In this special bonus episode of the Science of Skin Podcast, Dr. Patti Farris sits down with Dr. Sandra (Sandy) Johnson — private practice dermatologist in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and member of the American Academy of Dermatology's Board of Directors — for an urgent conversation on the CMS reimbursement cuts threatening the future of dermatology.Dr. Johnson breaks down the three major proposals from CMS that could devastate dermatology practices nationwide: a proposed cut to the 25-modifier that would penalize combined evaluation-and-procedure visits, a potential overhaul of indirect practice expense calculations that could hit dermatology harder than most specialties, and an effort to remove the AMA's RUC representation — stripping physicians of their voice in how reimbursement values are set.Beyond the policy breakdown, Dr. Johnson shares what the AAD is doing to fight back and exactly what members can do right now: submitting the 30-second advocacy letter through Voter Voice, rallying staff and patients to do the same, donating to SkinPAC, and attending this year's Legislative Conference in Washington, DC before the mid-September deadline. This is a call to action for the entire dermatology community — because a united voice is the specialty's best defense.Topics covered:The proposed 9–25% CMS reimbursement cutsThe 25-modifier and what it means for combined visitsIndirect practice expenses and why dermatology may be hit hardestEfforts to remove the AMA from the RUCHow to take action: Voter Voice, SkinPAC, and the AAD Legislative Conference
Police say license plate reader cameras like Flock are an important tool for solving crimes. But a new Washington Post investigation found dozens of cases where officers have been accused of using license plate readers for unauthorized purposes, including tracking exes and spouses. Today we're joined by Washington Post technology reporter Douglas MacMillan, whose investigation uncovered some of those abuses and has already prompted police investigations and new safeguards from Flock itself. Politics makes strange bedfellows, and AI is making things stranger still. AI data centers are just one of the many ways that artificial intelligence and its by products are taking an increasingly large role in American politics at every level and creating new and bizarre alliances even among traditionally opposing factions. WIRED's Molly Taft joins David Rothkopf to examine the rapid evolution of our politics — and why things are only getting weirder. Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes.Marvel left D23 with a full X-Men cast, a Doomsday sizzle reel, and a VisionQuest trailer, but not one new Disney+ series. In the August 20 edition of What I'm Hearing, Puck's Julia Alexander wrote that multiple live-action Marvel series are quietly in development with announcements expected soon, which cuts directly against the last few weeks of reporting that had Marvel retreating from live-action TV entirely after VisionQuest lands October 14. Worth stressing that this is a single paywalled item with no titles, no dates, and no talent attached, and Variety, Deadline, and THR have all left it alone while the aggregators and fan sites ran wild with it, loudly, with everything from a Heroes for Hire spinoff to a Defenders reunion getting floated ahead of Marvel Television's New York Comic Con panel on October 8. While Marvel's TV plans stay stuck in rumor, DC just made one official. The Jimmy Olsen project we've been tracking for the better part of a year finally has a title, and it's The People v. Gorilla Grodd, now an eight-episode straight-to-series order at HBO Max. Jimmy Tatro is officially Grodd after months of being merely attached in reports, but the bigger get is how much of the Daily Planet came along, with Skyler Gisondo, Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover, and Wendell Pierce all reprising from Superman for a “true” crime docuseries reinvestigating Grodd's murder conviction. To close out our all-TV episode, here's the one DC show that actually made it to air, and it's doing numbers. Per Deadline, Lanterns pulled 9.3 million global viewers in its first three days across HBO and HBO Max, 6.6 million of them stateside, making it the biggest DC Studios premiere in HBO Max history and a top five series debut on the platform overall. That's a stronger opening than The Penguin and IT: Welcome to Derry, and the premiere has held the number one spot on HBO Max's daily top ten every day since Sunday, with Chris Mundy already sketching season two despite no official renewal yet. Kit Harington will play Gilderoy Lockhart in season 2 of HBO's Harry Potter series. Harington replaces Nicholas Hoult, who was originally cast in the role but left over scheduling issues.Spider-Man: Brand New Day continued its dominant run at the global box office and currently stands at $2.2 billion worldwide. The Odyssey opened in a few more territories and sits at $1.44 billion in its sixth weekend, while newcomer Insidious: Out of the Further opened to $60.3 million worldwide. In an interview at the For the Love of Fantasy & Sci-Fi convention in London, Hayley Atwell told attendees that she was frustrated by Captain Carter's storyline in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness saying “If I'm really like brutally honest, I was so disappointed with how they positioned her and what happened to her in that scene. It's so small, and she gets frisbeed to death. I tried on set to kind of go, ‘Can I just add? Can I just suggest?' And they were like, ‘Sure, but no.'”FX has ordered Legends, a meta-thriller limited series spinoff of Sons of Anarchy that reunites the majority of the original cast, including Charlie Hunnam, only this time playing fictionalized versions of themselves. The logline has the cast reuniting at a fan convention after more than a decade, where the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood faces a real-world threat more dangerous than anything from the show.NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal in an interview with EW revealed that he attempted to get cast in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a role but was told no. He said “I wanted to be in the ‘Avengers' and they were like, ‘Shaq, we fuckin' love you and we'd love to put you in, but if your face pops up on screen people are going to go, ‘Hey, that's Shaq!' He said it truthfully, and I was like, alright… I guess my face is too bigtime.”
