This week, people always tell us we look like Han Solo as we're closing out P.T.August with one of Anderson's many five-star masterpieces, this time a classic rise-and-fall Hollywood story set in California's other film industry. It's 1997's Boogie Nights, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, and starring Mark Wahlberg, Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore, John C. Reilly, Heather Graham, Don Cheadle, Philip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy, Thomas Jane, Luis Guzmán, Ricky Jay, Philip Baker Hall, Nina Hartley, Robert Downey Sr., and Alfred Molina. Despite a pervasive undercurrent of darkness and dread, this is an often very funny comedy about the magic of The Movies and the pursuit of a dream, loaded with richly written characters and delightful performances. As our August canon consideration, it made for an enormously easy KA-CHUNK as a movie we both greatly enjoy. And to put a button on our month-long celebration, both hosts weigh in with a full PTA Power Ranking. Plus: Justin's back from the IMAX with a theatrical field report on Alien: Romulus! If you'd like to watch the film before listening to our discussion, Boogie Nights is currently streaming in Canada on Crave and Starz at the time of publication. Other works referenced on this episode include Edge of Tomorrow, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Don't Breathe, Alien, Aliens, Prometheus, The Mole, Derailed, Saw, Domino, Evil, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Lost, This Is 40, Twisters, Summer of Sam, 54, Normal People, and the entire P.T.A. catalog. We'll be back next week to kick off SepTIMEber with 2002's The Time Machine, starring Guy Pearce and Jeremy Irons, and directed by H.G. Wells' grandson! It is... not streaming anywhere, and not even rentable north of the border, so good luck with that one. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!

We also talk about The Fall Guy and Furiosa tanking at the box office, Richard Linklater's first film ‘SLACKER' and his particular brand of ‘hangout movie', we create a new game called ‘We've (Definitely) Seen This Movie', and Steven starts a rap feud! —————————————————————— To see images of the stuff discussed, look at your device's screen while listening! Roger takes us behind the scenes at a Hollywood poker game where he meets and strikes up a long lasting friendship with filmmaker and actor Robert Downey Sr. You may be more familiar with his son, Robert Downey Jr, star of "Iron Man" and soon to be seen in "Oppenheimer." But Robert Downey Sr. is best known for writing and directing "Putney Swope" - a satire of the New York advertising world, as well as other underground films of the 1960s. Roger remembers when Robert Downey Jr. held a party for his father's 75th birthday and Roger sat next to another director he admires - Paul Thomas Anderson. It's another fascinating look at Hollywood's movers and shakers. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Paul Thomas Anderson's evolution from a brash, self-anointed “Indiewood” auteur to one of his generation's most distinctive voices has been one of the most remarkable career trajectories in recent film history. From early efforts to emulate his cinematic heroes to his increasingly singular late films, Anderson has created a body of work that balances the familiar and the strange, history and myth: viewers feel perpetually off balance, unsure of whether to expect a pitch-black joke or a moment of piercing emotional resonance. The Cinema of Paul Thomas Anderson: American Apocrypha (Columbia UP, 2023) provides the most complete account of Anderson's career to date, encompassing his varied side projects and unproduced material; his personal and professional relationships with directors such as Jonathan Demme, Robert Altman, and Robert Downey Sr.; and his work as a director of music videos for Fiona Apple, Joanna Newsom, and Haim. Ethan Warren explores Anderson's recurring thematic preoccupations―the fraught dynamics of gender and religious faith, biological and found families, and his native San Fernando Valley―as well as his screenwriting methods and his relationship to his influences. Warren argues that Anderson's films conjure up an alternate American history that exaggerates and elides verifiable facts in search of a heightened truth marked by a deeper level of emotional hyperrealism. This book is at once an unconventional primer on Anderson's films and a provocative reframing of what makes his work so essential. Ethan Warren is a member of the Boston Society