We explore the tension between risk and restraint, the power of story in industrial design, and what separates mediocre products from cultural icons.Robert shares hard-won wisdom from 40+ years in the field, working with legends like Jimmy Iovine, Paula Scher, and the teams behind Apple and Beats — and how he now helps startups design with both craft and business outcomes in mind.Timestamps:(00:00) – The Fascination of Objects and Their Stories(05:49) – Navigating Client Relationships in Design(11:26) – The Evolution of Design Partnerships(23:20) – The Rise of Beats by Dre: Origins and Inspirations(30:17) – The Evolution of Design and Craftsmanship(41:37) – The Challenge of Perfection in Design(45:30) – Design Perspectives and Personal FavoritesCheck out today's guest, Robert Brunner:Robert's Website: https://www.ammunitiongroup.com/Robert's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robertbrunnerCheck out The Futur:Website: https://www.thefutur.com/Courses: https://www.thefutur.com/shopLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-futur/Podcasts: https://thefutur.com/podcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thefuturishere/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theFuturisHere/Twitter: https://x.com/thefuturishereTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thefuturishereYoutube:https://www.youtube.com/thefuturishereCheck out Chris Do:Website: https://zaap.bio/thechrisdoLinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/thechrisdo/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/BizOfDesignInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/thechrisdo/Twitter:https://x.com/thechrisdoTikTok:https://www.tiktok.com/@thechrisdoThreads:https://www.threads.net/@thechrisdoZaap: https://zaap.bio/thechrisdoClubhouse:

Ever feel like your home is battling Instagram's "after" photos? I certainly do! My chat with Courtney Florey of Declutter and Dwell tackled this, as she believes these unrealistic standards can hinder progress by fostering comparison and pressure for perfection. We agreed homes are meant to be lived in, not just admired, and it's normal if yours isn't magazine-ready. This pressure can deter us from even starting, fearing too much time, money, or effort, or leading to burnout. Her practical advice includes aligning your home with your life's priorities and starting with small, easy areas to build confidence and momentum. One day, in band camp. LOL! Just kidding. Were you in band or choir in high school? Taking it back old school with a BOLD MESSAGE today, beloved. I absolutely loved being in band and playing my saxophone, but CHOIR?So nerve-racking.What's the point?Let me frame it up, and I know you'll 100% relate.I was a nervous kid who had just joined the school choir, feeling totally out of my depth because I didn't know the songs. The choir teacher, Mr. Krinke, saw my potential, so he put me next to the "first chair" - the best in the class - to sharpen my skill set.During practice, Mr. Krinke caught me and some others lip-syncing, trying to hide that we weren't sure of the notes.Mr. Krinke stopped us and said, "Kassandra, I need you to sing out loud, even if it's not perfect.Make those mistakes with confidence. When you do, I'll hear what's wrong, and we can fix it together. But I can't help you find your voice if you don't sing."So, I took a deep breath and belted out the notes, messing up plenty but giving it my all.Mr. Krinke nodded and showed me what to tweak, and I started getting better. This taught me the [VALUE OF A VOW] TO NO MATTER WHAT - COMMIT, LEARN AND TAKE THE NEXT SMALL STEP.It's the difference between avoiding mistakes, like lip-syncing to life to avoid looking bad, and owning every ounce of our path of learning, like singing boldly even if it isn't yet where you desire to be.Perfection kills. Breath and joy of learning the notes of life is a feedback loop of God's Grace of BECOMING in our creation. When I was brave, I could learn and grow because I was open to Mr. Krinke's feedback. But if I stayed scared, I'd just stay stuck.I have gratitude to Mr. Krinke, as I learned to take that leap and find my voice.I also know you've had an experience like this.Find your "first chair" - meaning people that have what you desire and resource the heck out of it to make you better, not compare or fake someone else's path. Its virtues: have conviction and be bold in your calling. This goes back to 10,000 hours - anything you practice, you'll eventually learn lessons on the journey and become excellent, not the best, but excellent and humbly proud.Belt your love for life. We all need your note in this symphony in life. xo Love, Kassandra. Get full access to The Light Between at thelightbetween.substack.com/subscribe
