After 50 years, it's great to see PENTAGRAM finally getting the attention they deserve from all across the world wide web. LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE, the band's latest offering and their first album in nearly a decade, arrived on the scene mere weeks before a video surfaced that went viral, showing founding member and frontman Bobby Liebling (wide-eyed and seemingly possessed) powering through “The Ghoul” with the rest of the band on stage and instantly becoming a viral sensation across metal circles and the greater metropolitan global meme universe.   LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE truly measures up to the meaning of the phrase, with PENTAGRAM doing the impossible and finally breaking through to a worldwide audience. With their trademark dark, doomy, and heavy sound finally produced in a way that captures the dark essence of classic doom with the amplified power and brutality of more modern doom metal bands, LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE might just be PENTAGRAM's finest hour, resulting in one of the greatest (and most fun) doom metal albums in the entire genre.   Be sure to stop by your local “Snooch & Gooch” and pick up some “rental snooch” and remember that there's a significant difference between “man coon balls” and “Maine Coon paws”. Discover how the transcendental power of hearing Sleep's “Dopesmoker” at a local tavern can manifest the “best Friday ever”, remember that snails are just slugs with a “tow behind camper shell”, prepare to “pet the horn” and get “a little tingly down in the nether regions” and JOIN US for a modern taste of classic doom from Alexandria, Virginia doom metal innovators PENTAGRAM with LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182   Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, or wherever you get your Podcasts. From growing up in a working class family in Philadelphia, PA… to his many decades fronting L.A.'s seminal hardcore punk band FEAR… to the band's legendary performance on Saturday Night Live in 1981 (arranged by the great John Belushi) that resulted in absolute mayhem… to what it was like making the transition to acting in feature films with FLASHDANCE (1983)… to his preferred approach to acting and what he feels makes a character feel real and not just like an actor playing a role… to his experience riding Harley's and shooting Walter Hill's STREETS OF FIRE… to working with director Penelope Spheeris - first as one of the subjects of her 1981 documentary THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION and then as an actor in her 1987 film DUDES… to working with the all-star cast of Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Leslie Ann Warren, and Eileen Brennan in 1985's CLUE… Lee shares his journey living and performing under the lights of both the stage and screen for 50 years (so far)!

Can we give Jennifer Beals forever props for championing the off-the-shoulder look? And we all know about that iconic scene, but why is the rest of this movie so very very wet? We'll give you our answers in the form of this interpretive dance.

Overlapping Dialogue

Was it Mrs. White with a lead pipe in the conservatory? What about Professor Plum with a revolver in the kitchen? Ooh, I know, it was Mrs. Peacock with a rope in the library, right?? In all actuality, it was Jonathan Lynn and (gasp, two killers!!) John Landis with a pair of scissors in the editing room, attempting to splice together a coherent and entertaining yarn out of a popular board game. Listen as we examine the scene of the crime with 1985's Clue, where we breakdown the joys and pitfalls of board game cinema, the cinematic ethics of creating multiple endings, the parameters for what exactly constitutes a cult movie, and the oddly influential footprint this film left on the landscape of popular storytelling. The pop culture coverage in the August 1988 issue is a bit slighter than we're used to, allowing us to get into nearly every bit of it. What Now tells us to get hype for The Fly II, Haunted Summer, and The Prince Of Pennsylvania, also mentioning in passing a comedy called Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, shrug. It also gets into John Stamos's new haircut, a Europe member's birthday, the unreleased Jon Cryer/Penelope Spheeris movie Dudes, the Amnesty International tour, and the dearth of women in heavy metal. Outside pop culture, we learn about "the crack" in the Sassy Glossary, and hunt down photos of the River Phoenix poster that the previous owners of our magazine copies obviously ripped out before selling them to us. To mix it up, the magazine gets a bevy of young stars it's recently interviewed, or about to -- including Alex Winter (twice), Paul Hipp, Alan Boyce, Johnny Depp, Annabeth Gish, and more -- to serve as guest critics in Watch It and Listen Up. And finally, Christina does yeoman's work in her write-around profile of an unavailable Lou Diamond Phillips. We hope YOU are available to listen! Visual Aids

Julie ( with an assist from Eli ) suggested two great movies this time, where the characters take to the roadways in pursuit of love and happiness. Along the way they face darkly weird challenges and tests...do they succeed? We'll never tell, but we WILL tell you that you should track down both of these excellent flicks and put them into your eye holes. We start off with 1991's Highway to Hell, from director Ate de Jong, which stars Chad Lowe and Kristy Swanson, with tons of surprise guests. The film starts with Swanson being kidnapped by the "Hellcop" which forces Lowe to pursue her down the eponymous highway, which is packed with puns, sight gags and references to mythology and literature...it is a totally bizarre but completely entertaining oddity that we all enjoyed.  We follow that up with 1987's Dudes, from director Penelope Spheeris and starring Jon Cryer, Daniel Roebuck and Flea as New York City punks who pack themselves into a dilapidated VW Beetle and head off to California in search of a better life. What they find instead is Lee Ving from Fear who turns EVERYTHING upside down and puts them on a path to revenge. This was another strange one, but a great little time capsule with incredible music and maybe the best character we've ever seen...Daredelvis!Let us know what you thought of the show by writing to flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. Feel a glory in so rolling on the human heart a stone entitled The Czar of Fear* as IDEOTVPod lives out a long-term dream and finally hops on the running board with the Man of Bronze himself, Doc Savage, as he and his Good Friends in Adventure go forth to right the wrongs of ... predatory capitalism. (Seriously.) (Evidently not every win ol' Doc racked up was a win of the perduring variety.) When an industrial town upstate goes on strike to protest slashed wages by factory owners, and strikebreakers are driven mad by unseen means, when the radio programming you know, love, and depend upon, is broken in on by malevolent bells, when your city is overrun by masked men doling out intimidation and murder to the tolling of those bells, only one man, with five helpers, can save the day, widely escaping significant peril and narrowly escaping marriage, and that man, of course, was the dry run for The Rock (although he is described as looking more like John Cena, come to think of it), and that man is Doc Savage. Millionaire, surgeon, inventor, firecracker enthusiast, and not exactly a philanthropist, but somebody willing to make you a payday loan at a reasonable rate, Doc is a dude with a lot going on, and also this book has a lot going on. As Clsn stumbles through a story he can't really reconstruct, and as our own "Doc" Friedman lays out the principles undergirding that story, it may seem like "a lot" has become "jeez, too much", but if you're ready to soak in a tale where "'Judborn Tugg!' donged the Green Bell." isn't even one of the top ten sentences, then perhaps you're ready to infiltrate the Green Bells and confront the Green Bell, a sinister force who never needs to be asked to clap. SPECIAL THANKS to Richard Fakelastname, who sent us a squall of these for our, and, we hope, your pleasure! *No, it's not about Lee Ving.
