In a recent episode of A Modern Nonprofit Podcast, host Tosha Anderson sat down with Greg Miller, President and CEO of Penn-Mar Human Services, to discuss the critical issues of recruitment, retention, and strategic partnerships in the nonprofit sector. With over three decades of experience in human services and nonprofit management, Miller shared valuable insights on how organizations can attract and retain top talent while fostering meaningful partnerships. Mission-Driven Recruitment Miller emphasized the significance of hiring for mission rather than just function. He stressed that potential employees and volunteers should have a clear understanding of how their work contributes to the organization's overall mission. This approach not only attracts individuals who are passionate about the cause but also helps in retaining them for the long term. At Penn-Mar, the focus is on helping recruits understand how they fit into the organization's mission of supporting people with disabilities. This clarity of purpose has been instrumental in attracting high-caliber talent and reducing turnover rates. In the EU elections, voters in France, Germany and Italy have shown an increasing appetite for populist anti-immigrant parties. The French president Emmanuelle Macron has reacted by calling a snap parliamentary election after his party was beaten into second place in the EU poll by Marine le Pen's National Rally.   In Germany, the Social Democrats, the party of Chancellor Olaf Scholz were pushed into third place by the nationalist AfD. The result still leaves the EU parliament dominated by traditional centre right and centre left parties but for how long will that remain the case?  And what do these results tells us more broadly about the appeal of the far right in Europe. O'Neal's arrival marked a turning point in the 70-year history of the organization, and his leadership was instrumental in keeping the organization running by increasing retail operations by 3000 percent during his tenure as the Vice President of Retail Operations (1999 – 2007).O'Neal brought a distinct level of professionalism to the retail side of the organization, a characteristic that quickly spread throughout the organization. He knows the successful reach of Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona's mission is due to the hard work and innovation all employees exhibit every day. O'Neal recognizes talent and feels it is important for the organization to cultivate leadership at all levels. He is most proud of the transparency the nonprofit presents, as well as the workplace culture that regularly earns top marks on “Best Places to Work” rankings.Goodwill's founder, Edgar Helms, envisioned providing people in need with the skills and opportunities that lead to self-sufficiency by providing a hand-up, not a handout. Take care of your people and they'll take care of everything else. The purpose is community, taking care of your fellow humans. No matter what people think, you and I can make a difference and that's why it matters. As a leader, make sure that your organization has enough resources to weather any kind of storm that comes up. Be careful about the decisions you're making today. Keep in mind that you have a responsibility to care for your team when tougher times arrive. Why wouldn't you want to communicate and be transparent? It saves you the hassle of having to relay messages over and over to make sure that everybody's on the same page. "If you're the leader, the number one job, you have to take care of your people. Episode 8 of the Border Wars Podcast is about El Salvador. On October 15, 2018, the U.S. Department of Justice designated La Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) as a major transnational criminal organization. Consecutive governments in El Salvador tried to negotiate with MS-13 leaders in efforts to calm down gang violence and reduce the high-rate of homicides. These efforts failed. Former Washington Post investigative journalist and U.S. Defense Department consultant, Douglas Farah, has been investigating gangs in El Salvador since their formation in the 1990s. Published by the Institute for National Strategic Studies (INSS), his most recent report argues that MS-13 is no longer simply a street gang but rather a Community-Embedded Transnational Armed Group (CETAG) that operates in several countries with a structured order of battle and political power. Doug's work on gangs and transnational organized crime pioneered a new concept called "criminalized states," which we discuss in the latest episode of the Border Wars Podcast. