You can have fun and get to know ppl within certain parametersBecause it is structured/organized and often only done at the beginning, it can feel inauthentic even if you do the hard work of being vulnerableThis exposes the separation in our culture that we often experience at work - we hide many aspects of our “true” selves at work, and so are guarded in circumstances that demand we “truly get to know each other” - does that desire exist elsewhere outside of this meeting where we are doing icebreakers? How?From “Reinventing Organizations” - our soul can be shy, especially when around other people, and if we think about our true selves (soul) as a wild animal hiding to see if it’s safe to come out, you do not go barreling through the woods yelling after it, which is what icebreakers feel like to Dan. “Unfortunately in our culture, we too often go crashing through the woods together as a means to build community quickly...under these conditions, the intellect, emotions, will, and ego may emerge, but not the soul; we scare off all the soulful things, like respectful relationships, goodwill, and hope.” (which are v important components of community)How to Do BetterSimilar to our episode on teambuilding, getting to know one another should be embedded in every culture. Creating a space of safety, collaboration and wholeness is an ongoing, everyday process that is not accomplished with icebreakers. So, how do we center humanity and get to know one another at conferences/new meetings/workshops without icebreakers? What’s the alternative? What you are looking for is Check In/Check Out QuestionsWhat is the result of your meeting?Relationships/Resources/ResultThere is power in questions, be intentional about the questions that you ask and why you choose them. They should serve a specific purpose to the time that you are spending together.Check-In Question ExamplesRelationships:What name do you prefer people call you?How are you feeling today? (feel free to project the feelings inventory)What is one thing that brought you joy today?Resources Check In Questions:What is your learning style? What is one thing, if people knew it, could help them work with you? What do you need to do make this meeting valuable to you? Results:What would it look like if this meeting were successful? If a miracle happened, what would you accomplish here today?Check-Out Question Examples:Relationships:In one word or short phrase, how are you feeling right now? What have you appreciated about our time together?Resources:What knowledge, insight, or wisdom have you gained from our time together today? What will you do differently based on the work here today? What worked? What didn’t work? What would you have done differently? Results:On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate the progress of this meeting towards our meeting result?Rate progress on each meeting result: high, medium, lowWhat is your next step? What is one commitment you can make?Bottom line: keep your questions simple and relevant to whatever you are spending your time together onA note on small groupsIf you break your attendees into small groups, take note on the level of vulnerability expressed in the check-in questions if you can. Do not put your group in a situation to discuss highly vulnerable subjects the first few times that they meet. Today, I have Anne Bona a Narcissistic Abuse Recovery Coach who shares her story of being raised by a malignant narcissistic mother, falling into a narcissistic abusive relationship and how she healed from the trauma. Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental condition in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance. Narcissists have a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, and a lack of empathy for others.  Narcissistic abuse by a parent or partner can destroy ones sense of self and can erode confidence over time.  Narcissistic Personality Disorder symptoms are wide-ranging and can differ between individuals. Those with NPD will show five or more of the following symptoms: Believe that they are better than others. Require constant attention of others. Preoccupied with intelligence, success, power and ideal romance. Believe they are special and that only other special people/institutions will understand them. Believe they should be given preferential treatment. Lack of empathy and disregards feelings of others. Takes advantage of others to reach their own goals. Often envious of others and/or believes others are envious of them. Displays arrogant behaviours and attitudes Narcissistic abuse includes: -Emotional, mental, physical, financial, spiritual, sexual and verbal abuse (belittling, bullying, accusing, blaming, shaming, demanding, ordering, threatening, criticising, sarcasm, raging, opposing, undermining, interrupting, blocking, and name-calling).  -Manipulation -Emotional Blackmail -Gaslighting  -Competition  -Sabotage Tools for growth When you realise that you are engaging with a narcissist, it is important to set boundaries or sometimes go no contact. You have to focus on your healing journey and not that of the narcissist. Narcissistic abuse will cause you to distrust your perceptions of reality so you may need to embark on a journey of discovering who YOU are. Therapy, Therapy,Therapy. Remember that the healing journey is not linear. Resources: What is Narcissistic Personality Disorder? Episode 457 | Adriel Sanchez and Bill Maier answer caller questions. Show Notes CoreChristianity.com Key questions answered in today's show: 1. I've been taking the time to study the Bible, and your show has been very helpful. My question is, in Romans 3:31, Paul asks if faith nullifies the law. He answers, “Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.” Does this mean that when our faith is sincere and we start to have victory over sin or do good works, that our works somehow uphold the law?  2. How should I react to a preacher’s teaching that I do not agree with?  3. In 1 Kings 19:11–13 God spoke to Elijah through a still small voice. A friend of mine recently indicated that she wanted to hear from God more and that she needs to quiet her mind and wait for His still small voice. Is the way God spoke to Elijah for all believers today? How does God communicate to His children today? 4. When Jesus returns, it says the dead will rise first. But relatives say that when someone has died they have gone to be with the Lord. Can you shed light on that?   5. I have not been born again very long. I was living with my boyfriend when Jesus came to me. We immediately ceased fornication as we are not married, but we continue to live together. I am currently on a break from work, and I have a daughter from a previous relationship. As I am not working due to a mental health injury I sustained at work, I can not afford to move out. There is absolutely no fornication or anything of that nature. Am I still saved?  Resources What to Look for When Choosing A Church Request our latest special offers here or call 1-833-THE-CORE (833-843-2673) to request them by phone.

