Today we are talking about one of my most favorite things to discuss — how to be an audacious woman! One of the key qualities that I've noticed that distinguish entrepreneurs who are absolutely killing it from those who say they've “already tried everything” is the willingness to step outside the norm, a willingness to be uncomfortable, and the ability to take bold risks.   My guest today, Chana Ross, is someone whom I deeply respect for her audaciousness, risk-taking personality, and level-headedness. Chana shares her personal story and career journey, how to know when it is the right time to make an uncomfortable choice, how to live life on your own terms, how to become more decisive and trust yourself, and the key pieces you need to put in place to become more confident, bold, and audacious!   Key Takeaways: [1:12] About today's episode with Chana Ross. [22:44] When Kate is working with a patient that is experiencing estrogen dominance, what approach does she take? [24:08] Is estrogen dominance impacting the population of women who are having infrequent, irregular, or no menstrual cycles? How does Kate assess this? Because that's definitely not the answer. — Kate Vasquez   “There are a lot of disorders and conditions associated with estrogen dominance that women aren't aware of, such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, PCOS … breast cancer. … [Women] are not aware because we put these labels on them and they're treated a certain way.” — Kate Vasquez   “A lot of women will ask me, ‘Well, does my period start the cycle? Or is it at the end of the cycle?' So it's really important that we … educate women because the menstrual phase is the start of the cycle. So day one of your period is day one of the cycle.” — Kate Vasquez   “We have the power to create health and disorder in the body. … Being mindful of our thoughts can really affect the quality of our life and how our cells respond.” — Kate Vasquez   “If we can optimize and maximize our sleep, we're going to feel so much better. Today, we're going to be exploring a tool and a mechanism for healing that, for a very long time, was suppressed because of societal messaging. And that tool is psychedelic-assisted healing.   This is an arena that has the opportunity to be flooded with funding and research. For a long time, we as humans have been connected to various forms of plant medicine and various Indigenous groups have made the use of psychedelics an important part of ceremonial healing.   So today, we're going to break down some of the science, some of the legal avenues that people have to be able to explore, leverage, and utilize psychedelics to accentuate and expedite their healing.   Leading us through this conversation today is my friend and colleague, Angela Ward! As a Registered Nurse, Transformational Coach, and “Soul Midwife,” Angela helps move people through a healing journey by leveraging psychedelics. She helps facilitate the coming together of the medical side, the spiritual side, and the psychotropic side of psychedelics as a tool for healing. Though this might be a method of healing you are not interested in trying out for yourself, I invite you to listen to this episode, regardless! I want you to go into this episode with an open mind and think outside the box of how things have always been done.   Key Takeaways: [1:22] About today's conversation with Angela Ward. It's the cornerstone of my methodology because we need purpose to serve as our guiding light when things don't seem all that certain or when adversity strikes.   My guest today is Tallia Deljou and finding purpose is something she dedicates her life to and coaches her clients on how to ask smarter questions to really step away from your “work” or “parent” identity and really find what's true and impactful for you.   In this episode, we learn about purpose. How you define it, how you find it, why it's important, and so much more! People often think they've found purpose, but the moment they lose their job, or retire, or their children move out of the home, their purpose seems to crumble.   Tallia offers insight on how to cultivate purpose that's so sustainable that it doesn't matter when you walk away from an identity, you can still live an authentic and meaningful life.   Key Takeaways: [1:20] About today's episode with Tallia Deljou. [2:45] Welcoming Tallia to the podcast. [5:45] How does Tallia define purpose? [8:20] How do you really live a life of purpose when you have student loans, kids, and adult responsibilities? [11:10] Is purpose a privilege? Don't get in your own way. Don't let this mindset stop you from striving for purpose. [14:00] Everyone here has the permission to pursue their purpose. [15:35] Your roles and identity are constantly changing. That doesn't mean you picked the wrong path. [17:55] People convince themselves they have to pick. In reality, you can have both. [18:50] You get to write your own rules. [19:00] How do we know when we've found our purpose or are just following a path we think society wants for us? [21:35] List out all the different roles and personas you play in your daily life, whether that be as a spouse, a parent, a daughter/son to your parents, your friends, and more. [26:55] When you have a purpose, you don't pool everything you have into one identity. [28:55] When your loved ones give you good advice, you still need to have a filter to see what parts of that information are true or relevant for you and where you are in life. [31:10] Rapid fire questions! Tallia shares a book that's really impacted her this year.   