of Film Critics. He holds an MFA in creative writing from the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, and is the writer and director of the film West of Her. Daniel Moran earned his B.A. and M.A. in English from Rutgers University and his Ph.D. in History from Drew University. In the wake of Robert Downey Jr.'s beautiful film about his dad, Sr., Chris and Jason thought it was time to look at some of Robert Downey Sr.'s movies, especially his two most famous films, Greaser's Palace and Putney Swope. Chris and Jason disagree on both films, which we think makes a great listen. A LARB Radio double header on two mavericks of independent cinema. In the first half of the show, Kate Wolf and Eric Newman are joined by Joyce Chopra to discuss her new memoir, Lady Director: Adventures in Hollywood, Television, and Beyond. The book traces Chopra's earliest inspirations as a young girl growing up near Coney Island to the projects that launched her storied career across TV news, documentaries and feature films, including the feminist classics Joyce at 34 and Smooth Talk. The memoir also engages larger questions about how women combatted sexism in the entertainment industry before the #MeToo movement and in its wake. Chopra's story offers a path for women in film and beyond to find creative achievement, and that moving target we call happiness. Next, Kate Wolf speaks with Chris Smith about his most recent movie, Sr. It documents the career of the American underground filmmaker Robert Downey Sr., who's best known for his 1969 farce Putney Swope, about an advertising agency in New York City. Downey made over a dozen other films, such as Greaser's Palace, Chafed Elbows, and Hugo Pool, which stars his son, the actor Robert Downey Jr., who made his debut in another film of his father's, Pound, when he was only five years old. In Sr. Smith follows Robert Downey Jr.'s experience of reckoning with his father's wildly creative and unconventional life, his complicated parenting, and his painful decline as he struggles with Parkinsons, all while celebrating the work of a true iconoclast.

The new documentary "Sr." is a tribute to countercultural underground director Robert Downey Sr, produced by and featuring his movie star son. It is available to stream on Netflix today. Director Chris Smith joins us.
We welcomed director Chris Smith and producers Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, and Kevin Ford to present and discuss "Sr.", a Spotlight selection of this year's festival, with NYFF Artistic Director, Dennis Lim. Rarely do films about artists allow the kind of poignant intimacy seen in this tender yet fittingly irreverent portrait of the life and career of Robert Downey Sr., the fearless, visionary American director who set the standard for counterculture comedy in the sixties and seventies. An inspired collaboration between celebrated documentarian Chris Smith (American Movie); the subject's son, Robert Downey Jr.; and the man himself, who's occasionally shown working on his own version of the movie we're watching, “Sr.” functions both as an elegy for the rule-flouting underground icon, who passed away at age 85 in July 2021, and as a testament to his tireless creative spirit. Capturing its subjects' refreshing candor about aging, past struggles with addiction, and the ups and downs of working in Hollywood, Smith's film is an emotional depiction of a father-son bond that remained strong, pragmatic, and deeply loving to the end. A Netflix release. All NYFF60 Documentaries are presented by HBO.

It's Hollywood's biggest night! This week we recorded our episode right before the Oscars, and so this episode includes our (mostly wrong) Oscar predictions. But of course, the episode must include the usual business.... and this time we are watching Robert Downey Sr.'s wild satire Putney Swope, and we compare it to the J Lo rom-com from 2022 about a pop star that marries a regular guy! What a duo of films! For most of Leonard Lee Buschel's life, he smoked his breakfast, drank his lunch, and snorted his dinner. He spent 25 years in his chosen profession as a drug dealer, including some hair-raising hijinks, adventure, and near-disaster across international and state lines. In his 50s, he finally hit rock bottom and got sober. Now, he is a leader in the recovery field, cofounding with Robert Downey Sr. the REEL Recovery Film Festival. Tune in and hear not only Leonard's whale of a tale chronicled in his new book, 'HIGH, Confessions of a Cannabis Addict' but also just how alive he feels now that he's no longer HIGH!
