TNR Gold Corp (TSX-V:TNR, OTC:TRRXF) executive chairman Kirill Klip talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the latest developments at Ganfeng's Mariana lithium project in Argentina. With production now underway, TNR Gold is set to start receiving royalty cash payments, marking a significant shift for the company. Klip highlighted that TNR Gold is evolving from a junior mining project generation company to a cash flow-generating royalty company. He emphasized, "It's really the dramatic achievement for our company," underscoring the milestone achieved this month. The Mariana lithium project, operated by Ganfeng, boasts an 8.1 million tonne lithium carbonate equivalent resource and has commenced its first production phase with a capacity of 20,000 tonnes of lithium chloride per year. Environmental sustainability is a key focus, with Ganfeng running Argentina's largest solar farm at the project site, ensuring a 24/7 renewable energy supply. Klip also mentioned Argentina's new tax incentives under President Javier Milei, which could support Ganfeng's potential second-phase expansion at Mariana. Additionally, Fundamental Research recently raised TNR Gold's buy rating from $0.24 to $0.28, highlighting the company's financial potential. For more insights, visit Proactive's YouTube channel. TNR Gold Corp (TSX-V:TNR, OTC:TRRXF) executive chairman Kirill Klip talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company's transformative progress tied to the Mariana Lithium project in Argentina. Klip highlighted that Ganfeng Lithium has reaffirmed plans to commence production at the project by the end of the year, a key milestone for TNR Gold. This marks a potential shift for the company into becoming a cash-flow-generating royalty entity. Klip detailed Ganfeng Lithium's expansion plans, which include doubling production capacity to 40,000 tonnes of lithium chloride annually at Mariana Lithium and committing an additional $3.2 billion in investment for Argentina in total. Addressing lithium market trends, Klip cited a resurgence in electric vehicle sales in China and rising demand projections. He emphasized Albemarle's estimate of 100 new lithium projects needed by 2030 to meet global demand growth, suggesting higher lithium prices will be essential for industry sustainability.

I take a deep dive into Ganfeng's history and what drove their success. I question why the world's largest lithium company, Albemarle, doesn't have the same vision and ability to get things done as Ganfeng. The episode opens with MLC CEO Paul Hogan briefly explaining why lithium may be a significant part of his company's future.

Ganfeng posted a note to the Hong Kong stock market that said net profits declined by up to 80 percent in 2023 because the “cyclical” nature of the lithium industry, and the “growth rate of demand slowing down,” caused a “significant decrease in the price of lithium-salt products.” EV sales slowed around the world in 2023, a trend slowed only by dramatic price cuts from expensive market-leading brands like Tesla and a push to adopt Tesla's charging port design as the industry standard, a move that would theoretically reduce consumer anxiety about being able to find compatible charging ports on long drives. source: breitbart.com Initial & Continuing Jobless Claims Surge As Layoffs Accelerate The number of Americans filing for jobless claims for the first time in the last week was 224k (12k above expectations and 9k above the prior week). The RBA meeting minutes were released yesterday hinting at the potential for further rate hikes to come, possibly taking the nation's cash rate to 4.60%, as the outlook for price pressures to become embedded raises concerns for the RBA especially if wages continue rising against stagnant productivity output. Stagnant productivity was a key inclusion in the RBA meeting minutes as members discussed the importance of growing productivity amid output per hour worked not increasing over the past 3 years, hence leading to GDP data growth actually worsening in Q1FY23. The ASX closed 0.86% higher yesterday, extending the ASX rally of late into a 7th straight session, buoyed by a surge in energy stocks with the sector closing just shy of 2% higher on Tuesday. In Australia, retail stocks took another hit yesterday after Best & Less (ASX:BST) downgraded profit guidance by 65% as the consumer discretionary sector as a whole feels the brunt of declining consumer spend. The company now expects net profit between $3.6m and $4.2m in H2FY23, down from the initial guidance issued of $10m to $12m.Over in New York on Tuesday, stocks are trading lower on the first trading session of the week on Wall St as the recent lengthy rally took a slight breather ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's congressional testimony. The Dow Jones fell 0.72% on Tuesday while the S&P500 lost 0.47% and the Nasdaq declined 0.16%. On the earnings front, FedEx reports FY23 results after the closing bell on Tuesday. Adding to investor uncertainty was homebuilding projects data in the US out for May showing a surge in single-family homebuilding projects. In Europe, markets closed lower across the board on Tuesday as investor sentiment remains cautious particularly following recent data from China and the lacklustre return to full operational capacity in the region weighing on global economies. The STOXX600 fell 0.6% on Tuesday, Germany's DAX fell 0.55%, the French CAC lost 0.27% and, in the UK, the FTSE100 lost 0.25%. What to watch today: Ahead of the local trading session the SPI futures are anticipating the local index to open 0.4% lower amid global markets turbulence overnight. On the commodities front this morning, oil is down 1.03% at US$71.18/barrel, gold is down 0.67% at US$1937/ounce, copper is up 2.24% at US$3.87/pound, and iron ore is flat at US$117/tonne.Economic data out today includes UK annual inflation rate data with the market expecting a decline to 8.4% in May from 8.7% in April.Investors in the UK will be awaiting the rate decision out of the Bank of England tomorrow with the expectation for a 25-basis point rate hike which will take the British cash rate to 4.75% for the month ahead.AU$1.00 is buying US$0.68, 95.85 Japanese Yen, 53.70 British Pence and NZ$1.10. Trading Ideas:Bell Potter has downgraded the price target on Mineral Resources (ASX:MIN) from $95 to $90 per share but maintain a buy rating on the mining giant after the company updated the market on its lithium business including the termination of the Mount Marion toll treatment agreement with Ganfeng Lithium Co. but MIN will still sell its Mount Marion spodumene concentrate to Ganfeng at market prices. Mineral Resources also updated the market on a second natural gas discovery at North Erregulla Deep-1, and early results of exploration for lithium at Mount Marion confirmed exploration potential at depth. And Bell Potter has initiated coverage of COSOL (ASX:COS)with a Buy rating and a price target of $1 noting the specialised digital IT solutions and data management company offers a compelling value proposition in the Enterprise Asset Management industry with strong financial growth, a diverse client base, strategic partnerships and actively supports its clients' sustainability goals.

