“You live a new life for every language you speak. If you know only one language, you live only once.” ―Czech proverb Did you know that 92% of students in Europe learn another language in school, and nearly a quarter of Canadians can hold a conversation in both English and French. Roughly one out of every two people on the planet knows at least two languages, and three out of four humans don't speak English. (source: ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) That may sound hyperbolic or pie-in-the-sky, but take a moment and consider what a democracy rests upon: civility, acceptance of differences, even if the majority rules, minority's rights are protected, along with a educated populous in vast fields of knowledge. These benefits, as we will talk about in more detail at the end of today's post, not only benefit the individual in the career and life pursuits, they also benefit the social and economic security of a democracy. "Growth in the number of people speaking languages in addition to English creates new opportunities for greater cross-cultural understanding, and integrates different ideas and perspectives in ways that will improve democratic discourse." —The Century Foundation As we get older, the argument is that it becomes more difficult to acquire a new language, and while that can be true, it depends more heavily upon the individual, their cognitive strength, the type of language they are learning (what Group level is it), as well as their awareness about what it takes to learn a new language. Yes, there will be challenges. Yes, you will be required to set aside your ego, and yes, it will take dedicated and consistent effort for at least 500 hours of learning to gain basic proficiency in a Grade I language (French and Spanish are included in this category). But the temporary stress is worth it for all that is gained. “A man who is ignorant of foreign languages is also ignorant of his own language.” ― Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Let's take a look four truths that are revealed about someone who chooses to learn a new language. Each worthwhile attributes that not coincidentally play fundamental roles in living a life of contentment. If you're staying in a place like Osaka or Okayama (or even the Hiroshima area itself) this is a day trip you must take! We started out by meeting our guide, Joe with Travel Japan Together, and taking the ferry over to explore Miyajima Island. We loved exploring the island, boating under the floating torii gate, and visiting some temples. Then, we went back to Hiroshima to visit the Peace Memorial Park and Peace Memorial Museum. It was a heavy afternoon learning about the events of August 6, 1945, days after its 80th anniversary. It's tough to learn about tragic history and dark history including the aftermath of such devastation. We learned a lot this day, and while heavy, it was well worth it. Because if we never learn about our past, we're doomed to repeat our mistakes.   Relevant Links (may contain affiliate links, meaning if you make a purchase through these links, we earn a small commission-at no additional cost to you!): -Travel Japan Together Tour: https://yatra.thick.jp/hiroshima-miyajima-private-custom-tour-with-local-guide/ (our guide was Joe)!   Traveling to France? Want Portuguese you can actually use the moment you land? We invited our friend David to walk us through a traveler's toolkit that works in both Brazil and Portugal, focusing on sounds, phrases, and tiny tweaks that turn confusion into connection. From the musical softness of Brazilian Portuguese to the crisp edges you'll hear in Lisbon, we break down what changes, what stays the same, and how to be understood anywhere you roam.We start with high‑impact essentials: bom dia vs boa noite, when tchau fits, and why “obrigado/obrigada” depends on who's speaking. David demystifies the nasal vowels that give Portuguese its character—think sim that feels like “seen,” and não with a gentle hum you feel more than hear. You'll learn how to get attention with com licença, own a slip with desculpe, and navigate everyday moments with clarity: “Fala inglês?” “Falo.” If the reply races by, “mais uma vez?” slows the world down without killing the vibe. Then we get practical with maps and menus. Use onde fica to find the places travelers need most: o banheiro, a estação, o ponto de ônibus, o hotel, a farmácia. Order like a local by naming the item plus por favor—água, café com leite, chá—no stress, no essays. Introductions are simple and warm: “Meu nome é…” followed by “muito prazer” builds instant rapport. We also cover numbers with a twist—um/uma and dois/duas reflect gendered nouns—so you can ask for duas águas and then request a conta with confidence. This is language stripped to what works: sound patterns you can mimic, phrases built for real life, and a traveler's mindset that favors clarity over perfection. If Portugal's tiles or Brazil's beaches are calling, this guide gets you from shy nods to small wins fast. Hit play, learn a handful, and see how far “tudo bem?” can take you. Enjoyed the episode? Clay and his friend Russ Eagle discuss John Steinbeck's 1960 Travels with Charley tour of America from within Steinbeck's truck camper Rocinante. Thanks to the great generosity of the folks at the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas, Clay and his Steinbeckian friend Russ were permitted to do the podcast at the dinette table of the pickup camper. They told the story of how Steinbeck purchased the camper—then a novelty—, how he used it as a metaphor for his travels in search of America, what happened to it after his transcontinental journey, and how it eventually found its way to the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas, California, where John Steinbeck grew up. Clay and Russ were able to report their discovery in the Center's archives of a document that shows just when Steinbeck returned home after his three month trek—thus solving one of the questions historians have had about the whimsical journey with his French poodle Charley. This episode was recorded live on September 27, 2025.