Mentioned in This Episode: Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi Stop Living on Autopilot: Take Responsibility for Your Life and Rediscover a Bolder, Happier You, by Antonio Neves Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones, by James Clear   More About Tallia Deljou Tallia Deljou is a positive psychology expert and transformational life coach helping people connect to their power and purpose. What do entrepreneurship, organ meat, and George Clooney all have in common? If you're stumped on this, I'm here to help you out! James shares how he made a shift in his career from being a chef to celebrities to creating a product that he really believes can revolutionize our health.   We had a truly fascinating conversation about James' career evolution, how he created an innovative, first-of-its-kind product; how he found his true purpose and passion in life; and what it looks like to navigate this intersection of health and entrepreneurship.   Key Takeaways: [2:00] About today's episode with James Barry. His inauguration into restaurant-style cooking came later when he was the vegan/vegetarian chef on the Vans Warped Tour, which traveled to 50 North American cities in 60 days. Upon returning to Los Angeles, James continued to be a private chef and had the fortune of cooking for celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Mariska Hargitay, George Clooney, Gerard Butler, Sean “Puffy” Combs, Barbra Streisand, and John Cusack. Not wanting to limit the audience of his healthy and tasty style of cooking, James started Wholesome2Go, a healthy, high-quality food delivery company that served under his leadership in the Los Angeles area for eight years.   Most recently, James launched my first functional food product, Pluck; an organ-based, all-purpose seasoning. This seasoning is the first of its kind and an amazingly easy and delicious way for people to get organ meats into their diet.   James also co-authored the recipes in Margaret Floyd's book, Eat Naked, and co-authored the follow-up cookbook, The Naked Foods Cookbook. There are certain things that I've made the decision about a long time ago that I would never talk about online. One of these topics that I said I would never discuss publicly was vaccines. Can you think of a more controversial topic? I've done podcasts on sex, politics, and money — all of which can be fairly taboo  — but vaccines take the cake. But today, we're going to go there.   We're going to not just discuss the current landscape of vaccines, but the idea of informed consent. How do we, as individuals, take radical responsibility for our own health? How do we make an informed decision when we're only hearing one side of the message? This whole conversation is about informing a new way for you to think; it is not about informing what I want you to do.   I hope you'll join me in pulling back the curtain on this entire discussion around vaccines.   Key Takeaways: [:42] About today's controversial topic. [2:24] Why the discussion of vaccinations is not black and white, but in fact, grey. [2:54] Why it is important for us to be able to have nuanced conversations around vaccines. [4:00] Why I named this episode, “Why I got the jab and also why that's not your business.” [5:40] The current landscape of COVID-19 vaccinations and why I made the decision to get the jab. [7:54] How we are alienating others in making a different type of informed consent. [9:13] This conversation is really about: what types of questions could or should you be asking as someone willing and able to take responsibility for their own health? [10:25] What I've learned as a clinician about the hesitation around getting the vaccine. [13:11] The 30-thousand-foot view of vaccines. [14:05] Why we ultimately need to make the best choice for ourselves on an individual level. [15:40] What the normal vaccine development process looks like vs. the COVID-19 vaccine development process. [16:36] Why deciding whether or not you're going to get the vaccine is, in fact, a very nuanced perspective when you get to the ground level. [17:31] This is a situation that requires that we have the opportunity to move forward in our decision-making from a place of informed consent. [18:32] How to provide informed consent to patients. [20:09] The information that we are entitled to receive in order to make an informed, consensual decision around our health. [25:48] The most important pieces we need to clear about when it comes to vaccines. [26:38] We need to be aware of peer pressure so that we can make autonomous decisions with respect to our health. [27:22] Why it is imperative that we approach this situation as critical thinkers during this time. [29:40] Most importantly: we need to stop judging others' decisions. [30:18] Why I felt it was important to open the door on this conversation.   Mentioned in This Episode: 24:54 Jordan Robertson — confirmation bias; making informed choices as a health consumer, headlines   If you enjoyed our conversation and would like to hear more: Please subscribe to The Entrepology Podcast on Stitcher or iTunes. The Entrepology Podcast