"They had a golden period where they could pick up assets globally, but now the West is catching up." Example: Government of Canada orders the divestiture of investments by foreign companies in Canadian critical minerals companies.21:10 -- About Tianqi's $4bn acquisition of SQM's stake in Chile. [Disclosure: I wrote about this case in 2018 here, here and most recently in my latest newsletter, here.] On the future of the Lithium Triangle (Chile, Argentina and Bolivia) for the global lithium supply chain. The unclear future of lithium in Chile, the government has hinted on the creation of a new Chilean national lithium company. "It's a once in a 100-year opportunity, are they just going to sit back and lose out on market share? This opportunity does not come very often."27:09 -- On the new US industrial policy to foster the EV and battery industry (and divest from China). The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, CHIPS & Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act (“the single largest investment in climate and energy in American history”) combined will invest more than $135 billion to build America's EV future, including critical minerals sourcing and processing and battery manufacturing. The impact for the global supply chain, particularly in Latin America, Africa and rest of the world.33:03-- On geopolitics, ESG and sustainability of the global battery supply chain and EVs generally. "Clean energy clusters will become very important."40:09 -- On energy security, cleaner battery producers (example Northvolt from Sweden), the rise of Gigafactories, the shift to EVs from global OEMs (A Reuters analysis of 37 global automakers found that they plan to invest nearly $1.2 trillion in electric vehicles and batteries through 2030) and the future of jobs in this industry. "Vehicle manufacturing employment, which stands at 13.6 million globally, already employs 10% of its workforce in the manufacture of EVs, their components and batteries." (see IEA world energy employment report). "It is a race for the jobs of the future, and that's where the West has lost out. That's what making this industry so critical." "But the West will definitely catch up, I'm very optimistic about the U.S."46:03 -- On whether the U.S. will encourage more mining in the US to bridge this gap. "The mining industry has not done a good job at convincing the public that this is what is needed. People who support clean energy find it hard to support mining. That's the crux of the issue."48:14 -- On Tesla, and whether they will move upstream in the supply chain with more refining or mining. Pilbara's new Managing Director Dale Henderson discusses record cash generation, path to 1M ton spoduemene production, POSCO hydroxide JV, Calix midstream R&D project as well as broader market (supply, demand and price) and corporate strategy (M&A vs. dividends/buybacks) #Lithium #Tesla #electricvehicles Video Index 0:00 - 1:25 Introduction 1:26 - 11:15 Q&A with Rodney - There's lots of cash sitting in the treasury, is this earmarked for spending, or will Pilbara become a dividend paying company? Historically selling spodumene to China was the only game in town; in your mind, is that changing? Pilbara is partnering with Calix in the midstream space - is this venture something that could become a meaningful line item for the company? What are the products available from this stream, and what are the benefits of going this route? The current difficulties around securing labour in WA - is that a short-term issue that will resolve itself over time? The BMX auction platform has been a huge success - will Pilbara expand sales volumes using this method? 11:16 - 22:25 Q&A with Howard - How much "free" tonnage does Pilbara have to sell on the BMX auction platform? What strategy maximizes value for shareholders? When you think of your relationship with Posco, do you look at the operating margin in a similar way that Mineral Resources does with its arrangement with Ganfeng? 22:26 - 24:57 Q&A with Rodney - It looks as if spodumene concentrate grades are drifting downwards closer to 5.5%, is that the new 6% or will grades climb upward in the future? The only way RK Equity sees prices falling is if undisciplined tonnage comes online. Do you see any risk of that happening? 24:58 - Q&A with Howard - How does Pilbara view potential M&A? Have you thought about shipping ore from WA to Europe or the USA? Pilbara's thoughts on long-term prices and reflections on the markets. Is there a takeover risk? 37:20 - End Please join us on Patreon at www.patreon.com/lithiumionrocks Please subscribe here on YouTube to Rock Stock Channel to ensure full access to all our free content. Chris Reed, the CEO of Neometals (ASX: NMT), is my guest on episode 78. Chris was the mastermind behind the development of the Mt Marion mine. He wisely brought in two heavyweight partners - Ganfeng and Mineral Resources to ensure guaranteed offtake and timely construction / start-up. Mt Marion is the cornerstone of Ganfeng's hard rock supply and the first strategic lithium asset in production for Mineral Resources. Chris timed Neometals' very profitable exit from the project well and retained pro-rata