And while that step might be a bit scary for some, we all get past it – we have to. But what if there is something truly to be afraid of at your graduation? Like the possibility of being murdered? (Murdered During Graduation) *** Joseph McKinnon strangled his girlfriend Patricia Dent, then died while trying to bury her body in their garden. (Killed By Karma) *** When you die, do you know that you are dead? A new study says that maybe… yes. You might still be conscious enough to know you are dead even after your body ceases to live. But for how long? (When You Die, You Are Conscious Long Enough To Know It) *** The term Zodiac in true crime circles invokes images of serial murder, cryptograms and bragging letters in and around San Francisco. But the California Zodiac is not the only Zodiac out there. Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: May, 2022This episode of Weird Darkness, hosted by Darren Marlar, moves from a string of graduation celebrations that ended in murder to a comparison of the Korean and California Zodiac killers, a scientific claim that human consciousness lingers briefly after death, and the case of a South Carolina man who died burying the girlfriend he had just strangled. It opens with a survey of graduation celebrations turned deadly, beginning with the May 2020 party in southwest Indiana where 47-year-old William Baker carried a .30-06 rifle into a shed and shot 18-year-old South Dearborn High School graduate Paycin Kritlow in the back, claiming his daughter had been raped even though she and her friends denied any assault occurred, a killing that earned Baker a 55-year sentence in November 2021. The segment moves through Menhaz Zaman, a 24-year-old outside Toronto who murdered his father, mother, sister, and grandmother with a crowbar-like weapon and a knife the day before a York University graduation he had faked after failing out of Seneca College; the June 2020 shooting of 19-year-old Tyana Johnson in a Bronx park while her friend Ahamad Branch worked as the DJ; and the June 2017 ambush of Maryland teenagers Shadi Adi Najjar and Artem Ziberov, shot thirty times between them by a group who had searched online for a song called "I Kill for My Family" and killed over a stolen handful of marijuana. Other cases stretch across Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Ohio, South Carolina, and Louisiana, including 18-year-old Hailey Deickman, who died days before her high school graduation after Franklin Senfles sold her fentanyl she believed was oxycodone. From there, the show sets two very different Zodiac cases side by side. The first is the Korean "Zodiac Killer," the Hwaseong murders that began on September 15th, 1986 with the rape and strangling of 71-year-old Lee Wan-im and continued as women were strangled with their own clothing on dark rural roads, a case that drew a manhunt of more than 21,000 suspects and sent a disabled man named Yoon Sung-yeo to prison on a coerced confession, until DNA identified Lee Choon-jae in 2019, a man already jailed since 1995 who confessed to 14 murders and 30 rapes and had escaped suspicion because police wrongly believed the killer's blood was type B rather than his actual type O. Darren places that against the California Zodiac, who killed at least five people around San Francisco between 1968 and 1971, taunted newspapers with cryptograms and threats against schoolchildren, and drew suspicion onto former schoolteacher Arthur Leigh Allen without ever being caught. The segment weighs how each case reached the screen, contrasting Bong Joon-ho's 2003 film Memories of Murder, made while the Korean killer was still unknown, with David Fincher's 2007 Zodiac, built on Robert Graysmith's books, and argues that a competent investigation on either continent might have swapped the outcomes.Next, the episode turns to research suggesting that human consciousness may briefly outlast the body. Dr. Sam Parnia, director of critical care and resuscitation research at NYU Langone in New York City, describes cardiac-arrest patients who were revived and could recall specific conversations and the actions of the doctors and nurses working to save them, and his work points to conscious awareness continuing for as long as three minutes after the heart stops even though the brain's electrical activity typically flatlines within twenty to thirty seconds. The segment adds microbiologist Peter Noble of the University of Washington, whose studies on mice and zebrafish found certain genes increasing in activity in the hours after death, and it frames both findings as evidence that cells shut down gradually rather than switching instantly from living to dead. The episode closes with the death of Joseph McKinnon in Trenton, South Carolina, whom deputies first found lying unresponsive in his yard, dead of a heart attack he suffered while filling in a pit a neighbor believed was meant for a new water feature. When investigators could not locate McKinnon's girlfriend, 65-year-old Patricia Dent, and learned she had missed her shift at the Mount Vintage Golf Club, they dug into the pit and uncovered black garbage bags holding her bound, bruised, and strangled body. Edgefield County Sheriff Jody Rowland and Coroner David Burnett concluded that McKinnon had attacked and choked Dent inside their home, wrapped her, and collapsed from cardiac arrest as he covered her over, and her twin sister Pamela Briggs spoke of her grief while police noted the couple had no known history of domestic violence, meaning that had McKinnon lived, Dent might simply have vanished.

