“Send Coach John a message”I found a combo item here to share with you today. First comes from a difference-maker Clint Hurdle (@ClintHurdle13) where he shared this thought: “Until you find a way to make yourself happy, you'll never have any chance to make others happy.” It's a fine line to recognize the fact that we need to take care of ourselves throughout life and many times it's not easy to do. The other part of the “combo meal” was the recent podcast from John O'Leary - where he and his guest Elizabeth Svoboda discuss “The Art of Pacing” and taking time in our lives to be careful of burning out. Amazing things to think about deeply with the person in our own mirror and to start making plans for finding a few more moments to take care of ourselves a bit more. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I found a post from Damon West (@damonwest7) that reminded me about how to get my day going. He shared this: “Start your day with one question: how am I going to show up today for myself and for others? Because your attitude, your effort, and your presence will shape every room you walk into.” Then spend the day doing your best to be your best for yourself and others. In all that I have to do, mowing the lawn for example, I need to show up and do my best since I can't do the entire lawn at once - I need to focus in and get the front yard done today and do it the best that I can despite the pain I'm in. I need to show up and do my best, even when I run an errand that has to get done. Every little thing that we do, it's better when we show up and do our best. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I came across a fabulous reminder that is connected to a legend who just passed away. Gratitude HQ (@gratefuledu64) shared this quote from Dolly Parton “If you see someone without a smile today, give ‘em yours.” What a fantastic reminder for us to not only help others, but it's also a simple way for us to help ourselves too. It's also something that is so simple to do and yet, it has a wonderful result attached to it too. So many people are carrying worries among other things, that a simple smile can remind them of better things. The legacy of Dolly Parton is something that is being shared all over the world by so many different people since she passed away recently. What a legacy she has left for us to help live better lives. These hashtags were also part of the post: #WednesdayWisdom #ThankYouDolly. Thanks for listening. In this episode, multi-business owner and mom of three Dani Lynnes joins the show to discuss her journey growing a seven-figure childcare center in North Dakota, alongside managing an Airbnb, a farm, a tote rental company, and a family sports schedule. Dani opens up about the pivotal moment that forced her to shift from a hands-on director to a systems-oriented COO, leading to the creation of "the dashboard"—a Trello-based organization system that helps busy moms and entrepreneurs streamline their lives, reduce decision fatigue, and reclaim their freedom. She also shares her raw perspective on navigating the comparison traps of social media, leaning into faith after the sudden loss of her father, and learning to prioritize health, sleep, and alignment over superficial markers of success. About Dani Lynnes Dani Lynnes is a business owner, systems strategist, and creator of The Dashboard—a simple operating system that helps established entrepreneurs organize their priorities, reduce overwhelm, and make confident decisions. As the owner of multiple businesses, including a successful childcare center, real estate ventures, and other entrepreneurial endeavors, Dani understands what it takes to balance growth, leadership, and family without sacrificing what matters most. Known for her practical, no-fluff approach, Dani teaches business owners how to create systems that bring clarity, increase productivity, and free up mental space so they can focus on the work that truly moves the needle. Fresh off the first Cascadia Men's Conference, I'm pleased to share my first long-form podcast episode in some months. Right now, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is storming around the world, a $1.3 billion phenomenon that has returned one of humanity's oldest stories to the center of our cultural conversation. My guest today is a man who has been steeping in this epic for years. Phil Cousineau is the author of newly published ‘The Wisdom of the Odyssey: Twenty-four Life Lessons from Homer's Epic' and more than forty other books, including the bestselling The Art of Pilgrimage and The Hero's Journey: Joseph Campbell on His Life and Work. He is a writer, teacher, and storyteller who has consulted on myth and story for Warner Brothers, Pixar, and Lucasfilm, led mythology travel programs to Greece for more than