    Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 25, 2025 is: dyspeptic • diss-PEP-tik • adjective Dyspeptic is a formal and old-fashioned word used to describe someone who is bad-tempered (in other words, easily annoyed or angered), or something that shows or is characteristic of a bad temper. The noun form of dyspeptic is dyspepsia. // The comedian's shtick of delivering dyspeptic rants on the daily annoyances of modern life was enormously popular. See the entry > Examples: “Statler and Waldorf from ‘The Muppet Show' made a long-running joke of dyspeptic critics. Never once in my teenage years did I point to the TV and say, ‘Mom and Dad, that is what I want to be when I grow up.'” — Charles McNulty, The Los Angeles Times, 4 Dec. 2024 Did you know? If you've ever told someone (or been told yourself) to “quit bellyaching,” then you should have no trouble grokking the gastronomic origins of dyspeptic, an adjective used in formal speech and writing to describe someone with a bad temper. To wit, indigestion (aka dyspepsia) is often accompanied by nausea, heartburn, and gas—symptoms that can turn even your cheeriest chum into a curmudgeonly crank. So it's no wonder that dyspepsia can refer both to a sour stomach and a sour mood, or that its adjective form, dyspeptic, can describe someone afflicted by either. The pep in both words comes from the Greek pep-, base of the verb péptein meaning “to cook, ripen, or digest.”

May 26-June 1I grew up on a beautiful spread of woods and meadows near Rolla, Missouri. We had about 230 acres with our house up on the south hill overlooking a beautiful valley. A small stream called Spring Creek ran through the bottomlands and a narrow gravel road led from our home to the access road of old Highway 66. The view was so peaceful and beautiful. One late afternoon I stood outside with my Dad in our front yard looking over all of this beauty. Dad was a noted professor at the University of Missouri and for many years the Dean of the School of Science. He was brilliant. I'll never forget this moment together, because I asked Dad a question and the answer he gave me would change my life…

Garth Heckman The David Alliance TDAgiantSlayer@Gmail.com    Mawage, that bwessed awangment, that dweam wifin a dweam … And wuv, tru wuv, will fowow you foweva … So tweasure your wuv.   God loves everyone…  True. However. Gods unconditional love is not Gods unconditional approval. So lets look at some scriptures that seem counterintuitive    John 3:16 for God so loved the world that he gave his only son…. Romans 2:6 God will judge the world 2 Peter 3:10 God will destroy the earth and its inhabitants    The problem lies within our twisted world/self centered view of what love is. Love is a feeling, it is something that always makes us happy, it always feels good and it is always in line with what we want. NO and DOUBLE NO!  Love is discipline, love is honesty when we don't want to hear what is right. Love is correction. Love is punishment. Love is not letting us get our own way. And thank God love is not a feeling or none of us would still have parents… im sure they would have all walked away at some point.    My parents loved me better than I could have ever expected.. but they did not always approve of what I did. When I wore 8 inch kiss boots to church… my Dad was none to happy, made me sit in the front row of Church… it was kind of embarrassing… did not feel loving at all - but it was.    Gods love will be responsible for all types of action on the earth… its not our job to try to figure it out or ask why. It is simply our job to trust him. There were a lot of things I did not understand as a kid that my parents did… but I understand now. What we need to understand in todays world is God is love. But love is not God. Do not worship love at the cost of watering down scripture, making excuses for going against his word or for excusing your behavior simply because …well… God loves us!    Division brings weakness. Separation brings power.    What do I mean. Well we think Love as a feeling (defined by what we want) is all inclusive. But it is actually divisive. Ever get a group of people together and tell them they all can have what ever they want? Its anarchy! It weakens humanity and our natural bond as people.  However if I understand that sometimes love seemingly separates us from what we want… but it is God keeping us from what is evil, bad, destructive… it is actually Gods power at its best. Again Division brings weakness… we are most divided when we all thing we can all get whatever we want.  Do not get fooled as to which is which… it will ruin your life in no time.

