In the spirit of celebrating my first Christmas as a Christian, this week is the perfect time to share a delightful conversation I had with Chris Legg. As both a licensed professional counselor and the lead pastor of a church, Chris has a rare combination of expertise he describes as being "a bit of a unicorn." Chris is also the founding owner and clinical director of Alethia Family Counseling Center, which now operates six locations across Texas with thirty therapists on staff. We explore the intersection of faith and psychology, discussing how secular therapy approaches to self-esteem fall short without a spiritual foundation. Chris challenges the contemporary affirmation-based therapy model, arguing that true humility comes from an accurate understanding of who we are in light of who God says we are. We discuss the persistent human tendency toward self-deception, examining why building identity solely on ourselves is fundamentally delusional—and what happens when we recognize ourselves as treasure through God's eyes instead. Our conversation ventures into controversial territory, including the relationship between Christianity and psychedelics, where Chris explains his measured "five out of ten" stance. He shares clinical examples of clients whose severe addictions were transformed through professional psychedelic-assisted treatment, while also emphasizing the need for Christian voices to remain engaged in this conversation rather than retreating into reflexive rejection. We discuss the theology of the Father, father wounds, and how childhood experiences shape our intuition of God. We examine prayer through the lens of the persistent widow and the friend at midnight, exploring what it means to approach God boldly as his children rather than with practiced piety. Chris shares insights on marriage, sacrifice, and how his son co-authored their book "Sex and Marriage" after witnessing the congruence between his father's theology and his treatment of his mother. Finally, we touch on near-death experiences, spiritual integration, and the beautiful, ongoing process of faith deconstruction and reconstruction that characterizes a lifetime of spiritual growth.Pastor Chris Legg, LPCs, and his wife Ginger have been living out the parable of God's love for His people since 1993 and have been blessed with five great kids. He is the Lead Pastor at South Spring Baptist Church in Tyler, TX and is also the founding owner and clinical director of Alethia Family Counseling Center, which offers training, counseling, speaking and business consulting in several locations in Texas. He and his son, Mark, are the authors of the book Sex and Marriage, which is intended to restore to marriages the power God intended. The editors use an antique slur (sadly surging back to popularity) to describe a contributor's mentally handicapped sister, but let's not focus on that when the piece -- especially the photos it's built around -- is thoughtful and sensitive. Then, we can move on to why and how to dump a guy; no, taking you to the library isn't one of the reasons, though it does come up. Mike reports from the McDonald's training institute Hamburger University, where the sight of students and instructors actually caring about their careers in customer service alarms his apathetic Gen-X sensibilities. On The Road goes to Cleveland; female staffers' brothers confess the ways they tortured them as kids; a teen mother glosses over a LOT of what Happened To her; and more! Narcissistic relationships often feel confusing, unpredictable, and emotionally disorienting but beneath the surface, there is a psychological structure shaping those patterns. In this deeply insightful conversation, Dr. Anthony Mazzella unpacks the hidden dynamics that drive narcissistic behavior and explains why certain reactions, defenses, and emotional shifts happen long before conflict even