Episode 416 | Dr. Michael Horton and Adriel Sanchez answer caller questions. Show Notes CoreChristianity.com Key questions answered in today's show: 1. Starting at Acts 21:10 Agabus prophesies about Paul's arrest. I've heard it claimed that Agabus got some of the arrest's details wrong. And therefore it's ok if we prophesy and get some details wrong. Was Agabus wrong on some of his details about Paul's arrest? 2. I understand how Jesus takes away the penalty of sin but how does he remove the guilt and shame, especially of my backsliding? 3. I grew up thinking that if I was faithful God would provide me with a good life. Yet, I know of so many Christians who are not blessed, and especially when I think of Christians in poor countries that are faithfully enduring persecution it seems like being faithful to God doesn’t lead to a more blessed life. And as I read the Bible, especially the psalms it seems like even the wicked prosper. Can you explain this? 4. How can I have a close relationship with God? When I was part of a church that ministered to widows, I was amazed at how close some of them seemed to God. They just seemed to have a strong love and sense of his care for them. What do you think makes for a close relationship with God?  5. My question is Jesus says if you ask me anything in my name, I will do it and there are other similar quotes that come from him. But what’s very difficult is even things that seem to be God’s will: asking for people’s salvation, asking for people will severe illnesses to be healed aren’t answered. God does not answer those prayers on many occasions. So I’d love to hear your encouraging thoughts on how Christians can take hold of promises such as these without being discouraged when prayers aren’t answered. Thank you and God bless you. We talk about preconception care a lot but what about after pregnancy? Many women experience a number of different post-partum conditions so should we be planning for that as well? IN THIS EPISODE: I interview my friend and esteemed colleague, Dr. Morgan MacDermott. Dr. Morgan MacDermott is a rising leader in women’s reproductive health dedicated to transforming the struggles of the modern mother. As a licensed Naturopathic Doctor and mother of two young children, she blends medical expertise and gathered communal wisdom to help women in-person and online to navigate wellness throughout this revered metamorphosis. Although she felt very prepared for motherhood the first go-around, she felt gut punched by the universe with her postpartum issues of recurrent mastitis and postpartum anxiety. These experiences helped her immensely - not only in how she would go on to create an entirely different postpartum for her second child, but also with the women she works with as patients in her private practice. Morgan believes that the best way to advance the health of future generations is by revolutionizing the health and well-being of our current mothers, and she is a powerful voice for natural medicine in the fields of preconception, fertility, pregnancy, and postpartum. Do you ever feel as though your marketing messages are lost in a sea of digital overwhelm for your clients and customers? If you aren’t being heard, your message dies. This has significant implications for the health of your business. Learn how to harness the primordial laws of human perception to stand out as Dr. Sabrina interviews Jamie Mustard, author of The Iconist. Jamie teaches the science of what causes anything to stand out in the modern world. Through his work, Jamie has observed the primal laws of BLOCKS™, which explain why anything stands out and endures in the mind or fails to.  In his book, The Iconist: The Art and Science of Standing Out, through pop stories and comprehensive research, he shows how BLOCKS™ solve the problem of us all being made invisible as we compete for less and less available attention in a messaging and media over-saturated world. He teaches how BLOCKS™ allow anyone in any field to stand out at will based on the natural primordial laws of human perception. As host of a popular RadioActive talk show on KXL101.1 FM in Portland, OR, Jamie interviewed hundreds of designers, innovators, artists, and agents for social change who are having an impact all over the world.  An avid consumer of popular culture, Jamie is a graduate of the London School of Economics. He is obsessed with the economics of attention and has consulted for Intel, Cisco, and Symantec. He breaks all this down into why we entrepreneurs need to have a simple way to get our message across in terms of marketing and branding, as well as why this is important for our teams and our overall quality of life as entrepreneurs. Prepare for an eye-opening and fascinating conversation! The Profit by Design Podcast is a Tap the Potential production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group.  Show Highlights: In 1950, a person would be exposed to approximately 250 advertising messages in their day-to-day life. By 1970, the number of advertising messages in a day increased to around 2,000. The last time this was studied was in the late 1990s, and 5,000 - 7,000 advertising messages a day is what a person was exposed to. This was all before the internet hit full stride and before social media. Today, the number of advertising messages we are exposed to on a daily basis is estimated to be 10,000 - 15,000. A person can’t process even 1,000 of these messages, so what this means is that anybody trying to communicate is just one of tens of thousands. Jamie’s book, The Iconist, offers a solution to this very real problem. “Continuous partial attention”, a term coined by Linda Stone, who did some research for Microsoft and Apple, means that we’re being bombarded by so much information that we’re only partially paying attention. As a business owner and entrepreneur, this is a huge thing when you’re trying to get your business noticed. To be iconic is to be the first choice. Anything busy in a world overloaded with content, no matter how good it is, instantly gets discarded. People have to have an idea of who you are and what you’re offering them before they have a chance to think in their lizard-brain. Jamie discusses a chapter in his book called, “Road Signs” and how warning labels work. The book teaches you how to turn some aspect of what you do into something that has the same power as a STOP sign so you get that instant fixation. As long as there’s something behind it that’s genuine and real, people will engage further and remember you. “What is the best thing about myself that intersects with what my customer most cares about?” The answer to that question is what you present in a bold way on your website. Then, they can learn about all of your other strong points that you have to offer. “Drag" is when you’re presenting all of the busy stuff but you haven’t self-identified the best of what you have to offer that your customer is wanting. Some psychological ramifications of too much choice include paralysis, anxiety, dissatisfaction, and depression. These same psychological ramifications happen to apply to feeling like you can’t get noticed because there’s too much content around you. Science and research show that when we present complicated things with big, bold, simple imagery, it changes the way we relate to complicated information. We retain more of the information and appreciate it more. Adults crave this elementary communication even more than children do. A BLOCK™ is the anatomy of what makes something iconic. Dr. Sabrina relates how in Mike Michalowicz’s book, Profit First, the Profit First Equation of Sales - Expenses = Profit is a great example of a BLOCK™ and the way it makes the Profit First concept iconic. BREEED - Blocks Repeated Exhaustively Everywhere Equals Demand. This is the snow-ball effect. Jamie shares his poignant backstory and how he came to be interested in the subject of his book. Finding Lasting Joy Part 5 020

Your Encore Life

