In this solo episode of the Dad Edge Podcast, I dive into the valuable life lessons we as fathers can teach our kids through sports—lessons that go far beyond winning or losing. Whether it's about praising effort over outcomes, sharing personal stories of hard work, or simply playing together with no agenda, I explore how to build stronger bonds and greater resilience in our kids through these moments. This episode is a call to reframe how we show up on the sidelines and in life. Sports can be more than competition—they can be a platform for presence, growth, and connection. If you want to raise grounded, hardworking kids who aren't afraid of putting in the reps, this episode is for you. TIMELINE SUMMARY [0:00] - Kicking off the episode with intention and a mission for fatherhood [1:02] - The busy fall season: sports, school, and parenting chaos [2:22] - Why we must praise effort—not just outcomes—with our kids [3:46] - Childhood memories and the impact of working hard without reward [5:02] - Growth mindset: effort over results builds long-term confidence [6:29] - Combating entitlement by teaching consistent hard work [7:27] - Celebrating preparation, not just game-day performance [8:07] - Sharing real stories of hard work from our own lives with our kids [9:18] - Why credibility with your kids is built through relatable stories [9:38] - The power of play: connecting with our kids through shared activity [10:21] - Taekwondo with my son and football with another—just having fun [11:12] - Why the end result matters less than the connection [11:49] - A practical call to action: ask your kids what they learned from sports this week [12:26] - Don't let your kids off the hook—push for real answers [13:04] - Reflecting on the last quarter of the year and what's ahead [13:39] - A warning for business owners: don't build an empire and lose your family [14:19] - Links to join The Alliance or Business Boardroom [14:42] - Final recap and reminder to praise effort, share stories, and play together 5 KEY TAKEAWAYS 1. Praise Effort, Not Just Results When we focus on our kids' preparation, persistence, and grit rather than wins or trophies, we help them develop a growth mindset that builds confidence and resilience. 2. Real-Life Stories Create Connection Sharing your own stories of hard work, sacrifice, and struggle makes your guidance more credible and relatable—and shows your kids you've been in their shoes. 3. Play Without a Purpose Connection often happens in the unstructured moments. Whether it's football or taekwondo, playing with your kids for the sake of fun builds trust and memories. 4. Ask Better Questions Instead of asking “How was practice?”, ask “What did you learn this week from sports?” Push them to reflect and communicate their growth and insights. 5. Lead Without Losing What Matters Whether you're a career man or building a business, don't trade connection with your wife or kids for productivity. Build both—intentionally. Found a post from a relatively new source and I'll make sure you understand what this is about and what it's not. The source was Philosophy of Ages (@PhilosophyAges) and what they shared was this: “A millionaire once said: People don't have the patience to dedicate 3 years to building their own business, but they do have the patience to work for others for 40 years.”  Now one thing for sure, it's not about making a ton of money. It's all about having the patience to dedicate to yourself. To keep investing in yourself. To become the best you can become. It's something to keep working on all the time. Plus, another thing… you want to spend 40 years doing something for a career, make sure you love getting up for it every day!! Find whatever lights that spark inside of you. I found a great post that ties into something else that I saw this morning and it all centers around the importance of always learning. Reads with Ravi (@readswithravi) shared this thought:  “Those who keep learning will keep rising in life.” ~ Charlie Munger. This was also connected to another post that I saw this morning with a quote (even though I butchered the thought) from Brian Tolentine, M.Ed. - “Students need to read books. Entire books. Our society is distracted, unfocused, and in a hurry. A curriculum that rushes through content perpetuates the anxiety of our time. Reading a book (slowly and leisurely) is a countercultural act.” We are all students in life and life is always a teacher. Keep investing in yourself. When we are at our best, those around us benefit too. The world needs us to be our best!  Thanks for listening.  Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on Apple Podcasts and ITunes or other services where you find this show.  Find me on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/coachtoexpectsuccess/   on Twitter / “X”:  @coachtosuccess   and on Instagram at:  @coachjohndaly  - My YouTube Channel is at: Coach John Daly.   Email me at: CoachJohnDalyPodcast@gmail.com     You can also head on over to https://www.coachtoexpectsuccess.com/ and get in touch with me there on my homepage along with checking out my Top Book list too.  Other things there on my site are being worked on too.  Please let me know that you are reaching out to me from my podcast.