Fathering Through the Stages: Presence, Healing, and the Power of a Dad's Yes In this episode of the Exploring More Podcast, Michael Thompson and SJ Jennings step into the sacred and strategic role of fatherhood—unpacking what it means to guide children through the stages of growth with intention, love, and grace. From boyhood to beloved son, explorer to warrior, and eventually king and elder sage, each stage of a child's journey asks a father different questions: Do you see me? Do you love what you see? Will you walk with me? Michael and SJ explore how a father's response—through presence, time, and affirming words—can either fuel a child's identity or deepen their wounds. The conversation highlights the power of modeling a real, intimate relationship with God. Drawing from personal experiences, parenting wins and do-overs, and biblical truths like Proverbs 22:6, the hosts remind us that good fathering is less about perfection and more about orientation. When a dad is oriented—anchored in God's love and aware of his influence—he can lead his children with clarity and strength. Listeners will hear practical strategies for parenting: from playing games and navigating emotions to recognizing when wounds have been left unaddressed—and going back to make things right. Michael and SJ also use helpful metaphors, like building the right "boats and charts" for the uncharted waters of parenting, urging dads to be intentional rather than reactive. This episode is an invitation to every father to show up, make course corrections, and step more deeply into the role God has entrusted to them—not out of pressure, but out of love. We hope you enjoy this episode and invite you to connect with us!

Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! This week, we travel back to the shadowy underworld of post-revolutionary France with The Emperor of Paris (2018), a gritty historical crime drama that combines lavish period detail with pulpy intrigue and one of France's most infamous figures—Eugène-François Vidocq.Directed by Jean-François Richet (Mesrine), The Emperor of Paris stars Vincent Cassel as Vidocq, a real-life criminal turned detective who forged a remarkable path from the depths of prison to become the head of France's first modern detective agency. This cinematic retelling dramatizes his journey as he battles both the criminal underworld he once ruled and the powerful institutions that mistrust his redemption. The film excels in its production design, immersing viewers in the dank alleys, foggy courtyards, and grand salons of Napoleonic Paris. The costumes, sets, and atmosphere evoke an oppressive, corrupt society where everyone's wearing a mask—metaphorically, if not literally.Cassel brings gravitas and grit to the role of Vidocq, portraying him not as a clean-cut hero but a deeply flawed, resourceful survivor—a man at constant war with his past and those who'd rather see him dead than reformed. Why It Stands OutVincent Cassel is magnetic as ever, anchoring the film with intensity and quiet menace. The action sequences—knife fights in narrow passageways, rooftop chases, and prison breaks—are shot with stylish energy. It explores themes of identity, reputation, and redemption, questioning whether a man can ever truly escape his past.A Dad's TakeIf you like your period dramas with more grime than gloss, The Emperor of Paris delivers. It's a fascinating look at a real historical figure who straddled both sides of the law. Think Les Misérables with less singing and more stabbing. Not quite a family watch—but definitely one for fans of moody, slow-burn crime epics.

