How does a busy congressman maintain peak physical condition while juggling DC politics and constant travel? In this Fitness Friday episode on the Habits and Hustle podcast, I am joined by Congressman Wesley Hunt as he breaks down his unconventional approach to fitness and nutrition that keeps him razor-sharp. We dive into his extreme intermittent fasting protocol, his massive one-meal-a-day strategy, and why he never schedules breakfast meetings. Hunt also shares his strategic workout split, 10,000-steps-a-day commitment, and how he stays disciplined with his three-days-on, one-day-off lifting routine even during hectic congressional schedules. Wesley Hunt represents Congressional District 38 in Houston, Texas. A West Point graduate and former Apache helicopter pilot, Hunt served eight years in the Army before entering politics. He currently serves on the House Judiciary and Natural Resources committees. What we discuss: 20-hour intermittent fasting and one-meal-a-day protocol Eating 33-ounce steaks and whole chickens in single sittings 10,000 steps daily through strategic treadmill and walking Three-day workout split: legs, chest/triceps, back/biceps Why he avoids breakfast meetings and alcohol Thank you to our sponsor: Momentous: Shop this link and use code Jen for 20% off Therasage: Head over to therasage.com and use code Be Bold for 15% off TruNiagen: Head over to truniagen.com and use code HUSTLE20 to get $20 off any purchase over $100. On today's episode, I talk to Eisner Award-winning comics writer Kelly Sue DeConnick. Born in Columbus, OH, Kelly Sue moved around a lot as a child and eventually got into comics professionally through adapting translations of manga. Since the mid-aughts, she has jumped between creator-owned work for publishers like Image such as Pretty Deadly and Bitch Planet, and work-for-hire at Marvel and DC, including a defining run on Captain Marvel. Most recently, she created FML for Dark Horse. It returns this July, and is easily one of the best comics in the last year! According to reports, Kansas has extended the STAR bonds that could be used by the Royals and Chiefs for new facilities. Because of the way it was originally written, they could not extend it for a short time so they had to extend it for a full year. What an embarrassment. A columnist pens a perfect piece on why Sportsradio has declined in popularity in America, I'm sure you know I have some thoughts on this. White boy Cooper Flagg, from Duke, is the top pick in the NBA Draft. Will the NBA treat this superstar like they treat Caitlyn Clark in the WNBA? He's playing in Dallas, no less. These leagues have a choice to make. Stick with all their traditional liberal hate and bias or embrace new faces for their league that make them uncomfortable. Legendary coach Steve Spurrier was asked about Texas qb Arch Manning as the favorite for the Heisman this year and responded asking if he's so great, why didn't Texas do with Manning what K-State has done with Avery Johnson, who is 6 months younger. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. US bureau chief Jacob Magid joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. US President Donald Trump on Thursday demanded the end of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ongoing criminal trial. Netanyahu is on trial in three corruption cases, facing charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. Among other comments, Trump wrote, “It was the United States of America that saved Israel, and now it is going to be the United States of America that saves Bibi Netanyahu. THIS TRAVESTY OF ‘JUSTICE’ CAN NOT BE ALLOWED!” Magid weighs in. Yesterday, it was announced that US and Iranian officials will hold nuclear talks next week, even as Tehran insisted it will not give up its nuclear program and the US has claimed the program was "obliterated." Magid breaks down some of the conflicting information and offers insight into what kind of deal may take shape following the Israel-Iran war. Israel reportedly halted aid deliveries into Gaza after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced that he ordered the military to present a plan within the next two days on how to keep Hamas from stealing humanitarian assistance. Magid tries to makes sense of what is reportedly taking place on the ground. Families of hostages held in Gaza hope the ceasefire with Iran, which went into effect on Tuesday will mark a turning point — one that could lead to a truce with Hamas and finally bring their loved ones home. “Those who are capable of reaching a ceasefire with Iran can also put an end to the war in Gaza,” the Hostages and Missing Families Forum said in a statement. “Ending the operation in Iran without using it to return all the hostages would be a grave diplomatic failure.” Magid has some optimism for more talks and explains why. Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates. As Amy Poeppel publishes her fifth novel, she reflects on lessons learned and discusses the challenges she faced while writing a novel simultaneously set in Berlin and Dallas. Amy Poeppel grew up in Dallas, Texas. She graduated from Wellesley College and worked as an actress in the Boston area, appearing in a corporate industrial for Polaroid, a commercial for Brooks Pharmacy, and a truly terrible episode of America's Most Wanted, along with other TV spots and several plays. While in Boston, she also got her M.A. in Teaching from Simmons College. She is married to David Poeppel, a neuroscientist at NYU and a Max Planck director in Frankfurt. For the past thirty years, they have lived in many cities, including San Francisco, Berlin, and New York, and had three sons along the way. Amy taught high school English in the Washington, DC suburbs, and after moving to New York, she worked as an assistant director of admissions at an independent school where she had the fulfilling experience of meeting and getting to know hundreds of applicant families. She attended sessions at the Actors Studio and wrote the theatrical version of Small Admissions, which was performed there as a staged reading in 2011. Amy's writing has also appeared in The New York Times, The Rumpus, LitHub, Working Mother, Points In Case, and The Belladonna. Tommy and Ben grapple with the fallout from Trump and Netanyahu's war with Iran. They talk about how America's massive bunker buster bombs didn't solve the problem of Iran's nuclear program, why the strikes were illegal under international law, and how the drumbeat for regime change will never go away. They also discuss the short-term thinking and triumphalism running rampant in DC and the media and Israel's own under-the-radar nuclear program. Additionally, they cover this week's NATO summit and Trump's less-than-reassuring statement on mutual defense for member countries, some rare good news about a prisoner release in Belarus, how companies like Palantir could fast-track us into a surveillance state, and why Jeff Bezos's Venice wedding is going off the rails. Then, Ben speaks with Nilo Tabrizy, a visual forensics reporter at the Washington Post and co-author of the forthcoming book, For the Sun After Long Nights: The Story of Iran's Women-Led Uprising, about how Iranian civilians have experienced the last 12 days. She tells us about how codebreaking began in the US during WWI, why she chose to include a character with mental illness, and what kind of radio drama she would write if given the chance. Patrons will hear if writing is getting easier or harder the more books she writes. The Codebreaker's Daughter by Amy Lynn Green"Readers will thrill in peering behind the curtain of US-based intelligence during the world wars."--ERIKA ROBUCK, bestselling authorIn the heart of the US capital, Dinah Kendall's role for the Office of Strategic Services isn't the thrilling espionage career she dreamed of. Instead, she spends her days crafting rumors aimed at undermining Axis morale. As Dinah navigates her duties, she uncovers a startling revelation: Her mother, Lillian, was once a codebreaker, cracking military ciphers during the Great War alongside some of the nation's most brilliant minds. The deeper Dinah dives into her mother's past, the more secrets come to light--including the heavy cost of high-stakes codebreaking. Lillian, though resolute in her decision to avoid war work, reluctantly enters the fray when old friends in Washington, DC, seek her expertise. Both mother and daughter find themselves working behind the scenes--and working together--to support the Allied cause. But just when Dinah begins to excel in her new position, everything she's worked so hard to obtain comes crashing down around her. Caught in a web of intrigue and unsure who to trust, she must piece together the truth in time to confront the shadowy threat that could compromise the impending D-Day invasion.A compelling World War I and World War II home front novel inspired by true stories of codebreakers and OSS agents. Courage, danger, and a mother-daughter bond interweave in this compelling historical tale that will appeal to readers of Sarah Sundin and Madeline Martin.Get your copy of The Codebreaker's Daughter by Amy Lynn Green.Amy Lynn Green is a lifelong lover of books, history, and library cards. The history of the Brazilian gymnastics program, from its humble beginnings in the 1970s to Olympic glory in 2024 This week's