Welcome to episode 20 of “Your Encore Life”.  In this episode we are continuing our series on finding joy.  We have discussed the difference between happiness and joy, The Joy Model from the book with the same name with the emphasis on being and doing and the importance of balance between those.  Episode 18 we began talking about the acronym MASTER from the Joy Model, with the importance of having “M”argin in your life.  Episode 19 we talked about “A”bide, or to be with or live with, referring to making God the center of our lives. Today we will be talking about the S in MASTER, which is self-awareness. An article by Tchiki Davis, Ph.D. in Psychology Today, they state Self-awareness involves, thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. It is important, because it’s a major mechanism influencing personal developmentSelf-awareness involves monitoring our stress Self-awareness requires self-examination to become more aware of your strengths and weaknesses regarding your well-being). Be aware, though, that an honest, non-judgmental self-analysis isn’t easy. We tend to berate ourselves for our failings or fantasize about how great we are, when neither is actually the case. We all have a mix of good and bad traits, but we are largely unaware of them. In order to self-reflect objectively, we need to quiet our minds and open our hearts, forgiving ourselves for our imperfections and offering ourselves kudos, but only where we deserve them. Increasing self-awareness of false attitudes or inappropriate behaviors requires peace of mind, time, attention and focus. Knowing ahead of time that we can indeed change in positive ways through deeper self-awareness makes it worth working on those personal qualities we most value. But first we must look within ourselves through self-examination to see what’s there, which is often less obvious than we think. In the book “The Joy Model” that I have been using as a guideline for this series, Jeff Spadafora say self-awareness “is more than just knowing your skills and talents.  It’s about knowing how you relate to God, how you communicate with others, how you think and process information, what things you avoid, what you are passionate about, and other components the are unique to you.  He goes on and talks about the false attitudes as a false self, saying it “is a character, personality, title, position, and identity that we have built up for public display over the years. The energy we put into portraying this False Self to the world is rooted in the emotions of fear, anger, shame, guilt, greed, pride, lust, jealousy, etc.” “People only detach from these emotions and the False Self when they are confident they have a safety net of God’s love to fall into. Why do we create this False Self for a public display?  Why can’t we be comfortable with who we are, who God created us to be.  The realization that God loves us unconditionally and invites us to come as we are to Him gives me a tremendous sense of calm and peace.  I know how often I have used my False Self to be accepted, to make an impression, to try to climb the corporate ladder, to make people like me or impress them. We seek acceptance so much that we often stifle our true selves. If we can rest in the acceptance that the all powerful Creator of the Universe loves us as we were created to be by Him, we can give up the False Self and experience joy as our True Self. The article in Psychology Today I referenced earlier writes of several ways we can build self-awareness.  They include: Walking, especially in the quiet of nature, can be useful in building self-awareness. The mind tends to wander along with our feet, so with a little conscious nudging (and walking), we can examine our part in something that is happening in our lives now — at work, in social situations, in our relationships, or within the family. Practicing mindfulness can increase self-awareness.Mindfulness includes focused attention in the moment to whatever one is doing, and involves practices such as meditation or quieting of the mind. Becoming a good listener can increase self-awareness. “Getting out of ourselves” by focusing on another person is a good antidote to stop downward spirals of self-destructive thinking. Journaling is a good way to become more self-aware. By writing your thoughts or stream-of-consciousness ideas, you begin opening up to those vulnerable places within. It is here that the mother lode of self-awareness dwells. Feedback from others can help you be more self-aware. Since we are our own best audience, we may miss something in our self-appraisal. That’s where the objectivity of others can be most helpful in self-assessment. If you have the courage, ask a friend or acquaintance their opinion of you, or ask about how you managed some project you worked on together or how you handled yourself in some quirky situation. Self-awareness can help you know your strengths and weaknesses.  There are many assessments that can help you become more self-aware.  One of my favorites is the Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment.  I am a certified Strengths Champion Coach and truly believe that this assessment has tremendous value in clarifying your strengths and how to best utilize them and how to manage what may be weaknesses while focusing on your strengths.  There are many others as well, such as the DISC profile and the Enneagram, which has gained popularity of late.  If you would like to discuss any of this with me please reach out.  I will offer my podcast listeners a special on the Clifton Strengths assessment and a 60 minute coaching session to clarify your results. Spadafora warns that “if you are truly honest as you examine yourself, you will start to get some clarity on what to do at both the spiritual (being) and practical (doing) levels, but rarely will you get full clarity.  The temptation for many is to stay in the introspection mode of building self-awareness for too long.”  He refers to this as “perpetual naval gazing”. Bob Buford in his book “Halftime”, suggests doing what he refers to as “low cost probes” that move you from introspection to action.  Things such as volunteering to serve meals at a homeless shelter if your heart aches for the homeless, or at a pregnancy center that promotes life if abortion breaks your heart as it does the heart of Jesus.  If kids that don’t have a father figure or are on the foster care system tugs at your heart, be a mentor to a kid through the school system or local foster care program. As you become more in tune with your true self, start dreaming again. The sad truth is that most adults stop dreaming when they reach their mid 20’s. Action Item:  Write down your answer to the following question:  If time, money, and failure weren’t obstacles, what would you do with your life?  That is a powerful question to ponder, but allow yourself to dream again. Join us next week we will be talking about the “T” in the acronym MASTER, which is treasure. We had a lot of fun with this episode -- and we learned a few things about each other in the process of recording it! What's today's podcast episode topic? The Enneagram and marriage. Whether you love all things Enneagram, are skeptical of it, or don't even know what it is, I think you'll enjoy this candid conversation about our differences, how we have worked through them, and what it looks like to love and respect someone who is the complete opposite of you in many ways. Pull up a chair (or a load of laundry!) and listen in as we chat about our big foster care news, grilling meat, my favorite makeup cleaner (and I make a confession that I might get some flack for), a book I'm reading, and marriage and the Enneagram! In This Episode:   [01:55] What's saving our lives? Butcher Box and Mary Kay 3-in-1 Timewise Cleanser. [07:20] I’ve been reading Come Matter Here by Hannah Brencher. [11:28] How do marriage and the Enneagram tie in with one another? [14:37] Jesse talks about what it's like to be married to a very strong Enneagram 8. [18:30] On the flip side, I share what it is like being married an inquisitive Enneagram 5. [25:34] How do we reconcile our differences? [30:19] Learning more about our personality types has helped us to build a stronger marriage through understanding. [33:57] Choose to see differences as strengths and it will change your perspective -- and maybe your relationship! Links and Resources: What is the Enneagram? What kind of returns can a passive multifamily real estate investor expect? What if you could double your money in just five or six years? And pay little or nothing in the way of taxes? Jan Larson spent 25 years in the high-stress world of semiconductor development, most recently working for Amazon. Runner Girls

