Here's a 300-word iTunes/Podcast Apps summary for Episode 562: What happens when your carefully planned vacation in France takes an unexpected turn? In Unexpected France: History, Nature, and a Bit of Chaos, host Annie Sargent talks with traveler Gregg Furey about a journey filled with breathtaking discoveries, surprising challenges, and a few classic French travel mishaps. Listen to this episode ad-free Gregg's trip took him to places most visitors overlook. He explored the prehistoric caves of Arcy-sur-Cure, where ancient paintings connect today's traveler with humanity's earliest stories. He visited the soaring cathedrals of Laon and Bourges, each one a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. At the battlefield of Alésia, Gregg learned how Julius Caesar defeated Vercingetorix and how that moment still shapes French identity. And in Colombey-les-Deux-Églises, he reflected on the life of General Charles de Gaulle at the Croix de Lorraine memorial and museum. But not everything went according to plan. Gregg ended up in a hospital in Sarlat after unexpected health issues. Instead of panic, he found efficient doctors, affordable treatment, and an eye-opening look at how the French healthcare system really works. This detour disrupted his schedule but turned into one of the most memorable parts of the trip. This conversation is about more than just sightseeing. It's about handling the unpredictable. It's about staying flexible, finding humor when things go wrong, and discovering that mishaps often make the best stories. Annie and Gregg remind us that France is more than Paris and the Riviera. Smaller towns, Roman ruins, and quiet villages hold just as much magic. Subscribe to the Join Us in France Travel Podcast to hear more stories like this one. Emulation is a polarizing subject in video games. While I personally feel its not a bad thing there are people who only associate with piracy. So I figured who better to talk about this topic than the founder of one of the earliest emulation websites, Zophar. Zophar founded Zophar's domain back in 1996 as a way to aggregate emulation information and it grew into something much more than that. Zophar and I chatted about how he started Zophar's domain, why he left, his feelings on emulation and much more! Your instincts aren't just whispers. They're a compass pointing you toward the life you're meant to live. But in a world obsessed with speed, metrics, and outcomes, most of us forget how to listen.Arthur Brooks, bestselling author and Harvard Business School professor, teaches one of the most popular classes on happiness. But his insights come not just from research, but from a life of reinvention: from French horn player to scholar, from think-tank leader to teacher, and even pilgrim on the Camino de Santiago. In this conversation, we explore why so many of us feel unhappy today, the real equation for joy, and why following your gut is essential. Along the way, Arthur shares how to treat life like a pilgrimage, why AI may strip away the struggle that makes us wise, and why the process - not the outcome - is where happiness lives. If you've ever wondered whether you're “falling behind,” or if you're searching for the courage to trust your instincts, this episode will remind you that happiness isn't something you chase - it's something you practice, every step of the way. This is…A Bit of Optimism.Check out more of Arthur's work here: https://www.arthurbrooks.com/
There's been a lot of build up to G's final race and, well, he nearly missed it. A plane mechanical and a thunder storm conspired to stop him travelling to Suffolk until 1am last night, but he got there. Thank the lord for that. We'd have had to rip up some big old Watts Occurring plans. Anyway, he rolled out from Woodbridge this morning resplendent in his new INEOS jersey aboard his stunning special edition Pinarello DOGMA F and the Lloyds Tour of Britain was underway.

A huge part of video game history is context. Context surrounding a game's development, context surrounding a game's release, context of the time and place the game was made during. Context informs how we interpret the past. This week on the show I am joined by author and journalist Ross Benes to talk about his book "1999: The Year Low Culutre Conquered America and Kickstarted Our Bizarre Times." We discuss what about the late 90's has informed so much of our present, how that culture affected the games that came out and how the games themselves were part of that percieved "low culture" at the time. There is so much more in his book worth diving into but I felt like this was a good introduction for ya'll to see what Ross has written. What a week in the Premier League, so much action to discuss, this could be a long stream - strap in folks! Loads of FPL discussion to be hard too, with Joao Pedro owners happy with the points, but not with Enzo taking the penalty. Bruno scores his this week, to the delight of his owners, but leaves it late. Liverpool edge pass Arsenal with a rocket from Szoboszlai and West Ham cause an upset at Forest, in a result no-one saw coming! **Sorry for the disruption on tonight's Pod - Sam's ok, but really felt very unwell during the live stream. Bit dramatic? I was hoping to say this after a playoff final win rather than the current mess, but I've decided to call time on the podcast. It's something I've been weighing up for a while and, to be honest, it's an acknowledgement that my heart's just not in it quite as much as it used to be. Which, if I'm being blunt, you may have noticed at points last season. I started BladesPod eight years ago, which seems a long time to do anything really. My goal was to be something a little more “considered” than eg Praise or Grumble football phone-in style content, with fairly chill takes rather than clickbaity sensationalism. I hope that BladesPod has lived up to that in the main, but I'm now at a