#805: Omnissa CMO Renu Upadhyay on balancing AI innovation with org chart disruption

What if the biggest risk to your marketing AI strategy isn't the technology itself, but the org chart it's fracturing? Agility requires more than just speed; it demands a framework of trust and collaboration. When it comes to AI, this means your ability to innovate is directly tied to your ability to partner effectively across the organization, especially with IT and security. Today, we're going to talk about a critical tension point in the modern enterprise: Marketing is moving at the speed of AI, adopting powerful, often low-code tools to drive results. But this speed creates new complexities and risks, disrupting traditional roles and processes. Success is no longer just about having the best tech stack; it's about forging a strategic partnership between the CMO and IT leaders to balance innovation with governance, and productivity with security. To help me discuss this topic, I'd like to welcome, Renu Upadhyay, Chief Marketing Officer at Omnissa. About Renu Upadhyay Renu Upadhyay is senior vice president of Marketing at Omnissa, leading global marketing strategy, demand generation, product and solution marketing and brand to establish Omnissa as the leading digital work platform company. Winston Churchill once said, “Success is going from failure to failure without a loss of enthusiasm.” That's a nice sentiment—I mean, by and large it's good to let failure be a learning experience, to not let it discourage you from following your dreams. But…hear me out here: What if you're just a hot mess? What if every time you go from one failure to the next, you leave a pile of bodies in your wake? Can you be a little TOO good at failure? Should you sometimes maybe acknowledge “Hey, maybe this thing I'm trying to do isn't one of my strengths”? I think some of the people in this week's episode would have left the world a better place if they'd thrown in the towel.Registration is now open for CrimeWave 2.0! "When you're blessed, it's very important to look back and give back and bless others." "If you're a leader and you're not creating more leaders, something is wrong with your leadership." "You cannot be what you cannot see." "Everybody can teach you something if you're, if you're teachable and willing to learn." "With everything you're doing, you've got to ask yourself, 'How am I growing every day?' And you got to reflect and ask yourself, 'How am I better? How will I be better tomorrow?' And if you're not reflecting, you're not growing, and you're stuck in the same thing." "If you are a leader and you have a great message, but you cannot communicate it, and people can't receive it, then you're going nowhere as a leader." "Success for me is how many people I have impacted and brought along on this journey, because we are on this journey of inspiring each other. We're on a journey. And it's not, did we get to the destination." "Your role as a leader is not positional. Your role is to serve others, is to bring others along. It's, 'I'm in this position because I want to bring others along,' and I'm humble enough to understand that I may not know it all, and there's going to be people that I am leading that would know more than I do. But it's about how we complement each other's strengths, to be able to to work together and bring each other along." "If you're not learning every day, then you're not growing every day. If you want to understand how Robert F. Kennedy Jr. became the face of American public health, you have to go back to the Covid era. Medical authorities spoke with certainty: Trust the science. Don't listen to skeptics. But a lot of people stopped trusting experts entirely when outsiders got some things right and the establishment got some things wrong. Now those outsiders are in charge, like my guest this week. Dr. Jay Bhattacharya is the director of the National Institutes of Health. The Mindset Shift That Separates Burnout from Breakthrough You've been told self-care is bubble baths and boundaries. But what if the real self-care is becoming the kind of person who doesn't need to recover from their own emotions every week? That's exactly what Dr. Gabrielle Lyon and I dig into in this episode. Dr. G is a board-certified physician and New York Times bestselling author who has worked with some of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world. And she says the ones who sustain success over time have one thing in common: they stay neutral. Big win? Neutral. Big problem? Neutral. It's just another Tuesday. We go way beyond nutrition and fitness in this conversation. We're talking about why emotional neutrality is one of the most underrated entrepreneurial skills, why discipline is actually the new self-care, and why your health quietly determines how far your business can go. Dr. G also shares how to catch yourself before old patterns start creeping back in and how to use your physical body as a tool for confidence and clarity. If you've ever felt like your emotions are running your business instead of you, this one's for you. HERE ARE THE 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE: 1️⃣ Emotional Neutrality Is a Skill, Not a Personality Trait – The best entrepreneurs don't ride the highs and lows. They stay steady because as high as you let yourself go, that's how hard you'll crash. Neutrality isn't boring. It's sustainable. 2️⃣ Discipline Is the New Self-Care – Another episode or glass of wine isn't self-care if they pull you away from your standards. Real self-care is keeping promises to yourself, honoring your commitments, and building trust in your own word. 3️⃣ You Will Never Outgrow Your Health – Your business has a ceiling, and it's your body. You cannot outgrind your physiology. If you want to scale, your health has to come first. Not as a nice-to-have, but as the foundation everything else stands on. In this solo episode of the Do Good to Lead Well podcast, I unpack the concept of empathy and leadership. Although considerable research has shown the multiple benefits of empathetic leadership, it may have become a victim of its own success. As it has become increasingly integrated into leadership conversations, there are widespread misunderstandings about what it is and what it is not. While empathy is often viewed as ‘all about feeling,' there is more to the concept. I'll explore its multidimensionality and rather than being one sole element, the secret sauce is how all of this comes together. When only one aspect of empathy is tapped, it's an incomplete picture. What You'll Learn- The science behind the power of empathy in leadership.