He explains why alcohol initially worked for him, how drinking progressed from manageable binges to vodka hidden around the house, and how the death of his brother Beau preceded his descent into crack addiction. Before Hunter arrives, Dave contemplates his recent resentment problem after an argument over Susan's ice cream, reads a letter from a listener currently using cocaine and vodka, and shares stories involving LSD dropped into someone's eyes, a handful of Xanax swallowed during an arrest and a first meth experience that turns into full-blown DEA psychosis. Following the interview, Dave reveals that the Santa Monica studio looked like an “OnlyFans crack den.” After listening to the conversation, the studio operator disclosed that he was only five days free from crack and alcohol. Hunter embraced him in what everyone recognized as a genuine recovery god shot. Who's on Route 66 these days? Les Français Route 66 is turning 100 this year, and communities around the state are gearing up for this milestone birthday. The 2,400-mile highway system stretches from Chicago to Santa Monica, and has always drawn tourists. But as KCRW's Jennifer Swann reports, the promise of Route 66 is not exactly what it used to be.  Meet the Bald Eagles Who Inspired a Movement A pair of majestic bald eagles named Jackie and Shadow became internet sensations after a devoted admirer set up a camera and began livestreaming their nest. Their rise to stardom sparked a movement to protect their fragile habitat above Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains. But the story took a sad turn earlier this month when one of the eagles died. Host Sasha Khokha checked in with KVCR's Madison Aument about what's next for the remaining eagle and its fans. How One Professor is Teaching About Cesar Chavez Now Last spring, when sexual abuse allegations first surfaced about labor leader Cesar Chavez, communities across the state took immediate action – from taking down statues to renaming buildings and painting over murals. But educators had to rethink how they taught students about the farmworker movement. Oliver Rosales teaches history and ethnic studies at Bakersfield College in Delano, where the United Farmer Workers were based. He spoke with host Sasha Khokha about how his curriculum has changed this fall.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Would you like to learn how to accelerate your agency growth ?  https://www.agencymastery360.com/training What happens when two founders build a successful marketing agency without ever clearly defining who owns what? In this episode, John Scheer shares how eight years of overlapping responsibilities created hidden friction inside Herman-Scheer, and how a simple role clarification transformed the business. He explains why moving upmarket after the 2022 downturn required a completely different level of strategy, why bringing in a third partner accelerated growth instead of creating complexity, and how his agency is approaching AI as an amplifier of expertise rather than a replacement for it. If you're leading an agency that's outgrown founder improvisation, this conversation is a masterclass in evolving your leadership before it becomes your biggest bottleneck. What You'll Learn Why undefined founder roles create invisible bottlenecks, even when there's no conflict. How a 360° leadership review helped two co-founders finally divide ownership and improve decision-making. What it really takes to move a digital marketing agency from startup clients into Series A and enterprise engagements. Why adding a third partner succeeded after previous senior hires failed. How to evaluate executive talent beyond impressive resumes. Why AI should accelerate strategic thinking, not replace it. The 10-80-10 framework for using AI without sacrificing creativity or expertise. Key Takeaways Clear ownership creates leverage. When founders stop sharing every responsibility, the team gains clarity, decisions move faster, and each leader can operate at a higher level. Market changes often demand business model changes. Herman-Scheer's shift upmarket after 2022 wasn't just about larger clients; it required stronger strategy, operational discipline, and deeper industry expertise. The right partner fills capability gaps, not title gaps. Their third partner succeeded because she wanted to build alongside the digital agency team instead of managing from above. Great branding is driven by judgment, not just creativity. AI can accelerate execution, but differentiation still comes from human insight and strategic thinking. Founder evolution is less about doing more and more about creating the structure that allows others to lead with confidence. Have you and your co-founder been stepping on each other's toes for years, not because of conflict, but because nobody ever drew the line between your roles? Today's featured guest moved across the country to Santa Monica after his current partner called him and asked him to take a chance on building something of their own instead of "working for the man". It took eight years of figuring out what not to do, a 360 review that finally split