While I don't like rules, I do believe that rules have a place in both our society and in our lives.   When it comes to living my own and being able to execute in alignment with my own values, I leverage rules from a unique stance. A few years ago, I read an incredibly impactful book, The Code of the Extraordinary Mind: 10 Unconventional Laws to Redefine Your Life and Succeed On Your Own Terms, by Vishen Lakhiani. It changed my way of thinking around rules and “brules” (AKA bullsh*t rules; the rules society has created for us). Vishen contends, and I have observed, that if we are not clear on defining our own set of rules in life, we fall victim to these “brules” that are created by society.   Since this read, I've begun setting my own rules. What this has done for me in my own life is that it has created a set of boundaries and provided a framework that I'm committed to living by. In designing my own rules, I've learned how to play my own version of “the game” and live in complete alignment with my values, goals, and where I want to go. This is how I stay focused and know what actions to take in the heat of the moment.   Join me in this episode to learn more about setting your own rules, breaking the ones that don't serve you, optimizing your focus and performance, and the five rules I am currently living by right now.   Key Takeaways: [:43] About today's solo episode! [2:52] Why we need to be clear on setting our own rules in life. [4:14] How I reevaluate my rules to ensure they align with my values and goals. [5:45] The rules I set when I first set up my practice to create space and healthy boundaries in my life (and how they worked and didn't work). [8:30] How do we know when a new opportunity that comes our way is really in alignment with where we want to go? [9:06] How rules become a framework — and why this is key to living your life in alignment with your values. [10:34] Changing and creating your rules with the intentions that you set. [11:06] The rules I am currently living by right now in Q2 of this year. [11:30] My first rule: your health comes first. [16:12] My second rule: I'm going to stop selling “me.” [18:22] My third rule: no work on weekends. [19:16] My fourth rule: clear your debt by July 1st. Dr. Michell Peris is a Naturopathic Doctor, community builder, speaker, women's empowerment advocate, and mother. She is truly an innovator when it comes to her utilization of group programming to deliver better health outcomes.   Regardless of whether or not you work in healthcare, today's conversation is incredibly important and relevant. And more than ever before, we're in a time and place for disruption, entrepreneurship, and innovative ideas to be brought to the table in our downstream conversations.   In this conversation, we take a deep dive into how entrepreneurship and outside-of-the-box thinking actually can lend solutions to a healthcare system that is costing us lives, money, and potential in our own health. We take a look at the incredible healthcare model that Michelle has developed around group health, its capacity to change people's lives profoundly (and in a highly economically efficient manner), and how she is leading the charge on this new frontier of healthcare.   Michelle is absolutely going to blow you away with her mission to support women and the model of care that she has developed in her practice. Today's episode is super interesting for those of you who really want to understand what is “below the hood' of your health!   I am joined today by Reed Davis, a Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner (HHP) and the founder of Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® (FDN). He has literally trained thousands of practitioners around the world on how to leverage functional testing, how to understand and go deep with functional testing to truly understand what's happening inside someone's body and someone's health.   The key to what he's doing is not necessarily all of the years he has spent in school; it's the thousands of tests that he has performed on patients over the course of his career. Reed offers such incredible and unique insight in terms of what is going on with our bodies on a functional level — not lab testing that just pumps out a value — but lab testing that helps us to understand the intricacies of what is developing and what is going on in our health.   