Energy LevelsDesign classes like a rollercoaster: high-energy drills followed by calm focus work, then back up again. Reinforce Rituals and Affirmations Make bowing in, “yes I can” statements, or leadership chants consistent so kids know how to mentally switch into focus mode. Gradually Expand Class TimeStart younger students with shorter classes, then build up as they grow. Treat focus as a muscle that strengthens with progression. Additional Resources Mentioned Deep Work by Cal Newport – understanding focus in a distracted world. Microsoft study on declining attention spans (from 12 seconds in 2000 to 8 seconds by 2015). Previous School Owner Talk episodes on teaching strategies, student engagement, and adapting to technology. Upcoming Part 2 of this series: how to educate parents and use curriculum design to reinforce focus.

She says, "Googlie Wooglie I like a lot because of Sensei Ken, the fun game with cool words, and just love Geoff's Keanu Reeves impersonation, and Keanu Reeves as Abraham Lincoln." Episode Five has what I consider our best ending. We all break each other—even Billy Merritt. I dare you not to laugh. We'll be back on September 13th with a brand new hole! ~~ In rabbitHOLE's fifth episode, the BIT CREW educates listeners about some critical issues, including: Googlie Wooglie Mc Dojo Grammar Police Konrad takes a deep dive into the origins of the term GOOGOL (a one with a hundred zeroes). He starts the BIT CREW off on an improv adventure of surf lingo, organized crime involving unsuspecting UK co-eds, "re-imagining" history, and mispronouncing words. Episode five has our favorite ending so far…we all just lost it – we hope you laugh so much your sides will ache, and your heart goes pitter-pat. As always, rabbitHOLE is unscripted and inspired by the CREW's real-life rabbit hole adventures. If you enjoy rabbitHOLE, follow, rate, and share rabbitHOLE with your friends! Send us a textFairfax criminal lawyer Jonathan Katz one day Googled for other lawyers practicing martial arts, and came upon David Kaufman of KarateLaw.com . Now, several years later, Jon Katz speaks to David (now retired from law practice and serving as an expert witness and business security consultant) about applying martial arts experience and knowledge to criminal defense and to the practice of law generally, benefitting from the regular practice of martial arts, and keeping our wits and summoning our calmness during our legal battles. Jon Katz daily practices the internal martial art of taijiquan Yang style short form, approaching every challenge in courthouse battle and beyond as one more opportunity to engage and improve in proverbial push hands / sensing hands sparring. Today's episode of UFC Unfiltered delivers a powerful mix of rising talent and personal triumph as Jim and Matt welcome UFC featherweight prospect Austin Bashi and DWCS hopeful Jimmy Drago. First up is Bashi, fresh off his first UFC victory — a slick first-round submission over John Yannis. He reflects on bouncing back from his debut loss, chasing a dream he's had since childhood, and what it was like mimicking Alexander Volkanovski in Diego Lopes' camp. Between guests, Jim and Matt break down highlights from UFC Fight Night: Taira vs. Park — including standout performances from Tatsuro Taira, Chris Duncan, Esteban Ribovics, and more. Then, Jimmy Drago joins ahead of his Dana White's Contender Series debut on August 12th. The Yonkers native shares his incredible story — from losing his father, a 9/11 first responder, to battling addiction and surviving eight overdoses. With sobriety, discipline, and grit, Drago turned a goal of just winning one pro fight into a legitimate UFC dream — and he's one win away from making it real when he faces Ty Miller on the first DWCS card of 2025.

Re-Releasing my old episode with the great Geoff Thompson, whose bestseller, "Watch My Back" was. Apivotal book for me, first reading it as a teenage martial artist in England. Geoff is a man who has lived many lives. In his earlier years he worked on some of the toughest “doors” in Coventry, as a Bouncer, sometimes literally fighting for his life to protect the innocent against the violent (four of his colleagues were murdered during this time). He went in to become the prolific author of over 50 books, an award-winning film maker, a spiritual teacher, and has been a life-long martial artist. Geoff wrote two books solely about fear: both overcoming fear and developing a strong mindset to face challenging situations. I remember reading these back when I was fighting in MMA to get my mind ready for combat, but his writings on overcoming fear are useful in almost any endeavor, especially the fear of being an entrepreneur with no steady paycheck. Geoff has empowered countless people to not only face their fears and improve their personal safety, but to lead happier, more confident lives. And that is what martial arts is about. Leading better lives. Until next time, love and good vibes. Jim and Matt kick off the show recapping Saturday's UFC card in Abu Dhabi, where “Matt-stradamus” Serra stays red hot with another perfect night of picks. They react to Reinier de Ridder's razor-close win over Robert Whittaker, Petr Yan's bounce-back performance, and Steven Nguyen's record-setting knockdown spree before welcoming back Davey Grant to discuss his gritty win over Da'Mon Blackshear and what's fueling his late-career surge. Finally, inaugural UFC BJJ welterweight champ Andrew Tackett joins ahead of his first title defense this Thursday. The middle Tackett brother reflects on growing up in a grappling-obsessed family and shares why his aggressive style makes him a fan-friendly champion for a UFC BJJ ruleset already designed to deliver action.
It's a loaded Wednesday on UFC Unfiltered as Jim and Matt welcome two top-10 UFC contenders and gear up for Saturday's UFC Fight Night card in Abu Dhabi! The American Top Team standout reflects on teammate Dustin Poirier's recent retirement before unpacking his place in the stacked lightweight division's current logjam at the top. Then, 7th-ranked middleweight Jared Cannonier jumps on to preview his August 16th bout with Michael “Venom” Page. Fresh off a 4th-round KO over "RoboCop" that snapped a 2-fight skid, Cannonier compares MVP's style to prior opponents before ultimately putting on his analyst hat with a pick in this Saturday's Whittaker vs. de Ridder main event. The guys wrap things up with three fight picks of their own for Saturday's early-start Fight Night in Abu Dhabi.