- The most common way people use to define empathy.- Why affective (e.g., emotional) empathy is only one aspect of high empathy leadership.- The crucial difference between empathic joining and empathic concern.- The power of perspective-taking.- How inaction can be at the heart of leadership excellence.KEYWORDSPositive Leadership, Empathy, Emotional Intelligence, Leadership Excellence, Strategic Thinking, Personal Growth, Communication, 360-Feedback, Affective Empathy, Cognitive Empathy, Empathic Concern, Empathic Joining, Leading with Intention, Leading with the Heart and Mind, The Power of Thoughtful Inaction, CEO Success

As we explore Dr. Lane's insights and experiences, it's clear that the path to meaningful change in education lies in building strong connections among teachers, parents, and community leaders, all united by a common goal: creating an environment where every child can thrive. In an inspiring dialogue that traverses the nuances of educational leadership, Dr. James Lane shares his transformative journey from a full-time musician to a prominent figure in the educational landscape. With a career spanning local school districts to the U.S. Department of Education, Lane reflects on the pivotal moments that have shaped his leadership philosophy. He emphasizes the importance of being exceptional in one's current role as a precursor to future opportunities—a sentiment he and his mentor echo. This principle, ‘be great where you are,' serves as a cornerstone for Lane, who believes that respect for one's work fosters future opportunities. As the conversation unfolds, Lane provides a candid analysis of the current challenges facing education, particularly the teacher shortage and the pressing need for systemic change. He underscores the importance of teacher support, competitive pay, and positive working conditions as essential elements in attracting and retaining quality educators. By sharing his new initiatives and the focus of his upcoming role at University Instructors, Lane not only breaks news but also underscores the urgency of addressing the teacher crisis. His insights serve as a rallying cry for those invested in the future of education, urging them to advocate for meaningful change and to recognize their agency in fostering a supportive educational ecosystem.Takeaways:Dr. James Lane's journey from musician to educational leader highlights the importance of adaptability and following one's passion. The key to effective leadership in education lies in inspiring and empowering teachers, not just managing them.Engagement between parents and teachers is crucial, as better communication leads to improved student outcomes and community support.Addressing the teacher shortage requires understanding the root causes, such as pay and working conditions, to attract and retain quality educators.Successful educational reform must balance policy with the realities teachers face in the classroom, requiring practitioners to guide decision-making.Dr. Lane emphasizes the need for a systemic approach to education that includes collaboration among all stakeholders for the benefit of students.Links referenced in this episode:leadingwithlaserfocus.compdkinternational.orguniversityinstructors.com

Agile in Construction: Team Happiness as the True Measure of Scrum Master Success in Construction With Felipe Engineer-Manriquez Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes.   "The teams that are having fun and are light-hearted, making jokes—these are high-performing teams almost 99% of the time. But the teams that are overly sarcastic or too quiet? They're burning out." - Felipe Engineer-Manriquez   Felipe offers a refreshingly human definition of success for Scrum Masters: team happiness. After years of traumatic experiences in construction—days when he pounded his steering wheel in frustration during his commute—Felipe developed what he calls being a "human thermometer." He can sense a team's emotional state within 5 minutes of being with them. His proxy for success is a simple Likert scale of 1-5: 5 is Nirvana (working at Google with massages), and 1 is wanting to jump out the window. Felipe emphasizes that most people in construction internalize stress and push it down, so you have to ask directly. When he asked an estimator this question, the man quietly admitted he was at a 2—ready to walk away. Without asking, Felipe would never have known. The key insight: schedule improvements happen as teams move closer to a 5. And the foundation of it all? Understanding. "People do not have an overt need to be loved," Felipe shares from his Scrum training. "They have an overt need to be understood." A successful Scrum Master meddles appropriately, runs toward problems, and focuses on understanding teammates before trying to implement change.   Self-reflection Question: If you asked each of your team members to rate their happiness from 1-5 today, what do you think they would say, and what would you learn that you don't currently know? Featured Retrospective Format for the Week: Start/Stop/Keep Felipe's favorite retrospective format is Start/Stop/Keep—but his approach to introducing it is what makes the difference. He connects it to something construction teams already know: the post-mortem. He explains the morbid origin of the term (surgeons standing around a dead patient discussing what went wrong) to emphasize the seriousness of learning. Then he reframes the retrospective as a recurring post-mortem—a "lessons learned" cycle. Start: What should we begin doing that will make things better? Stop: What should we no longer do that doesn't add value? Keep: What good things are we doing that we want to maintain? Felipe uses silent brainstorming so everyone has time to think, then makes responses visible on a whiteboard or digital display. The cadence scales with sprint length—45 minutes for a week, 2 hours for two weeks, half a day for a month. His current team committed to monthly retrospectives and pre-writes their Start/Stop/Keep items, making the facilitated session efficient and focused.   [The Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast Recommends]

