Tonight's guest comes to us from Athens, Greece. In this firsthand account, Greek radio operator Polo Spentzos recounts an extraordinary encounter in the heart of the Bermuda Triangle. Aboard the merchant vessel M/V Pothiti in the autumn of 1978, Spentzos and his crew witnessed a large glowing cloud-wrapped object and two smaller orbs hovering above the Atlantic, followed by an even stranger phenomenon where time itself began to unravel. Tragically, since the mid-ninth century at least, holy communion, which is intended to bring Christ's people together, has often been a source of division. Si no se produce ningún cambio de última hora, el viernes 25 será mi último día de trabajo. Y, en principio, estaremos cuatro semanas en España. Así que, estoy deseando que llegue ese momento. Espero que tú también tengas tiempo para relajarte y disfrutar durante estos meses. Mientras tanto, seguimos hablando de temas interesantes, como el que vamos a tratar hoy gracias a la noticia que he seleccionado para ti. Esa información habla de los microplásticos. No sé si alguna vez te has planteado de dónde provienen los microplásticos que podemos encontrar en el mar, en los alimentos o, incluso, en el aire que respiramos. Bueno, pues vamos a profundizar un poco en ello antes de escuchar la noticia. En primer lugar, los microplásticos son partículas de plástico extremadamente pequeñas, de menos de 5 milímetros de tamaño, que están presentes en muchos espacios de nuestra vida sin que nos demos cuenta. Este problema comenzó a aparecer junto con el auge o el aumento de los plásticos de un solo uso y también con la utilización de nuevos materiales sintéticos. Muchos microplásticos están formados por el deterioro de plásticos más grandes, como botellas, redes de pesca o envases. El sol, el aire, el paso del tiempo y el oleaje deshacen esos objetos de plástico en partículas cada vez más pequeñas. De esa forma, sin que podamos verlos, porque son muy pequeños, esos microplásticos llegan a los ríos, a los lagos, a los mares… y entran en la cadena alimentaria de animales marinos, peces y, finalmente, de los seres humanos. Pero el problema va más lejos: el microplástico también se desplaza en suspensión en el aire, aumentando así nuestra exposición a esas partículas diminutas. Lo que más preocupa a los científicos es que junto a los microplásticos viajan otras partículas de sustancias tóxicas, como metales pesados, pesticidas o compuestos que interfieren con el funcionamiento de nuestro organismo, de nuestro cuerpo. Además, según cuentan los expertos en la materia, el microplástico tiene una extraordinaria resistencia a la degradación, así que permanecerá en el medio ambiente mucho más tiempo que nosotros mismos, aumentando así el problema de generación en generación. Pero todo esto no significa que el problema no tenga solución. Hay soluciones. Por ejemplo, la reducción del plástico de un solo uso, el reciclado, el apoyo a nuevos materiales más sostenibles y el compromiso de empresas, gobiernos y ciudadanos pueden marcar una enorme diferencia. Recuerdo que hace años en España se prohibió regalar bolsas de plástico en los supermercados. Antes era lo normal. Aún así, casi todos los alimentos que compramos están envueltos en plástico, y cada semana llenamos bolsas y bolsas de basura con esos plásticos. Este es un tema que nos afecta a todos, y que podemos solucionar si trabajamos juntos para buscar alternativas más respetuosas con el medio ambiente y más seguras para nuestra salud, que es lo más importante que tenemos, porque sin salud no se puede disfrutar de la vida. Dicho todo esto, ya estamos preparados para escuchar la noticia de Radio Nacional de España. Aparecen cuatro voces distintas, algo que siempre nos gusta mucho, ¿verdad? En este caso, son el presentador el informativo, el periodista que amplía los datos y dos médicos. Así que, presta atención durante los próximos segundos para no perderte ningún detalle. Aquí va. “En este Congreso se habla de los retos sanitarios de la sociedad y uno de ellos, ustedes lo saben bien, son los microplásticos. Se cuelan en los alimentos y provocan efecto en nuestro cuerpo. Luis Vallés, ¿cómo lo hacen? Buenas tardes. Buenas tardes. Hay que tener en cuenta que ingerimos al año entre 78.000 y 200.000 partículas de microplásticos y estamos expuestos a 12.000 sustancias químicas del envasado