Retired agent Martin Reardon reviews his Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution (UFAP) nationwide manhunt for a child predator wanted for the 1995 kidnapping and rape of a 9-year-old girl. Released from state prison just weeks earlier, Rickey Allen Bright had served 15 years of a life sentence for a 1979 offense involving a 6-year-old girl. Due to the heinous nature of the offense and his previous conviction, Bright was named to the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitive List and featured on America's Most Wanted and Unsolved Mysteries. He was fugitive #444 and on the top ten list for three weeks. He was ultimately captured during the January 1996 East Coast blizzard just hours after America's Most Wanted aired the segment about the manhunt for the third time. After the case review, Marty also talks about his assignment as a Legal Attaché in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Doha, Qatar, and his post-FBI career in the Middle East. Next year marks the 60th anniversary of Dark Shadows. The gothic soap opera wasn't originally intended to include a vampire, but when creator Dan Curtis introduced the character of Barnabas Collins in a last-ditch effort to avoid cancellation, he inadvertently launched a cultural phenomenon. As portrayed by actor Jonathan Frid, the character of Barnabas sparked a never-ending debate among horror fans as to whether vampires should be depicted as pure predators or tragic, misunderstood outcasts. I talk with Danielle Gelehrter (host of the podcast Terror at Collinwood) and authors Mark Dawidziak and Jeff Thompson about why the show had a meteoric rise and fall, what the series reflected about the 1960s, and whether Dark Shadows can have eternal life as a form of IP. I'm delighted to speak with Dave Bright and Dr Oliver Runswick in this episode. Dave is a coach and Senior Lecturer in Sport Coaching at Chichester University. His main research interests are in motor learning and its application to practical sport coaching. Dave has coached martial arts for 25+ years. And it was from his experiences in coaching that led him to do a Sport Science Coaching degree, then a Sport & Exercise Psychology Masters degree. Dave's current role requires him to develop undergraduate students as sport coaches, providing them with an awareness and understanding of the underpinning motor learning and coaching research. Dave is undertaking a PhD investigating the effects of cognitive load and autonomous task selection in motor learning. Ollie is a Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King's College London. His research focuses on understanding and enhancing learning and performance in domains including sport, dance, education, and the military. Ollie is the Editor in Chief of Perceptual and Motor Learning Skills at Sage Publishing and a Human Performance Technology Consultant providing consultancy in virtual reality applications, skill acquisition and motor learning, perceptual-cognitive skill, training/practice design, talent ID and development, vision in performance and performance systems. Ollie received a first-class BSc in Sport and Exercise Science from Swansea University, MSc in Human Movement Science from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, PGCHE from St Mary's University, and PhD from Liverpool Hope University where he studied perceptual-motor skills based with St Mary's University's Expertise and Skill Acquisition Research Group. Dave, Ollie and I discuss a paper they co-wrote along with Dr Jenny Smith, Dr Philip Kearney which compares two learning conditions - task-related autonomy and cognitive effort. Research has shown that both feelings of autonomy (as supported by OPTIMAL theory) and cognitive effort (as supported by Challenge Point) can positively impact skill development. This research paper aimed to compare these two approaches to learning. Results showed no differences between the effects of autonomy and cognitive effort, but uncovered participants use of tactical learning to improve. We unpack the paper and discuss its real-world application for coaching settings.

Nick writes “I had a roadside sighting in CA with my mom summer of 2008 when I was 18. It was about 12:30-1am in the foothills of Placerville CA. We had a newspaper route that often had us heading home past midnight. It was mid August a few months after graduating from high school. It was a beautiful night we had the windows down just cruising. My mom had a Geo Metro that we used for the paper route with a 3 cylinder engine so it was not fast lol. It was a blind corner and our headlights hit this thing, and my mom didn't see it at first (she never sees anything, we once almost hit a buck so close I could see the velvet on his antlers but she didn't see it at all) but then she downshifted and hit the gas. I knew what I saw but I turned to her and asked what she saw, she had the same description as me so knew I wasn't crazy because what I saw was nothing short of impossible. I saw it running before the headlights actually hit it and it was like a cartoon how it was running, hands down by his side ( I say his because for some reason I knew it was a male) and his head didn't bobble at all. As soon as the headlight hit this thing it just stopped on a dime, the dust it kicked up floating past like a mist as it stood there. Bright like blood orange eye shine (not glowing) with a hint of green. It was holding a watermelon in one arm with other hanging down by its side it's hand shaped like a Lego man hand. It wasn't crazy huge, maybe six to six and a half feet tall. All black but thinning around the pecks. I could see the veins in his biceps. It looked like an Aboriginal person from Australia. That's the closest thing I can compare it too. Very human like. Definitely not an animal.”

