The DGSE, or Directorate General for External Security, is France's foreign intelligence service. It's found inside the Ministry of Defense but reports to the president. It was established under that name in 1982, learning the hard way, through a string of high-profile blunders, how to conduct espionage. The service is responsible for all sources of intelligence and has benefited from a popular TV show about its inner workings. As part of our Quilts as Monuments series we revisit the story of Gert McMullin and the AIDS Memorial Quilt, the gay rights movement in San Francisco, Harvey Milk, The White Night Riots and more.In 1985, Gert McMullin was one of the first San Franciscans to put a stitch on the AIDS Quilt, the quilt that began with one memorial square in honor of a man who had died of AIDS, and that now holds some 110,000 names. The quilt is made up of some 50,000 panels, each 3x6 feet, the size of a grave. It weighs 60 tons. End to end, it would stretch out more than 50 miles.Gert never planned it this way, but over the decades she has become the keeper of the quilt and has stewarded it, repaired it, tended it, traveled with it and conserved it for some 33 years now.In 2020, when COVID-19 hit, Gert was one of the first Bay Area citizens to begin sewing masks—PPE for nurses and health care workers who were lacking proper protection—masks she made from fabric left over from the AIDS Quilt. The comfort, outrage and honoring of an earlier pandemic being used to protect people from a new one.In January of 2020, the AIDS Memorial Quilt, now part of the National AIDS Memorial, returned home to the Bay Area after 16 years in Atlanta. It took six 52-foot semis to get it there. Sharon McMahon, America's government teacher, author of the number one New York Times bestseller The Small and the Mighty, and one of the most effective science communicators working right now, just on the government side joins us today. The bulk of our conversation is about something I see constantly in healthcare comments: learned helplessness, the feeling that the system is too broken and too big and too entrenched to ever get better. The movie Heavy Metal Parking Lot turns 40 this year — and feels weirdly contemporary. The basic setup is this: A couple of guys showed up at the parking lot of a Judas Priest show outside DC and just let cameras run as the tailgaters go wild. The difference: The cringe behavior didn't wind up on social media, but instead became part of an underground art film that slowly became a cult classic. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Pakistani Christian 13-year-old girl still captive to Muslim man On July 7, the European Parliament condemned Pakistan for its violation of human rights, citing a 13-year-old Christian Pakistani girl who is still fighting for her freedom from the 30-year-old Muslim man who abducted her, reports International Christian Concern. Maria Shahbaz was kidnapped in July 2025 by Shehryar Ahmad, who forced her to convert to Islam and married her against her will. Alliance Defending Freedom came alongside her parents in their fight to regain custody of their child in Pakistan's Federal Constitutional Court in February. Pakistani law states that a minor cannot legally consent to religious conversion or marriage, but shockingly the court ruled in favor of Ahmad when he presented a forged marriage certificate.  In Matthew 18:6, Jesus said, “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in Me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” Shahbaz's parents are not giving up. They are still appealing their daughter's case in court, hoping that justice will swiftly come.  According to Open Doors, Pakistan is the eighth worst country worldwide for the persecution of Christians. Send a polite, 3-sentence letter to Rizwan Sheikh, the Pakistan Ambassador to America, asking that he intervene.  The address is 3517 International Court NW, Washington, DC 20008. Two U.S. soldiers killed in Iranian attack on military base Two American soldiers were killed on July 17th in an Iranian attack on a U.S. military base in Jordan, reports the Western Journal. In a post on X, U.S. Central Command added, “Four American service members were medically evacuated to Jordanian hospitals. They have since been discharged.” Plus, one soldier is missing. Iran's attacks came after the U.S. launched its seventh consecutive night of air strikes on Iran. Iran makes chilling death threats against President Trump Iranian state media has published a shocking video entitled “Where to kill Trump?”, claiming to know the U.S. leader's motorcade route and the vulnerabilities within his security, reports The Express. The highly concerning footage claimed to reveal “information on the whereabouts of the terrorist president of America” while promising that “access to Trump is possible in these places.” It also alleges to give details about the motorcade that protects the U.S. president, which typically consists of 40 to 50 vehicles. It comes after repeated death threats have been made by Iran following the U.S. assassination of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.  President Trump's primetime speech on election integrity Last Thursday night, President Donald Trump addressed election security in a nationwide primetime address from the White House, pointing to ways American political leftists and China have compromised our elections, reports The Epoch Times. TRUMP: “You can't have a great country without free and fair elections. All we want is honesty in our elections. Great damage has been done to our country. Our elections were left vulnerable to being rigged and stolen, and the trust of the American people was lost. This cannot be allowed to continue. “Every American -- whether you're a Republican, Democrat, Independent, or otherwise -- should be able to agree that we deserve the most secure, honest, and fair election system anywhere in the world.” President Trump explained that China started compromising our elections in 2020. TRUMP: “Over a period of years, starting during the 2020 election cycle, the People's Republic of China carried out what is believed to be the largest compromise of election data in history, resulting in China's illicit acquisition of 220 million U.S. voter files. That information includes names, addresses, phone numbers, political party preferences, and other sensitive data that would be needed to register to vote. “This data loss presents an unprecedented election security nightmare. The intelligence even shows that China assigned a data exploitation unit specifically to this new project.” And finally, President Trump vowed action to hold people accountable. TRUMP: “The documents we will release, starting tonight, have been gathered by the White House Government Transparency Task Force, a great group of people, supported by our top