In this fascinating episode, Reed gives us a deeper understanding of our susceptibility to viruses, explains the metabolic chaos that can happen when we have hormones that are dysregulated, provides unique insight on the role of stress (and how it plays out in shifting our health over the long term), how our microbiome plays into the overarching status of our health and life, and much more!   If there is one thing that I hope you all take away from this episode it is that there is this huge opportunity to understand your bio-individuality and to assess your health. You're going to be blown away by this conversation today with Reed Davis!   Key Takeaways: [1:41] About today's episode. [3:23] Welcoming Reed Davis to the podcast! [3:54] Reed shares about his background and why he is uniquely qualified to lead today's conversation. [7:04] About Functional Diagnostic Nutrition and the origin story of its creation. [11:10] The role of functional testing in an active person who's engaged in their environment versus genetic testing, and the relationship between these two streams. [13:30] Reed speaks about the common patterns and sequences he started to see amongst his patients in common ailments — and what it indicates. [17:18] Reed provides some high-level commentary on the broad global susceptibility right now (especially for viruses like COVID-19) based on environmental influences and global health statuses. [20:46] Reed shares about the key functional tests that are at the top of his list. [22:55] The major shifts in patterns that Reed has seen in the last 10 years through running functional tests. [28:17] What is the most empowering question that patients can ask their practitioner? [32:26] Patterns that Reed sees on lab tests that are correlated to a positive health status. [36:41]The importance of “doing” rather than “taking” when it comes to health. [38:41] Reed shares what he wishes that we would pay more attention to, as a society, that would move the needle globally on our health. [40:28] Why taking radical responsibility for your health is the gateway to freedom. [43:00] Reed Davis' key performance indicators! Today I am joined by my good friend, Melanie Sutherland. Melanie is a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist, an entrepreneur, a mother, and an incredible advocate of women's health.   And what we're talking about today are the things that we wish women knew before they had a baby to optimize their health and optimize their capacity to execute in the world on the other side of motherhood. Traditionally, one of the biggest challenges in healthcare — and especially for those of us who are passionate about upstream preventative health — is that we've been trained by a healthcare system to be reactionary about health. We wait until the problem arises to deal with it. And when it comes to the changes that take place in a woman's body in that prenatal phase and how it influences health on the other side, there are some key elements that you need to be aware of in order to maximize that next phase of life. What is it that every woman needs to know before they have their baby so that their body is in the best possible shape on the other side? This is what Melanie and I are delving into today. This is a powerful and important conversation and I am excited for you to have the opportunity to join in and meet Melanie and hear all of her incredible insights!   Key Takeaways: [1:00] About today's episode! [2:24] Welcoming Melanie to The Entrepology Podcast! [3:05] Melanie shares what makes her uniquely qualified to lead today's discussion.[6:55] Why we need to prioritize ourselves as part of the prenatal experience. [8:56] The common narratives Melanie is seeing with women in her practice in regards to their pelvic floor and rehabilitation. [11:44] What do we need to know in the prenatal phase? What can we be doing to make sure that our body is in the best possible shape? [14:50] What it looks like to prioritize your health before giving birth. [19:52] How stress and burnout play into our health as new moms. [21:48] Melanie highlights some key components and tangible elements of health that women should be aware of that can be massive game-changers on the other side of giving birth. [27:17] The importance of engaging in mindfulness practices. [30:10] The connection between our pelvic floor and our health in general. [31:40] Melanie's KPIs! Today, we're talking about something that I think is fairly confident is universal for most of you who are tuning in — and that is this concept of having a busy brain. How do we shut off the constant firing? The input? The inboxes?! All of these pieces of information that our brains are handling on a daily basis?   To help facilitate this conversation there are a lot of experts that we could have brought on, but I believe there is no better expert suited to this discussion than Dr. Romie Mushtaq! Dr. Romie is an expert on brain health and a triple board-certified neurologist. Dr. Romie breaks down the concept of a “busy brain,” how we can begin to address it, what a “sensory reset” is and how it can lead us down the path of “turning off” our brains, and everything we need to know about the patterns of inflammation in the brain and how they show up.   This is a deeply fascinating conversation and I cannot wait for you all to tune in!   Key Takeaways: [1:21] About today's episode with Dr. Romie Mushtaq! 212: Badass: Why the 1:1 Model of Care is Limiting Our Incomes and Our Impact… and What to Do About It

