Welcome to 2022! This week Dr Russell Thackeray muses on the recent arrival of 2022 and suggests some ideas to make the most of the year. He focuses some thoughts on the nature of resolutions as opposed to goals and challenges us to think more creatively about where and why we are aiming as people often understate their long term ambitions. There will also some thoughts around choices and the nature of willpower, whether it depletes along the lines of decision fatigue, or whether it's more of a belief system. Hopefully there will be a few ideas or nuggets that you may find useful. As we enter our next phase of podcasts, we would like to wish you all a tremendous and fulfilling New Year!!
Another chance to listen to last year's Christmas podcast from Dr. Russell Thackeray. Finally, he discusses how the narrative we use can help our mental state and how confirmation bias can help give us the things we believe in. The only other thing to say is that we hope you have a happy and safe Christmas and we look forward to catching up with you again in 2022!
Pat Helmers the Sales Podcaster turned Cannabis Advocate Cannabis Advocate Pat Helmers joins us on The Next 100 Days Podcast. He discusses a recent career change. It's all happened in the last 100 days. Pat has become a Cannabis Advocate. His new podcast offers him cannabis industry networking opportunities. The cannabis market size is roughly $13 billion now. It's forecast to grow to $70 billion in 7 years! So you can see, it's a sound strategy for him to become a vocal advocate for the cannabis industry. In March, Pat's Sales Babble Podcast is 8 Years Old! Imagine that, podcasting once a week for 8 years! Now that is consistency! Listen here: https://www.salesbabble.com Being a Cannabis Advocate http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Pat-Helmers-Cannabis-Advocate.mp4 Pat plans to use his Cannabis Advocate Podcast as a way to network. He wants to be a match-maker. Moreover, he wants to be an advocate for the Cannabis industry. In the United States, cannabis is legal in some States, but not at the Federal level. However, as there are problems with products crossing state borders. More than that, there are problems with banking too. Pat says that over time he wants to connect with people. You can do that with a podcast. Is Cannabis a Gateway to Other Drugs? However, Pat says it isn't. On the other hand, you might want to look at this NIH Research Report. Meantime, it does seem to have an interesting history. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Pat-Helmers-Gateway-Drug.mp4 Pat Helmers provides a Testimonial for The Next 100 Days Podcast Including an outtake too! http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Pat-Helmers-Testimonial.mp4 Pat is vehement about Cannabis not being a gateway drug. He cited the 1980s and Nancy Reagan pushing the 'gateway' drug agenda. The process States take, like California, is decriminalisation, then medical use, then adult use. But, it's a slow process. Pat's wife's story http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Pat-Helmers-Wifes-Story.mp4 The pharmaceutical industry does not want cannabis legalisation. Pat reckons the hero stories will start to gain acceptance. Pat is a stoic. He doesn't work in a world of fear. Instead, he wants to exude courage, wisdom and kindness. Kevin mentioned Russell Thackeray and CBD - a previous podcast. His point is it'll take time through regulation cycles to make cannabis legal. Pat sees opportunity in the problems besetting the industry. How Will Pat Monetise the Podcast? http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Pat-Helmers-Monetising-His-New-Podcast.mp4 It is a growing market. 5x in the next 7 years. A Review of the Last 6 Years with Kevin Appleby & Graham Arrowsmith After 6 years of podcasting, Graham and Kevin decided to review what they'd achieved in this milestone 300th episode. Prior to the podcast in our way, we agreed to discuss 3 things that have been good for us and 3 things that have not been so good during that time. And not just for the podcast, but for our businesses too. Kevin pays homage to Internet Business Mastery Without both Kevin and I listening to the Internet Business Mastery podcast, we would not have even met, let alone start a podcast. The presenters of this popular show, have both been guests on The Next 100 Days. Here are the links to their shows with us. Jeremy Frandsen - #100 Lifestyle Design Jason Van Orden - #223 Thought Leadership Kevin Blames Internet Business Mastery for Making it Sound Too Easy! Kevin was in determined mood. On his list of didn't go so well, they were at the top of his negative list too! http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Kevin-Internet-Business-Mastery-Podcast.mp4 Kevin relented! Jeremy and Jason brought us together. Kevin also got to know another previous two-time guest - Russell Thackeray too. Additionally, for Kevin, he is also forging a business relationship with Dan Wells in their Grow CFO business. Strengths of The Next 100 Days Podcast Another review point Kevin makes is that our consistency in producing episodes helps us attract guests. Many of our guests introduce themselves to us through the APPLICATION form on this website! Graham pointed out that many of our guests are ex-corporate, probably running their own businesses and like to have fun. They don't take themselves too seriously! http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Strengths-of-The-Next-100-Days-Podcast.mp4 But is The Next 100 Days Podcast TOO GENERAL? Kevin pointed out that we have been a generalist podcast. In this way, has it been both success and failure. Success in that we have brought so many very interesting guests, covering a wide arc of topics. But could we have done better, by being highly focused on one or two markets? We are not niche. If we provide a service for everyone, you are providing a show for no-one. Kevin made the point that his Grow CFO shows grown quickly because it is focused on a small audience. It is relevant to them. Graham made the point that in the next 100 days, in a business context, topics could be virtually anything. It's Difficult to Scale a Podcast http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Kevin-Diffcult-to-Scale-a-Podcast.mp4 The lesson to be learned is be clear about WHY you want to do it and to WHOM will you provide the service to. Accurate Thinking Graham made the case that when the podcast was being first thought of, both Kevin and Graham were probably not displaying Accurate Thinking. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Graham-Accurate-Thinking.mp4 In Renegade Millionaire, Dan Kennedy uses accurate as in "knowing facts you may not want to know". For Graham, delegation has been a negative. Recently, we used a photo without permission and that cost Kevin and Graham. Graham cited a legal agreement that he probably ought not to have entered, and with better accurate thinking he would have avoided. So, with both staffing issues and contracts, accurate thinking - delving into the facts you mat not want to know, a better outcome would have been possible. Fail Fast, Fail Forward Kevin mentions how he has achieved results through people. Especially with his involvement with GrowCFO. Dan Wells and Kevin brought complementary skills. Then they needed mentoring. After that they transformed their website with a person focused on their website. Graham notes he needs to refresh his website, so he wants to get his website updated. Kevin said Finely Fettled's website is purely being used as a lead generation tool. It is.

Surviving lockdown was an issue raised in the last GrowCFO Situation Room networking group. I asked resilience specialist Russell Thackeray for some advice. Our finance leader community is affected by lockdown in a number of ways. Some are working solo, home alone. Others are struggling to do a high-pressure role alongside home schooling and childcare. Yet others might be finding themselves in between jobs. It's lockdown number 3, its starting to feel like Groundhog Day, and the weather isn't great anymore. So, how do we all keep sane? Surviving lockdown is the wrong mindset Many people are currently extremely worried about this lockdown and part of the problem is the way that we frame it. We often think about surviving lockdown, rather than accepting it and then working out how best to deal with it. People spend a lot of time reading negative headlines in the press, which can easily make you feel depressed. However, the chances are that many positive things have also happened to you during the past year. For example, new hobbies, personal achievements, business successes, family additions, discovering more things to do locally, meeting more of your community and spending valuable time with your household members. It is important to build the right mindset and select which facts you would like to focus on when determining how you really feel. Personal resilience helps surviving lockdown Building personal resilience is essential towards surviving lockdown. Everybody has their own unique combination of circumstances. Your circumstances can have a huge impact on how this lockdown is affecting you. The chances are that you cannot do many of the things that you previously enjoyed doing. Spending time with family and friends; going to work; travelling; visiting bars or restaurants; and playing sport. Plus, many people probably haven't had much time off work recently. Regardless of how you feel, you need to find a sense of perspective and determine what best options are available to you. Otherwise, you can easily fall into the trap of blurring the lines between personal life and work. This will inevitably lead to you working harder at the expense of your wellbeing. Statistics show that employed people are currently working incredibly hard and that most people are being incredibly productive. However, this is unsustainable and carries a range of risks including developing stress and potential burnout. You could also be missing an opportunity to maintain some form of personal life. Maybe there's an opportunity to develop new hobbies that you may benefit from How long is your working day? Many people now have a potential working day from the moment that you wake up until the moment that you fall asleep. Other than attending various Zoom sessions, much of your work can be done at any time. You can balance it around your personal requirements, household and family commitments. However, given the blurred lines between each of these activities, many people find themselves constantly juggling work, homeschooling, childcare, household requirements and personal activities all into one go. This can result in doing 14 things badly, rather than delivering each of these effectively in turn. Neurotherapy shows that the way we think, feel and act is reflected in our physiological functioning. Particularly in the brain and nervous system. Problems like depression and anxiety form when your brain gets stuck in maladaptive states and patterns, due to the hormonal feeding of cortisol into our system. Surviving lockdown is all about managing cortisol Just small amounts of anxiety will create a cortisol load rocking through their body, affecting your heart, lungs, digestive system, glucose immunology and brain function. Too much of your physiology is being poisoned by cortisol, which loves glucose and drains energy. You need to control your situation to prevent cortisol from being stimu...

