David Plotz talks with journalist Gabriel Sherman about his new book Bonfire of the Murdochs: How the Epic Fight to Control the Last Great Media Dynasty Broke a Family—and the World. Sherman, who also wrote the bestselling biography of Fox News chief Roger Ailes, spent 15 years reporting on the Murdoch empire. In this book he turns his lens on the family itself — the rivalries, the wounds, and the secret Nevada courtroom battle that finally forced Rupert's hand.Sherman sketches each of the three main Murdoch children: the shrewd and overlooked Elisabeth, the conservative golden child Lachlan, and the restless, brittle James. He explains how Rupert pitted each of his children against each other to consolidate his own power. He and Plotz explore the parallels between the Murdoch and Trump dynasties, debate whether a James-led Fox News could ever have been tethered to reality, and ask what happens to the empire once Rupert is gone. John Luke and Zach respond to sharp criticism, pushing back on a mindset that shuts down honest questions instead of engaging them. Al walks through the historical events that set the stage for Christianity's explosion onto the world scene, including Nero's brutal persecution of Jesus' followers. Meanwhile, Christian digs into the cultural significance of the gymnasium and how it revealed the tension between Greek and Jewish ways of life. Today's conversation is about Lessons 3 of Ancient Christianity taught by visiting Hillsdale Professor of History Kenneth Calvert. Take the course with us at no cost to you! Sign up at http://unashamedforhillsdale.com/. More about Ancient Christianity: Christ entered the world during the reign of Caesar Augustus. The tensions between Christianity and the Roman Empire shaped the daily practice of the Christian faith and led many Romans to distrust and persecute the early Christians. But Christianity also benefitted from the Roman world. And when Rome collapsed in the West, Christianity provided the hope for preserving civilization. In this free, eleven-lecture course, Professor Kenneth Calvert will explore: How the Jewish, Greek, and Roman cultures all contributed to preparing the world to hear the Gospel. Why many Romans distrusted and persecuted the early Christians. The inspiring stories of Christ, His apostles, and faithful ones throughout the first four centuries of Christianity. The arguments of key early Christian apologists—Ignatius, Irenaeus, Justin, Athanasius, and more—who defended and defined the Christian faith amidst the animosity of the Roman world. The conversion of Constantine and how he brought stability to Rome, and how the rivalry between his sons almost returned Rome to paganism. How Augustine's writings helped preserve the message of Christianity during the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West. You will discover the uncertainties, trials, and triumphs of the earliest Christians as they confronted controversies within the faith and persecutions from outside it. Join us today to discover the improbable and miraculous story of Christianity. Healing In Men (Part 2) w/ Dr. John Bishop

    Restore The Glory Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 18, 2026 63:40

This week, Jake and Bob welcome Dr. John Bishop, founder of FORGE, to continue their series on healing in men. John shares his perspective on why so many men today lack a clear picture of what it means to be a good man. He begins with the story of Adam, uncovering God's original design for masculinity—one rooted in work, responsibility, and the courage to engage in the world and the people entrusted to him. From there, he describes the wounds men experience from Adam's fall: fear, shame, and the tendency for men to withdraw, hide, or dominate rather than love. Yet, with Jesus Christ as a model, whose life and sacrifice reveal the true strength of a man, they reflect on how men can recover a living image of faithful, engaged, and restored masculinity.   Key Points: There is a widespread struggle to engage men in the life of the Church. A central problem facing men today is the lack of a clear and compelling picture of what it means to be a good man. Without strong masculine examples in families, churches, and schools, many men turn to cultural voices that offer distorted visions of masculinity. Adam is the first image of authentic masculinity and reveals a masculine inclination towards responsibility and stewardship. The Fall reveals a core masculine temptation: disengagement, as Adam remains passive when evil enters the garden. Fear and shame often drive men to withdraw emotionally or hide behind work, distractions, or performance. True masculinity requires engagement with both the external world and the interior life of relationships. Jesus Christ, the New Adam, reveals the ultimate image of masculinity through sacrificial love and radical trust in the Father. Fathers ultimately help their sons become men by guiding them toward the deeper truth that their identity is rooted in being beloved sons of God.   