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Components of Strategic Clarity [Strategic Perspectives on Long-term AI Governance, #2], published by MMMaas on July 2, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is post 2 of an in-progress draft report called Strategic Perspectives on Long-term AI Governance (see sequence). Over the last 5 years since the appearance of Allan Dafoe's research agenda, there have been many developments in the field of Long-Term AI Governance. However, the field is still young and remains open-ended. Working definitions There is uncertainty over key terms within the field, around both different types of advanced AI, and the practice and field of AI governance. Both have seen different definitions [see Appendix 1]. For this discussion, I define Transformative AI as: “AI systems that have extreme and practically irreversible effects on the long-term trajectory of society, including disruption comparable to the industrial revolution, and/or potential existential risks.” I define the field of Long-term AI Governance as: “The study and shaping of local and global governance systems—including norms, policies, laws, processes, politics, and institutions—that affect the research, development, deployment, and use of existing and future AI systems in ways that positively shape societal outcomes into the long-term future.” I define a Strategic Perspective as: "A cluster of correlated views on long-term AI governance, encompassing (1) broadly shared assumptions about the key technical and governance parameters of the challenge; (2) a loose theory of victory or impact story about what solving this problem would look like; (3) a set of historical analogies to provide comparison, grounding, inspiration, or guidance; (4) a set of intermediate strategic goals to be pursued, and near-term interventions or actions that contribute to reaching them;” Challenges for Long-term AI Governance The Long-term AI Governance community faces a series of challenges. It remains an incipient field with a small pool of active researchers from just a handful of institutions. It remains at least partially pre-paradigmatic, with underdeveloped or unpursued research lines. There are challenges around intra-community legibility, with many researchers not aware of what others are working on; - or understanding what are the assumptions, views, or cruxes that drive different people's choices about what to research and investigate. In search of strategic clarity The lack of clarity is a problem, because the community of Long-term AI Governance identifies strongly as an impact-focused project. We are not just intellectually curious about advanced AI; we are motivated to find ways to make this future go well. However, as has been noted, the community lacks strategic clarity around which intermediate goals or policy actions should be pursued. Specifically, there is pervasive uncertainty not just about the technical landscape of TAI, but also about robust nearer-term activities or even goals for policy. As a consequence, various people have emphasized the importance of high-quality research to ‘disentangle' the field, scope out key parameters for governance, and the identification of interventions that are robustly good. Is strategic clarity what we need most? There could be debate over whether an effective Long-term AI Governance community requires: strategic clarity - i.e. a sensible and grounded theory of change, providing a detailed, even ‘gears-level' model of both the technical landscape and the policy world, with a resulting clear roadmap for near-term or intermediate interventions; strategic consensus - i.e. (almost) everyone in the Long-term AI Governance community shares the same roadmap or perspective–the same model of strategic clarity; or- strategic coherence - i.e. interventions by different people or communities in th...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Strategic Perspectives on Long-term AI Governance: Introduction, published by MMMaas on July 2, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is the introduction of an in-progress report called Strategic Perspectives on Long-term AI Governance (see sequence). Aim: to contribute to greater strategic clarity, consensus, and coherence in the Long-term AI Governance field, by disentangling current and possible approaches, and providing insight into their assumptions and cruxes. Practically, the aim is for this to enable a more informed discussion about what near-term actions we can or should pursue to ensure the beneficial development and impact of Transformative AI in the long-term. Epistemic status: attempted theory-building, with all the strengths and pitfalls of map-drawing . Draws on years of research in the space and >2 year of focused conversations on this topic, but views are tentative, presented in order to enable further discussion. Status: This is a project that I will be producing over the coming months. The breadth of topics and perspectives covered means that some sections are hastily sketched: as I continue developing the report, I welcome feedback and commentary. I am grateful to the many people who have already given feedback and encouragement so far. Primer Tl;dr: look at this Airtable. The Long-term AI Governance community aims to shape the development and deployment of advanced AI--whether understood as Transformative AI (TAI) or as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)--in beneficial ways. However, there is currently a lack of strategic clarity, with disagreement over relevant background assumptions; what actions to take in the near-term, the strengths and risks of each approach, and where different approaches might strengthen or trade off against one another. This sequence will explore 15 different Strategic Perspectives on long-term AI governance, exploring their