In June 1974, seven-year-old Michael “Mickey” David Niles was asleep in his family's Abilene home when an intruder entered. Mickey was stabbed once through the heart. His thirteen-year-old sister, Kelly, was stabbed eight times in the back but survived and managed to call for help. Their six-year-old brother Robbie slept through the attack.Police found no obvious signs of forced entry and no motive. Detectives recovered blood and a latent fingerprint from inside the house, but neither led them to the killer. Kelly provided a description of the man who assaulted her and took the life of her brother, and the Abilene Police pursued leads across Texas and beyond, questioned numerous people, and considered whether Mickey's murder could be connected to other baffling Abilene killings. Nothing produced an arrest, and the case eventually went cold.In 1994, investigators entered the fingerprint into a database, but there was no immediate match. Ten years later, a DWI arrest in San Antonio finally connected the print to a suspect who had been stationed at Dyess Air Force Base at the time of Mickey's murder. DNA testing also linked the man.More than thirty years after Mickey's death, the suspect pleaded guilty and received a forty-year prison sentence.Whether he was responsible for any other Abilene murders remains unknown. This week we head to the suburbs—or at least what's left of them—to talk about The End of Oak Street (2026), the new sci-fi survival thriller from It Follows director David Robert Mitchell. Starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, the film follows the Platt family after a mysterious cosmic event rips their entire neighborhood out of suburbia and drops it somewhere very, very unexpected. We talk about the movie's wild combination of 1980s nostalgia, family drama, dinosaurs, sci-fi mystery, and survival horror, as well as Mitchell's playful nods to classic Spielberg-era adventure movies. With its strange premise and surprisingly heartfelt story, The End of Oak Street is a pretty big departure from the director's earlier horror work—but it still carries some of that eerie, mysterious DNA. We also get into the film's visual effects, performances, action sequences, and whether the ambitious premise sticks the landing. Is this the next great suburban creature feature, or does the mystery get a little lost along the way?   Follow Us on Instagram and TikTok: @horrorhourwiththehannas   Music by Aries Beats - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPpnxLYrzVA   #horrorpodcast #horrormovies #horrorfilm #scarymovie #scarymovies #scarymoviesbelike #horrortok #horrorhour #behindthescenes #howscary #moviereview #filmreview #morbidpodcast #creepypodcast #filmtok #moviesummary #horrorpodcast #horrormovies #horrorfilm #scarymovie #scarymovies #scarymoviesbelike #horrortok #horrorhour #behindthescenes #howscary #moviereview #filmreview #morbidpodcast #creepypodcast #moviesummary #movieexplained #scary #horror #movie #film #behindthescenes #behindthescene #filming #moviefacts #halloween #filmpodcast #horrorfilmanalysis #filmpodcast #horrorgenre #horrorfilmanalysis #newrelease #horrormoviepodcast #theendofoakstreet #oakstreet

Jeff Stanfield and Andy Shaver are joined by Dr. Philip Lavretsky, a professor at UTEP and the researcher leading the charge in Duck DNA research and, more recently, Wild Turkey DNA research. They discuss the incredible breakthroughs that have come from studying duck DNA, much of which has been made possible by waterfowl hunters across the country submitting duck samples for testing. Dr. Lavretsky explains what researchers have learned about North America's duck populations and how this research is changing our understanding of waterfowl. The conversation then turns to wild turkey genetics, where some of the discoveries have been just as surprising. Dr. Lavretsky shares what researchers are learning about wild turkey populations, the challenges they have faced over the past several decades, and some of the factors that could be contributing to declining turkey numbers in parts of the country. The research is also expanding. This year, the team plans to begin collecting and studying goose DNA, with the goal of developing a clearer picture of America's goose populations and how they are changing over time.

What if food is doing far more than providing calories, protein, carbohydrates, and fat? What if every bite is actually delivering information to your genes, cells, microbiome, and biological systems? In this fascinating solo episode, Darin challenges the century-old idea of viewing food simply as fuel and explores what happens when we begin seeing food as biological information. From carrots resembling eyes and walnuts resembling brains to nutrigenomics, plant compounds, biophotons, structured water, living enzymes, and the microbiome, Darin dives into the hidden layers of food that never appear on a nutrition label. He explores established research alongside emerging and controversial areas of science, explaining why the freshness, color, diversity, and wholeness of what we eat may matter far beyond its calorie count. Darin also reveals why "eating the rainbow" is really about consuming a wider library of chemical information and why feeding your gut microbes may be just as important as feeding yourself. This episode will completely change the way you look at what's sitting on your plate. What You'll Learn Why Darin believes the calorie model leaves out some of food's most important biological effects How nutrients and plant compounds can influence gene expression through nutrigenomics and epigenetics Why Darin describes every meal as sending a "memo" to your DNA What biophotons are and the emerging research around light emitted by living cells and foods Why fresh, living foods may carry information that heavily processed foods have lost The theory of structured or "exclusion zone" water in living foods What happens to naturally occurring enzymes when foods are heated and processed Why the colors of fruits and vegetables correspond to different families of protective plant compounds How your food communicates with the trillions of microbes living inside your gut Why dietary diversity and fermented foods may help create a healthier, more resilient microbiome Chapters 00:00:00 – Welcome to SuperLife 00:00:32 – Sponsor: Bite 00:02:47 – The hidden clues sitting inside your food 00:03:22 – Carrots, tomatoes, and walnuts: coincidence or clues? 