The False Claims Act sets a maximum penalty near $28,000 for each false invoice submitted to the government, and those penalties are tripled and stack on every claim, which is how a routine billing dispute becomes a multi-million-dollar case. Nick Peterson, counsel at Wiley Rein and a former FAA special agent, breaks down how whistleblower suits get filed under seal, why data miners now drive nearly half of these cases, and the exact moments a government contractor is most exposed. What you'll learn in this episode: - How the False Claims Act penalty of roughly $28,000 per invoice gets tripled and stacked into a large case - Why a qui tam whistleblower can collect 15 to 30 percent of the government's recovery, and how cases stay sealed for years - The set-aside size standard mistake that turns a contract you already won into a fraud allegation, and when you must disclose - How affiliation rules pull a private-equity owner's other companies into your small-business determination - Why data miners now file close to half of all whistleblower cases, and what DOJ's new invitation to them means for contractors Chapters: 0:00 - False Claims Act breaking news on DOJ and data miners 4:00 - False Claims Act explained, from the Civil War Lincoln Law 6:00 - Qui tam whistleblowers and the 15 to 30 percent reward 7:00 - The $28,000 per-claim penalty and treble damages 17:00 - Procurement fraud, bid rigging, and ghost bids 26:00 - Set-aside size standards and the duty to disclose 31:00 - Cases under seal for years and the real cost to defend 40:00 - DOJ's new national fraud enforcement task forces Mindy gives you the federal opportunities, agency signals, recompete intel, and pursuit briefs that tell you not just what contracts exist, but which ones to chase and how to win them. In 2017, journalist Katie Sanders discovered an episode of a radio program called This Is Your Life. It was a scratchy recording from 1949, and she heard the voice of 2nd Lt. Murray Simon, her grandfather, for the first time. In the episode, Murray was reunited with a man named Peter Ortiz, who had rescued him after his plane crashed over Nazi-occupied France in 1944. Ortiz became one of the most decorated Marine officers of World War II, undertaking missions now handled by units like the Navy SEALs and Green Berets. Katie and Nicholas Reynolds, a former CIA historian, went on to write Ortiz's War. Throughout a summer of unexpected experiences, God showed us that He is good all the time. A Job-like season- that was my summer. I am sharing it because it is a perfect example of how God is good all the time. His character is definitive. He never leaves us or forsakes us. At the end of 2025, I chose the word trust for 2026. This summer, God showed me, through God winks, that trust in him is imperative to live this life. He gave me constant opportunities to build that trust and lean into it. I am finally catching my breath. It has been wild, an absolutely emotional summer. The Summer Began With a Farmhouse Dream And then a health crisis for our son The day after we closed on the farmhouse, we were set to fly to Greece for my daughter's graduation gift. The night before, at 8 p.m., we were at the farmhouse teaching friends how to care for the three sheep we inherited with the house. My husband's phone rang. It was my son's fiancée's father. He said our son was on his way to the hospital by ambulance. That was all he knew. Emergency Surgery Showed God's Hand in the Chaos The waiting game. Confident they are meant for each other. Sudden Grief Met Unmistakable God Winks Almost a month to the day after our son's surgery, my niece called me at 4 a.m. My brother-in-law had chest pain, fell, and had no pulse. For the next hour, I prayed the rosary, and my husband and I lay awake praying. At 5 a.m., we got the call that despite the efforts of medical staff, he did not survive. Still hard to handle - One thing she said over and over is "how do people do this without faith?" A Violin in the Rain: An Unforgettable God Wink Leaving our home of twenty-six years brought a new set of emotions After returning from the funeral in Illinois, it was time to pack up the house and get our daughter ready for college. Due to the unexpected events of the summer, she had to do a lot of her packing herself. Not only packing for college, but also packing up her childhood bedroom. It was an emotional week. Plans Changed The move has always been an underlying source of emotions since we closed on the farmhouse in June. We thought we had planned precisely so that we could move into the carriage house during renovations of the main house. But you know what they say about making