distinct: assumptions about key strategic parameters that shape transformative AI, in terms of technical landscape and governance landscape; Theory of victory and rough impact story; internal tensions, cruxes, disagreements or tradeoffs within the perspective; historical analogies and counter-examples; recommended actions, including intermediate goals and concrete near-term interventions; suitability, in terms of outside-view strengths and drawbacks. Project Roadmap (Links to be added as entries come out) I introduce and sketch this sequence (you are here); I give a background and rationale for this project, by discussing some of the challenges faced by the Long-term AI Governance field, comparing strategic clarity, consensus, and coherence, and mapping how other work has contributed to questions around strategic clarity. A recording from the 7th of May 2020, from the series “The Left Reflects on the Global Pandemic” by transform! Europe When we say, that we as the left are acting in Solidarity, when we claim to reshape the way we do politics, when we build networks, we are taking for granted an answer to a very complicated question: who, specifically, is the “we” to which we refer. In this episode of the Mosaik-Podcast, Professor Gayatri Spivak, confronts us with this question. She reminds us, that solidarity can easily become an empty signifier, if we do not try to understand and analyse the different social, economic, and political contexts of the people we claim to defend. We tend to misperceive the Global South as one, homogeneous world. In this context, Spivak discusses the longstanding plight of the Rohingya people – a stateless, predominantly Moslem ethnic group, who have been victims of genocide in Myanmar since 2017. In recounting the displacement and atrocities experienced by these people, Spivak not only describes the effects of COVID-19 on international aid provided, but also to make a clear distinction between being a migrant and being stateless.   Οne of the most critical points she makes, involves the issue of humanism during the pandemic. Thus far, people have had to rely solely on their human behaviour to manage this crisis. However, we should be aware that the middle class is lending a particular meaning to this kind of humanism, one that incorporates petit-bourgeois family values and what we can call ‘digital idealism’. She goes on to explain why the core issue today, is citizenship and how the agents of social justice and emancipation will be citizens as such, since the variable of class is not accessible to us in the way it used to be. For Spivak, class solidarity is not going to be central to the social movement of our times. Even though, during this pandemic crisis, we did witness an increased recognition of the value of workers performing essential services, this will not last. Spivak posits, that we have entered a new mode of production, pointing out that Marx was clear that the value form is not eternal. Nonetheless, the left’s emancipatory outlook is already established: it is the simple conviction that capital must not take priority over human beings. She goes on to discuss the burning issue of the subaltern and specifically, the ability, or otherwise, of the subaltern to speak for itself. Spivak’s position on the issue is clear: The subaltern can speak, but cannot be heard. Or as she puts it: ‘Their speech act cannot be completed because they speak, but we cannot hear.’ As such, the subaltern must be understood as a position, a disposition, because they do not resemble each other. We cannot identify the subaltern because they cannot be generalized. Gayatri Spivak is one of the most prominent intellectuals of our times, a post-colonial scholar, literary theorist, and feminist critic. She has been a University Professor at Columbia University and an activist in rural education and of feminist and ecological social movements for decades. She lives in New York. The interview was conducted by Monika Mokre, a political scientist and an activist in the fields of immigration, asylum, and imprisonment. Hilary Wainwright: The pandemic is making us more open to radical ideas

A recording from the 5th of May 2020, from the series “The Left Reflects on the Global Pandemic” by transform! Europe The United Kingdom has had a poor record in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. Hilary Wainwright attributes this to two factors in particular: Firstly, the arrogance of Boris Johnson, who was very late to recognise the seriousness of the disease and implement a lockdown, and secondly, the unpreparedness of the UK’s health system. In fact, Britain under Johnson shares these two characteristics with the United States under Trump, which helps explain why the coronavirus pandemic has hit both of these countries so hard. In the fifth instalment of our podcast series, Wainwright criticizes the mainstream discourse, that the pandemic is in some way making all people equal. During the lockdown, for example, inequality among UK citizens was striking. Workers and the working class are far more exposed to the virus, especially in large cities such as London. They live in small apartments located in densely populated areas. They shop in crowded