Scientists from around the world gathered in Rome on 2nd May 1922 to agree on a definitive list of 88 constellations, which up until then had been an astronomical free-for-all. The collection of eminent astronomers eventually settled on 42 animals, 29 inanimate objects and 17 humans or mythological characters, which, taken together, offered a complete map of the skies for the very first time. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how different ancient civilisations around the world understood the heavens differently; marvel at the immense contribution of Ancient Greeks to contemporary astronomy; and discuss why Antinous, the boy lover of the Roman emperor Hadrian, is the greatest constellation no longer in use… Further Reading: • ‘10 Constellations that Never Caught On' (Mental Floss, 2010): https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/49454/10-constellations-never-caught • ‘The Constellations' (IAU, 2001): https://www.iau.org/public/themes/constellations/ • ‘Pictures in the sky: the origin and history of the constellations' (The Royal Society, 2014): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZm-QaKqS-Y&t=271s #1920s #Space #Europe #Science This episode first aired in 2023 Love the show? For centuries, eerie tales of sea serpents and monstrous lake creatures have slithered through American folklore, leaving us to wonder if these legendary beasts still lurk beneath the surface.IN THIS EPISODE: When you think of monsters in America, you probably think of Bigfoot in the American Northwest – or perhaps the Chupacabra in the South. Maybe you think of Dogman in the upper Midwest. But people don't typically think of the American lakes and shores, where we have our own collection of monsters and sea serpents. (American Sea Monsters) *** As the saying goes – don't do the crime if you can't do the time. But once in a while the punishment goes far beyond what the crime calls for. (Cruel and Unusual Punishments) *** Marilyn Monroe was found dead of a drug overdose on August 5, 1962. And while the facts of her death are shocking, her troubling childhood wasn't pretty either. We'll look at the life and death of this Hollywood bombshell. In the cold, unforgiving lands where folklore and fear intertwine, tales of werewolves have haunted the imaginations of villagers for centuries. But what happens when these legends step out of the shadows and into real history?IN THIS EPISODE: We're all familiar with the concept of werewolves – they are all over pop culture, movies, television, comic books, novels, and every other medium you could possibly imagine. And while they are considered fictional, or at least in the realm of cryptids, that doesn't mean there aren't true stories of reported werewolves in history. (Real Historic Accounts of Werewolves) *** Just the idea of going to prison is enough to scare people into living a squeaky-clean life, but if you're one of the most dangerous prisoners known to exist, ordinary prison would look like a vacation as compared to life in the Florence ADX Supermax Prison. Pedro Lascuráin set an unbeatable record in presidential speedrunning—serving as Mexico's president for a paltry 45 minutes on 19th February, 1913. His one achievement? To hold the title just long enough to hand it over to the real mastermind behind the coup, General Victoriano Huerta. Huerta didn't last too long either - and eventually even the U.S., which had helped engineer the coup, withdrew their support for him. Meanwhile, Lascuráin retired from politics completely. Unlike most of his contemporaries, who ended up dead, he went back to being a lawyer and lived a long, peaceful life into his 90s. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider why all the paperwork was truly necessary amidst a bloody power grab; discover what happened to Lascuráin's predecessors; and explain why short Presidencies ran in the Lascuráin family… Further Reading: • 'Pedro Lascuráin: The Man Who Was Mexico's President for Only 45 Minutes' (Mental Floss, 2020): https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/635600/pedro-lascurain-45-minute-mexico-president • ‘The world's shortest political careers' (POLITICO, 2020): https://www.politico.eu/article/from-zero-to-hero-to-zero-again-thomas-kemmerich-thuringia-german-politics-declassified/ • ‘Pedro Lascuráin, Mexican President for 45 Minutes' (Mexico Unexplained, 2022): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZ7OZztRxWE Love the show? Groundbreaking police procedural Hill Street Blues first aired on NBC on January 15th, 1981. Back then, TV dramas were mainly mindless entertainment, overshadowed by sitcoms or feel-good fare such as Little House on the Prairie. But, with its richly chaotic blend of overlapping dialogue, gritty realism, and complex characters, Hill St broke the mould. Yet the pilot's test audiences found the unconventional format disorienting—the flawed characters, unresolved storylines, and chaotic setting were too unfamiliar for comfort. Nonetheless, NBC renewed the low-rated show, partly because its small audience was an influential demographic of discerning viewers who valued its intelligence and depth. