Hey Family Brand! It's Chris and Melissa here, and today we're diving into something that has been incredibly meaningful for our family lately—creating shared experiences through service. If you've ever felt like life is moving too fast and you're struggling to connect as a family, this episode is for you. We're sharing our recent experience feeding the homeless, how it impacted our kids, and why we're making service a bigger priority in 2025. One of our biggest takeaways from this experience? Service is like medicine. It shifts the focus away from ourselves and helps us see the bigger picture. It builds gratitude, strengthens our core values, and brings us together in a way that few other things do. We've always talked about the importance of being intentional with our family culture, and this was a perfect example of how shared experiences create a deeper sense of identity and belonging. We also talk about how we planned this experience using JustServe.org, a website that connects families with local service opportunities. Whether you're looking for a one-time event or want to make service a regular part of your family's routine, this is a great place to start. And if you don't have time to plan something big? That's okay. Even small, everyday acts of service—helping a neighbor, cooking a meal, or simply being more present for someone—can have a huge impact. Another takeaway? If it's not on the calendar, it won't happen. We've learned that good intentions aren't enough—we need to schedule service opportunities just like we would a vacation or a family dinner. This week, we're challenging our kids to pick our next family service project, giving them ownership in the process. We'll report back on how it goes! So here's your challenge—how can you create more shared experiences in your family? Whether it's a service project, a trip, or just making time for regular family meals, intentionality is everything. Take some time this week to talk about it, put something on the calendar, and make it happen! In this episode of The Optimistic American, host Paul Johnson sits down with Shannon Wright, a passionate advocate for community service and the representative of JustServe, a free online platform connecting volunteers with meaningful service opportunities. Together, they explore the transformative power of volunteerism and how it can enrich communities, bridge divides, and create a sense of belonging. Topics Discussed in the Video: - What is JustServe? Shannon introduces JustServe, a platform designed to match volunteers with causes they care about, whether it's local projects like cleaning parks or national initiatives that address broader issues. - The Importance of Volunteerism: Paul and Shannon discuss how volunteer efforts—whether through neighborhood watch programs, mentoring youth, or helping seniors—can strengthen the fabric of society. They share stories about how service builds connections, improves safety, and contributes to personal fulfillment. - Personalized Service Opportunities: Shannon explains how JustServe allows users to tailor their volunteer experiences based on their interests and availability, making it easier to engage in activities that resonate with them, whether it's working with animals, helping the homeless, or teaching children. - Engaging the Next Generation: The conversation highlights the success of youth engagement, with Shannon sharing inspiring examples of high school students leading impactful projects. She emphasizes how service not only helps communities but also shapes young people's character and provides them with skills for future success. - Overcoming Division Through Service: Paul notes how volunteerism brings people together, regardless of political or social differences. Working side by side with others can help heal divisions and remind us of our shared humanity. - Finding Purpose Through Service: Paul and Shannon reflect on the profound impact of service not only for those being helped but also for the volunteers. Shannon discusses how serving others can provide a deep sense of meaning, especially for those dealing with challenges like depression or uncertainty about their life path.
Fran is the appointed President of For Our Town Gilbert, an organization that brings together the leaders of government, education, faiths, businesses, charities and more to focus on the community social uplifting needs like domestic violence elimination, mental health awareness-improvement, hunger, shelter, and many more. While this organization existed before she was asked to lead, it rarely had an impact on the town. During the first year of service the group grew For Our Town quarterly breakfast to over 100 participants, a food drive that has collected over 500K lbs of food; and thousands of school supplies. She and her sweetheart of 36 years have 4 children (1 girl and 3 boys) and she has taught them the value of service and giving. She has one grandson with a granddaughter on the the way. Before leading For Our Town, Fran helped to bring the JustServe initiative to Arizona. JustServe is a website that connects volunteers with non-profits to bring help to the heroes that lead these charities. www.JustServe.com She focused on Gilbert, the east valley of Phoenix to start. The initiative and website had zero volunteers and zero non-profits, and this was one of the first 5 cities to implement JustServe. She plowed the ground for future success and when she handed over the reins of the website/app it had thousands of volunteers and almost every charity in the area using it as their default volunteer connection site. You can now find JustServe in almost every city in the USA and in many other countries. You'd think she didn't have time for anything else, but she also is the co-Director of the Arizona Light the World GIVING MACHINES with her husband Steve. What is a Giving Machine? Well, they are vending machines that allow you to give to those in need by buying items for charities that are loaded in the machines. She manages the city leaders for seven cities in Arizona (Glendale, Gilbert, Tucson, Flagstaff, Prescott, Gila Valley, and Snowflake). Each city has a committee of around 20 to 30 volunteers. The machines support 30 charities this past year and raised $1.5 million for the charities and ALL the donations (yes, 100% went to the charity). She's co-led this work for 7 years and raised over $6M dollars total. ---------- Guiding Growth: Conversations with Community Leaders