He has worked with a diverse range of organisations including Central and Local Government, the National Health Service, Mercedes Benz, GKN, The Guardian, Hyundai, QinetiQ and Asda as well as for Private Equity and Venture Capitalists. As an entrepreneur, he has grown a number of organisations and has worked in the investment space with a number of UK Private Equity companies, including some major UK universities, to help them build the best people to ‘ramp up' their investments. He is also a non-executive director of a number of digital businesses including lifestyle transformation and cruise travel companies. Is it difficult to stay resilient in your first CFO role? Russell believes there are many challenges faced by the first time CFO that will call upon the new CFO's resilience. As a new CFO you have been working hard to land your first chance to do the top job. You have aspired to the role for a long time, but its a massive step up. The fight to win the job was tough, but it's only the start. Now the really hard work starts, so yes its going to take all the resilience you have in order to survive and then thrive. Russell identifies two possible scenarios Scenario 1: You rise to the new challenge, and perform well. but find it really stretches you and overwhelm comes from the volume and variety of work you need to undertake and the need to operate at a whole new level Scenario 2: You perform poorly, you struggle with the huge range of new skills needed to do the top job. You were comfortable as head of the finance function, but the new role is a million miles from your comfort zone. You struggle to deal with your new senior colleagues, and overwhelm gets the better of you. How do you stay resilient in Scenario 1? A major issue in scenario 1 is that your personal time gets squeezed. You have little time to do personal development and your own training goes out the window. Your wellbeing is at risk from the overwhelm of your new responsibilities. To stay resilient you must: Learn to leave behind the job you did before, you can't afford to hang on to the safety security & comfort of the finance functionIf your new job is in the same company then make sure you have replaced yourself with a great number 2If your new job is in a different company then make sure the team around you is strong and capable to support youYou can't be the outward face of the company while still looking inward, so you must be ruthless and jettison what you brought with you.Avoid the familiar, throw yourself into the stuff you aren't good at. You will become good at it in time. You need a good mentor. We discussed mentoring in episode 5 of the GrowCFO Show Don't be afraid to ask for help. Asking for help isn't a sign of weaknessFind the natural rhythm of your job. The regular requirements of the job won't be apparent at first, you need time to settle in.Let your team do the technical stuff, you don't need to be the expert in everything How do you stay resilient in Scenario 2? The issue is you have bitten off way more than you can chew. You are drowning. You don't have all the skills to do the CFO role. Maybe you have been over promoted and shouldn't be doing the job. There's actually no harm in admitting this if it is the case. Not admitting it can be more dangerous,

Bricks and Mortar with Russell Thackeray Today we have a returning guest, Russell Thackeray. He's talking about his new venture into retail with a bricks and mortar business. He has found out that starting up again from scratch isn't quite as easy as he first imagined. Listen in and learn all about the pitfalls that Russell has encountered in his first 100 days. QEDOD.com? Four or five years ago, Russell divested his large training business 'to go solo' as they say. He'd worked in the consulting and training industry for many years, and decided to focus on two areas. These were the analytics and evaluation of OD departments and resilience. (OD means organisational development!) However, Russell spent all his time on resilience really. For example, he was building products, training programmes and skillsets based on this. As a result, QEDOD was born. Russell and a bunch of consultants follow the traditional model of money for hours, alongside some online training and revenue streams. What's interesting us that Russell is branching out into bricks and mortar. Bricks and mortar Russell is a great believe of practicing what you preach. It was when Russell was in a cafe that he saw a beauty bar up for sale, and wondered how much it was to buy (or rent) that space. Why? Because there are two things he knew about retail that works - experiences and niche. This space seemed perfect to create a heart for his new business and create a gathering point for training, consultancy and the other therapeutic practices Russell organises within his business. The soft launch is two days from the date this podcast was recorded! Russell's business has become a bricks and mortar business! The next 100 days... Interestingly, Russell doesn't plan 100 days out. Russell starts from the perspective of being interested, innovative and enthusiastic about something. What Russell wanted to do is create a training space and a therapy space, because he is good at those things. On the other hand, there was a real need to provide a retail element for the lease. This is something Russel hasn't done for a number of years. Russell's plan was to provide something high value, experiential and niche. So, he decided to retail CBD (Cannabidiol Oils), because linking this with a therapeutic