Seeing others succeed can be a powerful source of inspiration. Once we know something is possible for others, then it also becomes possible for us. Take the sub-four-minute mile for example. At one point, it was thought impossible for a human to run a mile in less than four minutes and that pushing so hard would cause the runner's heart to explode. On May 6th, 1954 Roger Bannister was the first person to run a sub-four-minute mile. Less than six weeks later John Landy not only ran a sub-four-minute mile, he beat Bannister's time. Something went from being impossible, to being done, to having other people doing it. While it can be encouraging to see others enjoy success, sometimes that becomes a tool for us to beat ourselves up emotionally. We see that we are working as hard, if not harder, than others and yet we are not having success. This can lead us to question our effort, our ability, or whether success is even possible for us. Other people's success just highlights our own failure and we feel defeated rather than encouraged. This week in the podcast we tap for those times where we feel we have failed because we aren't having the same success as those we see around us. If you have ever felt like you are working as hard (if not harder) as the people around you and there must be something wrong with you because you are not getting the results you want, then this week's podcast was recorded just for you. Throughout his academic journey, Mitch rarely felt comfortable in the classroom. It took him seven years to graduate from college—a reflection not of ability, but of disconnection. He often experienced education as something happening around him, not something he was actively part of. That sense of isolation fueled his desire to create a different kind of learning experience. When Mitch became a teacher, he brought with him a deep empathy for students who felt unseen or overwhelmed. He quickly realized that before we can effectively teach content, we must first build the foundation for learning. That foundation is structure, consistency, and support. To meet this need, Mitch created Organized Binder—a simple, research-backed system that empowers teachers to explicitly teach executive functioning skills without sacrificing instructional time. By establishing predictable learning routines, teachers foster safer, more inclusive classrooms where students gain confidence, independence, and a sense of belonging. Ben shares insights from his varied roles throughout his tenure with Disney and emphasizes the value of building relationships and connections along the way. He also touches on his philanthropic efforts supporting Ukrainian families affected by war through the efforts of To Ukraine with Love. This episode offers valuable advice for anyone navigating career changes, fostering curiosity, and maintaining optimism.Eccles Business Buzz is a production of the David Eccles School of Business and is produced by University.fm.Eccles Business Buzz is proud to be selected by FeedSpot as one of the Top 70 Business School podcasts on the web. Learn more at https://podcast.feedspot.com/us_business_school_podcasts. Episode Quotes:Ben reveals how building relationships and connections shaped his career path[12:41] The other theme besides curiosity that might emerge in this conversation you'll hear me say again and again is the importance of building relationships and building connections. Whether that be, as we've been discussing, to help manage a business that you're part of, or whether it's building your career, connecting to those that are further on in their careers that may be able to provide advice or guidance. I remember an experience as a student when I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do. I didn't really know what I wanted to do, and so I sat down and interviewed, in effect, 10 or 12 local businesspeople and asked them all about their jobs. I'd say, What do you like about your job? What do you hate about your job? What does your family think of your job? Do you make a lot of money? Do you not make a lot of money? What education did you have? Should I be thinking about an MBA? All of those questions. And the lesson I learned from that, walking away from all those interactions, there's not one that stands out to me as, Oh, that was the one; that was the silver bullet; that person knew everything that needed to be known. In reality, what happened was it was me talking about my interests and hearing other people react to those interests, and hearing a little bit about that helped me in my own mind to crystallize what I thought was sort of the right path for me, and that process of discussing and exploring different opportunities in different fields was really what helped me shape my own direction. On why students shouldn't be afraid to approach mentors and industry leaders[15:43] At the outset you do have to have a little bit of self-confidence to pick up the phone or send an email or a text or whatever to reach out and make that connection. But what I found, and I think what most people will find, is that people are eager to share their own experience and eager to give advice. They feel flattered, right? When you reach out to them and say, “Hey, you're smarter than me; tell me what I should do.” And so, if I could dispel the fear that some people feel about reaching out, know that most people are eager to share their experience and talk to especially students. How being curious and making bold moves helped Ben get to where he is today[17:18] I thought to myself, I'm capable. I can certainly explore it, right? Figure it