Leonard Lee Buschel marvels that he survived the first 44 years of his life… He still can't believe that he didn't get knocked off by drug dealers, thieves or the copious amounts of drugs he himself ingested. Or locked up for life in a U.S. or international prison. And then again, there were the near-death asthma attacks, open-heart surgery and the brain tumor… Yes, it's a whale of tale—all true—that he writes in his acclaimed autobiography HIGH: Confessions of a Cannabis Addict. Buschel lived to tell about it with vast humor, thrilling storytelling, and great insight. He is an Addiction Expert and California Certified Substance Abuse Counselor. He is editor/publisher of the respected weekly news source Addiction/Recovery eBulletin, director of the 13-year-old REEL Recovery Film Festival and Symposium. and co-founder of Writers in Treatment, which supports creatives who struggle with addiction and self-destructive behaviors. But to get to that eminence, he first had to survive his profligate youth and his 25-year chosen profession as a drug dealer. Buschel's life started skidding off the rails just weeks after his birth, when his postal-worker father died of a massive heart attack on his way home from work, throwing what began as the idyllic family life of a middle-class Philadelphia Jewish family into a skid. Raised by his mother – herself a very quirky character — alongside his older brother, Leonard learned most of his life lessons at the corner candy store under the guidance of the local bookie and the a group of cigar-smoking, streetwise philosophers who thought nothing of buying hot merchandise out of the trunk of a car. Gradually, experimentation with pot and sex unleashed a nearly life-long addiction to both -- and what better way to support a cannabis habit than get into the business? Hijinks, adventure and near-disaster across international and state lines ensued, alongside explorations of the spiritual, metaphysical and psychedelic, oftentimes populated by personal encounters with the likes of poet Allen Ginsburg, Ram Dass, Jiddu Krishnamurti; a series of Woodstock headliners; and Hollywood luminaries including John Cassavetes, Gena Rowlands, Stacy Keach and others. And close friendships with Robert Downey Sr., in particular, and Robert Downey Jr. -- who were often there to lend support in challenging times. He spent much of his drug selling proceeds to see the leading jazz artists, rock music superstars and Broadway shows of the era—always living HIGH!. But finally, in his 50s, in the midst of an emotional breakdown over a shattered relationship, and after “smoking his breakfast, drinking his lunch and snorting his dinner” for many years, Buschel checked himself into the Betty Ford Center. It was hitting the lowest of the lows that so many addicts experience. It was time to see what a month would be like without vodka, weed or ecstasy. For Buschel, it was a revelation! Every moment he was struck by how alive he felt when not under the influence. For him, the power of the program there and at AA, worked wonders. He has now been clean and sober for more than two decades. And while he tinkered with several careers to replace his successful, but illegal profession, he finally found himself drawn to helping other addicts kick the habit and find a stable, healthy, robust sober life. Inspired by the work, he launched the eBulletin, film festival and organization Writers in Treatment, which he cofounded with Robert Downey Sr, that have made him a leader in the recovery field. HIGH is a fascinating read, a lively romp through a very vivid life, but it also a cautionary tale and one that inspires. If someone as committed to the drug life like Leonard Buschel can find a sobriety beyond 25-years of active addiction and drug dealing, than there is hope for those who are inspired by his message that there is a better life awaiting—and that they can do it, too. Here is his book. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1737926601/