stage of life where United aren't at the front of my mind anywhere near as much. Rather than put out something a bit rubbish or half-hearted, I think it's just time to hang up the mic. I've hugely, hugely enjoyed my time recording and putting these podcasts out there, and the (generally!) good-natured feedback they've generated, even when it's a difference of opinion. Above all it's through this podcast that I've made some genuine friendships and met a load of people I don't believe I'd ever have crossed paths with otherwise. As the pod's lifetime has overlapped with me becoming a parent – not to mention living through a global pandemic – I can't overstate how useful it's been for my own mental health. I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who's ever taken the time to record with me – Anna, Dave, Hal, and all the guest fans of other teams who I've ever had on, back when I had a bit more enthusiasm. To Jay, without whom I don't think I'd have carried on going for this long: a man who was my gateway into football analytics as well as giving the enthusiasm and self-belief that we were doing something worth ours' and other people's time. It's been awesome to see him find an amazing career in the game he devoted so much of his spare time to – one of the hardest-working people I've ever encountered. And of course, a huge thanks to Andrew – someone I'd never met or even spoken to before we recorded an episode together for the first time, and now probably a person I speak to more often than anyone who doesn't share my surname. An absolute pleasure to record all those episodes with you – six years! – and the one thing that's made me put off finishing the podcast for the last year or two. A legend of the Lane. Finally, a thank you to anyone who's ever listened to the pod or otherwise interacted with me on social media etc. It was only because there appeared to be any audience for this at all that I kept doing it beyond the first amateurish episode. I really do appreciate that that audience continued right up to this day, and I hope you got at least some enjoyment out of the pod during its run. I'll still be writing about Sheffield United Women on my newsletter WOMEN OF STEEL (http://womenofsteel.substack.com), and hopefully will keep writing about the men's team for the Pinch and anywhere else that will accept a few words from me when they come to mind. But for now, that's all folks. Thanks again for listening to us. UTB, Ben

We're often told to do more, move faster, and chase the next big trend—but some of the most remarkable successes come from narrowing your focus, obsessing over one thing, and truly understanding the people you're serving. Ben Francis knows this better than most.He started Gymshark with nothing more than a sewing machine and a passion for making gym clothes that actually worked for him. From those humble beginnings, he built a billion-dollar brand—carefully, sustainably, and with a vision for a company that lasts 100 years, not just a flash in the pan. And yes, he's still young, proving that you can dream big while thinking long term.Recorded at the very impressive Gymshark HQ in Birmingham, UK, this episode takes us inside the energy and culture that fuel the brand. We dive into Ben's journey of obsession, experimentation, and relentless focus, exploring how to build something meaningful without having all the answers, learning from failures, and why understanding your customer is everything. If you've ever wanted to create something that lasts, this conversation is for you. This is A Bit of Optimism. Check out Gymshark here: https://www.gymshark.com/
We delve the depths of Tallon IV on this episode of Still Loading. I'm joined by returning guest to the podcast Chris (aka the British Bond Addict) to talk Metroid Prime. Metroid Prime is a game that has eluded me for a while. I first played it over a decade ago but never got around to beating it even though I made it over 90% through the game. That has been finally corrected and I couldn't be happier I got to experience it.... with a few complaints here and there. Chris and I discuss the music, the world, the story, why he's wrong about the story... I mean we just discuss the story. Anyway. Learn how to morph ball and roll on into this new episode! When Nadine Whitney interviewed actor Frank Mosley, she started their chat with a game akin to Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. Want to know how to get to Meryl Streep from Frank? Easier than even Frank probably thinks. Frank starred in Geoff Marslett's Quantum Cowboys which also featured Alex Cox. Alex Cox directed Ed Harris in Walker. Ed also features in Stephen Daldry's adaptation of The Hours.Frank is usually a supporting or character actor, but when given the chance to lead a film such as Cameron Bruce Nelson's award-winning 2015 film Some Beasts there is a particular grace to his performance which proves he can (and should) carry a film.Originally from Texas and now living in Los Angeles, Frank has been in three films with Lily Gladstone, Chained for Life directed by Aaron Schimberg, and is an accomplished director in his own right.Frank has the incredible ability to create and sustain community within his artistic practice. He's open to the absurd, the heartfelt, the just plain weird, and the full dramatic spectrum.Nadine spoke to Frank about working with Albert Birney and Peter Ohs (he also featured in Ohs' excellent Love and Work) about their 8-Bit fantasy OBEX in which he plays a television named Victor. Take a listen to Frank and his generous and warm presence (even before he'd finished his first coffee) and then go find his work.Check out Nadine's reviews of OBEX and Quantum Cowboys.Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Bluesky @thecurbau. “Nuclear” might make you wince—but the real problem isn't the energy, it's the branding. Safe, low-carbon, and scalable, nuclear could be a climate hero—if only we told the story right.Isabelle Boemeke is on a mission to change how we think about nuclear energy. A Brazilian model turned the world's first nuclear influencer, she created her alter ego, Isodope, to show a new generation the benefits of clean energy—while cutting through the fear shaped by war movies and disaster shows. In her new book, Rad Future, she makes the science, history, and promise of nuclear power accessible to everyone. In this episode, we talk about why nuclear scares us, how we need to rethink the climate conversation, and why embracing nuclear energy could be one of our smartest moves yet. Isabelle also shares her personal journey—from modeling to advocacy, building Isodope, and helping shift the conversation around clean energy for a better, brighter future. This is… A Bit of Optimism. Relationships have the power to change lives in ways both visible and hidden. Deep, supportive bonds can quiet inflammation in the body, protect against disease, and anchor people through decades of triumphs and trials. Communities that come together—whether in small groups at a church or around a shared health goal—often achieve far more than individuals working alone, sometimes transforming their health on a massive scale. Lifelong friends celebrate each other's victories without jealousy, weather hardship side by side, and dare to speak difficult truths even at the risk of the relationship. Yet, many remain in unfulfilling connections out of fear of loneliness, forgetting that genuine, vulnerable connection is not just emotionally nourishing—it is essential to human health and resilience. In this episode, I talk with Simon Sinek, Esther Perel, and Angelika Alana about how relationships are vital not just for emotional health, but for physical wellbeing and can be a great source of growth and healing. Simon is a spark that ignites passion and ideas. He envisions a world where people wake up inspired, feel safe, and end their day fulfilled. As an unshakeable optimist and trained ethnographer, Simon is fascinated by people and organizations that make a lasting impact. He has discovered remarkable patterns in how they think, act, and communicate, revealing how people perform at their best. Simon is widely known for his TED Talk on "WHY" and his viral video on millennials in the workplace. Through bestselling books like Start with WHY and his podcast A Bit of Optimism, he continues to inspire. Founder of The Optimism Company and Optimism Press, Simon shares innovative views on leadership, attracting international attention. He also works with the U.S. government, the RAND Corporation, and in 2021, founded The Curve to reform modern policing, advancing justice with dignity, equity, and fairness. Psychotherapist and New York Times bestselling author Esther Perel is recognized as one of today's most insightful and original voices on modern relationships. Fluent in nine languages, she helms a therapy practice in New York City and serves as an organizational consultant for Fortune 500 companies around the world. Her celebrated TED Talks have garnered more than 30 million views and her bestselling books, Mating in Captivity and The State of Affairs, are global phenomena translated into nearly 30 languages. Esther is also an executive producer and host of the popular podcasts Where Should We Begin? and How's Work? Her latest project is Where Should We Begin - A Game of Stories with Esther Perel. Angelika Alana is the founder and CEO of the Somatic Healing Institute. She has been featured in Vanity Fair, Well+Good, and Modern Luxury. She certifies coaches and facilitators in her transformational body-based healing method. She has traveled and studied extensively in Indonesia, Brazil, Australia, and the UK, and is a massive foodie with her husband Patrick Drake, co-founder of Hello Fresh. We're wired to chase the next spark - scrolling, swiping, refreshing - but some of our brightest ideas sneak in when we stop chasing, let boredom settle in and give our minds room to wander.Elle Cordova knows the power of that pause. When the pandemic hit pause on her life as a touring musician, she stumbled into new creative territory - making offbeat comedy videos about delightfully nerdy topics like particle physics, grammar, and fonts. Those sketches went viral, and suddenly she was thriving as a social media creator with a devoted following. In this episode, we talk about finding what truly lights you up, pushing through writer's block, working with anxiety - and yes, Star Wars makes an appearance (because of course it does). Plus, Elle treats us to a live, in-studio performance of her song Roswell. This…is A Bit of Optimism. For more on Elle, check out:ellecordova.com/

This was the most epic Zoom call we've ever been a part of — an incredible conversation with NASA astronaut Jonny Kim, live from the International Space Station, with sunrise on Earth as a stunningly causal site behind him as they barreled at 17,000 mph in orbit. Thanks to the amazing team at Johnson Space Center, Jonny was able to join us to share insights from a life that defies limits, showing what it truly means to lead and serve on and off the planet. In this episode, we grapple with a startling and powerful idea: that there can be a privilege in how we face our darkest days. For those who find the strength to rise through empathy and courage, adversity transforms from a burden into a source of profound growth and resilience. Jonny's journey—from a violent childhood to becoming a Navy SEAL, Harvard-trained doctor, and astronaut—embodies this truth. Driven not just by pain or pride in loved ones, but by a genuine ambition to become his best self, Jonny's story challenges us all to embrace hardship as a catalyst for leadership and service. This is a conversation the 13-year-old Simon, in his blue jumpsuit, would be very proud of. This is… A Bit of Optimism.
