Andy Frasco and Nick Gerlach launch a new series, Respect Your Elders, with two unforgettable conversations from Kavod Senior Life in Denver. Vivian, an 84-year-old retired nurse and writer, reflects on surviving a life-threatening illness, reporting on Hurricane Katrina, and why compassion still matters. Michael, a former athlete, award-winning cannabis baker, cookbook author, and entrepreneur, shares stories about success, regret, reinvention, and the lessons he's learned over nearly seven decades. Two lives. Decades of experience. Plenty of laughs. And a reminder that some of the best stories come from people who have already lived several chapters.

“Send Coach John a message”I always love seeing some of the same strong people, who continue to post things on a regular basis that help others. A former student of mine who is now a fabulous teacher and coach, Coach Ray Ostrowski (@CoachRayO3313) is definitely one of those people that are a quality difference maker for others. Here is his intro for the post I saw today: “Your % matters. You can't be a part-timer & expected to receive full-time benefits & rewards. Break ‘what you do' up into a % based on your number of opportunities & see how you stack up. Are your outcomes in line with your expectations? Does your % help or hurt your effort?” Now remember, he writes these quotes out every day on a big white board in marker, for his students / players to see! He's sharing these gems for anyone that wants to keep getting better - even if we are not in high school any more or that we don't play football either. That's the beauty of being a lifetime learner… it happens every day if you go looking for it. The quote that he wrote out is this: “% Matters! You can't be a part-timer & expect full time benefits & rewards. In sports, percentages matter - 75% from the line is solid, while .350 from the plate is elite. But in life, what % of the work are you actually doing? If you're only showing up for half the reps, half the prep & half the effort - don't expect the whole result. There isn't much middle ground for commitment & excuse. The scoreboard will reflect your investment.” WOW!! Take that to heart my friends. This got me thinking about my % as connected to my everyday life. What's my “batting average” for each day? Am I even getting to the plate to take an at bat or am I content sitting in the bleachers and “resting” because it's more comfortable and I “get to” or “I've earned it” since I'm retired. Dang Coach Ray…. you got this guy doing some deep thinking with this one my friend. Thank You! (I hope he's got you thinking too my friends.) Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I found a new connection for this episode, and even if it's coming out a tad late, I still had to share it with you. It's from Bob Coniglio (@BobConiglio) and his message that goes with the quote is to “Enjoy the day.” The thought he shared was this: “Connection is why we're here. It is what gives purpose and meaning to our lives.” ~ Brene Brown. Life is indeed all about connections. It's about the people we build relationships with throughout life. It's the sparks that we connect with that fuel our passion and our purpose. Here is the link for the speech (ordinary people do extraordinary things) from Coach Jim Valvano - HERE. It's also the daily living we choose to go after that connects with both - people and our purpose. Keep investing in those choices every day my friends. As long as I live, I want to keep making these connections every day I have. How about you? Thanks for listening. What if aging was not about slowing down, but about discovering new strength, new community, and new reasons to keep playing? In this episode, we talk with Kyle Case, CEO of the Huntsman World Senior Games, the largest annual multi-sport event in the world for athletes age 50 and older. Kyle shares how he first fell in love with the idea of amateur sports and event management as a college student, and how that passion grew into a career devoted to active aging, meaningful competition, and creating opportunities for people to keep doing what they love well into later life. Under his leadership, the Huntsman World Senior Games now welcomes more than 12,000 athletes to St. George, Utah each year to compete in over 40 sports, including pickleball. Kyle talks about why pickleball has been such a powerful part of that growth, from its low barrier to entry to its ability to welcome players across generations and skill levels. He reflects on the inspiring athletes he has watched over the years, including competitors in their 80s, 90s, and even over 100 years old, and shares why the Games are about so much more than medals. They are about purpose, connection, joy, and proving that it is never too late to begin something new. Along the way, he also shares his own experience competing in the senior games and the life lessons he has learned from decades of watching people redefine what aging can look like. This is an inspiring conversation about pickleball, the Huntsman World Senior Games, active aging, senior athletes, longevity, community, resilience, fitness, purpose, lifelong sports, and the life lessons that remind us not to stop, not to count ourselves out, and never to believe it is too late to start. https://seniorgames.net/

“Send Coach John a message”I came across not only a post from Jon Gordon (@JonGordon11) but I also just picked up a copy of his latest book “The Power of Positive Habits”. Great stuff in my quest to just keep trying to get better and be my best version of myself. What a huge reminder for us to keep looking to be humble throughout life! Keep looking to have the mindset of a warrior - keep going, not giving up, get back up when getting knocked down, etc. Keep feeding that spark inside of us that helps to make us who we are. Send us Fan MailFeeling weighed down? It might not just be what's happening around you, it could be what's happening within you. In this episode, Spencer explores the internal beliefs, thoughts, and expectations that drain our energy and keep us from showing up as our best selves. A powerful reminder to check in, let go of what no longer serves you, and create space for the person you're becoming.
