Most people have been told at some point that the way to “detox” is to buy a cleanse, live on juice for a week, or chase down some supplement that promises to pull toxins out of the body. But the reality is very different.  In this episode, I unpack what detoxification really looks like, and explain why your body already comes equipped with everything it needs to keep itself clean — provided you don't get in its way. How does it work? Instead of imagining the liver as a sponge full of toxins or assuming your kidneys need a crash reset, it helps to understand how these systems actually function.  The liver runs chemical conversions that neutralize harmful compounds and make them easier to excrete, the kidneys filter waste into urine, and the lungs, skin, and gut provide additional routes to push toxins out. Bobby Kennedy, Jr. seemed on the right track when he launched his “Make America Healthy Again” campaign.Well, not the wacky-quacky part of that agenda, where he teeters off into the prickly thicket of medical voodoo and vaccine bugaboos. But he was onto something fundamentally important when he began to rally public opposition to the arrogance, greed, and willful destructiveness of pesticide peddlers and other Big Food profiteers.As Secretary of Health, Kennedy pushed Trump's “presidential commission on children's health” to take long-overdue action to rein-in those agribusiness contaminators of our food supply and natural resources. He called for limits and outright bans on industrial ag and food processing abuses that grow corporate profits at the expense of healthy kids.Great!But wait – the commission's draft report is now out, and none of Kennedy's most meaningful stuff is in it. None! There's no suggestion, for example, that even the most toxic cancer-causing pesticides should be outlawed, permanently removed from food products and our environment.What happened? Money. While Kennedy was publicly talking a good game, Big Food profiteers were paying a million dollars each to have intimate talks at private dinners with Trump. And when money talks, political integrity walks.Sadly, rather than resigning in protest of Trump's whitewash and rallying America's families to carry this betrayal into next year's elections, Kennedy is hyping the report's empty calories as a people's victory! But he can't make chicken salad out of chicken manure. In today's episode, we're talking about why supposed "healthy" foods can prevent us from losing weight. For example, Siete tortillas or chips are not health-promoting foods. This doesn't mean they are bad, but when we remove everything but the starch component, press it, heat it, sit at our desk and eat it, we can fully expect that the area around our hips and belly button are going to expand. Not to mention these gluten-free starches are essentially devoid of all manner of vitamins, minerals and polyphenols. If wheat berries are a challenge for your body, you will be best served using zucchini for noodles and getting really creative with your baked goods. Today is a great day to check your trades. Many times, in our efforts to get our food lined up in a fashion that promotes a greater level of health, we inadvertently trade toxicity for ultra processed foods. Let me start off by saying there is zero judgement here. While substituting corn syrup loaded yogurt for vanilla yogurt with 28 grams of sugar may not be the best choice, it's at least a sign that you are consciously considering what you are consuming.
