After World War II, Germany was destroyed…the country was divided…the east was under the control of the USSR…the west was in democratic Europe…and then there was berlin, sitting in the east but cut into different zones dominated by the Russians, the Americans, the British, and the French.  Most history books look at the political and military side of things…what we don't hear about nearly as much as how Germany society was rebuilt…imagine being a young person who is too young to have been in the military…what prospects did you have growing up in a divided country ruined by war.  This is where art comes in…art is always downstream from whatever is happening in society…and in the case of West Germany, many artists wanted things to be different.  Young German musicians had some very serious ideas of what needed to be done…many were into rock…but they were determined to create rock that was different from what was being made in the UK and America.  And they certainly didn't want anything resembling traditional German music…it had been tainted by the nazi legacy…it was time for something new, different, and away from the status quo.  There were experiments in the 50s that were pretty radical and, frankly, all over the place…but the results of these experiments began to coalesce into something by the end of the 60s.  Within a few years, something distinctly German had emerged…it rocked (in its own way)…it had elements of psychedelic music…things could either be extremely structured or open to wild improvisation…it certainly wasn't from any blues tradition or normal rock conventions upon which British or American rock was built.  The structures of some compositions weren't exactly what you could call normal—at least not in the context of rock…and occasionally, things got political, but not necessarily in a protest sense.  By the middle 70s, we had a new distinctly German sound…the scene was very diverse in terms of sonics, but there was a Teutonic purpose underlying everything.  The Germans just called it “German rock”…the British, however, gave it another name…it was supposed to be a joke, but the name stuck…and looking back, this sound, approach, aesthetic, and name can be found throughout many different corners of the rock.  This is an explanation of thing that has become known as a “Krautrock”…and believe me, you've heard it more than you realize. But most Western accounts offer a one-dimensional interpretation: the war was a noble crusade against fascism, creating a convenient parable about good and evil. But this depiction ignores a far messier reality. But what went through the minds of the actual heads of state that led their nations through the war? Did they fight according to our understanding, or did they want to defend their nations’ global empires and ancient legacy? A case can be argued that World War II was not a battle in which democracy triumphed over totalitarianism but rather a massive colonial war waged by rival empires. The war formally ended the era of British and Japanese colonialism but established in their places the highly militarized Soviet and American states, whose access to nuclear weapons threatened the possibility of annihilation. Come set sail and join us for a special tour of Honey Fitz, a presidential yacht. For almost a century, from 1880 to 1977, every president had access to a yacht. They were used as tools of diplomacy and hospitality, and quite often, as a means of escape and relaxation. Stewart McLaurin, president of the White House Historical Association, traveled to Jupiter, Florida to see one of these yachts which is now privately owned by businessman Charles Modica. Stewart speaks with Charles as well as Captains Gregory Albritton and Katelyn Kiefer, who oversaw the incredible restoration. First built in 1931 and named Lenore, the vessel was requisitioned for use during World War II and used for patrol duty by the U.S. Coast Guard. Then she was used by five presidents, from Harry S. Truman to Richard Nixon, and had a different name under each president. President Eisenhower named her Barbara Anne after his granddaughter, and President Kennedy christened the yacht in honor of his maternal grandfather, John Francis Fitzgerald, whose nickname, of course, was Honey Fitz. After being decommissioned and sold to a private owner in 1971, the yacht passed through several different hands and underwent modifications. Now, Honey Fitz has been lovingly brought back to life to resemble the time it was used by President Kennedy and his family. They were meticulous in replicating details, from cushions designed from sketches by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, to the bell on the bow of the boat. This was the first of three books Atkinson called the "Liberation Trilogy," a full history of the European theater of World War II, which is a total of 2,512 pages, including notes and indexes. Beginning in 2019, Rick Atkinson switched trilogies. This time, it's the history of the American Revolution. This week Seth and co-host Jon Parshall take a look at...yes you read that correctly. More on that later. Seth and Jon take a look at what some historians say is the beginning of World War II, the Marco Polo Bridge Incident. The team dives into the lead-up to the shots being fired and then what happens next. Both Japan and China, especially Chiang Kai Shek, push for war against one another and by the end of the summer of 1937, both nations HAVE to fight, springing what was already a touchy situation in China after the invasion of Manchuria in 1931 to an all-out war in 1937. The guys go into the political situation and then get into the weeds in the Battle of Shanghai. The fight for the famous city, Shanghai, would be the largest and deadliest urban combat fight in history until Stalingrad and would set the stage for the barbarity that would follow. Bill had to reluctantly step away from the show, for how long--no one knows-- and delivers a touching farewell message to all of us in the beginning of this episode. We will miss Bill, but Jon and I will keep the ship sailing and will always have a warm seat ready for our brother when he is able to return. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fancies himself as Israel's Winston Churchill, when in fact, the Gaza war has demonstrated he is exactly the opposite of Great Britain's storied leader, asserted Anshel Pfeffer, Israel correspondent for The Economist, former Haaretz analyst and a Netanyahu biographer, on the Haaretz Podcast. "We shouldn't be making this World War II – the Nazis against everybody else, and comparing that to Israel's war with Hamas. But that's being almost forced upon us by Netanyahu and his supporters," said Pfeffer in conversation with host Allison Kaplan Sommer. Pfeffer, who recently published a column in Haaretz about Netanyahu's repeated slogan of achieving "total victory" over Hamas and his misguided identification with Churchill in the second world war, said "Churchill was a brilliant wartime leader. He managed to bring the British together at that crucial point in history, uniting a country at a time of a terrible war. Yet, he didn't have the ability to win elections. Netanyahu is the opposite. As we've seen so clearly, he is totally useless at uniting Israel at a time of war, but he's very, very good at winning elections and clinging onto power." Pfeffer also pointed out that the "scorched earth" victory model that Netanyahu and his far-right coalition partners are pursuing in Gaza hews closer to former Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin and Russian President Vladimir Putin than Churchill and the other Western allies. Netanyahu should be reminded, Pfeffer said, that the U.K. and the U.S. were "magnanimous and benevolent" victors who poured millions into rebuilding a de-Nazified Germany. To remind us that civilizational alliances are not merely transactional, Robert Edsel tells personal World War II stories from the rural province of Limburg.  Before dawn on May 10, 1940, Hitler's forces invaded the Netherlands, shattering more than 100 years of peace. The Dutch lived through four-and-a-half years of occupation until September 1944, when American forces reached Limburg—the last portion of Europe west of Germany to be liberated by the Allies. Edsel follows 12 main characters over a six-year span, including Lieutenant Colonel Robert Cole, the first member of the 101st Airborne to receive the Medal of Honor; Sergeant Jeff Wiggins of the 960th Quartermaster Service Company, who escaped the poverty and racism of Alabama just to face more indignities; and Frieda van Schäik, a teenager who fell in love with an American soldier.  Drawing on letters, diaries, and other historical records, Edsel shows the painful price of freedom, capturing both the horrors of war and the transcendent power of gratitude by revealing the extraordinary measures the Dutch have taken to thank their liberators. [3:29] Chris Maguire started in a Big Four firm in the '90s, in the auto practice. It was a great way to learn business and how they worked, focusing on understanding financial controls and risk, and how to make sure that companies were behaving correctly. [3:59] After an MBA, Chris started working for Thomson Reuters. He has been with them for about 20 years in the legal tech space. He started on the strategy side and transitioned after several years to driving the commercial teams in the risk business. [4:24] Now, Chris has the role of looking at product and industry strategy for corporations. Thomson Reuters is at the intersection of legal, risk, and compliance, and how they affect enterprises. [5:07] Chris says that 20 years ago, AI was not a fast-moving industry. There have been dramatic changes in the last few years. AI adoption by Thomson Reuters customers has doubled in the last year. Generative AI has been seen in a wide range of tasks. It started with drafting NDAs. [5:38] Salespeople are always asking for NDAs and how they can be drafted more quickly and easily. Now AI conducts legal research or helps draft a research memo or a complaint from a particular point of view. We're seeing it in drafting HR employment policies and rote tasks. [6:21] Chris explains the use of AI prompts tied to data sources, such as your data, data from Thomson Reuters, or other data providers. Chris is also seeing big data AI used a lot in analyzing outside spending and looking for cost savings. [7:14] Chris tells how AI helps in decision-making, using the example of knowing the vendors you choose for your supply chain and knowing your customers. AI can weed through all the news out there to make sure you're not dealing with a sanctioned entity. [8:22] AI can help with reputation risk. Is there forced labor in your supply chain? That matters to your reputation. It's not just whether a country is sanctioned, but what the individual entities in your supply chain are doing. There's a lot of focus on reputation today. [9:10] Justin recently had the Chief Impact Officer of EcoVadis on RIMScast Episode 329. They talked about forced labor and human trafficking in the supply chain. Use AI to help identify where forced labor and human trafficking are big risks, avoid them, and report them. [9:35] This is important on the corporate side and the government side of the business. Chris says it will be interesting to see the effect of tariffs. Thomson Reuters has updated about 50 million changes to its global trade products so far this year, compared to 100 million in 2024. [11:54] Back to the Conclusion of my Interview with Chris Maguire of Thomson Reuters!  [12:27] Chris refers to RIMScast Episode 335 with Jeff from Academy Sports. Jeff talked about how the Compliance function now sits in the General Counsel's office. At Thomson Reuters, more of the Compliance group has moved into the General Counsel's office in the last year. [12:48] The General Counsels are being charged with understanding the full weight of risk across an organization, from reputational risk to who you should or should not do business with. [13:16] The Sales organization at Thomson Reuters has discussed that a lot with the GC office, from a reputation, sanctions, and everything perspective. A lot of GC offices now include the Compliance role. [13:50] Chris's ERM philosophy is Trust. Companies need to trust who they are doing business with. Companies need to trust that their employees have what they need to make decisions not to deal with a risky customer, but to follow the laws and rules of global companies. It's trust. [14:29] There is so much change going on. Chris talks about values that resonate. One Thomson Reuters value is Act Fast, Learn Fast. You have to move and learn. Companies can help you, but it is on individuals to take the responsibility to act fast and learn fast about what is changing. [14:59] Thomson Reuters is bound by the Trust Principles. It started with Reuters in the 1940s around WWII, but it goes back to its 150 years of legal content. [15:17] The information Thomson Reuters provides its customers has to be free from bias. It has to be right. It has to be updated. It can't be an opinion about a philosophy. It has to be fact-based. It has to provide customers with the information they need to get work done. [15:36] Applying AI on top of trusted, unbiased, correct, up-to-date information is going to be vital, moving forward. Act fast, learn fast, and trust. [15:57] Chris believes the legal industry hasn't always been the fastest-moving industry. The technology is now there to allow us to move more quickly and learn more quickly. That's an exciting thing! [16:23] Chris says AI is no longer a future concept. It's here. It's transforming our lives; it's starting to transform our business environment. If you don't adapt quickly, you're going to be at a significant disadvantage. [16:36] For people in General Counsel's offices, people in compliance functions, the value is your expertise, your knowledge, and you as a human, and what you can bring to the situation. [16:48] If AI can help you get there, and give you a platform on which to add your judgment and expertise, knowledge, and professional opinion, that's a hugely valuable thing. [17:01] Thomson Reuters doesn't see AI taking away jobs. We see people who use AI, potentially taking away the jobs of people who don't use AI. It all comes back to the humans and how they use it. Robert F McLean was just 19 years old when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy to do his part in WWII. Invited to join the Navy Seals, he declined and enrolled in the U.S.N. Patrol Torpedo Boat School in Melville, R.I. Upon graduation Bob was assigned to Squadron 30, destined for the European Theatre of Operations. Shortly after midnight on June 6, 1944, his squadron became the outermost fighter convoy of the Normandy Invasion. The largest force ever assembled included his Patrol Torpedo Boat 461, a fighter escort. Bob valiantly participated in the fall of Le Havre, France and received a Bronze Star. He also was awarded a Presidential Citation for his squadron's heroic rescue work in the English Channel during the Battle of the Bulge.   May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and since 1999, Congressman David Wu (OR) and the co-chairs of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus have supported the celebration of Taiwanese American Heritage Week starting from Mother's Day Weekend, so we thought this would be a good time to reshare one of our most popular episodes, an interview we did with Dr. Jerome Keating in 2020 about the history of Taiwan. There is an angle on Kanye West that appears as a pot of gold that remains untouched. Before Kanye's new "HH" song, which is indeed ripe for picking, and prior to his supposed glorification of Nazis or Hitler, he was pushing an adult film company, following an album titled "Jesus is King," itself in contrast with his earlier works. Is this the evolution of art, or just the genius of tapping into different markets? You don't have to look far to find something similar happening with Russel Brand who said he's "lit up with the Holy Spirit" after making bail in his rape and assault trial, or with the general "Christ is King" meme on social media. It's not that a person cannot or should not embrace a