Join our hosts, Sarah Watts and Ben Kalkman, as we explore the human journey of leaders - their stories of humility, triumph, roadblocks, and lessons learned - as they reflect on how they became who they are today and share stories of inspiration and hope with listeners. We'll take away the title, just for a moment, and enjoy a connection with the soul. Be sure to subscribe to our show for more interviews with community leaders. In this episode, host Janet Michael introduces the upcoming discussion about the Community Connect & Serve event. Her guests are Shannon Ganoe, Andrea Cosans, and Bishop BJ Custer, all of whom are involved in organizing and participating in the event. Shannon Ganoe, a Community Health Paramedic from Winchester and a key organizer of the event, explains the origins and goals of the Community Connect & Serve event. She highlights how the event has provided a space for non-profit organizations and local agencies to network, share resources, and collaborate for the betterment of the community. Bishop BJ Custer from Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints shares his experience attending the first event two years ago, elaborating on how it helped him connect his congregation with various community resources and volunteer opportunities. He emphasizes the value of these connections in aiding his clergy and meeting the needs of his congregation. Andrea Cosans, who oversees Winchester CCAP, speaks about the crucial role volunteers play in their operations. She describes how the event helps non-profits like hers find volunteers that match their needs and vice versa, ensuring a good fit between volunteers' skills and the organizations' requirements. They discuss the interactive activities designed to foster networking, break down barriers, and create a more relaxed environment for connections to form. Shannon highlights the importance of breaking out of the usual silos and collaborating to address community issues more effectively. BJ discusses how the event serves as a resource not only for receiving help but also for contributing to the community. He points out the joy and fulfillment that comes from volunteerism, particularly through engaging youth groups in these activities. The conversation shifts to the logistics of volunteering, with Shannon and Andrea explaining how even those with limited availability or specific needs can find suitable volunteer opportunities. They mention the flexibility of volunteer roles, from in-person activities to virtual projects. Shannon reminds listeners of JustServe.org which offers a variety of these opportunities. The conversation underscores the value of the Community Connect & Serve event. It provides a platform for non-profits, businesses, faith-based organizations, and local government agencies to find volunteers and resources, facilitating better community service and collaboration. Janet concludes the conversation by encouraging listeners to attend the event on September 26th, whether they are individuals looking to volunteer or organizations seeking to network and find help. The goal is to make meaningful connections that benefit the entire community. If you are an agency interested in attending the 3pm - 5pm session, please register by clicking here. There is no fee to participate in the event. You are welcome to set up a table or simply network with other agencies during the time period. During the 2023 holiday season, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints collaborated with religious organizations on more than 60 projects serving some 42,000 children in the New York metro area. One of many leaders supporting this interfaith partnership is the Reverend Que English, who has said that this alliance is a model of how “we come together to bring hope” in a divided world. The Rev. English has served as the director of the Center for Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services since 2021; previously, she served as the deputy director of faith-based initiatives for the Governor's Office in the State of New York. On today's episode, Beth & Emma are talking about having a heart for service. Kids can learn so much through serving others - those they know and those they don't know and may never meet. Kids of all ages can participate in various service opportunities including making blessing bags to keep in the car, packing food at a Feed My Starving Children MobilePack, volunteering at church, working at the food bank, helping at Project Birthday Bag, or volunteering with kids, veterans, the elderly, or animals. In addition to community service projects, kids can learn so much by serving others in their own home, helping to make food for new moms or when someone passes away, helping clean a friend's house, or keeping kids company so their mom can have a break. We're chatting about the benefits of raising kids who serve (and who become adults who serve), and why it's important in our lives. We also share how we've been on both the giving and the receiving ends of service and how it impacted us - even if it means having green bananas for years. SUMMARY Brad Aronson, author of the National Bestseller HumanKind: Changing the World One Small Act a Time, discovered content when his wife was recovering from leukemia. Inspired by the many demonstrations of "humankindness" that supported their family through this dark time, he began writing a blog. Then, realizing that even the smallest of gestures from friends and strangers can lift, Aronson began seeking out simple acts of kindness across the globe. Collecting these good deeds of everyday heroes, Aronson now offers HumanKind. But it’s more than just a compilation of feel-good anecdotes. The book also provides a resource section filled with dozens of ideas, organizations, and service opportunities to motivate anyone wanting to “change the world one small act at a time.” "The most uplifting and life-affirming book in years" (Forbes). All author royalties go to the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. KEY IDEAS Barriers to offering acts of kindness include feeling we can’t make a difference or feeling awkward reaching out to others. Small acts of kindness can have large ripple effects. The best way to start making a difference is by taking baby steps (e.g., sending a text, sharing a joke). Long-term follow-up is invaluable to those in long-term difficult circumstances. We don’t have to solve everyone’s problems; we just need to be there