The Entrepology Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 16, 2021 35:15

Recently, a question I was asked on our Facebook group caught my eye and stopped me in my tracks. The question was: “Is there any hope as an ND in Ontario that I will ever make more than $100,000 a year by playing by the rules?”   What we're going to do in today's episode is break this question down. We're going to uncover the root cause of what's really behind that question. What it means on a big picture level, what it means on the ground, and what the six years of working with clinicians  — helping them to build out their businesses  — has taught me about the model that we are all trying to deploy. We have been taught that a 1:1 model is the best and only way to deliver care. But do patients actually want this model of care?   We're going to focus on the problems, the challenges, and the broken elements of delivering naturopathic care, functional medicine, and strategic care in a preventative context. Even if you are not a clinician, I still highly encourage you to listen in to this episode! We will be exploring this overarching idea of crafting an offer that our customers actually want. This can be applied to any business — but especially with delivering strategic care.   “If you want to change your life, you need to change the way you are thinking about your life. If you want to change your practice, you need to change the way you practice. And if we want to reach more people without sacrificing ourselves in the process, we need to change the way we have always done it.” — Meghan Walker   Key Takeaways: [:43] About today's important episode. [4:00] The reality of the 1:1 model of care… and why it doesn't work for all (or even most) patients. [6:40] My value proposition as a practitioner and how we can help more people not by lowering our prices, but by innovating our offer. [7:40] The smarter, less expensive, more efficient way of delivering information so that we can focus on delivering strategies to our patients. [9:10] The Biopsychosocial model of care. [9:50] The delivery of transformational care vs. transactional care. [10:28] The beautiful thing about stepping into transformational care. [10:57] What we need to acknowledge as 1:1 practitioners: what is our unique selling proposition? What differentiates us from Dr. Google? [12:06] What I've noticed with patients in my own practice that were not ready for or did not want 1:1 care. [13:40] The four stages of readiness that a patient moves through on their journey to health and why we need to be crafting more than one offer (beyond 1:1 care). [17:35] The first stage of readiness: the aspirational stage (and what we can deliver care to these types of individuals). [20:15] The second stage of readiness: the empowerment phase (AKA the DIY phase), and what we can do to assist these patients. [22:32] The third stage of readiness: the strategy phase and what you can do to help them move the needle on their health. [25:08] The fourth and final stage of readiness: the growth phase — and how to keep your patients well (and not returning to your doors one year later with the same symptoms). [27:30] The tremendous shift we have seen over the last year (in the era of COVID-19) on how care is being delivered. [29:17] Why it is so important — more than ever — to have a hybrid practice. [32:05] My final answer to today's question. 2020 was a doozy but the silver lining to it was that it really was this incredible opportunity for all of us to build resilience — resilience both psychologically and physiologically.   But what does resilience really mean? And not as this esoteric, beautiful quote on Instagram; but in real life. What are the tools one would need to deploy in their own life so that when tragedy strikes they have the capacity to handle it on a physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual level? How do we build resilience into our lives so that it's available to us when we need it most? How do we strengthen our resilience in order to come out of situations seeing the silver lining, the lessons, and being able to integrate that experience in a healthy way?   