supermarkets, without being able to take adequate protective measures. Many of them – particularly the more precarious – had to continue to travel to work, mostly using the highly congested underground. The situation was completely different for more affluent people living in middle-class areas. Wainwright goes on to discuss, how the overwhelming issue of the pandemic, has left no space for debates regarding Brexit, neither in the general population nor within Labour. Despite its defeat in the election of Labour leadership, the Labour left (such as Corbyn, McDonell, Momentum, and The World Transformed) remained very active, intervening in the public arena with programmatic proposals for the post-coronavirus era. At the same time, Wainwright describes how people are open to militant and radical ideas due to the crisis. This includes: State interventions in the economy, with the goal of meeting the needs of the people and rather than the goals of markets. The need to increase the funding of the NHS and of the rail system, together with the reduction of air travel, and the search for more ecological forms of transportation. She hopes that the movements, the trade-unions and the left will be more successful in dealing with the impending deep recession than they were during 2008 crisis, where the response came at the expense of the working people and to the benefit of banks. Hilary Wainwright is British sociologist, political activist and socialist feminist. She is the editor of Red Pepper magazine and author of several books, such as “A New Politics from the Left”. Those who have following the series will also recognize the voices of Haris Golemis and Angelina Giannopoulou. A recording from the 16th of April 2020, from the series “The Left Reflects on the Global Pandemic” by transform! Europe To Nancy Fraser, the management of the COVID-19 pandemic represents further proof of the decline of the United States as a world power. The strategy chosen by the Trump administration, to deal with this crisis, has clearly failed. However, Fraser argues, that to understand why, we need a deeper analysis of the structural and systemic features of US capitalism. The idea, that getting rid of Donald Trump would automatically solve these issues, is too simplistic.    For her analysis, Fraser goes on to explain the concept of Social Reproduction. She describes it, as a set of activities and capacities in society, that are necessary to produce, reproduce and replenish the human population. This includes the ability to have a healthy, informed, culturally endowed, skilled and educated population. Beyond literal biological reproduction, this includes care – raising children and caring for the elderly. But also care in the sense of the replenishment of adults in the prime of life and in the workforce, who have to be fed, who have to be rested, who have to have emotional solace when they are discouraged and who need to feel connectedness. Social Reproduction does not take place exclusively in private households. It involves all communities’ activities, neighborhoods, networks and friendship. Throughout history, this work of social reproduction, was never sharply disconnected from other work of production of food or material objects. In capitalism however, the work of production has been separated from the work of social reproduction. No production without reproduction Fraser also observes, that in the pandemic we are witnessing the centrality of the distributive work. The workers at Amazon, UPS, FedEx, in grocery stores and super markets, are willingly exposed to danger and, in the midst of the pandemic, declared to be “essential workers”. In this moment, the work of social reproduction becomes visible. There is no production without social reproduction and vice versa. Nancy Fraser is a critical theorist based in New York, one of the leading figures in contemporary feminist theory, and known particularly for her work on the theory of Social Reproduction. Among her many publications, she recently co-author Feminism for the 99%: A Manifesto. Our frequent listeners will also recognize the voices of Haris Golemis and Angelina Giannopoulou. A recording from the 9th of April 2020, from the series “The Left Reflects on the Global Pandemic” by transform! Europe To date, the deaths of over 35,000 people in Italy have been attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the third edition of our series on the Left and the Pandemic, Luciana Castellina points out, that Italy’s high number of coronavirus cases and its high fatality rate were a problem occurring mainly in the wealthiest part of the country. The regions most affected, were those in the north: Lombardia, Piemonte and the Emilia Romagnia. And this, despite the fact, that the health system in the north was still functioning quite efficiently, despite the cuts in funding and staff over the last decades. Instead, she attributes the impact of the virus to the structure of the economy in these regions. They are characterized by thousands of small enterprises, officials who travel continuously throughout the world, and very high levels of pollution, brought on by a combination of industrialization and topography of the region. The