their roles, a niche into healthcare and wellness, and eventually a third partner to unlock what the agency is today. He'll walk through how the role division changed everything, why going upmarket after 2022 forced a more rigorous kind of work, and what he actually thinks AI is doing to branding. John Scheer is the co-founder and chief creative officer of Herman-Scheer, a branding agency based in Los Angeles focused on healthcare, self-care, and well-being. They work with clients at three inflection points: zero to one startups, high-growth companies around Series A and beyond, and enterprise legacy businesses looking to regain relevance. Two and a half years ago they brought on a third partner with 20 years of operational and insights experience, which shifted the agency's growth trajectory significantly. In this episode, we'll discuss: Two founders. No defined roles. The decision to move upmarket as a response to a shifting market Why the third partner hire worked Subscribe Apple | Spotify | iHeart Radio Sponsors and Resources E2M Solutions:Today's episode of the Smart Agency Masterclass is sponsored by E2M Solutions, a web design and development agency that has provided white-label services for the past 10 years to agencies all over the world. Check out e2msolutions.com/smartagency and get 10% off for the first three months of service. The Two-Headed Monster Problem For eight years, John and Chapin ran Herman-Scheer without defined roles. Neither of them was trying to undermine the other. They just both did everything: sales, creative direction, project leadership, client management. Clients did not always know who to call. The internal team did not always know who to go to. And both founders kept stepping into the same spaces without realizing it was costing the agency something real. The shift came from an outside advisor who ran a 360 review and surfaced the pattern clearly. Chapin got voted in as chief executive and John got voted in as chief creative. The way John sees it, they both got promoted at their own agency. This way, clients knew who handled creative direction and who set operational direction. The internal team had a clear routing system. And for the first time, each founder could fully commit to a lane without the other one also running it. That kind of clarity is not just organizational tidiness. It is what makes both roles more effective and makes the agency feel less like two people doing the same job. Why Going Upmarket After 2022 Required a Different Kind of Agency John's agency spent several years focused primarily on zero-to-one startups, building deep roots in the Los Angeles venture capital and entrepreneurial community. It worked well until 2022, when the economic environment shifted and early-stage funding dried up. Founders who had been raising millions to launch consumer products suddenly could not. The client base Herman-Scheer had depended on was no longer buying at the same rate. The response was a deliberate move upmarket toward Series A and beyond, and eventually toward enterprise legacy brands looking to regain relevance. That shift required closing the gap between brand strategy and execution, getting closer to conversion rather than staying in the lofty world of brand identity alone, and integrating more rigorous insights work into the process. The outcome is that Herman-Scheer no longer competes on portfolio or personal chemistry alone. The decision to work with them is a decision to work with people who understand the healthcare and wellness consumer, the mechanics of those businesses, and what brand actually has to do at each stage of growth. The Third Partner Hire and What Made It Work John and Chapin hit another plateau several years after the reset. Revenue was solid. Growth had stalled and they both knew they did not have what it took internally to push through it. At this point, their advisor introduced them to Allison Servey, who had been head of strategy and insights at a major agency and had reached the point where her job was managing people and traveling rather than doing the work she was good at. They'd already tried with big-company hires and failed, but hiring a senior person who wanted to roll up her sleeves again was the filter. People who come from large organizations where 10 people supported a single role often struggle in lean agency environments. Allison came in wanting to be close to the work, not above it. Within two and a half years she had helped manage out the people who were not a fit, brought in strong people from her network, and shifted the agency's operational foundation in ways that made the growth trajectory possible. What AI Is Actually Doing to Branding John is confident enough in his work to know that AI is not a replacement for creative thinking. What it has done is allow people to get ideas out more efficiently, which is genuinely valuable when used correctly. The problem is what happens when junior people or clients start treating the output as the finished work rather than as a starting point. Herman-Scheer now includes language in their contracts preventing clients from submitting AI-generated