three decades, and hosted the PBS television series Global Spirit. In our conversation, Phil invites us to look at why The Odyssey has risen once again. He suggests the epic poem is Western culture's first articulated case of PTSD and the consequence of war and conquest. We speak of the women who guide Odysseus back to himself, the terror of crossing your own threshold after twenty years away, and what it means when love rather than fame becomes the gravity that pulls a man home.Phil reminds us that the Odyssey is everybody's story, and the courage required to bend down and kiss the earth in gratitude for the chance to begin again. Here in full is the Rumi poem I reference (translated by Haleh Liza Gafori)LOVE, YOUR waters, your melodieswhirl me and whirl me.I'm the wheel in a mill.Whirl me forever. When my heart is troubled, when my heart has fled, keep me close. No branch, no leaf, no piece of straw drawn to amberwill move without a breeze.Unless desire stirs it, nothing in this world will dance.Every element, every particle of every elementis a whirling lover, drunk on union. The generous host lays out a feast.Animals graze the sweet grass.Didn't the ants tell secrets to Solomon?Didn't the mountains singwhen David sang his songs of praise? The sky is your lover.Lay your head on its peaceful chest. The sun is your lover. Drink its light.Love moves through every mountain and field. How else would green grow from earth's dark body?LINKS * Phil Cousineau - Official Website* The Wisdom of the Odyessy - BookHeads up, if you are a man seeking to explore the mythopoetic path, you are invited to check out The Archetypal Compass. This mini-guide is designed to help you navigate the internal archetypes of the soul, providing a map for those ready to move beyond personal inquiry and toward a more conscious stewardship of their lives and the world. Also, the next cohort of The Deep Masculine, my 3 month online journey for men begins Sept 20th. Join a mythic brotherhood aimed at re-patterning your relationship to sex, soul and purpose.SHOW NOTES00:04 — Quebec and Detroit Roots: Phil traces his ancestry to Jean Baptiste Cousineau, one of the nine founding families of Montreal, and his mythic upbringing in Detroit.00:06 — A Family of Readers: Growing up reading Homer, Grimm, and Canadian folk tales aloud together, and the inherited practice of read, pilgrimage, and the Long Conversation.00:10 — The Odyssey Sketched: A whirlwind through the enchantment at Olympus, the judgment of Paris, Helen, and the 1,156 ships sailing for Troy.00:16 — The First Documented PTSD: Why Odysseus is arguably history's first case of post-traumatic stress, and why a soldier cannot go straight home from war.00:22 — The Bard Scene: On the island of Phaeacia, when Odysseus hears his story sung, takes it back, and the healing begins.00:25 — Why Myths Rise Again: James Baldwin on reading as the antidote to unprecedented pain, and why myths that never happened are always happening.00:33 — The Masculine Arc: From the hunger for kleos (glory) to being pulled home by eros (love), and the grief of men who have achieved everything yet feel lost.00:39 — Polytropos: What it means that Odysseus is "many-turning" — the colossal, radical act of a man capable of changing his mind.00:42 — The Six Women: How Athena, Calypso, Circe, Nausicaa, Eurycleia, and Penelope guide Odysseus home, making the epic the world's first romance.00:46 — Achilles in the Underworld: The axis mundi where glory confronts the choice for one more day of sunshine over eternal fame.00:52 — Gratitude and Kissing the Earth: On Rumi, Coleman Barks, and Odysseus bending down to kiss the beach as literature's first grateful male hero.00:56 — The Beggar's Return: Odysseus comes home not in triumph but humbled, bent, and listening — a diminishment that is actually a deepening.01:06 — Nolan's Ending vs. the Greek Original: Why sailing away into the sunset is American Western mythology, not a Greek ending, and what the film sacrifices.01:10 — Talking Until Dawn: Penelope's fierce "My heart can take it" and the moment husband and wife talk and listen to each other until dawn.01:13 — The Wisdom of the Odyssey: Phil's new book, recommended translations by Lattimore and Emily Wilson, and upcoming mythology tours to Greece. “Send Coach John a message”I found a fabulous post from Clint Hurdle (@ClintHurdle13), which by the way every post he puts out there is to help others. He's the author of one of my favorite books, “Hurdle-isms - Wit and Wisdom from a Lifetime in Baseball.” Check Coach out along with his book too! Two things I found from a recent post of his all dealing with some of his connections to Alcoholics Anonymous. First, he reminds us “by the way, it costs $0 to cheer for others.” What an amazing and powerful reminder for all of us. In a world where things seem to be crazier and crazier each and every day (especially in our country due to one person and his out of touch supporters), we all can do something to cheer on others and lift them up! There was also this quote as part of his post too: “If you think that you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito!” That one for sure hammers home the point about we are never too small to make a difference for others. My friends, keep finding things to remind you about the great things you can accomplish for others and that will lead you to doing the same for yourself too! Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I was reminded (again), of how important it is to simply be open to wanting to get better. The podcast I was listening to that really got me thinking about this topic was from Jon Gordon's podcast, tilted “Rise To Lead” where he interviews his guest Doug Dentler, a CFO with a company who has written a book about this. The mindset it takes to simply want to get better is HUGE! I love the reminders that I heard about even people that have this bigtime title (CFO), need to still find people to help them become better. It's a journey I am on always - and my podcast is something that I hope helps you in your journey to continuing self improvement. Go out there and find things you connect with in order to keep finding ways to get better. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”Finding myself in the mobile studio again for this one, I found this from Mindset Machine (@mindsetmachine) where this idea was shared about Success - “Success happens twice. First in the mind, then in the grind. Picture it, work it, own it.” This helped to remind me that I need to put in a lot more work other than just thinking about the ideas I have. I need to really put more effort into working for them, which will help me own them too. Imagine connecting these two ideas about success. What can you do with our ideas that you have?? And what did we do with our lives once we retired? Did we do what we thought we would? We did want to get involved in our community. This involvement took an expanded turn with the invention of the Internet and Podcasting. Perhaps your's will also. I serve this podcast as a tale of retirement as it may progress.

This week, we're wrapping things up with our final shows of the summer. We had a shorter week because of the RHUGT cast special (check that out if you haven't.) Then, we talked the Love Island USA reunion and I had a weebit of a Headphone Showdown on the flight. Plus, I covered some big life lessons about mortality with my kids (aaaand I almost cried. “Send Coach John a message”I found another gem from Mark Hickie (@MPHickie) and he reminds us about this clip he shared from (@itsjusttrey) - “Remember where you came from. Never lose sight of how far you've come. All the hard days you have made through and how hard you've worked to make it this far. You got so much more to give. Keep going!” The great thing is that we all have this “huge barrel” of things we have been through. Our history is our best mentor! There is energy there for us to get through the next challenge that we have. Keep building up this energy. It will help ourselves and those around us too. Enjoy this clip!! Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”Another fired up post that I found and it reminds me of so many things. It comes from Reads with Ravi (@readswithravi) and the simple message is: “Be someone who still tries.” The details of the post are here: “Be someone who still tries. After failure, frustrations, and heartache - be a person who musters up the courage to try and believe that good things are yet to come.” A big part of this is realizing every single human has failures, frustrations and heartache! It's up to us to choose what we will do with those things. Just like yesterday's message, this one too reminds us to keep going and to keep caring!! I had a great conversation with my good friend Joe D. (former boss) - and one of the things we spoke about was the old saying, “do not grow weary doing good.” Joe gave me a copy of “The 10 Commandments of Leadership” from Dr. Kent M. Keith, and one of them as this: #2 “If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway.” Keep trying my friends! I know I need to keep it up too! Thanks for listening. Episode 4125: Elana Miller took up surfing as an adult and found the ocean taught her things no classroom ever had. On the Contacts Coaching Podcast, Butte College head women's basketball coach Phillip Thomas Jr. shares his journey from Fairfield High (class of 2007) through multiple college stops (Delta/CRC, Florida International, Humboldt State, Whittier) and into coaching via AAU and high school before roles with Team Kidd, Academy