appears. Through real examples and grounded psychodynamic insight, he reveals how early emotional environments shape self-esteem regulation and why moments of collapse, defensiveness, withdrawal, or anger can emerge so quickly. This episode invites listeners to see these patterns with more clarity and less self-blame, offering a compassionate understanding of what's really happening inside the narcissistic mind. Together, we explore how these dynamics affect partners, friends, colleagues, and even family members and what it looks like to hold your voice, maintain emotional boundaries, and stay rooted in your own truth in relationships where your reality may be dismissed or distorted. Dr. Mazzella also walks through how identity, vulnerability, projection, and unmet emotional needs shape the relational dance, and why recognizing these patterns is the first step toward reclaiming your sense of self. You'll leave with a deeper grasp of the emotional mechanisms at play, a clearer understanding of your own defense responses, and a renewed sense of agency in navigating complex relationships with nuance and strength.Want to start your own podcast, grow your show, or get featured as a guest? I CAN ONLY TRY TO IMAGINE THE SHOCK AND SURPRISE THAT DR. DALEO'S PARENT'S FELT WHEN THEIR DAUGHTER'S SCHOOL DECLARED HER "MENTALLY RETARDED" BASED ON TEST RESULTS FROM RECENT TESTS. THANK GOODNESS HER MOM AND DAD HAD THE WHERE WITH ALL, FINANCIAL ABILITY AND GOOD COMMON SENSE TO HAVE HER TESTED BY A PROFESSIONAL. DR. ROXIE WAS THEN OFFICIALLY DIAGNOSED AS BEING DYSLEXIC. ACCORDING TO THE OXFORD LANGUAGES DICTIONARY, THIS IS THEIR DEFINITION OF DYSLEXIA-"a condition of neurodevelopmental origin that mainly affects the ease with which a person reads, writes, and spells, typically recognized as a specific learning disorder in children." DR. ROXIE EXPLAINS HOW "THIS EVENT CAUSED SO MUCH ANXIETY. IF NOT FOR MY MOTHER AND FATHER, ROXANNE WOULD HAVE BEEN PUT IN A SPECIAL SCHOOL OR WORSE, SHE WOULD HAVE GOTTEN LOST IN THE SHUFFLE. WITH AN INCREDIBLE WILL TO LEARN AND HER PARENTS ENCOURAGEMENT, "THEY HELPED THEIR DAUGHTER GROW WITH A COMMITMENT NOT ONLY FOR SELF DISCOVERY BUT ALSO USE OF HER OWN AGENCY." THEY TAUGHT THEIR DAUGHTER TO USE MENTAL SKILLS OF VISIONING AND TAUGHT HER HOW TO ACHIEVE HER GOALS IN LIFE."SHE WAS COMPLETELY PRESENT TO EACH AND EVERYONE OF US," REFERRING TO HERSELF AND HER TWO SIBLINGS. "SHE KNEW TO TAKE US ONE ON ONE AND NOT TOGETHER," DR ROXIE EXPLAINS. HER MOM CALLED IT "LOVING TIME."THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO THIS STORY. ANNE, MY GUEST'S MOTHER ALLOWED HER DAUGHTER TO EXPERIENCE LIFE WITH HER EDUCATIONAL STRUGGLES, YET ALL THE LESSONS HER MOTHER TAUGHT HER, DR. DALEO IS NOW HELPING MANY MANY CHILDREN EXPERIENCING SIMILAR LEARNING DIFFICULTIES. DR. DALEO HAD A VERY LOVING AND POWERFUL RELATIONSHIP WITH HER MOTHER. ANN WAS AN ARTIST, A SEAMSTRESS AND A WONDERFUL TEACHER. ANOTHER ONE OF HER FAVORITE SAYINGS WAS " A THING DONE BY HALF IS NEVER DONE RIGHT. FINISH WHAT YOU START WITH ALL OF YOUR MIGHT."ROXANNE AND I DISCUSS ALTERNATIVE PRACTICES AND TECHNIQUES FOR LEARNING AND FINDING BALANCE IN LIFE FOR CHILDREN, INCLUDING MEDITATION, VISUALIZATION, ETC.THERE IS SO MUCH MORE RELATABLE INFORMATION TO THIS STORY. A MOTHER WHO WAS ABLE TO STAY HOME AND CARVE OUT ONE-ON-ONE TIME WITH HER DAUGHTERS. AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM DR DALEO IS "THAT IF YOU FAIL AT SOMETHING AND TRY AGAIN, IT DOESN'T MEAN YOU SHOULD ABANDON IT. THIS SENSE OF FORTITUDE AND STICK-TO-ITIVENESS IS A LOST ART."NOTES FROM DR. DALEO PhD:I help children and parents reduce anxiety naturally using expressive arts, mind-body tools, and evidence-based stress-reduction practices. As a Harvard-trained specialist with over 25 years of experience, my work bridges psychology, expressive arts, and integrative wellness.
