I can hardly believe we're celebrating our 700th episode! Hitting this incredible milestone over nearly nine years of podcasting has really made me reflect on the seven powerful life lessons I've learned along the way. These aren't just for podcasters; they're universal truths that can help you in your own life too. It's been a hard but vital lesson to accept that not everybody has to love you for you to do good work, and that small wins truly do build over time, forming the consistent process that leads to genuine progress. These lessons have shaped me and the podcast, and I hope they resonate with you as much as they have with me. I found a couple of posts that really focused on some points that I think we need to have more examples of in our world. The first one was from Motivational Quotes (@motivational) where we are reminded about some things that really “Speaks loudest” when it comes to helping to make a difference with others. This post goes on to share these things that do have a “loud voice”: “It's not your wallet, your title or your status. It's how you treat others that speak the loudest.” The second connection came from Coach AJ Mental Fitness (@coachajkings) where he shares this classic reminder from one of the greats of any sport and all of history - “John Wooden said, “Helping others is perhaps the greatest joy! You cannot have a perfect day without helping others with no thought of getting something in return.” Acts of service enrich our lives. It means selflessness, kindness, and serving. Serving is a reward by itself.” Awesome thoughts for all of us to be better for ourselves and for others too! Thanks for listening. This one stood out to me because I know I have fears and I know they are getting in the way of me living my life to the fullest. It comes from Reads with Ravi (@readswithravi) and it's a short but powerful reminder: “The fears we don't face become our limits.” - Robin Sharma. I have had things getting in my way for 20 + years and to top that off, not only do I know about them - a few of my best friends know it too. You see, they have been around me that long, always encouraging me that I can do these things, but the final decision needs to come from me. Another key element. Since it's been 20 or so years, I look ahead to another 20 years. Yikes!! I'll be just around the corner (if I'm blessed enough to see this corner) from turning 80 years old!!!! Time waits for nobody!! I don't have all the time in the world where we think we do sometimes. I will continue to try and “talk to myself, rather than listen to myself” in going after whatever I have to do to get through these fears. When I step back a bit, they really are not that big of a deal for sure. Thanks for listening. Again, it happened again. A message that not only I needed to see, but that I have been reminded about it from different places. This time it came from Power of Positivity (@LIVEpositivity) where this message was shared: “You will never hear another person's voice more than you hear your own. Be intentional about the way that you talk to yourself.” It's an old saying that I have heard for a long time, but since I needed it as recently as this morning, I needed to share it with you. It's connected with - “talk to yourself rather than listen to yourself.” Most of the time when I'm feeling down about things in life, I start listening to the critic inside of me, instead of the coach and cheerleader! I know I need to continue to tap into that coach & cheerleader, without me having to wait for this quote coming back into my life. It's something I know I need to do, want to do, and will do!! Send us a textToday we're revisiting a powerful conversation that I had with Daniel Carcillo—two-time Stanley Cup champion, NHL veteran, and one of hockey's most compelling voices on mental health and resilience. This episode remains profoundly relevant as Daniel's journey from the heights of professional hockey to the depths of addiction and back to purposeful healing continues to resonate with anyone facing their own battles. His raw honesty about concussion-related trauma, opioid addiction, and the transformative power of vulnerability offers timeless insights that feel even more urgent in today's mental health landscape. What makes this conversation especially meaningful is Daniel's evolution from enforcer to healer—showing us that our greatest struggles can become our most powerful tools for helping others. His work with emerging brain health therapies and his commitment to authentic living provide hope and practical wisdom that transcends sports. If you missed this episode the first time, or if life has brought new challenges since you last heard it, Daniel's story of redemption and purpose will meet you exactly where you are. This is more than a hockey story—it's a roadmap for turning pain into purpose and finding strength in our most vulnerable moments. As well, if you are interested in receiving a free mental health journal sponsored by the Resilience Agenda based in Switzerland and Australia, please share this episode on social media and tag me. Saw another great post that had a very simple, yet powerful reminder for all of us and it came from POSITIVITY (@PositivitySaid) “Just enjoy life. You will never be this young again.” I sat back to let this sink in a bit and it reminds me to try and do the most with every day that I have. The things that I want to do, need to do, get to do, etc., and as I get older, some of those things (and many others), will only get more difficult with age and time adding up. It's true for all of us - make sure we remind ourselves of this point every day! Thanks for listening. Found a post about some really good advice that I have heard shared from others too. This one came from The Mindfulness Meditation Institute (@TrainingMindful) where they shared: “The best weight you will ever lose is the weight of other people's opinions of you.” I have always remembered the line that reminds us that opinions are like people's backsides, everyone has one. The world seems to be never short of others' opinions and it can be tough to not only filter through them, but to also not let them get to us. Having confidence in ourselves in things we want to do helps to focus on what we can control and not worry so much about the opinion of others. Our lives and our troubles can lighten up a bit when we get rid of those opinions from others. Thanks for listening. The All Blacks' success is attributed to leaders who empower their teammates, focus on collective goals, and foster a culture of accountability.Teambuilding