00:04:13 – Why we've been too busy counting calories 00:04:39 – Food is information 00:04:47 – Why the calorie model leaves out the bigger picture 00:05:14 – Your body isn't a furnace 00:05:48 – How food communicates with your cells 00:06:25 – Nutrigenomics: how food talks to your genes 00:06:53 – Every meal can influence gene expression 00:07:22 – What memo are you sending your DNA? 00:07:52 – The strange science of biophotons 00:09:03 – Why fresh food emits different light than processed food 00:09:37 – Where biophoton research stands scientifically 00:10:26 – Structured water and the fourth phase of water 00:12:00 – What processing may do to water inside food 00:12:37 – Sponsor: Manna Vitality 00:14:35 – The controversial theory of food enzymes 00:15:18 – What we know about enzymes in raw and sprouted foods 00:15:37 – The hidden information missing from nutrition labels 00:15:58 – Can the color of your food unlock your potential? 00:16:16 – Why "eat the rainbow" is chemistry, not mysticism 00:16:38 – Anthocyanins and the power of purple, red, and blue foods 00:17:27 – Color is the plant's natural label 00:18:20 – Every color sends your body a different message 00:18:50 – The problem with the modern "beige diet" 00:19:14 – You're feeding 38 trillion microbes, not just yourself 00:19:46 – How gut bacteria transform fiber into powerful compounds 00:20:25 – The extraordinary conversation between plants and your microbiome 00:21:05 – Why plant diversity matters for immunity, mood, and hormones 00:21:31 – The Stanford fermented food study 00:22:02 – What fermented foods did to microbiome diversity and inflammation 00:22:30 – Ultra-processed food, inflammation, and what's coming next 00:22:45 – Continue the full deep dive on Patreon 00:23:24 – Closing thoughts Thank You to Our Sponsors Bite Toothpaste: Go to trybite.com/DARIN20 or use code DARIN20 for 20% off your first order Manna Vitality: Go to mannavitality.com/ and use code DARIN12 for 12% off your order. One line of forensic testimony in the Lindsay Clancy trial has convinced an enormous number of people that her husband was the one holding those exercise bands. Search Lindsay Clancy fingerprints and you will find it everywhere, usually with his name attached to it.Trooper Jonathan O'Loughlin testified that investigators recovered no usable fingerprints from the knife or the three bands. If her prints were not on them, the argument runs, somebody else was holding them. Tony Brueski takes that argument seriously enough to check it against the rest of the same testimony. Then he keeps going down the list. What a forensic toxicologist told the jury about the four medications in her blood. What an interior bedroom door actually does. Who was on the other end of two phone calls that evening and what they heard. Who is testifying at Plymouth Superior Court, and which of those witnesses are named in the civil suits. And a phone conversation from the first anniversary that has been sitting in the open for two years while everyone argued past it.There is a difference between no usable fingerprints and no DNA, and the two keep getting blended together. Her DNA was on those bands, and both sides agreed to it in open court. On August 4 she answered the judge out loud, more than once, agreeing that the Commonwealth would not have to prove certain forensic facts about the blood, the bands and the DNA. Her attorney told the court they had not been contesting the government's case in chief at all.If you have argued about this case with anybody, get the whole list first. One trial is live. One retrial is more than a year out. Tony Brueski takes listener questions on both in a single combined cut. His guest is Robin Dreeke, retired FBI Special Agent and former chief of the Bureau's Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program. The Lindsay Clancy trial is in the middle of medical testimony at Plymouth Superior Court, with the case expected to run six to eight weeks and more than a hundred and eighty witnesses on the list. Two treating psychiatrists have testified they saw no psychosis. One of them acknowledged she does not think she has ever treated a patient with postpartum psychosis, a condition that affects roughly one to two mothers per thousand births. The Alex Murdaugh retrial is tentatively set for April 5, 2027 before Judge Debra McCaslin. Pretrial proceedings are running out of Lexington County. Prosecutors have moved to admit his 2023 trial testimony and to bar polygraph evidence and third-party guilt. The defense has demanded a fresh Brady and Giglio search with written certification inside thirty days, independent DNA testing, and a change of venue.Different states, different crimes, different defendants. What lines up is the fight over what the record does not contain and who is responsible for that.Lindsay Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder and is presumed innocent. Her defense argues she was not criminally responsible. Alex Murdaugh's convictions were overturned by the South Carolina Supreme Court. He awaits retrial and is presumed innocent. He has denied the killings throughout.Robin Dreeke takes all three segments and listeners run the questions. Postpartum psychosis affects roughly one to two mothers per thousand births. 