plans - man makes plans, and God laughs. Empty Nester And now, the empty nest phase of our lives begins. I was not prepared for how emotional I would be leaving my daughter 14 hours away. No one could have prepared me for going from seeing two of my kids (the third lives and works in the DC metro area) every day to seeing none of them. I miss them fiercely. But I am also thrilled that they have these opportunities to grow and spread their wings, and I trust that God will guide and protect them on their new journeys. Scripture That Carried Us Through the Unexpected Several Bible verses carried me through the summer. The first I would like to share is 2 Timothy 1:7, which says God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but power, love, and self-control. Philippians 3:13-14 reminds me to stop dwelling on the past and press on toward what is ahead. Jeremiah 29:11 says God's plans are for our welfare, not to harm us, but to give us hope and a future. Isaiah 41:10 says not to fear, because God is with us and will strengthen us. God Is Good All the Time — Even When Life Is Hard Read the full show notes.
For more than a decade, the federal government's biggest tool for accelerating clean energy hasn't been a grant or a loan. It's been the tax code. Tax credits have driven the buildout of wind, solar, and now a much wider range of technologies, like storage, nuclear, and advanced manufacturing. But there's a catch: most of the companies earning those credits don't have enough tax liability to actually use them themselves. A clean energy developer can be sitting on tens of millions of dollars in value that's slowly losing worth simply because they can't cash it in. In 2022, the Inflation Reduction Act tried to fix that by making these credits transferable for the first time ever — sellable directly, for cash, to a company that can use them. It created a brand-new, multi-billion-dollar market overnight, with no playbook and no established way for buyers and sellers to even find each other. Our guest today set out to build the infrastructure this new market needed. Alfred Johnson is the Co-Founder and CEO of Crux, an AI-native capital platform for clean energy and manufacturing infrastructure. Crux got its start in transferable tax credits, and has since expanded into tax equity investment and debt origination, leveraging software, data, and AI to cover the full capital stack for energy and manufacturing infrastructure. Alfred grew up around politics in Washington, DC, and spent nearly two decades moving between government, finance, and technology before his wife, Emily, pushed him to build something in clean energy. In our conversation, Alfred walks me through his journey, and what it takes to build the capital markets infrastructure this country needs to power its clean energy future. Today, Crux has raised more than $77 million, grown to more than 120 employees, and facilitated nearly $10 billion in transactions across the clean energy economy. HBO's new DC superhero show Lanterns is not the show you think it is. It's about a couple of space cops: Kyle Chandler plays Earth's Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, a grizzled, impulsive old-timer reluctantly training up his backup, John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). Yet the story avoids cosmic sweep and spectacle in favor of a character-driven mystery and a grounded setting. Alleged leaks suggest GTA 6 could make players actually refuel their cars, because apparently escaping the cops and committing fictional felonies wasn't immersive enough. Now we may get the authentic experience of realizing the tank is on E at the absolute worst possible moment.Would stolen cars come with random amounts of gas? Could you abandon one because the tank is empty? Would GTA Costco memberships get you cheaper fuel? These are the important questions being asked by this comedy podcast while the rest of society presumably does something productive. Then we discover—or rediscover, depending on how damaged everyone's memory is—the 1985 cinematic achievement known as Gymkata. The premise is magnificently stupid: take gymnastics, combine it with karate and create an unstoppable martial art. That's it. That's the movie. Olympic gymnast Kurt Thomas is sent on a dangerous mission where his greatest weapon is himself…and the conveniently placed gymnastics equipment that somehow keeps appearing whenever dozens of bad guys need to be kicked in the face.Moon reveals that Gymkata has been living rent-free in his subconscious since childhood, including scenes that still randomly appear in his dreams. This launches the crew into an extremely