and Culture: The book delves into how the All Blacks build a cohesive team culture centered around values, such as respect, humility, and excellence. Every member of the team is expected to contribute to this culture.Legacy: The notion of legacy plays a crucial role in the All Blacks' philosophy. Players are encouraged to think about the impact they leave not just in their playing careers but also on future generations. The concept of 'leaving the jersey in a better place' exemplifies this mindset.Attention to Detail: The All Blacks focus extensively on preparation and the small details that can make a significant difference in performance. Kerr highlights how this attention to detail translates into executing their game plan successfully.Resilience and Adaptability: The book discusses how the All Blacks have developed resilience in the face of challenges and setbacks, emphasizing the importance of learning from failure and adapting strategies.Continuous Improvement: Continuous learning and improvement are vital for the All Blacks. Kerr shares insights into their rituals, practices, and the "Kaizen" philosophy, which encourages incremental improvement.Influence of Maori Culture: The book also reflects on how Maori culture and its values significantly influence the team. Concepts like "Whanau" (family) foster strong bonds among team members, enhancing teamwork and collaboration. Conclusion:In summary, "Legacy" offers rich insights into how the principles that guide the All Blacks can be successfully applied to various areas beyond rugby. Dr. Najwa Zebian is an activist, educator, speaker, author and relationship expert. Dr. Zebian began to write in an effort to connect with and heal her first students, a group of young refugees, but found that she was also writing to heal herself. In her first book, Welcome Home, she presented a guide for people to become a safe space for themselves, to see themselves through their own eyes, and to leave self-abandoning patterns behind. Today on the show we discuss: why people stay in unfulfilled lives, 3 things you can do to make the most out of life changes, how to know if you are the common denominator of your problems, how to leave relationships without guilt, strategic ways to deal with uncertainty, how to leave environments that you have outgrown and much more. ⚠ WELLNESS DISCLAIMER ⚠ Please be advised; the topics related to health and mental health in my content are for informational, discussion, and entertainment purposes only. Found a great post from Reads with Ravi (@readswithravi) “A reminder: Bigger dreams call for healthier habits and healthier habits require more self discipline.” This is something for sure I needed to see, read, hear, think, do, etc., more of in my life. I love the simple fact that we can work on our dreams, work on our habits along with working on our self-discipline. This is, of course, easier said than done. But at least, we can for sure control these three. We are for sure better off taking care of these ourselves, instead of letting others or the world make those decisions for you. (00:00:00) Introduction to Ronda's Story (00:02:10) Understanding Pick's Disease Symptoms (00:05:04) Mother's Previous Health Battles (00:07:30) Living With Someone With Dementia (00:11:41) Anticipatory Grief and Life Lessons (00:15:25) Ocean Dream Fulfilled (00:19:12) Final Reflections and Closing Watching someone you love transform before your eyes while they're still breathing creates a unique form of grief that few discuss openly. In this deeply moving conversation, Ronda Adamo shares her family's journey through her mother's battle with Pick's disease, a rare form of frontal temporal dementia that claimed her just ten months after diagnosis. Before receiving that life-changing medical news, Ronda and her sisters faced a painful confusion as their mother's personality shifted dramatically. The godly woman they'd always known began exhibiting uncharacteristic behaviors - falling frequently, speaking in uninhibited ways, and seeming cognitively distant. Having watched their mother previously battle multiple forms of cancer, the family mistakenly attributed these changes to potential medication abuse, a misunderstanding that still weighs heavy on Ronda's heart years later."Not everything is as it seems," Ronda reflects. The diagnosis revealed their mother's brain was being altered by an accumulation of tau protein, transforming the woman they knew while her heart still beat. The family pivoted quickly from disappointment to determined support, learning what it means to grieve someone who hasn't yet died. Despite the rapid progression of the disease, they created a precious memory by fulfilling their mother's lifelong dream - walking in the ocean wearing a flowing white dress, even though winter's chill meant abandoning their original spring timeline.Ronda's story offers profound wisdom for anyone supporting a loved one through dementia: allow yourself to grieve throughout the journey, practice patience and forgiveness, and consciously choose to let positive memories burn brighter in your mind than the difficult moments. Her vulnerability reminds us that in our most painful human experiences, we can still find moments of beauty that sustain us through grief and beyond.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bereaved-but-still-me--2108929/support.

Timing seems to be everything when you need a reminder that things are going to be ok, even when I get down on myself and I wonder if I will get through the troubles I'm dealing with. Well then a couple of things - first I saw this post from Positively Present (@positivepresent) “Some of the best moments are coming… The film of your life is still playing. Some of the best moments of your life are still to come.” A wonderful reminder for me that “my movie” is still being played out and better things are coming. The second thing - it always seems to happen where I get a text, a call, an email or a message on social media from someone reaching out and lifting my spirits. I did the same to a colleague last week and then in a conversation with that colleague this past weekend, I found out the perfect timing of my message was when him and his family were dealing with something that recently had happened. Then the morning of this recording, a former student of mine reached out thanking me for our time together in my classes before she graduated 7 years ago. That was a big uplift for me on this challenging day. Read the quote again from above - better days are coming for you too! Thanks for listening.
