Nina Planck tells us about doing farmers markets as a kid growing up on Wheatland Vegetable Farms in Northern Virginia in the 70s and 80s, and how that experience led to her starting a series of farmers markets in London, England. We talk about how growers can optimize their own farmers markets, emphasizing the need for them to expand their offerings beyond fruits and vegetables to include meat, dairy, seafood, wine, and anything else produced locally. We also talk about how ideas and recipes from some of Nina's books, including The Farmer's Market Cookbook and The Real Food Cookbook, can help market shoppers who are not used to cooking with whole foods break out of the routine of using processed foods. Zooming out, we discuss the impact of agricultural subsidies on the food system, and talk about how to re-make the industrial food chain with local foods values. Connect With Guest:Website: www.LFM.org.ukWebsite: www.NinaPlanck.comInstagram: @NinaPlanckX: https://x.com/ninaplanck Podcast Sponsors:Huge thanks to our podcast sponsors as they make this podcast FREE to everyone with their generous support: Do you have more tasks on your farm than you have time? Recent research has focused on enhancing the capability of smaller models through imitation learning, drawing on the outputs generated by large foundation models (LFMs). A number of issues impact the quality of these models, ranging from limited imitation signals from shallow LFM outputs; small scale homogeneous training data; and most notably a lack of rigorous evaluation resulting in overestimating the small model's capability as they tend to learn to imitate the style, but not the reasoning process of LFMs. To address these challenges, we develop Orca (We are working with our legal team to publicly release a diff of the model weights in accordance with LLaMA's release policy to be published at https://aka.ms/orca-lm), a 13-billion parameter model that learns to imitate the reasoning process of LFMs. Orca learns from rich signals from GPT-4 including explanation traces; step-by-step thought processes; and other complex instructions, guided by teacher assistance from ChatGPT. To promote this progressive learning, we tap into large-scale and diverse imitation data with judicious sampling and selection. Orca surpasses conventional state-of-the-art instruction-tuned models such as Vicuna-13B by more than 100% in complex zero-shot reasoning benchmarks like Big-Bench Hard (BBH) and 42% on AGIEval. Moreover, Orca reaches parity with ChatGPT on the BBH benchmark and shows competitive performance (4 pts gap with optimized system message) in professional and academic examinations like the SAT, LSAT, GRE, and GMAT, both in zero-shot settings without CoT; while trailing behind GPT-4. Our research indicates that learning from step-by-step explanations, whether these are generated by humans or more advanced AI models, is a promising direction to improve model capabilities and skills. 2023: Subhabrata Mukherjee, Arindam Mitra, Ganesh Jawahar, Sahaj Agarwal, Hamid Palangi, Ahmed Awadallah https://arxiv.org/pdf/2306.02707.pdf

Abstract: Light Field Microscopy (LFM) is an imaging technique that offers the opportunity to study fast dynamics in biological systems due to its rapid 3D imaging rate. In particular, it is attractive to analyze neuronal activity in the brain. Unlike scanning-based imaging methods, LFM simultaneously encodes the spatial and angular information of light in a single snapshot. However, LFM is limited by a trade-off between spatial and angular resolution and is affected by scattering at deep layers in the brain tissue. In contrast, two-photon (2P) microscopy is a point-scanning 3D imaging technique that achieves higher spatial resolution, deeper tissue penetration, and reduced scattering effects. However, point-scanning acquisition limits the imaging speed in 2P microscopy and cannot be used to simultaneously monitor the activity of a large population of neurons. This work introduces a physics-driven deep neural network to image neuronal activity in scattering volume tissues using LFM. The architecture of the network is obtained by unfolding the ISTA algorithm and is based on the observation that the neurons in the tissue are sparse. The deep-network architecture is also based on a novel imaging system modeling that uses a linear convolutional neural network and fits the physics of the acquisition process. To achieve the high-quality reconstruction of neuronal activity in 3D brain tissues from temporal sequences of light field (LF) images, we train the network in a semi-supervised manner using generative adversarial networks (GANs). We use the TdTomato indicator to obtain static structural information of the tissue with the microscope operating in 2P scanning modality, representing the target reconstruction quality. We also use additional functional data in LF modality with GCaMP indicators to train the network. Our approach is tested under adverse conditions: limited training data, background noise, and scattering samples. We experimentally show that our method performs better than model-based reconstruction strategies and typical artificial neural networks for imaging neuronal activity in mammalian brain tissue, considering reconstruction quality, generalization to functional imaging, and reconstruction speed. My guest today is Steve Cook, Executive Managing Director at LFM Capital. LFM is a Nashville-based private equity firm founded by operators and engineers. Their focus is on niche manufacturing and industrial services businesses. LFM was founded in 2014 to invest in private, lower-middle-market manufacturing companies. Steve co-founded LFM Capital and brings over 29 years of operating experience, having served in a variety of senior executive and functional roles in manufacturing, supply chain, engineering, technology, and sales. Prior to founding LFM, Steve was a Principal with TVV Capital, Chief Operating Officer of MFG.com, and prior to MFG, Steve spent 11 years as a Southeastern regional Senior Director with The Dell Corporation. We’ll hear from Steve about how he began his career at Dell straight out of MIT and was a self-described type of brash “Iceman” character (from the movie Top Gun) when he got out of flying combat missions in the Navy, and fortunately was coached on becoming a better leader, which propelled him to his current success. Steve talks about what he loves about manufacturing, how to identify great value and potential in companies he purchases, and what he hopes manufacturing may look like in the future. When it comes to progress you can either get ahead of it, embrace it, or stand in its way and ultimately get run over by it. In today’s episode my guest Moshe Amsel and I  look at how you can embrace technology and the changes that occurred in 2020 to encourage growth in your law firm.  In this episode we discuss: The acceleration of change in the legal industry because of working virtual. Setting yourself up for success by embracing change. The potential of a new app called Clubhouse. Why lawyers tend to be risk averse when presented with new technologies. Managing blocks of work time in the home/work environment to become more efficient. The pros and cons of successful online conferences. The question of how our young people will be seeking legal services in the future. Bio: Moshe Amsel  Moshe Amsel is the host of the Profit with Law Podcast and the Law Firm Growth Summit. And that's where we need to focus the conversation. That's where we need to start looking as we grow our businesses, as we develop our systems, our processes, the technology we use. We should always be looking from a lens of what does the future look like and how do I set myself up for the future instead of thinking about what's available to me today and how is business done today? Always be future thinking. And when you do that, you're going to start seeing opportunities. 00:16:30 - 32 seconds - Allison one of the things that I love that you mentioned was the idea of you got the, you got the little tickle like somebody said, hey, there, there's this thing, then you float in the direction of that. You just said, let me try, test, see. And then opportunity sprung open. And we know that in the legal industry we tend to be laggards, right? We tend to be on the low end of the early adoption phase. We don't like to just jump without seeing. We like to test the waters. We like to make sure that there's a lot of people that are born into something before we do it.