In this sweeping episode of Devolution Power Hour, Jon Herold and Burning Bright dig into the geopolitical and narrative shifts defining Trump's second term. They begin with Trump's masterful Saudi Arabia speech, interpreting it as both a strategic declaration and a roadmap for global realignment. The hosts explore the rise of the “sovereign alliance”, a growing bloc of nationalist-led nations turning away from the globalist order, and unpack Iran's surprising offer to sign a nuclear agreement if the U.S. ditches Netanyahu's influence. They dissect the quiet trade deal with China, revealing how Trump and Xi secretly negotiated economic rebalancing while maintaining the illusion of public hostility, trapping both the media and the Fed in their own lies. They argue Trump is staging a peaceful, constitutional hostile takeover, aligning with founding principles to dismantle a captured U.S. government without firing a shot. From the restructuring of the National Security Council and the fading relevance of Congress, to the narrative inversion of historical allies and enemies, Herold and Bright make the case that we've entered a new phase of the info war: the Sovereign Siege. It's tactical, psychological, and unstoppable, and they're calling the shots as it unfolds.
Kody Kinsley has been called many things—operator, innovator, Medicaid “nerd”—but above all, he's a fierce advocate for the health and well-being of the populations Medicaid serves. Now a senior advisor at the Milken Institute and recently North Carolina's Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kinsley joins Keith Figlioli for a wide-ranging conversation about how Medicaid works, why it matters, and where innovation is reshaping its future. A native of North Carolina, Kinsley brings personal experience and professional depth to his perspective. Growing up uninsured, he watched his mother navigate pediatric clinics, sliding-scale providers, and supply closets offering free samples to keep her kids healthy. That formative exposure ultimately propelled him into a career spanning healthcare operations, behavioral health, public policy, and government leadership. As North Carolina's health secretary, Kinsley led one of the country's largest and most complex human services agencies, overseeing everything from Medicaid operations and public health to psychiatric hospitals and child welfare. He played a central role in advancing Medicaid expansion in the state—an achievement shaped by bipartisan negotiation, careful balancing of federal and state resources, and a deep understanding of the healthcare landscape. In this episode, Kinsley and Keith cover: The structural realities behind state Medicaid programs. Kinsley describes how mega-agencies like North Carolina's bring together financing, public health, regulation, and direct care delivery—touching millions of lives daily, often invisibly. Federal-state dynamics and looming policy shifts. From federal match rates to provider taxes and budget triggers, Kinsley explains the intricacies of how money moves between federal and state governments—and what's at stake when Congress debates Medicaid cuts or structural reforms. The human cost behind budget debates. Behind every line item is a person: whether it's dental coverage, hospice services, or in-home care, Kinsley argues that policymakers must weigh the downstream impacts of funding decisions on real lives and long-term system costs. Bright spots and innovation. Kinsley highlights North Carolina's “Healthy Opportunities” pilot—one of the first initiatives nationally to use Medicaid dollars for non-medical needs like food, housing, and transportation. Early results show promise, including improved outcomes and significant cost savings, suggesting a roadmap for other states. Looking forward. While political winds may shift and financial pressures mount, Kinsley remains optimistic. He points to growing public support for Medicaid and hopes the nation can move beyond divisive debates over whether healthcare is a right or privilege—focusing instead on smarter, more sustainable ways to deliver care. To hear Kody Kinsley and Keith Figlioli unpack these topics and more, listen to this episode of Healthcare is Hard: A Podcast for Insiders.