988 is available if you need it.END LINKSJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Officials said Bryan Kohberger used a large fixed-blade knife to murder Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin inside the King Road house on November 13, 2022. The most important clue pointing investigators toward the type of weapon was the tan leather knife sheath found on the bed beside Mogen. The sheath carried Ka-Bar and U.S. Marine Corps markings, leading investigators to believe the killer had used a military-style Ka-Bar knife or a similar fixed-blade weapon. Prosecutors later disclosed evidence indicating that Kohberger had purchased a Ka-Bar knife and sheath online months before the murders, strengthening their theory about the weapon used in the attack. The sheath also became one of the most important pieces of physical evidence in the case because investigators recovered male DNA from its button snap that was ultimately linked to Kohberger. Despite the extensive injuries suffered by all four victims and the evidence pointing toward a large knife, investigators never recovered the actual murder weapon.Finding that knife became an important part of the investigation after the killings. Authorities searched Kohberger's apartment in Washington, his office, his Hyundai Elantra and his family's property in Pennsylvania, while investigators reconstructed his movements before and after the murders using surveillance footage, cellphone information and other evidence. According to the prosecution's reconstruction, Kohberger left Moscow after the killings and drove an indirect route through rural areas before eventually returning to Pullman, creating numerous possible places where the knife could have been discarded or hidden. Investigators searched for evidence that might reveal where the weapon went, but no knife was ever publicly identified as the murder weapon. That left the sheath discovered at King Road as the strongest physical remnant of the weapon authorities believed had been carried into the house. By the conclusion of the case, prosecutors had built their theory around the Ka-Bar-style knife, Kohberger's alleged purchase of such a weapon and the DNA recovered from the abandoned sheath, even though the knife itself remained missing.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

yler Robinson's defense filed its written bindover argument on August 11, 2026, responding to the state's 28-page memorandum asking Judge Tony Graf to order Robinson to stand trial. The defense filing was submitted after the five-day preliminary hearing, during which Robinson's lawyers challenged several important parts of the prosecution's evidentiary presentation, particularly the reliability and interpretation of forensic evidence. During that hearing, the defense called FBI and ATF forensic witnesses and questioned the reliability and subjectivity of portions of the DNA analysis, while also emphasizing that Robinson had not emerged as an investigative suspect until he surrendered. The defense had previously highlighted the ATF finding that the bullet jacket fragment recovered during the autopsy could not be conclusively identified as having been fired from the rifle authorities linked to Robinson. Those issues formed the factual backdrop to the defense's argument against bindover. The central defense position was that prosecutors were asking the court to move Robinson into a capital murder trial even though significant weaknesses remained in the evidence used to identify him as the shooter and connect the recovered weapon to the killing. That stood directly against the prosecution's position that Robinson's alleged admissions, DNA evidence, surveillance footage and witness testimony made the bindover determination exceptionally straightforward. Importantly, the dispute was not about whether the state had proven Robinson guilty beyond a reasonable doubt; Judge Graf was deciding whether prosecutors had presented probable cause sufficient to send the seven charges to trial, a considerably lower legal threshold. Robinson's defense was therefore attempting to persuade Graf that weaknesses exposed during the preliminary hearing were substantial enough that the state had not satisfied even that standard, while prosecutors argued that Robinson's alleged admissions and the corroborating forensic and video evidence easily cleared it. The state is scheduled to file its rebuttal on August 18, with oral arguments before Graf set for September 1.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Steffen Rulands from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich about how methods from statistical physics can be used to study collective phenomena in biology. We discuss his path from physics into stem cell biology and epigenetics, and how this background shapes the questions he asks in his work. We talk about his lab's focus on quantitative and mechanistic modeling rather than wet lab experiments. He explains that he uses single-cell genomics and other datasets to understand how cells make decisions, with interests ranging from development and regeneration to aging and rejuvenation. A major topic is DNA methylation during embryonic development. We discuss how he and his collaborators found surprisingly simple, self-similar patterns in methylation over time and along the genome, and how they explained these patterns with a feedback loop between chromatin conformation and methylation deposition. We also cover his collaboration on social insect colonies, where he examines how DNA methylation and gene regulation help explain stable social roles and flexibility when the queen is removed. In that system, interactions across the whole nest shape the regulation of queen- and worker-associated genes. Later in the conversation, we turn to aging. We discuss his recent work on temporal hierarchies in epigenetic aging and on collective dynamics of DNA methylation, where we ask how molecular-scale events can combine to produce the long timescale of organismal aging. We close by talking about rejuvenation, general principles in aging, and the role of physics in identifying what is generic versus what is specifically regulated in biology. Bigfoot week continues. Shipwreck welcomes Adrian from Rise Attire, who traded streetwear design for building Sasquatch Nations, an original video game rooted in real cryptid encounter stories. They swap theories on whether Sasquatch, the Giant of Kandahar, and dogman are all separate species or branches of the same mystery, dig into the Sasquatch Genome Project's unexplained DNA results, and preview the game's cinematic trailer and lore, including the guardians of the borderlands and a treaty between humans and something far older. There is also a detour into Nessie drone footage, portals in the deep woods you should never walk up the stairs toward, and a genuinely fed up rant about Lindsey Graham's sister taking his Senate seat. Equal parts cryptid convention and culture war venting, with plenty of heart underneath the chaos.