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how Hill Street Blues revolutionized TV storytelling; consider the outdated societal attitudes on display in their pilot episode; and reveal why Rebecca was prevented from discussing her love for show on the BBC's Mastermind… Further Reading: • ‘Hill Street Blues': The most influential TV show ever (CNN, 2014): https://edition.cnn.com/2014/04/29/showbiz/tv/hill-street-blues-oral-history/index.html • '15 Surprising Facts About Hill Street Blues' (Mental Floss, 2018): https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/73436/15-gripping-facts-about-hill-street-blues • ‘Hill St Blues, Episode 1' (NBC, 1981): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeJEEAtZH_I Love the show? In the final episode of 2024, Amanda is inspired by a conversation with her friend Janelle to explore board games that teach children (and adults) the “winner takes all” aspect of late stage capitalism and/or reinforce the message that success=stuff. We'll take a journey through the history of board games, with a deep dive into the Game of Life. We'll check out the shopping focused games of the 1980s and 90s, including Mall Madness. We will touch on some other games that just seem agonizing for adults to play, like Payday (too real). And we'll explore the origin story of Monopoly, along with all of the other games that (accidentally or otherwise) seem to reinforce dumb ideas like the bootstrap myth.Amanda also talks about what a "no buy year" means to her (and somehow ties into board games, because why not). This episode also includes an audio essay from Eleisha of SHIFT, a refillery in Narberth, PA. From Candyman to Slenderman, we'll look at a few of the most terrifying urban legends that are based on true tales, and we'll look into what it takes to create an urban legend of these magnitudes. (The True Stories Behind Terrifying Urban Legends) *** Unidentified Flying Objects have been around much longer than Roswell. Four centuries ago, before flying vehicles were known to even be possible, ancient Russia had quite a shock when they looked into the sky. (The Robozero Lake UFO of 1663) *** In St. James Episcopal Cemetery in Marietta, Georgia there is a grave that people say began to weep tears of blood when they got too close. (The Halloween Legend of Mary Meinert's Grave) *** A man believes he hears the sound of a car crash – but it shouldn't be impossible from where he lives. (The Falling Saucer) *** We hear of crashed UFOs, flying saucers, or extraterrestrial spacecraft – but… how reliable are the stories we've been told? We'll look at cases after the Roswell incident to see if they hold up. (Where Are The Crashed UFOs?) *** In the Mexican city of Durango there lived a witch who, while stunning beautiful, was grotesquely ugly when it came to her soul and personality – because people never seemed to believe her when she told them of the powers she possessed. And some regretted that. (The Witch of Durango) *** Imagine yourself in the Old West renting a carriage, forgetting to return it the next morning on time, and because of that, having the finger of murder being pointed at you. That's what happened to Hattie Woolsteen. (The Trial of Hattie Woolsteen) *** A cemetery off the western coast of Winnipeg has lost its gravestones, the house that used to be there is gone, but that doesn't mean that souls don't reside there. (A Case of Criminal Neglect) *** In October you can find haunted house attractions on just about every street corner, with a multitude of themes – haunted asylums, ghost hospitals, zombies in cellars, and hell houses. But in 1905, visitors to Coney Island were treated to a different kind of Hell attraction all year long, not just in October. It was a boat ride that, for the cost of one dime, was meant to literally scare the hell out of you. (Coney Island's Hell Gate) *** What type of person raises a young girl, telling everyone she is their daughter, and then years later marries her? That's just part of “The Disturbing Story of Sharon Marshall.” *** A man wakes up one morning to find his entire family has been handcuffed – and the paranormal is to blame! (Ghost Handcuffs Family) *** It has happened to all of us. Something will disappear, and then come back later or relocate to somewhere else before we find it again. It could be car keys or a wallet, or maybe an important paper. Why does this happen? For Platform Distribution: Today on the program, we're proud to present the story behind the most widely recorded murder ballad in American history, the true St. Louis story of "Frankie and Johnny." Johnny's real name was Albert, and though the phrase "He was doin' her wrong” has been the constant refrain, the depiction of Frankie Baker has always been one of a vengeful murderess - rather than murder in self defense - and she fought nearly her entire life to change that narrative. For over 100 years, the song has continued to be recorded with many false depictions, and in this story, you'll hear how it all unfolded and became such a hallmark murder ballad in American music history. __ Support Educational Programming: Tax-Exempt Donations Join the Patreon Community One-time donations: Venmo or PayPal Follow American Songcatcher on Instagram Credits: Ryan Eastridge - Research, Writing Teddy Chipouras - Editing Nicholas Edward Williams - Production, research, editing, recording and distribution References: “A Brief History of St. Louis.” City of St. Louis. The story of the Titanic's sinking is a tragic tale to say the least. But it is one that has entranced the minds of so many. That is why it is still talked about so extensively to this day, AND why so many conspiracy theories exist about what ‘actually' happened on board to cause its sinking. New episode out now! We cover the season two episode of Elementary “Dead Clade Walking”, starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu as a modern-day Holmes and Watson living in New York City. We talk about this version of the duo compared to the books, and how the characters and their dynamic were adapted to become a CBS procedural. We appreciate the show's treatment of addiction and how it affects the characters in short and long term ways, and discuss how in this particular episode the mystery was almost secondary to Sherlock's struggles and growth as a sponsor. We enjoy the realistic and thought-out mannerisms imbued into the characters, think the wardrobe choices are excellent, are relieved by the lack of romance, and love that Sherlock remains a drama queen. Katy brags again about her single semester of geology, Carrie thinks paleontologists can't be attractive or it's suspicious, Maddy makes a great Lord of the Rings joke no one catches, and Mack shares his fossilization grift. We also reveal our family's version of the Irish Goodbye, discuss the nonsense within but occasional necessity for academia, learn about dinosaurs and their relative time