Your future's so bright you've got to wear SHADES -or remove them? THE GIVE OF UNCERTAINTY IS YOUR NEXT EVOLUTION.Uncertainty in your life feels like driving through dense fog.Turning on the brights only worsens visibility, just like working harder does when you feel aimless or stuck. You don't need to see miles ahead to continue to move forward, but moving forward does require you to reduce your speed to a pace that feels irritating, even unbearable. If you keep moving forward one step at a time, eventually the fog does lift. More importantly, taking small steps builds your capacity to withstand the discomfort of uncertainty (which, let's face it, is basically life itself).Over time, your association with this discomfort gradually shifts from "I'm getting nowhere" to "This is normal/part of it," to even "This is a sign that I'm on track."The gift in uncertainty is the opportunity to build self-trust.Self-trust doesn't mean you always know the answer right now.Self-trust is the belief that when an answer isn't yet available, you have enough information within you to take the next step.It is the belief that you will figure it out, in time, one small step at a time.It is resisting urgency to get ahead because you know that your wisdom speaks loudest in the stillness of the present moment. We're taught that happiness is a future reward at the end of a checklist, but happiness is a present felt experience, an emotion that can only exist in the present moment. And so if happiness is the goal in your career journey, then slowing down doesn't mean you'll fall behind; it means the goal is getting closer. So with that said, this is the very construct that brings you into POWER WITH + POWER WITHIN structure I'll leave you with.Choice operates within various power dynamics, including power over, power under, power with, and power within. Each dynamic reflects a different approach to choice:Power Over: Often associated with domination, power over seeks to control others, frequently instilling the belief that there is no choice.Power Under: Characterized by subordination, power under operates under the assumption of having no choice.Power With: Collaborative in nature, power with recognizes and respects the choices of all involved.Power Within: Emphasizes personal agency and the intrinsic ability to choose, underpinning one's sense of empowerment.Which feels congruent? In an age long past, death was not a mystery, for a palm tree once grew upon the earth that served as a path between life and afterlife. Genre: Mythology Excerpt: He came by sea in ships laden with his forces… By day he attacked, and by night he attacked. They knew that they must destroy him. And they knew that they could not destroy him, for he was now too powerful. What story or stories am I revisiting in this episode? Each Season 8 episode is a standalone story, but it's connected to or inspired by a previous story through a character, a place, an object, a concept, a continuation of events (ahem, sequel), and so on. In an earlier story, I wrote of a grieving young man who sought to retrieve his mother from the isle where the souls of those who have died go, just before they pass through the doorway into the afterlife: “The Isle of Mist and Gloom.” MERCH!Interested in merch, like mugs and notebooks, featuring my artwork? A stylized depiction on a tapestry or scroll. At left, a man stands in front of a black cobra that is larger than him. Both face to the right. The man holds his right hand on his hip and holds his left hand out, palm forming a “stop” gesture. They stand on a green shore with bright blades of grass. At right, a man in a boat raises his hands and face to the sky. Before him two strange beasts with hooked beaks and feathery scales stare to the left. Between boat and shore are stylized curls depicting waves. Top center, the bottom half of circle that depicts the sun. Bright rays beam to the left, bolts of lightning fan out to the right. Sixty-eight percent of students are below grade level, a staggering statistic Gary Surdam, Founder and CEO of Bright Start Ed-Tech Inc., refuses to accept. In this episode of the Superpowers for Good show, Gary shared how his company is addressing this challenge with an innovative AI-powered solution designed to create personalized learning experiences for every student.Gary explained that the idea for Bright Start Ed-Tech's flagship program, Illuminate, began while teaching a STEAM course in Thailand. He recalled giving students a problem to solve: “You could see the wheels in their mind turning, but you didn't see them finding the solution. Then, all of a sudden, this young man's face illuminated. Within seconds, he gave a solution to the problem.” That moment of discovery became the foundation for Illuminate, a program designed to spark these “illuminating moments” in students worldwide.Using AI, Bright Start Ed-Tech tailors lessons to individual learning styles, levels, and preferences. “AI really brings all of that together and individualizes the learning for our students,” Gary explained. The company's approach is a bold departure from the traditional one-size-fits-all education model.Bright Start's strategy unfolds in two phases. The first phase focuses on empowering parents as educators. “Parents are the first and most important teachers in the lives of their children,” Gary