These systems could help scientists detect cancer earlier, develop treatments for antibiotic-resistant superbugs, understand disease more deeply, and eventually design countermeasures to emerging biological threats on demand. But the same capabilities introduce serious risks.Nguyen explains how AI could potentially generate biological sequences that retain dangerous functions while evading traditional sequence-matching detection systems ... essentially creating biological “deepfakes.” He also discusses why AI labs need to develop biodefense capabilities alongside increasingly powerful biological design tools. The conversation covers DNA foundation models, AI-generated viruses, biosecurity, pathogen detection, wastewater surveillance, attribution of biological threats, antimicrobial resistance, cancer detection, open-source versus closed-source biological AI, and why biology may be the next major frontier for artificial intelligence.00:00 AI-designed DNA and “deepfake” viruses00:21 AI is moving into biology00:55 Meet Eric Nguyen of Radical Numerics01:20 Why DNA is a language01:39 Teaching AI to read and write DNA02:54 What happens when AI can create biological systems?03:15 The promise and risks of programmable DNA04:32 The medical upside of AI-driven biology04:58 Moving beyond single-molecule drug discovery06:30 Can AI model the complexity of the human body?06:59 Biology has more data than we know how to use08:38 Where all the DNA data comes from09:12 The dangerous side of AI-generated biology10:01 What is a “deepfake virus”?12:41 Could AI make pathogens more dangerous?14:36 Putting AI biodefense on the front lines16:56 The three pillars of biodefense18:22 On-demand treatments for new diseases19:11 How close is this future?21:53 Why biodefense capabilities are falling behind24:36 Should powerful DNA models be open source?25:40 How Evo and Evo 2 were made safer26:49 Why Radical Numerics is keeping Omni closed27:55 AI-generated bacteriophages and superbugs29:23 Balancing breakthrough biology with biosecurity30:53 Using AI to detect cancer earlier32:08 Why cancer detection needs multiple biological signals33:49 “Sensor fusion” for biology34:24 Why a holistic view of medicine matters

Message Dan and MikeWe finally sit down to unpack Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth installment in Tom Holland's run as Peter Parker and the first Spidey film from director Destin Daniel Cretton. Picking up four years after No Way Home's spell erased Peter from the world's memory, this is a noticeably darker, more isolated take on the character — Aunt May is gone, his friendships with MJ and Ned are gone, and the arachnid side of his DNA is starting to take over. We dig into how that trauma-driven tone works, and where it doesn't.One of us walks away calling this the weakest of the Tom Holland Spider-Man films, and we're honest about why: a story that feels overcrowded with characters, some shaky CGI work on the Scorpion, and a villain problem that never quite resolves who we're actually supposed to be rooting against. We also talk through the returning cast — Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Mark Ruffalo, Florence Pugh — plus the newer additions, including Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle, Tramell Tillman's William Mesker, Naomi Watts voicing E.D.I.T.H., and a genuinely strong turn from Sadie Sink as Jean Grey that surprised us both.Along the way we get into the film's stunt work and practical martial arts sequences, the choice to make Peter's webs organic again as a nod to Tobey Maguire's era, and what it means that this film is now closing in on two billion dollars worldwide and threatening box office records held by Avengers: Endgame and Titanic. We also share (in maybe too much detail) the theater experience that colored one of our first viewings, because full transparency matters around here.Whether you loved Brand New Day or walked out with the same reservations we did, we want to hear it. Day one of Tyler Robinson's preliminary hearing on July 6, 2026, largely centered on prosecutors beginning to construct a timeline of Charlie Kirk's killing at Utah Valley University and establishing the authenticity of the surveillance footage and investigative records they intended to use against Robinson. Former UVU police officer Chris Bagley described the moment the gunshot rang out during Kirk's September 10, 2025 event and the chaos that followed, while Utah State Bureau of Investigation agent David Hull walked the court through the enormous video-review effort undertaken after the shooting. Hull testified that investigators examined hundreds of hours of surveillance footage and ultimately tracked a person they believed was Robinson moving around the UVU campus at several different points that day. Prosecutors introduced surveillance recordings from multiple locations as they attempted to connect the person seen approaching the campus, moving toward the area surrounding the Losee Center, and later leaving the area to Robinson. Three separate videos depicting Kirk being shot were admitted, although Judge Tony Graf determined that their graphic nature warranted restricting their display to the attorneys' and judge's monitors rather than broadcasting them throughout the courtroom. Kirk's widow, Erika, and his parents left the courtroom while the videos were reviewed. Prosecutors also introduced Kirk's autopsy report through Hull, which listed his cause of death as a gunshot wound to the neck and the manner of death as homicideThe defense spent much of the first day attacking the manner in which the prosecution was getting its evidence into the record rather than attempting to disprove the entire prosecution theory at that stage. Kathryn Nester and Robinson's attorneys repeatedly raised hearsay, foundation and authentication objections, arguing that investigators were being permitted to introduce reports, statements and records created by other people without those individuals appearing personally to testify. Judge Graf overruled most of those objections, reflecting the substantially lower evidentiary threshold governing a Utah preliminary hearing, whose purpose was only to determine whether probable cause existed to send Robinson to trial rather than whether prosecutors could prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. One significant exception involved an edited compilation of surveillance footage, which Graf declined to admit in that form and required prosecutors to replace with the underlying unedited material. Hull's testimony also revealed the scope of the prosecution's surveillance theory: investigators claimed Robinson had appeared on or around the UVU campus multiple times on September 10 and that they were attempting to stitch those appearances together into a continuous identification of the alleged shooter. By the end of day one, prosecutors had established the killing itself, the medical cause of Kirk's death, the existence and authenticity of substantial video evidence and the beginnings of their effort to identify Robinson as the person captured in that footage. They had not yet presented many of the pieces expected to become more consequential later in the hearing, including the rifle and DNA evidence, Robinson's alleged communications and admissions, and testimony concerning his roommate Lance Twiggs.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-moscow-murders-and-more--5852883/support.