Runner Girls

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 14, 2018 24:10

This week Sue and Meagan are learning all about hormones and how they affect the body, and we might even talk about running! Full Show Notes and Resources: What are hormones? Cortisol - stress hormone that controls your mood, motivation, and fear (known for your body’s fight or flight response), also affects how your body metabolizes food, keeps inflammation down, regulates blood pressure, and controls your body’s sleep/wake cycles, can also boost energy. Cortisol can shut down bodily functions that aren’t necessary when your body is having a crisis of some kind (like shutting down menstruation when energy supply is chronically low). Having too much cortisol in your body for too long can have serious negative effects on the body like anxiety, depression, memory problems, trouble sleeping, and weight gain. Adrenaline - another stress hormone that is secreted in times of crisis. In response to a threat, adrenaline stimulates the heart to beat faster and harder, increases alertness, increases blood flow to the muscles, and decreases the pain response. Excessively high levels of adrenaline due to stress without actual threat of danger can cause heart damage, insomnia, and a jittery, nervous feeling. Estrogen - Estrogen, or oestrogen, is the primary female sex hormone. It is responsible for the development and regulation of the female reproductive system and secondary sex characteristics. Estrogen also affects metabolism, hunger, and fat storage - which is why changes in estrogen throughout the menstrual cycle can affect your hunger, food intake, and weight gain. Estrogen blunts hunger, so you may feel less hungry at times in your cycle when estrogen is high, like the week before ovulation. It also plays a role in bone formation and muscle protein synthesis. Progesterone - another female sex hormone that is involved with ovulation and pregnancy. It also affects metabolism, skin health, mood, bone strength, body temperature, inflammation and immune response. Progesterone can have a dramatic effect on mood - when progesterone levels drop before the start of the next menstrual cycle, that is when many women experience sharp changes in mood and heightened irritability (one known characteristic of PMS). Progesterone increases hunger - watch out for hunger when progesterone peaks the week after ovulation. Testosterone - the main male sex hormone that is also present in women. It is an anabolic steroid - which means it promotes muscle growth. Testosterone usually stays pretty low in women, but we do get a small surge in testosterone around the middle of our cycle. Testosterone enhances libido, so that is something else you might notice in the days around ovulation. Growth Hormone - stimulates growth, cell reproduction, and cell regeneration in humans - because of its ability to promote muscle growth and fat loss, it is used exogenously by bodybuilders, but it is a hormone that all humans produce naturally. Growth hormone is secreted in pulses throughout the day - with a big surge of it coming just before you wake up in the morning. Fasting and vigorous exercise both increase growth hormone, while eating food decreases it. Erythropoietin (EPO) - is an essential hormone for red blood cell production and has been shown to dramatically improve athletic cardiovascular performance. EPO doping has been used by endurance athletes to boost performance illegally, but training at altitude can have similar effects on the body because the lower oxygen levels at altitude can boost natural EPO and red blood cell production. Insulin - regulates blood sugar levels in the body. When you eat food, insulin is secreted to promote the storage of glucose in your liver, muscles, and fat. The glucose goes to the liver first and is stored as glycogen, and once that’s filled, goes to the muscles and again stored as glycogen, and any remaining glucose is stored in the fat cells as fat. Carbohydrates, protein, and fat all raise insulin levels in the blood, but to varying degrees - carbohydrates increase insulin the most, and fat increases insulin the least. Glucagon - the fat-burning hormone. When insulin levels are low, glucagon increases and stored energy (in the form of fat and glycogen) is used to fuel the body. Fasting increases glucagon, and eating suppresses it. You can’t burn your fat for fuel if your insulin is always high, which is why people who are insulin-resistant - like those with diabetes - have a hard time losing bodyfat. Ghrelin - called the hunger hormone because of its role in regulation of appetite. When ghrelin is high, appetite increases, as does food intake. Leptin - the satiety hormone, when ghrelin is high, leptin is low and vice-versa. When leptin increases, the desire to eat decreases. People who are leptin-resistant (usually obese people) have difficulty feeling “full” or satisfied after eating, despite high levels of leptin (I think I had some degree of leptin-resistance) Melatonin - a hormone that regulates sleep and wakefulness. Melatonin is involved in the synchronization of the circadian rhythms including sleep-wake timing, blood pressure regulation, and seasonal reproduction. Known as "the hormone of darkness", the onset of melatonin at dusk promotes activity in nocturnal (night-active) animals and sleep in diurnal ones including humans. This is why it’s recommended to sleep in a darkened room (the absence of light helps to promote release of melatonin). During the night, melatonin regulates leptin, lowering its levels. Vitamin D - known as a vitamin, but it is a hormone the kidneys produce that controls blood calcium concentration and impacts the immune system. Only a few foods contain vitamin D (such as mushrooms, egg yolk, or fatty fish). The major natural source of the vitamin is synthesis of cholecalciferol in the skin from cholesterol through a chemical reaction that is dependent on sun exposure. Synthesis of vitamin D in nature is dependent on the presence of UV radiation and subsequent activation in liver and in kidney. Vitamin D has a significant role in calcium homeostasis and metabolism. Vitamin D is necessary for bone mineralization, which should be important to any athlete (you can’t perform with a broken bone!) Additionally, VItamin D also has been shown to enhance muscle synthesis.

Download Our latest 'In the Meanwhile" podcast is inspired by a very real answer to prayer for a dear family member and also to the circumstances behind the new "meanwhile" that Page and I find ourself in right now. These circumstances in our lives remind us that it is God who provides our manna for us daily just like He daily provided for the children of Israel. They also remind us to depend on Him as our ultimate Provider. Deuteronomy 8:16 encourages us, He fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers had not known, in order to humble and test you, so that in the end He might cause you to prosper. Our times of need have a purpose! We hope you'll listen in as we share a very special "manna moment" we experienced quite a while ago but is still impacting us today and also why those manna moments are worth much more than we can imagine. We also hope you'll share a special manna moment from your life -- whether God provided a physical need or a spiritual need. You can share right here at the top of our Facebook Group page.   SHOW NOTES In our podcast, we enjoy sharing three major reasons for "manna moments" -- those times when we are especially dependent on God alone and He abundantly provides. These are: Our faith needs testing and God meets this need. We must learn that God is our greatest need. Manna moments are a milestone for the person going through the struggle, but also for future generations. RESOURCES What was it like to eat actual manna? GotQuestions.org sheds some light. Read Exodus 16, the entire account of how God provided the original manna to His children in the wilderness.  Share (and read) "manna moments" from fellow listeners and be ENCOURAGED!