practice helps its reputation, particularly in the UK. Additionally, it gives a unique aspect because CBD is often bought online or in shops that offer a questionable quality. Combining CBD with Russell's therapy practice allows him to, for example, run a sleep clinic. He can discuss the quality, the physiology, the psychology and the routines of sleep, AND use CBD as part of a therapeutic approach. The logic of this was incredibly appealing. Russell's business model is: Hiring the therapy room out to therapists Running therapy and training to courses and groups their selves The retail http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Pivoting-in-retail.mp4 Who will be your clients? There are two sets of clients. First of all, there's quite a lot of footfall. This is because the mariner in which Russell's centre is based is a huge, experiential endpoint. The second group of people are people who have a need for the sorts of therapies Russel's team put together. For example, people who have PTSD, who have stress or anxiety, people who want to live a better life, to make presentation skills better, a need for counselling. As result, Russel is witching from international work to being local - being part of a community. He will be getting to know the great movers and shakers and makers of his local market. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Centre-not-shop.mp4 What's the primary draw into the wellness centre? This is a bit of a glib answer, but wellness. Because wellness is this idea of living a healthier and more productive life. It means living longer in a more productive way.

Russell Thackeray from QEDOD talks to Graham and Kevin about personal resilience About Russell Thackeray Russell Thackeray hails from Newcastle but now lives in the south of England. Another exiled Geordie! He is a remarkable chap, a serial entrepreneur. Russell Thackeray is an expert in personal resilience and applying the principles of resilience to the entrepreneur. He built a large training consultancy which he divested in 2016. Now, Russell applies psychology to business. We want to know how we, our customers and our staff tick. Resilience takes psychology and makes it practical in a business setting. He has turned resilience into a set of tools for businesses. Russell started life in an orchestra, playing Les Miserables, week in, week out. He got involved in the business side and eventually got interested in ‘emotional intelligence'. Understanding yourself and emotions. What is Personal Resilience? Resilience is about your mental toughness. Your ability to think and get the results you need. This helps you to look after yourself, have great relationships and allows you to cope with whatever life throws at you. Resilience is building the capacity to avoid failure. No such thing as failure only feedback. Failure is just another step on the journey. The best entrepreneurs have failure in their past. How do you use the way you think to make yourself successful. How can you turn life events to make yourself successful and make the most of your talents and potential, relative to what you want to do in your life. Russell is a qualified business psychologist and has 3 Masters qualifications and holds a doctorate in the subject too. Academia challenges evidence. He has found it a joy to find evidence of resilience. It's not pop-psychology. Russell provides an example – goal setting. It is suggested if you write down your goals you are more likely to achieve them. He says, there is NO evidence of any study which proven this. Non-academics make spurious claims. Research says… be careful when you hear this. Listen out for the actual source for the research. Personal resilience is linked to stress. Some stress is good, but if it comes problematical and we cannot process things fast enough, resilience is a toolkit to help get control of ourselves. When things start getting tough. The ROPES Model for Personal Resilience Russell Thackeray uses the ROPES model to provide business owners and entrepreneurs with a framework for increasing personal resilience. R is for Regulation Self-awareness, the ability to KNOW YOURSELF. Choose how you feel. If you cannot choose how you feel you rarely feel how you want to. O is for Optimism and link it to confidence. A confident person is a good person around you. You get attracted by confidence. Showmanship is often the opposite of confidence. Such people have the fear of being found out. Gurus talk of imposter syndrome – from lack of confidence/self-esteem. That comes from not knowing yourself. P is for Purpose – why am I doing what I am doing. Often talk about goal setting – Russell goes against SMART objectives – he uses them in a different way. Russell suggests SMART work if they linked to something grander. Dreams and goals. DUMB objectives – dream, you, methods, behaviours. Thinking about change, its about learning new habits. In the next 100 days what is the new habit you are going to bring about? Write down the design of life you want to have. Russell found he had got what he wanted, but wasn't doing the thing he wanted to do to get to where he wanted to get to. Future focus. Where do you want to be. Write in the present tense in the future. Confirmation bias, the brain serves up the things you are interested in to get to the place you want. The brain notices the things you want to achieve. E is for Energy – optimise your brain To optimise you need good sleep; good nutrition; and good exercise. How do we oxygenise our brain so it can manage and...