L., Schultz, S. R., Foust, A. J. Abstract: Light field microscopy (LFM) enables high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), light efficient volume imaging at fast frame rates, and has been successfully applied to single-cell resolution functional neuronal calcium imaging. Voltage imaging with genetically encoded voltage indicators (GEVIs) stands to particularly benefit from light field microscopy's volumetric imaging capability due to high required sampling rates, and limited probe brightness and functional sensitivity. Previous LFM studies have imaged GEVIs to track population-level interactions only in invertebrate preparations and without single cell resolution. Here we demonstrate sub-cellular resolution GEVI light field imaging in acute mouse brain slices resolving dendritic voltage signals localized in three dimensions. We characterize the effects of different light field reconstruction techniques on the SNR and signal localization and compare the SNR to fluorescence transients imaged in wide field. Our results demonstrate the potential of light field voltage imaging for studying dendritic integration and action potential propagation and backpropagation in 3 spatial dimensions. WARNING: This episode is EXTREMELY GRAPHIC AND DISTURBING. It is definitely not for the faint of heart. Listen discretion is STRONGLY advised. In the fifth episode of Season 2 of True Crime Horror Story, your host JD Horror brings you the third episode of our Sexual Sadists series. Case #1: The Rostov Ripper - Andrei Chikatilo was the most notorious serial killer in Russia's dark history. He would claim over 50 victims in his murderous career, primarily children, often committing necrophilia and cannibalism after his victim's had been stabbed to death. (A. Chikatilo, Russia)Case #2: The Butcher of Hanover - Fritz Haarmann , better know as the Vampire of Hanover, the Werewolf of Hanover, and what I believe would have been his personal favorite given his childhood predilections, the Butcher of Hanover, was convicted of 24 murders, but potentially responsible for as many as 100 deaths. His victims would be butchered and sold on the Black Market as pork after their throats had been ripped out by the Butcher's bare teeth.. (F. Haarmann, Germany)If you like what you hear here on True Crime Horror Story please subscribe and give us a 5 star review. Potter's Inn Soul Care Conversations

Our #1 purpose is to provide resources globally for people who want to learn, grow, and deepen their walk with God.  We’ll be making more progress this coming year, but you’re help is needed now. Would you consider supporting Soul Care Conversations as a Patron? Find out how to support the podcast by clicking on the button above. SHOW NOTES This week’s podcast is with lifelong minister of the gospel Leighton Ford, who shares with Steve his story and how it became a personal history of listening for God’s voice. He recounts the different ways God has spoken to him, and the different ways he has learned to listen. What emerges is not just an account of a long and faithful life of Christian service, but a picture of the Christian life―the life of listening.  It's a conversation you don’t want to miss!   Leighton Ford is president of Leighton Ford Ministries, which seeks to help young leaders worldwide to lead more like Jesus. For many years, Ford communicated Christ around the globe through speaking, writing, and media outreach, addressing millions of people on every continent. He served from 1955 until 1985 as associate evangelist and later vice president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and was featured as the alternate speaker to Billy Graham on the Hour of Decision broadcast. He served for nearly twenty years as chairman of the Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization, an international body of Christian leaders. He chairs the Sandy Ford Fund and has served as a board member for World Vision U. S., the Duke University Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He received the 1990 Two Hungers Award, recognizing his contributions to addressing the physical and spiritual hungers of people around the world. In 1985 he was selected as Clergyman of the Year by Religious Heritage of America and TIME Magazine singled him out as being "among the most influential preachers of an active gospel." Dr. Ford is also author and co-author of numerous books. Places of the Heart is Leighton’s latest four-color book and features the author’s imaginative watercolor paintings, poetry, and reflections on a life formed, redeemed, empowered, and directed by God and for God’s glory.  Leighton lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with his wife, Jean (who Billy Graham introduced him to - she was Billy’s sister!) Their children are a married daughter, Debbie, Kevin who partners with him in LFM, and their older son, Sandy, who died after heart surgery in November 1981.   RESOURCES MENTIONED ON PODCAST Billy Graham Association Leighton Ford Ministries Books by Leighton Ford (mentioned) The Life of Listening The Attentive Life (used in Potter’s Inn Soul Care Institute) Other books by Leighton Becoming the Beloved by Henri Nouwen Simone Weil – French philosopher and activist Cultivating Daily Examen Podcast “The heart has many dungeons. Hva burde vektlegges for fremtiden?