Bio Dr. Kadija Ferryman (@KadijaFerryman) is a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Data and Society Research Institute in New York. Dr. Ferryman is a cultural anthropologist whose research examines how cultural and moral values are embedded in digital health information, social and biological influences on health, and the ethics of translational and digital health research. She earned a BA in Anthropology from Yale University and a PhD in Anthropology from The New School for Social Research. Before completing her PhD, she was a policy researcher at the Urban Institute where she studied how housing and neighborhoods impact well-being, specifically the effects of public housing redevelopment on children, families, and older adults. She has published research in journals such as Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, European Journal of Human Genetics, and Genetics in Medicine. Ryan Browne at CNBC reports on the dangers of Facebook’s “log in with Facebook” feature, which apparently exposes users’ data to third-party trackers. Morgan Chalfant at the New York Times reported on a painting app that actually installs malware that harvests users’ payment information, among other things. Additionally, Ali Breland reports in the Hill that the Department of Housing and Urban Development has reopened an investigation it had closed last year into whether and how Facebook helps facilitate housing discrimination. Democrats are pushing for tighter data protection rules at the Federal Trade Commission, but that’s unlikely to mean much in the near-term since, with Commissioner Terrell McSweeny’s announcement last week that she’ll be stepping down at the end of this month, the FTC will now be operating with just one of five commissioners—Republican Acting Chair Maureen Ohlhausen. Auditors don’t seem to be offering much in the way of confidence in the manner with which Facebook protects user data. PricewaterhouseCoopers conducted an audit of Facebook and told the FTC, after Facebook knew about Cambridge Analytica, that Facebook was adequately protecting consumer privacy and in compliance with a 2011 consent decree. Meanwhile, David Ingram reports for Reuters that Facebook has changed its terms of service for 1.5 billion Facebook users in Africa, Asia, Australia and Latin America. Like Europe, their terms of service were governed by Facebook’s headquarters in Ireland. But since Ireland would come under GDPR, Facebook has changed the terms of service in those areas to fall under the more lenient U.S. privacy standards. Facebook says it will apply the same privacy standards around the world. Clyburn to step down from FCC Democratic FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn has announced that she will be stepping down from the dais at the end of the month. The Obama appointee served at the Commission for eight years and was a rare and passionate advocate for marginalized communities. President Trump will need to nominate a replacement Commissioner who would then need to be confirmed by the Senate. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is reportedly set to recommend current FCC Assistant Enforcement Bureau Chief Geoffrey Starks, who enjoys broad support from Democrats. U.S. investigates AT&T/Verizon collusion Cecilia Kang reports for the New York Times that the DOJ has launched an antitrust investigation into possible coordinated efforts between AT&T and Verizon and the G.S.M.A.— the standards-setting group, to make it more difficult for consumers to switch carriers.  The Justice Department is looking into whether the organizations intentionally attempted to stifle the development of eSIM which allows consumers to switch provides without a new SIM card. FCC to hold 5G spectrum auctions in November The Federal Communications Commission voted unanimously last week on a public notice that it will commence spectrum auctions for 5G in the 28- and 24- GHz bands. The auctions will commence on November 14th, beginning with the 28 GHz band. CNN report: YouTube ran ads for hundreds of brands on extremist YouTube channels A CNN report found that ads from over 300 companies appeared on YouTube channels promoting extremist groups like Neo-Nazis, conspiracy theorists and other extremist content. Adidas, Cisco, Hershey, Hilton and Under Armour were among the many companies whose ads appeared on these sites. Paul Murphy reports in CNN. Lyft to invest to offset carbon emissions Finally, Heather Somerville at Reuters reported that Lyft is launching a program to offset emissions from their 1.4 million drivers. The company will invest in things like renewable energy and reforestation to make up for its emissions, and the amount it invests will grow with the company.

Today Kim and I share how a decade of failures led us to our passion business, how you can find your passion, and how you can turn that into a business (if you want to).   When people decide to start a new venture, they often ask themselves, “What does the world need?” We definitely did this for years, chasing bed bug and hemorrhoid relief businesses because they had a lot of google searches – but we had no passion for it.   Instead, ask yourself, “What makes me come alive?” What makes you passionate? What makes you focus on impacting the world? THAT is actually what the world needs.   Finding Your Passion   We did two things to narrow in on our passion and business, and these simple exercises can help you too:   Make a list of things you love to do; things that you naturally do and that light you up. Ask your honest friends – people who will give you true feedback – about what you are good at, or what gift you bring into their life.   Our friends told Rob that he was inquisitive, and he does love to ask questions, and that he inspires (and pushes) them to Play Hard when they get stuck in the world of Work Hard. We took that feedback and, ultimately, created the Work Hard Play Hard podcast!   Turning It Into a Business   Start by taking a self-assessment – Something like StrengthsFinder, a test that will identify your top five strengths.   When starting a business, trying to build up your weaknesses is a waste of time. Instead, leverage your strengths and hire people to compensate for your weaknesses.   After you know what your strengths are, start formulating that idea. If you want to be a vegan chef, start flooding social media with authentic content highlighting your strengths, and then see what resonates with people. Do they love your recipes? Your videos? Your photography?   At the intersection of your passion, your strength, and audience interest is the kernel of a business you love.   