Have you ever caught yourself sounding just like your parents? Today we reflect on the lessons—both spoken and unspoken—that our parents, coaches, and role models left with us, and how they've shaped the women and moms we are today. From confidence and community to money and independence, these life lessons are now the ones we're passing down to our own kids. Amy shares how her mom's approach to appearance built her confidence from the inside out, while Abby opens up about her mom's influence around food, body image, and community involvement. Amy also remembers her dad's encouragement to always be financially independent, and Abby gets vulnerable about what money represented in her childhood—a story she's never shared before. We also chat briefly about the latest reality TV drama (yes, the new Bachelorette!) before diving back into what it really means to carry these lessons forward. Whether the wisdom came from parents, coaches, or mentors, it's worth reflecting on the positive examples you had growing up and how you're creating that same legacy for your own children today.Tune in and reflect with us—you'll be reminded that the work you're doing as a mom matters, in ways your children will carry for life.LINKS AND RESOURCES:CORNBREAD HEMP: 30% off with code HERSELF cornbreadhemp.com/herselfGOODR: Free Shipping with code HERSELF: https://goodr.com/herselfPATREON: Join our exclusive community where we drop a bonus episode every single week: https://www.patreon.com/herselfpodcastLet's connect!HERSELF INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/herselfpodcastMEET AMY: http://instagram.com/ameskieferMEET ABBY: http://instagram.com/abbyrosegreenThis episode was brought to you by the Pivot Ball Change Network.

We all grew up on princess fairy tales — Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty — and without realizing it, those stories shaped how we thought life and love should look. Be beautiful. Be sweet. Endure hardship. And eventually, a handsome prince will show up out of nowhere, fall instantly in love, and “save” you. But what if… those same stories could actually teach us powerful gospel truths? In this episode, I'm joined by Valerie Beus, host of Family Movie Night for Latter-Day Saints, who helps families find gospel lessons in their favorite films. Together, we're reimagining these princesses — not as helpless damsels waiting for a prince — but as women of strength, faith, and purpose. We talk about:

Leaning on this guy a lot lately and his message today is one that all of us can make a personal connection with.  It comes from Mark Hickie (@MPHickie) and he shares these thoughts about the quote he connects this with. Mark's thoughts are: “A message for today … Success isn't always instant or visible. It's built in the quiet hours, when no one is watching. Every bit of effort, every act of dedication adds up. Even when recognition seems distant, keep showing up—your breakthrough is closer than you think.”  There are so many things that we are doing in life that don't get noticed by others. Remember, that's not what we are looking for. What we are looking for, I think, is that WE notice the little things we are doing AND we understand that we just need to keep working on them, keep doing them, keep learning new things to help us to keep going. Also remember that when we keep at the things, the habits, we keep getting better. To me, that is success. You being at your best means you are able to make a difference for others. When we are not working to be our best - we are not able to help others that much.  Keep working on ourselves my friends. Keep bringing the effort, the thought, the energy, etc., each and every day. That is success for sure.

Sharing some great thoughts with you today from the legend, Jon Gordon (@JonGordon11) where he reminds us in his “Mindset Monday” post, that “It's better to give than receive.  Yet some people are reluctant to give because they don't feel like they have enough. That's a scarcity mindset. When you give, you find abundance. The more you give, the more you receive to give away. Be a giver! Live generous today!”  The more we keep working on ourselves to be our best, we will have plenty to give away. Remember, it's not just money. It's our time, our listening, our laughter, our smiles, our help, etc. Things like this get me so fired up because I've seen it happen for me - especially lately. I'm glad I'm finally learning how important this is. I've had glimpses of it before throughout my younger years, but not the clear understanding on how awesome this is. Keep at it my friends. The world needs you at your best!!

I had a start to my day where I was trying to connect with something better than what was swirling around in my head. I let the “doom and gloom” stuff going around in the world today, get to me. But like before, I knew it was happening and I set out to choose to do something about it.  A gratitude walk sure did help this morning along with a couple of other things. First came from Coach Ray Ostrowski (@CoachRayO3313) - a former student and now an outstanding teacher and coach himself. He shares this: “New Day - New Opportunity - Today is a new day. It does not care about what happened last week. It does not care what you plan to do next week. Today is a new day & a great opportunity to get better. Always be thankful and grateful for a new day. Make the best of your opportunity.” Perfect for me today! Next up was a post from Power of Positivity (@LIVEpositivity) “Stay hopeful. You never know what tomorrow may bring.” Again, a message to help me readjust my day, which we all need once in a while.  Another couple of items  came from a teaching post that I got some very uplifting feedback from three former students and a couple of former colleagues, that once again, helped me readjust my day!! It's also probably time for a readjustment of my social media intake as well. So many more things to help me with where I want my days (and ultimately my life) to go in a more positive direction. Chris Burkard is no stranger to grand adventures. He's built his career chasing light at the edges of the world, photographing athletes in their element, from the ocean to glaciers, sides of mountains, and continues to test himself on countless expeditions — including a sixteen-day finish at the Tour Divide. But the Silk Road Mountain Race remained an elusive someday ride, shadowed by imposter syndrome, questioning if he really belonged on the startline. This year he took the leap, training with new focus and deep respect for the mountains.Chock full of life lessons, Chris reflects on his time in Kyrgyzstan, the lessons he carried from his time on the Tour Divide, and how he's learned that fear and readiness can coexist. He shares stories of crushing loneliness — the realization of how far from home and familiarity he really was — and moments of elation, from the tears of relief when the headwind finally broke to the overwhelming joy of reaching the summit of the final pass. Most of all, he reflects on the power of vulnerability, the importance of taking joy seriously, and the truth that so much of what these experiences give us, more often than not, has nothing to do with the bike.Follow Chris on Instagram: @chrisburkard Follow Mel on Instagram: @melwwebbFollow Detours on Instagram: @detourscyclingFollow Albion on Instagram: @albion.cyclingUse code DETOURS15 to get 15% off your next order from AlbionIf you love this show please consider pledging your support to sustain producing this show: https://buymeacoffee.com/detourspodcast