important celebration of the ridiculous action and sports movies of the '80s: Rad, No Retreat, No Surrender, Best of the Best, No Holds Barred, Bloodsport and the glorious era when movie executives could apparently greenlight anything as long as somebody knew karate.Naturally, Jean-Claude Van Damme doing the splits leads Lern to ask questions about male anatomy that nobody was emotionally prepared to answer. Suddenly we're discussing whether men have a “seam,” whether God is responsible for said seam, and why absolutely none of this information was included in health class. And then Steven Seagal arrives. The crew finds audio of Seagal telling a story about being in Kazakhstan before stopping to ask, “How do you say in English…” despite being born in Lansing, Michigan. What follows is a forensic investigation into Steven Seagal's increasingly mysterious relationship with the English language, fake accents, international travel and whether spending enough time somewhere can legitimately change how you talk. From there, Crap on Celebrities turns surprisingly philosophical when Dr. Dre and Billy Corgan land on opposite sides of the AI music debate. Dre sees artificial intelligence as another creative tool, while Corgan wants absolutely nothing to do with it. Moon breaks down how producers already use loops, samples and pre-built musical elements, leading to a bigger question: where exactly does using technology stop being a tool and start becoming “cheating”?This comedy podcast also gets into Bret Michaels recovering from kidney stone surgery while apparently refusing to surrender his hat under any circumstances, Kacey Musgraves performing while floating on giant disco-ball truck nuts, Dolly Parton exploring avatar performances, Bonnaroo taking a year off, and St. Louis artist Slater covering Hole's “Violet.”Plus, the CW dumps Miss USA and Miss Teen USA, DC apparently decides Gorilla Grodd needs a true-crime mockumentary, National Treasure 3 inches closer to becoming a real movie, and Lern takes everyone on an unsolicited but surprisingly enjoyable Whitesnake journey. Then we wrap things up with celebrity birthdays—including Dave Chappelle, Cal Ripken Jr., Steve Guttenberg and Vince McMahon—before heading toward relationship fun facts and the mysterious 7-7-7 rule. It's GTA rumors, '80s movie nostalgia, celebrity news, music industry arguments, St. Louis chaos and several conversations that should've ended three sentences earlier. In other words: a comedy podcast.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Today's Headlines: It was quite a weekend! Trump turned DC streets into a 1.7-mile IndyCar speedway for another Freedom 250 event, took a ceremonial lap in the presidential limo with Melania — not Natalie — while his Qatari plane did a flyover. In other shady news, Trump announced he's importing up to 300,000 metric tons of "product for ground beef" without specifying what the product is, where it's from, or how it'll be discounted 25% — which landed one day after a New York Times investigation revealed the Bureau of Land Management has been selling wild horses to buyers who ship them to slaughter plants through a legal loophole, with sales more than doubling in 2025. On the tariff beat, The trade war with Canada is officially back on with 50% tariffs on $20 billion in goods, Canadian PM Mark Carney promising to match them dollar for dollar starting September 8th, and Carney publicly stating that Trump is demanding Canada change its French language and Quebec culture as conditions for reversing tariffs. We finally have a nominee to lead the FDA, Trump nominated Dr. Heidi Overton and she has an MD and a PhD, which is more than expected. She has also called for conservatives to "infiltrate" public health institutions though, which is less reassuring given that 2026 has already seen four times the average number of foodborne illness cases. The Department of Education took the first steps to strip the American Bar Association of its law school accreditation authority, which would prevent graduates of non-accredited schools from sitting the bar exam in most states — a creative way to destabilize the entire legal profession. Back to shady, Jared Kushner quietly met with Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries to discuss working together on housing and cost of living, which suggests the White House privately expects Democrats to win the House majority in November. And finally, a wildfire near Reno has burned over 13,000 acres with zero containment, putting 42,000 people under evacuation orders including two hospitals, with 40 additional fires burning across Nevada simultaneously.