It is no fun being stuck. Retirement can have this effect on us. We can feel strapped to our past or our present. We can't seem to conceive of a reason to do anything.

“Send Coach John a message”Found a great conversation that Greg Berge (@GregBerge) shared with a recent post. This thought was what the focus was on: “The lie we tell ourselves. Once we win one I'll be happy.” - Sean McVay LA Rams Head Coach on Winning a Super Bowl. Greg goes on to say “that Winning doesn't fill the void. It just moves the finish line. The real joy? The grind. The growth. The people.” Like I've shared plenty of times before, life is about relationships. I love the last last that Coach McVay shares about transactional vs. transnational. Take some of these points - like I need to do - and enact them into our life in order to help make it the best life we possibly can. So many more important things in life than winning, job titles, tons of money, fame, etc. The sooner we connect with the grind, the growth and the people that we want to build our lives around - the better off we will be. What happens when Kentucky roots, a life in radio, and a passion for understanding people come together through the power of voice? In this down-to-earth episode of Better Call Daddy, host Reena Friedman Watts reconnects with Jonathan Mertz host of It's Your Break for a conversation about creativity, reinvention, and what it truly means to use your voice with purpose. From Kentucky roots to radio beginnings, Jonathan shares how his journey has taken him through IT, consulting, voice work, and even working in a jail each chapter shaping how he sees people and the stories they carry. “There's power in speaking and even more power in learning to understand people.” Jonathan opens up about fatherhood, mentorship, weight loss, knee surgery, and the uncomfortable seasons that force growth. He reflects on his late grandmother's influence, the importance of education, and how family continues to ground his creative path. The conversation also explores his wife's experience discovering her biological father later in life, highlighting themes of identity, connection, and healing through truth. Reena and Jonathan dive into the art of voice acting, podcasting, and storytelling discussing how tone, presence, and authenticity shape the way we connect with others. This episode is a reminder that every voice carries weight and every story has the power to change how we understand one another.
Academic, activist and friend of the show Ailbhe Smyth is turning 80 this Friday 29th May. To mark the occasion and to celebrate all her achievements, we invited Smyth back on the Women's Podcast to share her life lessons on reaching this momentous milestone. The almost octogenarian reflects on her early childhood growing up in south Dublin, her struggles with anorexia as a young woman and the life experiences that ultimately led her to become an activist. She talks about the stigma of getting divorced and being an unmarried mother in the 1970s and why she almost left Ireland in the 1980s. We also look back on her extensive work and commitment to the campaigns for marriage equality and repeal. In this wide-ranging discussion, Smyth shares her wisdom and advice on ageing, love, failure and self-acceptance. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
“Send Coach John a message”Found this gem from Kylie Riordan (@mindfulheal) and it's one that I haven't really connected with this thought before. This is the new connection to kindness for me. “Kindness is loaning someone your strength instead of reminding them of their weakness.” I love this thought. Encouraging others, lifting them up; more than pointing out something they might need to fix. I think there is a lot of pointing out the faults of others. What is more strengthening to others, is taking this higher and different “road” in interacting with them. One thing for sure, I need to do more of this for sure. Thanks for listening. Send us Fan Mail In this episode, Spencer Jones talks about the power of breathing and using simple tools like the “5-4-3-2-1” countdown to pause before reacting or making decisions. He explains how this small moment of space can help you calm down, avoid impulsive reactions, and make more mindful choices.
“Send Coach John a message”I found a fantastic reminder from Overmind (@overmind01) where this little gem was shared with everyone: “8 billion people on Earth. Almost none know you exist. The few who do are too busy to care. Relax. No one's watching. Go build your life.” So much to digest out of these few sentences. Reminding ourselves that just about everyone on this planet doesn't know who we are. There are some good people - a few that do know us and are pulling for us, but that number is really small. Realizing that all of these people really don't have any say in what we want to do with our lives. It's up to us. We can't let outside “noise” get in the way of what we do with our lives. “Send Coach John a message” I stumbled across a post from Seek Wiser (@SeekWiser_) today that got me thinking about a few things. This was the quote that caught my eye today: “Positions are temporary. Titles are limited. But how you treat people is always remembered.” Once again, the world needs more of this. I know I keep mentioning this in my podcasts, but it's true. We can all do a better job of sharing and acting on things that help bring about better ways of living our lives. A big part of this also connects with others too. When we live our best lives, remember, we are changing “the world” by improving “our world” around us. All the titles, fancy positions and possessions, along with all the money in the world; none of it will win out over how we make others feel. Between remembering my uncle and the two young fellas I had some great conversations with yesterday - wow… there are tons of awesome examples out there for us to connect with and learn from. Remember, you are one of those examples that others can connect with and learn from too. Thanks for listening. Send us Fan MailIn this episode, Spencer Jones introduces the concept of “open loops,” explaining how unfinished tasks or thoughts can build mental clutter and stress. He compares it to having too many tabs open on a computer and shares how tools like brain dumps and to-do lists can help clear the mind and improve focus.