intelligence agency chiefs, who have all personally reviewed the findings we are presenting this evening and fully confirmed their authenticity. “You can see these documents for yourself at whitehouse.gov. That's whitehouse.gov. Go check it out. Our purpose in disclosing this information is not to weaken confidence in election, but to earn that confidence by confronting vulnerabilities and correcting them very, very quickly, and that's what we're doing.” Homeland Security Secretary vows to prosecute illegal voters In related news, during a Friday press briefing, Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin promised to hunt down and prosecute illegal voters in the U.S., noting that 250,000 non-citizens are illegally registered to vote in just four states, reports The Christian Post. Speaking in the wake of President Donald Trump's 25-minute primetime address about election security on July 16th, Mullin outlined an aggressive plan to tighten voter roll integrity, harden election infrastructure, and hold election officials accountable for alleged failures. Senator Marsha Blackburn: No more birth tourism Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee has reintroduced legislation aimed at ending so-called “birth tourism” following the Supreme Court's recent 6-3 ruling in Trump v. Barbara. It held that children born in the United States to illegal aliens and foreign tourists remain entitled to birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment, reports Big League Politics. She said, “Congress must step up to the plate to protect the integrity of American citizenship.” The Ban Birth Tourism Act is co-sponsored by GOP Senators Ted Budd of North Carolina, John Cornyn of Texas, Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, Tim Sheehy of Montana, Jim Banks of Indiana, and Rick Scott of Florida. The legislation would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to explicitly prohibit foreign nationals from obtaining temporary visas for the purpose of giving birth in the United States. It would also classify birth tourism as a deportable offense, allowing immigration authorities to remove foreign nationals who enter the country for that purpose. Samaritan's Purse deployed disaster relief unit for Texas flood victims On July 17th, churches in the Texas Hill Country opened their doors as flood displacement shelters, taking in families whose homes and recreational vehicles had been swept away by rapidly rising rivers that killed at least two people, reports The Christian Post. Recently more than 30 inches of rain fell over several days, causing the Leona River and Guadalupe River to overflow. Floodwaters surged through the streets, destroying homes, and stranding people and vehicles. The Christian relief group Samaritan's Purse said it was deploying a disaster relief unit to the Hill Country, with staff and volunteer teams set to work in Uvalde County. The group said it was basing operations out of Uvalde Methodist Church, with volunteers beginning on Sunday to help residents remove waterlogged belongings and clear mud from their homes. CannCon and Zak Paine open with the Monday morning after President Trump's election speech, sifting through weekend meltdowns from DC insiders and giving credit where due to Senator Mark Warner for handing them a stack of instantly fact checked soundbites. From there they dig deep into a wild Michigan case involving a voter registration company caught fabricating thousands of applications for gift cards, complete with a compound stacked with illegally stored NFA firearms that had absolutely nothing to do with door to door canvassing. The numbers on the fraud rate alone are staggering. They also trace how that scandal connects back to the larger foreign interference threads from last week's speech. As always expect strong opinions, a little bit of good natured ribbing between the hosts, and a healthy dose of skepticism about how far any of this actually goes.

This week, we're looking back at the Supreme Court case that established the "common use" standard likely to play a major role in its new AR-15 case. That case is 1939's US v. Miller, and we have a guest with brand-new information that unsettles the official story of its namesake. Tulane law professor Brian Frye wrote the definitive account of Miller back in 2008, which ended up heavily influencing the Supreme Court's opinion in 2009's DC v. Heller. But, nearly 20 years later, he says the police and newspaper accounts about Jack Miller's life are now in dispute. Frye recounts the original narrative of the case, which reads like something out of a gangster movie. Miller was accused of being involved in multiple bank robberies, including a simultaneous heist at two Oklahoma banks. He then turned state's evidence and was later murdered by aggrieved gangsters. In between that time, he was arrested under the National Firearms Act (NFA) for transporting an unregistered sawed-off shotgun across state lines. An enterprising judge, who'd backed federal gun control as a congressman, then decided to use his prosecution as a test case for the NFA's constitutionality. In a truncated Supreme Court case that saw no oral arguments, that setup paid off with the High Court, in a fairly narrow ruling, determining that short-barreled shotguns aren't protected by the Second Amendment (or, at least, it didn't have evidence to say they are). It did, however, mention that the Second Amendment would protect guns that are in "common use." And that standard was something the 2009 Court grabbed onto in DC v. Heller, which is likely to play a substantial role in the 2026 Court's forthcoming AR-15 case. But the current understanding of Miller is deeply flawed, according to Frye. After his 2008 paper on the case garnered widespread attention, Frye said he heard from Jack Miller's surviving family members. And they had a very different version of what happened. Instead of being a committed career criminal, Miller's great-granddaughter said he was a persecuted minority living in the shadow of the infamous Tulsa Massacre, who was forced into at least some of the crimes he was involved with. He said he's currently working on a new paper that details the family's claims alongside other evidence, revealing a clearer picture of the story behind the Supreme Court case. Frye said that the local police singled out Miller for his Cherokee background and that they were involved in the bank robberies. He said corrupt police may even have been involved in his arrest for violating the NFA and in his eventual murder. He acknowledged that the family, like the police and papers from the period, has motivation to tell Miller's story a certain way. But he said he believed Miller's great-granddaughter is credible. Still, he noted they are still working on a final draft of the paper.Special Guest: Brian Frye.