and be ourselves. QUOTES FROM ARONSON “I believe that most people are good.” “We all have different gifts to give—what’s important is rising to the occasion, whatever circumstances we find ourselves in.” “Just doing anything matters!” “[Heroes] don’t command an army of helpers or have an abundance of free time. They’re everyday people who focus on what they can do to make a difference. Their acts of kindness change lives and even save them. These everyday heroes don’t just hope the world will get better—they make it better.” “Conversation is a medicine any of us can dispense and it provides lasting respite.” “No expression of love is wasted, and even the smallest gestures tend to go much further than we think they will.” BUY HumanKind: Changing the World One Small Act At a Time RECOMMENDATIONS For many ideas to change the world one small act at a time, check out JustServe. Welcome to Episode 17! In this episode, Chris, Lisa and Tim are joined by special quest Kelly Hughes, Founder and Executive Director of Foster Love Project. Located in Dormont, Foster Love Project's mission is to "provide love in action to kids in foster care as well as support to the families who are providing care for them" -- and they do a tremendous job! Sometimes foster families only have a few moments to welcome the arrival of a new foster child into their home. Kelly and her husband have fostered 8 kids and know how challenging that can be for everyone. Kelly started Foster Love Project as a way to make sure kids moving into foster care are given the essentials they need to feel as loved, valued, and safe as possible (think toothbrush, pajamas, stuffed animal, etc.) To date, Foster Love Project has provided 12,000 "placement bags" to kids entering foster care in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Illinois. Foster Love Project's work doesn't end there. From operating a donation center where kids in foster care can shop for free, to providing guidance and support for families caring for foster kids, its work continues to grow! Foster Love Project is dedicated to helping foster kids, but they can't do it without volunteers. Please consider helping them out!For more information about volunteering with Foster Love Project and a host of other organizations, go to https://www.justserve.org/ (type in your zip code to find service opportunities near you)!

The Borgen Project (0:00:00) Fighting global poverty can seem like quite the daunting task. With 736 million people living in extreme poverty and about 2.5 billion that lack access to improved sanitation, we have a long way to go before we solve this issue. But fighting world poverty is a much more serious issue than just a simple policy change. That's what the Borgen Project, a nonprofit organization located in Seattle, is doing an incredible part in not only raising money and materials to fight poverty, but also pass legislation that create long term solutions. Today, we're joined today by Kim Thelwell, the Vice President of Policy and Communications for the Borgen Project. She's here to talk about the impact of poverty and what the Borgen Project is doing to stop it. Drive-By Musicians (0:14:58) Most assisted-living facilities across the country are closed to visitors right now. It can be lonely for senior citizens to live away from their families, but lately it's been made worse because they can't be visited by family and friends. Well, an assisted-living home in Billings, Montana came up with a perfect way to help seniors feel loved during this time of isolation and chaos. Members of the community are welcome to share their talents with the assisted-living residents as they become drive-by musicians. Here to tell us all about it is JustServe specialist Lynnadele Nielsen! The Benefits of a Medical Clown (0:32:37) The atmosphere in hospitals across the country these days has been gloomier than usual. There's little room for laughter amidst the hordes of COVID patients in New York and some rising numbers in other cities. But what if laughter had healing capacities? We've all heard that laughter is the best medicine, but I think many of us would also prefer taking morphine over watching Seinfeld to manage our pain. But what would you say to a visit from a professional medical clown? Around the world these clowns are dedicating their careers to bringing humor and fun to hospital patients. Joining us today to share his past experience is Matthew A. Wilson, a former medical clown and Emmy-award winning performer, who spent years at the bed sides of terminally ill children giving them, their families, and the hospital staff something to laugh about. Quarantine Dreams (0:52:48) Something's going on with our dreams. Maybe you've seen the #covidnightmares or #pandemicdreamstrending on Twitter and wondered what it was. Or perhaps you've been experiencing it yourself. Either way, since quarantine has started, people having been more intense, more vivid dreams, and, are remembering them. Here to discuss this phenomenon and her research into it is Harvard dream researcher and author of “The Committee of Sleep,” Dr. Deirdre Barrett. Golfing to Help Kids (1:09:12) If you're looking for a fun service opportunity this week, it's time to “tee up”! Just like any sport, golf provides an opportunity for kids to learn about and arm themselves with the tools they need to handle the ups and downs of life. And one organization is taking full advantage of this teaching opportunity. The First Tee is an organization that holds golf clinics to not only teach golf skills but life skills. Beth Harman grew up participating in The First Tee and now works for the organization. We wanted to hear more about her experiences and how we can get involved, so we've invited her onto the show to tell us more about this unique service opportunity. Charitable Giving During COVID-19 (1:26:50) You know that feeling you get when you have an extra granola bar in your car that you're able to give to someone on the side of the road who is asking for food? Or that feeling when you give a struggling friend a big hug? There is something really special and uniting about giving our time, talents, resources or money to others in need. And now, more than ever, people need our assistance. Today, to tell us a little bit about how charities have been affected by the pandemic, and more importantly, and how we can get involved especially now, is philanthropist and board member of over 10 major charities, Jean Shafiroff.