Joining me to answer all of these questions is Dr. Tara Guzzo; a Naturopathic Doctor, friend, and expert on the idea of resilience! In our conversation together, Dr. Tara shares a really compelling story of how her own need to overcome and integrate resilience led to the starting point of building out an incredible approach to resilience in her own practice. As women, we are sitting on a goldmine of capacity but we never have the conversations that unlock our inner goddess. This conversation kick starts the unlocking process by identifying the blocks we women face and puts forth strategies that enable us to embrace our divine feminine.   This is the third time I have invited Dr. Stephanie Estima to be a guest on the show. I continue to ask her because she has a wealth of knowledge regarding women's health and wellness. Dr. Stephanie shares the essential points from her new book, The Betty Body: A Geeky Goddess' Guide to Intuitive Eating, Balanced Hormones, and Transformative Sex. Her unique perspective is supported by all aspects of being female including how women are affected by the stark contrast of attempting to negotiate our way through the patriarchal, male-based systems in place today.   Be sure to tune in for this episode as we dive deep into how women can take control of their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. 207: Body: Everything You Have Ever Wanted to Know About Cannabis But Were Afraid to Ask, Stephanie Massey

The Entrepology Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 9, 2021 56:39

Today we are discussing a subject matter we have never discussed on The Entrepology Podcast before — and I've got to say, I think we covered it super well and really thoroughly!   My guest, Stephanie Massey, is a cancer survivor, a mother, a wife, a writer, and the daughter of a breast cancer survivor. She is also a certified cannabis educator. And what we're talking about today is all things cannabis! How do we use it medicinally? What has been the evolution of it becoming regulated in a Canadian market? How can we leverage it in our every day lives? And how do we move beyond the stigma surrounding it from the war on drugs, and instead, into the mindset of using it as a purposeful tool?   Be sure to tune in for this episode as we unpack cannabis; from the ins and outs of getting started with it, its role on our health and our endocannabinoid system, to how we can incorporate in a greater wellness plan, and the physiology behind how it can impact our mental, physical, and psychosocial health.   Key Takeaways: [1:15] About today's episode with Stephanie Massey. [3:15] Welcoming Stephanie to the podcast! [4:00] Stephanie shares her journey and why cannabis has become such a central part of the work that she does with patients and clinicians. [9:10] Where to start with cannabis when you don't know the resources or language around it. Stephanie also explains the science behind the pain relief cannabis has to offer, and the difference between CBD and hemp. [15:26] Why you should as a clinician should be taking a look at cannabis. [16:44] What science has found about the endocannabinoid system. [19:15] What else has a direct impact on our endocannabinoid system? [20:02] Why would we want to influence our endocannabinoid system? [20:54] Where and how to start if you're curious about exploring cannabis (either recreationally or medicinally). [24:00] The spectrum of influence that cannabis can have in the areas of health and wellness. [28:05] Not a quick fix: why you need to have patience (and curiosity) when it comes to exploring cannabis. [31:49] Cannabis is not the end-all-be-all solution: why you need to incorporate cannabis as part of a greater wellness plan and not only use cannabis. [33:40] The non-medical side of cannabis: why you may want to try it recreationally and how you can navigate this space. [38:02] What makes a more “chilled out” cannabis product vs. a more “energetic” one? How do you find out what works for you? [41:20] The benefit of going with a balanced cannabis product (similar or equal parts THC and CBD). [42:17] The different ways to consume cannabis. [50:13] Stephanie's key performance indicators! My guest today, Lisa Goldberg, is a nutritionist with a specific expertise in understanding the mind-body connection to eating. As a weight loss coach, she speaks a lot about emotional eating in her practice. And today, we are really going to unpack the many different facets and features that we need to address if we're going to start to break the cycle of emotional eating.   For people who have experienced diets on and off their entire lives, this interview is entirely for you. Not only do we talk about the mindset pieces that need to be in place to break the pattern of how we are eating and how we are engaging in our relationship with food, but we also start to break down some of the tactics, techniques, and conversation starters as we engage with our family of origin with respect to how we are eating and how we are choosing to honor ourselves going forward.   Lisa's philosophy is really simple: it's not about having a specific diet to lose weight; it's about addressing your relationship with food.