Right now, inside your body, cells are dividing. Each time they divide, they must copy an enormous instruction manual: your DNA. Most copies are remarkably accurate. Some acquire changes. We tend to think of DNA as fixed. You receive it from your parents, carry it through life, and perhaps pass part of it to your children. But scientists are finding that inheritance is only the opening chapter. As we grow older, our cells collect mutations. Sunlight can leave its mark on skin cells. Tobacco smoke can alter cells in the lungs. Inflammation, infection, copying errors, environmental exposures, and simple chance can all play a part. Most of those changes may never matter. Some help our immune system recognize new threats. A few give one population of cells an advantage over its neighbors. And some are associated with cancer, cardiovascular disease, or other health risks. That means the cells in your body do not all carry precisely the same genetic story. For those of us in our 60s, 70s, 80s, and beyond, this raises a fascinating question: How much of our health is inherited, and how much continues to be written as we live? Our guest is award-winning science journalist and Smithsonian Associate Roxanne Khamsi. Her work has appeared in The Atlantic, The New York Times, WIRED, The Economist, and other leading publications. Her new book is Beyond Inheritance: Our Ever-Mutating Cells and a New Understanding of Health. Roxanne Khamsi, welcome to The Not Old Better Show.

Thomas Sowell is one of the thinkers I have recommended for years, particularly for his criticism of simplistic explanations for racial disparities. But I think one of the central arguments in Black Rednecks and White Liberals does not hold up as well as many conservatives assume. In this reaction, I respond to Hunter Matz's discussion of Sowell's thesis on the Joe Rogan Experience and examine the argument that Southern “redneck” culture was largely responsible for the cultural problems of black Americans.I look at the West Indies comparison, the distinction between Appalachian and Southern plantation culture, the influence of the planter class, the history of slavery and Reconstruction, Northern education, Booker T. Washington, the Great Society, and the cultural changes that followed. My argument is not that culture does not matter. Quite the opposite. Culture matters enormously. But history is complicated, and I do not think we can explain modern black American problems by simply pointing to Southern rednecks. As I say toward the end of the video, I have not argued that anything is in anyone's DNA or blamed one group of white people for everything. I am arguing that the history is more complicated than this particular explanation allows.Jon's Music: jonharristunes.comTo Support the Podcast: https://www.jonharrismedia.com/support/Become a Patronhttps://www.patreon.com/jonharrispodcastSubstack: https://substack.com/@jonharris Follow Jon on Twitter: https://twitter.com/jonharris1989Follow Jon on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jonharris1989/00:00 – Why I Am Reacting to Joe Rogan02:43 – Thomas Sowell's “Black Rednecks” Thesis04:00 – The Problem With the West Indies Comparison06:35 – Are Ghettos and Black Culture Unique to America?08:33 – Did Black Americans Simply Adopt “Redneck Culture”?10:00 – The Cornwall and Ebonics Argument12:10 – Who Actually Lived in the Southern Black Belt?15:35 – Why Eugene Genovese Matters16:58 – Reconstruction, Education, and Booker T. Alex Murdaugh's defense is asking a judge to move the retrial out of the entire fourteenth judicial circuit, and it is the motion people argue about most. Tony Brueski takes listener questions with Robin Dreeke, retired FBI Special Agent and former chief of the Bureau's Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program. The filing calls the case among the most heavily publicized criminal prosecutions in South Carolina history. It asks the court to move the trial outside the circuit where Murdaugh's family operated for generations. His great-grandfather, grandfather and father served consecutively as the region's elected solicitor from 1920 to 2006. The circuit covers five counties: Allendale, Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper.Judge Debra McCaslin has left it to the state and the defense to discuss possible locations and bring her options. Pretrial proceedings are running out of her home court in Lexington County. The listener objection is a fair one. Documentaries, books and streaming series about this family reached the whole country, not five counties. Moving the trial also means the community where Maggie and Paul Murdaugh lived and died does not get to sit in judgment. The counterargument holds that saturation is not uniform. Two of the motions prosecutors just renewed in the Alex Murdaugh retrial are about what the jury will never hear. Tony Brueski takes the listener mail on them with Robin Dreeke, a retired FBI Special Agent who spent his career in behavioral analysis. The first would exclude evidence of third-party guilt. The state won that fight before the 2023 trial. Winning it again means Murdaugh's lawyers cannot stand up and point at another person as the killer without clearing a bar the court sets. The second would exclude any mention of a polygraph. That one has a history. In an October filing before the first trial, Murdaugh's own attorneys wrote that Curtis Eddie Smith failed a polygraph when he was questioned about whether he murdered Maggie and Paul. Smith has denied wrongdoing in the murders. Prosecutors argued then, and are arguing again, that juries give polygraphers more weight than the science supports.Prosecutors are also asking the court to admit Murdaugh's 2023 testimony at the retrial, seeking a fresh review of digital evidence, and opposing the defense's bid for outside DNA testing. The question listeners keep raising is worth taking seriously. An office that calls its evidence overwhelming is asking a judge to close two doors it already closed once. Prosecutors would say that is standard practice and that speculation is not evidence.Maggie Murdaugh and Paul Murdaugh were killed at the family's Colleton County property on June 7, 2021. Paul was twenty-two. Murdaugh has said he found their bodies.Judge Debra McCaslin has tentatively set the retrial for April 5, 2027, and is handling pretrial proceedings in Lexington County. With the verdicts vacated, Murdaugh stands as an untried defendant again, presumed innocent. Robin Dreeke takes the mailbag on what gets kept out and who it actually protects.END LINKSJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Murder and Mystery in the Last Frontier

Many people dream of hunting in the Alaska wilderness, and for most, it is the adventure of a lifetime. However, a few unlucky hunters never return from their adventure. As I've said many times, Alaska is big, rugged, and beautiful but also dangerous, from raging rivers to high seas to rugged mountains and ice fields marred by deep crevasses. Moose, bears, and wolves all present risks, and the extreme cold in the winter can cause frostbite or hypothermia in a matter of minutes. We also discuss antibiotics before embryo transfer, what ASRM says about routine antibiotic use, and why finding bacterial DNA does not automatically mean treatment will improve live-birth rates. The takeaway: chronic endometritis can be real and treatable in the right patient, but not every borderline result explains infertility, miscarriage, or a failed IVF transfer. Thanks for tuning in to another episode of 'Taco Bout Fertility Tuesday' with Dr. Mark Amols. In 1971, an off-duty constable walking near an abandoned flint mill beside the River Trent in Burton upon Trent found what he first thought was a piece of cement, until he saw it was part of a human skull. Beneath the earth lay the skeletal remains of a young man, naked, bound hand and foot, and buried in a shallow grave in a kneeling position, with only pink socks and a wedding ring left to suggest he had once belonged somewhere.More than five decades later, he is still known only as “Fred the Head”, a nickname born from the first body part uncovered, not a name anyone who loved him ever gave him. Fingerprints, dental work, facial reconstructions, DNA testing, and possible matches have all failed to restore his identity, making him Staffordshire's oldest unsolved murder victim: a man who was brutally hidden away, but never reported missing by anyone police could find.