future offtake rights. One of the most forward thinking minds in the lithium world, Chris plans to lead Neometals into the broader battery metals market via “urban mining” – recycling lithium batteries to supply high quality cobalt, nickel and lithium while helping the battery industry greatly lower their carbon footprint. We discuss the current oversupply of spodumene concentrate and where pricing needs to be for newly minted Western Australia mines to survive and then expand to meet the massive growth in lithium demand. Chris and I agree a tight lithium chemicals market and price spike are coming based on the lack of investment in new hard rock and brine capacity in recent years. We examine the two main process categories of recycling and how Neometals will again utilize world class partners to move quickly along the development curve. Chris deconstructs the economics of recycling and where battery metals from urban mining will fit on the various cost curves. The episode concludes by looking at Neometals plans for a lithium hydroxide plant in India with a strategic partner and then move to “rapid fire”. Along the way I add to my vocabulary of Aussie sayings with at least three new ones. The first person that can guess them and leaves me a note on globallithium.net/contact gets a Global Lithium hat. Chris and Neometals COO, Mike Tamlin were the guests on episode 3 “Wizards of Oz” which is still second most popular episode of all 77 prior podcasts based on downloads. As always - thanks to our sponsor Zelandez
BMW Group South Africa (BMW SA) will launch South Africa’s fourth electric vehicle (EV) in the fourth quarter of this year, when the Mini SE will make its local debut. The Mini SE follows the new style of EVs, where a known model is turned into an electric car, and the vehicle is not manufactured on a purpose-built EV platform, such as the Nissan Leaf or BMW i3. BMW SA says the Mini SE will be the most affordable battery electric vehicle (BEV) in the local market, with pricing starting at R642000, moving up to R722000 for the top spec model. It looks like a Mini, feels like a Mini, and has retained the classic cool of the British brand, with all the features one would find in the internal combustion engine Mini. Range is 217 km, depending on driving style. Drivers can opt for a Green + mode, where range is preserved, or move up to Sports mode, where the car aims to spend its 270 Nm of torque far more eagerly. BMW SA says it will retain the BMW i3 in the local market, with this model more suited for family mobility. The Mini SE forms part of an extensive rollout of BMW electrified vehicles (EVs), which include plug-in-hybrid vehicles (PEVs), hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles (HCEVs) and BEVs. BMW is targeting an average growth rate of 30% a year in global EV sales, which should lead to one-million EVs on the road by 2021, and 15% to 25% of total sales by 2025. The German car maker says it will have 25 EV models on the road by 2023, with more than half of these BEVs. In Europe, more than half of total sales will be EVs by 2030. BMW PHEVs and BEVs are currently on sale in 74 countries worldwide. The group says it is “on eye-level” with Volkswagen and Tesla in terms of EV sales in the European Union, at around a 10% share. Globally, the group will launch 12 BEVs and 13 PHEVs until 2023. South Africa will not receive all of these, with the most likely next BEV to make its way here the BMW iX3 sports-activity vehicle. The BMW group is already developing the fifth generation of its electric drive train for release in 2021, where the electric motor does not require any rare earths. Taking the technology currently in the BMW i3 as basis, BMW believes it will be able to double the energy density of its battery cells and, therefore, also the operating range of its BEVs. The group has also taken control of its raw material supply, signing a 540-million Euro supply contract with Ganfeng for sustainable lithium from mines in Australia, and a 100-million Euro contract with the Managem Group for cobalt from Morocco.
Alison Dai is the Commercial Director of Chengdu Chemphys, a specialty producer of high purity lithium chemicals. Although less well known than Chinese major producers Ganfeng and Tianqi, Chemphys was active selling high quality lithium chemicals to the difficult to penetrate Japanese and Korean markets long before their larger rivals. Alison was born in China, raised in Western Australia and left an investment banking career with JP Morgan Chase to return to Chengdu and become involved in the family lithium business. We discuss the current state of the lithium market and ponder when the the oversupply situation will turn to shortage. I ask Alison about Chemphys plans for both expansion and utilizing partnerships to grow in the international market. We explore the rise of lithium reprocessors, the challenge of upgrading industrial quality lithium to battery quality and opportunities for Chemphys to help brine producers implement direct lithium extraction. Alison gives her thoughts on the rise of high nickel cathodes and the recent resurgence of LFP cathode. And, of course, we close with rapid fire.
