The holidays can be a season of joy, but for some families, they come wrapped in worry, fear, and unseen struggles. In this "Best of Raising Godly Girls" episode, we revisit Episode 223: "How to Support Your Daughter Through Suicide, Self-Harm, and Mental Health Struggles" with Dr. Jessica Peck, also known as "Dr. Nurse Mama." Originally aired on May 29, 2025, this episode offers practical, faith-filled guidance for parents navigating one of the most tender and frightening seasons of parenting. Melissa Bearden and Rachael Culpepper open the conversation with heart and honesty, reminding listeners that God equips parents to shepherd their daughters even in the darkest valleys. Dr. Peck shares compassionate strategies for recognizing warning signs, building trust, and creating safe spaces where difficult conversations can take place—because the most important healing often begins with being seen, heard, and loved. This episode is a gentle call to action: the holidays are not a time to ignore or delay addressing your daughter's mental health struggles. Instead, it is a time to step forward in courage, anchored in God's wisdom and grace. Parents will be encouraged to walk alongside their daughters with a balance of truth, empathy, and prayerful guidance, modeling the steadfast love of Christ even in moments of fear or uncertainty. Scripture References: Psalm 34:18 Romans 15:13 Three Things to Remember: God equips and sustains parents called to guide daughters through seasons of deep struggle. Creating a safe, trusting environment opens the door for healing and honest conversation. The best time to walk in truth, love, and prayer is now—not later, not when it feels convenient. This "Best Of" episode is an invitation to pause, pray, and listen closely—God is present, and His Spirit brings hope even in the midst of pain. Have you ever felt stuck in life, wondering where your true path may be? Although we often feel like we should know exactly what we're doing and where we're going in life, I've found – from personal and professional experience – that it's quite normal to get confused and stuck at least once along the way. Wouldn't it be lovely if you could discover a map for navigating life's challenges? And wouldn't it be awesome if you could tune into yourself and embrace the inherent, precious gifts inside of you? If this sounds interesting, you've found the right space. I'm joined by a delightful guest, Nid Ra, who specializes in helping others tune into their true path with clarity, wisdom, and grace. Topics discussed include mindfulness, transformation, soul, positive change, self-love, Awakening Spiral, challenges, inner change, calmness, trust, and vitality. Please note that this episode may contain sensitive material; listener discretion is advised.Emergency Assistance Note: If you or someone you know needs immediate support, please call your emergency services. In this Healthy Waves conversation from the Healthy Mind By Avik™ ecosystem, host Sana and guest Kristen Crabtree deconstruct the usual script on mental health, mental strength and resilience. They unpack what happens when you are praised for holding everything together while silently disappearing behind roles like good wife, good mother, good employee. Kristen shares how 22 years in a psychologically abusive marriage, a bipolar diagnosis and trauma therapy in 2021 forced a complete reboot of her inner operating system. Together they explore how real mental strength starts with identity excavation. Not more grinding, but finally hearing your own voice under family rules, cultural conditioning and performance masks. They talk about privilege and survival, why telling people to just align with their true self can sound unrealistic for single parents and people in unsafe situations, and why boundaries can be a pragmatic first step when you have zero capacity. If you are tired of confusing survival with living, this episode gives you a sharp, honest lens on mental health, women's resilience, boundaries and rebuilding life on your own terms. About the Guest: Kristen Crabtree is an author, creator of the Paramore Paradox ecosystem and a certified trauma informed divorce coach. After decades in a psychologically abusive marriage and a long journey with bipolar disorder, trauma therapy and meditation helped her reclaim her voice and identity. Her book Be the You That is More You Than You Have Ever Beenoffers a structured framework for excavating your own story, identifying the roles and artifacts that shape you and stepping into what she calls your True You 2.0. Today she helps people move from invisibility and self doubt into clarity, self trust and aligned decision making. Key Takeaways: Mental health often erodes when we shrink behind roles and expectations. Kristen explains how constantly performing as the responsible one while ignoring your own needs creates inner chaos and long term psychological strain. Most people mistake mental strength for holding everything together and never asking for help. Kristen reframes true mental resilience as hearing your inner voice, accepting it and making decisions that