Resources: John's Ministry: Forge New Adam: God's Plan for Men by Dr. John Bishop   Chapters: 00:00 Introduction 07:22 Seeing Our Identity as Son, Brother, Bridegroom, and Father 12:17 What's Going On with Men in Our Current Age? 25:07 Adam: The First Image of Masculinity 35:44 Engaging with the World as a Man 47:38 Learning to Trust the Creator of the Universe   Connect with Restore the Glory:  Instagram: @restoretheglorypodcast  Twitter: @RestoreGloryPod Facebook: Restore the Glory Podcast   Never miss out on an episode by hitting the subscribe button right now! Mother Mary's Hopeful Message for Chaotic Times: March 2026

If you have been feeling unsettled and concerned about these chaotic times we are living in, you are not alone! Rather than focus on what the 'experts' say about these times, let's connect with Mother Mary's wisdom for guidance and comfort! In this episode, I share a channeled message from Mother Mary about how to navigate these times, and how She is asking us to respond. I will be offering a monthly message from Mother Mary right here on the podcast every month, and this is the very first one. I would love to hear your feedback about this idea! Ps- if you want to receive personal guidance and insight from Mother Mary, click here to schedule a session.   Key Learnings: 1) Mother Mary knows we are living in chaotic times, and that is why She is encouraging us, as ambassadors of hope, to take extra care of our own energy. We can only help others when we have taken care of ourselves first. 2) Reach out to your friends, family and neighbors during this time. This is where your impact is most deeply felt and deeply needed. Let go of over-worrying about the big picture issues that you are in no position to influence, and instead be a source of light, love and hope right where you are. 3) The archetype of King Herod is present on the planet in several countries. But that means that the energy of Christ is also present. Take heart and know that the system of hierarchy, of looking to institutions to guide us, is falling away. Just as King Herod's reign did not last, neither will these modern day Herods last. Connect with your St. Elizabeth, strengthen yourself and offer love and support to those who are open to receive it. "Reach out to your friends, family and neighbors during this chaotic time. That is where your impact is most deeply felt and needed." Grief doesn't wait for loss to arrive. Sometimes it shows up early — sitting beside you while someone you love is still right there. That's anticipatory grief, and if you've ever felt your mind drift to a future without someone while they're still in the room, you already know it. In this episode of Joy Lab, Dr. Henry Emmons and Dr. Aimee Prasek explore the Eighth Gate of Grief: the grief, stress, anxiety, and dread that can accompany an expected loss — whether that's a terminal diagnosis, a parent's cognitive decline, a marriage ending, or even broader fears about the world your kids will inherit. Anticipatory grief can be a mentally and emotionally exhausting experience, and it doesn't get nearly enough airtime in conversations about mental health. Importantly, this episode won't tell you how to stop anticipatory grief — because you shouldn't. Research suggests it can actually support healing. What it will give you: science-backed tools for staying present, a simple framework for saying what matters most before it's too late, and honest guidance on sustaining yourself through anticipatory grief. If anxiety, depression, or stress around future loss is weighing on you — or someone you love — this one's for you. This episode is part of a 10-part series on grief. You can jump in here and circle back to Episode 248 when you're ready.   p.s. Find a Simple Joy practice for this episode right here at our blog.   