de medicamentos, alimentos y compuestos del medio ambiente. Y esto puede provocar cambios hormonales en nuestro organismo, sobre todo en etapas críticas como el embarazo, la infancia o la pubertad. Puede haber alteraciones endocrinas, efectos cancerígenos, enfermedades respiratorias, etc. Para reducir riesgos, los expertos quieren cambiar el paso y apuestan por envases de vidrio. Eso elimina de raíz cualquier vestigio de material orgánico, como son estos disruptores hormonales, que son siempre materiales orgánicos. Desde aquí, pues, consejo de salud pública. Si son de llevarse la comida al trabajo... ...Vamos a promover el uso, por ejemplo, de un táper de cristal pues antes que un táper de plástico. Así cuidamos de nuestra salud.” Si no estoy equivocado, la palabra táper viene de una marca comercial que se vende en un centenar de países de todo el mundo. Y bueno, aunque aparece al final de la noticia, si no te importa, esta vez voy a empezar por ahí. El táper es un recipiente, normalmente de plástico o de vidrio, usado para llevar o guardar comida. Ejemplos: Me llevo la comida al trabajo en un táper. Es mejor usar un táper de cristal para calentar en el microondas. Y ahora volvemos al comienzo de la noticia para hablar de los retos. Un reto es un desafío, algo que resulta difícil y que exige esfuerzo para superarlo. Ejemplos: El cambio climático es el mayor reto de nuestra época. Aprender un idioma nuevo es un reto apasionante. Pasamos ahora al verbo colarse, que en este contexto significa introducirse o pasar sin ser visto o sin permiso. Ejemplos: Los microplásticos logran colarse en los alimentos que comemos. El agua de lluvia puede colarse por las rendijas de la ventana. Otro verbo, ingerir. Significa tomar algo por la boca, tragarlo. Ejemplos: Es peligroso ingerir alimentos en mal estado. Cada día ingerimos agua y nutrientes necesarios para vivir. En cuanto a la palabra envasado, se refiere a meter algo en un recipiente o envoltorio para conservarlo. Ejemplos: El envasado de los medicamentos debe garantizar su seguridad. Prefiero comprar productos frescos en lugar de alimentos envasados. Vamos ahora con algo muy serio, los cambios hormonales, que son las variaciones en los niveles de hormonas que pueden producir efectos en el cuerpo. Ejemplos: Durante la pubertad hay muchos cambios hormonales. El embarazo provoca cambios hormonales importantes en las mujeres. Y otro de los efectos de los microplásticos son las alteraciones endocrinas, o sea, problemas o cambios en el funcionamiento de las glándulas que producen hormonas. Ejemplo: Las alteraciones endocrinas afectan al crecimiento y al metabolismo. Luego encontramos la expresión cambiar el paso, que significa modificar la forma de actuar, tomar un nuevo rumbo. Ejemplos: Ante la crisis, las empresas deben cambiar el paso y buscar nuevas soluciones. Los expertos proponen cambiar el paso en el uso de plásticos. La siguiente palabra creo que la conoces. El vidrio es un material duro, frágil y transparente que se usa, por ejemplo, para hacer botellas o ventanas. Es como el cristal, pero algo más resistente. Ejemplos: Prefiero los vasos de vidrio a los de plástico. Los envases de vidrio son más ecológicos. Por otra parte, el término vestigio significa rastro o señal que queda de algo que ha desaparecido. Ejemplos: No quedó vestigio del edificio antiguo tras el derribo. El uso de vidrio elimina cualquier vestigio de microplásticos. Y, por último, un disruptor hormonal es una sustancia que altera el funcionamiento normal del sistema hormonal. Algo es disruptor cuando produce un cambio grande, cuando interrumpe el funcionamiento normal de algo. Ejemplos: Algunos plásticos contienen disruptores hormonales. Los disruptores hormonales pueden afectar el desarrollo infantil. El presentador del informativo nos cuenta que en un evento donde tienen lugar distintas conferencias se debaten los desafíos sanitarios que enfrenta la sociedad. Y uno de ellos, como es bien conocido por todo el mundo, son los microplásticos. Estas partículas minúsculas se infiltran en los alimentos y generan consecuencias en el organismo. A continuación, el periodista nos ofrece datos concretos. Por ejemplo, que consumimos al año entre 78.000 y 200.000 partículas de microplásticos y que hay 12.000 agentes químicos presentes en los envases de fármacos, alimentos y otros productos del