Resources: What are you passionate about? Is your agency stuck in a "best practices" rut? Are you following so-called industry best practices without seeing results? If you’re in a place where excitement and momentum have puttered out and you think your agency has plateaued, you’ve hit what my guest calls your “crapping point” :) It's time to start asking the right questions and creating your own best practices. In this episode we’ll cover: Understanding your context and its three components. How to create your own formula for best practices. How to not fall into the best practices trap. Today’s guest is Jay Acunzo, is Sorry for Marketing and shares it all as a keynote speaker, blogger and host of the podcast, Unthinkable. Jay has an impressive background in the tech world and with start-ups, including a career at Google and Hubspot. He also did investing in start-ups for a firm, so his experience and insight comes from both sides of the aisle. Jay understands the importance of asking a lot of questions, the right questions, and turning away from conventional thinking. Today he is in a fight with best practices because “it has never been easier to be average.” If you aren’t seeing the results you expected and your agency has “Crapped Out,” Jay is here to give us some tips on how to better find your best practices by asking the right questions so you can stand out, rather than blend in. Understanding Your Agency’s Context Your context consists of three things: Those doing the work - yourself, your agency, your team Those receiving the work - your audience, the customer or client Your resources - the means to make things a reality If you find yourself asking “Why isn’t this working?” don’t forget to start adding the word “us” to the equation…. Such as: “Why isn’t this working… for us?” The best practices that might work for one company, may not for yours because your context is different. “Success leaves clues.” ~ Tony Robbins Success might leave clues, but it doesn’t leave answers. Best practices are simply a possibility that still need to be put through the filter, that is your context and then add your details to, and find, a best practice that will work for you. It is time to start thinking for yourself and not just following a list. You are the expert of your agency’s context. How To Create Your Own Formula for Best Practices One word: INTUITION We aren’t talking about the gut feeling you get from emotion and running with it. We are talking about the defined word, Intuition, which has roots in Latin that mean: Knowledge from within In other words, this circles back to knowing your stuff -- knowing your context The best way to know your context is to make sure you are asking the right questions for the three things that make up your context, listed above, Yourself, Your Audience and Your Resources. Visualize your intuition as a thing or tool that is on par with a list article. Understand that Intuition is that compounding return you experience from, constantly asking questions and understanding your context, and making the right call. Trust your INTUITION. How To Avoid the Best Practices Trap It all starts with a shift from the desire of knowing the answer, to caring more about how to find answers. This mindshift begins with asking the right questions of your context points. Each component has two questions and we can look at it like a funnel... The TOP Level is where all the confusion and all the excessive information is found. Sublevel 1 - YOU What is my aspirational anchor? Meaning, your intent for the future and hunger for today. What is my unfair advantage? Do an audit on your team to determine strengths and figure out how to best utilize them. Sublevel 2 - YOUR AUDIENCE What is my first principle insight? Understanding your clients needs/wants and knowing what you can bring to the table to help them achieve those. Who are my true believers? These are the people (even if just a few) who are passionate about what you're doing. Find your super fans. Sublevel 3 - RESOURCES What are my constraints? Is it money, size, time? Understanding these constraints will help you innovate within them. How can I expand? Think big, but understand that you have to start small. Putting a lot of boxes on a field will still cover the field and can build something big The BOTTOM Point is where you find your CLARITY. Be the exception. By identifying and acknowledging your specific context you are in a category of ONE! Related: Creating content that speaks to an audience of one.

What should we be doing until Jesus comes back? Here are a few options. Devote every waking hour to prayer and Bible study. Sell all our property and go sit on a mountaintop to wait for His return. Sacrifice all the pleasures of life - relationships, things, knowledge - to prove our worth to God. What should we do until Jesus returns? Jesus tells us to watch, work, and wait. Key Takeaway Stay busy until Jesus returns. Jesus has told us to watch, work, and wait. Watch & Pray Mark 13:33-37 Jesus uses the word "watch" four times. The first time, verse 33, He says, "watch and pray." Jesus uses this expression in Matthew 26:41. In this verse, He teaches that watching and praying will overcome temptation. Watching is being aware of what is going on around you. But watching is not enough. You must also pray. Satan, the world, and your own desires can cause you to fall away. These things can destroy your witness.  Now, in these last days, we cannot afford to lose our witness. We cannot fall asleep on the job. Work & Look Matthew 24:45-51 In this passage, Jesus teaches that until He returns we are to work and look. The faithful and wise servants are believers. The evil servants are unbelievers. Jesus will find believers working for Him and unbelievers not working for Him. Ephesians 2:10 teaches that we were "created in Christ for good works." What are these good works? Could they be prayer, Bible study, or going to church? Mr. Mark D. Roberts, at the Theology of Work website, says, "The good works encompass the whole of the Christian, all that we do by God's grace for God's purposes." If you are a bricklayer, doctor, or lawyer, the good works you do are bricklaying, doctoring, and lawyering if you do these things for God. Mr. Roberts in his post pointed the reader to Colossians 3:17. This reads, "And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him." Until Jesus returns we are to be working and looking for Him. It should be our hope that God when He returns, finds us serving Him. Final Thoughts Some of you think that you must work your way to heaven, that you must earn God's salvation. That is a wrong understanding. God does not save you based on your good deeds. Rather, God's salvation is a free gift of grace. Read Ephesians 2:8-9. You are saved by grace. It is a free gift from God. There are no conditions. All you need to do is accept this gift by faith. Believe that Jesus died and rose again for your sin. If you have not done this, then God wants you to trust in Him right now. Do not delay. Take the salvation that God offers through His Son. The Rapture Could Happen Today - Episode 12

Faith in the Valley

In today's lesson, we look at the difference between the second coming and the rapture.   The second coming of Jesus is preceded by signs. These signs are so certain that when they happen, you can easily predict the return of Jesus. The rapture is not that way. There are no signs. The rapture will come and catch people by surprise. Your Takeaway You need to live life expectantly. Live in continual readiness, continual watchfulness - Live your life expecting Jesus to return today. The 2nd Coming Matthew 24:32-35 When the fig tree blooms summer is just around the corner.  Jesus is teaching that the signs for His second coming are certain. Once you see the Antichrist enter the Temple you will know that there are exactly three and one-half years until Jesus returns. In Matthew 24:34 the word "generation" is referring to the Nation of Israel not to the generation alive when Jesus spoke the words.  An example of this use of "generation" can be found in Matthew 23:33-36. It was the Nation of Israel that rejected the prophets. This rejection spanned the entire history of the Jews, not just the ones alive when Jesus spoke. See verse 36. Jesus closes this section stating His words are more secure and more lasting than the creation. The Rapture Matthew 24:36-44 Many great Bible teachers do not consider Matthew 24:36-44 as being rapture passage. But I do. Jesus is showing the contrast between His second coming and the rapture. This contrast can be seen in His use of "But" to start off verse 36.  In a sense, Jesus is saying that the 2nd coming can be predicted but the rapture cannot be so. No one knows when the rapture will happen. There are no signs. People will be going about their lives - eating, drinking, getting married - and all of a sudden the rapture will occur.  