Think nutrition is only for podium chasers? Think again. In this inspiring chat, we meet Dr Sarah Barr, a proud back-of-the-packer, cancer survivor and one determined triathlete chasing big endurance goals including a full Ironman for her 62nd birthday. As a long-time calorie counter and clean eater, Sarah thought she had nutrition sorted... until she realised she had no idea how to fuel as a triathlete. We dive into:• Why nutrition is just as critical for slower athletes• Common fuelling myths that leave back-of-packers bonking• How Sarah overcame restrictive mindsets to fuel with purpose• What she’s doing differently to chase her next big goal This episode is a must-listen for any triathlete who’s ever thought they’re “too slow” to need a proper fuelling plan. The government has announced an independent inquiry into repeated failings in maternity services at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Earlier this year, a BBC investigation revealed that the deaths of at least 56 babies and two mothers over the past five years at the Trust could perhaps have been avoided. BBC correspondent Divya Talwar joins Nuala McGovern, alongside Lauren Caulfield and Amarjit Kaur Matharoo, who both tragically lost their babies while receiving care at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust. This month, the Ironman World Championships were held in Kona, Hawaii, where Britain's Kat Matthews won silver. The men's and women's championships, previously held simultaneously, were split into separate events in 2023. However, they are set to reunite next year. Questions have been raised about the impact this change may have on female competitors. To discuss the championships and celebrate Kat's achievement, Nuala is joined by Kat Matthews and Jordan Blanco, a contributor to Triathlete magazine who attended the event. A new report reveals that progress towards gender equity in the architecture profession still remains too slow. Inequalities remain deeply rooted — with pay disparities, toxic and exclusionary workplace cultures, and half of female respondents surveyed said they had been bullied, and a third had experienced sexual harassment at work. Nuala hears from Valerie Vaughan-Dick, Chief Executive of Royal Institute of British Architects, and Helen Lee who was the project architect on a social housing development in London for the elderly which has just won this year's Stirling Prize for Architecture. The Essex witch trials represent one of the darkest chapters in British history. A new Sky History series, Witches of Essex, revisits the real lives of women accused of witchcraft in the 16th and 17th centuries, drawing on newly examined court records and the latest historical research. Historian Dr Eleanor Janega joins Nuala to discuss.Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Dianne McGregor

Send us a textWelcome back to AMP, its a great pleasure to welcome Nick Dunn on the pod.Nick says"Having been double World Age Group Champion across Sprint and Olympic distance as well as racing at Elite level in both short and long distance events, I had an enjoyable triathlon career and learnt so much along the way. While I was competing I also started coaching and quickly realised that this is what I wanted to do when I finally hung up my tri suit! That happened in 2013 and since then I have been a full time triathlon coach and never looked back.  Coaching is not just my job, it is my passion. I have over 20 years racing and coaching experience plus a degree in sport science and a background in strength training.  For the last 12 years, as the Co-Founder of Challenge Tri Camp I have been lucky enough to have gained even more experience of working with a wide range of athletes covering all abilities and multisport disciplines, on 100's of training camps!  So with most of my life in and around triathlon and now even having children that partake, I see my role as not just as a triathlon coach but as a role model and educator with the aim of helping our Challenge Tri Camp athletes to become healthier, fitter and stronger. This in turn, then aids them to achieve and meet their performance goals and triathlon aspirations. I have taken complete novices who are unable to swim to compete in half distance events to working with professional triathletes to fine tune their already high skill base.  I have clients who are all about competing and have helped guide them through qualifications and then onto World Championships over all triathlon distances and also led athletes to World and European Gold medals in several disciplines. I am very proud of these coaching achievements and hold them above my own personal ones but for me it is about self-improvement no matter what level you are competing or completing at.  Whether that being doing their first ironman or a novice event, I look at all your numbers and stats, and enjoy doing the ‘techy' bit but also want to know how you are doing and how you feel – triathlon both in training and on race day is about mental and physical strength and part of the coach athlete relationship is looking at the person as a whole. I have ‘been there and done it' but also have the knowhow and take huge pleasure to be able to pass on my knowledge and help others no matter what their starting level or aspirations are. At Challenge Tri Camp we have a long and proud history of helping athletes achieve their goals and sporting aspirations.  Working closely with the athlete, it is about training smart to ensure they hit their goals in peak condition. What happens when you train like a pro but still bonk on race day? In this episode, I’m joined by Triathlon Nutrition Academy athlete Brent Saltmarsh — a retired Army veteran turned endurance addict — who shares his eye-opening journey from cramping and gut blowouts to PBs and cramp-free racing. We unpack the rookie nutrition mistakes that nearly ruined his Ironman and the exact changes he’s made to transform his performance in just a few months inside TNA. You’ll hear about: How Brent went from survival mode to racing with confidence His biggest pre-TNA nutrition blunders (including a disastrous caffeine gel moment) Why cramping and gut issues were signs of a deeper fuelling problem The exact changes he’s made to hit PBs in his 40s His long-term triathlon goals (hint: 90-year-old Ironman anyone?)