Rodney Hooper and Howard Klein are back after a 3-month hiatus taking stock of the information contained in the Mr. Lithium Market Scoreboard as the tumultuous 1H 2020 punctuated by Covid Q2 disruption is in the books. Tried and true "Don't Fight the Fed" combined with a new pandemic maxim "Buy in May, Stay At Home," combined with Tesla $69.42 S3XY short shorts is leading to cautious optimism/better bid behavior across a number of lithium stocks. While a battle for lithium mindshare has emerged from an upgrading Ganfeng China analyst from underweight to overweight vs. her SQM & ALB love/hating colleagues - recognizing the highly relevant dichotomy between speciality hydroxide for Tier One customers in Japan and Korea trading at 80% premium to China "spot" carbonate. In this episode we discuss the recent announcement by Lithium Americas regarding a transaction with their partner Ganfeng Lithium. The agreement will result in benefits to both parties. Guests Mac Whale of Cormark and LAC CEO Jon Evans will give their perspective on the deal. Note: Mac misspeaks on the project valuation implied by the 1% of the project Ganfeng is purchasing. (1% at $16 million = a valuation of $1.6 billion). I also discuss the recent run-up in Tesla stock and caution lithium investors not to get too excited about the likely short term impact Tesla's performance has had on certain lithium stocks. I wish Luke Kissam, CEO of Albemarle, "Godspeed" in dealing with his recently disclosed health issue. I also briefly discuss the coronavirus and potential impacts it may have on 2020 in the lithium world.
One of my objectives in starting the Global Lithium Podcast was to use it as a tool to learn from the best minds in the industry. After recording over 50 episodes, a great deal of valuable knowledge has been disseminated by my guests. Beginning this week I will, on a bi-weekly basis, repost some of the best episodes and provide commentary on what I feel the major "take aways" are. Although the lithiumpodcast.com website is still available, eventually all the episodes with guests will appear on this platform with updates and additional comments. Although I personally know many of my guests well, I learn something new each time I listen and I believe your experience will be the same. I appreciate that listening to podcasts a second time isn't for everyone which is why "Archive" episodes will be stated upfront. The Ganfeng "Not Lost in Translation" episode is one of the best not so much for the technical information revealed but more it is a "rags to riches" story about how initially one man's vision and later a "dynamic duo" can change an industry by defying conventional wisdom. I learn from Li Liangbin and Wang Xiaoshen each time we meet. It has been a privilege to watch my two friends have great success and to have been in a small way part of that success.
Chris Reed and Neometals monetized a $3M investment in Mt Marion into $200M cash over a 10-year period since bringing Mineral Resources in as Build Own Operater with 30% project interest in 2010. No Stranger, Chris Reed, descendant of mining royalty & man of deep global lithium expertise at the epicenter of the last decades boom busts, shares the great history in partnering to create the worlds second most important hard rock lithium resource - a secure, sustainable supplier to green European sensitivities at VW & BMW, for example, via China Girl Ganfeng - while maintaining strong economics for both miner and processor of this pioneering 50:50 JV. Mineral Resources now has strong JVs in Western Australia with the two most important lithium producers globally - Albemarle and Ganfeng. How might this dynamic evolve over time? Neometals has done well by its shareholders - returning cash via dividends and buybacks, as it has monetized Mt. Marion, while at the same time, maintaining a 20-person staff "project generating" new ventures. With NMT trading at about its cash balance of AUD 108M, Mr. Market seems to assign no value to this team of proven value creators. That could change in 2020/21 as Neometals advances its exceptionally high IRR - 72% - low Capex - USD 66M - recycling project in partnership with Germany industrial giant SMS. With Auto OEMs in particular government mandated to re-cycle their exponentially growing universe of EV batteries, this emerging industry is destined to be a hot development area over the next decade. Neometals is one of the few public plays in the re-cycling space. Chris discusses Neometals revenue potential from recycling services, licensing and sale of recovered cobalt, nickel, lithium, copper, iron, aluminium, manganese into saleable products using its proprietary, sustainable process recovering materials from consumer electronic batteries (lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) cathodes), and nickel‐rich electric vehicle and stationary storage battery chemistries (lithium‐nickel-manganese‐cobalt (NMC) cathodes). Chris also shares some thoughts on the new Lithium Paradigm with volume purchaser Auto OEMs treating lithium as they do all their other "suppliers". www.patreon.com/lithiumionrocks libull.com Not Investment Advice. Gerrit Fuelling, an ex Rockwood/Albemarle chemical engineer who held senior executive roles in sales and operations, joins Lithium-ion Rocks co-hosts Rodney Hooper and Howard Klein for a second time this year for a candid discussion and highly differentiated perspective, in particular re: brine producers and developers in Chile and Argentina. Also included are key highlights and voices from existing ALB management from their December 12 Investor Day in New York. Questions - hydroxide and carbonate spec sheets are tightening from end users, in particular Auto OEMs - will old producers/old plants (eg. SQM) meet the new standards? Or are new producers/plants better placed? - Orocobre and Galaxy have decided to produce a lower quality/intermediate product in Argentina to be processed in lower altitude locations closer to cathode production -- is there an issue with these particular brines/projects (Hombre Meurto/Olaroz) to produce battery quality in Argentina? In general, can "conventional" evaporation (ie, the "Atacama process") work in Argentina or do you need different technology (eg. ion-exchange) that Livent uses to successfully produce battery quality? - Do you believe Greenfield development projects in Argentina can achieve SQM/ALB-like operating costs (ie, below $3,500/t)? How applicable is Ganfeng's