About: The Joy Lab Podcast is an Ambie-nominated podcast that blends science and soul to help you cope better with stress, ease anxiety, and uplift mood. I forgive you. Thank you. I love you. [17:15] — Why saying these things — even imperfectly — creates completion and reduces regret [19:15] — The gift anticipatory grief offers that sudden loss cannot: the chance to share grief with someone, say the four things, have the conversation together [20:00] — Tending to your own wellbeing during anticipatory grief; checking your energy and nourishment levels; you have to take breaks, let people help, do nourishing things for yourself — it's not selfish, it's sustainable [21:45] — Small ways to refuel: a walk, a phone call, sitting outside, noticing breath; don't wait until you're depleted — build it in now; Letting people support you; they often want to help but don't know how — be specific; "Can you bring dinner Tuesday? Can you sit with her while I go to the store?" [22:30] — Anticipatory grief is a marathon, not a sprint; pace yourself; stepping back to breathe and enjoy lightness is not denial — it's wisdom [23:30] — Closing quote from Rilke: "Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final."   Sources and Notes for this full grief series: Joy Lab Program: Take the next leap in your wellbeing journey with step-by-step practices to help you build and maintain the elements of joy in your life.  Grief Series: The Grief Series: The Wholeness of Being Human [part 1, ep 248] Everything We Love, We Will Lose: Navigating the First Gate of Grief[part 2, ep 249] Welcoming Back the Parts of You That Have Not Known Love [part 3, ep 250] Why You Can't Escape the Sorrows of the World (and why that's a good thing) [part 4, ep 251] Born to Belong: Grieving What Should Have Been There From the Start [part 5, ep 252] Breaking the Cycle: Ancestral Grief, Epigenetics, and the Power to Change Your Legacy [part 6, ep 253] How Facing the Harm You've Done Can Set You Free [part 7, ep 254] How the World's Pain Enters Your Body and What to Do Next [part 8, ep 255] Related Episodes: Savoring the Present and Overcoming FOBO (it's kinda like FOMO...) The World Athletics Indoor Championships descend on Toruń, Poland this weekend. Here's your event-by-event preview via Chris Chavez and Preet Majithia.- Men's 60m: Defending champion Jeremiah Azu faces the deepest field in recent memory, led by American Jordan Anthony (world list leader, 6.43) and Jamaica's Kishane Thompson (6.46).- Women's 60m: Julien Alfred vs. Zaynab Dosso, both at 6.99 and both in career form. Alfred seeks history as a two-time world indoor champion; Dosso has silver and bronze but never gold.- Men's 60m hurdles: A three-way tie at 7.37 between Poland's unbeaten home favorite Jakub Szymański and Americans Dylan Beard and Trey Cunningham, with three-time defending champion Grant Holloway absent for the first time in years.- Women's 60m hurdles: Devynne Charlton can become the first woman to win three consecutive world indoor titles in the event, having won in Glasgow and Nanjing. Swiss world champion Ditaji Kambundji has been just 0.01 behind her twice this season.- Men's 400m: Two of the three fastest short-track 400m runners ever, Khaleb McRae (world record pending, 44.52) and Christopher Morales Williams (44.49 all-time best, unratified), meet in a new split-final format using only lanes 3 to 6.- Women's 400m: Several top seeds are absent, opening the door wide for Norway's Henriette Jæger and the Netherlands' Lieke Klaver, who beat Jæger at last year's European Indoors.- Men's 800m: Belgium's Eliott Crestan enters as the top seed chasing history, but American teenager Cooper Lutkenhaus, just 17, set a world U20 short-track record of 1:44.03 last month and could become the youngest men's 800m medalist in World Indoor Championships history.- Women's 800m: Keely Hodgkinson is the story of the meet. The British Olympic champion broke a 24-year-old world record last month, running 1:54.87 on the very day she was born. Three injuries have kept her from the World Indoors. She finally arrives healthy and dangerous.- Men's 1500m: World champion Isaac Nader looks to finally convert after two consecutive fourth-place finishes, chasing Portugal's first title here since 2001. Dutch 800m specialist Sam Chapple brings a dangerous finishing kick.- Women's 1500m: Georgia Hunter Bell leads a deep field stacked against Ethiopia's three-athlete squad, with Nikki Hiltz's big kick a wildcard in the final lap.- Men's 3000m: The entire Paris Olympic 1500m podium, Cole Hocker, Josh Kerr, and Yared Nuguse, races together, making this arguably the meet's marquee event.- Women's 3000m: Freweyni Hailu is chasing a third straight world indoor distance title, representing a broader Ethiopian dynasty that has won 10 of the last 12 world indoor 3000m crowns.