“Whose footprints are these?” This week we talk about our favorite parts from one of the greatest video games of all time! The complex gameplay, the intriguing characters, the weapons, the plot, even the music…. Metal Gear may have been one of the most “secret black projects”, but Metal Gear Solid is one of the most well-known and fun games ever! (IGN #36, IMDB #5!)Today's root beer is Cicero Salted Caramel.Intro and Outro music by Stockmusic331 on Pond5Send us a Text Message.
Text us and say hello! In episode 14 of "Backwards Compatible: A Generation 'S' Podcast," my good friend Derek Taylor joins me as Lou takes the night off. Together, we delve into the stealthy world of "Metal Gear Solid," released in September 1998. A groundbreaking title on the PlayStation, "Metal Gear Solid" wasn't just a game; it was a cinematic journey, marking my first experience with a two-disc game. I remember my initial approach was all wrong—I tried to beat up all the enemies, only to realize hand-to-hand combat wasn't going to cut it. This challenge was what sparked my love for stealth games. We discuss the emotional and cinematic impact of the game, reminiscing about the innovative fourth wall breaks, like having to switch controller ports to defeat Psycho Mantis and his eerie ability to "read" your memory card. Set in the desolate backdrop of Alaska, the game's atmosphere was thick with tension, complemented by humorous touches like Snake's almost pointless cigarette smoking. We also talk about the voice acting, particularly Cam Clarke's memorable performance as Liquid Snake, as well as the different endings, influenced by player choices during Ocelot's torture scene, added depth and replayability, affecting whether Meryl lived or died—and consequently, whether you received infinite ammo or stealth camouflage for your next playthrough. And as always, we wrap up with a few pop culture facts from September 1998, providing a glimpse into the world when "Metal Gear Solid" stealthily revolutionized the gaming landscape. Join Derek and me as we revisit this iconic game that blends stealth, action, and story in ways that still influence gaming today.Support the Show. We've got merch!Check out the site for some awesome Gen 'S' swag :)

On this episode of March Forth with Mike Bauman, Mike chats with Brent Wyman and Julian Estrada of Corpus! Comprised of Wyman (drums), Estrada (guitar/vocals), and Grant Moore (bass), Corpus is a Black n' Roll band from Murrieta, California. The trio of rockers is part of a growing West Coast collective of California-based bands and friends (Slingshot, Split Image, and Psycho Mantis, among others) that's been turning up the energy both in their tunes and on the stage in live shows across Southern California. After the release of their debut album Death Sequence in June 2022, Corpus dropped their EP Beyond the Grave this past March. Featuring the songs "Realm of Blasphemy" and title track "Beyond the Grave," the EP was mixed and mastered by Low Budget Productions, which is the imprint of Split Image drummer Chris Sia. In this episode, Brent and Julian talk with Mike about how Corpus formed, the positive energy of the collective of bands that they're a part of in Southern California, their Black n' Roll sound, upcoming shows, horror movies and the horror imagery in their band art, and more. A quarter of a century ago, we got some real stealthy classics – some of which have already been covered on this very podcast. Today we're looking at the game from that year that introduced many to the fact that video games can also be a lot like movies. We're going back to 1998 to take a look at the third game in one of the genre's most beloved (and maligned) series. We're talking Metal Gear Solid. On this episode of Stealth Boom Boom, we talk about how director / producer / writer Hideo Kojima, who wanted to make films from a young age, broke into the games industry. We also discuss some of the very explosive, '90s ways this game was marketed. We chat about pre-launch press coverage too, which includes some Resident Evil and Lego mentions, a research trip to see a SWAT team, and some chat on the influence of Yoji Shinkawa. In our review, you'll hear some chat on the excellent Soliton Radar (and why it needs to be excellent, because the game has a fixed camera), fading footprints in the snow, chaff grenades, hiding in cardboard boxes, disappearing enemies, F.R.E.E. (full reactive eyes entertainment), Benny Hill, floopy-doop weapons, mostly great boss fights, Psycho Mantis reading your mind, that opening hour, how anti-war this war game is, Meryl's codec number on the back of case, the briefing tapes, the Yakuza / Like A Dragon games, some of the most verbose and melodramatic people ever, "press the select button," and the alert noise. After all that, the lads take you through what some of the critics were saying about the game around the time it came out, and then they give their final verdicts on whether Metal Gear Solid is a Pass, a Play, or an Espionage Explosion. For those that would like to play along at home, we'll be reviewing Outlast on the next episode of Stealth Boom Boom.IMPORTANT LINKS TO THINGS