This month, Lisa and Tim kick things off by providing updates on a couple of JustServe projects they have recently been involved in while Western Pennsylvania is still in the COVID-19 "yellow" zone. Chris then introduces us to this month's special guest, Reverend Anais Hussian, the Aftercare Mentor Coordinator for Foundation of Hope. Each year, approximately 30,000 people are arrested and incarcerated at the Allegheny County Jail in Pittsburgh. Foundation of Hope's mission is to "empower" them to "restore their relationship with their God, rebuild their lives, and reconcile to their communities.” One way they do that is by providing mentors to help them successfully return to the community. Anais is an absolute pleasure, and the work she is involved in is critical for a segment of our society that is often overlooked and alienated. If you really want to make a potentially life-changing impact on someone else's life, consider becoming a mentor with Foundation of Hope. They could really use your help! For more information about volunteering with Foundation of Hope and a host of other organizations, go to https://www.justserve.org/ (type in your zip code to find service opportunities near you)!
Online Ivy League Courses (0:00:00) Harvard, Columbia, Yale. These Ivy League universities are household names and admittance to any of these schools guarantees a world-class education. However, an education of this caliber is attainable to only a select 5% of the student population—until now. These universities, and other non-Ivy League schools like Stanford and MIT, have begun offering free courses online available to any who wish to enroll. Dhawal Shah from Class Central, the leading destination for finding Massive Open online Courses, is here to discuss these offerings. The Perils of Giving Conflict Advice (0:14:05) We've all seen our fair share of arguments and conflict. Especially now as we're in close quarters with the people that we love the most, but have the power to annoy us the most. Conflict can range from divorce to jealousy to a ten second debate with a coworker. No matter how it manifests in our lives, we can all relate to the feelings of confusion that come along with conflict. Often, we reach out to people close to us for advice. But, are you prepared for when it's your turn to give the advice? With us today, we have Emily Taylor, certified mediator, conflict specialist, and communications trainer, to help us know just what to say to our friends in need. The Science of Friendship (0:34:07) What does it mean to be a good friend? From experience, many of us might say it means to be loyal, thoughtful, and forgiving of our many flaws. Good friends remember important events in our lives, bring us soup when we're sick, and laugh not only with us but at us. At least these are the characteristics we think all friends should have. But, what does the actual science say? Lydia Denworth is an acclaimed science journalist who has researched the science and history of human friendship. She's the author of the book “Friendship”, and she joins us today to discuss the science behind it so we can make and be good friends. Nurses on the Front Line (0:50:38) We know what our view of the pandemic has looked like—board games, crafts and online school. But what have things looked like for health professionals? Recent studies are showing that people working on the front lines make up at least 11% of those infected. These people are risking their lives every day, and we wanted to take a minute to hear the story of someone who has been a part of this fight. Joining us is Fastaff Clinical Director and working nurse Karen Fountain. FamilySearch Indexing (1:04:21) We have so much time on our hands these days, and what better way to fill it than with meaningful service? But it can be hard to find service opportunities that you can do from the comforts of your own home. However, one service opportunity that's available all over the world is Family Search Indexing. So, what is this and how can we get involved? Mary Lou Lillian is an avid indexer who shares the opportunity to index with those in her community through the JustServe platform. We invited her on the show to tell us more about how we can serve through Family Search Indexing. Looking for Post-Quarantine Jobs (1:24:05) In the last seven weeks, over 33 million Americans filed for unemployment. With such staggering numbers, finding a new job is intimidating to say the least. Not only do people have to worry about standing out from their competition, but how do you network with companies that just had to let go of the majority of their employees? When is it appropriate to talk to possible employers, including your former if you are looking to get your job back? And how can you start that conversation with sensitivity? Today, we have career expert and friend of the show, Josh Doody, to answer some of these questions and share how we can navigate today's complicated job market.