In episode 301 of Business Coaching Secrets, host Karl Bryan and Rode Dog celebrate their podcasting consistency and dive deep into questions from listeners—including a big one about whether a young entrepreneurial couple should buy a home or rent and invest. The episode also features a highlight reel of the most impactful strategies and mindset shifts from over 300 episodes. Karl shares proven business-building principles, mental frameworks for success, and a healthy dose of “moment of Zen” wisdom for coaches looking to accelerate growth and happiness. Key Topics Covered Should Entrepreneurs Buy or Rent Their Home? Karl unpacks the personal and financial considerations of this classic question, emphasizing that there's no one-size-fits-all answer. He explains that buying a home isn't just a financial calculation—it carries significant psychological value, especially for young business owners looking to provide stability. However, the decision should fit their financial reality and leverage their specific strengths—in this case, the couple's landscaping skills could be used to add value immediately to a property. Business vs. Stocks vs. Real Estate Karl breaks down the three pathways to wealth: stocks (betting on others), real estate (slow, steady, leveraged returns), and business (potential for rapid compounding). He argues that building your own business is statistically the fastest way to wealth—then using that cash flow to invest in real estate is the billionaire's formula. Real Estate Acquisition Frameworks Get Karl's tactical real estate advice: Only buy if you can secure an instant gain (buying below value), look for houses where you can add a room or bathroom, and always try to buy wholesale, not retail. Proximity to schools, cul-de-sacs, and the power of leveraging professional skills are all discussed. Major Needle-Moving Strategies from 300 Episodes Karl recaps favorite discoveries—such as Gary Vaynerchuk's “loss leader” strategy, buying customers with irresistible front-end offers, and why coaches should focus relentlessly on building and demonstrating value, not just learning theory. Mindset, Motivation & Zen Rode Dog and Karl discuss powerful mindset exercises, like envisioning your 90-year-old self as both a source of gratitude and as your wisest mentor. They stress the difference between “studying” and “training”—taking actionable steps beats endless preparation. The Trap of Perfection & The Power of Consistency Reflecting on 301 episodes, they celebrate outlasting “podfade” by showing up consistently. Perfection isn't the goal—progress and real-world impact are. Notable Quotes “Consistency over talent all day long—twice on Sunday.” – Karl Bryan “Three ways to make money: stocks, real estate, business. The richest people in the world build businesses, then buy real estate.” “Clarity first, then you add the power, then you add the gasoline.” “You don't stop at learning. You start at learning and then you get to understanding.” “Most people are afraid of not being enough—and of having love taken away. You've got dreams to pursue, not people to impress.” Actionable Takeaways 1. Focus energy on your business first. If you're an entrepreneur, channel resources into doubling your business before spreading thin with passive investments. Business is the vehicle that generates maximum leverage. 2. Only buy real estate below value and with value-add potential. Look for wholesale deals where improvements (like adding a room or landscaping) increase equity. Use your unique skills to your advantage. 3. Use “loss leader” strategies. Borrow Gary Vee's model: attract clients with irresistible front-end offers and then upsell to high-margin services through storytelling and value. 4. Train, don't just study. Committing information to muscle memory—whether with sales, client demonstrations, or mindset work—outperforms passive learning. 5. Tap your 90-year-old self as a mentor. Visualize your older, wiser self for daily gratitude and perspective. Let that version guide your daily choices. 6. Consistency > Perfection. Keep showing up and iterating—winning comes from staying in the game. I have never heard this before." - Greg Trevan Hatch, professor at BYU focused on the Ancient Middle-East, lays out a framework for Matthew 5:48, "Be ye therefore perfect." I had never heard this approach before but Trevan backs this up with evidence from the scriptures. We can look at "perfect" through a modern, Western mind as we often have, or as "complete" which is more popular today and fits within a temple framework of the Sermon On The Mount. But Trevan's explanations given though the context of other verses of scripture using the Greek word, "Teleios" showing support for a completely new understanding of the verse. A new short series of podcasts we'll be running to commemorate the 2000/01 Tiger Slam where Tiger Woods claimed all four major trophies in a 12 month stretch. In part one we kick off with Pebble Beach. Starting the year off as the defending US PGA Champion, Vijay Singh would clinch the first major of the year, but Tiger was playing by far and away the best golf on tour. As such, it's no surprise he teed off at pebble on the Thursday as the bookies 3-1 favourite. In what would become dubbed 'Perfect at Pebble', Woods' win in 2000 broke all the record books, and yet the Tigerslam was almost over before it even began on the 18th tee in the second round....If you've enjoyed this episode, please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify! You can follow us along below @cookiejargolf Instagram / Facebook / Twitter / YouTube / Website

