Episode 538: High Performing Women and Why They Lose Attraction in Relationships When They Lead

    Habits and Hustle

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 20, 2026 12:00

At a certain level of success, dating stops feeling simple. When you are disciplined and used to leading in every room you walk into, attraction is no longer just chemistry. It becomes about polarity, power, and whether you genuinely respect and admire the person you are with. This Habits & Hustle episode breaks down the psychology behind dominance and attraction, and why some driven women lose interest the moment they feel like they are making every decision and carrying the mental load. We also get into the idea that equal doesn't always create desire and why many high-performing women are drawn to men who are stronger, decisive, and confident enough to lead. If you are building at a high level and realizing that leading everything is killing attraction, tune in. What's Discussed (00:38) Why some high-performing women want men “better” than them (01:58) Attraction to strength, success, and dominance in relationships (02:45) Why women lose attraction when they feel superior (05:05) Settling for easier partners vs real desire (07:05) Success shrinking the dating pool for ambitious women (07:46) How a confident man softens an alpha woman (11:21) Decision fatigue and wanting a partner who just handles it Thank you to our sponsors: Rho Nutrition: Try Rho Nutrition today and experience the difference of Liposomal Technology. Premarital counseling isn't a “just in case” thing. It's one of the smartest ways to protect a happy relationship before real life stress hits. These premarital tips can prevent years of communication problems and quiet resentment later. Want a stronger marriage? Start building emotional intimacy before you're in crisis mode. Most couples don't struggle because they stop loving each other. They struggle because no one ever taught them the skills that help love last. In this episode of Love, Happiness and Success, I'm talking with my colleague Jesse Stanley about what premarital counseling actually is, why it matters, and how learning relationship skills early can change the trajectory of a marriage. We explore some of the most important premarital counseling questions couples should ask before marriage, including how to talk about money, conflict, expectations, emotional intimacy, and the family patterns each person brings into the relationship. If you've ever wondered what premarital counseling is, or whether premarital and marital counseling can help couples build a stronger foundation before problems begin, this conversation will give you a very real and practical perspective. Jesse Stanley is a licensed marriage and family therapist with a military background who creates a judgment-free environment where growth and healing flourish. He helps individuals and couples build deeper, more satisfying relationships, navigate major life transitions, recover from heartbreak, manage stress, and create happier, more fulfilling lives. In this raw episode of Do Good to Lead Well, I welcome Tom Hardin, whose journey from Wall Street hedge fund analyst to one of the FBI's most prolific informants is a powerful examination of what drives good people to cross ethical lines. Despite the widespread belief that corruption comes from major events, Tom outlines the subtle drift and rationalizations that can turn ambition into poor decisions.Tom makes a compelling case that most people are far more vulnerable to contextual pressures than they would care to admit. In fact, he argues that the more confident we are in our belief that we are incorruptible, the more likely we are to make an ethical misstep. Through honest storytelling, the episode urges us to move beyond blaming or distancing ourselves, challenging us to ask better questions, reflect on our own values, and foster workplaces where psychological safety and true accountability can thrive. For anyone seeking a deeply personal and vulnerable understanding of ethics, culture, and resilience, this conversation delivers practical tools for self-reflection, leadership, and building lasting trust. These heartfelt lessons matter at every level of business and life. What You'll Learn- Why 80% of us are at risk of “moral drift” if we're not vigilant- The crucial difference between mistakes and choices- Culture is what gets rewarded- How leaders can spot and stop ethical slippage, starting with “the little things”- The power of asking better questions—not just of your team, but of yourself- Why honesty, humility, and self-forgiveness are the real superpowers in leadershipPodcast Timestamps(00:00) – The Decision to Share a Profound Story of Vulnerability(05:14) – Cheating is a Choice(09:19) – Ownership, Shame, and the Challenges of Self-Forgiveness(13:06) – Moral Drift and Rationalization(16:35) – How to Spot Warning Signs(24:05) – Culture, Values, and Leadership(40:01) – Resilience and Redemption(45:08) – Radical Listening(48:22) – A Story of Hope and Personal AgencyKEYWORDSPositive Leadership, Insider Trading, Behavioral Ethics, Organizational Culture, FBI Informant, Compliance, Self-Reflection, Vulnerability, Rationalization, Psychological Safety, Ethical Culture, Whistleblowing, Character Development, Integrity, Reputation vs. Character, The Peril of Incentive Structures, Ethical Decision-Making, Personal Values, Resilience, Redemption, Asking Clarifying Questions, Moral Drift, Organizational Justice, CEO Success