Italian government fortunately took preventive measures rather quickly. This included a lock-down, as fought for by trade-unions, who had gone on strike demanding improved health protection at work. Castellina goes on to criticize the position of Giorgio Agamben, who claims that the measures taken lead to a state of exemption. She believes that his views are typical of a Western obsession for individual liberty and the loss of any sense of belonging to a community. She contrasts this with China, where she believes such a sense of community remains, and where she describes citizens easily accepting the seclusion imposed on them by the government. Amidst the tragedy of the pandemic, Castellina retains her optimism. She sees the possibility that the left and social movements can take advantage of what she considers to be the “positive” effects, at least in Italy. On the one hand, she sees a return of solidarity, which goes together with a feeling of belonging to a collective entity. On the other, she is optimistic about an increased awareness for the importance of ecology and the protection of nature. Feeling frustrated by the fact that some EU member states failed to act in solidarity with the countries hit most heavily by the coronavirus, she appeals for the building of a European subject. According to her, this must be achieved through European movements, mobilization, strikes, and the media. Luciana Castellina is the co-founder of the Italian newspaper Il Manifesto, as well as the Partito di Unità Proletaria, a former Member of the European Parliament, where she was president of its Culture, Education and Foreign Economic Relations committees. Moreover, she been Deputy to the Italian Chamber of Deputies, the former president of Italy’s academy of motion pictures, author of numerous books and one of the leading figures of Italy’s left since 1970s. The Interview was conducted by Haris Golemis, who is a Scientific and Strategic Advisor of transform! Europe and the Chief Editor of transform’s Yearbook. A recording from the 7th of April 2020, from the series "The Left Reflects on the Global Pandemic” by transform! Europe There is deeper lesson to be learnt from the pandemic: Even where money was spent on public care systems, it was spent in the spirit of marketisation. As such, the problem becomes not one of spending. Rather, it becomes a problem of the introduction and fostering of competition. In the very first edition of our new podcast series with Transform! Europe, we are proud to present insights by Leo Panitch. In his conversation with Kate Hudson, he goes on to explain further lessons for the left that became evident during the pandemic. Such as, that our basic needs must be provided by a democratic public sector, that Amazon workers, for example, who proved to be so essential during this period, need to be public employees. Our main struggle will have to be that, of meeting people’s basic needs far beyond the Keynesian welfare state, through the provision of public services, through taking key industries, including finance, into the public sector and making them public utilities. And we must do this in a way that democratizes these institutions in the process. On the role of the European Union, Panitch reminds us that the EU is a capitalist project, rooted in the goal of free movement of capital. And the EU is a project in crisis. A crisis rooted in the lack of solidarity and the discipline imposed by some member states over others. Panitch speaks to the need to fight the far right and rising xenophobia, to re-establish the left and working-class institutions, trade unions, mass parties, and the new parties that were formed around the attempt to rebuild the working class of the 21st century. He makes a case for a new type of internationalism, capable of coordination with regards to capital movement and which speaks to taxation. He proposes nothing less, than a new democratic and ecological mode of economic planning. Leo Panitch is Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Political Science at York University in Toronto. He is the Co-editor of the Socialist Register whose annual volumes he has edited for past 35 years. He is Co-author, together with Sam Gindin, of the award-winning book The Making of Global Capitalism: The Political Economy of American Empire, a remarkable piece of the political economy of contemporary global capitalism. The Ιnterview is conducted by Kate Hudson. She is the General secretary of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in the UK. She is also managing editor of the journal Transform UK, and is a national officer of Left Unity, a member party of the European Left. The conversaion is moderated by Angelina Giannopoulou, a Political scientist and facilitator for Transform! Europe, in the programme “Strategic Perspectives of the Radical Left and European Integration”. The Mosaik-Blog is delighted to collaborate on this podcast with transform! Europe, a network of 34 European organizations in 22 countries, active in the fields of political education and critical scientific analysis. The network is the recognized political foundation of the Party of the European Left. After the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the