onboarding forms. This means clients were doing it, submitting AI-filled questionnaires without reading them, and expecting the agency to build a strategy from questions answered by a chatbot with no real context about the business. He makes sure AI usage at his agency complies with the 10-80-10 framework: 10% great thinking and prompting going in, 80% of the lifting done by AI, and 10% refinement and judgment coming out. That ratio requires real expertise at both ends. Without it, the middle 80% produces the average of everything the model has seen, which is not a brand strategy. It is a synthesis of other people's brand strategies. Do You Want to Transform Your Agency from a Liability to an Asset? Looking to dig deeper into your agency's potential? First, music lawyer and Instagram creator Ryan Schmidt breaks down how catalogs get valued, the difference between the multiplier method and discounted cash flow analysis, and why an audit can uncover money you didn't know you were owed. We also get into name, image, and likeness rights, AI licensing, and where Ryan thinks the biggest growth opportunities are for artists and songwriters. Then we bring in two companies already working in this space. Sho Mitchell from Beatlibrary walks us through what a catalog valuation tool actually looks like in practice, and Rob Steiner from Luminate shares data on the current state of the catalog acquisition market. Revenue Recovery: How to Recover Lost Music Royalties

There's no lost and found for your royalties. If you don't claim them, they don't come looking for you, and depending on where the money's sitting, you may only have a few years before it's gone for good.   This week we kick off a new thread inside our Rising Tide miniseries: the eight revenue multipliers in music. We're starting with revenue recovery, the money that's already been earned but never made it back to the artists, songwriters, and producers who are owed it. We talk to three companies attacking this problem from three different angles.   Jason Feinberg, who leads Kosign at Kobalt Music, breaks down why revenue recovery is such a persistent problem in the first place, the fundamentals every artist needs to register (PRO, MLC, SoundExchange), and why an hour spent getting your metadata in order might be the most profitable hour of your career. Jeff Ponchick, co-founder and CEO of Mogul, explains how his company built something like "the Plaid of the music industry," centralizing royalty data across every platform an artist is owed money from, and why up to 50% of artist catalogs are registered incorrectly without anyone realizing it. Rob Brown, chief revenue officer at mprs, zooms into a corner of revenue recovery almost nobody talks about: the master points owed to producers, mixers, engineers, and top line songwriters, and how something as small as an unsigned letter of direction can freeze a producer's income entirely.   If you're a music tech company solving problems like these, come demo on the beach and network with the ecosystem at the Music Tectonics Conference, October 27 to 29 in Santa Monica.   The Music Tectonics podcast goes beneath the surface of the music industry to explore how technology is changing the way business gets done. While he initially had reservations about the idea, he's now optimistic about its potential to bring people back to the area. He also discusses the importance of security and law enforcement presence at these events, which he believes will help keep out the undesirable element. The conversation also touches on the topic of ticket scalping and the need for regulation in the industry. The speaker argues that tickets should not be treated like a commodity, and that there should be a limit on the profits made by scalpers. Jeff Bliss begins with the Super El Niño building in the Pacific, reaching record-high temperatures that promise severe drought and wildfires for California, a state currently unprepared for these atmospheric changes. In Seattle, Mayor Wilson recently fired the police chief following a shooting catastrophe, revealing the chief lived in Chicago and was absent during major incidents. The segment explores Seattle's history of "police-free" zones and the Democratic Socialists of America's platform, which now advocates for dismantling the US government into a unicameral legislature. The report shifts to Idaho, where a tragic shooting at an In-N-Out restaurant resulted in casualties and raised community concerns. In Los Angeles, a massive cleanup of a rotting meat locker in East LA has created toxic air conditions, while residents fight against the facility's rebuild. Bliss describes the "homeless industrial complex" in Santa Monica, highlighting multi-story cardboard shelters that reach up to five stories high. Finally, the file covers Governor Gavin Newsom's presidential aspirations and public frustration over his incomplete tax returns, which showed a $2 million annual income. (1)

Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