Ever wonder why some contracting businesses grow into valuable companies while others stay stuck in survival mode? Many owners work long hours, generate leads, and push for growth, yet their business still depends completely on them. The real challenge isn't just getting customers it's building systems, leadership, and value that allow the business to scale and eventually sell. In this episode of The Better Than Rich Show, host Mike Abramowitz sits down with Lynn Wise, author of Build It, Grow It, Sell It: Nine Steps to a Thriving Contracting Business. With more than 40 years of experience owning and operating multiple successful service companies, Lynn shares practical insights for contractors who want to grow a business that doesn't rely on them every day. Lynn explains the common mistakes contractors make when trying to scale, especially around lead management, marketing accountability, and operational systems. He breaks down why many businesses spend thousands on marketing but still struggle to turn leads into scheduled jobs. According to Lynn, the problem is rarely marketing itself it's the lack of focus on lead management, systems, and follow-through. The conversation also dives into the long-term goal many owners overlook: building a business that has real transferable value. Lynn outlines how contractors can move from being a technician running a job to becoming a business owner leading a company. He shares how leadership, systems, and strategic planning help businesses grow sustainably while also preparing them for an eventual sale or transition. Whether you're a contractor, home service owner, or entrepreneur trying to build a company that runs without you, this episode offers practical strategies for creating a profitable and scalable business.  Timestamps [00:00] Introduction to Lynn Wise [01:20] The biggest problems contractors face with marketing and leads [03:40] Why businesses spend money on marketing but see poor results [06:10] The real issue behind lead conversion failures [09:05] Building systems that support growth [13:30] Transitioning from technician to business owner [17:10] Leadership and accountability in growing companies [22:15] Why many contracting businesses fail to scale [27:05] The importance of operational focus [32:40] Creating a business that can eventually be sold [38:10] Long-term planning for contractors [43:20] Final lessons from 40+ years in the trades  Key Quotes “Many contractors think they have a marketing problem when they actually have a systems problem.” “Leads don't grow businesses systems that convert leads grow businesses.” “The goal isn't just to run a business. The goal is to build a business that works without you.” “Contractors who focus on operations and leadership create companies that last.” “If your business depends entirely on you, you don't own a business you own a job.”  Key Takeaways Focus on converting leads before spending more on marketing. Build systems that allow your company to operate consistently. Shift from technician thinking to business owner leadership. Create processes that reduce dependency on the owner. Plan long-term so the business can eventually be sold or transferred.  Links Mentioned Build It, Grow It, Sell It – Nine Steps to a Thriving Contracting Business https://www.amazon.com Contractor in Charge https://www.contractorincharge.com Connect with Lynn Wise on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com   Email: Subject Line Options: Lynn, your episode is packed with wisdom. Your Better Than Rich episode just dropped. This conversation will help contractors everywhere.

What if the very beliefs driving your success are also the ones quietly burning you out? In this episode of The Greatness Machine, host Darius Mirshahzadeh sits down with neuroscientist and founder of Dr. Rewire, Dr. Alok Trivedi, for a powerful conversation on how the brain, beliefs, and nervous system truly shape success and fulfillment. Dr. Alok shares his origin story, the breakdown that sparked his breakthrough, and how decoding the “anatomy of belief” allowed him to rewire his life and business. Together, they explore why traditional mindset work often falls short, why the brain is wired for protection rather than happiness, and why integration, not hustle, is the real path to sustainable performance. The conversation dives into Dr. Alok's Four Brains framework, the dopamine-driven highs and lows of achievement, and how entrepreneurs can align with their true design to reduce burnout, anxiety, and self-sabotage. We are living in a moment where the language of self-care is everywhere. Protect your peace. Take a break. Treat yourself. But beneath the bubble baths and wellness rituals, something deeper is breaking down. People are absorbing quiet but powerful lies that they are useless, replaceable, or fundamentally unimportant. This week on Win Today, journalist and bestselling author Jennifer Breheny Wallace joins us to examine what she calls the modern crisis of "mattering." Drawing from extensive research and deeply human stories, Jennifer explains why the need to feel valued and to know that we add value is not optional—it is a core human need. When that need goes unmet, the consequences show up everywhere: fragile self-esteem, burnout, toxic achievement culture, and a constant search for validation that never quite satisfies. We explore why self-esteem alone cannot sustain a healthy identity, how success-driven cultures quietly erode a sense of worth, and why the hyper-visible world of social media often produces the opposite of real connection. Jennifer also introduces the concept of a "mattering core"—the conditions that help people know they are valued and capable of contributing value to others. When those elements are