____________Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez + Preet Majithia | @preet_athleticsProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Olipop's Tropical Punch tastes like a vacation in a can. It represents a fundamental shift in how intelligence is created, scaled, and applied inside organizations. Leaders who treat AI as incremental technology risk missing the much larger transformation underway.Brown explains why he believes we are entering an “intelligence age,” comparable in scope to the Industrial Revolution, but unfolding at a dramatically faster pace. As the cost of intelligence approaches zero, organizations will face new strategic choices about workforce design, value creation, leadership identity, and ethical responsibility. These choices, Brown argues, cannot be delegated or delayed without consequence.Throughout the episode, Mahan challenges Brown to bridge theory and practice. They explore real organizational examples, from AI agents working alongside humans to scientific breakthroughs like AlphaFold, and examine how leaders can shift from efficiency-driven thinking toward value creation, judgment, and human amplification. This is not a conversation about tools or trends. It is a candid discussion about leadership responsibility in a period of accelerated change, and what CEOs and senior executives must rethink now to ensure their organizations remain relevant, resilient, and human-centered.Actionable TakeawaysYou'll learn why delaying AI decisions is itself a leadership choice, and how waiting for clarity can quietly erode organizational value.Hear how the “intelligence age” differs from previous technology shifts, and why its speed changes the role of senior leadership. You'll learn why AI should be viewed as a digital workforce, not just software, and what that means for strategy, structure, and accountability.Hear how leaders must shift from being the source of answers to guiding exploration, judgment, and learning in uncertain conditions. You'll learn why cost-cutting is the weakest use of AI, and where leaders should instead focus to create new value.Hear how AI changes the relevance of experience, narrowing gaps while raising expectations for judgment and insight. You'll learn why ethics, bias, and responsibility do not belong to algorithms, but remain firmly in the domain of leadership.Hear how AI can amplify human capability rather than replace it, when leaders design work intentionally.Connect with Steve BrownSteve Brown Website Steve Brown LinkedInThe AI Ultimatum: Preparing for a World of Intelligent Machines and Radical TransformationConnect with Mahan Tavakoli: Mahan Tavakoli Website Mahan Tavakoli on LinkedIn Partnering Leadership Website

In this laugh-inducing, hair-raising, and educational episode of Wow in the World, Mindy, Guy Raz, and the WOW crew learn about a new way to help strengthen teeth!Dennis reveals his brand-new haircut - a perfectly round, helmet-shaped hairstyle hardened with hair gel. While the crew struggles to compliment the new ‘do, the conversation quickly spirals into unexpected territory when Thomas Fingerling and Gramma G-Force insist that Dennis made a terrible mistake by throwing away his hair clippings… According to them, everyone knows hair clippings should be placed under your pillow for the mysterious “Hairy Fairy,” who sneaks in through the keyhole to collect them. If the hair is strong, you might get a prize - maybe even a yacht. If it's weak? Expect a boiled egg.But amid the bonkerballs chatter, Mindy realizes something: the Hairy Fairy's strange obsession with hair might actually connect to real science. She shares an incredible new study from scientists at King's College London showing that keratin - the protein that makes up our hair and nails - could someday help repair damaged tooth enamel. Since enamel is the hardest material in the human body, but can't grow back once it wears away, researchers have been searching for ways to rebuild or strengthen it. Their discovery? When keratin interacts with minerals in saliva, it can help form a protective crystal coating on teeth! This coating could potentially strengthen enamel and even outperform the plastic resin materials dentists currently use - making teeth far more resistant to cavities. In the future, keratin from hair could be added to toothpaste, mouthwash, or dental treatments to protect smiles everywhere! With rollerblades, hair helmets, imaginary creatures, and cutting-edge dental research all colliding in one hilarious adventure, this episode proves that even a haircut can lead to jaw-dropping science.
