Instead of taking that attitude, create a positive mindset. Deliberately decide to like them until they give you a reason to think otherwise. Be obsessively dependable. Don’t take your word lightly. If you say you are going to do something, make sure that you get it done. Don’t forget about in-person networking. You never know how a person can completely change your world, so make sure that you get out there and meet people to expand your network. Make sure to get enough sleep. Sleep is crucial to improving behavior, focus, and mood. If you’ve ever had a teenager you know firsthand how lack of sleep affects the way you act. Not every interaction is pass/fail. Break the mindset of worrying whether people like you or not. No one is liked by all. Just be yourself and be a good person. Make sure to always think of the big picture. Don’t just think one day at a time. Always consider your overall goal and how your communication is helping you to achieve that goal. I asked Doug how he balanced those long hours in the early days with Pelotonia and his family life. He told me that since he loves what he does, it’s hard to consider it “work,” which can absolutely blur the lines between home and work-life even further. During some of the more stressful times, there were days where he’d come home from working 10, 12, 14 hour days and just lay down on the floor and let his kids crawl all over him which helped him to de-stress. He also mentioned that it’s essential to emphasize to his children why it’s important to do work that matters and he shared a story with me about how his daughter knew 2 years ago that he was doing very important work. People want to share experiences and feel like they belong to a community. Our job as social entrepreneurs and community-builders is to provide a platform for people to do something important to them. So how can we give people the chance to do something special that they might not otherwise get the chance to do? How can we bring people together and align them with a common goal, especially in a world that is becoming increasingly fragmented and divided? Listen in to this episode to find out! Thinking beyond transactions Historically, companies that wanted to participate in a cause thought that they had to do it a certain way, and most times it ended up being transactional. They would host a fundraising event or ask the employees to donate, and that’s not bad, but it doesn’t build a lasting culture of engagement. What Doug encourages people to do is think about what assets beyond financial that they have within their business that can be powerful and leveraged — maybe that’s human capital, maybe it’s knowledge and resources, maybe it’s a product. Whatever those assets are, it’s about building an integrated approach to engagement. After all, engaged employees are better employees. I firmly believe in the power of taking ownership over your life. Episode Notes Douglas Levin was a professional drummer living in Chicago for about 10 years before he started to sell on Amazon in his spare time. He started this in 2014 and from that point he went on to wholesale, private label, and was able to have all of these scenarios where he got enough money coming in that eventually he was able to bring his wife into the business. What does it take, to be an astronaut? Especially since NASA is currently accepting applications from candidates who would ultimately like to explore the Moon and Mars? (Deadline: March 31, and here's the link for applications.) NASA Astronaut and retired U.S. Army Colonel Douglas H. Wheelock can certainly offer some guidance in that department. "Space has lots of surprises for us," he says. In 2016, we had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Doug, as he prefers to be called, during NASA International Space Apps Challenge, in Pasadena. Doug has flown twice aboard the International Space Station. In total, he has spent more than 178 days in space, according to NASA's biography page. And at the time we talked, he was training the new class of astronauts who had come into the program in 2013, and was looking forward to training another new class that would begin in 2017. Doug's own experience included more than 178 days in space. In 2007, he served as a flight mission specialist on STS-120, the space shuttle's 23rd mission to the International Space Station. And in 2010. he returned to the ISS as a flight engineer for Expedition 24, and commander of Expedition 25. Each time, he encountered an unforeseen issue. The first time, a solar panel malfunctioned, necessitating emergency repairs by the crew. And the second time was much more dramatic. The spacecraft went into "survival" mode, shutting down half the ISS' external-cooling system. Doug and his team were able to innovate against the clock--and their repair of the Space Station's technology, won numerous innovation awards in the process. Doug Pereyda started his career as a Silicon Valley engineer, transitioning from aerospace (Lockheed) to major Internet companies (PayPal, Netflix) as the region redefined itself through rapid change and growth. Doug received his real estate brokerage license in 2003 after his role as Executive Vice President, Chief Technology & Information Officer at LoanCity, Inc. ($7B in annual production) and began investing in single and multi-family real estate, mainly in the Southeast portion of the USA. He currently owns a 73-unit apartment complex in Warner Robins, GA, and has invested in many other multifamily projects while finishing up his Silicon Valley executive career, which spans over three decades. Four days later, two astronauts from this fifth manned Apollo flight would walk on the lunar surface. At the time, future International Space Station astronaut Douglas Wheelock was in grade school. On that Wednesday in 1969, astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Mike Collins put on their space suits just under four hours prior to launch, according to NASA's Apollo 11 press kit. The same (typewritten!) material explains that crew members had two different types of space suits: one for inside the vehicle and one "extravehicular pressure garment". And their heart rate and breathing data would show up on the flight surgeon's console at Mission Control in real time. Thirty years and four months--to the day--of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin's Apoll0 11 moonwalk, the International Space Station launched. Since then, space innovation has far surpassed the imagination of anyone watching Neil Armstrong descending the ladder onto the moon. But that "giant leap for mankind" is at the root of every one of them. Among them: the addition of "citizen science" to NASA's