of Art, and ultimately becoming Butte's head coach (year three). He explains early head-coaching surprises at the JUCO level—administration, travel, eligibility, housing, and constant roster volatility—and how he now recruits by selling Chico as a college town while pulling talent from states and Canada. Thomas discusses learning from mentors like Chico State's Coach Fogel and Rob Bishop, building a coaching network, and defining culture through accountability, punctuality, study hall, energy, and life lessons. He critiques youth/AAU development gaps, emphasizes fundamentals and “reps,” and describes coaching with authenticity over ego while prioritizing relationships and growth beyond basketball.00:00 Welcome and Introduction00:23 Coach Journey Begins01:29 Switch to Coaching Women02:26 Landing at Butte College03:08 Career Timeline Breakdown04:39 Team Kidd Origins05:25 Head Coach Reality Check07:41 Planning for Chaos09:32 Recruiting to Chico11:17 Mentors at Butte13:20 Building Coaching Network15:52 Defining Program Culture22:17 Life Lessons and Buzzwords23:06 Family Concept in Sports24:24 Accountability With Care25:57 Players Leave And Return26:42 Using Your Own Journey30:08 I Had My Turn32:33 Learning Beyond Basketball37:30 Clubs Versus Schools40:08 Fixing Youth Development44:09 Teaching From Scratch48:50 Coaching Authentically51:02 Power Of Hello52:06 Final Reflections
“Send Coach John a message”I found something from a Master difference maker that we all need to connect with. Jim Rohn Official (@OfficialJimRohn) shared this HUGE post - "Four powerful little words: learn, try, stay and care." — Jim Rohn. He reminds us this: “Simple? Yes. Easy? That's up to you.” I usually don't leave hashtags from a post that I share with you - but these are important enough for you to at least do some searching on your own to make your own connections. (#JimRohn #JimRohnQuotes #Lifestyle #PersonalDevelopment #DesignYourLife #Success #MotivationalQuotes) These 4 little words… They are a great roadmap for life. I'm sure there are many more thoughts that I could have shared with you in this episode about these words - but I think it would mean more to you the listener to make some connections on your own too. In today's crazy world - little things like this can really help us to get through the tough moments. Thanks for listening. We live in a world overflowing with information. Every day we are bombarded with articles, podcasts, videos, opinions, updates, and algorithms that seem to know exactly what we want to hear. Yet for all our access to information, we seem to be increasingly unsure how to live. We know more than ever, but wisdom often feels harder to find. The reason is simple: information is not the same as wisdom. Wisdom is understanding how God designed the world and learning to live within that design. It is seeing life through God's perspective and allowing His truth to shape our decisions, relationships, and character. “Send Coach John a message”I found a very powerful reflective post from Kylie Riordan (@mindfulheal) and it was this reminder for all of us: “Always remember that you can have the worst days of your life and a few weeks later you can have the best day of your life. Don't give up. Keep going.” I've been inspired lately, mainly by my parents - especially my dad!! There are others too that I have connections to or simply see in person, that remind me to not give up and to keep going. A key for all of us to remember is that we are that same person for others. That's why we always need to keep looking to improve every day we have. Keep encouraging that person staring back at you in the mirror too!! Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”This short gem came from Jon Gordon (@JonGordon11) where he shared this #MindsetMonday message. “The mind is like a Garden. You need to weed the negative and feed the positive.” Wow.. simple, yet total 100% truth! There are plenty of things that we can let build up in our minds and hearts that are weeds. Things that will discourage us, doubt ourselves, be negative, etc. What we need to do is “fertilize” our minds and hearts with the stuff that is full of joy, encouragement, builds our peace, connects with our burn and our life-purpose along with helping us to connect to the people we love and care for. Even if you are like me and not much of a gardener, taking care of this kind of weeding and fertilizing helps us wherever we go. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I found a great “formula” for all of us to use in our lives. It comes from Reads with Ravi (@readswithravi) and it's The (Complete) Formula for Getting Lucky!! It is Preparation (personal growth) + Attitude (belief / mindset) + Opportunity (a good thing coming your way) + Action (doing something about it) = LUCK! So many of these things we can work on creating every single day and then we will see different results for sure compared to if we didn't have this formula. Keep investing in each of these pieces of this formula my friends. I need to keep this up for sure!! Thanks for listening. Nico & TK are here to talk about the end of an era and how it shapes out the rest of the line! From the energy around the final issues of the run to the stories themselves, the two dissect the way Casey changes everything. From here, the duo discuss Casey's X-Men special, Life Lesson, a Starbright Foundation special for burn victims, and how it represents the best of self-insert magical storytelling. Then, look at Nightcrawler's second miniseries (vs human traffickers) and a return to Generation X with two X-Men Unlimited stories – featuring Jubilee/Angelo & Emma Frost/Adrienne Frost – before diving into Chamber's first miniseries! Read along with Uncanny X-Men #407 - 409 & Life Lessons, Nightcrawler (vol 2) #1 - 4, X-Men Unlimited #34, & Chamber #1 - 4 – it's all this and more on an all-new X Is For Comics!
The pause is the thing. The pause gives our mind time to work. It gives us time to think. It calls forth our imagination. We need time to sort through possibilities, thoughts, and values. We need time to find out what we are thinking.

“Send Coach John a message”Super short, but very powerful reminder here from Psyche Wizard (@PsycheWizard) where they shared this: Marcus Aurelius said it right - “Discipline is the art of not betraying yourself.” Again, it shows how throughout the history of humans being around, there have been lessons out there for such a long period of time. Yet - we all need to keep learning these things and implementing them into our lives! Remember, have the talk with the person in the mirror about things like this. Thanks for listening. What if the key to building a successful life isn’t having everything figured out—but simply doing the job that’s right in front of you? On this episode of The Karol Markowicz Show, Karol sits down with Matthew Hennessey, editor of Free Expression at The Wall Street Journal, for a wide-ranging conversation about career, marriage, ambition, failure, and finding your path in life. Hennessey shares his unconventional journey from chasing an acting career in Hollywood to becoming a journalist and eventually landing at The Wall Street Journal. He explains why meeting his wife became a pivotal moment in both his personal life and career, and why young people may have it backwards when they believe they need to establish themselves professionally before getting married. Karol and Matthew also discuss the value of taking risks, learning to do difficult things, supporting children as they pursue uncertain dreams, and why success often comes one small step at a time. Hennessey also explains what The Wall Street Journal represents beyond finance and Wall Street, shares his concerns about the possibility of a major economic downturn, and offers a surprisingly optimistic perspective on artificial intelligence and the economy. Finally, he leaves listeners with a simple piece of advice that has guided his career and life: Do the job that’s in front of you, and the future will take care of itself.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Send Coach John a message”I found this powerful reminder from Nancy Lieberman (@NancyLieberman) all connected to why we do the right thing. “If you do good expecting a reward, that is when it stops being a virtue. Real growth is not a transaction. You do not do good to collect something. You do it because you are already something.” BOOM!! What a powerful reminder about how we go about our lives, every day! Doing the right thing is the way to go because it's the right thing. We should live our lives more and more with this. Again, think of how the world would be a much better place. #241 - Your life can change in less than two months, and then you're left staring at the silence. Derrik Dyka knows that shock firsthand. After his wife of 24 years is diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer, everything moves fast and then stops. Derikk describes freezing, losing his footing, and realizing that without a normal routine to return to, grief can turn into a kind of paralysis. Then his twin sons give him an unexpected assignment: “Go be James Bond.” That challenge kicks off a solo travel reset across Asia, starting with Tokyo, where the crowds somehow feel isolating, and then shifting to the Philippines, where simple warmth from strangers and daily open water swimming bring him back to himself. We talk about why connection matters more than the destination, why traveling alone changes how you relate to the world, and how small risks can open big doors.Derikk also shares