Timothy Keller Sermons Podcast by Gospel in Life

When people in the West were faced with the atrocities of World War II, the culture's prevailing optimistic views of human nature were devastated. Two questions kept coming up: what's wrong with us that we're capable of this, and what are we going to do about it?  Isaiah 52 to 53 was written to answer those same two questions. It was written to a nation facing exile, to people who were about to face captivity, atrocities, and prison. And it has maybe the most well-known answer in the Bible to the question about human evil: God is sending somebody, the servant of the Lord. In this passage, we learn 1) who he is, 2) why he came, and 3) what he did. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on February 28, 1999. Series: What's Really Wrong with the World. Scripture: Isaiah 52:13-53:12. Today's podcast is brought to you by Gospel in Life, the site for all sermons, books, study guides and resources from Timothy Keller and Redeemer Presbyterian Church. Chit Chat Wednesday brings on Daniel Koh, a friend and policy pro running for Congress in MA-6, to cut through DC fog with plain talk about how the House works, why algorithms reward outrage, and how good government looks from the White House down to a town liquor license. He argues results beat rhetoric, explaining how barriers kick people off Medicaid, why neighbors and clergy helped Boston cut homicides, and how DC's status games and two-minute TV hits make politicians worse at actual service. Jared pushes on slogans, civility, and the comedy-politics attention trap, while Daniel defends debating with facts instead of haymakers and says local responsiveness should follow you to Congress. They field a dating question about “moderates,” urging specifics over labels and partnership values that show up in real life. Then it's King of the World: make trains reliably on time and fix those bathroom doors, explore heated roads and smarter lights, structure debates around substance, and upgrade broadband while keeping kids' smartphones out of school. Today, we're sharing a conversation that feels especially urgent. In fact, we'd planned to release this episode later in the month—but this week, as a major hurricane moves through the Caribbean and the U.S. government shutdown is causing massively disruptive ripples in the daily life of countless families, we know so many are asking, What can I do? We hope this conversation offers real practical guidance  and clarity for getting to work today. We're joined by Sharon Eubank, author of the new book Doing Small Things with Great Love: How Everyday Humanitarians Are Changing the World.Sharon has spent decades in humanitarian work around the globe, and now works as the director of Latter-day Saint Charities. In this conversation, she shares what her experience has taught her about ethical, lasting, and impactful relief. We were struck by this term, “the second disaster." Sharon explains how, all too often, well-meaning aid can actually become a second disaster—doing more harm, complicating and even obstructing urgent relief efforts. But she offers some surprisingly simple and practical ways to ensure that what we give and how we serve is genuinely helpful. As our hearts turn to the Caribbean, this feels especially important—but the principles Sharon shares are just as vital at home. She explains why she believes we're most effective where we live, how relationships and trusted networks form the foundation of lasting change, and why honoring agency and dignity is essential to any effort—whether local or global.Sharon shared so many incredible insights—things that energized us to be helpers, and that empowered us to get started. We hope that in this time of deep need, fear, and urgency, that this episode will help you to recognize where you feel called, and help you know what to do first. Resources to use to find reputable organizations to support: https://www.charitynavigator.orghttps://www.charitywatch.org/our-charity-rating-processhttps://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/charity-commissionOrder That We Might Have Joy anywhere books are sold! A surprisingly huge game will be played in Austin Saturday as the Texas Longhorns host the Vanderbilt Commodores. Texas Football must win to stay alive in the Playoffs race, Vanderbilt Football may still be able to absorb a loss but a win positions them well down the stretch. The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party has the Georgia Bulldogs trying to stay alive in the Playoff hunt facing an interim coach for the Florida Gators. Georgia Football still only has the Alabama loss on their resume. Florida Football looks to rally behind their interim coach. Why should Georgia worry about the Cocktail Party? Speaking of Playoff implications, The Oklahoma Sooners and Tennessee Volunteers meet in Knoxville in a must win game for the two. Living Myth
Episode 459 - The War on Empathy and Vertical Imagination in the Soul

    Living Myth

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 29, 2025 26:51