This week on On Story we're taking a look back at the 1972 cult classic, Greaser's Palace with Legendary filmmakers Paul Thomas Anderson & Jonathan Demme. In 1972, following a succession of truly unruly underground films, including 1968's Putney Swope, Robert Downey Sr. gave the world a new take on the holy story of Jesus Christ in the form of the acid-western Greaser's Palace. Featuring a brilliant mix of offbeat character actors and willing amateurs, Downey weaves a New Testament allegory against the backdrop of an absurdist Western parody. Paul Thomas Anderson, director of 2021's Licorice Pizza and the Silence of the Lambs joined director Jonathan Demme to pay tribute to Robert Downey Sr. 's cult classic after a retrospective screening at the Austin Film Festival. For our final Hot Date of 2021, we chose Putney Swope, written and directed by Robert Downey Sr. As an indictment of corporate greed, the advertising business and race, the film was Downey's reaction to working for years in a production company whose main client was a powerful ad agency. There were no takers for the movie from the major studios so Downey turned to independent producer and distributor Don Rugoff, who placed the film in his art houses across the country and turned it into a major underground hit. Dan and Vicky discuss the film, along with lots of recently seen including Sex and the City follow up And Just Like That, NBC's Annie Live, Disney's Encanto, House of Gucci, Being the Ricardos, 1992's Glengarry Glen Ross, 1974's Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Spielberg's West Side Story, and a bunch of Hammer horror. Ring in the New Year with Hot Date 141: Putney Swope and leave us some feedback or a star rating. hotdatepod.com
Today's guest, Ahbra Schiff, joins us from Studio City, California to talk about a couple of upcoming events that shine a light on addiction and mental illness recovery. She also gives us the backstory on how she got involved with these events, starting with making the acquaintance of Leonard Bushel at a 12-step meeting!Almost 6 years after first meeting him, Ahbra has been working alongside Leonard to put on the REEL Recovery Film Festival (Now in its 13th year) and the Experience, Strength & Hope Awards' Gratitude Dinner. Both of these events are dedicated to increasing awareness of and reducing the stigma associated with alcoholism, addiction and mental illness. As far as Ahbra is concerned, she is a sober woman with 3 grown children and she is grateful and proud to work alongside American and International filmmakers who make honest films about addiction, alcoholism, behavioral disorders, treatment and recovery. Podcaster and author Ed Daly (The Baller Lifestyle) joins Collin & Kerry for a discussion on the new HBO Max comedy, "8-Bit Christmas." How does the film compare to "A Christmas Story?" What video games were we obsessed with during this time? What does an obscure Robert Downey Sr. movie have to do with any of this? All this and more, plus a look at Daly's book "The Christmas Book: The Ultimate Guide To Your Favorite Holiday," available now.

This is a rebroadcast of an interview I did with Robert Downey Sr. about 5 years ago with my co-host at the time, Kathryn Dunn. Included is a new introduction acknowledging his recent passing.
Wild Pokemons RA Rivera, Erwin Romulo, and Jun Sabayton came out of their mancaves and apocalypse bunkers to talk about their new Youtube 2-part series Ang Fraile, the marriage of art and politics, political and historical satire then and now, the cesspool that is the comments section, and why RA has been reluctant to (re)release Strange Brew out into the world. A timely episode, if we do say so ourselves. Some shows/movies we talk about in this episode: Wag the Dog (dir. Barry Levinson) Idiocracy (dir. Mike Judge) Putney Swope (dir. Robert Downey Sr.) Champoy Sic O' Clock News TODAS Wazzup Wazzup Strange Brew Ikabod Bubwit Kontrabando Follow us on Twitter @endslatepod, or join our Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/endslate for a safe space discussion on pop culture. In honor of Robert Downey Sr.'s recent passing, Matt, David & Dan discuss his biggest hit, Putney Swope. Topics include Paul Thomas Anderson's rabid RDS fandom, Downey's surprisingly humble real-world demeanor and, of course, racism. This episode was recorded several months ago, so if it seems like we're several months out of date, that's why!David recommends Network, available for rent or purchase on all major digital platformsDan recommends Fosse/Verdon, available to stream on HuluMatt recommends Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One, available to stream on HBO Max and Criterion Channel, and Uptight, available for rent or purchase on Amazon and Apple TV.