In Matthew 24:42-44 Jesus gives the key thought. Live life expecting Him to return. Always be waiting for Jesus. Closing Thoughts Many people are afraid of the rapture. It scares them.  If you are a believer, you should not fear the rapture. If you are an unbeliever, I can understand why you may be afraid. Don't fear the rapture; rather fear missing the rapture. How can you know for certain that when the rapture happens you will be with Jesus?  That's easy. Put your faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus, God the Son, died for your sins. He took on Himself the wrath of God so that all who believe would not receive God's wrath. If you believe on Jesus, then you are saved from God's wrath. Salvation has nothing to do with you trying to be good. Salvation has everything to do with Jesus dying for you and you believing on Him. Believe on Jesus and you will be taken to be with Him when the rapture happens. One moment you will be in your tired, sick body, and the next moment you will be in your eternal body, standing before Jesus. Believe today, because the rapture could happen any minute. Your Takeaway Make sure you are numbered among the elect, make sure you are a believer in Christ. The 2nd Coming Jesus return will be like lightening - sudden, visible, and awe-inspiring. Matthew 24:27 Judgment will be sudden and severe. Matthew 24:28 When the tribulation ends the earth will be swallowed up in total darkness. The sun, the moon, and the stars will be darkened. Matthew 24:29 Then the glory of God will appear so that the entire earth will witness it.  Matthew 24:30 And all those that rejected Jesus will mourn. They will realize that judgment has arrived. Matthew 24:30; Revelation 1:7 Family Reunion Jesus will send His angels throughout the world and throughout heaven to gather all the saints. Matthew 24:31; Mark 13:27 Will you be at this reunion? The Rejection of Jesus - Episode 5

Faith in the Valley

A time coming when all of this will end.  Some think it will be because of global warming. Others point to nuclear war.  Or maybe an asteroid strike.  But the real reason is God. God is going to put an end to all of this.  How do I know? Because God told us in His Bible. The important thing is not that the end is coming, nor even how it will all end. More importantly, have you accepted or rejected the person and work of Jesus Christ. I am a reluctant end-times preacher.  I know that many people love messages on the end-times. I also know that some of the great preachers expound on this subject. I’m not one of them. But here we are about to begin a study on Matthew 24 and 25, on what is called the Olivet Discourse.  Why, if I am reluctant, am I preaching on this topic?  Because Jesus said these words and I think it is important to study the words of Christ. And every day we get another day closer to the end. Let’s look at Matthew 24:1. In verse one we read that Jesus departed from the Temple and that the disciples pointed out to Him the temple buildings.  This seems insignificant.  So what if He left the Temple.  The point of this verse is that Jesus walked out of the Temple and He is not going back until He comes again.  How do I know this? Look at Matthew 23:39. So Jesus is saying that He is leaving the Temple and will not return until they welcome Him back.  What led to this departure? That is our subject today as we study the Rejection of Jesus Christ. Turn back to Matthew chapter 21. Go to verse 12. Matthew 21:12. Jesus has entered Jerusalem on the back of a colt, surrounded by people praising Him and waving Palms. This is the event from which we get Palm Sunday. He then goes to the Temple and drives out the money changers. Movies on the life of Jesus always include this scene. It usually portrays a wild-eyed Jesus, sometimes with a whip, flipping tables, and opening animal cages. The gospel of Mark records the same scene. But Mark adds something that I want to include. Put your finger in Matthew and flip over to Mark 11:15. Look at verse 16, Jesus stops people who were carrying, the NIV translates as “merchandise” the KJV says “vessels.” I’ve heard it taught that people, going about their business would cut across the Temple, using the Temple as a shortcut, to get from one side of town to another. But Ray Stedman, in his book What on Earth is Happening? gives a different point of view. He writes, "The word 'vessel' refers to a utensil of worship. Mark is telling us that Jesus not only shut down the commerce of the temple but He also shut down the religious rituals of the temple." (Stedman 22) I’m going to turn back to Matthew 21 and make this point. The Temple and its worship practices were offensive to God. Why? The Temple had become a place of merchandise instead of a place to worship God. And its worship, that too was hollow, empty. Why? Because they rejected the one they should be worshiping. Look at Matthew 21:14-15.The Temple leaders reject Christ not necessarily because He purged the Temple but because the people worshiped Him. The people were doing what those who ran the Temple did not do, they focused their worship on Jesus Christ, the Messiah – The Son of David. Let me pause and ask you to tell me about the place you worship. Where is its focus?  Does your place of worship declare Jesus Christ to be God? If not, then you are rejecting Jesus like these Temple leaders.  The people selling doves and the money changers were actually providing a valuable service to the Temple. The people needed these doves to participate in the worship and they needed Temple currency in order to give an offering. The service these people provided was not wrong. Rather it had overtaken the Temple. The buying and was the priority. Tell me about where you worship. Maybe your place of worship is about music, or caring for the poor, or educating children. These are good causes. But when these things become the focus, when a church is all about its music or its services, then the church is no longer about Jesus. Thus the church is no different than the Temple in Matthew 21.  And then you are rejecting God the Son. Now let’s turn to Matthew 21:33, to what is often called the Parable of the Tenants. The parable of the tenants is a story about a landowner who plants a vineyard then rents that vineyard to some farmers. These farmers are to work the vineyard while the owner is away. Now when the harvest comes the owner sends his servants to collect and the tenant farmers “beat one of the servants, kill another one, and stone the third.  Take a moment and read Matthew 21:37-45. My takeaway is this. The tenant farmers are the Chief Priests and the religious leaders of the day. The owner is God the Father. The son is Jesus.  The story tells me that the tenant farmers knew who the son was. They knew full and well who the son was yet they still killed him because they wanted to hold on to what they had. Likewise, the priests and the Pharisees knew who Jesus was, but still they wanted to put an end to Him. They wanted to kill Him so they could hold on to what they possessed. Some of you reading this know who Jesus is - God the Son - and you know what Jesus did – died on the cross for your sin – yet you still reject Him. Why do you not put your faith in Jesus? Why do you not make Jesus Lord of your life? Because you would rather hold on to the life you have. You know that Jesus is God and you understand that He died for your sins, yet you still reject Him. In the parable, the owner of the vineyard brought these wicked tenants to judgment. Don’t let this life, which you are trying to hold on to, cause you to be judged by God. Trust in Jesus. Admit that you are a sinner. Believe that Jesus, God the Son, died for your sin. Call upon God to save you. Do not continue to reject what you know is true. Believe on Jesus Christ. So and the end of Matthew 23:37-39 Jesus says his peace and walks out of the Temple. He will not return to the Temple until He comes again.  