align with who you really are. Kristen's turning point came through trauma therapy and meditation. Both helped her recognize the psychological abuse in her marriage, process earlier sexual trauma and reconnect with a self she had buried for decades. Her book uses an excavation metaphor. You audit the artifacts of your life, roles, traumas and stories, then intentionally design your True You 2.0, a future identity that expresses your real values instead of inherited scripts. The conversation names privilege directly. Kristen acknowledges that some people do not have the time, money or safety to do deep identity work, and that telling them to just align with their true self can sound tone deaf. Boundaries show up as a practical first lever. Kristen describes learning to feel in her body when a boundary is crossed and how protecting that line built self worth, self respect and the stability required for bigger life changes. Both Sana and Kristen emphasize that humans are messy by default. You are not broken or something to fix. The work is stripping away noise, shame and other people's blueprints so you can design a life that actually fits you. Send us a textMost of us are one decision away from giving up. We're at the breaking point, questioning if we're qualified, if our pain has purpose, if it's even worth continuing. And in that moment—when you're about to quit—everything changes. Or nothing does. It depends on what you choose next.In this life-altering episode, mental health professional Alison Lager and voice coach Matt Berthot sit down to discuss the exact moment when most people walk away from their calling. They've both been there. Alison survived her husband's suicide, childhood abuse, eating disorders, and a murder trial. Matt inherited generational trauma from his grandfather's suicide and his father's alcoholism. Both were broken. Both were about to quit. Both chose differently. And they're here to tell you: The moment you're about to quit is exactly when you must keep going. But they're not just offering motivation. They're offering a framework—one rooted in neuroscience, Scripture, and lived experience—for what to do when the eclipse of despair gets too dark to see through. You'll discover:Why "God qualifies the called" means your inadequacy is the invitationHow the suicide mind works (and it's not what you think)The one skill that prevents emotional collapse: emotional sobrietyThe three-step framework that transforms your worst pain into your life's workWhy bigger growth always means bigger storms—and how to prepareThe Hadestown lesson: How to sing your sad song and still find hopeHow to practice resilience in small moments so you have it in big crisesWhat happens when you finally say yes to that small, still voice inside youWhy receiving help is harder than giving it (and why that's destroying you)The difference between reaction and response (it's a 10-second pause)This episode is for anyone standing at the edge. For the burnt-out parent, struggling entrepreneur, the person in crisis. It's for people who've lost people to suicide. It's for people who've thought about it themselves.Alison and Matt aren't here to tell you it gets easier. They're here to tell you it gets meaningful. And that changes everything.
After Philip Shue crashed his car off of highway 10 in Texas, officials were quick to rule his death a suicide. However, evidence such as severed body parts and duct tape on his wrists and ankles lead many others to believe there may be more to the story. If I had to pick one book to gift to every person I met for the rest of my life, it would be The Language of Emotions by Karla McLaren. Karla is the original expert on emotions and frankly, her book helped me go from being someone who got *completely* overwhelmed by emotions like sadness, fear, panic, depression, and anxiety to who I am now: a woman who can flow with her emotions and ultimately, feel far more at peace than I ever have because I "speak" emotion. In this episodes, Karla shared so much of her truly life-changing wisdom with us including: addressing the biggest misunderstanding we all have about emotions: that there are "negative" and "positive" emotionsthe REAL purpose emotions have in our lives (they are not just a nuisance we are meant to "overcome")why we both think that the typical rhetoric you hear in spiritual communities can actually be incredibly detrimental to usthe role emotions are meant to play in helping us grow our businesses, making money and create successwhat messages emotions like anger, shame, anxiety, panic, depression and even suicidal urges have for us and why we *must* learn to interpret these messagesThere aren't words to describe how transformational Karla's work has been on my life. I urge you to buy a copy of The Language of Emotions (paperback so you can highlight, take notes and reference it!!!) She now also has The Power of Emotions at Work, Embracing Anxiety, and The Language of Emotions Workbook! From a “Question and Answer” segment, questions about “Suicide” and “Self-Righteousness” arose needing Godly and Biblical Answers. Let’s consider this today.