prior experience processing purified SQM brine to the development of Cauchari with Lithium Americas? - Rodney wrote recently that breakeven pricing for Chinese non integrated converters using conservative numbers at about $8,400, so at $7K China carbonate spot, these marginal cost producers are well underwater, how much longer can they last? How are Chinese converters surviving? - Can a chemical conversion plant be built in Europe? Is the EU serious enough about battery supply to support mining? Listen carefully to Gerrit's detailed answers to all of the above PLUS Peter Parker Eric Norris's input on the brine vs. Hard Rock debate for an increasingly hydroxide future, ALB's path from 2020 trough to a $800-1B free cash flow machine and a bonus "bad answer" from Luke Kissam in response to Howard's question re: Mineral Resources JV Not Investment Advice. As @RodneyHooper13 and @LithiumIonBull return after a five-week break to begin @LithiumIonRockssecond season, a redux of late 2018 Velocitility has again returned to global and global emerging markets. Despite a strongly upbeat hydroxide demand outlook articulated in Livent’s Q2 conference call and supply restraint at Albemarle, lithium equities have staged only fleeting bear market short squeeze rallies. Political instability in usual (Argentina) and unusual (Hong Kong) places, negative bond yields, Brexit/EU stagnation and Trade War “chicken” with China continue to weigh on short-term sentiment. Gold is hot and goldbugs globally are giddy. Canaccord Genuity’s Reg Spencer and Fastmarkets’ Will Adams discuss with Rodney and Howard their views of the current state of play with lithium supply/demand, prices, the outlook for ASX shares Alita ($A40), Altura ($AJM), Pilbara ($PLS) Orocobre ($ORE) and two of Canaccord’s top junior picks that continue to outperform, Piedmont Lithium ($PLL) and Lithium Power International ($LPI). We also comment on Ganfeng's ($1772) surprise “No” vote from its Hong Kong shareholders and what this could mean to its $450M capital raising plans and its multiple junior miner partners. PLUS! Albemarle looks vulnerable for opportunistic takeover. Valuation (down ~50%) reflects Mr. Market pricing in today’s China spot carbonate price as the long-term reference point, rather than ALB’s more profitable long-term hydroxide price with floors from reliable non-Chinese counter-parties. In Part Two of Lithium-ion Rocks exclusive interview with KISSam Luke - the leader of the world’s largest lithium producer - Howard Klein and Rodney Hooper ask about such M&A possibility and whether management/board are considering insider buying at current prices? Additionally: What LiOH pricing did ALB assume for its Wodgina JV to achieve 2X cost of capital? What is expected timing and pricing for $1B+ bond deal later this year for Wodgina JV? What are ALB's top two most important investment criteria for lithium investment? Might ALB deploy Ganfeng-like strategy in partnering with juniors via off-take agreements? After investing "tens of millions" evaluating King’s Mountain North Carolina what has ALB learned about the quality and size of that past-producing asset and the likelihood/timing that the Carolina Tin-Spodumene belt will again become an important part of USA and global lithium supply? PLUS: Chris Kapsch of Loop Capital Is lithium a specialty chemical or commodity chemical? What does that really mean for $ALB long-term profit margin and Mr. Market earnings/EBITDA multiple? With Tier One harbrock (Talison) and brine (Atacama), ALB is positioned as the "baseload supplier" to "Tier One" Battery and Cathode producers outside China. Does this justify premium valuation to peers? Where does ALB & other lithium producers sit relative to broader “Specialty Chemicals” investment universe? ALB now attracting traditional Value funds, compared to prior interest from Growth and GARP investors - what are their top questions? What are the dynamics in ALB's bromine and catalyst business? Might we see a positive or negative surprise from these Oligopolistic businesses supporting ALB's lithium growth investments? Not Investment Advice. DYOR
Ganfeng Lithium’s US$30M prospective investment and off-take agreement with Bacanora Lithium is a very consequential deal. Providing operational and, by our estimates, up to $150M in equity support, "Off-take Partner of First Resort" Ganfeng is once again taking astute, calculated risk with a large, long-lived clay asset that by any definition should be considered World Class. Bacanora - advised by Citi and Canaccord - and its Sonora Lithium project, with Ganfeng, Hanwa, Red Kite and other large institutional support could be fully funded by end 2019 with targeted fast track Stage One production of 17,500t lithium carbonate by 2021. #LithiumIonRocks co-hosts Howard Klein and Rodney Hooper dive deep with successful project developer and Bacanora CEO Peter Secker who outlines the background, deal details and what to expect over the next few months in what is yet another important strategic relationship for Ganfeng in another new Western Hemisphere emerging market jurisdiction. In this episode, Lithium-ion Rocks! welcomes two esteemed ex-Rockwood Lithium senior executives. We ask Gerrit Fuelling, who oversaw $200M in lithium sales from Asia, whether $40,000 capital intensity per lithium hydroxide paid by Albemarle for JV with Mineral Resource at Wodgina is the new norm? Are Argentina brines really as low cost as advertised? Where might we see lithium chemical prices in 5, 10 years? Gerrit addresses these more and also shares thoughts on Albemarle, Livent, Ganfeng, SQM and Tianqi assets and M&A growth strategies. From KKR portfolio company to 4X+ return over the 2005-2015 10-year period, Rockwood Lithium is the source of Albemarle being one of the best positioned specialty chemical lithium producers on the planet. With continued bold bets on lithium will ALB CEO Luke Kissam pull off from the 2015-2025 10-year period similar returns to his ROC predecessor Seifi Gashemi? Tim McKenna shares tales from 10 years in an important government, investor and public relations role at Rockwood Lithium which included a battle and then partnership with China's Tianqi for the world’s best hard rock lithium mine at Talison/Greenbushes . Tim also share his success with the US Department of Energy during the Obama administration and his views on the current US government perspective about critical battery raw material security of supply.