new faith, but that sometimes these conversions are suspicious. In Kanye's previous work, like his 2013 album "Yeezus," he performs a song called "I am God," and he has repeatedly referred to himself as a genius, or likened himself to Jesus or God in the past. The nickname "Yeezus" is derived from Jesus and "Yeezy," inspired by Jay Z, a man who has taken on the name J-Hov for Jehovah, and a man who alongside Sean "Diddy" Combs has been accused of rape too. Yeezus is also sometimes considered a slang term for the anti-christ. In simple terms, Kanye evolved from ego-maniac man, to Jesus and God, to porn, and now to Hitler. We know when one of these major transitions occurred: back in 2016 he addressed his audience after suddenly stopping a concert, stating: “Google lied to you. Facebook lied to you. Radio lied to you.” He targeted the head of Facebook, Obama, and even Jay-Z. Almost instantly, his tour was canceled and he was hospitalized for a psychiatric emergency at UCLA. Interestingly, UCLA was also home to Dr Jolyon West's infamous psychiatric experiments for the CIA, which focused on split personalities - a common theme in the music industry. Kanye then emerged soon after with blonde hair looking like he was drugged or had a lobotomy. He then died his hair again soon after, this time yellow and pink. Those who have read "Strange Scenes Inside the Canyon" will be familiar with how artists and even social movements are often started by, or heavily influenced by, the military and intelligence community. This is true from music to UFOs, something Kanye tapped into in 2011 with Katy Perry and a song called ET. She sings: "you're from a whole 'nother world, a different dimension." The theme of music artists being associated with aliens is also a very common motif, something that again relates to their non-human, or god-like talents. Whether Kanye is under such implied influence, breaking such influence based on his behaviors, or is truly a genius, or something else, the fact remains that "HH" is in an entirely different category objectively. Besides a catchy hook and beat, the song isn't very impressive. But perhaps the music had its intended purpose already, considering how many platforms banned it almost immediately. Not because of the "n-word" but because of the "h-word." Note, many of those doing the banning are the same ones that allow for or promote degeneracy, pornography, digital prostitution, slavery, suicide, drugs, mental diseases, and the like. But Hitler is off limits apparently, no matter the context. And whatever their reasoning, the public has an even more extreme reaction. There are generally three kinds of people who like "HH"... people tired of censorship, people who genuinely love him for one reason or another, and people who think it's funny. To put it simply, Kanye was banned this time not for porn or even Jesus, but because he said "Hitler," something that is comical because he's as much a Nazi as he is or was a true Christian. Does anyone find it strange that this controversy seems to likewise overshadow the Diddy trial, who has essentially been protected by the media like Epstein? Kanye is bad for saying "Hitler" but Epstein, Diddy and Jay-Z are the good guys.The public glorification of Hitler or Nazis, like the constant use of such accusations for every political issue, is part of an historical straw man that has persisted since WWII. We don't even define what these terms mean, like how "nazi," or national socialist, technically has nothing to do race or Jews (ask Bernie Sanders, a national socialist), or how Hitler was by no metric the most evil man of the 20th-century. And Joe Rogan is right about how "HH" was banned, that such actions essentially prove Kanye's statements about a cabal of powerful David Stars controlling the music industry and image of the black man. Without warning, it descended, brushing against a house on Bellevue Avenue before gliding onward like a lost soul, finally becoming ensnared in a web of power lines. Propellers bent like soft wire. Gasoline spilled into the streets. Residents ran toward the chaos, drawn by curiosity, fear, or both. John Kinder is the director of American studies and a professor of history at Oklahoma State University. And he is an author. Recently, my brother Scott acquired our dad’s military service records from World War II. As I studied the pages, there was nothing startling or shocking—nothing about who Dad was. There were mere facts. Data. It was interesting to read but ultimately dissatisfying because I didn’t come away feeling like I learned anything new about Dad. Thankfully, in giving us a record of the life and work of Jesus, the four gospels are much more than just data. They are descriptions that reveal who Jesus was in His time on this earth as well as what He did and said. In Mark’s gospel, that record was for the purpose of proving Mark’s thesis statement: “The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God” (1:1). Immediately, Mark tells us how John the Baptist testified about this Messiah. John said, “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie” (v. 7). Mark’s account makes it clear that Jesus is the Son of God. As John the disciple added in his own account of Jesus’ life, “These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31). The evidence of Jesus’ life is abundant. These questions remain: what does He mean to you? How has He changed your life?