series "The Left Reflects on the Global Pandemic" was launched, in which various befriended intellectuals were asked to share their reflections, assessments and proposals regarding the crisis. In today's episode of The Business of Intuition we hear how one CEO has mastered three challenges every leader, sooner or later, has to face:To accept their strengths and weaknesses and to feel deserving of the top position in the company,If needed, to remove or reassign employees in order to build and protect a strong culture,To communicate a 10-year plan when everyone else can only see quarterly goals. Tim O'Neal is CEO of Goodwill of Central and Northern AZ, and has spent the past 18 years focused on the vision of ending poverty through the power of work. When O'Neal was brought on the organization was in serious financial trouble and at risk of having its membership removed by Goodwill Industries International. O'Neal's arrival marked a turning point in the 70-year history of the organization, and his leadership was instrumental in keeping the organization running by increasing retail operations by 3000 percent.  Today Goodwill has become a community leader in educating and connecting people to meaningful work and diverting millions of pounds of goods from AZ landfills.  Tim will also share valuable insights into how to:Use intuition when making key decisions,Earn the trust and loyalty from employees, Board members and community leaders,Engage people in a vision when no one can see beyond the day to day. Goodwill's founder, Edgar Helms, envisioned providing people in need with the skills and opportunities that lead to self-sufficiency by providing a hand up, not a handout. O'Neal believes wholeheartedly in carrying out this mission to better the lives of everyone in our state. He knows the best way to bring a positive impact to Arizona is to work together, collaborate, and cultivate partnerships with community members, organizations, and leaders.O'Neal holds a Certificate in Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management from the Harvard Business School Executive Education program. O'Neal graduated in June 2010 from Goodwill Industries International's Executive Leadership Development program, which drives excellence, strategic planning and personal development skills for top executives in the industry. In this episode Dean and Tim discuss:The danger of complacency in successful organizations and how to look out blind spots that might bring you down. How working on the culture of our organization can be one of your biggest assets, by strengthening bonds and underscoring your vision. How being able to tap into your intuition is enhanced in a culture of trust, and how to build it.Turning things around by changing mindsets, having a vision, and being able to see opportunities where others would see issues. Key Takeaways: You have to know what's going on in the business, and then to make appropriate changes.Make sure it's always people first, no matter whether it's inside or outside.Stay true to your vision, empower your people, and trust them to do their thing. Tim balances his attention to data and detail with insight and intuition.  Two studies support this kind of balance:  A  Harvard Business Review article said that the higher up you go, the more important intuition becomes, because it makes executives better listeners, decision makers and creative problem solvers. The New Jersey Institute of Technology studied the relationship between intuition and business success and found 80 percent of executives whose companies' profits had more than doubled in the past five years had above average intuition skills. Resources:  How the Mighty FallDeveloping The Leader Within YouThe Obstacle is the Way Connect with Tim O'Neal:LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/tim-o-nealWebsite: Tim O'Neal | Goodwill of Central ArizonaEmail: timoneal@goodwillaz.org Connect with Dean Newlund:  Twitter: Mission Facilitators (@mfileadership)Facebook: Mission Facilitators - HomeWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/Email: info@mfileadership.com  Phone: 1-800-926-7370  Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Yan Lianke is one of China's most influential living writers. His often-satirical works have earned him an international readership. He has been touted for the Nobel Prize in Literature. And yet, most of Yan's books are effectively (if not formally) banned in China. Ben brings together three previous guests (Tricia Baldwin, Elizabeth Goodyear-Grant and Daniel Woolf) to discuss the rise of China, the absurdity of modern life, and what government power will look like in the future. Their point of departure is a 2018 profile of Yan Lianke in The New Yorker magazine. Note: you don't need to read anything before listening to the conversation; the below piece is a starting point only. Read the article in The New Yorker by Jiayang Fan. Read the blog post for this episode. About Yan Lianke Yan Lianke has secured his place as contemporary China’s most essential and daring novelist, “with his superlative gifts for storytelling and penetrating eye for truth” (New York Times Book Review). His newest novel, The Day the Sun