MERCEDES-BENZ CARS LAYS FOUNDATION FOR A BATTERY FACTORY AT THE UNTERTÜRKHEIM SITE "At the site of the Mercedes-Benz Untertürkheim plant in Germany, the construction of the battery factory at the Brühl sub-plant has begun with the symbolic foundation-laying ceremony. By the end of the decade, Mercedes-Benz Cars will produce high-efficiency traction batteries for future Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles of the EQ product and technology brand on 12,000 m2 in a newly erected and carbon-neutral battery factory at Brühl." says Green Car Congress: "The new battery factory is an important component in the global battery production network within the production network of Mercedes-Benz Cars comprising nine battery factories at seven locations on three continents. Mercedes-Benz Cars is investing more than one billion euros in a global battery production network within the worldwide Mercedes-Benz Cars production network. Local battery production will be a major success factor in the electric initiative of Mercedes-Benz Cars, and the crucial component when it comes to meeting the worldwide demand for electric vehicles flexibly and efficiently, the company said." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/04/20190405-mb.html VW SEALS 10-YEAR LITHIUM DEAL FOR ELECTRIC CARS VW said yesterday it had secured 10 years worth of lithium for electric car batteries from Chinese manufcturer Ganfeng. "The two firms "signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on long-term lithium supplies for battery cells," VW said in a statement, although it did not reveal the financial terms of the deal. "Volkswagen is thus already securing a significant share of its lithium requirement," the Wolfsburg-based group added." says TheLocal.de: "With harsh EU emissions limits set to bite from next year and toughen further by 2030, the sprawling 12-brand company plans some 70 new electric models by 2028. As it emerges from the shadow of its painful "dieselgate" emissions cheating scandal, VW aims to sell around 22 million electric cars over the coming decade to escape fines from Brussels. Judge Alison Nathan also told both sides Friday to send her a letter by April 18 saying whether they have reached a deal. If they don’t, Nathan will decide on the Securities and Exchange Commission’s motion to find Musk in contempt." reports CBS. com said: "The regulator weeks ago asked Nathan to hold Musk in contempt over a February tweet that misstated, and then clarified, a 2019 production forecast for Tesla vehicles. The agency argued that the tweets demonstrated that no one at Tesla was really keeping watch on Musk's communications as was mandated by a 2018 settlement with the agency. Musk's attorneys countered that the standard for what tweets must be reviewed wasn't clear enough to charge Musk with contempt. Jim Cramer said that he considers the hearing a "win" for Tesla, because he believes that the judge "punted." https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2019/04/05/tesla-ceo-elon-musk-sec-told-to-meet-about-tweets/ https://www.thestreet.com/video/cramer-elon-musk-court-date-win-tesla-14918413 TESLA MODEL 3 JUMPS TO #1 IN THE NETHERLANDS, AMONG ALL CARS "The Dutch plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market had another sales surge last month, with 4,721 plug-in registrations, up 252% year over year" according to CleanTechnica: "This good market performance was mainly due to the Tesla Model 3, which had 2,195 deliveries in March, a new record for any Tesla in the Netherlands, also allowing the Tesla sedan to last month’s best seller in the country, all fuel categories included, with an advantage of more than 1,000 units over the #2 Ford Focus (1,187 units)." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/04/05/tesla-model-3-jumps-to-1-in-the-netherlands-among-all-cars-cleantechnica-ev-sales-report/ TOYOTA OFFERS TO SHARE ELECTRIFIED TECH WITH RIVAL FIRMS "Toyota will offer other car firms royalty-free use of nearly 24,000 patents it holds for electrified vehicle technology, in a bid to accelerate the development of such machines." says James Atwood for Autocar: "The royalty-free technology licences relate to systems including electric motors, power control systems and system controls. While the bulk have been developed for Toyota’s hybrid technology, the firm says they can also be applied to plug-in hybrid and fuel cell vehicles. Toyota will also offer fee-based technical support to firms producing electrified vehicles that feature Toyota motors, batteries, power and electric control systems. It says the guidance will allow firms to “achieve high levels of vehicle performance.” https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/toyota-offers-share-electrified-tech-rival-firms TESLA FLEXES ITS SOFTWARE PROWESS IN LATEST OVER-THE-AIR UPDATE "Earlier this week, Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) announced another software update for its vehicles. The update, which brought Tesla vehicles a step closer to autonomous driving, highlighted how rapidly the automaker can deploy a significant new feature -- all through a seamless over-the-air update." reports Daniel Sparks for Motley Fool: "Based on another announcement from Tesla last week, there's apparently much more to come on this front. The company announced it is unveiling its in-house-developed full self-driving (FSD) computer at an event in Palo Alto, California, on April 22. At the event, Tesla executives will discuss the computer and give test-drives to experience features that are "under active development."" https://www.fool.com/investing/2019/04/06/tesla-flexes-its-software-prowess-in-latest-over-t.aspx QUESTION OF THE WEEK RAJEEV NARAYAN With respect to the question of the week; I feel that I my data