Giving less than your best is a betrayal to yourself. Yet, with perfectionism and the bags of tendencies that come with it, there seems to be an unspoken fear of striving for excellence and doing all that you can every single day. You'll be told "that's too much." "you shouldn't expect so much from yourself." "it's not realistic." Even if you enjoy waking up to a clean kitchen that reminds you of fresh starts and new days... someone will tell you that the pressure to clean it every night before bed is just too much. This is why understanding the difference between a mentality of Excellence and a mentality of Perfection will set you free. This episode takes a look at why we use perfectionism, how you can practically condition your mind out of it and what it looks like to strive for excellence AND fall short. I hope you enjoy it! Details for my coaching membership where this episode was inspired are right here. Huge thanks to Danielle for being a light and someone we can learn alongside. Tessa Romero

Episode 100: Reboot Your Meal PlanningWe made it to 100 episodes! Wow!! We're grateful to you all for being here and supporting our work to challenge diet culture and make family nutrition less stressful. In our latest episode, we're celebrating with a topic that comes up a lot—meal planning. But not the Pinterest-perfect kind (no judgement here if you love that kind of meal planning). Anna and I are talking about realistic, flexible planning that supports you instead of stresses you out.We share our personal routines, what “go-to meals” mean in our homes, and how diet culture can sneak into the way we think about food and planning. Whether you're a an avid list-maker or more spontaneous, there's something in here for you. What are your “go-to meals”? If you're interested in a deeper dive into all the aspects of feeding your family, from navigating sweets, meal planning, assessing your child's growth, to supporting your picky eater, join the Sunny Side Up Nutrition Membership: Take the Frenzy Out of Feeding. Links we mention in this episode:* Our Feeding Framework* Easy Black Beans and Rice* Spinach Lasagna* Sweet Potato and Black Bean Tacos* White Bean, Sausage & Kale Soup* Black Beans, Corn, and Tomatoes —A 15 minute recipe 7 different ways* Pinney Davenport Nutrition (DC Area)* Lutz, Alexander & Associates Nutrition Therapy (Raleigh, NC)* Photo by Gabrielle Henderson on UnsplashTranscriptElizabeth: Hi, Anna. So welcome, everyone. We are here today to chat about rebooting your meal planning. So, Anna, I'm just going to jump right in with the first question slash topic.Elizabeth: Feeding Framework Step #1 is to provide structure, not perfection. In our previous podcast episode, we talked about the feeding framework—and we'll link to it in the show notes in case you didn't have a chance to listen. How does that connect with our meal planning philosophy? And how does diet culture interfere with meal planning?Anna: That's two really important questions! I think a lot of people hear “meal planning” and immediately think it has to look a certain way. Like there's a right way to plan and a right way to follow the plan. A lot of folks also associate meal plans with dieting. But the way you and I think about meal planning is more about support. It's a structure that helps feeding ourselves and our families feel less chaotic.Elizabeth: Yes—exactly. I always regret it when I skip meal planning. Everything feels more chaotic.Anna: Totally. But diet culture can really mess with how we think about meal planning. On social media, you see these perfect plans that take forever to make, or these rigid schedules where every meal is pre-determined. There's this assumption that you have unlimited time and resources. But that's not how we define it. Everyone's meal plan will look different.Elizabeth: Absolutely. I mean, almost every week I end up making something different than I planned. Life happens.Anna: Yes! And one more thing—we share meal ideas every week in our Substack newsletter. Five lunches, five dinners, three breakfasts. The goal isn't to be perfect or different every day. It's to make life easier.Elizabeth: Right, we don't make seven different breakfasts every week! That sounds exhausting.Anna: We also say all the time: meal planning only needs to take 10–15 minutes. Let me walk you through what I do.Anna: I start by looking at our evening activities for the week—soccer practice, concerts, things like that. Then I plan about four dinners. I don't usually assign them to specific nights, but I try to think ahead to busy nights and plan something easy.Anna: Next, I make a list of the ingredients I need and then check the fridge, pantry, and freezer for staples—like milk, bread, eggs, lunch stuff. Then I place a grocery order online, usually on Sunday.Elizabeth: My method isn't as structured! I go to the store more often and I'm lucky to have a farmer's market nearby. I get meat, fish, and produce there in the warmer months. I also enjoy trying new recipes, so sometimes planning takes longer because I want to cook something new.Anna: That's what works for you! I'll also do a Costco or Trader Joe's run once a month. It's a big day when I do both. I joke that I've been hunting and gathering all day!Elizabeth: I feel that. And having frozen or prepared foods from those stores makes weeknights easier. I also plan four dinners and rely on my go-to meals to fill in the