Suicide affects every part of society, with around 6,000 deaths in the UK each year and one in four adults having contemplated it, leaving hundreds impacted by each loss. BS 30480 addresses this by providing the UK's first workplace standard on suicide prevention, offering practical guidance to help organizations recognize risk, respond safely, and create supportive, stigma-free environments. In this episode, Matthew speaks to Jamie Compton Rae, Chief Operating Officer at the National Centre for Suicide Prevention Education and Training (NCSPET) and standards-maker involved in the development of BS 30480. They discuss why BS 30480 is a landmark standard, Jamie's role in its development, and the steps organizations should take in their first 100 days of putting the standard into practice.Since it's The Standards Show, Jamie also reflects on his own standards journey – what motivated him to get involved, and what continues to inspire his involvement today.Find out more about the issues raised in this episodeBS 30480 | Suicide and the workplaceGet involved with standardsGet in touch with The Standards Showeducation@bsigroup.comsend a voice messageFind and follow on social mediaX @StandardsShowInstagram @thestandardsshowLinkedIn | The Standards Show

More Americans than ever are going to therapists. Studies reveal that as many as 40 million adults see a therapist. Not surprising then is that prescription pharmaceutical drug use is also soaring. Mental-rest vacation days are becoming job-place normal. But is it all working? Suicide rates are soaring. Depression is everywhere. Emergency room visits for mental trauma are way up. Kids, and women in particular, are more miserable than ever. What to do?! Mark and I chew through the issue of therapy culture. We note how it can be beneficial, why it is beneficial. We also talk about possibilities for local churches to get involved, where and when they can. Should sermons be encouraging therapy sessions? Why, why not? And then, significant to the whole culture, is that the presuppositions of most Psychology programs are indifferent to or opposed to biblical teachings. Come and think and laugh with me and Mark about this intractable issue.
Let Me Be Frank | Bishop Frank Caggiano's Podcast | Diocese of Bridgeport, CT
Since the mailbag was getting fuller than Santa's sack of gifts, we thought Bishop Caggiano should answer some listener questions. Among them are some serious ones, like: …can someone who has committed suicide still go to Heaven? …why do priests wear different colored vestments throughout the year? …what was the most important question that Jesus asked in the Gospels? And there were a couple that were more my speed, like: What is your favorite scary movie? Yeah, I can answer that! Good thing we have the bishop for the toughies. Pax Christi, Steve Lee
If family gatherings leave you feeling drained or like you're reverting to an old version of yourself, you're not alone. EMDR therapist and yoga teacher, Abby Albright, returns to discuss the invisible rules governing dysfunctional family systems and how they intensify during the holidays. We explore six categories of unspoken family rules: emotional (don't feel, don't be sad), need-based (don't need anything), relational (don't rock the boat, don't outshine anyone), role-based, loyalty (protect the family image), and safety rules. These aren't written anywhere, but they live in our bodies and shape how we show up.Abby shares how these patterns create physical tension, why breaking invisible rules feels scary, and practical ways to find choice within challenging family dynamics. We talk about being a pattern breaker and giving yourself permission to show up differently, even in small ways. What You'll Learn:How to recognize the six types of invisible family rulesWhy family gossip reinforces dysfunctional patternsThe gap between family image and realitySmall ways to practice choice during difficult gatheringsWhen to lean into curiosity vs. contain awarenessCheck out Abby's Therapeutic Yoga offerings hereFor more on dysfunctional family dynamics around the holidays, tune into:Family Dysfunction: What It Is and What To Do With ItDysfunctional Family Dynamics & The HolidaysThanks for listening to The Complex Trauma Podcast! This episode with Dr. David McCarty-Caplan touches on so many profound and heartfelt areas, carried by the radical vulnerability, honesty, and compassion he brings to the conversation. David generously shares about his reunion with his Colombian birth family-- first on his own, and later with his children and partner. We explore how his kids embraced reunion and modeled openness, curiosity and love with his family, and how their presence and perspective helped guide and teach him throughout the process. David also reflects on his identity as a Jewish Colombian adoptee and his powerful work community building with and for Jewish adoptees of color. Dr. David McCarty-Caplan BioDr. David McCarty-Caplan (PhD) is a researcher, educator, writer, and consultant whose work sits at the intersection of identity, belonging, and social justice. Born in Bogotá, Colombia and adopted into a white Jewish family in the United States, David's life has been shaped by questions of race, family, and home. These