Some stories grip you because of the storm. Others stay with you because of what comes after.New York Times bestselling author John U. Bacon has written more than a dozen books from leadership lessons drawn from coaching America's worst high school hockey team, to Michigan classics to his latest, The Gales of November, the untold story behind the Edmund Fitzgerald and the brutal, invisible world of Great Lakes shipping. In this episode, John and I cover a lot of ground: what makes a leader worth following, why disaster is almost never one thing, the Colin Powell quote every boss should keep close, and why first drafts are supposed to stink. We talk about Bo Schembechler's secret superpower (it wasn't yelling), the wild west of college football today, and the parenting wisdom of getting out of the way and letting the kids play their own game.We also share a tender moment about my parents who sat in John's University of Michigan classroom in retirement and lived a curiosity-first chapter that still shapes how I move through the world. If you're navigating a curveball, building something new, raising kids, or just trying to figure out what to keep and what to let go… this one's for you.johnubacon.compaigekornblue.com

“Send Coach John a message”I connected with this guy again, as it's been awhile since I've shared something from Coach AJ / Mental Fitness (@coachajkings). This one is a reminder of some pure gold basics in life. It comes from football coach, Dabo Swinney who said, "It's the optimists who change the world." Success starts with your mindset and what you do every single day. A bad attitude holds you back. A great attitude takes you forward. "The only disability in life is a bad attitude." We all have this disability at times throughout our lives, along with others. Keep trying to be your best as I am doing the same. I'm reminding myself that my effort and attitude are the only things that I can really control - I need to keep working on these for sure. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”The Mindfulness Meditation Institute (@TrainingMindful) shared a very powerful and short reminder for all of us. “Be an encourager. The world has plenty of critics already.” - Dave Willis. I may have shared something close to this quote in the past, but I know I needed to share it today for sure. All of us need to look to encourage others AND ourselves. There are so many critics out there, but their feedback to others doesn't even come close to what the world needs. Short and sweet my friends. Thanks for listening. Send us Fan Mail In this part of the podcast, Spencer Jones encourages listeners to define what “living life to the max” truly means for themselves. He shares his own evolving perspective—from initially focusing on passions like outdoor activities and kayak fishing, to later realizing it also includes health, presence with loved ones, financial freedom, and inner peace. He emphasizes that this vision is personal and should be clearly defined, refined over time, and protected from external pressures, so you can live in alignment with who you truly are and what matters most to you.
IIt was Family Day in Canada - a national holiday. It was the first one ever. Seems like a worthwhile title for a holiday.

I accidentally left all four windows down in a rainstorm and it completely soaked my car — and it turned into one of the best mindset lessons I've shared. When unexpected adversity hits your life, the way you respond in those first critical moments determines how much damage actually gets done. In this episode, I break down the three-step process I used to handle the situation and how you can apply it to any storm life throws your way. Key Takeaways You can't always stop the rain, but you can always stop the bleeding — focus on preventing the situation from getting worse before anything else. High stress and panic raise cortisol levels, which actively block your ability to make sound decisions when you need them most. Sitting in a "woe is me" spiral wastes the critical window where action could turn things around. Getting momentum quickly after a setback reduces the sting and starts pulling you back on track, even before the situation is fully resolved. Assessing what went wrong after the dust settles builds experience, and enough experience stacked together becomes wisdom. Action Steps The next time adversity hits, immediately ask yourself: "What can I do right now to keep this from getting worse?" Take that one action before anything else. Shift from asking "why did this happen to me?" to "what is the fix?" as fast as possible — forward momentum is what closes the gap between the problem and the solution. After the crisis is handled, do a honest assessment of what caused it and what you can change or deactivate in your life so it doesn't repeat. Notable Quote Enough of those experiences together, that's called experience. And enough of that experience is called wisdom.