rest. Speaking of which—let's talk about go-to meals.Anna: A go-to meal, for me, is something I usually have the ingredients for and can make in 15–20 minutes. One of mine is Black Beans and Rice—it's super simple. We've made it for years. You use canned beans, cumin, salsa or tomatoes, and rice. Great for leftovers too.Elizabeth: Yes, for me it's similar—easy ingredients I have on hand. Everyone's go-to meals will look different. The key is they shouldn't stress you out.Anna: Exactly. We also both rely on the “cook once, eat twice” idea. If I'm making a bigger dinner on Monday, I want it to be something we can use for another night or lunches. Spinach lasagna is one—great for lunchboxes. Or grilled chicken becomes BBQ chicken salad or pizza. Everyone can build their own bowl.Elizabeth: I do something similar with black beans and corn and tomatoes. It turns into burritos, rice bowls, even a topping for chicken. We also do Sweet Potato and Black Bean Tacos—I double the batch and use the extras for bowls with pre-cooked rice.Anna: Love that. Soups and pasta dishes work well too. I like anything that helps with lunches.Elizabeth: If someone only has five minutes, what's one thing they can do this week to feel less stressed about meal planning?Anna: Make a list of your go-to meals. Just write them down—stream of consciousness. Then you can build from there and even make a list of pantry staples to keep on hand.Elizabeth: Yes! I always check my go-to list when I feel stuck. Anything else we should add?Anna: Just remember: there's no right way to do this. You don't have to make black beans and rice. Find what's easy and accessible for you.Elizabeth: So true. What are you making tonight?Anna: Actually, we have a school dinner event. But next time I cook, it'll probably be tacos. Always a favorite in my house.Elizabeth: I'm making coconut rice with roasted chicken thighs, carrots, purple broccoli from the farmers market, and a peanut sesame sauce. It's a few components, but not a ton of work. The Lundberg coconut rice is already cooked and microwaveable. (not sponsored)Anna: That sounds amazing.Elizabeth: Let us know what you're cooking! In this episode of PPC Live: The Podcast, host Anu chats with Greg Finn, co-founder of Cypress North, about the biggest mistakes he's witnessed in PPC and how they became learning opportunities. Greg shares two major f-ups: a Halloween costume company that accidentally set their monthly budget as a daily budget (spending $300K instead of $30K), and his own team's Microsoft Ads import error that sent one client's ads to a completely different advertiser's account.More importantly, Greg reveals how these disasters shaped his management philosophy and company culture, emphasizing transparency, open communication, and treating mistakes as growth opportunities rather than failures. On Mistake Management:Intent matters more than outcome - if someone is trying to do the right thing, the mistake is secondaryTransparency builds trust - own mistakes immediately, provide full documentation, and offer immediate refundsCreate processes after mistakes to prevent repetition, not punishmentOn Company Culture:Foster an environment where employees feel safe reporting mistakes immediatelyFocus on education and growth rather than perfectionTreat team members as teammates, not competitorsOn AI Usage:AI works best as an assistant, not a replacement for human creativityAvoid AI-generated content that looks obviously artificialMaintain authentic brand voice rather than relying on AI for everythingOn Conversions:"All conversions are not created equal" - optimize for sales-qualified leads, not just any conversionSync CRM systems with ad platforms to focus on actual business outcomesQuality over quantity when it comes to lead generationThe episode emphasizes that mistakes are inevitable in PPC, but how you handle them defines your success as both a marketer and a leader00:00 Introduction to PPC Live The Podcast00:50 Guest Introduction: Greg Finn of Cypress North03:01 Greg's Background and Expertise05:33 Discussing $300,000 worth and uploading to the wront account PPC Mistakes19:53 Owning Your Mistakes20:14 The Illusion of Perfection on Social Media21:42 Encouraging Open Communication in the Workplace25:44 The Importance of Team Mentality27:29 Mismanagement of Talent30:32 The Role of AI in Marketing35:03 Conclusion and Final Thoughts and LinkedInBook a coaching call with AnuPPC Live The Podcast (formerly PPCChat Roundup) features weekly conversations with paid search experts sharing their experiences, challenges, and triumphs in the ever-changing digital marketing landscape. The next PPC Live event is on June 26th in Leeds, UKThe next PPC Live London event is July 31stFollow us on LinkedInFollow us on TwitterJoin our WhatsApp GroupSubscribe to our Newsletter