Bible Reading: Ephesians 4:22-24; Colossians 3:8-14Iris pointed to an oak tree along the bike path where she was riding with her dad and her brother, Ethan. "Half the leaves on that tree are green, and half are brown!" she said. Ethan laughed. "I guess it can't decide whether it's spring or fall." Dad stopped his bike under the tree. "Those brown leaves are left over from last year," he said. "This kind of oak is very unwilling to let its leaves drop in the fall. Even the strong winds and heavy snowfall of winter are often unable to tear them from the branches.""Well, the tree would look nicer if it would just let those ugly, useless old leaves drop," said Iris. "Maybe the tree is a lot like us," said Dad. "Sometimes we cling to ugly things too--like sinful thoughts and actions.""Like calling people bad names," said Ethan. "You do that, Iris."Iris sighed "I know," she said, "but at least I don't go around pointing out other people's faults and ignoring my own." She frowned at her brother. "Okay, I admit it," said Ethan. "I don't know why I always notice the mistakes others make more than the good stuff they do."As they got back on their bikes, Iris asked, "What makes those brown leaves finally fall? I know they don't stay on the tree all summer.""When new leaves grow and cover the tree, they push the old ones off," replied Dad. "The old ones must give way to the new--and you know what? Our lives as Christians are like that too. The Bible says our old habits and desires are sinful, like dead leaves. But when we trust in Jesus, the Holy Spirit changes us into new creations and puts His love and desires in our hearts, like fresh leaves in the spring.""So we want the new leaves in our lives to push off the dead ones?" asked Iris.Dad nodded. "The tree grows new leaves by giving more energy and nutrients to the new growth," he explained. "And Jesus gives us the power to let go of our old ways and live in a way that shows others the new life we have in Him." –Trudy Vander Veen How About You?Are there sins or bad habits in your life that you can't seem to get rid of? We all have "dead leaves" like that, but Jesus offers forgiveness and hope. He's given us the Holy Spirit so we have the power to replace those dead things with words and actions that bring life. Trust Him to help you let go of old habits and live the new life of love He's given you. Today's Key Verse:But on your new nature, created to be like God--truly righteous and holy. 272: What Do We Mean by Therapy, and Culturally Responsive Care? with The Yellow Chair Collective

    Dear White Women

Play Episode Listen Later May 20, 2025 32:11

Raise your hand if you've been to therapy before.  My first time, if I'm remembering correctly, is a few months after my Dad died when I was in my mid-twenties, and my college roommate set me up with her aunt, who was a renowned psychoanalyst.  She also happened to be Asian. Now that it's been decades and I've had so many more experiences with so many more therapists, all of whom have been white, I realize how rare and fortunate it was for me to have had that experience of a therapist who culturally understood me, which then played a formative role in my own understanding of my relationship with myself, my parents, self care and success and my place in the world.    If you've never had the experience of having therapists who are the same race as you, you might really get this visceral sense of relief that we are talking about.  This unspoken understanding that can-not always, but often, exist in those spaces of similarity.  I think it's played a huge part in the relationship we have had, as multi-ethnic daughters of one Japanese immigrant parent and one white American parent each - there were just some things we didn't have to explain to each other.   Which is why when we learned about a whole mental health support system - one we've come to learn doesn't have to just include therapists, but a whole system of community support - that is centered on Asian Americans, we wanted to seize the opportunity to talk about culturally responsive care, about what it means to work on ourselves to be better people, and more. What to listen for: What it means to be a better person  Therapy 101 - what challenges people go to therapy for, what types of therapists are out there What culturally responsive care means, and how this applies to the Asian American community  How we can support our own mental health, and that of others About our guests:  Soo Jin Lee, a licensed therapist, executive director of Yellow Chair Collective, and co-founder of Entwine Community, has made a profound impact in mental health advocacy, shaped by her own experiences as an Asian immigrant. Her work focuses on culturally responsive mental health care, addressing the unique challenges faced by immigrant and Asian American communities. She co-authored the influential book Where I Belong: Healing Trauma and Embracing Asian American Identity, which explores identity and healing through a culturally informed lens. Recognized by NPR, PBS, CBS, and CUNY, Soo Jin is dedicated to fostering community support and advancing culturally sensitive mental health services.   Linda Yoon is the founder of Yellow Chair Collective and co-founder of Entwine Community, organizations dedicated to addressing mental health education and service gaps in services for BIPOC communities, with a special focus on Asian Americans. She is recognized as a co-author of the book "Where I Belong: Healing Trauma and Embracing Asian American Identity," which delves deeply into themes of Asian American identity and resilience, alongside the racial, cultural, and intergenerational dynamics present within Asian American communities. Linda's work has been recognized and featured in media outlets including NPR, PBS, CBS, LA Times, and Buzzfeed. With a heartfelt commitment to well-being and community empowerment, Linda drives changes through mental health programs and advocacy initiatives.   Brief synopsis of the book: Soo Jin Lee and Linda Yoon have personally observed the frequent neglect of mental health issues in their own immigrant families and within Asian and Asian American communities. Their book "Where I Belong" illuminates how trauma perpetuates through generations and impacts relationships, emphasizing the Asian American experience for better understanding and healing of racial and intergenerational trauma.   “Where I Belong” offers crucial therapeutic techniques, reflective questions, journaling prompts, and grounding exercises, empowering readers to recognize their intergenerational strengths and resilience and to fully embrace their identity and cultural heritage.   About Yellow Chair Collective: Yellow Chair Collective is a psychotherapist group with a special focus on Asian and Asian American identity based in California, Oregon, Washington, and New York. Asian Americans and the multicultural population struggle with unique pain points. Much of what Asian American and multicultural therapy identifies as intergenerational trauma or racial discrimination has been neglected and dismissed throughout American history. As a Collective, we are dedicated to bridging cultural identity as a huge part of everyone's mental struggles.   The Yellow Chair Collective