This episode begins by examining the rise of "vertical morality" that appears in both Christian communities and conservative politics and has given rise to a "war on empathy." Whereas Jesus famously preached love, mercy and care for the oppressed, vertical morality measures righteousness, not by goodness to others, but rather by something more simplistic and more divisive. Vertical morality declares that human behaviors are right or wrong based upon what the higher power says. As proponents put it: "Our ethics and behaviors have a duty to please God alone. We must obey by furthering the will of God, no matter the cost to other people." In a religious context, the higher power is God, in politics, it can become an authoritarian leader. As this viewpoint desensitizes people, true believers can justify demonizing all immigrants as criminals, defaming gay and trans people as predators, and condemning political opponents as, not just wrong, but evil. In direct contrast to vertical morality, Michael Meade proposes vertical imagination as a mostly lost quality of the human soul that would reconnect us to the heights of inspiration, but also keep us connected to the depths of genuine feeling. For the issue is not simply making a steady ascent on the ladder of morality. Rather, the point is for the soul to fully awaken to the process of ascent and descent that keeps Heaven and Earth connected, while it also connects us to the suffering souls of other people and to the all-embracing Soul of the World. When oriented from the deep sense of self and soul within us, our choices can become truly meaningful and our experiences genuinely unifying, rather than be divisive and traumatizing. In extraordinary times the soul expects to find extraordinary and enlivening experiences, not some final salvation based upon the ladders of morality, but rather many little redemptions found in moments when Heaven and Earth, the eternal and the time bound meet in the wisdom of our waking souls and merciful hearts. Is technology the source or salve of social isolation? Given the realities of increasing division, the epidemic of loneliness, and unwanted isolation today, how should we think about the theological, ethical, and spiritual dimensions of the human experience of aloneness?“AI technologies aren't capable of creating conditions in which grace can happen—it's endemic to personhood.”This episode is part 3 of a 5-part series, SOLO, which explores the theological, moral, and psychological dimensions of loneliness, solitude, and being alone. In this episode, sociologist Felicia Wu Song joins Macie Bridge to discuss the sociology of solitude, loneliness, and isolation, framed by today's most pressing technological challenges.Drawing from her work on digital culture and AI, Song distinguishes between isolation, loneliness, and generative solitude—what she calls “positive aloneness.” She explores how technology both connects and disconnects us, what's lost when care becomes automated, and why the human face-to-face encounter remains vital for grace and dignity. Together they consider the allure of AI companionship, the “better-than-nothing” argument, and the church's local, embodied role in a digitized age. Song invites listeners to rediscover curiosity, self-reflection, and the spiritual discipline of solitude as essential practices for recovering our humanity amid the noise of the crowd.Helpful Links and ResourcesFelicia Wu Song, Restless Devices: Recovering Personhood, Presence, and Place in the Digital Age — https://www.ivpress.com/restless-devicesAllison Pugh, The Last Human Job: The Work of Connecting in a Disconnected World — https://press.princeton.edu/books/hardcover/9780691240817/the-last-human-jobDavid Whyte, “Solace: The Art of Asking the Beautiful Question” — https://www.amazon.com/Solace-Art-Asking-Beautiful-Question/dp/1932887377Sherry Turkle, Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other — https://www.sherryturkle.com/alone-togetherEpisode Highlights“Even though I study technology, I'm really interested in what it means to be human.”“What happens when we have technologies that always bring the crowd? Feeling lonely is very human. She is author of Restless Devices: Recovering Personhood, Presence, and Place in the Digital Age. What is an eco-civilisation? What are its values and what are the frames within which it works? Why do we need it in the first place and what will the Establishment do to maintain business as usual? Most importantly, what can each of us do to live an eco-civilisation into being? This week's guest, Jeremy Lent, explores these ideas in depth in his forthcoming book, Ecocivlization: Making a World that Works, which is due out in May of 2026.  We've talked to Jeremy twice before, first in episode #38 about his award-winning book, The Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity's Search for Meaning, and then in #102 about his second book in the series, The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe. Ecocivlisation is the third book in this trifecta and I was privileged to read the pre-proof draft, so I can tell you that it's one of the few genuinely Thrutopian books I've read. It that lays out the iniquities and downright horror of the imperial/colonial system of the Trauma culture - termed Wendigo Inc. in the book - and then brings Jeremy's trademark meticulous research and fluent prose to bear on the ways through to a system in which we all live and thrive and work towards the wellbeing of the entire ecosphere.   Given that there is such detail, I wanted to talk to Jeremy now, so that we could explore some of the foundations - the nature of the existing narratives of Business as Usual, of TINA: There is No Alternative  - and why this is so ubiquitous in spite of being self-evidently untrue.  