As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, "Metal Gear Solid" is often regarded as one of the greatest video games of all time, but it's essential to note that opinions about video games can be highly subjective, and new games may have emerged since then that have also gained widespread acclaim. However, I can provide some reasons why "Metal Gear Solid" has been so highly regarded by many players and critics: Pioneering Stealth Gameplay: "Metal Gear Solid" introduced a revolutionary style of gameplay, emphasizing stealth over brute force. Players were encouraged to avoid direct confrontations and use strategic thinking to sneak past enemies and complete missions. Engaging Storytelling: The game boasts a compelling and intricate storyline, filled with political intrigue, military drama, and philosophical themes. Its cinematic presentation, cutscenes, and voice acting were considered groundbreaking for its time, creating an immersive experience. Memorable Characters: The game features iconic characters like Solid Snake, Revolver Ocelot, Gray Fox, and Psycho Mantis, each with their distinct personalities and memorable moments that resonate with players. Innovative Gameplay Mechanics: "Metal Gear Solid" introduced unique gameplay mechanics, such as the use of the radar system, boss battles, and the necessity to interact with the environment and NPCs in creative ways. Strategic Depth: The game encouraged players to think strategically and consider various approaches to accomplish their objectives. This open-ended design gave players a sense of agency and freedom. Cultural Impact: "Metal Gear Solid" has had a significant cultural impact on the video game industry, inspiring numerous games, books, comics, and even films. Hideo Kojima's Vision: The game's creator, Hideo Kojima, is known for his creative and innovative approach to game design. His passion and attention to detail have resonated with fans and contributed to the game's success. Nostalgia and Legacy: For many gamers, "Metal Gear Solid" holds a special place in their hearts as a game that defined their childhood or gaming experiences. This nostalgia contributes to its enduring popularity and reputation. Remember that opinions about video games can vary, and while "Metal Gear Solid" is highly regarded by many, others may have different preferences or opinions on what makes a game the greatest. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/talkinbout/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/talkinbout/support

On this episode of March Forth with Mike Bauman, Mike chats with Chris Sia, Joey Marsh, and Dylan Baumgartner! Chris plays drums in the California-based crossover hardcore band Split Image, while Joey plays guitar in the California-based metal band Psycho Mantis. Dylan is the creative force behind Reelverse Productions, and also does guitar and vocals in the California-based indie band Slingshot. You might think you haven't heard The Mad Capsule Markets before, but if you played Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 then you have. Not me though. I dropped out after THPS2 so Mad Caps were new to me. I don't even think I had seen their name written anywhere. Luckily, Psychonaut has been a fan for two decades now so he'll guide us through the album. They played Ozzfest, Download Fest, Fuji Rock, supported RATM and Fear Factory and those who love them absolutely love them so they are worth checking out. Meet Jeremiah, a self-styled auteur with a love for filmmaking but a seeming aversion to editing. Together with Troy, a paranormal investigator who is afraid of the dark, and his girlfriend Ashley, a woman who is nothing less or more than whelmed by the experience, the three hapless investigators will explore the second-most haunted house in Texas. Thrill as they use state-of-the-art gaming technology from 2005 to paint a skeleton on a large bouncy ball! Chill as they enter a psychedelic room or a psycho manic room or a Psycho Mantis room or whatever it’s called and see definitive proof of the paranormal that they didn’t bother to film! The boss battles with Psycho Mantis and Sniper Wolf, and the torture and cell sequence. We talk about video games, robots, AI, and laundry detergent in this episode. Matt intelligently condenses his feelings regarding Nier: Automata and XCOM 2 while Bob struggles mightily to make a single coherent point about the ancient Chinese game of Go. Tune in for one of the last missives from before the robots took over!