“Send Coach John a message”I found one simple sentence that to me was a very powerful post. It comes from Overmind (@overmind01) and here is the sentence: “Real education starts after you leave school.” Yes sir, 100% right on target for sure. Think of what you are “learning” every day!! “Education” itself simply does not mean in a formal school setting. That's where it starts of course, but real education is something that we are privileged to seek and go after, every single day of our lives! What are your “lesson plans” for today? For your life? Keep striving to get better. To be better. To be a difference maker for others. To be humble and hungry. To understand that nobody gets through this life alone or untouched by challenges, difficulties, setbacks, road blocks, failures, and ultimately, death! “School” is open every day, 24 / 7 / 365. We just have to pay attention to this and to keep learning. The right things are out there for us to pick up and make a part of our “educational” resume. Keep at it!! Thanks for listening. Three short films about New Yorkers: the relationship of an artist and his assistant falls apart; a very young rich girl has adventures; a lawyer's relationship falls apart when his mother disappears during a magic show. It's an uneven collection, as anthology films often are: Scorsese's "Life Lessons" is a savage look at exploitation, Coppola's "Life Without Zoe" is a middling children's film, and Allen's "Oedipus Wrecks" is a pretty standard Woody Allen sketch. Starring Nick Nolte, Rosanna Arquette, Steve Buscemi, Talia Shire, Mia Farrow, Julie Kavner, Mae Questel, and Woody Allen. Written by RIchard Price, Francis Ford Coppola, Sophia Coppola, and Woody Allen. Directed by Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and Woody Allen.
Send us Fan MailIn the closing part of the episode, Spencer Jones reflects on the central theme of storytelling and emphasizes the urgency of taking ownership of your life narrative. He shares a personal moment of inspiration sparked by the question “If not now, when?” and encourages listeners to stop letting external influences define their story. Instead, he challenges them to consciously choose a story of growth, joy, and purpose, stepping fully into control of their own direction while continuing to learn, evolve, and improve along the way.
#247. Social media gets a bad reputation — and usually earns it. But this week, I make the case for the other side: what happens when you curate your feed like a curriculum and actually pay attention. Five ideas worth stealing, from the people worth following. How can we approach aging with more joy, empathy, and meaningful connection? We often talk about lifespan, or how long we live, but Kerry Burnight believes the more important question is how fully we live along the way.Burnight is a gerontologist, former professor of geriatric medicine, and author of Joyspan: The Art and Science of Thriving in Life's Second Half. Drawing from decades of experience working with older adults, she discusses why adopting a “growth aging mindset” can change the way we think about getting older, and why autonomy matters just as much as safety in conversations with aging loved ones. As she puts it, “it's not just the big moments, it's the little moments, too.”In this Quick Thinks episode of Think Fast Talk Smart, Burnight and host Matt Abrahams explore the role of listening, storytelling, and empathy in effective communication across generations. Through memorable examples and actionable advice, Burnight offers a compassionate framework for talking about — and thinking about — aging differently.Episode Reference Links:Dr. Kerry BurnightKerry's Book: JoyspanEp.176 From Stereotypes to Synergy: Communicating Across Generations Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:53) - Aging Mindsets (05:21) - Give of the Day (08:49) - Difficult Aging Conversations (19:21) - Explaining Complex Ideas (20:50) - Conclusion ********Thank you to our sponsors. “Send Coach John a message”There has been a young lady who is in the battle of her life with ALS, that I've been following for a few years. A recent post I saw was her taking questions that she is answering about her journey. Her name is Sarah Nauser (@SarahNauser) and her bio on her Twitter / X account says this: “Dominating ALS one day at a time since 2018. Retired Police Officer. “Love the life you live and live the life you love” Go Royals! #FightLikeAGirl“ She answered a question “are you afraid?” and her answer sure does get me thinking about things in my life and offering me a different perspective as to how I need to change things as far as I handle my troubles. She reminds me in her post about the importance of having “faith over fear”. The lessons she offers from what she's going through, I sure can use them for what I'm going through - simply because my battles are nothing on the scale of seriousness & life altering as she has. She is battling every single day. If she can do that, I know I can do the same. Life is full of inspirational stories and lessons for all of us. Keep seeking them and also don't forget your story, actions, your life - all can help others too. As usual, the world needs these lessons more now than ever!! Thanks for listening. A full life isn't about the quantity of time, but the quality. Our lifespan might describe how long we live, but it doesn't say anything about how well we live. For that, Kerry Burnight says, we need a different measure: joyspan.Burnight is a gerontologist, former professor of geriatric medicine, and author of Joyspan: The Art and Science of Thriving in Life's Second Half. In her decades working with older adults, she noticed a gap: “I would have a lot of people who lived long lives and were in pretty darn good physical health. They were miserable.” That observation led her to dig into the research on well-being — and to find what it takes to enjoy a long life, not just endure one.In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Burnight joins host Matt Abrahams to explore her joyspan framework, explaining how growth, connection, adapting, and giving contribute to a full life. From changing the conversation around aging to communicating more effectively across generations, Burnight offers practical wisdom for living better at any age.Episode Reference Links:Dr. Kerry BurnightKerry's Book: JoyspanEp.176 From Stereotypes to Synergy: Communicating Across Generations Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (03:21) - Defining Joyspan (05:28) - The Joyspan Matrix (11:04) - Learning to Adjust (11:58) - The Power of Stories (15:39) - Internalized Ageism (18:41) - The Final Three Questions (26:00) - Conclusion ********Thank you to our sponsors.