Then I wanted to look at the broader frame of the Theory of Change proposed here so that next spring we can go into more detail ahead of the book's publication. For those of you who don't yet know him, Jeremy was born in London, has a BA in English Literature from Cambridge University, an MBA from the University of Chicago, and was a former internet company CEO. Jim Keller has lived more than one musical life. He first made his mark as a guitarist and co-writer in Tommy Tutone — yes, the band behind “867-5309/Jenny.” But that was just the beginning. After years on the road, Jim shifted gears and built a remarkable career behind the scenes, managing artists like Philip Glass and helping shape the business side of some of modern music's most distinctive voices. Now, he's returned to his own songwriting roots with End of the World — an album that blends grit, humor, and heart in equal measure. In this episode, Jim talks about what it's like to reinvent yourself in the music world, how his time with Glass changed the way he thinks about creativity, and the stories behind his new record. Listen in for a conversation that spans decades — from the neon glow of early ‘80s pop to the quiet persistence of an artist still chasing great songs. Enjoying the show? When you hear the word 'surrender' what comes to mind? Most people associate surrender with losing… but what if surrendering is exactly what you need to do to experience miracles? In this episode, I share how Surrender is an ancient practice on the spiritual path, one that can lead to healing, abundance, and miracles. I also share my insight about Mother Mary's seven 'surrender mysteries' and how they correlate to the seven chakras for deep healing. How do you feel about letting go? Have you ever let go and experienced a miracle? PS – if you want to experience the 7 Part Healing Path of Surrender series that begins Nov 5th in the Magnify Your Miracles membership, click here to join. Key Learnings: 1) Surrender is the opposite of what we are taught to do. The idea of letting go seems counterintuitive in a culture that continues to push, push, push! But what if holding on and trying to force things to happen is blocking your manifestation? 2) Surrender is a natural part of the cycle of nature. Every Autumn the trees release their leaves, and the natural world prepares for Winter, letting go of every unnecessary thing in the process. Every night you enter the great surrender of sleep where deep healing happens. What if you did this consciously and not just during sleep? 3) The seven sorrows rosary corresponds to the seven chakras. It is also similar to the story of the descent of Innana who must discard something at each level as she descends to the underworld. We will follow this healing path of Mother Mary's, beginning at the crown chakra and the first surrender mystery, releasing any energy that is holding you back from experiencing a deeper connection with the Divine. "Surrender is the key that unlocks miracles." Song: We Shall Be Known Music by: Karisha Longaker of MaMuse   Notes: I could not be more delighted than to bring you this beloved song in a real-life song-sharing situation. My Flow Singing folk were singing "We Shall Be Known" for the third week -- so we simply recorded! You'll sing with them as they review the main melody, learn the upper harmony for the first time -- and then I inserted a quick teach of the low harmony -- and then we get to sing "in the room" with the Flow Singers, who were leaning into the song in such a beautiful way. I feel so lucky with the company I get to keep... and next week, I find myself in a Zoom room with Karisha Longaker and Sorah Nutting themselves, talking about the "insanely fun, incredibly connected" first years, and what it means in practical terms to "believe in kindness as our common wealth."    Songwriter Info: MaMuse (“Ma” as in Mamma; “Muse” as in the one who inspires) was born out of a collaboration between songwriters Karisha Longaker and Sorah Nutting. 2008 was a year of great alchemy. Fires erupted in Northern California, a great wind of inspiration blew through, catalyzing a series of songs written from the soil and rivers, ash and heat of Chico where these two musicians met. In the early days these troubadours toted instruments around town by bicycle and shared their songs at farmers markets, community gatherings, small cafes and festivals. Not too long after, these two voices became iconic to the Chico community, representing idyllic values of friendship, community, love for nature and care for Self and World. The love spread, sisterhood held strong through two decades of LIFE: children, relationships arriving and dissolving, making home in many new places.  MaMuse songs such as “We Shall Be Known” and “Hallelujah” have sprouted wings and are now sung at the bed sides of birthing mothers, round campfires, at weddings and funerals... All places where people are gathered to celebrate and to mourn. These are songs born of the Folk lineage; songs for all of us.   Sharing Info: The song is free to share but Karisha and Sorah always welcome financial and/or networking support if/when folks are so moved.   Song Learning Time Stamps: Melody: 00:04:20 High harmony: 00:07:16 Low harmony: 00:11:34 Whole song: 00:15:05   Links: Show info, bookings and newsletter signup: www.mamuse.org Instagram: www.instagram.com/mamusemusic  Patreon: www.patreon.com/mamuse Download and contribute to recorded music funds: mamuse.bandcamp.com  Lisa Littlebird's page for We Shall Be Known: thebirdsings.com/we-shall-be-known/   Nuts & Bolts: 2:2, major, 3-part harmony   Join this community of people who love to use song to help navigate life? "  Think of it as a wild Midwestern version of the MIT mystery hunt  for a slightly different crowd where people drink quite a bit more." For three whole days, over 10,000 trivia challengers descend on the tiny town of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, for The World's Largest Trivia Contest. The contest runs on the local college radio station at the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point for 54 hours straight, asking eight questions per hour. Teams have only the length of two radio songs to call in their answer. Yup, that's right. You call into the radio, old school style. It's a madcap frenzy of teams frantically searching through bins of catalogued items spanning from cereal boxes to DVD covers, or racking their brains to remember an obscure cartoon reference. For 43 years Jim “Oz” Oliva was ringmaster of this trivia circus. He wrote most of the questions and organized the contest. Jim revels in finding the most obscure bits of trivia to throw at his players. In response, teams have