Google adds Reddit to product searches and spammers follow:  We discuss a new study by Glenn Alsop that examines the prevalence of discussion and forum search features This module is a tacit admission on Google's part that its algorithm can no longer actually surface good organic content. LikeThe study, which analyzed 10,000 product review search queries, revealed significant insights into user behavior and Google's response to search result satisfaction.According to the findings, the discussions and forums Search Engine Results Page (SERP) feature appears in 77% of the analyzed queries, with Reddit emerging as the dominant platform in this category. Alsop's research indicated that Reddit was present 98% of the time when the discussions and forums feature appeared, often occupying two out of the three results showcased.  Google announces review removals with PR puffery:  Google, according to their release, removed 170 million fake reviews last year. They blocked 14 million policy violating videos and 2 million attempts by bad actors to claim GBPs. And they blocked 12 million fake GBPs. These numbers sound like big numbers. But then if you actually think about the fact that there are over 230 million businesses in the world in Google's index it comes out to less than 1 review per business. The same analysis can be applied to the takedowns as well. Despite the bluster the problem is getting no better and in some area like LSA's its getting worse.  Google Maps AI (SGE) a hot mess:  Google has rolled out a Google Maps AI experiment to a limited number of Local Guides. While holding the promise of delivering long tail results and providing meaningful improvements to Maps, the product is slow and non-rsponsive. Today we're heading over to Borneo to join Nikki as she travels the world during the low seasons. Orangutans are one of the three species of great ape and - along with gorillas and chimpanzees - our closest cousins.  Their plight is such that the Orangutan Foundation International estimates that at current rates they will be extinct in 50 years; pressures from illegal logging and the palm oil industry being their greatest threats. Despite that, one place where you are almost guaranteed to see them in the wild is Indonesian Borneo - also known as Kalimantan. As ever, tourism provides a vital role in saving these remarkable creatures by both protecting their environment and providing alternative sources of income for local people. Former BBC journalist, Nikki Morrison, has been travelling the world during the low seasons for us and a highlight of her trip so far has been a four day river cruise with the eco-tourism organisation, Local Guides: It does what it says on the tin, cutting out the middle man and putting you the traveller in direct contact with a community of local experts who promote responsible travel in off-the-beaten-path destinations throughout Indonesia. Guides like Teguh Prakoso, who Nikki spoke to as their journey drew to a close on what also transpired to be his 27th birthday! And you can learn more about Local Guides by visiting www.local-guides.org/ and you can also find out what they're up to over on Instagram at instagram.com/localguidesadventures/ Nikki tells us that the High Season is June July August and September, so the low season is effectively the rest of the year from October through to May. At peak times before the pandemic there could be as many as 100 people at a feeding station to see the orangutans. The number of klotok (boats) working the river has halved since the pandemic from 100 to 50 so again there's urgent need to support Borneo tourism regardless of season. But That's our show for this week. Thanks as always, for your company, and if you enjoyed this podcast, please do leave us a positive rating and review on your podcast app and also don't forget to follow us on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn to be the first to hear our latest low season stories, articles and guides. Have a great week wherever you are and remember that travel is always better and fairer for the planet, the local communities and you the travellers, when it's without the crowds…

“The plain fact is that a picture, to represent an object, must be a symbol for it, stand for it, refer to it; and that no degree of resemblance is sufficient to establish the requisite relationship of reference. Nor is resemblance necessary for reference; almost anything may stand for anything else….The eye comes always ancient to its work, obsessed by its own past and by old and new insinuations of the ear, nose, tongue, fingers, heart and brain. It functions not as an instrument self-powered and alone, but as a dutiful member of a complex and capricious organism. Not only how but what it sees is regulated by need and prejudice. It selects, rejects, discriminates, associates, classifies, analyzes, constructs. It does not so much mirror as take or make; and what it takes and makes it sees not bare, as items without attributes, but as things, as food, as people, as enemies, as stars, as weapons. Nothing is seen nakedly or naked.” -Nelson Goodman “…the Abelam do not ask what a painting means. The design elements all have names and they are assembled into harmonious compositions, which appear to act directly on the beholder without having to be named. Abelam art is about relationships, not about things. One of its functions is to relate and unite disparate things in terms of their place in the ritual and cosmological order. It does this, I would suggest, directly and not as an illustration to some text based in another symbolic system such as language. One of the main functions of the initiation system with its repetetive exposure of initiates to quantities of art is, I would suggest, to teach the young men to see the art, not so that he may consciously interpret it but so that he is directly affected by it.” -Anthony Forge

Google Business Profile services positively impact rank:In a recent test by Joy Hawkins at Sterlingsky demonstrated that having services identified for your profile influences rank. How does Google generate these categories? How does this fit into the long term trend of Google adding ever more granular detail for businesses?  Will custom services have an equal effect? Will this appear world wide? Businesses need to make sure that Google has applied the correct categories. Which geo title tags have the most impact on local search rank? A title tag needs to be as long as it needs to be but longer title tags don't perform as well. Which location terms should you use? Near me in a title tag only drives a small increase in rankings.  The biggest driver (2.5x improvement) is the use of the city name in the title name.  Impact of Google easing review filter to placate Local Guides:Earlier this month, Google noted that there had been a lot of Local Guide complaints about review filtering, that Google had been removing too many Local Guide reviews and they were going to update the filter to let more reviews show and go back and release any that they erroneously filtered. Hypothetically doing this would decrease complaints in the GBP forums about missing reviews AND increase complaints about fake review attacks.  Our research confirms that is the caseThe Near Memo is a weekly conversation about Search, Social, and Commerce: What happened, why it matters, and the implications for local businesses and national brands.near memo ep 102Subscribe to our 3x per week newsletter at https://www.nearmedia.co/subscribe/