“A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:10–12 NLT) When he was little, my son Jonathan had a habit of wandering. One day, we were in a hotel and came to an elevator. He ran ahead to push the button. I told him, “If the elevator comes, wait until Dad gets there.” Just as I arrived at the elevator, the doors were closing, and he was inside. He was gone. I frantically pushed the button for the other elevator and waited for what seemed like an eternity. Finally, the doors opened, and I jumped in. I went down to the lobby. He wasn’t there. I ran back to the elevator, pushed every button for every floor, and as the doors opened, I would scream out his name. I didn’t care about decorum. I wanted to find my son. And I found him, about three floors up, wandering around. But you know what? After that experience, he didn’t wander anymore. He got separated from his dad, and it was scary for him. He learned how important it was to stay close to me. As Christians, we should want to stay as close to our heavenly Father as possible. Our enemy, the devil, is a powerful adversary, and we are no match for him in our own strength. The apostle Peter wrote, “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8 NLT). We don’t want to venture out into this life on our own abilities and suffer spiritual defeat. I have a healthy respect for the devil’s ability. That’s why I want to stay as close to the Lord as possible. I want to be strong in Him. Wanting to stay close to your Father may seem like a childish instinct, but it’s actually evidence of a mature faith. In Ephesians 6, the apostle Paul instructs us to “Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power” and to “put on all of God’s armor” (NLT). He leaves no room for solo outings or wandering journeys. Staying close to our heavenly Father gives us more than protection by an all-powerful God. Psalm 94:17–19 says, “Unless the Lord had helped me, I would soon have settled in the silence of the grave. I cried out, ‘I am slipping!’ but your unfailing love, O Lord, supported me. When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer” (NLT). If ever there was a time to be walking closely with the Lord, it is now. This is not the time to be playing games with God. This is not the time to wander away. Both parents feed the nestlings until they fledge, then Mom and Dad feed them for another three weeks, until the kids are on their own. Whew! Time for a break, right? Not a chance. Bible Reading: Matthew 15:7-9; Titus 1:15-16"Look," said Adrian, pointing to an insect he and his sister Eva had caught out in the garden. "Maybe it's praying!" Sure enough, the bug's forelegs were folded together as if in prayer. "Let's see if we can find out what it is." The kids searched online and found a picture of the bug they had caught. "It's a praying mantis," said Adrian."Does it really pray?" asked Eva.Adrian laughed. "Of course not! Bugs don't pray. I wonder what we should feed it?" He scrolled down the page. "This says they eat other insects and like to eat their prey alive.""Gross!" said Eva, wrinkling up her nose."It says here that if you put a small piece of meat on a string and move it in front of a praying mantis, he may think it's alive and eat it," said Adrian. "Let's try it!"Adrian put a tiny piece of hamburger on the end of a string, and sure enough, the mantis lunged for it."So, did your new pet like the food you gave him?" asked Mom.Adrian nodded. "The website we found said praying mantises are vicious little creatures. It said the female will even eat her husband if she gets hungry enough.""You little hypocrite," said Mom, looking at the bug. "You look so faithful and devoted with your forelegs folded like that, but you're a pretender--you don't mean it at all."Eva giggled. "That would be a good name for him." So Pretender he became.Whenever Adrian looked at Pretender, he felt a bit funny inside. At dinnertime he folded his hands and said "Amen" after his parents, but he never cared to listen to what was being said. I'm just like that bug, he thought. I'm not really praying--I'm just pretending. Adrian knew Jesus loved him, and he pretended he loved Jesus too. But he had never asked Jesus to be his Savior. As Adrian snuggled down into his blankets one night, God seemed to be whispering to him, Haven't you been a pretender long enough? Suddenly, Adrian tossed off the blankets and got up. I'm going to talk to Mom and Dad! he thought. I want to quit pretending and become a real Christian.–Matilda H. NordtvedtHow About You?Are you just going through the motions so others think you're a Christian? Are you more focused on fitting in or pleasing your parents than on God and what He thinks? Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