This month's episode is a little different, as we are currently at home while the world is grappling with COVID-19. Join Chris, Lisa, Tim, Ken and our special guest, Sherry Gunn, as we discuss ways each of us can help out by "lifting where we stand" during these unique and challenging times. A few weeks ago, Sherry, whose husband is a physician, identified some ways to show love and support for some of the workers battling to keep COVID-19 in check, and quickly moved into action. She shares her experience and explains how we can all pitch in - whether by helping an existing volunteer organization, or by finding our own way to serve. Sherry's project is posted on JustServe as "For The Helpers". You can find out how to participate with "For the Helpers" by going to https://www.justserve.org/projects/0f12f5bc-edd9-421a-9469-918f0c87064b. Tim shares another fantastic new COVID-19 - related project that involves sending cards, letter and pictures to elderly people in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, etc. who are unable to accept visits during this difficult time. To volunteer for that project, go to https://www.justserve.org/projects/3c75e61d-cc49-45c8-9dcb-20641baaa51c. A host of other volunteer opportunities are posted on JustServe, as well. To start exploring projects in your area, go to https://www.justserve.org/ (type in your zip code to find service opportunities near you)!
In this month's episode, Tim leads off by sharing his recent deployment to California to help stave off the Corona virus - he also shares his thoughts on, and a few suggestions for ways to prepare for, COVID 19. Next, we are honored to be joined by Joyce Davis, Executive Director of Lincoln Park Community Center (LPCC). Don't let Joyce's infectious laughter and bubbly outgoing personality fool you -- she means business when it comes to helping those in need! LPCC serves over 600 families in Allegheny County's Penn Hills and Verona communities through monthly food pantries, Head Start programs, a clothing closet, and after school programs -- and they can always use a helping hand! For more information about volunteering with Lincoln Park Community Center and a host of other organizations, go to https://www.justserve.org/ (type in your zip code to find service opportunities near you)!
JustServe (0:00:00) I think most of us have heard the quote from Gandhi that says, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others”. It's completely true, but sometimes I hear this and think “Okay, but like, how?” Unless you have a nearby friend in need or know all of the local charity organizations near you, it can be a bit intimidating to find an opportunity to serve someone. This issue is what inspired the creation of JustServe dot org, a website that connects organizations with willing volunteers that offers service opportunities to millions across the nation. Today, we're joined by Martin Baron, a Global Marketing Communications Specialist and representative of JustServe, here with us to discuss JustServe and how we can find more opportunities to give to others. Winter Travel Tips (0:14:17) It's easy to dream of being at the beach when it's overcast and chilly outside. But who wants to fly all the way to a travel destination that's colder than where they are right now? Turns out, there are entire tourist towns that flourish in the winter months, and we've been totally missing them! But where are they? We invited an insider onto the show to let us in on the secrets of winter travel and the best destinations. With us today is travel writer and Managing Editor of Cheapism.com, Danny Jensen. Walk It Off (0:31:59) With AC, electricity, and hours on hours of shows on Netflix... the temptation is strong to never leave our houses. But, life as a couch potato isn't good for our health. And after a while, our dry wall scenery becomes dry and bland. If you're experiencing these lackluster feelings, it might be time for you to go outside and refresh your body and mind with nature. Here to explain the power of spending time outdoors is Florence Williams, a journalist and the author of “The Nature Fix”. Her research explores the effect that the natural world has on us. Memes and Teens (0:50:36) Have you seen the memes going around the internet about the coronavirus? There's one that shows a picture of a bunch of friends holding Corona beer with the caption “Me and the squad trying to catch the corona virus so we can skip work.” Maybe you haven't seen it yet, but your teens have probably seen it or something like it! These memes try to make light of situations which are really quite heavy, so how can we help our teens understand the real issues behind these jokes? We've invited Dr. Carla Marie Manly, a clinical psychologist and wellness expert, to help us understand how to talk with our kids about the issues behind the meme. Ride On (1:05:46) If you're looking for a good way to get involved in serving your community and you like horses, you might consider helping with equine therapy. This kind of therapy is unique because it can help with physical, mental, and emotional disabilities. It has tried and true health benefits since its first implementation in Ancient Greece. And there are about 800 facilities across the US that offer it. Here to tell us more about equine therapy and how we can help is Sara Jones, the COO of Ride On, an organization based in Thousand Oaks, California that teaches adaptive horseback riding to children and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities. Making Exercise Fun (1:18:48) We all know that exercise is important but sometimes it can be hard to enjoy! It can be easy to get bored with doing the same workout routine and eventually you might develop a negative attitude towards exercise. Embrace WA (0:00:00) Many of us have friends or family who have been impacted by foster care. Maybe they've taken kids into their home, or maybe they were foster kids themselves. For any of us who are familiar with the system, we know that despite all of the good it does, there is a long way to go before these kids get all the help that they need. Luckily, there are organizations like Embrace Washington who are working to support kids in the foster care system in any way that they can. For this week's JustServe spotlight, we're