entorno. Así que, todo esto puede dar lugar a alteraciones hormonales en el cuerpo, en particular en fases sensibles como el embarazo, la niñez o la adolescencia. El primer médico señala que pueden aparecer disfunciones endocrinas, impactos cancerígenos o afecciones en la respiración. Para minimizar los riesgos, los especialistas proponen un cambio de paradigma y recomiendan el uso de recipientes de vidrio. Y es que, además de los microplásticos, hay otras cosas que consumimos sin darnos cuenta y que pueden tener un impacto negativo en nuestro organismo. Por ejemplo: Pesticidas: Utilizados para eliminar plagas en los cultivos, algunos de ellos pueden dejar residuos en las frutas y las verduras que llegan a nuestra mesa. Antibióticos: Empleados en la ganadería para prevenir o tratar enfermedades en los animales, sus restos pueden aparecer en la carne, el huevo o la leche, aumentando así el riesgo de que aparezcan resistencias a los antibióticos en los humanos. Conservantes, colorantes y aditivos: Sustancias añadidas para dar color, prolongar la conservación o mejorar el sabor de los alimentos, que en algunos casos están asociados a problemas de salud, como las alergias, el asma o la fragilidad del sistema inmunológico. Metales pesados: Como el mercurio en algunos pescados, el plomo o el arsénico presentes en el arroz o el agua, que si se acumulan en el organismo pueden resultar tóxicos y tener consecuencias neurológicas o renales a largo plazo. Este tema nos muestra que lo que comemos va más lejos que el simple acto de alimentarnos: tiene consecuencias en nuestra salud, en el medio ambiente y en el futuro de las generaciones que vendrán. Soluciones: ser más conscientes, leer las etiquetas, buscar alimentos de proximidad o sin tantos aditivos, apoyar a los pequeños grupos de agricultura ecológica y llevar una dieta más variada. Pero a veces no tenemos tiempo para hacer esas cosas, y en otras ocasiones lo que no tenemos es el dinero suficiente, porque los productos ecológicos suelen ser bastante más caros. Así que, cada uno haga lo que pueda. Mientras tanto, repasamos las palabras y expresiones que hemos aprendido hoy. -Táper: un recipiente, normalmente de plástico o de vidrio, usado para llevar o guardar comida. -Reto: un desafío, algo que resulta difícil y que exige esfuerzo para superarlo. -Colarse: introducirse o pasar sin ser visto o sin permiso. -Ingerir: tomar algo por la boca, tragarlo. -Envasado: meter algo en un recipiente o envoltorio para conservarlo. -Cambios hormonales: variaciones en los niveles de hormonas que pueden producir efectos en el cuerpo. -Alteraciones endocrinas: problemas o cambios en el funcionamiento de las glándulas que producen hormonas. -Cambiar el paso: modificar la forma de actuar, tomar un nuevo rumbo. -Vidrio: material duro, frágil y transparente que se usa, por ejemplo, para hacer botellas o ventanas. Es como el cristal, pero algo más resistente. -Vestigio: rastro o señal que queda de algo que ha desaparecido. -Disruptor hormonal: sustancia que altera el funcionamiento normal del sistema hormonal. Algo es disruptor cuando produce un cambio grande, cuando interrumpe el funcionamiento normal de algo. Muy bien, pues ya hemos terminado por hoy. "Set in Guadeloupe, New Orleans, the surrounding Louisiana plantations, and briefly in other areas of the South, this is a key text of the history of slavery in Louisiana and the Deep South.There is obviously a difference between memoirs and novels in terms of perception and claims to nonfiction. However, in U.S. antislavery literature, both usually attempted to appeal to the same white mainstream readership (with the exception in this case of Testut's audience being French-speaking and largely Catholic). Most claimed realism; even novels asserted that they depicted events that had happened or were familiar, even if the characters were fictional." "Heidi's research and teaching ranges through 19th-21st century American literature, with specializations in the Japanese American incarceration of World War II, law and literature, and the Cold War period. She has also published on Walt Whitman and antislavery literature, including the partial translation of Louisiana Francophone novel Le Vieux Salomon, and collaborated on interdisciplinary environmental research" (Kim). A common and reliable formation involves having one