emphasized. The program equips parents to address the learning gaps many students experienced during the pandemic. The second phase targets school systems, delivering personalized learning apps to transform classrooms. “We're the answer to the problems that are happening in education,” Gary said. By using AI to provide targeted engagement, the program aims to re-engage students and help them succeed.Bright Start Ed-Tech is currently raising funds through a regulated crowdfunding campaign on Funding Hope to scale its transformative technology. “We're looking at raising our funds to take us a step further,” Gary said, inviting support from investors who share his vision of a brighter future for education.Bright Start Ed-Tech isn't just a company—it's a catalyst for change in an education system that desperately needs innovation. Gary's vision and determination are paving the way for a brighter future for students everywhere.tl;dr:Bright Start Ed-Tech uses AI to create personalized learning solutions tailored to each student's needs. The company's two-phase approach empowers parents and transforms schools with targeted educational tools.Gary Surdam's vision began with a moment of inspiration while teaching a STEAM course in Thailand. His superpower, tenacity, has driven him to overcome challenges and refine his innovative technology.Bright Start Ed-Tech is raising funds via crowdfunding to scale its transformative personalized learning platform. How to Develop Tenacity As a SuperpowerGary Surdam's superpower is tenacity—a relentless determination to overcome challenges and drive forward. As Gary explained, “Tenacity, never giving up. I had this vision…never be ashamed to dream big dreams, because what you dream, you will become.” He emphasized the importance of perseverance, even when progress feels slow, and shared how his unwavering commitment to his vision for Bright Start Ed-Tech has kept him moving forward despite obstacles.Illustrative Story:Gary shared a story illustrating his tenacity. In 2015, he had the idea for Bright Start Ed-Tech and launched a crowdfunding campaign. Despite raising just $95, he refused to abandon his vision. “Back in 2015, technology wasn't at the level we are now,” he said. Years of hard work and refinement led to the development of Illuminate, leveraging advancements in AI to create personalized learning experiences. His persistence through setbacks exemplifies his commitment to making a difference in education.Tips for Developing Tenacity:Start each day by setting clear goals and focusing on your vision.Reflect nightly on your progress, identifying positives and areas for improvement.Embrace setbacks as learning opportunities rather than failures.Stay aware of potential challenges, keeping “your eyes open” to avoid pitfalls.Break large goals into small, measurable steps to maintain momentum.By following Gary's example and advice, you can make tenacity a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileGary Surdam (he/him):Founder, President, Professor, Bright Start Ed-Tech Inc.About Bright Start Ed-Tech Inc.: Bright Start Ed-Tech Inc. is an innovative education technology company dedicated to transforming learning through AI-driven personalized instruction. A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over
A baby's first word is often a cherished milestone, but some cultures pay more attention to other firsts, like a baby's first laugh. A fascinating new book by a linguist examines language at the beginning and the end of life. Plus, the expression Murphy's Law reflects the idea that “anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” But is the term a slur against the Irish? And an old word for new life: the verb to whicken involves daylight hours growing longer in springtime. Also, breard, honor bright and honour bright, the long history of groceries, a brain teaser about pig Latin, sea painter, give someone down the road, give someone down the banks, a different way to write AI, plurale tantem, how to pronounce rhetoric, and lots more. Parrotdog (https://parrotdog.co.nz) has been a craft-brewing mainstay in New Zealand for nearly 15 years, and with national distribution and a production brewery and taproom steps from the beach and Wellington's airport, they reach a broad audience of consumers across a range of styles. While their core line features everything from a classic C-malt IPA to pils with “vivid passion fruit and white-wine notes,” they also constantly iterate and experiment on the brewery's five-barrel pilot with everything from fresh-hop lagers to saturated hazy IPAs. This week, cofounder and brewing director Matt Warner joins the podcast to talk hops (of course) and how they employ both domestic and Pacific Northwest varieties across a range of styles. Along the way, he discusses: growing from a contract brand to a small brewery to a regional production brewery scaling from homebrew recipes to commercial batches in the early days designing “zingy” New Zealand pils that snaps across and cleans the palate rebalancing blends of Riwaka and Nelson Sauvin yearly to adapt to crop-year differences how Motueka changes over the picking window with a bit of “ginger crunch” character instability in Motueka after pelletizing using hops to build bigger mouthfeel in otherwise dry beer new Bract Program experimental hops that show promise And more.
