A late-night drive turns terrifying when a pale, blank-faced cyclist blocks the road—and the dashcam conveniently erases the footage. A horrifying Air bnb experience that sends a family packing at 4am thanks to clapping in the walls, locked rooms with glowing red light, and crosses flipped upside down. Cryptids and possible government secrets lurk around mysterious cabins, strange animal behavior, and something watching from the canyon shadows. In 1975, New York City ran out of money. For a decade it had managed to pay for its hundreds of thousands of city employees and robust social services by taking on billions of dollars in debt. But eventually investors were no longer willing to lend the city any more money. New York teetered on the edge of bankruptcy — the city shuttered more than a dozen firehouses, teachers went on strike and garbage piled up in the streets.Rescuing the city required the cooperation of the state of New York, the banks, the city workers unions, giant property owners and … the White House. In 1993, more than 10 years into the AIDS epidemic, the Metropolitan Community Church of San Francisco (MCC-SF) tries to remember all they've lost. We think about remembering too after encountering an archive of 1,200 cassette recordings of this queer church's services during the height of the epidemic. "Take On Me" by A-ha is an iconic hit of the 1980s. It came out in October 1985 with an equally iconic music video that helped define the age of MTV. It hit #1 in the US and in countries all over the world. And it's still massively popular today. It currently has over two and a half billion streams on Spotify. So, with all of that, it's easy to imagine that this was all inevitable. But actually, the song took so many steps and missteps before it became the hit that everybody knows. I talked to Paul Waaktaar-Savoy from A-ha, who wrote the original bones of the song back when he was a teenager in Norway, years before it came out. The song actually came out and flopped TWICE in the UK, before it found a foothold in the US. So for this episode, Paul took me through the whole history of the song, and all the different versions that existed. And he told me how he and his bandmates, Magne Furuholmen and Morten Harket, pushed and pushed and persevered.