the deeper thread he only recognized while writing his memoir, Good Grief Travel: the real journey is curiosity, community, and resilience. From a spontaneous friendship with a swim guide to a surreal night at a rural China birthday party where no one shares a language but everyone shares laughter, his stories make a strong case that healing can be built from tiny human moments. We close with practical ways to participate in life again, from walking daily and calling your people to learning your neighbors' names and setting the table to see who shows up.If this conversation helps, subscribe to the show, share it with someone who needs it, and leave a rating or review so more people can find these stories. To learn more about Derrik and get a copy of his memoir check out goodgrieftravel.com. “Send Coach John a message”I found a much needed reminder from Mindset Machine (@mindsetmachine) where this was shared: “People are addicted to easy and easy is the reason their life stays hard.” In today's world with so many distractions and things that we can choose from on how to spend our time - it is not difficult to choose easy things. I've done it for sure. But you know what? As I reflect and connect to this concept, I look back at all the times where I took my foot off the accelerator and just did things that were fun (watch t.v., spend time playing games, time on my phone and computer looking up nonsense, etc.), then I felt down about myself. I felt drained actually. I felt tired and worn out. Then I had no focus and energy to do things that really mattered and were important. There is the thought, if we always choose what's easy and fun all the time, later the price to be paid is a lot worse. Our life will not be fun and it will be more difficult than it really had to be. This does not mean to never have fun. It's a necessary part of life for sure. But not all the time. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I found an amazing post to start my day with today and it came from Mark Hickie (@MPHickie) where he shared this thought: “A message for today … Be kind. Be understanding. Listen. Love openly. Give without expecting anything in return. And when you mess up, make it right. Always be the best person you can be.” There is more to his post that I shared in today's episode and here are my thoughts as I reposted Mark's post from today: “What a unique way to go out and face the day… a powerful way too… taking control back and choosing how to be in a very “loud, angry and distraction-filled world!” Thanks for the reminder @MPHickie” In seeing and feeling what is going on in our world today, this different viewpoint on how we can choose how to go about our day - just a bit different than what the “normal” seems to be. EVEN MORE about this episode! She died... then came back with a message that changed her life forever. What really happens during a near-death experience? In this powerful episode of the Ask Julie Ryan Show, I sit down with UK-based past life regression therapist, shamanic healer, and author Jane Osborne, whose life changed forever after a devastating base-jumping accident left her with a crushed spine, two broken vertebrae in her neck, and doctors convinced she would never walk again.During her near-death experience, Jane found herself outside her body and received a clear, life-changing message: return and help others heal through the power of the mind. Against every medical prediction, she not only learned to walk again but dedicated her life to uncovering the hidden connections between trauma, consciousness, and healing.Together, we explore what Jane experienced on the other side, how past-life regression can uncover the emotional roots of chronic illness and unexplained fears, and why some physical symptoms may originate far beyond this lifetime. We also discuss inherited trauma, soul contracts, starseeds, and why so many people feel they've never truly belonged on Earth.Whether you're fascinated by near-death experiences, searching for answers about life after death, or looking for hope on your own healing journey, this conversation offers remarkable insights into the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit—and the possibility that our greatest challenges are guiding us toward our true purpose.Guest Biography:Jane Osborne is a leading UK past life regression therapist, hypnotherapist, author, and spiritual teacher who helps people uncover the hidden roots of emotional, physical, and spiritual challenges through introspective hypnosis and soul-based healing. We graduate many times in life. We step up. We step away. We step into. We move. That's the thing isn't it. We move on. Hopefully we move on to something greater that that which we have just experienced. Retirement is one of the last major change.