In this episode, I talk with Whitney English—author, designer, and (as I like to call her) my organizational better half. Her new book, Organize First, Decorate Second, isn't your typical organizing manual. It's thoughtful, deeply personal, and grounded in real life—something I immediately connected with.We explore the idea that our homes are not just reflections of who we are, but tools that help shape us. Whitney shares why she prefers the word edit over declutter, how tension (not balance) is her guiding principle, and why you should think twice before buying drawer dividers. We also get into how new urbanism and walkable cities inspired her approach to home design, why she gave up on making her bed, and how organization can actually free up space for beauty and joy—not get in the way of it.If you've ever struggled with keeping things tidy, if you love your stuff but want it to serve you better, or if you just want permission to let go of what's not working, this conversation will feel like a deep breath. Read OnlineLifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed saying: “Holy Father, I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me. And I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one…” John 17:20–22What an amazing prayer! Don't miss the meaning of this prayer. This is Jesus' High Priestly Prayer that He prayed just before He was arrested. This prayer concludes the Last Supper at which Jesus instituted the Most Holy Eucharist. It is truly His Eucharistic prayer that culminates in the offering of His life on the Cross. This prayer is not only a prayer; it is also a teaching about the life that we are invited to share in with our Lord.Note that in the passage quoted above, Jesus prayed not only for the disciples “but also for those who will believe in me through their word.” In other words, Jesus was praying for you and for everyone who would hear and respond to the Gospel. And His prayer was that you share in the perfect union that Jesus shares with the Father. He prayed that all may be one in the same way that He and the Father are one. Again, this is an amazing prayer! To begin, it is important to understand the concept of unity. Deep within each of us is a longing to be united to another. The draw to marriage, the love of a parent and child, the desire for friends and the bonding together as a community all point to this desire. We want unity. We want to be one. Unfortunately, our natural ability to form a holy union with others was deeply wounded by Original Sin. For that reason, the most central mission of the Son of God was not only to restore that which was lost but to transform it into something even greater. Now, because of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, we are not only able to live in peace with each other, we are also able to share in a new spiritual union with God Himself. This union goes to the heart and soul of who we are.Look within you and try to discover the innate desire you have for communion with others. When properly understood, pondering this desire is very consoling and enticing. If you can separate selfishness, lust and possessiveness from the equation, you are left with a very holy desire for union with others. Try to discover this desire within. As you discover this desire that God placed within you, learn from Jesus' High Priestly Prayer. Understand that this desire is only completely fulfilled by entering into the life and unity of the Most Holy Trinity. We are called to share in God's very life. When that happens, we also share in a perfect and holy union with one another. In this life, a holy marriage is an earthly prefiguration of that union that is to come. In Heaven, the divine marriage to which we are called will enable us to fulfill every human desire we have. Reflect, today, upon the draw you have within you to live in union with others. As you ponder this desire, know that it can only be fulfilled by accepting the invitation from the Most Holy Trinity to share in Their divine life. Prayerfully read Jesus' prayer to the Father and know that He was praying this for you. Join with Him in this prayer and make it your own so that your every human desire will begin to be fulfilled in God. Most Holy Trinity, You have invited me to share in Your glorious life. You invite me to share in the unity that You share. Please purify me of every selfish desire and fill me with a desire only for You. May this union with You perfectly fulfill me and enable me to obtain true unity with others. It's Friday and we fooled them again with an RGF LITE. We talk all things spilled wine, faded spotlights, and a reminder that even in Hollywood, the real story's happening just off-camera. We're talking accidental run-ins with TV legends, spiritual redirections in Hollywood living rooms, and what happens when you get pulled into the circle—literally. We talk the myth of perfection and why being multifaceted isn't a flaw, it's the design. There's the helper, the hider, the guy with the SAG voucher and the shame spiral, and yes—even the one who just wanted to help clean up the mess. It's about identity, visibility, and the slow courage it takes to admit you're still learning how to be seen. We talk the fall of the old gods—how the elite cling to relevance while the rest of us are learning to find power in authenticity. We talk all things family dynamics, imposter syndrome, and the quiet kind of success that looks like staying grateful even when you're sitting in the shadows. RGF Bonus: Mrs. Brady as spiritual first responder, Mark Wahlberg shoulder squeezes, couch drama that wasn't from Living Spaces , and confirmation that yes—Jack Lord probably had real hair. In this episode, I talk