present, resilience grows. When they disappear, people begin to doubt their place in the world. If you've ever felt the pressure to prove your worth, if success has started to feel strangely empty, or if you've wondered why validation never seems to last, this conversation will help reframe what human flourishing actually requires. Guest Bio Jennifer Breheny Wallace is an acclaimed journalist and bestselling author whose work focuses on the intersection of mental health, achievement culture, and human flourishing. She is the author of Mattering: How to Create a Life of Meaning, Empathy, and Impact, a groundbreaking exploration of why the human need to feel valued and to add value is essential to well-being. Jennifer's writing has appeared in outlets including The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post, where she examines how modern pressures around success and validation shape the mental health of both adults and young people. Through her reporting and research, she helps readers understand how restoring a sense of mattering can strengthen resilience, deepen relationships, and restore purpose in an achievement-driven world. Visualising success feels productive. Vision boards, manifesting, picturing the finish line. It gives the sense that you’re moving closer to the goal. But according to the research, that mental shortcut might actually be working against you. In Part 2 of this two-parter (listen to Part 1 here), I continue my conversation with behavioural scientist and author Nir Eyal to unpack why. Nir spent six years researching how beliefs shape what we see, feel, and do, and why the stories we tell ourselves can dramatically change our behaviour. We talk about the surprising power of “failure goals”, why lucky people often manufacture their own luck, and how leaders shape behaviour through the invisible simulations they create at work. Nir also explains why framing matters more than many leaders realise, and why the way you interpret discomfort can completely change how you perform. And when it comes to visualisation, Nir shares a key insight from elite sport. High-performing athletes aren’t picturing themselves standing on the podium. They’re visualising the moment things get hard, and exactly what they’ll do next. Nir and I discuss: Why setting a failure goal can actually increase your chances of success The study that shows why some people experience themselves as “lucky” How beliefs shape what we see, feel, and do in everyday life Why leaders are effectively designing simulations through workplace culture The powerful role of framing when introducing ideas to teams The “believe, anticipate, feel, confirm” loop that shapes our experiences How expectations influence the way we experience products and brands Why visualising the finish line can reduce motivation What high-performing athletes actually visualise when preparing to succeed Key quotes “Failure without learning is a different story. But as long as you are failing and learning, that is progress.” “Athletes aren’t visualising the trophy. They’re visualising the obstacles in their way.” Connect with Nir Eyal on Instagram, X (Twitter), and LinkedIn and his website and check out his latest book Beyond Belief. Your Life Follows Your Focus (Part 2): Fix Your Eyes on Jesus In a world where everyone is competing for your attention, learning to focus may be one of the most important spiritual disciplines a disciple can develop. In this second episode in his Power of Focus series, Rob Skinner shares a powerful message from a recent sermon in Boston about why disciples of Jesus must intentionally direct their attention toward Christ. Philippians 2 calls believers to have the same mindset as Christ Jesus—a mindset marked by humility, sacrifice, and obedience. But the challenge is that the world constantly pulls our focus in other directions. Comparison. Success. Approval. Pleasure. Entertainment. Just like racehorses wear blinders to keep their eyes fixed on the track, disciples must decide where their attention will go. When racehorses look sideways, they slow down and lose the race. In the same way, when believers constantly compare themselves with others or chase distractions, they lose spiritual focus. The solution is simple but powerful: Fix your attention on Jesus. In this episode, Rob shares a practical spiritual habit called Christ-focused reading—spending intentional time in passages of Scripture that reveal the character and identity of Jesus. Passages like: • Philippians 2 – The humility of Christ • Colossians 1 – The supremacy of Christ • The Sermon on the Mount – The teachings of Christ By slowly reflecting on these passages and asking, "What does this reveal about Jesus?" disciples begin to absorb His character and imitate His example. Transformation doesn't happen by accident. It happens when we intentionally direct our attention toward Christ. Because in the end, your life truly follows your focus. Key Scriptures Philippians 2:5–11 "In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus…" Colossians 1:15–17 "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation…" Practical Challenge Try this simple practice this week: Spend time reading passages that focus directly on the character of Jesus. Slow down. Reflect on what the passage reveals about Him. Ask yourself: How can I imitate this today? Because discipleship is not about perfection. It's about direction and attention. While your core birth planets remain the same, your rising sign and house placements change, altering how those energies manifest in your daily life. In this episode, I explain why there is no "perfect" place