Describing the sound of Sacred Harp singing can be difficult. Arcane, otherworldly, and overwhelming, it's a unique a cappella form of shape note Christian hymn singing that was born in England in the 18th century, but took root in the American south. It's not something you listen to so much something as experience.  This week on Transmissions, host Jason P. Woodbury speaks with Matt Hinton. Along with his wife, Erica Hinton, he's the director of the 2006 documentary Awake, My Soul: The Story of The Sacred Harp; in 2025, the duo returned to the film, remastering it and crafting a full update. This month, the film is screening in the Los Angeles area, including showings in Glendale, and Santa Monica, at the Laemmle Glendale, Laemmle Royal, and the Monica Film Center.  Sacred Harp utilizes a  shape note system, in which shapes—triangles, circles, squares, and diamonds—are paired with syllables—fa, sol, la, and mi—to represent the notes in the traditional scale. Awake, My Soul explores the culture that centers around this form of communal worship, and invites viewers into this strange musical world.  In addition to his work as a documentarian, Matt Hinton is a musician himself. He's a member of the rock band Luxury, which features three Orthodox priests. He made a film about that group too, the 2019 movie Parallel Love: The Story of a Band Called Luxury.  Though the soundtrack for Awake, My Soul, as well as a companion disc, Help Me to Sing: Songs of the Sacred Harp, featuring John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, Danielson, Richard Buckner, The Innocence Mission, author Rick Moody, and more, have long been out of print, they returned to streaming last month as the film celebrates its 20th anniversary. Join us this episode as we dig into the nature of communal singing, folk traditions, and the mysteries of sacred sound.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

As the slightly unhinged, or maybe more than slightly, mayor of Las Vegas, Jo Pezzimenti on HBO's Hacks, Lauren Weedman leaves a hilarious and unforgettable impression, so much so that she's a nominee for Best Supporting Actress at the upcoming Emmy Awards. Audiences might also know her as Melissa's sister, Kristin Marie Schemmenti on Abbott Elementary. Frankly, we don't know what's up with those character names rhyming but it's a little unsettling. Lauren has also been seen in the series Looking, Hung, and the New Girl. Also, and this has nothing to do with television, she sometimes picks up lots of heavy rocks in her home state of Indiana and carries them all way back home to Santa Monica where she paints them and gives them of gifts to friends. She's no geologist, rocks are just rocks, and she collects and distributes them. She's going to tell you all about this. Lauren also happens to be a long-ago friend of our host John Moe from back in the 1990's Seattle theater scene when many important bands were making it big and Lauren and John weren't in any of those bands. Eight Revenue Multipliers of the Music Industry

What's your music catalog actually worth, and where is the industry still leaving money on the table?  This week, Dmitri is joined by our chief writer Tristra Newyear Yeager for a deep dive into eight revenue multipliers that they believe can grow the total addressable market for music. Building on last month's conversation with Eleanor about the rising tide thesis, Dmitri and Tristra break down each multiplier one by one: catalog valuation, revenue recovery, artist and label services, licensing, AI licensing, fan growth, fan revenue, and new music products. Along the way, we mention a ton of companies that are actually building in this space right now, so keep an ear out if you're looking for tools to grow your own business. They talk about where catalogs are becoming an investable asset class, why the industry still has multiple black boxes leaking royalty revenue, and how distributors are evolving into full platforms for artists and labels. They also dig into the complicated economics of AI licensing, from training data to generation to the songs that come out the other end, and look at emerging companies working on attribution, revenue recovery, and fan monetization across the space. This episode is part of the Rising Tide miniseries, tied to this year's Music Tectonics Conference theme, Rising Tide: Grow the Music, Grow the Value. The conference takes place October 27 to 29, 2026, in Santa Monica.   Companies mentioned: Royaltyport, Beatlibrary, Primordial, Legitary, Luminate, Chartmetric, Viberate, Mogul, MusicInfra, Shine-X, Claimy, Curve Royalty System, AIMS, ONErpm, Orphiq, beatBread, SongStats, Sound Credit, LyricFind, Soundstripe, feed.fm, Soundtrack Your Brand, Merlin Connect, ClicknClear, Musical AI, Vocana, Laylo, Symphony OS, Audience Republic, Rap Fame, OpenStage, Fave, Even, Patreon, Vinyl Bar in Shibuya, Hook, AudioShake, Kitbetter, Tiny Vinyl.   