Alex Murdaugh is getting a second trial because of a court clerk. That is the whole reason any of these new filings exist, and it is worth keeping in front of you. Tony Brueski takes listener questions with retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke. The South Carolina Supreme Court vacated Murdaugh's 2023 murder convictions after jurors said Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill told them to watch his body language and not be fooled by his testimony. The justices ruled that amounted to a suggestion he was guilty. Hill later pleaded guilty to perjury, obstruction of justice and misconduct in office, and was sentenced to probation. Now prosecutors have moved to put the very testimony Hill commented on in front of a new jury. Their filing asks Judge Debra McCaslin to admit Murdaugh's 2023 trial testimony at the retrial, including his admission that he lied to investigators for roughly eighteen months about being at the kennels the night Maggie and Paul were killed. The same filings renew the state's motions to exclude polygraph evidence and third-party guilt, seek a fresh review of digital evidence, and oppose the defense's request for independent DNA testing. The listener question landing hardest is the circular one. The verdict fell because of what a clerk said about him testifying. The state's answer is to make sure the next jury hears him testify anyway.McCaslin has tentatively set the retrial for April 5, 2027. Lead prosecutor Creighton Waters told the court the state could have been ready before the end of 2026. Dick Harpootlian said the defense has eight new expert witnesses and that DNA work alone could take six months.Murdaugh's convictions were overturned, he awaits retrial, and he is presumed innocent. He has denied the killings since 2021 and remains in prison on financial crime convictions.END LINKSJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? In the lead-up to Bryan Kohberger's trial, some of the most consequential legal fighting centered on the DNA recovered from the knife sheath found beneath Madison Mogen's body and the investigative genetic genealogy, or IGG, process that investigators used to identify Kohberger as a suspect. Authorities had extracted a single-source male DNA profile from the sheath and later sent the sample to Othram, which developed a SNP profile that could be compared against genealogy databases that permitted law-enforcement searches. Investigators used that information to build family trees that eventually pointed toward Kohberger, after which authorities collected trash from his family's Pennsylvania home and obtained DNA that helped connect his family to the sheath sample. Kohberger's defense spent years seeking the underlying IGG records, laboratory materials, family-tree information and details about how Othram and the FBI conducted the genealogy work. That discovery fight produced multiple motions to compel, closed hearings and court-ordered disclosures under seal as the defense argued that it needed the material to examine whether the investigative process had been scientifically reliable and constitutionally permissible. The fight eventually moved from obtaining the evidence to trying to keep it out of court altogether. Kohberger's attorneys argued that law enforcement had violated his constitutional rights by conducting the IGG investigation without a warrant and by later obtaining DNA through a trash pull at his parents' home, contending that evidence developed from those steps and subsequent warrants should be suppressed as fruit of an unlawful search. Judge Steven Hippler rejected that argument in February 2025, ruling that Kohberger had not established a constitutionally protected privacy interest that made the IGG process or abandoned trash unlawful searches and declining to suppress the resulting evidence. The defense then continued attacking the genealogy evidence through motions in limine, arguing that the State should not be permitted to present the IGG process to the jury and raising separate challenges involving terminology such as “touch” or “contact” DNA and the disclosure of expert testimony. The State maintained that IGG had primarily been an investigative lead rather than the evidentiary foundation of its case, while prosecutors intended to rely on the direct comparison between Kohberger's DNA and the profile recovered from the sheath. By the time trial approached, the DNA battle had therefore become two interconnected fights: whether the genetic genealogy that led investigators to Kohberger had been lawfully conducted, and exactly how much of that complicated investigative history the jury would ultimately be allowed to hear.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

They had not yet presented many of the pieces expected to become more consequential later in the hearing, including the rifle and DNA evidence, Robinson's alleged communications and admissions, and testimony concerning his roommate Lance Twiggs.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