experiences continue to inform his passion for helping adoptees and their families navigate the complex layers of identity, racism, and connection that often accompany adoption. Drawing on his background as a social work researcher and educator, David brings both personal insight and professional rigor to his work with organizations, communities, and families. He is especially interested in how people and institutions can create spaces where all feel seen and valued. David lives in Los Angeles with his wife and their two children, ages 12 and 10. As a husband, father, and adoptee, he is continually exploring what it means to nurture belonging — in his family, in his work, and in the broader world.https://www.shadesofbelonging.com/Co-Hosts: Nari Baker & Robyn ParkMusic: Mike Marlatt & Paul GulledgeAudio Production: Frederico Soler FernándezArtwork: Dalhe KimListen on: iTunes & SpotifyInstagram: @laboroflovepodcastSupport via Venmo: @laboroflovepodcast

Content warning: discussion of suicide Rhonda Mawhood Lee is a priest, spiritual director, and daughter whose mother died by suicide. She knows about complicated grief. Having grown up in a family haunted by self-inflicted death for multiple generations, Rhonda has asked and re-asked the questions for which there are no easy answers. With clarity and candor, she reflects on the unintended consequences of many traditional Christian teachings around suicide. In search of a better way, Lee turns to the communion of saints—a theologically rich concept that Christians can draw on to reframe their relationships with people who have died by suicide, and with those who are at risk of ending their own lives.

We got an update about "aphantasia," the condition where you cannot see mental images, and now we're wondering if we're the weird ones because the way we see the images is apparently strange??? We think we are on the precipice of a scientific discovery that will be named after us. Susie talks about a man who had his wife cryogenically frozen, but now it's awkward because he got a new girlfriend, so hopefully they don't bring the wife back to life or he's going to have a lot of explaining to do. We hear why female scuba divers are better than their male counterparts, and Sarah is soooo happy. We learn about a woman who was stabbed to death (including in the back) and authorities are still claiming it was a suicide. Predictably, Sarah's got a theory. Plus, we learn about a "reparations happy hour" where people of color drink for free thanks to donations from white people who aren't allowed to come, and we debate whether this is a good or bad idea.Brain Candy Podcast Website - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/Brain Candy Podcast Book Recommendations - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/books/Brain Candy Podcast Merchandise - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/candy-store/Brain Candy Podcast Candy Club - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/product/candy-club/Brain Candy Podcast Sponsor Codes - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/support-us/Brain Candy Podcast Social Media & Platforms:Brain Candy Podcast LIVE Interactive Trivia Nights - https://www.youtube.com/@BrainCandyPodcast/streamsBrain Candy Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastHost Susie Meister Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterHost Sarah Rice Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBrain Candy Podcast on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodBrain Candy Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/braincandy (JOIN FREE - TONS OF REALITY TV CONTENT)Brain Candy Podcast Sponsors, partnerships, & Products that we love:Get 40% off your first box PLUS get a free item in every box for life. Have you ever found yourself immediately reaching for a coping behavior like scrolling or stress eating, without even realizing what emotion triggered it? That could be a sign of emotional repression—a survival mechanism that protects you, but at a huge cost to your health and boundaries. In part one of this essential two-part series on emotional health and post-traumatic growth, co-hosts Elisabeth Kristof (founder of BrainBased.com) and Jennifer Wallace (Neurosomatic Psychedelic Preparation and Integration Guide) dive into the powerful energy of anger. They are joined by their friend and lead educator, Matt Bush, an international applied neurology expert and founder of Next Level Neuro. This conversation explores how a lifetime of suppressed anger, tied to the fight response and complex trauma, creates a toxic internal environment, linking chronic stress to diagnoses like Stage 3 cancer. You will learn the crucial difference between conscious suppression and unconscious repression, how this shifts your entire neurological perception of the world, and what safe, structured steps you can take to begin discharging this vital energy from your body. This episode is for anyone who struggles with quick reactivity, feeling disconnected from what they feel, or understanding the deep mind-body connection of stored emotion. Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction: anger, fight response, and health diagnosis. 01:37 Emotional expression & its vitality for nervous system health and reducing stress. 