episode is a commission from our Olympic Fantasy Gymnastics winner, Liam, who wants us to discuss the history of Brazilian gymnastics. From trailblazers like Daiane dos Santos and Daniele Hypolito who put Brazilian gymnastics on the map, to the current stars, Flavia Saraiva and Rebeca Andrade. GymCastic LIVE in CHICAGO: Tickets on sale now Get Tickets Setting the Scene How the Brazilian teams of recent years embody the energy of badass, confident adult women who do gymnastics as a team sport Why we think Marta Karolyi would probably hate the 2024 Brazilian Olympic team (in the most complimentary way possible) The early days of Brazilian Gymnastics When did Brazil send its first team to Worlds? Why we need a Brazilian gymnastics shrine dedicated to Claudia Costa How did the program start gaining momentum during the 1980s? The tumultuous 1990s: from finishing dead last at 1991 Worlds, to defeating the United States at the 1997 Pan Am Championships, what was going on in these years? The Pioneers of Career Longevity Nearly every Brazilian gymnast who has ever won a World or Olympic medal has continued with the sport past age 25. What does this tell us about the program's emphasis on career longevity? What do Jade Barbosa and Oksana Chusovitina have in common? Hint: it's more than just being a great vaulter The First Stars of Brazilian Gymnastics Daniele Hypolito wins Brazil's first-ever World medal at 2001 Worlds and finishes fourth all-around How the success of 2003 Worlds put Brazil on the gymnastics map thanks to greats like Daiane dos Santos and Lais Souza Innovative skills throughout the years from Dos Santos's piked double-arabian to Oliveira's double-arabian pike half-out The Birth of a Powerhouse Brazil starts bringing foreign coaches in: Oleg Ostapenko, Iryna Illyashenko, how did this contribute to Brazil's rise? Jade Barbosa's incredible senior debut at 2007 Worlds, winning Brazil's first-ever all-around medal In 2008, the powerhouse team of Jade Barbosa, Ana Cláudia Silva, Ethiene Franco, Laís Souza, Daniele Hypólito, and Daiane dos Santos helped Brazil qualify to the Olympic team finals for the first time EVERRR Controversies and DRAAMMAA Did you know Daiane dos Santos had a 5-month ban in 2009-2010 for diuretic usage following a surgery? Jade Barbosa was taken out of the London Olympics because of a *checks notes* apparel sponsorship conundrum? Gymnastics sabotage??!! Building depth Remember the cautionary tales of the Romanian and Australian programs: don't be too reliant upon veterans to come and save the day; you need to invest in the next generation! Emerging alongside Joseph McCarthy's Red Scare in the 1950s was the Lavender Scare: Widespread panic and paranoia over the inclusion of gay personnel in the federal government. Their perceived dangers led to the terminations and forced resignations of thousands. Fast forward to 1988 – Tracey Ballard, who worked at the CIA, headed in to take a polygraph exam. Not sure what would happen next, she did something no one else ever had – She told her polygrapher, ‘I'm a lesbian.' Trace became the first openly gay CIA employee, and spent the next decade of her career fighting for inclusion, acceptance, and kindness within the agency. Her story highlights the critical importance of diversity, and the beauty in recognizing the things that make us different as well as the shared values that bring us all together. How do you bridge the gap between fast-moving renewables and slow-moving utilities? Brian Nelson has spent the last two decades doing exactly that—from building house-sized transformers to now leading ABB's renewables segment. At ACP 2025, he sat down with Nico to pull back the curtain on how utilities think, why they're cautious, and what it really takes to bring innovation to the grid.In this episode, you'll hear why Brian believes in the future of smart substations, 2,000-volt switches, and solid-state breakers—all designed to meet utilities where they are while pushing the envelope of what's possible.Expect to learn:
The year is 1968. Summertime. Washington, DC. And covering the National Mall are endless rows of shacks built by hundreds of poor families from across the United States. It's called Resurrection City, and they have come to Washington to demand an end to poverty and a new economic bill of rights… for the poor. This was Martin Luther King Jr's dream. The Poor People's Campaign is what he'd been working for in the months before he was killed in April 1968. The city would last for six weeks. It would inspire thousands. Its legacy would last for decades. This is episode 51 of Stories of Resistance—a podcast co-produced by The Real News and Global Exchange.