out and try and make that move, and through a series of interactions and connections and opportunities that I was able to find myself in the role I'm in now supporting the television side of the business, which is so funny. I came into this a little bit naive, right? Thinking, oh, finance is finance and Disney is Disney. But in reality, the television business is very different than the parks and resorts business, and it took a long time for me to learn the business, to get to know the people, but it's the same thing. It's the same thing I was doing at the call center, right? It's, you know, find the guy who's running the tech, who's asking you questions, figure out how the business works, how the business runs. Connect with the people, understand who's making decisions and guiding the business, and get to know them and let them get to know you, and that'll serve you well. It served me well, certainly.Show Links:Ben Holley | LinkedInTo Ukraine with LoveUtah Entrepreneur ChallengeDavid Eccles School of Business (@ubusiness) | InstagramUndergraduate Scholars ProgramsRising Business LeadersEccles Alumni Network (@ecclesalumni) | Instagram Eccles Experience Magazine

If you made resolutions this year and you've already broken them, or you're close, you're not alone. Most people don't fail because they lack discipline. They fail because they don't understand how faith actually works. In this week's CyberChurch message, The Faith of God, I take you into Mark 11 and the story of the fig tree to show you why real change often starts invisibly. When Jesus spoke, nothing seemed to change at first, but the change had already begun at the root. Words spoken from the heart carry power, and many people cancel their own faith by speaking doubt, fear, or old beliefs about themselves before anything has time to manifest. If you want your decisions to last, they have to be rooted in who you are, not just what you want. That's why I encourage you to spend time with my book, Wired for Success, Programmed for Failure. It will help you develop your heart so that what you build actually lasts.

In this conversation, Chris Trottie (Trottie Golf) pulls back the curtain on what it really takes to walk away from corporate security, bet on yourself, and build a data-driven golf brand from scratch—all while being a present dad, husband, and serious player.  We dig into identity, pressure, energy management, and how to use data and equipment the right way to actually lower your scores instead of just chasing new gear. In this episode, you'll learn: How Chris reinvented himself from tour rep to global brand—and the identity he had to let go of. Why he spent five years quietly preparing his "rope bridge" before finally making the jump. How to use data to build unshakable confidence in your game and your business decisions. The overlooked power of time to think—and why surfing and golf became his "boardroom." How to set realistic expectations on the course using dispersion, not fantasy. Why your clubs should evolve as your handicap drops—and when to get re-fit. How to structure your days, guard your energy, and use "treats" and trips as ROI, not guilt. Get your pencils ready and start listening.  P.P.S. Curious to learn more about the results my clients are experiencing and what they say about working with me? Read more here. More About Trottie Chris "Trottie" Trott is one of the most respected figures in the modern golf equipment world, known globally for his expertise in club fitting, product education, and tour-level equipment performance.  He spent more than 20 years with TaylorMade Golf, working directly with some of the best players on the planet as a Tour Representative and Senior Manager of Global Sports Marketing. During his tenure, he became a trusted resource for elite pros seeking precise fittings, equipment adjustments, and performance insights. After two decades inside one of the most influential brands in the game, Trottie transitioned into entrepreneurship, building Trottie Golf into a leading digital resource for golfers who want to understand their equipment on a deeper, data-driven level.  Through his YouTube channel—which now serves as his primary platform—he breaks down complex club concepts, showcases tour player insights, and educates everyday golfers on how to choose gear that actually improves performance. Data is the antidote to doubt in both golf and business; when the numbers prove it works, you stop negotiating with your fear. If your equipment isn't evolving as your game improves, your clubs become a bottleneck, not a competitive advantage. Most golfers don't struggle with talent—they struggle with expectations that don't match their actual dispersion and ability. Time isn't your most valuable currency—high-quality energy is, and every late night, drink, or distraction taxes your upside. You can't go far alone; building a trusted team around your strengths multiplies your impact while you stay in your zone of genius. Strategic self-rewards—cars, trips, retreats, club memberships—aren't indulgences, they're symbols and fuel that keep you chasing the next level. Key Quotes: "I realized the only way I was going to unlock my full potential was to back myself—and at some point, not jumping became the bigger risk." "None of the businesses I'm involved in work without me; once I accepted that, every negotiation and decision became a lot clearer." "If your expectations are higher than what the data says you're capable of, you're signing up for constant disappointment and terrible decisions on the course." "I spent five years building a rope bridge into a concrete bridge—by the time I stepped on it, I'd have been an idiot not to go." "You can work three weeks insanely hard and not see a nickel, then have five quiet days and everything hits—that's the reality of betting on yourself." "If you want your name to mean something in this game, you have to risk more than the person who's happy staying on the paved road." "Most people dream of success; the few who actually get it are the ones who wake up, protect their energy, and work hard at it every single day."