Another unusual podcast. As we've noted in the past, it's rare that people show up to insist on being interviewed. In this case, it was someone we'd interviewed in the past, in fact a year ago, July 17th, 2020 Anthony Bourdain and Robin Williams stopped by on a podcast named "Exiting Early." (Anthony and Robin appear in the books "Backstage Pass to the Flipside," both interviewed extensively.) But in this case, Anthony wanted to weigh in on the film about his life, called "Roadrunner." He says he was disappointed in it, that the filmmaker "didn't have a clue" as to what happened to him - how he himself didn't have a plan to exit early, and it had nothing whatsoever to do with his relationship with Asia Argento. He pointed out that he thought the AI of his voice sounded "robotic" (neither I nor Jennifer have seen the film) and the ending, having an artist deface a mural on camera for the film was "shitty." Again - I haven't seen it, but I took the time to ask him about it. He also called the filmmaker "amateur" but gave the film a "five" out of ten because at the very least, it had footage that he'd shot in it. I'm a filmmaker myself, member of the DGA/WGA. I was so stung by Ebert's "thumbs way down" review of my film "Limit Up" at the time, when Luana Anders was still on the planet (cowriter of the script) when I asked her to read the review, but to edit out the negativity... over the phone she read "Richard Martini... directed Limit Up." Took me a year to read the negative review. So it gives me no pleasure to tee off on this filmmaker - even though I was a music critic at Variety for years, I always tended to give people the benefit of the musical doubt. If I doubted they're rehearsed, I noted it. In this case, Anthony came forward to tee off on this filmmaker. Wasn't my idea. I tried to ask him cogent questions - and to fill in the blanks. "Why no note left behind?" He answers that eloquently. He talks about how to meditate to help set aside negativity. He talks about finding beauty in gratitude. As I note in the podcast, if you're going to make a film about someone, take the time to see if it's possible to communicate with them. Ask their loved ones if they've had dreams, find three different mediums and ask the same questions (as I do in "Talking to Bill Paxton" on Gaia) take the time and effort to allow the possibility that they might have an opinion on their own story. I can only report. The only editing in this podcast is done for time if there's a long space between me asking a question and Jennifer getting an answer. . Apologies for having to end it early - Charles Grodin, Prince and Robert Downey Sr. ("Greaser's Palace") all make appearances and report things I've never considered or could have heard of. I asked about Robert senior because Luana knew him, he directed her in the film "Greaser's Palace" which is on cable, and ran this week in Santa Monica. Robert Sr. says that his son is already "speaking to him" and the father says he's learning from his son, as well as being proud of him. Prince reminds us that strings tuned too tightly tend to break, a metaphor about finding a "middle way" between not listening to loved ones, and finding a way to "tighten up the string" to allow them to communicate to us by tuning into them. The film cited in this podcast is "Hacking the Afterlife" - it's available on Amazon Prime through Gaia. If you have Amazon Prime it's a small five dollar charge to watch it. It represents ten years of research, and notes the science behind the flipside. Again - I didn't ask for Anthony to come forward, Jennifer did not either, and he had a mouthful to say about his opinion about this film Roadrunner about his life. I don't think he's saying "don't watch it" but he is saying "don't buy the conclusions about who he was, as this filmmaker didn't have a clue." Ask Anthony on one's own. If you knew him, you love him, or even liked him - set the stage for a meditation where he sits across from you and answers questions. An obvious first question would be "So Anthony, how accurate was this podcast I just heard?" Enjoy.

Got your pick axe and gorilla glue handy? Good, because you're gonna need it! We continue our multi-week trek through the Forbidden Zone with our second exploration of the Planet of the Apes franchise with its 1970 entry, Beneath the Planet of the Apes. Join us as we parse the glorious messiness of this film's simultaneous expansion upon and aping of (no pun intended) the themes and ideas introduced in the previous film, the apocalyptic overtones and shocking ending reflective of the fears and anxieties of the late 60s and early 70s, and the inherent problems of attempting to catch lightning in a bottle twice. Listen to the very end to hear a special tribute to the dearly departed filmmakers Robert Downey, Sr. and Richard Donner. Feel free to skip to 1:07:00 for the beginning of our audio commentary. This week on End Credits, we're not back in the movie theatre yet, but we're getting so very close, and we're going to talk a little about that. There's a lot of ground to cover in our first news segment in a while, and we're going to tackle one of the biggest movies released so far in this pre-post-pandemic era, the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe entry, Black Widow. This Wednesday, July 14, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Candice Lepage will discuss: A Donner Party. When the man who made Goonies, Superman the Movie, and the Lethal Weapon movies passes away, you have to mark his passing. The death of Richard Donner is one of the news stories we'll talk about this week, along with the passing of his fellow filmmaker Robert Downey Sr., the next big Zack Snyder project for Netflix, a tomorrow for Tomorrow War, and the plan to finally re-open movie theatres here in Ontario later this week. REVIEW: Black Widow (2021). Can you believe it's been almost two year since we've gotten a new Marvel Studios movie? For 10 years, there's been a new Marvel movie every year, and it's been a decade since Scarlett Johansson first graced our screens as Black Widow, the assassin turned spy turned Avenger who was the first prominent female hero in the MCU. Now, Black Widow finally gets a starring role in her own named film, a globe-trotting adventure that takes her into the past she thought she put behind her, so is Black Widow the movie worth the wait? End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.