And every day the time for His return gets another day closer. Are you attending a place of worship that does not acknowledge Jesus as God – that focuses on things other than Jesus? You can try and change it, but you may have to leave and find a church that is Jesus-focused. Because until that happens you are in a place that rejects Jesus. And are you sitting here now, aware of who Jesus is and what He did for you, yet still you reject Him. Today is the day of salvation my friend. Stop what you are doing and ask Jesus to save you. Business plans are very important for all types of businesses, large and small.   Business plans for businesses are just like maps for tourists.  It helps you determine where you’re going to go and to be able to measure along the way whether you’re on target.   Some of the key things contained in developing a business planning strategy is to determine where you want to be in one year, two years, five years and 10 years.  It also helps to give some consideration as to what your exit strategy might be.   Accountants and business advisers can assist you to prepare business plans.  In fact, I recommend that you have a conversation with your accountant or business adviser, to help you in the business planning process.   Where do you start?   My recommendation is you start with a Think Tank Meeting with your key team members or whole team if you like, along with your key advisers.  Appoint someone to be the facilitator, in many cases, this should be your accountant or business adviser, to guide you through the business planning process.  That person should then prepare the overall business plan for the business.   Some of the key areas you will be looking to discuss in the business planning process include:   Business Performance Review of your current business performance.  How is the business performing in all of its aspects?   Resources What are the resources of the business?  Do you need new resources?   Products and Services What products/services are you producing?  Are they all profitable?  Are they all contributing?  Do you need to make some changes?  Are they still fashionable?  Are they meeting the market’s requirements?  Are your customers happy?   Profit Analysis This is the time to do some profit analysis on various products and services and other products that you might be looking to introduce.   Market What’s happening in the market in which your business operates?   Customers Are you getting feedback from your customers on changes that they would like to see introduced?  Are you meeting their expectations?   Location Is the location of your business OK?  Will it still be OK in another five years’ time?   Competition What are your competitors doing?  There’s no law against copying competitors, as long as you’re not copying copyright material or patents, however you can learn a lot by observing what your competitors are doing.   System Have you developed systems to improve the reporting of the performance within the business?  This might mean dividing the business into a number of different operations (eg transport department, retail store, the office).  Within workshops, a job costing system will assist in determining profit or loss for individual jobs.  This will help management by being able to view actual results for each component of the business, rather than putting everything in one of those horrible Statement of Financial Performance Accounts that have all your businesses just thrown into one.  Does that really help you run your business?  I don’t think so.   Work in Progress/Stock Control If you’re in a business that’s producing work on an individual work in progress or job basis, have you introduced a computerised work in progress/stock control system?  The benefit of this is that you will then receive a report on the individual performance of each job, not lumped together in one overall account.   I’m working with a client at present that’s been lumping everything into one Statement of Financial Performance Account for a turnover of around $5M - $6M.  We’re now dissecting it into individual job costing results.  I believe they will be able to better manage their business.   Suppliers Do you need to talk to your suppliers to improve your arrangements with them, by discussing some of your strategies with them?  Give them some advanced notice that you might like some particular support.  This might be a personality that comes to your area that your supplier arranged for a visit.   Team Is your team adequately trained?  Are they motivated?  Do you have regular toolbox meetings or team meetings so they can understand what’s happening within the business?   Marketing Is your marketing plan appropriate for 2016/17?  Does the business have a social media strategy?  It’s difficult to envisage that anyone these days can run a business without having a social media strategy and, for this matter, a website.   Sales Who does the selling in your organisation?  Is there close cooperation and communication between the marketing person, the sales person, the product developer or are they all just going off and doing their own individual thing?  It’s very important that it’s coordinated.   Organisational Structure Is the organisation structure suitable for your business?   Risks Have you looked at the risks that confront your business operation?  Some of the key risks are insurance and the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR).  There’s at least another 50 significant risk areas that most businesses in Australia have.  Businesses need to develop strategies for them.   Implementation Once you’ve developed the business plan, it’s very important that, as part of the process, action plans are prepared for every item and allocations are given as to who is going to be responsible for implementing the strategies.  Then, on a monthly basis, a Board of Directors, Board of Advice or management meeting review what’s happening on the actual implementation.   You could have a formal retreat meeting every six months.  Go away somewhere, separate from the office, with no day-to-day phone calls happening.  Review where the business is going.   Find an Accountant/Adviser You might ask: “Where are these accountants that can undertake this type of work because our accountant is only interested in preparing income tax returns?”   ESS Small Business has a directory of accountants who are interested in supplying a wider range of services, commonly known as “business advisory services”, to small/medium enterprises.  This directory is called “Find an Accountant/Adviser”.   Visit www.esssmallbusiness.com.au and click on “Find an Accountant/Adviser” menu tab.  All you need to do is to type in your postcode and the system will then show you accountants/advisers in or near your postcode who offer a wider range of commercial services to small/medium enterprises.   ESS Small Business contains other free articles and articles for sale, prepared by approximately 20 other businesses, on a wide range of small/medium enterprise matters.   ESS Small Business also presents webinars, free of charge, covering a wide range of small business matters.  These webinars are also recorded and are available for viewing.   We will be presenting a webinar on Tuesday 14th June 2016 at 3pm AEST, featuring “Business Planning”.  Click here to register to attend, free of charge.   Whilst you are on the ESS Small Business’ website, why not have a look at the offerings from a wide range of business people who are able to assist small/medium enterprises?