missions. This is a worldwide free event, in which teams from every imaginable discipline join together to "hack" literally any problem in the universe, using NASA data. Onsite at NASA Space Apps Challenge Pasadena in 2016, we had the pleasure of talking with U.S. Army Colonel Douglas Wheelock. Doug, as he prefers to be called, has flown twice aboard the International Space Station. And each time, he's encountered an unforeseen issue. He and his crew had to do some serious troubleshooting. In the process, they won a number of awards for their innovation and ingenuity. We talked about his experiences, as well as his role in training astronauts for space flight, and offered an inside look at "the art and science of spacewalking" and what life is like while in space. As an artist and a creative, one of the most valuable skills you can learn is how to engage people with storytelling. Stories are the way we process information and make sense of the world around us. I’m excited today to bring you this conversation with a friend who helps us learn from the greatest storyteller of all time: Jesus. Today I’m thrilled to be talking with Doug Phillips, who is the Professor of New Testament and Greek Studies, and the Chair of the Biblical Education Division at St. Louis Christian College, where I am also a Professor. Doug has multiple advanced degrees and is also working on a PhD in New Testament from Asbury Theological Seminary. On this episode, we’re going to do a deep dive into the topic of storytelling in the Bible. Doug shares his journey to becoming a professor and helps us understand why Jesus’ parables were so powerful. You’ll learn what makes an effective story, the key components of Jesus’ parables, and how to start applying those lessons to your own communication. Episode Highlights In this episode, you’ll discover: How Doug became a Christian college professor. Why Doug had to learn 5 languages for his Ph.D program. What draws particular people to Old Testament or New Testament studies. What a parable is, and why Jesus used them. Why Jesus’ stories have a shock value (and why your stories should have it also). It doesn’t work to just say, “Here’s what you should think, believe, or do.” A much better approach is to lead people in a way where they come to a conclusion on their own. Help people process the information you want them to know. As the saying goes, “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink.” Good storytelling can help us lead people instead of pushing them. 3. Study the Bible to improve your communication. It’s easy to separate your spiritual life from your business or creative work. But you can learn a lot by studying the communication techniques and the literary genres of the Bible. Today’s audiences have a short attention span. Whether you’re a writer, speaker, podcaster, pastor, or other type of communicator, there is a lot you can learn from Jesus’ short, punchy style of storytelling. In addition, a large percentage of the Bible is some form of narrative—40% of the Old Testament, and much of the New Testament (the Gospels, Acts, and most of Revelation.) So, there are a lot of stories that not only teach us on a spiritual and historical level, they also help us to become better storytellers if we are willing to pay attention and learn from this ancient book that is living and active in our lives today. Think back to your high school days. How would your life have been different if Mindfulness was offered as a course? It’s mind-boggling, isn’t it? Believe it or not, there are numerous schools across the country that are seeing the need for this training and offering it as part of the curriculum. Today’s show is about one man who is making mindfulness an integral part of the curriculum at his school, and he’s working to bring it about in other schools across the US. Doug Worthen is the Director of Mindfulness and Head Boys Lacrosse Coach at Middlesex School, an independent high school in Concord, Massachusetts. He is the first person to hold the title of Director of Mindfulness at a major independent school in the US. He also has an epic life story that he’s never before revealed so fully in an interview. Once upon a time, Doug was on a very different path. He went from being a national champion lacrosse player at the University of Virginia to sailing around the Caribbean for two years with a friend to working in the family business---all of this before a Stage 4 Lymphoma stopped him in his tracks and awakened him to a mindfulness practice. Relying on this practice is what got him through a very long and difficult recovery and an eventual relapse. That experience set him on a new path to following a dream to teach mindfulness practice at his alma mater and look for ways to help other schools expose their communities to the power of contemplative learning and practice. Doug and I met five years ago when I worked in Contemplative Studies at Brown, and we connected over a shared excitement about combining mindfulness practice and sports. Since then we’ve worked multi-week retreats together on leadership and a few week-long retreats on meditation. He shares his story because he genuinely believes that it can serve people. ‘I don’t know where I’m going, but I know I’m going to get there with enthusiasm!’ The path to success is almost never a straight line. Today on Unconventional Genius, I am joined by Doug Wead, and Author, Presidential Historian and former presidential advisor to talk about making a comeback. Doug impacted my life in a huge way, even though prior to this conversation we had never met. About 15 years ago, a friend of mine gave me a CD of a speech called “Great Comebacks” at a real low point in my life. Though I didn’t know it at the time, Doug Wead was the one who wrote and delivered the speech that helped me get my life back together. On this episode, I talk with Doug Wead about his life and the success he has experienced in politics and writing. Doug shares the events that had the greatest impact on him and how his experiences led him to where he is now. After our conversation, I included the “Great Comebacks” speeches in its entirety. Thereafter, he found himself working to help Ronald Reagan run for President. Doug says that Ronald Reagan was an incredible speaker because he worked at it. I asked Doug what has allowed him to experience such great success. He shares about how he discovered his strengths through knowing his weaknesses. Doug says, ”Your greatest strengths are your greatest weaknesses. And your greatest weaknesses can become your greatest strength.” If you learn how to harness your weaknesses and focus them in the right direction, you can turn them into a strength.