within the geological world, and get judgemental about shallot cutting techniques. Listen for more about learning languages, Sue the T. rex, trepanation as a metaphor, John Noble's filmography, cyclops myths, and the legacy of Styrofoam. Enjoy! The hoaxes that you are probably most familiar with today are tied to legends. They are a means to justify an end. Think of the famous grainy photo of the Loch Ness Monster which was falsified to prove the monster's existence. Similarly, think of the sketchy video of Big Foot which was also tampered with to prove that Sasquatch was real. But what of the hoaxes that stand alone? The hoaxes that confuse or mislead even the most intelligent minds. These are where the juicy stories can be found. Today, on Found Objects, I share a story or two (or several lol) about hoaxes that will make you stop in your tracks and consider the validity of even the most seemingly legitimate tales. IN THIS EPISODE: A 1930s art deco swimming pool is not the first place you think of when people mention the most haunted places in the country. So why is this 85-year-old building bursting at the seams with spirits and specters? The answer to that is not any easy one to give. (The Haunted Smethwick Baths) *** They look strange, there's a weird otherworldliness to them, when encountered people often find the've lost hours of time with no memory, and the beings are often known to abduct people in the middle of the night. It sounds like I'm describing alien abduction – but the same, all of it, can also be said of fairie folk in European legend. Is it possible there is a connection? Could the mythical fairies of old actually be the extraterrestrials we tell stories about today? (The Extraterrestrials Want Twinkies) *** Elsie Eiler pays taxes... to herself. She grants her own liquor license to herself for the tavern she owns – which is possible when you are the mayor… and bartender… and law enforcement, and even the librarian. You see, Elsie Eiler is the sole resident of Monowi, Nebraska – but that doesn't mean she's alone. (Monowi, Nebraska – Population One) *** They don't try for a perfect likeness. They have to suppress their creativity. They even find help from birds nests. We'll look at some of the trade secrets used by forensic artists. Although they started as friends, they soon turned bitter enemies, competing against one another for 20 years to find and name the most fossils. This duel, often dubbed the “bone wars” led to espionage, sabotage, scandal, backstabbing, name calling, bribery, theft, and the throwing of literal rocks. It also led to a lot of mistakes made in haste. But, at the end of the day, it led to the discovery of 130 dinosaur species including Stegosaurus, Triceratops, Allosaurus, Apatosaurus (AKA Brontosaurus… I'll explain in the episode!), and more. Rerun: he Production Code Administration - which policed standards of decency on all US cinema releases for twenty years - was established on 13th June, 1934, following a patch of unconvincing Hollywood self-censorship. ‘Excessive or lustful kissing' and ‘sex perversion' were no longer allowed - but nor was ‘depictions of safe-cracking', ‘childbirth,' and ‘dynamiting'. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider whether the strict rules enforced by the code actively inspired the classic ‘golden era' movies that are still regarded with nostalgia today; reveal the anti-semitism behind the policy; and remind us of the pre-code movies, starring the likes of Jimmy Cagney and Mae West, that remain “raunchy - for now”... IN THIS EPISODE: When you think of monsters in America, you probably think of Bigfoot in the American Northwest – or perhaps the Chupacabra in the South. We're all familiar with the concept of werewolves – they are all over pop culture, movies, television, comic books, novels, and every other medium you could possibly imagine. Leaded gasoline could not have become a universally-used commercial product without an enforcer. Someone who was dedicated to protecting the status quo position that leaded gasoline was safe to use and not a threat to the general public. And that enforcer was named Dr. Robert Kehoe. In 1925 he was appointed chief medical consultant of the Ethyl Corporation and remained in the post until his retirement in 1958. Though he continued to fight for leaded gasoline after that and he lived until the 1990s. Thomas Midgley, Jr. might be the one responsible for inventing leaded gasoline. But Robert Kehoe is the one responsible for protecting industry from uncomfortable questions about lead so that it could be used as long and widely as it was. Until the 1960s, the only studies of the use of tetraethyl lead were funded by the lead, gas, and car industries and carried out by Robert Kehoe. REFERENCES Brown, Oliver W. The 1922 horror classic "Nosferatu" still turns up, on TV and on college campuses every Halloween. And it'll likely show up again somewhere this year as well. In this episode we'll look at how Nosferatu is terrifyingly relevant even still today, the controversial making of the film – and the lawsuit by Bram Stoker's wife, how the director of the film was involved in the occult… and how you would not have wanted to miss the film's premiere which was an unforgettable, epic event all by itself. That and a whole lot more about 1922's Nosferatu, on this episode of Weird Darkness. *** (Originally aired April 28, 2021)SOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…“The Message Nosferatu Has For Us Today” by Jim Beckerman for NorthJersey.com:https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/4h966w3w“The True Story Behind Nosferatu” by Sam Markus for Grunge.com: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/zupyynu7“Other Nosferatu Facts” by Mark Mancini for Mental Floss: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/zueums9f, and William Burns for Horror News Network: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/r6xbudh4= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =Weird Darkness theme by Alibi Music Library.