Died—winner of the Dream of the Red Chamber Award, one of the most prestigious honours for Chinese-language novels—is a haunting story of a town caught in a waking nightmare. Yan was born in an impoverished region of Song County, Henan Province in 1958. His parents, illiterate farmers who lacked the means to send him to university, encouraged him to enlist in the army, where he rose in the ranks to become a propaganda writer. Upon returning to civilian life, Yan embarked on a career as a novelist. Over the last 30 years, he has produced an extensive body of work that ranges from novels, novellas and short fiction to essays and criticism. Although he has had two of his novels banned in China and was, for a period of three years, prohibited from obtaining a passport or travelling abroad, Yan continues to speak honestly about the impact that government censorship—and self-censorship—have had on contemporary Chinese writers. His full-length novels include: The Dream of Ding Village (丁庄梦, Ding Zhuang Meng), a tale of the blood trade and subsequent AIDS epidemic in a rural Henan village; The Joy of Living (Alt title: The Living, 受活, Shou Huo), a sweeping tale of the lives of disabled rural villagers from the Chinese Communist revolution through the years of reform and opening; The Sunlit Years (日光流年, Riguang Liunian); Solidity of Water (also called Hard as Water, 坚硬如水, Jianying Ru Shui) and Serve the People (为人民服务, Wei Renmin Fuwu), which was banned in China and later translated into English, French and Japanese. He has published ten collections of novellas and short stories: among them, the critically acclaimed Days, Months, Years (年月日, Nian Yue Ri), Song of Balou (耙耧天歌, Balou Tiange) and a five-volume set of his collected works. He is a member of the Chinese Writers’ Association and the recipient of numerous literary awards, including the first and second Lu Xun Literary Prizes and the Lao She Award for literary excellence, awarded in recognition of his novel The Joy of Living (受活, Shou Huo), considered by many to be his master work. Yan is also a winner of the Franz Kafka Prize.   About the Guests Tricia Baldwin Listen to Ben's previous podcast conversation with Tricia (Episode 12 on The Role the Arts Play) Tricia Baldwin became the Director of the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts (‘the Isabel’) in December 2014, and works with a tremendously talented team at the Isabel. Tricia is responsible for its programming featuring top diverse emerging and established artists, education, student and community engagement resulting in significant increase in audience participation, socially engaged art, and facilities management. She established the Isabel as an arts incubator for new works, the Ka’tarohkwi Festival of Indigenous Arts with curator Dylan Robinson, the Isabel Human Rights Arts Festival, and the Isabel Overton Bader Canadian Violin Competition. Tricia is the co-creator of Queen’s University’s new M.A. in Arts Leadership program with Queen’s Dan School of Drama and Music, and is the course developer and instructor of the program’s Contract Negotiations in the Arts graduate course. A champion of training the next generation of arts leaders, Tricia has been a mentor with the Canadian Heritage Talent to Lead Program and the Cultural Career Council of Ontario Mentor Program. Tricia recently served on the International Association of Venue Managers Association conference panel on arts management education. Prior to the Isabel, Tricia Baldwin was the Managing Director of Tafelmusik from 2000 to 2014. During this period, Tafelmusik doubled its operating revenues and increased its endowment seventeen fold. The orchestra undertook over 50 national and international tours, created 20 recordings and films that garnered significant industry awards and nominations that led to the launching of its recording label and digital concert hall, established artist training programs attracting pre-professional musicians from around the world, and undertook a successful $3M venue renovation. Tricia also headed up Tafelmusik’s expansion of venues within Toronto that contributed to the doubling of earned revenues and significant audience development. Prior to Tafelmusik, she was the Executive Director of Ballet British Columbia and General Manager of the Kingston Symphony. Tricia received her Bachelor of Music (University of Toronto) and her MBA (York University), and has continued her education with courses from Harvard Business School, University of Oxford School of Continuing Studies, the Harvard Kennedy School, and Boston University. Tricia Baldwin has been awarded the Canada Council for the Arts’ John Hobday Award in Arts Management, a scholarship to attend Harvard University’s Strategic Perspectives in Non-Profit Management program, First Prize for Student Philosophy Essay from the University of Oxford School of Continuing Studies, and the Queen’s Human Rights Initiative Award. As a volunteer, she currently serves on the Advisory Board of the York University Schulich School of Business Arts, Media, and Entertainment Management program, the City of Kingston Arts Advisory Board and Professional Development Working Group, and St. Lawrence College Music and