Bereits 1913 wird der Stundent aus Prag von seinem Spiegelbild verfolgt und mit dem doppelten Lottchen schuf Kästner einen Grundplot, der seit über 70 Jahren Stoff für filmsche Umsetzungen liefert. Ob Komödie, Science-Fiction oder Horror, das Thema ist in vielen Genres zu Hause und weiß die geneigten Zuschauer immer wieder zu begeistern. Ein guter Grund also, dass sich Tim und Janno etwas eingehender mit der Sache beschäftigen. Erich Kästner schrieb auch Zeitungsartikel, Romane für Erwachsene, Drehbücher und Gedichte – seine „Lyrische Hausapotheke“ ist einer der meistverkauften Lyrikbände in Deutschland. Klar, flott, lustig – so klang Kästner, dabei schwang bei dem Friedensaktivisten immer auch Schwermut mit. Am 23. Februar ist Kästners 125. Geburtstag, im Juli sein 50. Todestag. Wer war der Mann hinter den Kinderbuchklassikern? Und was macht sein Werk bis heute so erfolgreich? „Emil und die Detektive“, „Das doppelte Lottchen“, „Das fliegende Klassenzimmer“ – kein Wunder, dass viele Erich Kästner für einen Kinderbuchautoren halten. Dass er viel mehr als das war, erklärt Kästner-Biograf Sven Hanuschek in SWR2.

Vor 125 Jahren, am 23.02.1899 kam der deutsche Schriftsteller Erich Kästner in Dresen zur Welt. Berühmt wurde er vor allem wegen seiner Kinderbücher wie «Emil und die Detektive», «Das doppelte Lottchen» oder «Das fliegende Klassenzimmer». Doch Erich Kästner war weit mehr als nur ein Kinderbuchautor. Erich Kästner schrieb auch für Erwachsene, verfasste Gedichte und Romane. Er hatte einen feinen Humor und hob immer mal wieder den Zeigefinger. Als Hitler 1933 an die Macht kam, musste der Schriftsteller mit ansehen, wie seine Bücher verbrannt wurden. Trotzdem blieb Erich Kästner in Deutschland. Wir beleuchten diese Zeit und auch unbekanntere Seiten von Erich Kästner sowie seine psychischen Probleme und Alkoholkrankheit im letzten Drittel seines Lebens bis zu seinem Tod 1974 in München.

Mit seinem großen Erfolg "Emil und die Detektive" von 1929 wird Erich Kästner zum beliebtesten Kinderbuchautor der Deutschen. Der Schriftsteller nimmt Kinder ernst – das gilt für seine literarischen Figuren wie den Emil, das Lottchen oder Pünktchen und Anton. Es gilt aber auch für seine jungen Leserinnen und Leser, die Erich Kästner zu verschiedenen Gelegenheiten immer wieder trifft. Hier plaudert er am 29. September 1954 mit Kindern in einer Berliner Buchhandlung über seine Arbeit. Der Westberliner Rundfunk ist damals mit einer Reporterin dabei.

Ganz vielleicht ist dies eine Folge, die ein bisschen was vom doppelten Lottchen hat. Denn Caro Zahn (Gründerin von She Does Business) und Gretel sehen sich nicht nur ähnlich, kommen beide aus Mecklenburg Vorpommern und lieben es, selbständige Frauen dabei zu begleiten, so richtig erfolgreich zu werden. Nö, sie teilen auch ziemlich viele Ansichten und eins ihrer Mottos, auch wenn die Eine es auf Deutsch nutzt - „Ich KANN das. Ich WILL das. Ich MACH das.“ - und die Andere auf Englisch -„I CAN. I WILL. END OF STORY“. Was es mit Caros Karriere als Detektivin auf sich hatte, kann Gretel zwar nicht herausfinden, aber die beiden Nordlichter schnacken darüber:

John Snow was one of the first physicians to study and calculate dosages for the use of ether and chloroform as surgical anaesthetics, allowing patients to undergo surgical and obstetric procedures without the distress and pain they would otherwise experience. He designed the apparatus to safely administer ether to the patients and also designed a mask to administer chloroform. He personally administered chloroform to Queen Victoria when she gave birth to the last two of her nine children, Leopold in 1853 and Beatrice in 1857 and was still not yet knighted, leading to wider public acceptance of obstetric anaesthesia. John Snow studied chloroform as much as he studied ether, which was introduced in 1847 by James Young Simpson, a Scottish obstetrician. He realised that chloroform was much more potent and required more attention and precision when administering it. Snow first realised this with Hannah Greener, a 15-year-old patient who died on 28 January 1848 after a surgical procedure that required the cutting of her toenail. She was administered chloroform by covering her face with a cloth dipped in the substance. However, she quickly lost pulse and died. After investigating her death and a couple of deaths that followed, he realized that chloroform had to be administered carefully and published his findings in a letter to The Lancet. Snow was a skeptic of the then-dominant miasma theory that stated that diseases such as