Recently, my brother Scott acquired our dad’s military service records from World War II. As I studied the pages, there was nothing startling or shocking—nothing about who Dad was. There were mere facts. Data. It was interesting to read but ultimately dissatisfying because I didn’t come away feeling like I learned anything new about Dad. Thankfully, in giving us a record of the life and work of Jesus, the four gospels are much more than just data. They are descriptions that reveal who Jesus was in His time on this earth as well as what He did and said. In Mark’s gospel, that record was for the purpose of proving Mark’s thesis statement: “The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God” (1:1). Immediately, Mark tells us how John the Baptist testified about this Messiah. John said, “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie” (v. 7). Mark’s account makes it clear that Jesus is the Son of God. As John the disciple added in his own account of Jesus’ life, “These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31). The evidence of Jesus’ life is abundant. These questions remain: what does He mean to you? How has He changed your life?

Bible Reading: Exodus 17:1-7; Psalm 45:7; 1 Corinthians 10:10-12"Hey, Amy! Don't forget to get the wastebasket from my room," said Greyson as he opened the door to go out.Amy scowled at him. "I hate taking out the trash." She turned to her mother. "Greyson always gets the easy stuff to do while I have to tramp around the house collecting smelly old garbage!""You chose that job for this month," Mom reminded her. "You said you were tired of dusting and folding laundry and that Greyson always got the easy jobs--like emptying the trash." Amy muttered to herself as she left to start collecting wastebaskets.A little later, the back door squeaked loudly as Greyson pushed it open and came back in. "That squeaky door is driving me crazy!" Amy said crossly. "Quit going in and out, Greyson."Her brother grinned and turned back toward the door. "I think I left something outside. I'll be back in a minute." He swung the door back and forth."Mom, make him stop!" Amy whined, covering her ears."Enough, Greyson," said Mom. "Quit teasing."Just then Dad opened the squeaky door. "I guess it's about time for me to oil these hinges," he said. "They're complaining pretty loudly." He let the door squeak shut behind him as he walked in. "Remember the Bible verses we read for devotions last night--the ones about the Israelites after they left Egypt? They complained a lot--just like this screen door. It needs oil, and I think they needed to apply oil to their lives by remembering God was with them and promised to take care of them. Perhaps that would be what the Bible calls the oil of joy.""Yeah. Some people around here need some of that oil too," said Greyson, giving his sister a grin.Amy sighed. "I guess I have been pretty squeaky lately.""Well, you can apply oil to that squeak by remembering the joy you have in Jesus," said Dad. "He saved us from sin so we could be filled with the joy of knowing Him for all eternity. We can experience that joy by remembering He loves us and is always with us--even when things don't go our way." Amy straightened up. "Okay…sorry for complaining. Now, who has trash they'd like me to get rid of?"–Maria I. Sellers How About You?Do you complain a lot? Are you constantly telling those around you about every little thing that isn't exactly the way you'd like it? If so, you need to apply some oil of joy to your life.