about why discipline isn't about control but it's about care, stewardship, and presence, how hustle culture distorted our understanding of what discipline truly is, what holy, quiet, purpose-led discipline actually looks like day to day, why the work you're called to build won't thrive under pressure but it will thrive under devotion and more.CONNECT WITH ME…→ Instagram — @mattgottesman→ Text Me — 480-530-7352→ My Substack — mattgottesman.substack.com → Apparel — thenicheisyou.comRESOURCES…→ Recommended Book List — CLICK HERE→ Workshops — CLICK HERE→ Masterclass — CLICK HEREWORKSHOPS + MASTERCLASS:→ Need MORE clarity? - Here's the FREE… 6 Days to Clarity Workshop - clarity for your time, energy, money, creativity, work & play→ Write, Design, Build: Content Creator Studio & OS - Growing the niche of you, your audience, reach, voice, passion & incomeOTHER RELATED EPISODES:The Real Cost of Misaligned TimeApple: https://apple.co/3Z12YZCSpotify: https://bit.ly/4mCjOYN
Joseph Fielding Smith is the architect of controversial LDS orthodoxy. He has some controversial writings about Blacks and Ezra Taft Benson. We'll also delve into his role with Lowell Bennion, a BYU professor who was fired. Was JFS responsible or was it someone else? Matthew Bowman answers. We'll also dive into his role in shaping orthodoxy in the 20th century. Check out our conversation... https://youtu.be/toqjRr1B8Eo Joseph Fielding Smith: Architect of Controversial LDS Orthodoxy Joseph Fielding Smith described as a "lightning rod" due to some views considered politically incorrect today, particularly regarding race. Dr. Matt Bowman, author of "Joseph Fielding Smith, a Mormon Theologian," sheds light on Smith's impact on the church. One of the most uncomfortable aspects of Smith's legacy is his writings about Black individuals, especially concerning the priesthood. In his work, The Way to Perfection, Smith explicitly stated his subscription to the theory that people of African descent were less righteous in the pre-existence. He used language suggesting they were "not entitled to be born white." Smith was a staunch "defender of the racial restrictions" in the Church and became a major exponent of the idea, which the source traces back to Orson Hyde, that Black people possessed souls less righteous in the pre-existence. This stance led to prominent public clashes, notably with church educator Lowell Bennion at a symposium in the early 1950s. Their argument over the ban contributed to Bennion's eventual dismissal by Ernest Wilkinson, who was president of BYU and commissioner of church education. Wilkinson viewed Bennion as too liberal on race and saw Smith as an ally in this regard. While Wilkinson was the person who carried out the dismissal, the collision with Fielding Smith helped instigate the decision. Disagreement with Benson Smith also had complex relationships, even with those seen as ideologically sympathetic. Despite being viewed as a fellow conservative, Smith had significant disagreements with Ezra Taft Benson. A letter from Smith exists in which he hoped Benson's "blood will be purified" upon his return from a mission in Europe in the 1960s. Smith was skeptical of the Church becoming heavily involved in American politics, viewing Benson's fascination with politics as distasteful and inappropriate for an apostle. He considered it "unseemly" and "disreputable." Smith also saw Benson as a conspiracy theorist, distinguishing standard conservative politics (like that of Dwight Eisenhower or David McKay) from conspiracy theory. Smith hoped Benson's time away would rid him of these inclinations, allowing him to return as an apostle rather than an aspiring amateur politician. This highlights that "real deep divides" can exist even within the conservative camp. Controversial LDS Orthodoxy Perhaps Smith's most enduring theological contribution was his role in developing the idea of orthodoxy within the Latter-day Saint tradition. Orthodoxy, an older Protestant concept particularly associated with John Calvin, posits that being a faithful member requires believing certain things and that incorrect beliefs can jeopardize salvation. This was not a central idea in the early Christian Church's first century. Smith, possibly influenced by Protestant fundamentalism, began insisting in the mid-20th century that belief is actually really important and that believing "the correct ideas" were crucial because incorrect beliefs could "ruin your salvation." He defended this notion vigorously. Historically, while early Christianity saw debates over ideas like the Trinity, and Roman Catholicism emphasized sacraments and art for teaching, the strong push for average members to understand and adhere to correct doctrine emerged from the Reformed Protestant tradition. Smith's emphasis on orthodoxy gained significant traction in the church. When he became President, many members of the Quorum of the Twelve were individuals he ...

In this episode of The Disciples Journal, I'm unpacking what true repentance really means—and why it's more than just saying “I'm sorry.” We're breaking down the difference between worldly sorrow and godly sorrow, what it means to “make room” for God in your life, and why repentance is ultimately about relationship, not religion.