cholera and bubonic plague were caused by pollution or a noxious form of "bad air". The germ theory of disease had not yet been developed, so Snow did not understand the mechanism by which the disease was transmitted. His observation of the evidence led him to discount the theory of foul air. He first published his theory in an 1849 essay, On the Mode of Communication of Cholera, followed by a more detailed treatise in 1855 incorporating the results of his investigation of the role of the water supply in the Soho epidemic of 1854. By talking to local residents (with the help of Reverend Henry Whitehead), he identified the source of the outbreak as the public water pump on Broad Street (now Broadwick Street). Although Snow's chemical and microscope examination of a water sample from the Broad Street pump did not conclusively prove its danger, his studies of the pattern of the disease were convincing enough to persuade the local council to disable the well pump by removing its handle (force rod). Snow later used a dot map to illustrate the cluster of cholera cases around the pump. He also used statistics to illustrate the connection between the quality of the water source and cholera cases. He showed that homes supplied by the Southwark and Vauxhall Waterworks Company, which was taking water from sewage-polluted sections of the Thames, had a cholera rate fourteen times that of those supplied by Lambeth Waterworks Company, which obtained water from the upriver, cleaner Seething Wells. Sturt found the conditions and climate in New South Wales much better than he expected, and he developed a great interest in the country. Sturt received approval from Governor Darling on 4 November 1828 to explore the area of the Macquarie River in western New South Wales. The party faced the ordeal of rowing back upriver on the Murray and Murrumbidgee, against the current, in the heat of an Australian summer. Their supplies ran out and, when they reached the site of Narrandera in April, they were unable to go any further. Sturt sent two men overland in search of supplies and they returned in time to save the party from starvation. But Sturt went blind for some months and never fully recovered his health. By the time they reached Sydney again, they had rowed and sailed nearly 2,900 kilometres of the river system. Sturt believed that it was his destiny to discover a great salt water lake, known as 'the inland sea', in the middle of Australia. At very least, he wanted to be the first explorer to plant his foot in 'the centre' of Australia. In August 1844, he set out with a party of 15 men, 200 sheep, six drays, and a boat to explore north-western New South Wales and to advance into central Australia. They travelled along the Murray and Darling rivers before passing the future site of Broken Hill. They were stranded for months by the extreme summer conditions near the present site of Milparinka. When the rains eventually came, Sturt moved north and established a depot at Fort Grey (today this site is within Sturt National Park). With a small group of men, including explorer John McDouall Stuart as his draughtsman, Sturt pressed on across what is now known as Sturt's Stony Desert and into the Simpson Desert. Unable to go further, he turned back to the depot. Sturt made a second attempt to reach the centre of Australia, but he developed scurvy in the extreme conditions. His health broke down and he was forced to abandon the attempt. John Harris Browne, surgeon on the expedition, assisted Sturt, took over leadership of the party and, after travelling a total of 3,000 miles (4,800 km), brought it back to safety. Von Braun took a very conservative approach to engineering, designing with ample safety factors and redundant structure. This became a point of contention with other engineers, who struggled to keep vehicle weight down so that payload could be maximized. As noted above, his excessive caution likely led to the U.S. losing the race to put a man into space with the Soviets. He published numerous books and articles, including Ulendo: Travels of a Naturalist in and out of Africa, High Jungles and Low, So Excellent a Fishe (about his green turtles), The Windward Road and several Time-Life books such as The Everglades and The Reptiles. He was also the author of the Handbook of Turtles, and with Coleman J. Goin, Guide to the Reptiles, Amphibians and Freshwater Fishes of Florida. While a serious scientific and nature writer, he also had a remarkable sense of humor, which led him to publish the parody of scientific taxonomic keys - his