joined by the Executive Director of Embrace Washington Alene Alexander. Talking to Your Kids about Drugs (0:13:02) Imagine sending your child onto a battlefield without any protection whatsoever. No one would do that! But, how many of us allow our kids to happily go off to school, or to start their first job, without properly preparing them to face all the challenges that might be there? Challenges like drugs and alcohol. These are things we need to start preparing our kids to refuse early. With us is Pat Aussem, Master Addictions Counselor and spokesperson from the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids. Prepping for Job Interviews (0:32:30) Sitting in a job interview, we all want to come off as confident and qualified even though we may be sweating and shaking. Josh Doody, expert in job-interview strategy, joins us to discuss exactly how we can prepare for and nail our next job interview. Indoor Air Pollution (0:50:29) We talk a lot about air pollution—as we should—but have you ever thought about what the air quality is like inside? We spend a lot of time indoors, especially during the wintertime, but the air inside might not be all that much better than the air outside. In fact, the US Environmental Production Agency has named indoor air quality as one of the top five health threats in the country! Here to tell us more about causes and cures for indoor air pollution is Tony Abate, certified indoor environmentalist and Vice President of AtmosAir Solutions. Brand Love (1:05:07) In a world dominated by big brand tycoons like Apple, Google and Coca Cola, making your own brand stand out to consumers can seem daunting. But, don't give up just yet, because our next guest might have the secret to your future success. Anne Candido is the founder of Go for 2, a Brand “Love” Building consultancy that helps more people fall in love with your brand by connecting to their heart, mind, and soul. She's here to tell us how we can do this for our own businesses and products. Repairing Family Bonds (1:25:01) Families aren't always perfect and sometimes we have disagreements, fights, and even become estranged. With so many different personalities in families, conflict is bound to arise. It's how we deal with this conflict however, that's most important. Dr. Ish Major is is a board-certified psychiatrist known for his role on the WE TV show, Marriage Boot Camp. He's with us to share some tips on how we can begin to fix broken family relationships.
In this special holiday episode, Chris, Lisa, Tim and Ken begin by discussing the Light the World Campaign. We explain what it is and share some of our experiences with it so far. We then share some of our favorite personal volunteer experiences. As the temperature goes down, the need for volunteers goes up. To learn about some incredible volunteer organizations that could really use your help this holiday season, please go to https://www.justserve.org/ (type in your zip code to find service opportunities near you)!We wish everyone the happiest of holidays, in whatever form that takes for you! International Experience USA (0:00:00) Traveling to a country you've never been to can be intimidating. Now, imagine traveling to a country you've never been to, in a city with a completely different culture than your own, living with a family you've never met in your life, with the intention of studying at a public school that runs completely different from the one you're used to. Stressful, right? Well, it doesn't have to be. In this week's segment highlighting a wholesome organization we found on JustServe.org, we wanted to spotlight International Experience USA. Focused on bringing unlikely cultures and people together, International Experience organizes families in the US to host foreign exchange students from around the world. Jennifer Iler, the non-profit's Western Regional Director, joins us to tell us more about their mission. Tech Scams (0:13:32) At this time of year, I always find myself doing more online shopping than ever before. It's a wonderful way to make holiday purchases, and buy and send gifts. But I always find myself wondering, what if this website is a scam? With us today one of the biggest names in technology, Anna P. Murray, CEO of EMEDIA and author of The Complete Software Project Manager. She's going to explain to us the upcoming trends in technology, and how to protect ourselves from getting scammed. Stress-Free Holidays (0:34:04) Despite fun traditions, nostalgic carols and tasty treats, the holidays can easily feel like a stressful time of year. So why do we feel this way during what is supposed to be a happy time? And what can we do to make the most out of our holiday season without feeling overwhelmed? Therapist John Sovec joins us to share how we can enjoy a stress-free December. Be a Good Gift Giver (0:50:35) Gifts are an integral part of the holidays. Work Christmas parties, family reunions, and gift exchanges are all great reasons to give and receive presents. But have you ever gotten a gift that you didn't like and want to take back? Or had someone give you a gift that you weren't planning on getting a gift in return? What is the proper etiquette when it comes to gift giving and receiving during the holidays? We are joined by friend of The Lisa Show Dan Senning from the Emily Post Institute. Dan is the great-grandson of Emily Post, and he presents all over the world about etiquette. Mindful Eating (1:06:19) Have you ever said a word so many times that it starts to lose its meaning? (try it, a word that always does this for me is “bubble”) The phrase “mindful eating” is something that we hear so much that I'm not sure I really know what it means anymore. It sounds nice, but what does it actually look like? And how can we eat this way? We've invited Laura Silver, a registered dietitian-nutritionist from New York to help us make sense of this health trend. 2020 Travel Trends (1:24:00) The years may pass by but one thing will never change, our love for travel! With every year comes the excitement of planning new trips full of adventure and fun places to see. As we prepare for the new decade, it's helpful to know about the upcoming travel trends of 2020. Here to tell us what to expect is Amanda Norcross. Amanda is the senior editor for www.familyvacationcritic.com.