amassed entire rooms filled with snack packaging, atlases, and the booklets from CDs, among other items. With the advent of the internet, Jim had to change how he formatted the questions to stay ahead of searchable keywords. You can hear the glee in Jim's voice when he talks about all the techniques he devised to outmaneuver trivia players. He even had to hold onto all of the garbage from the question writing room otherwise players have been known to go through the trash, attempting to gain an edge over the competition. Jim is blunt, funny, and mischievous. I really enjoyed hearing all his stories from his many years of running this crazy trivia contest and learning about the wild culture surrounding it. In our Bonus Aftershow, REA contributers Heather Burns and Theresa Piazza join us to share their perspective on the trivia contest. Heather has been involved in the trivia contest for over 20 years, and Theresa joined Heather for the first time last year. It was wild to hear all about how they prepare for three crazy days of trivia with a revolving door of team members marshalling to rifle through bins of material and sleeping in shifts. I hope you enjoy this episode about The World's Largest Trivia Contest.     Episode Sponsors We are immensely grateful to our sponsors this season: REA Patreon Backers, PG's Playhouse, Buzzshot, and COGS. The ending, it seems, of the Chris Jericho/X-Pac feud, with the match taking place inside the confines of a steel cage. We talk about how Eddie Guerrero has gone full heel, taking a shower with the ho's and how he is now adjacent to the RTC due to their hatred of Chyna and her Playboy issue.  The (kind of) in-ring return of Stone Cold Steve Austin as he takes out his frustrations on Rikishi and attempts to kill him, before police intervene. A little levity with Naked Mideon taking on William Regal for the European title.  The saga of the Los Conquistadors winning Tag Team gold…2 nights in a row!?! Kurt Angle capping his first year in the WWF with a World title win. We look at clips of the next few Raws, including Ivory joining the RTC, Edge Christian and Kurt Angle celebrating Edge's birthday and Rikishi confessing that the Rock was the mastermind behind hitting Steve Austin. What's up, dudes? They're a legendary metal band whose songs were played all the time on MTV. Yes, we're talking Stryper! I've got the incredible Michael Sweet with me to talk about their 1984 singles “Reason for the Season” and “Winter Wonderland!” We also dive into their new album The Greatest Gift of All available this year in November. The boys lay down an eighth note riff in “Reason for the Season,” and modulate for the chorus. The song is full of their dual lead guitar, harmonized in 3rds for texture and interest. After coming to a rocked out climax, it ends with harmonics and acoustic and clean tone electrics. The tight vocal pads give an ethereal feeling contrasting with the previous heavy straightforward rock vibe.Released in December ‘84, the single had a Stryperized version of the classic “Winter Wonderland” as a B-side. This time the band gave the song a swing eighth-triplet riff. After some introductory dialogue, they launch into it, and segue nicely into a triplet dual lead solo. Uniquely, a turnaround transitions to an Elvis inspired bluesy half time rendition of the chorus. And now, this year the band has a new Christmas album! Stryper The Greatest Gift of All is full of classics and original tunes. From a lush and calming “Silent Night” to an uptempo “Joy to the World,” it has it all. The album even ends with re-recordings of their two ‘80s singles, updating them sonically and ending with a bang!Guitar? Check. Soaring vocals? Yep. Full on Stryper vibes? Definitely! The technological advances, starting with the internet, then the cell phone, and now AI, have presented parents and children with a significant dilemma, one that will require some difficult choices to combat the negative consequences of our extraordinary advancements.  Digital technology has been proven to be addictive; screening distracts people from their emotions and addressing their needs for connecting relationally. Ready to order coffee without pointing, find the station without panic, and ask for help without freezing? We sat down with language coach David Durham to build a traveler's toolkit of Spanish you'll actually use in real life—from warm greetings to confident check requests, from essential directions to emergency phrases that keep you safe.We start with the why: Spanish connects you across Mexico, Central and South America, Spain, and large parts of the United States. David explains the smartest starting point for most listeners—Latin American Spanish—then unpacks the charming differences you'll hear in Spain, like gracias vs grathias, so you understand what's going on without getting lost in rules. You'll learn how gender shapes adjectives and articles, when to use tú vs usted, and how a single switch from yo quiero to quisiera transforms an order into a kind request that earns better service and more smiles. From there, we move fast through practical scripts. Introduce yourself with me llamo, keep conversations smooth with lo siento and no entiendo, and navigate confidently with ¿Dónde está…? for the station, market, bank, pharmacy, airport, and, yes, the all-important baño. We cover everyday ordering—un café con leche, agua con gas, helado, pan—plus numbers and time so you can read prices, bargain fairly, and show up on time. Safety gets space too: ayuda and llame a la policía give you clear words when you need them most. Along the way, David shares cultural tips that turn phrases into bridges, reminding us that respect and a simple por favor go a long way.If you want to go deeper, David's World to the Wise platform offers video-based French and Spanish courses and curated cultural tours.