Found a powerful post from Mind Essentials (@Mind_Essentials) where the quote was shared on the side of a building.  (like it's that important for us to see it)  The quote? It's right here:  “Life's already hard, I don't wanna be around anyone who makes it worse.” )The quote comes from @bestmemory.)  This point has already been on my radar for as long as I can remember. I've always said that life and other people will make life hard - why would I make it any harder for myself. Now that doesn't mean that I have it all figured out and I haven't always listened to this quote. I struggle too.  I just hope and plan to not keep struggling with this.  I will still work on not letting myself help the world and others that cause troubles!! Then I will also be working on not causing myself problems too.

It's been awhile since I have shared something from John Maxwell's “Daily Reader.”  This is from September 16 and it deals with Significance over Security.  It gets us thinking about settling for security (and in today's world, that sounds great with all of the crazy things going on), but it also gets us thinking about how significant we are in our lives.  It's a mind shift to our purpose and our life's mission. Doesn't matter our age or where we are in our lives, we can always make the shift he shares in this. This has been on my heart, on my mind and in my actions for a long time. I just need to turn up the heat of me going after this now in my life. In this conversation, author and acupuncturist Connie Warden joins Cristina and Alex to talk about her book Speeding to Compassion—a project born from her surprising realization that her mindfulness practice didn't extend to the driver's seat. Connie shares candid stories of road rage, self-reflection, and the universal struggle of anger, showing how the car became her training ground for compassion. What starts as a book about driving quickly unfolds into a much bigger exploration of authenticity, inner critics, and how to process emotions without repressing them.Together, they dive into the ways we invent stories about strangers on the road, the “fundamental attribution error” that makes us judge others more harshly than ourselves, and the small practices—like singing a song or reframing the moment—that can transform frustration into growth. This episode is equal parts humor and humanity, reminding us that compassion isn't about being perfect. It's about noticing our triggers, giving ourselves grace, and practicing empathy in everyday life—whether behind the wheel, with our kids, or in leadership.

Saw a post that was funny, sad, but (to me) very true! It was from “Echoes of the Past” and the quote was an image of an older cowboy sitting on a horse with a slight smile and he is saying: “I guess they had to invent artificial intelligence since real intelligence is running out.”  My first thing I did was have a little smile and chuckle, but then quickly went  to a kind of sad feeling. But, I do feel the part of “real intelligence” disappearing quite fast. My thought is to invest in yourself in “human skills”. Those skills that (I think) technology cannot replace. For sure, learn about AI and other intelligence things, but don't let them replace your human skills. That's the key!

I found a couple of posts that gave me this idea to put these two powerful things together.  First from Dear Self (@Dearme2_) where it was shared that “Consistency looks like nothing is happening, until everything changes. Awesome piece to hold onto and to keep being consistent every day we can. The second piece came from Psyche Wizard (@PsycheWizard), who I have connected with many times before and today's message was this:  “Discipline will carry you to places motivation can't.” These two connections to our success are there for us to connect to and make a part of our own success formula!  Make them your own!! Keep at it! Don't give up! Don't give into the crud happening in the world today!!  Oh… sorry… those things were directed at me. I found a great connection with some understanding and uplifting items that I needed today, and it all came from Mark Hickie (@MPHickie) where he shared his introduction to post today: “A message for today … Life isn't always fair — but that doesn't mean you have to give up. Refuse to be ruled by negativity. Stay strong, stay positive & keep moving forward. You are capable of achieving far more than you believe.” This got my attention right away as I saw that I was letting life beat me up a bit lately. The post that went with his intro, solidified why I needed this today. Check this episode out a few times as the more I spoke, the more things I started connected to it and people that provided some of those great connections!!  I found some awesome reflections here with this one and I hope it helps you reflect and make some deep-rooted connections to what you need to do in your life. A big thank you for listening to this one. Hello friends, it's Kelly. You may have noticed I've been away from the show for over a month—the longest break I've taken in more than seven years of podcasting. The reason is deeply personal: my father passed away in August at the age of 95. I've spent these weeks with him, with family, remembering him, celebrating his life, and navigating the bittersweet gift of grief. In this episode, I want to honor my dad, who first taught me how to swim. Through his simple “swim to Daddy” lessons on Lake Barcroft, he gave me some of the most profound truths I've carried into every stage of my life as a swimmer, coach and person.I'll share five swim and life lessons my late father passed on to me—about courage, trust, health, joy, and resilience. My hope is that these lessons touch your life the way they've touched mine, whether you're a swimmer or not.I'm happy to be back at the mic and look forward to connecting again with you soon! Email us at HELLO@ChampionsMojo.com.