for everyone—only the right place for your current intention. We discuss the mechanics of relocation charts, why vertical movement differs from horizontal movement, and how to use astrology as a support for your intuition rather than a replacement for it. Whether you are seeking spiritual growth, career success, or a hospitable place for a family, understanding your local chart helps you navigate potential obstacles and harness unique opportunities.QUOTES“When you move, you get a different birth chart. "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" — 2 Corinthians 5:17 In Part 2 of Jenny's conversation with Jason Butler, they recap and we pick up right where we left off—at the moment everything changed. After surrendering his life to Christ, Jason made a radical decision. He walked away from what the world would call success to pursue something far more valuable: a real relationship with Jesus. But as he shares in this episode, following Christ isn't just about a moment—it's about a daily choice. Jenny and Jason talk candidly about what it really means to follow Him in today's culture. What does it look like to radiate Jesus instead of blending in? What does discipleship actually cost? And how can one person's obedience change the trajectory of a family line? Jason's testimony is a reminder that surrender isn't loss—it's the beginning of true life. To learn more about Jason's ministry, podcast, counseling resources, and his book WILL JESUS KNOW YOU? "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" — 2 Corinthians 5:17 In today's episode, Jenny sits down with her friend Jason Butler for the first half of a powerful two-day conversation. Jason is a pastor, counselor, podcaster, and author—but before any of that, he was a highly successful businessman who appeared to have it all together. From the outside, his life looked impressive. Success, achievement, recognition. But behind closed doors, Jason was fighting private battles and wrestling with a deep emptiness he couldn't explain. No amount of accomplishment could quiet the longing in his heart for something more. In this episode, Jason opens up about what it was like to live as what he calls a "cultural Christian"—knowing about Jesus, but not truly knowing Him. He shares how the tension between outward success and inward brokenness eventually brought him to a moment of surrender that changed everything. This is an honest, hope-filled conversation about identity, striving, and the turning point that happens when Jesus becomes real. Be sure to come back for Part 2, where Jason shares what happened after that surrender—and how it impacted not only his life, but the generations that followed.

She highlights her journey of moving beyond achievement, sharing how embracing vulnerability, creativity, and leading with empathy has redefined what true success means, for herself, her teams, and those she mentors. In today's episode, we discuss: Reimagine your definition of success. Step back from titles and checkboxes. Ask yourself whether your work aligns with your core values and your true impact. When your work is a reflection of who you are, fulfillment finds you, not the other way around. Lead with empathy and inclusion. Performance isn't just about KPIs; it's about how people feel in your presence. When you foster empathy, inclusion, and psychological safety, you build teams that are resilient, innovative, and engaged at every level. Make becoming a lifelong pursuit. You don't have to have it all figured out. The most effective, impactful leaders are those who stay open to growth and keep redefining who they are—at work and in life. Protect your energy unapologetically. Learn to say "no"—and realize that it's a complete sentence. Being deliberate with your time and focus allows you to say "yes" to what truly matters and show up at your best. Give yourself permission to explore new interests. You finally have the thing you worked so hard for… so why does it feel scarier now than when you started? In this solo episode, Ash gets personal about what February taught her, from a soul-recharging trip to Costa Rica to a full business rebrand in motion, and lands on a truth that's been showing up over and over again with her clients: success doesn't always set us free. Sometimes it shrinks us.Because it's easier to be bold when you have nothing to lose. But what happens when you've built something real? When the stakes are higher and your nervous system starts treating your dream like a threat? This is the conversation around the Golden Cage, and why staying brave once you have something to lose might be the most important work of your next level.TOPICS WE EXPLORE:Why achievement can make high-achieving women play it safeThe Golden Cage concept — how success can quietly become a cageWhy your nervous system doesn't care that you're successfulHow identity attachment to your business invites you to shrinkThe difference between real risk and perceived ego threatWhy it's easier to dream when you have nothing to protectThe Upper Limit Problem and how self-sabotage shows up at your next levelWhy remembering to be a beginner is the key to staying boldHow loosening your grip on identity creates space to evolveAsh's personal February reflections — Costa Rica, big business shifts, and calling in braveryPOINT OF THE EPISODE:The higher you climb, the more your nervous system has to protect, and that's exactly when most women start playing smaller. The next level of success isn't just about building more. It's about staying brave, staying curious, and remembering that tenacious beginner energy that got you here in the first place.