player, typically the best ball-handler (point guard), inbound the basketball quickly before the defense can get set. Two other players, often the shooting guard and small forward, should sprint to the sideline areas near the free-throw line extended, creating width and providing immediate outlets. The power forward should flash to the middle of the court, near the free-throw line, presenting a crucial target in the vulnerable heart of the press. The center's primary role is to act as a safety valve, staying deep down the court as a long pass option if the initial outlets are denied, which helps to keep the defense honest and prevents them from overplaying the ball-side. Once the initial setup is established, the goal is to advance the ball with sharp, decisive passes rather than risky dribbling. The inbounder's first look should be to the sideline player on the ball side. The player receiving the pass should look immediately to the middle of the court to the power forward, as attacking the middle is the quickest way to break down a press. If the middle is not open, the player should look to pass up the sideline or reverse the ball quickly to the inbounder, who should have stepped onto the court after passing. The key principles are to maintain spacing, get the ball to the middle of the floor, and advance the ball with the pass, forcing the defense to shift and open up lanes to attack the basket for an easy scoring opportunity on the other end. When 24-year-old Belgian backpacker Davine Arckens reached out to a man on Gumtree about working on his farm, she was excited. The 88 days of labour would mean she could stay in Australia on a tourist visa for an extra year. She couldn’t wait to spend more time in a country she thought was safe and full of nice people. When Davine met the man, it didn’t take long for her to realise she’d made a terrible mistake. What followed was two harrowing days where she was held against her will and an escape that made national headlines. Walkley award-winning journalist Richard Guilliatt reported on the story, and he joins Jessie Stephens to walk us through it. Today on the show is Aydon Stefanopoulos!Aydon is a graduated senior out of Los Gatos High School in California. He will be a rising freshman in the fall at UCLA. Aydon holds PRs of 1:51 for 800m, 4:06 for 1600m, 8:57 for 3200m, and 14:52 for 5K XC. He is the 2023 CIF D2 XC State Champion and a 2023 NXN Qualifier. Aydon and I had one of the most unpolished, raw, candid conversations I have ever had on The Sunday Shakeout. This was not an episode filled with positivity and glorified realities of the mental and physical side of our sport. We dive into the nitty gritty side of the sport of distance-running. As a junior, Aydon became a state champion and ran at Nike Cross Nationals (NXN). This set a high bar to live up to in his senior year. Unfortunately, however, Aydon has struggled with injuries and underperforming this past year. Not only did he fail to win state XC and qualify for NXN, he did not have the redemption that he wanted this track season, despite setting PRs in multiple distances.Aydon, in this episode, openly admits his struggles with confidence, self-doubt, and the mental toll of injuries and underperformance. Rather than focusing on just accomplishments, he highlights his mistakes, regrets, and the emotional fallout of underachieving. He talks about being "not proud" of parts of his senior year, showing maturity and humility. Now you might be asking: "Why would I listen to such a melancholy podcast episode?"Because despite the setbacks, disappointment, and raw realities presented in my conversation with Aydon, he has had a few mindset shifts:Aydon has moved from chasing perfection to valuing long-term health and enjoyment of the sport. Through injuries and setbacks, Aydon shares interesting insights on the importance of under-training. Sounds crazy. But worth a listen. Aydon's excitement about the next chapter at UCLA stems from a desire to learn, adapt, and improve, rather than prove anything. His ability to embrace uncertainty is instructive for all of us in the pursuit of excellence in our careers. Hopefully this episode is a refreshing change, one that opens eyes and serves as an inspirational reminder of the raw realities of the sport, perhaps an opportunity for redirection for you in your life.