The pit was activated and Eddie died from a lethal combination of heat, oxygen deprivation, and mechanical grinding.Eddie was formerly an operating tech and, in his new role, signed off on the maintenance documentation. He knew the paperwork or safety protections he knew was needed to enter the confined space.No one offered an explanation of why Eddie would have entered the pit.Junior Lattimore did not look into the pit before he turned it on. He had no reason to think anyone was in it.A search of Eddie's desk found evidence of falsified invoices for filters. The invoices were signed by Reese. He added a note to check with DC, interpreted as Dale Curtis.Tanya prepares the invoices for Reese's signature. She said he directed her to process the invoices for his approval, saying they were a rush job from a new vendor.Reese said he signs the invoices Tanya prepares, implying he did not scrutinize or even read the documents.A torn piece of bank statement found in the trash in the office Eddie and Tanya shared had a sizable balance but no nameCurtis later heard Eddie in his office talking to someone about stealing, but couldn't see who as the door was closed.Mercer recognized Steam Line #4 was tampered with. The line then failed catastrophically killing Dale Curtis. He was found with a pipe wrench in the vicinity.A drawing of the plant found in Eddie's apartment also highlighted Steam Line #4 as out of compliance on maintenance inspection.Lena and Mercer speculate the person or persons behind the “accidents” had to have an understanding of the plant to orchestrate both deaths.Tanya had knowledge and access to the invoice, but does not have knowledge of the plant. Tanya and Eddie shared an office and were friends. Eddie spent time with her son.Junior had knowledge of the rendering area, but did not have access to accounting. Junior lost out on the promotion to Eddie and was bitter.Junior had no apparent problem with Dale Curtis.Jackson had knowledge of the rendering area. Recently separated, he and Tanya were dating. He often when to her office, and even helped straighten Tanya's desk for her. He was there in the office when Eddie died.Reese claims his knowledge of the plant isn't detailed. Today on America in the MorningUS Soldiers Killed During Iran Attacks The U.S. military and Iran traded missile and drone strikes for a 9th straight night, with three U.S. service members killed and a fourth missing in the attacks, and concerns mounting of an all-out conflict.  John Stolnis has more from Washington.   Sanctions Against Canadian Wildfires While there was some relief for places like New York City and Washington, DC from unhealthy air due to the smoke from Canadian wildfires on Sunday, Washington State is now preparing for the combination of hotter weather and a smoky wildfire haze.  Lisa Dwyer reports that Canada is bristling at criticism from President Trump over their wildfire management, and Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno, speaking on Fox News, says he will introduce a bill to sanction Canada for the poor air quality.   Maine's Democrat Senate Candidate Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson appears to be the frontrunner for Democrats in the race to unseat Republican Senator Susan Collins in the midterms.  Correspondent Clayton Neville reports.   Tate Brothers Arrested Social media influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate were arrested in Miami and are being held on charges including rape.  Correspondent Julie Walker reports the brothers are also facing extradition to the UK where they also face rape charges.  Arizona Mass Shooting Gunfire erupted on the streets of Tucson, Arizona early Sunday morning.  Nine victims, all adults, were taken to area hospitals in critical condition with gunshot wounds to their extremities.   Vice President's Baby Boy Second Lady Usha Vance gave birth Sunday to her fourth child.  Vice President JD Vance made the announcement on X, saying in a statement - We are excited to announce our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance.    Reaction To Weekend Fighting The U-S attacked Iran over the weekend after Iranian attacks reportedly killed at least two U-S service members in Jordan and another in Iraq.  Correspondent Clayton Neville reports new waves of strikes by the US against Iran and Iranian attacks against US positions and nations in the region are fueling fears of the war escalating.   Wildfire Health Risks Health experts say the biggest concerns from Canadian wildfires is something that's much harder to see.  Correspondent Donna Warder reports risks to people include both short term and long term health problems.   Mamdani's Threat New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called Benjamin Netanyahu a “war criminal,” and openly spoke about arresting the Israeli Prime Minister if he comes to New York City.  Katie Clark reports that questions remain as to if Mamdani has the legal authority to act, while the Trump administration has already rebuked the idea.   Gulf Of America Threat There's a new concern along the Gulf Coast as a tropical depression has formed west of Tampa Bay.  FBI Out On DHS Investigations The FBI will no longer participate in investigations into cases involving alleged assaults on immigration agents.    Sports – Robert Workman   World Cup Finals & more.      Learn more about your ad choices.