We all want to raise humble, grateful children but it’s so easy for kids to hit a “wall of entitlement”, especially this time of year. Creating opportunities for your family to experience the joy of service is a great way to break down that wall, but how do we get started? On this #GivingTuesday, Vanessa chats with Kristin Andrus about creating a culture of service in your family. Kristin, the self-proclaimed “Chief Culture Officer” of the Andrus family, works hard to create a culture of service in their home and is sharing how, with 6 young kids, their family gives back all throughout the year. Kristin's tips: Go to Justserve.org and see what needs are in your area. But don't get overwhelmed! Not all causes will speak to you and that's ok. Pick what you're passionate about and give or do what you can. Kristin also preaches the power of serving n your own family and neighborhoods. You don’t have to travel the globe to make a difference! #GivingTuesday is a great way to kick off the charitable season, but let this just be the beginning. Kristin challenges us to make serving and giving back a family a priority year-round. Join the MomForce Facebook Group and follow along on our instagram page @themomforcepodcast where will post more about service!
Grace and Zach settle down to have a conversation about serving as a couple and handling body image on Thanksgiving. They first talk about how serving together benefits your relationship. It's a valuable gateway to meaningful connection (9:00), and prompts gratitude and humility (15:20). Then, they share a daily service opportunity provided by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the month of December (18:30). Details can be found at lighttheworld.org. Justserve.org is also a fantastic resource and highly recommended. Grace talks about “giving machines,” which are part of the Light the World initiative (22:25). Their locations are listed at here. She reminds us to not feel guilty if scripted service is one thing too many to put on the calendar this year (25:00). Grace next speaks to individuals with anxiety around Thanksgiving, specifically in relation to food (33:00). Her first piece of advice is to prepare a grounding, warm, grateful thought to come back to in moments of rising anxiety (34:30). Grace speaks of a common mindset to avoid, reminding us that our amazing existence should not be defined by a calculator (38:15). Eat like we normally would on Thanksgiving Day (40:10). Our number one priority on Thanksgiving Day and every day should be to be kind to ourselves; food will come and food will go, but we always live with ourselves (41:40). Grace gives advice on how to handle triggering table talk (50:15), and ends with the powerful reassurance that not every Thanksgiving has to be like this (51:20).If you connected with anything in this episode, please help share the podcast by rating it on iTunes or texting a screenshot of the episode to a friend. This month, Chris, Lisa and Tim are joined by special guest, Kate Brennan, Director of Operations at NurturePA. Birth to age three is a critical time in a child’s life. Their experiences as a young child often dictate the type of adults they become. NurturePA helps parents navigate this critical time by providing reliable information and non-judgmental mentoring support through volunteers with whom parents can communicate online. (It really is an ingenious program!) Kate, who has a Master's Degree in Education and Early Intervention, is a passionate advocate for NurturePA. Join us as she helps us understand the importance of NurturePA's mission, and how the program works. Lisa has been serving as a regular volunteer and loves it! She tells us what it's like to serve as a volunteer with NurturePA. NurturePA has a great core of volunteers, but they are looking to expand. If you're a mother (recent or not-so-recent) looking for an opportunity to help parents and infants in a meaningful (and flexible) way that can have a lasting impact, NurturePA could be exactly what you're looking for! For more information about volunteering at NurturePA and a host of other organizations, go to https://www.justserve.org/ (type in your zip code to find service opportunities near you)!