and location are already tracked in so many ways- my phone, Smart TV, CCTVs, credit card usage, such that the incremental risk of tracking my “smart” cars location/ driving habits is minimal, but the advantages in terms of allowing better software upgrades, etc... is greater than the risks. Also this sort of tracking is already present in many ICE cars now - for example most GM cars here in the U.S. have Onstar which tracks your location if you pay for the service or not. However for the vast majority of us, it’s totally irrelevant. Who doesn’t have a smart phone? That gives away far more information to anyone who can get access to the data than a connected car ever will. (I’m not going to lose sleep over it as I have nothing to hide. In fact it would be pretty boring if it was accessed AND identified by anyone. Most of this sort of data is normally totally de-identified.) David Nye Simon Clark With reference to your question on connected cars and privacy, this matter came up about 12 months or so ago on LinkedIn with specific reference to GDPR. There wasn’t a clear cut answer, but it’s not just connected cars. Most modern cars record telemetry in their engine management system which is then downloaded when the car is serviced. Different cars record different things, but all of that data is ultimately available to the manufacturer. However you don’t need an EV to be connected. A number of cars, including my Peugeot 3008 are ‘online’ either directly or via my mobile phone. JOSHUA PRITT Privacy in connected cars? What about privacy on smartphones? If you have a smartphone already then you're not really giving up any more privacy than you already have. Only now both Google and the car company can track you. It is worth it though since you can track your car if it's stolen and automatically call for help in a crash. In fact I even pay a monthly fee for this to OnStar. Having the cameras inside will help figure out who messed up your car if you ever loan it out. You can always cover it up with tape or something if you're paranoid. Like those that cover their laptop camera with a sticker or tape. I myself am not bothered one bit. I even have an Amazon Echo in almost every room of my house so I can turn lights on and off and set the temperature from wherever I am. ANDREW JACOBS Connectivity to cars is great. There are so many advantages such as being ably to remotely control the car, over the air updates and mobile internet connectivity. However information collected by companies should always be in the control of the customer. They must be able to turn off or on ANY information that is sent, even if it sacrifices the functionality of the car. JOHN FRUHWIRTH The question of privacy versus convenience is old and stale. That train has left the station. That ship has sailed, The jury is in. In general, society only works when there is a certain level of trust. We have already voted in favour of convenience over privacy. Here is my evidence: We routinely hand over our ID for "security" checks. We conduct business with credit cards, Transactions that can be tracked. We allow pre-authorized payments from our bank accounts for our regular bills. We share our intimate lives freely on social media. etc. I could go on, but I think you get the picture. MIA OPPELSTRUP For me, whether my EV is connected or not is not just a tradeoff between my own convenience or privacy, but also the greater good. If sharing my driving data helps make EVs the best self-driving cars, helps make them safer, or helps companies better plan charging networks based on where EV drivers actually travel, I'm all in. However I do believe that each person should have full control of their own data and EV drivers should have the ability to opt out of tracking, should they wish to do so. Thanks kindly for all you do to support EVs. Congrats on being the #1 auto show in the UK! I'll continue to spread the word here in the US. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Saturday 22nd September edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. FCC RELEASES PICTURE OF MODEL 3 KEY FOB From not being in America, all i can say is the FCC seems to be a really good place for leaks. When I used to follow mobile phones much more closely, there always seemed to be stories because the FCC published something. So thank you FCC. Fred at Electrek says; "Some owners have been complaining of occasional issues of using the app, which relies on their phone’s Bluetooth connection. When Tesla applied for a new key fob using a BLE frequency with the FCC, we speculated that Tesla was introducing the device for Model 3. The documents were confidential until today and now we can confirm that the key fob is for Model 3" It's very similar to the Model S and X fobs, so kinda chunky, and with buttons for doors, frunk and trunk. I'm not clear on whether it will ship as standard or be a paid extra, for many owners the mobile method has worked just fine. https://electrek.co/2018/09/20/tesla-model-3-key-fob-images/ LARGE DELIVERY OF MODEL 3’S From InsideEvs.com: "A trusted source that works at Tesla and requested to remain anonymous contacted InsideEVs with some inside information. Makes sense right? Anyhow, they shared that Tesla Service Center techs are being pulled from their usual duties over the next week or so to help with deliveries. Apparently, Tesla has readied some 7,000 Model 3 vehicles to be delivered just in the San Francisco Bay Area over the course of seven days. We hear that the specific goal is for the automaker to deliver 1,000 Model 3s each day for the last week of the month in the Bay Area alone." POLESTAR UNVEILS FIRST PRODUCTION EV WITH AIM TO OVERTAKE TESLA "Polestar debuted its first production EV and previewed its electric car line in New York with the