Career Q&A with Malcolm McDowell, starring on Amazon's Mozart in the Jungle, on May 10, 2017. Moderated by Jenelle Riley, Variety. Malcolm McDowell has created a gallery of iconic characters since catapulting to the screen as Mick Travis, the rebellious upperclassman in Lindsay Anderson’s prize-winning sensation, If... His place in movie history was subsequently secured when Stanley Kubrick found the actor he was searching for to play the gleefully amoral Alex in A Clockwork Orange; when McDowell himself conceived the idea for Mick Travis’ further adventures in Anderson’s Candide-like masterpiece, O Lucky Man!; and when he wooed Mary Steenburgen and defeated Jack the Ripper as the romantically inquisitive H.G. Wells in Time After Time. For his motion picture work, the American Cinematheque honored him with a retrospective in June 2001, highlighted by showings of his electrifying performances in two major works. The first is Paul McGuigan’s Gangster No. 1, in which McDowell and Paul Bettany portray the consumed, driven title character and which affords McDowell the chance to create a character both on screen and through nuanced voice-over. The second is Russian director Karen Shakhnazarov’s acclaimed and rarely seen Assassin of the Tsar, which Vincent Canby called “a remarkable mystical and psychological exploration of the murder of the Romanov family.” McDowell’s distinctive motion picture characterizations include: Richard Lester’s Royal Flash, Paul Schrader’s Cat People, Rachel Talalay’s Tank Girl, Joseph Losey’s Figures in a Landscape, Bryan Forbes’ The Raging Moon and the Chaplinesque studio boss in Blake Edwards’ Sunset. His film credits are further highlighted by his compellingly sinister Caligula; the brilliant literary editor Maxwell Perkins in Martin Ritt’s Cross Creek; his cameo in Robert Altman’s The Player; and his final incarnation of Mick Travis in Britannia Hospital, the third film in Anderson’s trilogy marking the disintegration of British culture. McDowell’s film work also includes Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius, In Good Company, I Spy, Robert Altman’s The Company, Robert Downey Sr.’s Hugo Pool with Sean Penn, Robert Downey Jr. and Cathy Moriarty; Just Visiting, Mr. Magoo, Hugh Hudson’s My Life So Far, BlueThunder, Neil Marshall’s Doomsday in 2007, Rob Zombie’s Halloween I & II, and the voice of villain Dr. Calico in Disney’s 2008 boxoffice hit, Bolt. In late 2011, McDowell was seen in the Academy Award-winning silent film sensation, The Artist. In addition to recurring appearances on Heroes, CSI: Miami, and The Mentalist, McDowell starred in TNT’s Franklin & Bash as Stanton Infeld. The series lasted for four seasons.
Laraaji is a new-age musician and a laughter connoisseur. While trying to make it as a stand-up comedian, he landed a small role in Robert Downey Sr's 1969 film, Putney Swope. He then paused “to sit down with [him]self and find out what it is [he] wanted [his] life to represent in the mass media”. So began his spiritual journey, which eventually brought him to music and laughter. He went on to collaborate with Brian Eno, release several records, and tour the world with his music and laughter workshops.Laraaji talks to Fez about his journey from stand-up comedy to new-age music, how his spirituality led him to his primary instrument– the zither, the benefits of laughter, laughter as a practice, how to access our bliss, and more. Fez shares an experience he had that left him wondering, "How can we share our bliss?" Laraaji offers some insight.Laraaji's music: www.laraajimusic.bandcamp.comThe lecture excerpt featured in this episode is from "Polishing The Mirror" by Ram Dass. 2 Guys 5 Movies dives into a subgenre of western films this week: the "acid western," a term coined by famed critic Pauline Kael to describe the "trippy" and symbolic nature of Alejandro Jodorowsky's El Topo. Beyond that movie, Frank's list this week also includes Alex Cox's Straight to Hell, Takashi Miike's Sukiyaki Western Django, Werner Herzog's Cobra Verde, and Robert Downey Sr.'s Greaser's Palace. I'm pretty sure this is the first run I've ever aired. Me and Kathryn Dunn had a great interview with writer, actor, director Robert Downey Sr.!!!