The South Carolina Supreme Court did not only fault the clerk of court when it threw out Alex Murdaugh's convictions. The justices also flagged how much of the 2023 trial was spent on the money he stole. Tony Brueski takes your questions on what that means for the retrial with retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke.Prosecutors spent close to two weeks of the first trial on Murdaugh's financial crimes. That evidence was not tied to the murder charges directly. It was offered to establish motive: his thefts were about to be exposed, and the state argued the killings bought him sympathy and time.Judge Debra McCaslin now decides how much of that comes in the second time. She has told the attorneys she knows nothing about the first trial and wants them complete when they explain it to her.The state's newest filings run the other direction. Prosecutors moved to admit Murdaugh's own 2023 testimony at the retrial, renewed motions to exclude polygraph evidence and third-party guilt, requested a fresh review of digital evidence, and opposed the defense's push for independent DNA analysis.Listeners are asking a sharp question about the arithmetic. If the financial evidence gets trimmed and the third-party door stays shut, what is the state walking into April 2027 with, and is it enough for twelve people who have never heard any of this.Murdaugh has denied the killings of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh since 2021. There is a limited amount of DNA left from under Maggie Murdaugh's left hand, and both sides want to test it first. Tony Brueski takes your questions on that fight with retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke.SLED previously determined the material belonged to an unknown, unrelated male, but did not identify him. The state uses STR analysis, which checks samples against law enforcement databases and cannot name someone who is not already in the system. The defense wants the reserve samples sent first to Othram, a Texas laboratory that runs SNP testing and forensic genetic genealogy, the approach that can build out a family tree from an unknown contributor. In a July filing, Murdaugh's attorneys told the court something new. Prosecutors had just disclosed that reserve samples from two evidence items remain unprocessed, and that SLED wants to run repeat testing on them. Every test consumes material. The defense argues a retest risks exhausting the only sample capable of producing a name. Othram, they say, could finish in sixty to ninety days. The same filing accuses SLED of mishandling the white T-shirt Murdaugh wore the night of the killings. Testing returned negative for human blood on the stained areas, and the shirt was later rendered unavailable for additional testing after a chemical enhancement agent was applied. The defense calls that a reason to doubt the agency's good faith. That is their allegation, not a court finding.Prosecutors oppose the defense's access request. Judge Debra McCaslin decides the sequence. A July conference on the testing brought defense attorneys, prosecutors, SLED forensic scientists and Othram's chief executive into the same call. The verdicts against him were reversed on appeal, and Murdaugh returns to trial presumed innocent. On April 13, 1987, 54-year-old psychiatric nurse and prison minister Retha Welch was found brutally murdered in her Newport, Kentucky home. Police quickly set their sights on William Virgil, a recently released inmate who admitted to a prior relationship with her. A jury convicted him in 1988, but decades later, the conviction unravelled amidst recanted snitch testimonies, missing rape kits, and DNA from three unknown men on preserved slides. Was William Virgil the victim of systemic police misconduct, or did legal technicalities and degraded decades-old evidence allow a killer to walk free? --For early, ad free episodes and monthly exclusive bonus content, join our Patreon! Weirdos! We're revisiting Whitechapel in this MASSIVE episode which includes all 5 episodes of Alaina's Roman Empire, Jack the Ripper! Alaina takes us to the streets of Whitechapel for part one of Jack The Ripper, and boy is it a stark picture she's painting us. Whitechapel was dark, damp, dirty and downright desolate at the time Jack The Ripper was roaming the streets. People were living in all kinds of horrible conditions, butchers and slaughterhouse workers were walking around covered in blood and because things were like this, it made the perfect stomping ground for a vicious murderer. Mary Ann "Polly" Nichols was the Ripper's first victim and the main person that we'll go over in part one while Alaina also gives us a background on a couple of other potential early victims. Stay tuned for (we're thinkin') three more! Jack the Ripper part two brings us the absolutely horrifying murder of Annie Chapman. Annie's story, much like the rest of the women who were killed, is incredibly devastating. She was struggling with sobriety when she landed on the shady streets in Spitalfields in the East end and was having a terrible time trying to find work to just get by. Robert Anderson, the head of the criminal investigations department was still on vacation, Sir Charles Warren's ego stepped on the scene and they were not even one step closer to uncovering the culprits identity. Jack the Ripper Part three will cover what is known as, “the double event.” Both Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes were found killed on this September night. Both women shared a lot in common with the previous two victims. They'd struggled through pretty much their entire lives just to make ends meet and then were met with this as their end. In this part we'll start to entertain the theory that Jack perhaps had some kind of medical background and you'll see just why one might think so once you dive into the episode! Hold onto your butts! Jack the Ripper part 4 is here weirdos! This installment will cover the horrific, and most brutal murder yet: the murder of Mary Jane Kelly. Mary Jane was the youngest victim at just twenty five years old and the only victim that was killed in her own room. When the police arrived on scene they were shocked, but still not any closer to uncovering the identity of the ripper. OH and also, Alaina has some HOT TAKES on the letters we went over in part 3. YOU HAVE REACHED THE CONCLUSION!!!! Alaina's final part of Jack the Ripper is here and we are talking all things suspects, confirmation bias, science, mitochondrial DNA and Patricia Cornwell. Do we know who Jack the Ripper is by now? No. Do we know who he isn't? Sorta. Stay tuned for years to come because Alaina claims one day she will have our answers!!!