CEO squarely taking aim at Tesla." reports Jake Bright for TechCrunch. The Polestar 1 isn't cheap at $155,000 but you do get both batteries and a fossil for performance. There are three motors powered by twin 34kWh battery packs and that's before you stick gas in. With a range of 100 miles you won’t NEED the fossil unless you want it to gun the car all day. I can't think of a hybrid which has a range of more than 100 miles, that better than most first gen BEVs. “Polestar 2 will be a direct competitor to the Tesla Model 3…” CEO Thomas Ingenlath said on the launch stage. He told TechCrunch the company will focus more on creating converts to EVs than pulling away Tesla’s existing market share. "There are many people out there who still think a car has to have a combustion engine. Polestar 1 is an extremely good vehicle to get people across that line and once they drive it…understand what an amazing experience an electric car is." "While Polestar’s HQ is in Gothenburg, Sweden, it will manufacture cars at a plant in Chengdu China." https://techcrunch.com/2018/09/21/polestar-unveils-first-production-ev-with-aim-to-overtake-tesla/ TESLARATI HAS NEW SEMI VIDEO "The Semi has since been sighted in multiple states across the US, and during the company’s Q2 2018 earnings call, Jerome Guillen, the former head of Tesla’s truck programs who is now serving as the company’s President of Automotive, pointed out that the vehicle had already been improved since it was initially unveiled. The exact nature of these improvements remains to be seen, but if a video of the Semi captured earlier this month is any indication, it appears that the electric long-hauler has gotten even more daunting and impressive when it performs a full-speed acceleration run." [audio] Simon at Teslarati says: "The Semi’s performance, handling, and power were specifically pointed out by professional driver Emile Bouret, a close friend of Tesla chief designer Franz von Holzhausen, in an Instagram post earlier this month." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-semi-trailer-acceleration-spaceship-new-sighting/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtwP-aDUtWk RENAULT UNVEILS SMART ISLAND ON BELLE-ÎLE-EN-MER Renault say they're delighted to unveil a brand new joint project known as FlexMob’île. The aim of this smart electric ecosystem is to facilitate the energy transition on the French island of Belle-Île-en-Mer which lies off the coast of southern Brittany. This initiative follows in the footsteps of the innovative Smart Fossil Free Island programme which has been operational since last February on the Portuguese island of Porto Santo in the Madeira archipelago. For the next 24 months, Groupe Renault and its public and private partners will be developing a smart electric ecosystem that has been conceived to reduce the island’s carbon footprint and increase its energy independence. From 2019, Belle-Île-en-Mer residents and visitors to the island will have access to a fleet of electric cars by means of a self-service hire programme featuring Renault ZOE and Kangoo Z.E. These vehicles will be powered thanks to a network of charging stations located close to the island’s main attractions. This new carsharing service will take advantage of surplus energy produced by solar panels installed on the roofs of the island’s main public buildings. For instance, solar panels on the school’s rooftop provide heat and lighting for classrooms during the week, while the energy produced at weekends or during school holidays will be used to charge the cars. Groupe Renault plans to provide second-life electric car batteries for the island’s largest holiday residences facility. These batteries will be used to store energy produced during the day by solar panels for use in the evening, chiefly to heat the bungalows. This should allow the centre to extend its season which until now has been restricted by central heating costs. http://www.press.renault.co.uk A TRIP TO HOSPITAL IN AN EV? "The EV revolution may be starting to gain ground on the retail market, but emergency service vehicles such as ambulances should switch to electric or hybrid propulsion, according to the UK’s leading public health body." reports AutoExpress.co.uk: "The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has published draft guidance recommending public-sector organisations “should make low vehicle emissions one of the key criteria when making routine procurement decisions. This could include selecting low-emission vehicles, including electric vehicles.” " https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/104719/emergency-vehicles-could-go-electric-and-autonomous TESLA SIGNS THREE YEAR DEAL WITH GANFENG FOR LITHIUM "China’s top producer of lithium, a metal used in electric-vehicle batteries, said it’s agreed a deal with Tesla Inc. to supply a fifth of its production to the vehicle maker, highlighting the push for supply pacts." according to Bloomberg: "Tesla will designate its battery suppliers to buy lithium-hydroxide products from Ganfeng Lithium Co. and its unit, the Jiangxi-based company said in a filing to the Shenzhen exchange on Friday. The agreement runs from 2018 to 2020 and could be extended by three years, Ganfeng said." "Earlier this week, Ganfeng announced an agreement to supply LG Chem between 2019-2025 under a supplementary contract, according to a separate filing. Tesla may need as much as 28,000 tons of lithium hydroxide a year from late next year based on battery output at its Nevada facility reaching the equivalent of 35 gigawatt hours, according to Benchmark Mineral’s forecasts." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-09-21/chinese-lithium-giant-agrees-three-year-pact-to-supply-tesla COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