The most hotly anticipated episode 3 in games since that other hotly anticipated episode 3. "Is Norman Reedus conventionally attractive?" This is the main questioned plaguing Séan and Anna this week - concerns regarding Psycho Mantis and his creepy powers placed entirely on the back burner.
*Bleet Bleet* Colonel, two nerds are talking about my game, Metal Gear Solid from 1998. Remember, the iconic stealth game starring me, Solid Snake? Yeah, Colonel, they’re talking about all of it. The daring mission to thwart a nuclear terrorist threat, the complex twists and turns of a hidden conspiracy, the unique blend of high tech sci-fi with supernatural elements, and even that cyborg ninja! Psycho Mantis? Of course they talk about Psycho Mantis. That part was crazy. I dunno why I’m listening to it. I’m Solid Snake, I lived it. But if any other listeners what to hear about the game that kickstarted one of the biggest franchises in the past decade, this is a pretty good place to do it. Jokes? Colonel, on the battlefield, no one has any jokes. I mean, these guys do, but they’re just a couple of goofballs with a podcast. They don’t know what it means to be a soldier… Anyway, talk to you later, Colonel. Love you too. Bye.

SynTalk thinks about narratives & stories, while constantly wondering whether it is the stories that ‘make us up’ and give us our self-hood. We delve into the worlds of literature, film making, video games, philosophy, cognitive sciences, and linguistics to explore why & how we tell & understand stories. The concepts are derived off / from Aristotle, Coleridge, Diderot, Georges Polti, Hitchcock, Labov, E M Forster, Lumière brothers, de Beauvoir, Augusto Boal, Chomsky, Salim-Javed, David Lodge, & Dennett, among others. How identity, time, memory, & emotions are knotted together by fiction. Is story telling like a flight simulator, with most of the rewards but none of the risk? How narratives however, are not synonymous with fiction and, cover both fact & fiction. Do we remember narratively, & create causal links (with mnemonic durability) between the past, present and the possible futures? The difference of a story from a (film) script, & the importance of the dramatic centre? Is narrative experience a (playful) exploration of the space of possibilities – i.e., is all fiction a game? How incompleteness is also a valid possibility in narratives. Why are morals so critical in any satisfying story? How important is it to have a sense of the ending, & how can one return the narrative time to the present? And, in the face of the crisis of our death, is our life more like episodic TV serials, rather than a Greek tragedy? Is lying or cheating a related ability to telling stories? Are stories (video games) more about tying (dying) and untying (undying)? Are there cultures without stories? How there are real physiological reactions and a willing suspension of disbelief on seeing (say) a film in a dark theatre. How can a screenwriter be moved to tears by her own story? Why can’t there be stories without characters or emotions? Are there only a finite number of plots or narratives? What do you see when you look into the mirror in a first-person shooter game? Is there a serial killer inside you? The links between ‘queen died’, 36, spect-actor, chaos, Gilgamesh, Spiderman, Flower, Lagaan, Alzheimer’s, Max Payne, jumping over the chair, alienation, Psycho Mantis, & cheat codes. How are we able to create stories, but are not able to count the number of words in our head? Is social reality the most fictionalized, & is monologue always secondary to collaborative dialogue in story telling? Why aren’t video games laugh-out-aloud funny, & does it have anything to do with the fact that you can’t tickle yourself? Is the future of fiction likely to involve a range of affects & small scale emotions? Can the story strike back at the player (or the reader)? The SynTalkrs are: Dr. Souvik Mukherjee (game studies, literature, Presidency University, Kolkata), Prof. Rukmini Bhaya Nair (linguistics, narrative theory, IIT Delhi, New Delhi), & Anjum Rajabali (screenwriting, Mumbai).
What’s crappening in this episode: Public apology to Delaware, Quaker State, Me Without You, Station, Psycho Mantis, 40 tallboys of Surge, baby carrots, corn maize, buffalo and bison, stop talking about Back to the Future.