Philly to Tel Aviv, Jamaica to Los Angeles, Leonard built a reputation as an honest and reliable drug dealer and drug smuggler, primarily selling hashish and pot, although he personally consumed all manner of consumables. He didn’t get busted or go to prison, but he “found himself” at the movies. Co-Founder, with Robert Downey Sr. of the Reel Recovery Film Festivals, Writers in Treatment and the recently postponed Experience Strength and Hope Awards, Leonard joins us for a fun hour of drug fueled adventures and how living a life awake and aware has kept him sane, productive, drug free and as eccentric as ever. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/burl-barer/support
Erik Childress & Sergio Mims go into the archives for a number of new titles this episodes. There is some real nostalgia for Shout Factory’s Universal Horror Collections and an overlooked war film from Warner Archive. They dust off some titles from Mill Creek ranging from horror and sci-fi to one of the most epic westerns ever. They talk about Kathryn Bigelow’s first film, an appreciation for one of John Hughes’ films and jump to a film from this past summer that got unfairly ignored by audiences. Not to be outdone they also have titles from Brian DePalma, Oliver Stone and a special look at the latest commentary track by Sergio Mims on Robert Downey Sr.’s Putney Swope. Arrow (Weird Science, Hold Back the Dawn, The Loveless) Warner Archive (Merrill’s Marauders) Mill Creek (Anaconda, Eyes of Laura Mars, Ghosts of Mars, Lonesome Dove, Mothra) Lionsgate (Hellboy, Domino, Long Shot, The Doors 4K) Shout Factory (The Universal Horror Collection Vols. 1 & 2) Vinegar Syndrome (Putney Swope)
Lee and Daniel start an extended look into Westerns this week, by starting with the weirdest one on their list, which was also a listener request. This week it's the Robert Downey Sr.-directed Acid Western, "Greaser's Palace" (1972). Criticisms against Catholicism through a hippie counter-culture perspective aside, does the film have anything else much to offer? And if not, does it deserve to be as forgotten as it is today? Why is Toni Basil in this as a naked Native American babe? Also covered: listener comments and what the hosts have watched as of late. If you can feel this podcast you can heal. "Greaser's Palace" IMDB Featured Music: "Tell All the People" by The Doors; "Jesus Gonna Be Here" by Tom Waits & "Mickey" by Toni Basil.

As with Robert Downey Sr.’s 1969 satirical oddity PUTNEY SWOPE, there’s a lot going on in Boots Riley’s new SORRY TO BOTHER YOU, which takes a similar anything-goes approach to the intersection of race and capitalism. In the second part of our “white voice” double feature, we dig into the anti-capitalist philosophy that unites Riley’s work and keeps SORRY TO BOTHER YOU on the rails, then we look at how the two films compare in their views of race and capitalism, and their use of satire and surrealism. Rapper-director Boots Riley has said he hadn’t seen Robert Downey Sr.’s 1969 satirical comedy PUTNEY SWOPE when he made the buzzy new SORRY TO BOTHER YOU, but the films share so much on both a surface level (white men providing the literal voices of black characters) and deeper thematic ones (concerns about capitalism, race, and what it might take to burn down an unjust system) that we had to put them in conversation with each other. In this half, we try to make sense of the fascinating mess that is PUTNEY SWOPE, considering how it works as both satire and comedy, and whether Downey’s choice to overdub his black title character’s voice with his own is an asset or a liability. Plus, feedback on our recent INCREDIBLES 2/GOLDFINGER episodes and some general thoughts on auteur theory and film categorization. Robert Downey Sr. (also known as "The Prince") is known for giving a candid response. Throughout all of the films he has directed he has never been afraid to poke fun at the establishment--little is off limits. This is not to say that he isn't a thoughtful person, though. In this interview the Prince tells Sam about his days in the army (12:40), his early days of filmmaking (28:37), and some of his regrets (49:30). Also, a side note: it was a very hot day when Sam and Robert Downey Sr. sat down to talk, so you can hear the hum of the AC in the recording a bit. Conversation is just as good, though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music for the show is by Dylan Peck.