07:06 Perceived vs. real threat and the roots of repression in childhood. 16:45 Defining suppression versus repression as protective mechanisms. 23:42 The neurological and physiological consequences of repression. 35:34 Anger as a natural response to a boundary violation and safe release practices. 42:47 The link between repressed anger, boundaries, and immune system dysfunction. 48:28 Rewiring for a new homeostasis and the role of epigenetics. Key Takeaways: Emotional repression—the unconscious blocking of emotions—is a trauma-informed survival strategy that traps the nervous system in a constant state of threat response, leading to the buildup of toxic stress hormones. Repression is often tied to complex post-traumatic stress, where a child's nervous system was unable to process big emotions and lacked co-regulation from caregivers, learning that emotional expression was unsafe or threatening. When repressed, anger (the natural response to a boundary violation) becomes internalized, resulting in behaviors like overworking, people-pleasing, and, ultimately, immune system dysregulation (e.g., autoimmune conditions). Chronic repression can alter your entire perception of the world, making everyday situations feel threatening (non-cognitive), and driving unconscious avoidance or numbing behaviors (e.g., binging, workaholism, mindless scrolling). Healing involves creating a safe and structured environment (alone or with a trusted person/coach) to gradually access and discharge emotional energy, using neurosomatic intelligence tools to repattern the nervous system. I lost my brother to suicide and my dad to cancer only eighteen months apart. Those were the hardest moments of my life and they changed everything. Grief stripped life down to what actually matters and forced me to grow in ways I never expected. This episode is a raw look at loss, healing, and the hard truths that shape you when life breaks you open. If you're navigating grief or heavy emotions, this will help you feel less alone. In this episode you'll learn:
Do you ever feel like you weren't meant to be here—like you're the unwanted guest at a party? I've felt that most of my life. I'm sharing the shift that pulled me back from the edge: making a violent commitment to living—taking suicide off the table (Plan B) so I could finally go all-in on Plan A. I cover the “burn the ships” mindset, the difference between having a thought and entertaining a thought, and why small coping tips can feel absurd when the pain is massive—plus what to do instead. If you're in crisis (U.S.): call/text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org. Personal Tragedy and the Dacha Library: Colleague Geoffrey Roberts recounts that following the suicide of his wife Nadia in 1932, Stalin became more isolated, moving his routine to the Blizhnyaya dacha, which became the "center of gravity" for his books eventually numbering around 25,000, suggesting that like Machiavelli, Stalin felt most among friends when surrounded by his library. 1934
By January 2007, all five suspects were in custody. Prosecutors had charged them with 46 counts including murder, rape, kidnapping, and robbery. Between 2008-2010, four separate trials resulted in convictions. It seemed like justice had finally been served and the families could breathe. Then a scandal involving the judge, who presided over the trials, would rock their worlds. Young men are in freefall — and society's paying the price. Scott Galloway is here to explain the data behind the collapse and offer potential solutions.Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1250What We Discuss with Scott Galloway:Young men are experiencing an unprecedented decline, with higher rates of suicide, addiction, homelessness, and incarceration than any other demographic. Yet discussing this crisis triggers reflexive pushback, even though addressing it doesn't diminish the legitimate struggles women and minorities continue to face. When boys lose male role models through death, divorce, or abandonment, the outcomes are devastating. They become more likely to be incarcerated than graduate college, unlike girls, who maintain consistent outcomes in single-parent homes. Boys are neurologically and emotionally more fragile than we've been willing to admit.Elite universities have abandoned their mission as public servants and repositioned themselves as luxury brands, creating artificial scarcity that's pulling up the ladders of opportunity. America's ethos should be watering as many acorns as possible, not sorting teenagers into winners and losers at 18.The three drivers of romantic attraction for men are signaling resources, intellect (best communicated through humor), and kindness — and kindness is the most underleveraged. Women instinctively seek mates who'll protect them during vulnerability — being kind to strangers signals good character far more than being nice to her.Put away the scorecard in your relationships. Stop tracking who gave more and instead ask: what kind of friend, partner, or son do I want to be? The happiest people aren't those who are loved most, but those who find others who let them give the most love. And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps!