A Subjective Key to the Fishes of Alachua County, Florida, affectionately known as the "Carr Key". Carr was also known for his efforts in conservation, especially for sea turtles, helping convince Costa Rica to establish Tortuguero National Park in 1975. He was a co-founder of the Caribbean Conservation Corporation, which helps to save and monitor sea turtles in Tortuguero,Costa Rica. He was often joined in his conservation work by his wife Marjorie Carr, who was a major advocate for conservation in her own right. In 1952 Carr was awarded the Daniel Giraud Elliot Medal from the National Academy of Sciences. Er hat einmal gefragt, wie man das Durcheinander seiner literarischen Arbeiten zu einem geschmackvollen Strauß binden kann. Es muss auf jeden Fall ein bunter Strauß sein, denn er schrieb für das Kabarett und für das Theater, er war Lyriker und Drehbuchautor, er hat Romane geschrieben und arbeitete als Journalist. Berühmt geworden ist er allerdings als Kinderbuchautor. Von ihm stammen: "Pünktchen und Anton", "Das fliegende Klassenzimmer" und "Das doppelte Lottchen". Heute vor 45 Jahren starb Erich Kästner. Jeden Abend lese ich meinem Sohn etwas vor. Das gehört dazu. Und es freut mich immer wieder, wie viele schöne Geschichten es für Kinder gibt. Einige davon möchte ich Euch heute vorstellen – vielleicht habt Ihr auch Lust, sie zu lesen? Ich habe deutsche Autoren und Geschichten für Euch ausgesucht. Natürlich gibt es ganz neue Literatur für Kinder, aber ich möchte mit den Klassikern beginnen, mit den Büchern und Autoren, mit denen ich selbst aufgewachsen bin und die heute noch sehr beliebt sind. Ein großer deutscher Autor war Otfried Preußler (Amazon-Link). Er schrieb Geschichten wie „Das kleine Gespenst“ oder „Der Räuber Hotzenplotz“. Das sind freche Figuren, die man sofort ins Herz schließt. Auch wichtig ist natürlich Ellis Kaut (Amazon-Link) – sie schuf eine Figur, die jedes deutsche Kind kennt: Den Pumuckl. Der Pumuckl ist ein Kobold, also ein kleines Wesen, das unsichtbar ist und ständig Scherze macht. Dieser Pumuckl bleibt bei einem Schreinermeister am Holzleim kleben – und wird für diesen sichtbar. Die vielen Abenteuer von Pumuckl und dem Meister Eder sind besonders deswegen beliebt, weil der Pumuckl mutig ist, frech und witzig. Es gibt den Pumuckl auch als Fernsehserie aus den 80er-Jahren und als Hörspiel. In meiner Liste darf ich auch Erich Kästner  (Amazon-Link) nicht vergessen. Er schrieb weltbekannte Bücher wie „Das doppelte Lottchen“, „Emil und die Detektive“ oder „Das fliegende Klassenzimmer“. Bücher voller Wortwitz und Klugheit. Fantastische Geschichten – im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes – hat Michael Ende (Amazon-Link) geschrieben. Seine „Unendliche Geschichte“ ist poetisch und fast schon philosophisch zu sehen. Es geht um die Menschen, die keine Bücher mehr lesen und daher ihre Fantasie verlieren. In diesem Buch kommen märchenhafte Figuren vor wie ein Glücksdrache, ein Riese aus Stein und eine uralte Riesen-Schildkröte. Das Beste daran aber: Der Held der Geschichte ist ein kleiner, unscheinbarer Junge, der von den anderen Kindern gehänselt wird. Er rettet die Welt der Fantasie. Kurz gesagt. Aber lest lieber selbst! Michael Ende hat noch eine Figur erschaffen, die die deutschen Kinder lieben: Lukas, den Lokomotivführer. Zusammen mit Jim Knopf, einem kleinen Jungen mit schwarzer Hautfarbe, erlebt er viele Abenteuer auf der ganzen Welt. Und dann sind da noch die Bücher von Janosch. Wie wunderbar! Die bekanntesten Figuren sind der kleine Tiger und der kleine Bär, die sich beispielsweise auf den Weg nach Panama machen nur um am Ende festzustellen, dass es zu Hause doch am schönsten ist. Es gibt aber wie anfangs erwähnt auch moderne Kinderbücher, die sehr beliebt sind. Zum Beispiel die Bücher von Ingo Siegner über den Drachen Kokosnuss. Das ist ein kleiner, mutiger Feuerdrache, der mit seiner Freundin Mathilda, dem Stachelschwein zum Beispiel eine Rakete baut, um zum Mond zu fliegen. Etwas sanfter geht Nele Moost ihre Geschichten vom kleinen Raben Socke (Amazon-Link) an. Der Rabe trägt immer eine rot-geringelte Socke und lernt, dass man nicht lügen soll, dass man mit anderen teilen soll und andere Lektionen. Besonders schön finde ich für kleine Kinder die Bücher über die Kuh Lieselotte (Amazon-Link). Lieselotte ist eine Postkuh und sie erlebt kleine, unspektakuläre Geschichten. Diese sind aber mit so viel Liebe erzählt und vor allem so schön bebildert, dass sie wirklich Spaß machen. Ich könnte noch ewig so weitermachen – unser Bücherschrank ist bis zum Rand voll!