The Music Tectonics podcast goes beneath the surface of the music industry to explore how technology is changing the way business gets done. On a scarier note, DSA co-chair Megan Romer went on Shannon Bream’s show and openly called for abolishing the Senate, replacing the presidency and Supreme Court, abolishing borders and ICE, defunding the Pentagon, abolishing prisons, and ending corporate ownership. Yikes. Two people missed the Alaska cruise when it left Seattle at 5 p.m., then spent two days chasing it down by plane, boat, and taxi just to catch up in Ketchikan — and it turns out Timmy had met the guy 13 years earlier. Waymos are causing chaos in Santa Monica by clustering in the same charging zones, and a judge has ordered them to stop. The Boyle Heights warehouse fire aftermath continues with lingering stench, flies, and rodents as kids head back to school. And Costco has somehow become cool with Gen Z and Gen Alpha — the kids are all over the food court, snagging designer dupes, buying merch, and even throwing Costco-themed parties. That's the question host Dmitri Vietze presents to Vickie Nauman, founder of CrossBorderWorks, in this episode of Music Tectonics. Vickie has spent over two decades at the intersection of music and tech, working on sync licensing for video games and virtual worlds, and pioneering the concept of minimum viable music. This is episode three in the Rising Tide miniseries, built around the theme of this year's Music Tectonics Conference, Rising Tide: Grow the Music, Grow the Value, taking place October 27 to 29, 2026 in Santa Monica. Dmitri and Vickie unpack why technology and the music business have always clashed, why music is usually first to be disrupted by new platforms, and why volume based streaming rewards top artists while leaving mid tier and independent artists behind. They also get into generative AI, AI licensing deals, and why Vickie believes the future of music creation is not human versus AI, but a blend of both. They close out on gaming as an untapped revenue opportunity, why most super fan apps fail to gain traction, and what gives Vickie hope about the next generation of musicians and fans. Topics include music industry trends, music tech, artificial intelligence in music, music streaming, music licensing, sync licensing, gaming and music, and super fan monetization. EPISODE 150 -  “CEDRIC GIBBONS: ARCHITECT OF HOLLYWOOD DREAMS” - 7/27/2026  This week, we're going behind the scenes of Classic Cinema to focus on an artist who had a huge impact on the visual storytelling of film.  You may not even know his name, but he is credited on over 1000 films. What would The Wizard of Oz be without the Emerald City?  What would The Women be without Mary Haines' divine apartment?   And what would the Oscar statuette be without this man's design? Of course, we're talking about celebrated Art Director CEDRIC GIBBONS — one of the most influential artists in film history.  He served at MGM as supervising art director for a record 32 years — from 1925 to 1956.  Winner of 11 Academy Awards, nominated for a total of 39, Gibbons created the look and tone we now think of as synonymous with that MGM sparkle. Is the multi-brand arms race really about guests, or is it just an elaborate play for developers and distribution?  Edwin makes the case that independent hotels have a competitive advantage no loyalty algorithm can replicate. Scott drops the hottest take of the episode: loyalty points have become hush money for operational failures. And Ben shares a story about a boutique hotel that turned a jackhammer nightmare into a lifelong brand loyalist — no points required. Then the World Cup post-mortem. Bank of America's final numbers are in — $20 billion pumped into the U.S. economy, RevPAR up 90% in Kansas City, 55% in San Francisco. Miami crushed it. But three separate properties reached out to Scott after the final whistle with the same question: now what? No social strategy. No post-event plan. No follow-through. The panel unpacks what hotels actually got right, what they blew, and why this should be a wake-up call for independent operators ahead of the 2028 Olympics. And to close it out — a game. It's Route 66's 100th anniversary, and CoStar toured the surviving motels still operating along the highway. The panel plays Keep, Kill, or Reimagine across six properties. Clark Gable's old room, a freshly rehabbed motor court with a paint can still in the bathtub, and a pink-walled Santa Monica hotel sitting on land worth more than the building. The Tim Conway Jr Show Hour with Andy Riesmeyer Hour 1 (7.20) Andy Riesmeyer is filling in for Tim Conway Jr. tonight, kicking things off with the tragic shooting near Santa Monica Pier early this morning after a fight broke out — another sad sign of how far the once-beautiful Santa Monica has fallen. Andy rants against AI-generated art, posters and music, noting Spotify now has 100 million songs (up from 25 million last year) with many likely AI-created. On a lighter note, meet Jimothy — the adorably weird raccoon from Seattle with a congenital spine condition giving him long legs and a short back — who’s become an internet star with his own tattoos. A hot new dating dealbreaker for women? Men who still have roommates. And in a real “shell” of a story, six people were busted at Santa Monica Pier for poaching 34 spiny lobsters (some pregnant) in backpacks, gym bags, and a baby stroller — caught by Fish & Wildlife officers with the help of lobster-sniffing dogs.