Digital Media Program Advisory Committee. Learn more about Tricia. Elizabeth Goodyear-Grant Listen to Ben's previous podcast conversation with Elizabeth (Episode 37 on US Politics: Women, Polarization and the Media) Elizabeth Goodyear-Grant (Ph.D. McGill) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Studies at Queen’s University, and the Director of both the Queen’s Institute of Intergovernmental Relations (IIGR) as well as the Canadian Opinion Research Archive (CORA). Her research focuses on Canadian and comparative politics, with particular interests in electoral politics, voting behaviour, and public opinion; news media; and the political representation of women. She is the author of Gendered News: Media Coverage and Electoral Politics in Canada (Vancouver: UBC Press, 2013), which won the 2016 Pierre Savard Award from the International Council of Canadian Studies, and was one of three books shortlisted for the Canadian Political Science Association’s 2014 Donald Smiley Prize. In Gendered News, Goodyear-Grant presents compelling evidence that gender structures certain aspects of news coverage of candidates and politicians – not how much they’re covered, but certainly how they’re covered – and demonstrates that these differences can impact negatively on female candidates’ and leaders’ electoral prospects and political careers, contributing to the persistent under-representation of women at all levels of politics. Goodyear-Grant has also published work on attitudes toward democracy and political representation, attitudes toward the use of referenda, and so on, all part of a larger research agenda that concentrates on representation and political behaviour published in venues such as Political Behaviour, Politics & Gender, Electoral Studies, Commonwealth & Comparative Politics, and the Canadian Journal of Political Science. In the Department of Political Studies at Queen’s, Goodyear-Grant teaches courses on campaigns and elections; women, gender, and politics; Canadian politics more generally; and empirical methods. Learn more about Elizabeth Goodyear-Grant or follow her on Twitter (@eplusgg). Daniel Woolf Listen to Ben's previous podcast conversation with Daniel (Episode 10 on History and Jazz) Daniel Robert Woolf is the 20th Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s University, a role he stepped into on September 1, 2009. It wasn’t his first time on the campus, of course: Principal Woolf studied at Queen’s as an undergraduate in the late 1970s, graduating with a degree in history in 1980. After earning his doctorate at Oxford University (DPhil’83), Dr. Woolf returned to Queen’s in 1984 as a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) postdoctoral fellow in history. His teaching career took him from Queen’s to Bishop’s University, before he joined the history department at Dalhousie University in 1987. Seven years later, he became a full professor, then associate dean and later, the acting dean of Graduate Studies. In 1999, Dr. Woolf moved to McMaster University, where he held the role of dean of the Faculty of Humanities. He joined the University of Alberta as dean of Arts in 2002. Dr. Woolf, who is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, the Royal Society of Canada and the Royal Historical Society, admits that learning he would become the principal of his alma mater initially inspired feelings of “shock, elation, and a little bit of fear,” and he continues to regard his role as both an honour and a challenge. A specialist in early modern British cultural history and the history of historical thought and writing, Dr. Woolf continues to teach at Queen’s on a part-time basis as a professor in the Department of History, and also pursues his own research and writing. He is the author or editor of a number of scholarly articles, monographs and books, including the five-volume Oxford History of Historical Writing (2011-2012) and a textbook on historiography entitled A Global History of History (Cambridge University Press, 2011), which has been translated into several languages. But Principal Woolf isn’t just about books (though he does have a growing collection of old and rare ones!) – he is also a fan of music (especially jazz), classic movies and is the father of three (one of whom is also a Queen’s graduate). Born in London, England, Dr. Woolf grew up in Winnipeg. A love of academia runs in his family: his mother taught English at university, his physician father was a member of a medical school faculty, and his uncle is a historian of modern Europe. Dr. Woolf, who began his second term as principal in 2014, is motivated by Queen’s students and by their dedication to making a difference in the world. While the university is a bigger place than it was when he was a student, it is also more research-intensive and has a more diverse student body. Since taking the helm, Dr. Woolf has built new connections with government, industry and institutions across Canada, led Queen’s through an extensive series of planning exercises, established the Principal’s Commission on Mental Health, and overseen the Initiative Campaign, the most ambitious fundraising campaign in Queen’s history. Principal Woolf’s term concludes on June 30, 2019.