Co-hosts Chris, Lisa and Tim are joined by this month's special guest, Peggy Grimes, the Assistant Director at Greater Washington County Food Bank. After Chris shares a personal (perhaps too personal) tidbit, Tim discusses the ongoing need for blood donations through organizations like the American Red Cross. (Did you know 12,000 lives are saved every day in America through transfusions?) Peggy then tells us about all the great work being done at GWCFB, and shares the heartwarming story of how GWCFB was there for her in her time of need. Talk about giving back! In addition to helping to feed approximately 5,500 people a month through 46 distribution sites, GWCFB runs the Healthy Habits Training Center, a farm (complete with orchard, hydroponics garden, and more), and the County Thrift Market. Of course, with all that going on, there's plenty of work to be done and volunteer opportunities abound! Whether you are an individual interested in teaching a healthy cooking class, or a group ready to pack food boxes for seniors, they have a job for you! Pastor Karie explains the difficult situations faced by women and girls around the world and how education and hygiene kits can make a huge difference in their lives. She and Carrie Powell, a regular volunteer with Days for Girls, also share how much they love volunteering with Days for Girls and give us a glimpse into the camaraderie and friendship that exists among volunteers. Volunteer opportunities exist for both women and men, and sewing skills, while useful, are not required. Please consider volunteering at Days for Girls, it could be exactly what you need in your life! Then Meghan discusses the profoundly uplifting and important work Gallagher Hospice does for people with life-limiting illnesses and their loved ones. Meghan also discusses the important role that volunteers play at Gallagher Hospice. If you are looking to provide comfort and relief to individuals and families who are facing end of life situations, volunteering at a hospice center, such as Gallagher Hospice, could be a perfect fit for you! I’ve known Jason Winter since high school. When we inevitably lost touch Jason was living a very different lifestyle than today. Selling high-end sports cars and living life in the fast lane, allowed Jason to have any kind of lifestyle he wanted. But enjoying the nightlife scene of Atlanta for years found Jason looking for something more. Something more meaningful. And in that search, Hope Thru Soap was born. Serving the people of Atlanta. Jason has crafted not only a lifestyle but an organization around that idea of serving others. And in the process of forgetting about himself and putting others first, His life continues to be blessed as a result. It's interesting that so often once we put our own wants and needs aside to help others, many of those wants and needs are then fulfilled. That is the beauty of Service. You cannot be narcissistic and serve. You cannot be depressed or down about your self when you are helping another human being. And the feeling when you are done in something special indeed. That act of service, no matter how big or small always ends up doing more for the one serving. It may seem counter-intuitive but give it a try. As Jason will be the first to tell you the rewards far exceed anything that is given. Learn more about what it means to give and to serve with the founder of Hope Thru Soap, Jason Winter……

The word "homeless" has such a stigma attached to it. We hear the word and almost completely shut out everything that follows. However, this is a conversation that needs to be had over and over again. Those affected by homelessness are not who you may think. They are our brave veterans—used and forgotten, they are our children—abandoned due to accidental circumstances, they are our mothers, our fathers, our brothers, and sisters. “The best way to change negative stereotypes about people experiencing homelessness and ultimately end homelessness is to teach young people how to be compassionate advocates.” —National Coalition for the Homeless In today's episode we'll discuss the many common misconceptions surrounding homelessness and why it's important to help those in need. I’m joined by Jen McMillan, a small business owner with a heart of gold. Jen, along with her team, help feed the homeless on their days off through her organization Giving Hope. You’ll hear how this hair salon brings the community together and about the importance of doing so. If you’ve ever thought or said any of the following statements, then this episode is for you. “Homeless people are lazy.” “Homeless people are drunks.” “Homeless people are drug addicts.” “Homeless people don’t want to change.” “Homeless people are homeless through their own doing.” “Homeless people don’t want to work.” “Homeless people don’t have jobs.” “Homeless people should just reach out to their family for help.” “Homeless people should just go to a shelter.” “I don’t want to help the homeless because I wouldn’t feel safe.” “Homeless people are rude.” “I don’t have any money to help the homeless.” “I don’t know how to help the homeless.” Jen is the owner of JM Hair Gallery, a Paul Mitchell hair salon, located in Henderson, NV, that has recently doubled in size. She is also the owner of Black Boutique, a clothing boutique for stylists by stylist. Black Boutique is in partnership with Paul Mitchell and is one of the other ways Jen gives back. Proceeds from select items are donated to charitable organizations. You can learn more about both of these businesses by going to their websites below and following them on social media.
